Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory

In April 2022, Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory topped Good Housekeeping’s list of 25 Best Factory Tours in America for Families Who Love to Go Behind the Scenes. K-Beauty

is an umbrella term for Korean skincare products. Thanks to Korean beauty philosophy, these products are created with health and hydration in mind and improve the health of your skin over time. Though these products generally aren’t made to be quick fixes for any skin blemishes you may have, you’ll notice the gradually improved state of your complexion. The emphasis of Korean skincare is to follow an individualized, consistent routine with products that use natural, unique, gentle ingredients. Many of these concepts have been passed down through multiple generations. Korean beauty philosophy recognizes that everyone’s skin is unique and has its own special needs, which is why understanding your skin is fundamental to your K-beauty routine. In Korea, people often spend a large amount of time exposed to the sun and other elements. Searching for ways to prevent and correct environmental and sun damage, Koreans found that natural ingredients such as rice water, mung bean, and camellia offered more balanced skin. Though discovered thousands of years ago, these ingredients are still used in modern K-beauty products because they are rich in antioxidants and provide hydrating properties. Korea’s economy grew exponentially around the 1940s, and what we know as the modern K-beauty movement began. Many original Kbeauty companies are around even today, such as Saengreen, Amore Pacific, and Shangpree. As the reach of these brands and products continued to progress, so did the incorporation of more ingredients and formulas. Now, a typical K-beauty skincare routine consists of products like essences, serums, ampoules, masks, and more, that all work together to promote healthy skin, layer by layer. Remember, the emphasis of Korean skincare is customization, so while one person’s routine could be 15 steps, your’s might be only five steps. Pay attention to the products and ingredients that work for your skin and adjust your routine over time based on what your skin is craving. Many K-beauty products are designed to be buildable, so just go off your intuition when caring for your own precious skin. Need some more hydration after a particularly hot, windy day? As a leather craftsman himself, our current owner David is able to expertly direct the artisans that work in the shop because he also knows the trade from lifelong influences such as his grandfather Isaac, and father Sam. But it doesn't end there. Nicole Freedman, who serves as the company's Vice President and manages the U.S. operations in Midway, also has roots grounded in the horse industry. As a breeder and exhibitor, her experience in the sport is invaluable to serving that same industry. In fact, many of the team members of Freedman's have spent a good part of their life loving horses and working in the industry; from the marketing staff to the sales staff, to the Boutique personnel - horses are always top of mind. REAL WEDDING

Alex Francke met Peter Sohn during their freshman year at UK. They met in a theatre class where they had to write and perform a play together. Their instant friendship quickly turned into dates. Alex, who was born and raised in Lexington, holds the distinction of being the only person to hold the title of Miss Kentucky for two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Throughout her time representing the Commonwealth, Alex traveled the state speaking with schools, community organizations and healthcare centers on behalf of Kentucky Proud, the Miss America Organization and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. While Peter is not a native Kentuckian, he has proudly called Lexington home for the past seven years. “To us, Keeneland seemed like the perfect destination for our in-town and out-of-town guests,” Alex explained. “We wanted a place that was naturally gorgeous, large enough to hold all our family and friends in the same space, and that would create the most beautiful backdrop for our special day.” They also appreciated that Keeneland Hospitality worked with them to create a menu that could accommodate the bride’s food allergies without sacrificing quality or character. From a Kentucky Hot Brown tarte to the Korean skirt steak bulgogi, the menu reflected both of their families. It was important to Alex and Peter to really appreciate the little moments in the midst of their big day. “We decided to do a first look so that we could ensure we got to spend time alone together. It was the perfect decision, as we both loved getting to talk and be present before the ceremony and reception went flying by in the blink of an eye,” Alex explained. “It was in that moment it really set in that after six years together, we were finally getting married, and it was the most joyous, sweet moment ever!”

The ceremony was the cornerstone of the whole day for this couple. They were proud to use Peter’s late grandmother’s Bible on their communion table, which the couple will keep as a family heirloom. “For us, the most important part of our wedding was being united in matrimony before God and our family and friends. We knew we wanted the ceremony to be the core tenant of the entire celebration, and for the words shared there to be what stuck with people as they traveled home after the wedding.” Alex added, “I was grateful to hear so many people telling us that our ceremony touched their hearts and gave them a renewed picture of what marriage is.” The couple loved working with their vendors to bring their vision to life. The lush, romantic details helped transform the reception and ceremony spaces, offering an airy, elegant vibe. The bride created the signage herself and loved letting her creativity shine. She also put a lot of work into ensuring that their out-of-town guests would have the most comfortable, enjoyable weekend possible. Clearly, this hard work paid off; “Three garments were ripped on the dance floor, so I guess you can say our guests really had the time of their lives dancing the night away!” For other couples planning their weddings, Alex reminds you to have perspective when disagreements inevitably arise. “As everyone who has planned a wedding knows, there are many points along the way that can lead to disagreement, tension and sometimes fights with your family, friends, and your fiancé. Throughout the not-so-fun parts of the planning, it was important for us to take a step back and remember that conflict-resolution is a necessary life skill we will need for marriage,” Alex explained. “We used those disagreements to meet with couples who mentored us and talk it over with them, so we could expand our perspective on the situation and hear from people who are older and wiser than us. Those disagreements led to great conversations that have helped us build a strong foundation for our marriage.” She also encouraged other couples to show their appreciation along the way. “Never forget to express gratitude for the people who are experiencing this season with you,” she advised. One clever way she did this was to work with a jewelry designer to create custom bracelets and ball markers for the wedding party and the couple’s parents, each with special messages. It was details like these that helped make this wedding day a heartfelt, expressive and joyous celebration for everyone.

Ann-Marie Williamson Keesey met Evan Maclin Keesey during their senior year of high school through Evan’s friend, who would go on to be Ann-Marie’s roommate at Ole Miss and eventual maid of honor. They spent summers and Christmas breaks together as friends, but wouldn’t begin dating until their senior year of college. Both born and raised in Lexington, the pair currently live in Georgia, but plan to get back to Kentucky someday. They chose Springhouse Gardens for their wedding day because they found the property so beautiful. “We walked into the venue and knew it was where we wanted the wedding to be,” Ann-Marie explained. “We have also known the Weber family for decades and they are wonderful people!” The couple wanted a simple elegance for their wedding day. Sweet florals and clean, white details helped bring that to life with a charming Southern vibe. While a torrential downpour fell just five minutes before the ceremony, the rain held out for the big moment. The father of the bride was the surprise officiant, which was a special touch for everyone present. Ann-Marie wore a pearl necklace that had been worn by all the members of her mother’s side of the family, a sentimental touch that was very special to the bride’s grandmother. The clear tent and barn allowed everyone to celebrate without fear of rain. While the bride accidentally tossed the bouquet on top of the tent – and a friend had to climb to get it down so it could be caught – the tent was still a lifesaver. “It was the best day,” Ann-Marie gushed. “As cliché as it sounds, don’t stress too much about the little things. Soak up every moment of the wedding weekend – it flies by!”

"When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie... that's amore!" There's nothing better than a carefully-crafted pizza. Whether it's a classic pepperoni and extra cheese or an artisanal creation featuring this season's bounty, pizza is an almost universal love. And for good reason! It's endlessly versatile, yet always delightful. For this issue, we were inspired to share some great pizza recipes with the grill in mind. Obviously, these recipes can be adapted for indoor baking, but we love all the flavor that a grill can add to the pie. That's truly amore!

Great Pizza Crust for Grilling 1 2/3 c. warm water 2 teaspoons active dry yeast 1/4 c. olive oil 5 c. all-purpose flour 4 tsp. kosher salt

Preheat your grill. (If using a pizza stone, place it in and preheat with the grill.) Create an area of direct heat and an area of indirect heat.

Mix water and yeast together in your stand mixer’s bowl and let stand until yeast dissolves.

Stretch the dough into a round, draping over your fists to stretch into the desired size.

Stir in olive oil and salt. Add flour in two batches, mixing by hand until a shaggy dough is formed. For 6 minutes, knead the dough on low using a dough hook until a smooth ball is formed.

Flip the dough onto the grill over the direct heat, or onto the pizza stone over direct heat. Grill until the bottom is just barely cooked, then move to the indirect heat.

Using a bench scraper, cut the dough into your desired number of crusts (4 lumps will form four 12-inch pizzas). Lightly grease a pan with olive oil. Place dough into pan,

and turn to coat both sides with olive oil. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise at room temperature until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

Top your pizza with desired toppings. Close the grill and cook until toppings are cooked to desired doneness. TIP: precook any raw meats to ensure proper doneness and to avoid excess grease slicks. adapted from TheKitchn

s u o l u b a f g i F d e Gri pizza Pizza dough (see Great Pizza Crust for Grilling recipe) 20 oz. cheese (goat cheese, gorgonzola or mozzarella) in small crumbles or shredded 3 T. olive oil 2 c. caramelized onions 14 figs, sliced 1/2 c. chopped chives 1/2 purple onion, thinly sliced (optional) 1/2 c. fresh herbs or arugula (optional) sauce, if desired Optional: place cheese, olive oil and a pinch of sea salt to a food processor, and puree until smooth. Stir in chives. When ready to top pizza, spread it with sauce (if desired), and add cheese mixture. Top with onions and sliced fig, and warm through. When ready to serve, top with fresh herbs. TIP: this recipe is easily adaptable. If you like firmer cheese, place it directly on the pizza without making the puree. If you want softer figs, grill them lightly before adding them to the pizza. Sauce or no sauce. Drizzle with olive oil, balsamic vinegar or leave it plain. Throw on some prosciutto, bacon, sauteed mushrooms or chicken. Add your favorite herbs, microgreens or arugula... or not! Get playful with this delicious pie.

Never had seafood on pizza? You're missing out! Shrimp is a wonderfully versatile ingredient for pizza. It’s tasty with a plain marinara, a creamy white sauce or a fresh pesto. We recommend finishing your grilled pizza with bright, fresh herbs or microgreens. Worried about proper cooking? Feel free to grill them separately and add to the pizza just before serving. White clam pizzas are a niche favorite. Load your crust with clams, garlic, olive oil and mozzarella – skip the sauce (or even the cheese, if you prefer!) For the more culinarily adventurous, squid, mussels, anchovies and sardines are all great options. Some people even like salmon pies… to each their own!

There are few summer treats quite as delightful as a grilled peach. The kiss of the grill enhances the peach’s natural sweetness and brings a new dimension of flavor unlike anything else. How is it done? First, select slightly firm peaches: fully ripe peaches have more sugar, and are thus more inclined to burn. Halve your peaches and use a spoon to scoop out the pits. Brush each half lightly with olive oil to prevent sticking. Grill over medium heat directly on the grates until more tender, yet not falling apart. Grill marks are the surest sign that they're ready to enjoy. Once grilled, you can eat the peaches right away, or top with a scoop of ice cream. But we have a few more ideas to use these tasty little bites...

Grilled Peach Pizza Pizza dough 1/4 c. honey 1 c. balsamic vinegar Grilled peaches 1 T. Olive oil 1 clove garlic, minced 3 oz. prosciutto 5 oz. Mozzarella Fresh basil Prepare the dough (see the Great Pizza Crust for Grilling recipe). Combine honey and balsamic vinegar in a wide pot or skillet over medium heat. Simmer until reduced to under 1/2 c., stirring constantly. Sprinkle pizza with cheese. Spread prosciutto over pizza. Gently slice peaches and layer evenly over pizza. Grill until cheese is cooked to your liking. Sprinkle with fresh basil and drizzle with balsamic reduction to serve.

The market is full of uncertainties and a “bear market” can bring new anxieties and most certainly more headlines and media coverage. Simply put, a bear market is a period of falling stock prices, typically by 20% or more. The good news is that bear markets are normal and tend to be short-lived. Since 1950, there have been 10 bear markets with an average duration of 14 months (from top to bottom). An important note here is that being in a bear market does not necessarily guarantee a recession, but it certainly increases the chances. Remember that markets are

always forward-looking instruments and much of the “economic hurricane” is at least somewhat priced in. Once so much negativity is priced in, at some point investors realize the sky isn’t falling, the economic cycle will reset and there are some good opportunities out there. While it can take a while to recover from a bear market, it’s important to remember that no bear market lasts forever and historically, the market has gone on to make new highs down the road. Saying Goodbye to a Kentucky Icon

Kentucky basketball lost an icon with the passing of former All-American Mike Pratt last month after a nearly four-year battle with cancer. He was beloved by UK fans for his fabulous playing career from 1967-70 when he averaged almost 17 points and nine rebounds per game in 83 games as well as his work on the UK Radio Network since 2001 with Tom Leach. Pratt’s death at age 73 brought memories and kind words from former teammates, former UK players and many, many media members along with Kentucky fans in the Bluegrass and across the nation. “Mike knew everybody. People just gravitated to him,” Leach said. “In 20 years of working together, we never had a cross word. We just always had a wonderful time.” One of Pratt’s teammates at Kentucky was Dan Issel, UK’s all-time leading scorer and successful professional player. The two did a daily radio show in Louisville. "Forget about basketball, forget about the broadcasting, I think the legacy that Mike leaves is he was just a darn good guy," Issel said. "He never met a stranger, he always had time for everybody, and I'm going to miss him dearly.” Those missing Pratt certainly include Jim Host, the founder of Host Communications in 1972 who bought the broadcast rights to Kentucky football and basketball games in 1974 and added Pratt to the UK Radio Network. “The guy was a heck of a player. He was a much greater player than has ever been illustrated in the record books primarily because Dan Issel was so dominant as a player,” Host said. Kentucky went 71-12 in Pratt’s career, another reason he was inducted into the UK Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009. Pratt scored 1,359 points and grabbed 718 rebounds as a 6-4 forward. He had 29 double-doubles. Former UK broadcaster Ralph Hacker not only watched Pratt play but also worked with him. However, one thing always stood out about Pratt. “He may be one of the most physically tough players I have ever seen. I remember a game where he took an elbow to the face and his nose was broken. He came over, grabbed a towel, put his nose back in place and finished the game,” Hacker said. “He was just a special sort of guy.” Leach and Pratt 20 recently released a book, “Kentucky Basketball: Two decades behind the scenes.” It shares many of the stories the two experienced together and now is a lasting tribute to Pratt. “When he called me about doing the book, it was not at the best time of year for me. But you don’t say no him because he never said no to you,” Leach said. “Now I am so thankful we got that done.” Someone has to join Leach on the broadcasts next season. A lot of names have been mentioned as possible analysts and Host believes the analyst needs to be a former UK player to connect better with the UK fanbase. Pratt connected not only because he was a player but also because he had been a college coach and also had playing professional experience. He understood what the program meant to fans. “He talked to you and never down to you,” Leach said. “Fans appreciated that.” That’s part of why Pratt will be missed by so many and remembered much like Cawood Ledford, Joe Hall and Bill Keightley — other UK basketball icons — have been since their passing. “Mike was so highly thought of by everyone he played with and against. I don’t know a single person I have been involved with that was a better person than Mike Pratt,” Host said. “Nobody is ever going to fill his shoes. They are just going to try and fit in his shoes.”

Seven-year-old Iker doesn’t believe in the word “can’t.” He is living proof of the power of possibilities. “I’m very smart,” the enthusiastic youth says matter-offactly. “I can do anything.” His parents, Alfonso and Abigail, found out Iker had a congenital lower limb deficiency via an ultrasound. News like this can be overwhelming, with many families saying they feel alone as they navigate those early days. “We knew he was going to be born missing his right leg,” Alfonso said. “We started looking everywhere for help.” The family had moved to the U.S. from Mexico and were living in Tennessee at the time. They visited Shriners Children’s Lexington and instantly felt at home. Alfonso summed it up succinctly: “They have treated us like family since day one.”

‘An atmosphere of hope and healing’ Located in a state-of-the-art medical center just across from the UK HealthCare campus, Shriners Children’s Lexington treats more than 16,000 patients each year. The pediatric outpatient surgical and rehabilitation center is one of 20 Shriners Children’s facilities in the U.S. and provides care for orthopedic conditions ranging from the rare to the routine — from common childhood injuries to complex genetic conditions — all regardless of the families’ ability to pay. Some of the pediatric specialties include clubfoot and other foot disorders, infantile and adolescent hip disorders, hand and upper-extremity disorders, limb deficiencies and amputations, rheumatology, sports injuries, frac-

tures, scoliosis and other spinal deformities and orthopedic conditions related to cerebral palsy, spina bifida, osteogenesis imperfecta and more. One of the elements that sets Shriners Children’s apart is that it provides care for children 18 and younger regardless of insurance status. “At Shriners Children’s Lexington, we put patients first. Family-centered care creates an atmosphere of hope and healing. Our medical teams take the time to listen and help patients reach for their own goals,” said Tony Lewgood, administrator for the medical center. “That allows us to get to the heart of healthcare, which should always be providing exceptional care to those who need it. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we’re able to do just that.” And the organization has been doing it for a long time. In 2022, Shriners International and Shriners Children’s mark very special anniversaries. The fraternity was created 150 years ago and, 50 years later, the caring and visionary fraternity members founded their official philanthropy by opening the first Shriners Hospital for Children in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1922 to care for children battling polio. Lexington’s hospital opened four years later in 1926. What began as one hospital is now a unique healthcare system with a reputation for finding answers and giving families hope worldwide. “Our founding Shriners were courageous when they opened our first hospital a century ago to care for children with polio,” Lewgood said. “Today that same courageous spirit is transitioning our system of facilities to meet the current needs of children.” Needs like those of Iker and his family.

‘Best place for kids’ Iker sees Janet Walker, M.D., a pediatric orthopedic surgeon who specializes in limb differences. He also sees the Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetic Services – Midwest, LLC. housed at the Lexington medical center. He started using a prosthetic leg when he was 11 months old and recently received his third prosthetic. His family has since moved to Michigan, which requires a 7-hour trip to Lexington. His parents explored orthopedic and prosthetic providers closer to their new home, but decided Shriners Children’s is where Iker belongs. “Everything Shriners has and does is special – the team, the kindness of the people,” Abigail said. “It’s the best place for kids with special needs like Iker.” Leading healthcare experts agree. For three consecutive years, Shriners Children’s Lexington, in partnership with UK HealthCare’s Kentucky Children’s Hospital, has been named among the Top 50 Best Hospitals for Pediatric Orthopedics by U.S. News and World Report. Each of the physicians who practice at the Shriners medical center also practice at UK HealthCare, and many are professors at the UK College of Medicine. Consulting physicians from UK HealthCare also serve Shriners patients for things like anesthesia, rheumatology, sports medicine and plastic surgery. Shriners Children’s Lexington has been serving children and families in the area for nearly 96 years. The first facility opened as a 20-bed wing connected to the children’s ward of Good Samaritan Hospital. Shortly after the hospital opened, it became evident that the 20-bed wing was not large enough to treat the number of children with orthopedic conditions seeking care. A new free-standing hospital with 50 beds opened in 1955 on Richmond Road and a newer hospital was built near that same location in the 1980s. The current medical center opened at 110 Conn Terrace five years ago. The 110,000-square-foot medical center features two surgical suites, six pre- and post-surgery rooms and a post-anesthesia care unit, a motion analysis laboratory, 20 patient exam rooms in an outpatient clinic, four infusion rooms, a radiology department that provides traditional and low-dose imaging, a rehabilitation gym and treatment rooms for physical and occupational therapy, an observation playground, a research department and a custom prosthetics and orthotics department. “A significant benefit of our care model is we guide families through the entire journey right here in our facility,” Lewgood said. “This streamlines the patient’s care and allows providers at every level – from the surgeon to the physical therapist to the radiology tech and more – to collaborate to ensure the best possible outcome for our kids and our families.”

‘He can do everything’ Today, Iker is going into second grade. He loves playing freeze tag with his friends on the school playground and his favorite subject is math. When he’s at home, he likes playing with his giant LEGO’S and does “virtual surgeries” through an app on his mom’s phone. He dreams of being a surgeon one day to help kids like himself. His parents said his can-do attitude has been integral in his successes. “He’s so strong,” Abigail said. “He never says, ‘I can’t.’ He can do everything he puts his mind to.” Shriners Children’s Lexington has played a role, too. “We set out looking for the very best option for our son,” Alfonso said. “And Shriners has been it.” •

After a two-year hiatus, the Roots and Heritage Festival is back—and the community is thrilled. According to Chairperson Kimberly Henderson Baird, “I cannot begin to talk about the comments and excitement that has been generated when we announced we were returning in person! After having the festival in person each year since 1989, it was devastating to have to cancel in 2020 and 2021 for the pandemic. The community was upset but understood. We are very glad that we can reunite in person this year.” The festival has been an integral part of bringing regional diversity through entertainment and education for over 30 years. In the late eighties, a group of community volunteers came together with a common goal: to highlight the history of the East End area and celebrate African American culture and achievement. What began as a grassroots one-day festival has grow to three-day, kick-off weekend and a month-long celebration that has been named a “Top Ten” festival in the region by the Kentucky Tourism Council and “One Of The Top Twenty Events” in the Southeast tourism region.

Roots and Heritage promotes inclusion, pride, and unity while offering top-notch music, shopping, food, and family-focused activities. “Lexington is very diverse; highlighting the culture, achievement, and diversity of those in the community helps us to better understand and appreciate each other—and in that education, hopefully, to strengthen us as a city,” Baird said. She has been heading up the action for the last 17 years. In addition to her role as chairperson, Baird has served as an Assistant Commonwealth Attorney since 1996 and became the First Assistant in 2016. She is also an advisor and instructor to the Lexington Police Department and a guest instructor at Eastern Kentucky University, Department of Criminal Justice Training. Each year, Baird most looks forward to witnessing the convergence of community. She said, “Standing on stage at the end of each evening and seeing the sea of hundreds of people in the crowd and the vendors lined up for three blocks. That’s the sign of a truly successful festival.” She also feels the family atmosphere of the festival makes it truly unique and special: “People plan their family reunions around the festival and old friends are able to see each other and catch up. It is such a warm and loving atmosphere that energizes me to keep being a part of the festival each year.” In closing, Baird said, “A first time attendee will greatly enjoy every aspect of the festival. The festival is a wonderful experience for anyone to attend. “I have a strong foundation in community resources and have a lot of experience working with multiple organizations that are beneficial to families needing childcare” says Billie. “My main focus is ensuring families receive quality and safe childcare that they deserve, and if there is a barrier hindering them from starting that process, I will work hard to conquer it.” Billie’s attitude toward quality childcare fits in well with the Kids R Kids mission, and is similar to that of founders Pat and Janice Vinson. What began as a day nursery for children turned into an international franchise with some love for children along with hard work and determination. In 1961, Pat Vinson and his mother, June, renovated their home into a day nursery and named it Kiddie City. As group childcare wasn’t as popular in the 60s as it is today, this was a truly innovative concept, but a challenge Pat and June were ready to take on. After a decade of faith, hard work, and lovingly caring for children, the idea of franchising Kiddie City came to Pat’s mind. Thus, Kids R Kids International, Inc. was formed and Kids R Kids became the first childcare company to franchise! Even after multiple decades of providing childcare, Kids R Kids is still operating by the same philosophy they began with: providing a safe and loving environment for all children. With dedicated teachers that have been serving families for up to 25 years, Billie says that knowing he and his staff played a small role in the educational development of children is a wonderful feeling. “We are seeing some of our former students graduate from high school and college. These families often invite their former Kids R Kids teachers to participate in graduation ceremonies or send thank you cards.” Though their role has been fulfilled, Billie says they all look forward to playing an even bigger role in the future of all the children they serve. Along with their motto, Kids R Kids uses the whole-child approach to ensure each child’s success, including character, intellect, and creative development. When children feel they are treated with kindness and unconditional love, they will be more than prepared for school achievements, healthy relationships, and overall success in life.
