Need style inspiration for the big race?
Because Breeders' Cup falls on November 4-5, the traditional style has always leaned more toward late fall and winter styles. Many people sport Breeders' Cup purple! While there's a chance the day may be warm, you'll still want a fashionable coat or cape to stave off the morning and evening chill.
While the Derby is known for flashy, bright hats that are often floral-inspired, the Breeders' Cup tends more toward fascinators and warm hats, like berets and fedoras. Think refined equestrian rather than Southern belle.

Laser Hair Removal is the Best Self-care Treatment
Self-care is doing what makes you happy and healthy. Anything to help our wellbeing and self-confidence is important, including daily grooming routines.
Dealing with unwanted body hair affects our time and budget. Laser hair removal gives you more time and the confidence to face the world without worrying about stubble. We talked to Lexington’s laser hair removal experts at Milan Laser Hair Removal to learn why laser hair removal is the ultimate self-care treatment!
1. It saves you time.
The average person spends about 39 hours a year shaving. And you have to make monthly salon waxing appointments for temporary results. With laser hair removal, you get permanent results when done properly. A laser pulse is delivered directly to the hair follicle, targeting the pigment in the hair. The heat from the laser destroys the follicle, and that hair can never grow again. The average Milan Laser client is 95%+ hair-free within seven to 10 treatments.
2. It saves you money.
About $3,800 is spent over a lifetime on shaving essentials . For salon appointments, you spend $24,000 over a lifetime. Money spent on waxing and shaving costs more in the end.
For the best value, try places that off er payment plans. For instance, Milan Laser offers payment plans that can be as low as $29 a month. And because new follicles can become active, and new hair can grow due to hormone changes, touch-up fees come in. To guarantee lifetime results,
some places offer unlimited packages, like Milan Laser, so you’ll never worry about touch-up fees
3. It’s more comfortable than you think!
Many say laser hair removal feels like the sting of a rubber band snapping, but only for a millisecond—the time it takes to zap your hair. Many lasers, such as Milan’s Candela GentleMax Pro, have built-in comfort features. Some less sophisticated lasers use numbing creams, gels, or chilled air. The Candela uses a cooling cryogen mist released after each laser pulse to reduce any potential discomfort
4. It’s for everyone!
It’s not just for a certain age, gender, or skin tone! Laser hair removal works for all skin tones when performed correctly.
It’s important to find a provider with technologies to treat the entire skin tone spectrum. For instance, Milan Laser’s Candela GentleMax Pro includes two lasers— the Nd: YAG for darker skin and the Alexandrite for lighter skin tones. Because of this, places like Milan Laser can create a customized treatment plan for everyone.
READY TO NEVER SHAVE AGAIN?
Give Milan Laser a call at 833-NO-RAZOR or go in for a free consultation. Visit a local laser hair removal expert at either of Milan Laser’s Lexington locations.

Ask Abby Vaughn
HOW CAN I BE A CHAMPION INVESTOR?
HI ABBY: What an exciting time for racing fans! Breeders’ Cup is back at Keeneland and I am ready to join the world’s best. Do you have any financial strategies on how to be a champion investor at the track? It’s definitely more fun than traditional investing in my book!
—BETTING BEN
HI BEN: You are right! It really is an exciting time, here in Kentucky. Over the years I’ve explored many strategies for picking the ponies, from pedigree to preference in jockey silks. You name it and I’ve probably tried it. The only successful strategy to winning at the track is to go in understanding the risks and plan on having a good time no matter the outcome! The same can be said for investing during this difficult environment. While the opportunity to turn risk into financial reward can be appealing for some, a wise mentor once told me that
investing should never be exciting, in fact, it should be quite boring.
Now I would never consider my career to be boring because I have the amazing opportunity to help people accomplish their financial goals. However, seeing clients achieve their goals is the exciting part; the process of getting them there should be what’s boring. Longshot investments lose more often than they win and when you are coming down the final stretch, you may come up short in achieving your financial goals.
That’s why we take a goals-based approach to investing, focusing on providing our clients with the smoothest ride to the finish line. We believe in the importance of asset quality, a balanced diversified portfolio, and managing downside risks to help you achieve your goals. Slow and steady may be boring but you know what they say….it wins the race!

with Lexington's Spendthrift Farm
by: allyson mattinglyEstablished in 1937, Spendthrift Farm is one of the most historic and iconic brands in the Thoroughbred and horse racing industry. Now, in its 85th year of operation, the farm is growing into a new space - tourism.
Last year, Spendthrift broke ground on a 7,000 squarefeet visitors center that will become the centerpiece of the farm, located in between Spendthrift’s iconic stallion complex and old plantation-style mansion serving as its office. The new facility - named the B. Wayne Hughes Visitors Center - will be the hub for Spendthrift’s tourism, carrying out the vision of Hughes, the farm’s modern-day founder who passed away in August of 2021.
A few years ago, the late Hughes had championed an industry upstart called MyRacehorse.com, an online horse racing ownership company that offered equitybased microshares in racehorses to the public. In 2020, MyRacehorse.com experienced a watershed moment after Hughes offered up microshares in his promising three-year-old colt Authentic, who would go on to win the 2020 Kentucky Derby for 5,314 microshare owners.
That served as motivation for Hughes to further invest in tourism and the fan experience at Spendthrift, with the goal of continuing to make the Thoroughbred industry more accessible. The visitors center project is being seen through by his daughter, Tamara Gustavson, and son-inlaw, Eric Gustavson, who also carry on the legacy as the owners of Spendthrift.
“We take it on as our responsibility now to continue to build on the vision Wayne had for Spendthrift and the sport of horse racing,” said Eric Gustavson. “It was only fitting to name the new visitors center after him because it largely represents his love for the industry and desire to share it with people. That’s what we look forward to doing.”
Set to open to the public this fall, the two-story B. Wayne Hughes Visitors Center contains an impressive trophy room, entertainment & office spaces, and a gift shop. A life-size statue of the late Spendthrift foundation sire, Malibu Moon, graces the outside of the facility, and the 2020 Kentucky Derby trophy and blanket of roses from Authentic’s historic victory will be featured inside, along with champion Beholder’s Breeders’ Cup & Eclipse Award trophies, various artifacts by some of the farm’s most famous horses, an interactive history of Spendthrift, a horse memorial, and more.
Spendthrift is the world’s largest commercial Thoroughbred breeding farm, with 27 stallions currently in service. Located in North Lexington along Iron Works Pike, the 1200-acre farm is home to around 300 Thoroughbreds at any given time. Ten Kentucky Derby winners have resided at Spendthrift, including Triple Crown winners Seattle Slew and Affirmed.
Authentic, the 2020 Horse of the Year in North America, is among the most popular current residents at the farm, along with his sire Into Mischief - who is the world’s most valuable horse - and Into Mischief’s sister, Beholder, who is a three-time champion that was inducted into racing’s hall of fame this summer.
As an industry leader, Spendthrift takes the responsibility that comes with that position very seriously. The farm’s primary mission is to strengthen the Thoroughbred industry and be true to the stewardship of its historic brand and land. They do that by first focusing on what’s most important - the horse.
“These majestic athletes are the reason we are all here and so drawn to this wonderful sport,” says Joel Cunningham, Spendthrift’s Marketing Director. “We want to do a better job of sharing the horses and our story. Much of the future success in our mission will be decided by the breeding community and fans of horse racing. Both groups are paramount to the longevity of this great game. We have been striving for years to provide the best stallions and breeding opportunities possible for our breeders, and, now, we’re looking to provide the best fan experience possible for our tour guests who visit the farm.”
Before Spendthrift returned as one of the industry’s premier Thoroughbred breeding farms, it went through hard times in the 90s and early 2000s. Spendthrift had become the first breeding farm ever listed on a stock exchange in the 80s following decades of tremendous success. But, in a sudden twist of fortune brought on by the crash of the Thoroughbred yearling sales market and poor business decisions, the farm was broken up and sold.
Hughes purchased Spendthrift in 2004 and immediately began restoring its iconic architecture, much of which had become dilapidated. He also restored Spendthrift’s brand and reputation, returning the farm to its position atop the industry. His motto was “breeders are the backbone of the Thoroughbred industry”, something regularly heard by those who worked with Hughes at Spendthrift. That mantra was the motivation for Spendthrift’s slogan today, which is “The Breeders’ Farm” - a testament to Spendthrift’s loyal customers and the farm’s spirit of doing business. That spirit lives on at Spendthrift, which is now dedicated to making its new visitors center a focal point for anyone interested in the sport of horse racing.
“Central Kentucky is the Thoroughbred epicenter of the world, and people interested in horse racing should be able to tour beautiful and historic horse farms and industry destinations that are so important to the area’s culture and economy,” says Cunningham. “There is nothing like the thrill of horse racing and the lifestyle of the Thoroughbred industry, and there’s certainly nothing more signature to the Kentucky experience.”

The Passion forPformanc
at Spy Coast Farms
Inspired by watching sport horses compete in the ring while acting as a show mom for her daughter, Lisa Lourie realized that America had some of the best horses and imported bloodlines in the world. Although among the best in the world, Lisa did not consider these horses to be utilized to their full potential for breeding. She then began acquiring warmblood mares and stallions for the show jumping discipline, which eventually turned into a fully functioning farm.
by: allyson mattinglyLisa initially founded Spy Coast Farm in 2003 and moved operations to Kentucky in 2008, where she hired Modesty Burleson, VMD, to oversee breeding operations. Now, the farm breeds approximately 50 foals a year, half of which are for clients, at her expansive farm adjacent to the Kentucky Horse Park (KHP). Spy Coast Farm specializes in the breeding and development of top performance horses, employing an integrated approach to all its reproductive, training, competition, and sales efforts. With a mission to train and breed top quality sport horses while improving the equine industry and the Lexington community, Spy Coast also extends its services to the public through their state-of-the-art Rehabilitation and Fitness Center, CEM quarantine services, and Equine Education Center.
With treatments such as regenerative laser therapy, two water treadmills, a cold saltwater spa, acupuncture, and more, Spy Coasts’ rehabilitation center operates under specialized staff and highly experienced sports medicine veterinarian, Julie Vargas, DVM. Gaining inspiration from Joris de Brabander, one of the world’s top sport horse breeders and Belgian veterinarian, Lisa knew she had to hire only the best and brightest Lexington had to offer. This center is designed to help all breeds and disciplines build fitness and recover from a variety of injuries, including post-surgical lay-ups, bone bruising or fracturing, and soft tissue injuries. You can be sure that your horse is in more than capable hands when recovering at Spy Coast, and with the farm’s convenient location, it’s easy to access for both locals and traveling horsemen.
In addition to Spy Coast’s rehab services, the farm’s Equine Education Center (EEC) features an event space, allowing room for equine conferences, meetings, clinics, seminars, and even live horse demonstrations. For all-day events that may require lunch or dinner, the EEC includes an Event Room with space for up to 180 people featuring a catering kitchen, bar, large porch for entertaining, and a view of the luxurious indoor arena with seating available. Outside of the Event Room, there is a dual purpose ‘Middle Room,’ stadium style Lecture Hall, eight over-sized demonstration stalls, and a lab room. What more could you need?
For horses that need to be quarantined, Spy Coast offers a CEM Quarantine facility with stalls for 22 horses and spacious grassy paddocks. Don’t worry, your horse’s training won’t be interrupted, as there is access to a treadmill, riding ring with fiber and sand footing, and professional riding services. Within the 14 to 18 day Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM) testing period for mares, and the 30 to 35 day period for stallions, your horse will be living the high life.
In an industry that does not always value transparency, Spy Coast is doing all it can to change that by offering ongoing support, advice, and services to those interested in breeding the world’s most talented, yet affordable, sport horses. Spy Coast also offers complimentary consultations to clients interested in breeding to stallions who stand at the farm, in an effort to optimize your experience and results. Notable stallions who are managed through Spy Coast include Best Regards, Capital Colnardo, Chaqui Z, Diktator van de Boslandhoeve, Rexar du Houssoit, and Royce, all of which are available for breeding.
Once you breed to Spy Coast’s fantastic options for sires, you may need a trainer for your young horse as well! Each young horse is unique, meaning they may require a customized training program to suit their needs. Luckily, Spy Coast has a well-trained, flexible staff ready to accommodate all young horses’ needs, including staff and riders who specialize in multiple disciplines, such as eventing, jumping, showing and hunters. In an effort to showcase a young horse’s talent, Spy Coast offers the Young Horse Show Series in partnership with the North American Studbook. This series offers a low-cost way to give your horse not only more exposure, but also promotes age appropriate training, education, and showing opportunities for yearlings up to five year olds.
Know someone looking for an internship? Spy Coast has plenty of opportunities for those, too. These internships provide an ample amount of hands-on experience, as well as educational opportunities geared toward each special division of the farm. Combine this experience with mentorship and education, and get individuals who are well-prepared for the growth of the sport horse industry.

EveryThingsPet Parent Should Know
by Amanda HarperStudy Body Language
All animals use their postures to communicate to one another – and that can give you some very important hints about how your pet is feeling! Did you know that when a dog leans down on his forelegs with his rump up in the air, he’s probably feeling playful? And did you know that mimicking this posture can encourage a dog to be friendly with you (no need to get down on the ground; bending your knees slightly and placing your hands on your knees while speaking in an excited tone usually does the trick!)
It’s Just Like Baby-Proofing
Pets are basically like toddlers; they have a knack for knocking things over, a natural curiosity about everything and a seemingly relentless drive to find snacks. Even if your pet stays in an enclosure, you’ll be amazed at the ingenuity your little friend can display when you’re not looking – just like a kid. Make sure your home is a safe environment for your pet – even those “hard to reach” places you think they can’t get to.
What To Eat –and Not Eat
Animals have different dietary needs. Their nutritional needs obviously vary by species, but sometimes also by age or even breed. It’s also important to know what your pet can’t eat – even if it’s not exactly food, such as lilies (they’re highly toxic to dogs and cats.)
Budget Bites
Keeping a pet ain’t free. It’s important to consider your pet as a part of your household when it comes to the budget. Be sure to set aside an emergency fund just for your pets in case they need veterinary care. And budget for little splurges, like matching Halloween costumes or special treats.
Training Ain’t Easy, But It’s Necessary
Training your pet takes diligence, patience, consistency and a whole lot of time. If you aren’t able to do it on your own, paid training courses are absolutely worth the cost; think of it as an investment in your future happiness and peace of mind.

Being a pet owner means tackling a lot of teachable moments with kids. It’s important to teach kids empathy and care for animals, as well as respect for animals as both friends and potential dangers. Unfortunately, it also sometimes means teaching about loss. It’s a big
TOP TIP:
Save your vet's phone number and address in your contacts so you don't have to rely on Google in the event of an emergency.
responsibility to help kids make room in their hearts for animals, but you can do it!
Unique Pets Bring Unique Challenges
Unusual pets can be a lot of fun, and it’s definitely an opportunity for you to learn a lot about the proper care and keeping of these unique creatures. But the more “out there” a pet is, the harder it can be to find veterinary care, food, care supplies and more. There can also be red tape involved with more exotic animals. Be sure to educate yourself completely before diving in!
Know The Bad Signs
It’s incredibly important that you know what illness looks like in your pet. What’s perfectly normal for a dog (panting, for example) can be a sign of trouble in a cat. And sometimes, pet illness looks very confusing for a pet owner; for instance, seizures in cats can look like odd behavior that you might shrug off. It’s worth looking up the signs of sickness in your pet and educating yourself on what to look for.
It’s hard to make generalizations about all species of pet, but generally speaking, these symptoms are worth looking into; lethargy, loss of appetite, change in bowel habits, confusion, seizures, unexplained weight loss/gain,
consistent coughing, wheezing, hair loss/itchy skin, eye changes, pale gums, joint stiffness or a change in their eyes. While not all of these symptoms necessarily mean there’s an emergency – and this list is by no means comprehensive – it’s worth observing your pet more closely and getting in touch with your vet.
Have an Emergency Plan
It’s important to do your research before you have a pet emergency. Keep the number for your vet and a 24-hour veterinary clinic you trust on the fridge and in your phone, along with your other emergency numbers; save their addresses in your maps app, as well. If you’re going on vacation with your pet, research local vet clinics at your destination before you go. Talk to the rest of your household about your pet emergency plans.
It’s Worth It!
Having a pet companion is an incredibly enriching experience. Studies tell us that they reduce our overall stress – in spite of any “accidents” on the carpet – and reduce levels of depression, loneliness and anxiety in members of their household. They can also help improve your cardiovascular health. That’s nothing to say of all the love you’ll feel! •

richmond road veterinary clinic
“All of our veterinarians are from Kentucky, and have a heart for the Bluegrass and caring for Central Kentucky pets,” the team at Richmond Road Veterinary Clinic explained. “Our clients and patients are like family and friends to us, and we pride ourselves on knowing you and your pet by name.”
The team is able to deliver such highquality care thanks in large part to the passionate model set by practice owner Dr. Kevin Smith.
“Every day is an adventure. I get to see dogs and cats of all shapes and sizes. I fell in love with medicine,” Dr. Smith said of his first work experience at a local veterinarian clinic. “I loved helping to make them feel better and it has been my passion ever since. Being a veterinarian is not my job, it is who I am to my core.”
Building on this foundation, Richmond Road Veterinary Clinic assures every client that its work is not just a job, but truly a calling. That’s clear in the care its team provides, as well as its’ commitment to the Lexington Humane Society as their adoption program sponsor since 2018. LHS’s mission is to place adoptable animals into forever homes.
“Caring for thousands of pets each year is like caring for any member of your family,” the team said.

At PetVet365, pets run to greet their veterinarian.
Just ask Fenway.
Fenway, 9-year-old orange Tabby cat, was terrified to visit the veterinarian until he met Dr. Dianne Dawes and her team at PetVet365 in Lexington.
“I’ve gone to veterinarians from Lexington to Santa Fe, New Mexico. No one could get near Fenway to trim his nails or provide him with the care he needed,” says Karen Joly, Fenway’s mom. “He was so traumatized by his past veterinary experiences.”
That all changed in July when Fenway went to PetVet365.
“We see a lot of pets like Fenway who exhibit fear, anxiety or stress when they come to the veterinarian,” says Dr. Dawes. “We take a different approach to ensure all pets have a fear-free experience. We take the time to understand what’s causing the pet’s anxiety and work with the pet parent to develop a personalized care plan to ensure the best experience.”
Our Fear Free Certified team knows how to keep pets comfortable and entertained during their visit. Our exam rooms are designed just like a family room, where pets are allowed on the furniture. Comfort is key for the pet. That’s why our veterinarians will examine your pet from the floor, the couch or the pet parent’s lap. We want to ensure your pet is at ease. We also have cat-specific rooms. And, of course, treats are must, Dr. Dawes adds.
“It’s just been a life-changing experience for Fenway and his kitten sister Maybelle,” Karen says, who lives in Versailles KY. “I didn’t think it was possible. I just love the whole pet PetVet365 experience from the relaxing exam rooms to how Dr. Dawes and the team invested the time in Fenway. It’s been a true partnership.”

Leaf Peeping
Weekend Getaways
October
brings the sweep of fall color through North America. It's an enchanting time, perfect for weekend trips to take in nature's beauty (and snap a few photos). With the chill of autumn creeping in, this is the ideal time for relaxing getaways, complete with cozy sweaters, warm drinks and beautiful vistas.
When is the peak time to go leaf peeping? Generally speaking, fall's color season progresses from north to south. But elevation plays a key factor; the cooler temperatures further up mean the leaves turn more quickly than the low, warmer valleys. For instance, the Great Smoky Mountains are predicted to hit their peak the first and second weeks of October, while central Kentucky will reach its peak in mid-to-late October.
Dedicated leaf peepers pay attention to peak color heat maps and plan their weekend excursions accordingly; if you're smart, you can hit multiple vacation spots during their most beautiful moments this fall! by Amanda Harper

CARDIGAN
Cardigans are open sweaters that typically feature buttons for easy closing, should you get chilly. These sweaters are great for throwing on over a light blouse or t-shirt, especially when you don’t want something bulky.
PULLOVER
A pullover sweater is pretty much any sweater that you pull on over your head without buttoning all the way up. Two main differences exist in this category, being crewneck versus v-neck, which includes quarter-zips. V-necks can easily be layered over a fitted blouse or collared shirt. Always be sure to tuck in your undershirt under a v-neck sweater unless it's a crop.
CREWNECK
This classic style, derived from sport sweaters worn by athletes, can be "sported" with virtually anything, by men or women. Crewnecks are characterized by round necklines, no collar, and wool or cotton fabric, making them the perfect option for those lazy days when you don’t want to go completely casual. For a fun styling twist, dress them up with skirts, dresses, or a collared undershirt.
TURTLENECK
Even if you have trouble defining other types of sweaters, turtlenecks are typically really easy to point out. To qualify as a turtleneck, the sweater must have a high collar that completely folds over itself while still covering the whole neck; a "turtleneck" that only reaches halfway up the neck is considered a mock turtleneck. Mock turtlenecks are much less constricting and great for transitional weather.
FISHERMAN’S SWEATER/ARAN
Once made to keep Irish fishermen warm and dry while fishing, these have become an autumn and winter staple. A fisherman’s sweater, also called an Aran, are heavy, often hand-knitted sweaters made to keep you warm and protected from the elements. These stylish sweaters are typically made from sheep’s wool in a pullover or crewneck style. The most iconic fisherman's sweater is a cream cable-knit sweater that will have you whistling "Danny Boy" in no time.
CASHMERE
Meet the holy grail of sweaters. True cashmere sweaters are made from luxurious cashmere or pashmina goat wool, making them soft and never itchy, unlike other kinds of wool. Cashmere sweaters are lightweight so they will keep you cozy without causing you to overheat. This material can be quite spendy; sweaters made with cashmere blends have come onto the market to make this luxurious fabric more accessible. Be sure to check the label for materials and percentage of cashmere.
MERINO
Wool made from Merino fibers is generally more lightweight and softer. It's great for outdoor wear because it wicks away moisture, helps regulate your temperature and cancels out odors. If you tend to put the "sweat" in sweater, this is the material for you!

lexington treasure
written by: fran elsen photos by: shelly fryman, mahan multimediaSouth Ashland Avenue has always been a street envied by many as it boasts some of Lexington’s most exclusive historic homes. Janet and Carson Evans purchased their home here in 2016 after several years of driving by to catch a glimpse from the road of its grand front porch and interior beauty through leaded glass windows. “This house was always the most appealing one on the street with all of the lights on and the cozy setting” Janet says. “I would often go out of my way just to see it”.
Janet and Carson were both widowed and decided to sell their individual homes and purchase a home they could call their own. After mentioning to a realtor friend she’d love to own the house, they did a little digging and found out the owner was ready to sell. The Dutch Colonial Revival home was built in 1898 by J. Albert Howard as part of the development of what was then known as Woodland Subdivision. Some records show that the house was built alongside a house next door so that his two daughters would each have a home on the street. Mr. Howard also built the original Fayette County Court House, in partnership with George Clark. Good Samaritan Hospital is another structure built by Howard.
The home today is a curated collection of art and antiques, as Janet loves color and supporting local talent. Tiger Oak (also known as ¾ sawn wood) graces the massive entryway, leading the eyes to large pocket doors opening to solid cherry walls and built-ins in the next room. There are a total of eight fireplaces in the house and all four on the first floor are in working order, including the one in the kitchen which is put to good use during the colder months. Windows flood the home with lots of sunlight, including the gorgeous custom cut leaded glass flanking the front
door. Nooks and crannies abound in the home, and the sparkling glass doorknobs on every door are not to be missed when taking it all in. Janet is careful to maintain the original integrity of the home while incorporating modern touches and new colors. When speaking to her decorating style, Janet wants the house to look “collected”. She enjoys the juxtaposition of antiques and modern, abstract art to create a lived-in feel to the home. It’s traditional, yet eclectic at the same time.
"I wt the house to look llected. I joy the juxtosition of tiques d modn, stct t to eate a lived-in feel to the home."
Their most recent project on the home was the backyard pool area, which included replacing the old cracked bluestone with heartstone and artificial turf around the perimeter and new landscaping. The patio was extended when they moved in to make room for more seating around the pool. The painted horse in the backyard was painted by Carson’s deceased wife, Lida Evans, during the second Horsemania project. Lida was a local artist and wanted the horse to depict flowers indigenous to Kentucky. “Raise A Native” has found it’s perfect spot at the house after convincing their next door neighbors to give it up. “It’s a nice remembrance for the children to see it there when they visit” Janet says.
The Evans' love to entertain and the flow is conducive to a big crowd if needed. “You could have 100 people in and you’d never know it” according to Janet. They literally “use every single room in the house”. Family meals are always lovely, and Janet’s son was married in the house during Covid. There have been a total of three weddings in the house over the years, and one passing, according to records.
While there are seemingly never-ending updates and upkeep, Janet loves a project and recently turned the basement area into a full fledged poolhouse/bar/changing area, complete with individual dressing rooms and modern décor.
“We want people to still get that “wow” factor when they walk through these doors” and they admit they still get that feeling themselves. Their favorite part of owning this home? “It feels like it wraps its arms around you”. Indeed it does.

There is no eyeshadow trend as classic as the beloved smokey eye. Though achieving this sultry, sexy nighttime look can be quite intimidating at first, the steps are not as complex as they may seem. With a few helpful tips and tricks, you can be an expert in rocking smokey eye glam in no time.
prime your lids
Though not absolutely necessary for a rockin’ smokey eye, primer will help the rest of your eye makeup stay put. Priming, especially if you tend to get a little oily, allows you to create a good foundation for the rest of your eye products and build beautiful colors that last throughout the night. Smokey eyes require blending, re-blending, and even more blending, so having a proper base makes the process that much easier.

Just because you’re creating a beautiful smokey eye doesn’t mean you have to use black eyeshadow. Try playing around with dark shades of browns, purples, or any color you prefer! You should, though, have at least several shades on hand to complete your look, such as a light, medium, and dark shade. Begin with your lightest shade and apply this from your lower lid to your crease. Next, take your medium shade and layer it on top of your light shade, following the natural shape of your eye. Then, take your darkest shade and apply in your crease to create depth and a bombshell look.

blend baby blend
Blending is by far the most important step of getting that classic smokey eye look. Without blending, your colors can look harsh instead of seamlessly gradient. To blend your shades, take a fluffy eyeshadow brush and create small circles until all the colors are blended together without any harsh lines. Either clean the brush after each shade or switch to a different brush to ensure you aren’t blending unwanted colors together. In your crease, simply swipe your brush back and forth in a “windshield wiper” fashion to blend the color.

Always have a highlighter or lighter base shade on hand for highlighting your brow bone and inner crease of your eye.
Treat yourself to quality makeup brushes! Good quality brushes will help you achieve professional results.
apply your liner
After applying and blending your gradient of colors, use a black eyeliner to get the full smokey eye glam look. Make sure to use an eye pencil or a gel eyeliner, rather than liquid eyeliner, as you’re going for the smudgy, sexy, smokey look! We recommend using a kohl eyeliner as it can be easily smudged. Apply your liner along your upper and lower lash line and smudge it with an eyeshadow brush. Smudging your eyeliner will ensure you get that smoldering eye look that we know and love.
Don’t forget to line your waterline as well. This step can make a big difference in your smokey eye and make your eyes look whiter and more open. Depending on the colors you’ve chosen for your eyelids, you don’t necessarily need to use a black eyeliner. Shades such as teal, violet, or white can be used for a fun pop of color on your waterline.

If you have small eyes, using a black eyeliner may make your eyes look even smaller. Try switching your black liner out for a lighter shade, such as brown or beige.

The last step in a perfect smokey eye, or any eye makeup look, is mascara. Curl your lashes then apply several coats of a volumizing mascara. For the most volume, start at the base of your lashes and wiggle your wand upwards. Stay lighthanded on your bottom lashes as you don’t want them to come out clumpy or spidery, ruining all your hard work! If you want some extra va-va-voom, you can apply false lashes as well.

If you apply mascara to your bottom lashes, use a waterproof mascara as our under eyes tend to smudge throughout the day.

Transitioning from summer to fall is one of my favorite times of the year with changing hairstyles, swapping out the tank tops for sweaters, and the sandals for booties. Even if you think you’re past the age for a seasonal change, get that backto-school giddy feeling with a new cut, color, and style this fall.

We’re traveling back to the 70s this fall, embracing the iconic Farrah Fawcett too-cool-tocare, blowout style. We’re recently familiar with the sleek bun trend, but fall feels like it needs something more….undone. A messy bun is a timeless classic, making it perfect for either a red-carpet ready look or sweatpants and a crewneck. Whatever you decide to wear, a messy bun creates an effortlessly fashionable style choice, even on the days your hair doesn’t want to cooperate.
luxuous
We love a good bright orange pumpkin in the fall, but don’t want to look like one! Luxurious copper colors reign supreme in cooler months, with tones of caramel brown and auburn red to achieve that beautiful, warm copper color.
Many celebrities have recently been seen stepping out with a new copper color including Zendaya, Gigi Hadid, and Kendall Jenner. Though red hair looks fantastic on just about everyone, keep your skin tone in mind when booking your next trip to the salon. Peach and cinnamon for fair skin, cranberry and violets for deep skin, and copper for everyone!

Bailey Rae Hancock-Brown and her groom, Billy Jack Donald Brown, met in 2013 during a party when she was a Freshman at BCTC and he a Sophomore at UK. Their story could’ve ended there, but Bailey wasn’t going to let that be the final chapter. As she states “I stalked him until he asked me out!” Fast forward 7 years, Billy popped the question on a perfect Kentucky November day during The Breeders Cup in 2020. Unlike most young ladies, Bailey never dreamed of a large formal wedding. She and Billy wanted an intimate gathering with family and close friends in attendance, and more emphasis on the reception. Bailey’s parents were married in Las Vegas on 8-8-88 and she always loved the idea of a destination wedding. When she discovered 2-2-22 was a little over a year away, it was destiny!! They decided on a close family friend’s home in Summerlin, NV. located at TPC Country Club overlooking the golf course with the mountains framing the venue. They hired wedding planner, Tory L. Cooper to bring their vision of soft romantic lighting ( twinkle lights and various sized lanterns with flickering candle light), ivory Hydrangeas and Roses with accents of greenery (eucalyptus and ivy). Bailey can attest that an outdoor wedding can be a gamble. On the couple’s big day the forecast called for a 60 mph wind advisory. “We must have been living at the foot of the cross because at 4:00 p.m. the wind subsided and the sun came out for the 6:00 p.m. ceremony”. The elements aren’t the only risk involved in planning such an event. “Two days before the wedding, I received a call from one of my bridesmaids and my hairstylist for the wedding that she had tested positive for Covid”. Bailey’s advice “What’s going to happen is going to happen and at the end of the day, the wedding is just as perfect as you dreamed it would be”!
The couple decided on an “Old Hollywood Glam” theme with the bride wearing an ivory lace gown trimmed in ostrich feathers, Pave Crystal Bow Heels (Bailey’s suggestion “Don’t buy pricey bridal heels…they are rarely seen”) and for the “something blue tradition” an antique blue sapphire ring given to her from her parents. The groom wore an ivory dinner jacket with black tuxedo pants and bow tie with velvet smoking loafers. The entire wedding party wore black. From the iconic black and white checkered dance floor, round dinner tables covered in ivory velvet with coordinating velvet napkins, crystal candelabras, gold-etched bone china and crystal wine goblets, the whole evening was magical. A special highlight that stood out to the Bride and Groom was the moment Bailey’s childhood friends, Josie Rose Molasky and Tommy Ghirardini of Good Rzn sang “Unwritten”, a sentimental song between Bailey and her Bridesmaids as they entered the ceremony. Another moment they loved was their photographer moving around with a ring light attached to his camera that captured photos of the guests entering the wedding. These fun photos were developed onsite and placed in a 4x6 acrylic frame and given to the guests to take home as a “wedding favor”.
SUN BEHAVIORAL HEALTH
Brings a to Central Kentucky
SUN Behavioral Health, which operates a psychiatric hospital in Erlanger in partnership with St. Elizabeth Healthcare, opens an intensive outpatient facility in Lexington. The facility at 2335 Sterlington Road in Alumni Office Park opens at a time when research shows 746,000 adults in Kentucky have a mental illness and 40,000 Kentuckians ages 12-17 have depression (The National Alliance on Mental Illness).
SUN focuses on individualized, evidence-based treatment that considers the uniqueness of each patient. All programming at the facility – which includes cognitive behavioral therapy, coping skills training and a wellness recovery action plan – is conducted by licensed psychotherapists, nurses and ancillary therapists. The services are provided in a highly structured environment that helps patients learn and progress toward their mental health or substance use recovery goals.
The mission of SUN Behavioral Health is to partner with communities to solve the unmet needs of those who suffer from mental illness and substance use disorders. “SUN’s new Lexington facility offers an opportunity to access life-saving care and healing and is a ray of hope to those struggling with mental health and substance use in Central Kentucky,” says Toni Webb, MSW, LCSW, Director of Outpatient Services for SUN Behavioral Health in Lexington. “SUN Behavioral takes pride in offering services to a wide range of people regardless of age, treatment history, ethnicity, treatment needs, etc.”
Treatment at SUN’s intensive outpatient facility is individualized to meet the needs of the person seeking recovery - typical services include group and family therapy, stress management, and trauma-informed treatment. In the SUN Behavioral Day Hospital, patients may be at the facility for as many as five hours at a time, five days per week. “This type of outpatient treatment does not require a person to uproot their lives and live full-time at a facility - it offers the flexibility to attend to responsibilities like work, school, or family,” adds Webb.
SUN Behavioral Kentucky accepts many major healthcare providers, including Medicare and Medicaid. In addition to Kentucky, SUN Behavioral Health provides mental health and substance use recovery services in Ohio, Texas and Delaware. “We’re always looking for the next perfect wine or great vineyard. That prospect of making something really spectacular, discovering something new is what motivates me.”
Q: Tell us a little bit about how you became involved in the wine industry.
In 1974, my late husband Jess Jackson purchased an 80acre pear and walnut orchard in Northern California and replanted it to Chardonnay grapevines. Jess turned a slowdown in the grape market into an opportunity with his first wine – the 1982 Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay. The wine was hailed as a new hallmark style of California Chardonnay and won the first-ever Platinum Award for an American Chardonnay at The American Wine Competition. Kendall-Jackson was officially on the map.
In the early years, I continued my law practice while also working with my husband to grow our family wine business. He was having a great time making wines, so I retired from my practice in 1990 to join him full-time. From the start, we shared a vision to create extraordinary wine from the best vineyards. My background in real estate law served us well over the years as we acquired vineyards along California's coastal ridges to ensure longterm quality and growth for Kendall-Jackson as we built out our family wine business. Today, we're in our 40th year and celebrated our anniversary at the Grand Central Oyster Bar in New York City, where Jess sold his first case of Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay. It is an honor that our signature Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay has remained the number-one selling Chardonnay in America for 30 years.
Q: Why is it important to you to stay involved with your family's horse farm here in Lexington?
Our family's legacy in winemaking runs deep, and while wine enthusiasts know Kendall-Jackson as the producer of America's favorite Chardonnay and La Crema as one of the pioneering wineries in Russian River Valley, our family's endeavors in horse racing are lesser known. Jess's passion for horse racing was ignited as a young boy when he watched Seabiscuit win the 1938 Bay Meadows Handicap from atop his uncle's shoulders. Many years later, our success in the wine business afforded us the opportunity to indulge in his passion, which is now mine, for Thoroughbred racing. We opened Stonestreet Farm in 2005 on premium farmland in the famous Bluegrass region of Kentucky.
The guiding focus of Stonestreet is to breed and develop quality Thoroughbreds with strength, stamina and class. A band of over 100 broodmares with world-class pedigree and performance attributes is the foundation; continually improved with high-caliber retirees from the racing stable, as well as the purchase of top-class young performers and proven producers. Based in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky, our breeding division is housed across 1,800 acres of the best limestone-based grazing.
Our program values minimal human intervention and a good balance of proper nutrition, handling, exercise, and rest. Our business model includes welcoming retired fillies into the broodmare band and supporting our colts at stud. We are committed to providing the horses that do not enter the breeding operation every opportunity to succeed in a second career. Stonestreet retirees complete the New Vocations program while we remain financially accountable.
Q: In addition to wine, you're clearly passionate about giving back. Tell us about some of the organizations that are close to your heart.
Giving back to our communities where we live and do business is a core ethos in our culture. At Jackson Family Wines, we value partnerships and collaborations that share our commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility. Whether it is co-founding International Wineries for Climate Action or working alongside the Army Corps of Engineers, Fish and Game, and local Resource Conservation Districts to improve salmon habitat in local watersheds, we have a long history of leading through action and partnering with individuals and organizations that share our values. Each year, our company contributes thousands of hours of volunteer time, financial support, and in-kind donations to more than 200+ nonprofit organizations. In fact, our employees have volunteered nearly 6,000 hours to make a difference in our local communities over the past year, including the largest single-day volunteer effort to date for the winery this summer.
In addition, Kendall-Jackson launched the Grocery Worker's Appreciation Fund in partnership with United Way in September 2020 during Covid to say thank you to the grocery partners who've supported the winery for the past three decades. We pledged to raise $2 million dollars by 2030 with an annual awareness drive, and we're excited to continue the momentum.
Q: With such a busy life, how do you juggle your commitments while making time for yourself?
Overseeing our family's wineries and our horse racing and breeding endeavors keeps me busy. I'm fortunate my family is intricately involved in many aspects of our business and has always shared a passion for making world class wines and raising the best Thoroughbreds. We have a fantastic executive leadership team and strong, diverse leaders across all levels of the company that work hard to support our vision. While we are constantly looking for the next opportunity, when you love what you do, it never feels like work.
Q: What are some of your favorite spots in central Kentucky?
I always love spending time at Stonestreet Farm in Lexington. It's so beautiful and peaceful and provides a sanctuary for me when life gets hectic. When it comes to horse racing, Keeneland and Churchill Downs are my favorite race courses in Kentucky. One of my favorite things to do while I'm at my home in Kentucky is to watch the horses train at the tracks.
Q: What's your wine pick for this fall?
All our winemaking teams produce spectacular wines, so it's hard to choose favorites, but right now, I'm really enjoying the La Crema Saralee's Vineyard Chardonnay from our estate in the Russian River Valley, the Windracer Sealift Vineyard Pinot Noir from our cool climate vineyards out on the Sonoma Coast, and the Stonestreet Estate Cabernet Sauvignon from our mountain vineyards in Alexander Valley.
Q: Kendall-Jackson and La Crema wineries are sponsors of the Kentucky Derby. What can fans expect to see this year, and how can consumers get involved?
This will be an exciting year at the Kentucky Derby. Not only will wines be served at all Churchill Downs events, but we'll also have many events happening on-site and at our wineries. La Crema is hosting The La Crema Experience, a mobile pop-up tasting salon at Churchill Downs that's a not-to-be-missed destination, so if you're at the racetrack on Derby Day, please swing by. Back in Sonoma County, Kendall-Jackson is hosting a Kentucky Derby watch party at the winery, complete with betting and fashion contests throughout the day. The winery is launching co-branded Kendall-Jackson & Kentucky Derby commemorative wine bottles with limited edition collaborative artwork showcasing one of Stonestreet Farm's stars, Pauline's Pearl. For more information, tickets to the events, and to purchase wine bottles, visit www.kj.com and www.lacrema.com. •

Pu nHey ,
We're gladly welcoming pumpkin season. The king of fall produce, this fruit (yeah, science is weird) is incredibly nutrient-dense, packed with vitamins and minerals inside relatively few calories... until you add the pie crust, that is.
Their large size and wonderful flavor mean pumpkins are an easy way to incorporate seasonal produce into your meals this month. For soups, they can be used as a part of a chunky stew (we love adding it to chili) or blended up for the base. While we know and love sweeter baked goods featuring pumpkin (think pie, cookies and sweet breads), more savory applications are just as lovely; dinner rolls, quiches, cornbread, pasta and more! Pumpkin can be a tasty stand-in for potatoes, carrots, other squashes and more in your favorite dishes.
Here are some easy, accessible pumpkin recipes that will have you in the autumn spirit in no time!
S et Po-Pu nPie
ON PUMPKIN PURÉE:
Most of these recipes call for pumpkin purée. Generally, it’s safest to use canned pumpkin unless a recipe specifies that homemade is okay. Why?
For one, the moisture content of canned pumpkin is more controlled, ensuring a consistent result. While this will matter less for a soup, for instance, it’s absolutely crucial for breads, pies or other baked goods. Using homemade pumpkin purée generally results in a watery pie or breads that never set.
But an equally important factor is that canned pumpkin… isn’t exactly “pumpkin” as you think of it. Commercial canned pumpkin purée actually tends to include various winter squashes (including pumpkins!), which creates a depth of flavor that a single roasted pumpkin simply won’t provide. The signature blend of pumpkin and squash is what gives each brand its distinctive taste; there’s a reason everyone loves Libby’s, after all!
There’s a very important distinction between pumpkin purée and pumpkin pie filling. Pumpkin pie filling or mix includes spices, sugar, salt and more additional ingredients that will affect the final flavor of your dish; don’t buy this! True pumpkin purée will often be labeled as “100% pure pumpkin.”
If you’re dead-set on making your own pumpkin purée, plan that the resulting flavor will taste a little more vegetal and less sweet; you may want a recipe that compensates with extra sugar and spice. You will want to start with a sugar pumpkin (sometimes referred to as a pie pumpkin) and roast it. Add it to a blender to puree it. Place a large mesh strainer and cheesecloth over a bowl; add purée to strainer and press with a spoon to release water. Let sit for 1 hour to drain more. When packed into a cup and turned onto a plate, the purée should stand up, slumping slightly at the base.
Making a lot of pumpkin purée? Try a mixture of squashes to amp up the flavor! As the name suggests, sugar pumpkins bring more sweetness than some other varieties. Jarrahdale pumpkins are rich with a velvety texture that’s wonderful in a pie. Cinderella or Fairy Tale pumpkins have tough skins, but delicious flesh. If you can get your hands on a Dickinson variety pumpkin, you’ll be holding the secret to Libby’s famous flavor; Dickinsons make up most of their famous pumpkin purée! And don’t forget about other winter squashes, like acorn or butternut; the resulting texture will be smoother and the flavor sweeter.
Pumpkin pie is a staple of autumn dining. Sweet potato pie is a delicious southern tradition. It may seem like overkill to combine the two, but this recipe makes something that is truly greater than the sum of its parts. It’s more silky than traditional sweet potato pie, yet is sweeter and airier than your typical pumpkin pie.
INGREDIENTS:
15oz. pumpkin purée
1 c. mashed sweet potatoes (see note)
3/4 c. brown sugar
1 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground ginger
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
3 large eggs, beaten
1 1/4 c. heavy whipping cream
5oz. evaporated milk
1 T bourbon
Prepared 9” pie crust
INSTRUCTIONS:
Preheat oven to 400°F.
Mix together pumpkin, sweet potatoes, sugar and spices in a large bowl. Add the eggs, heavy cream, evaporated milk and bourbon, mixing until combined. Pour the mixture into the pie crust.
Bake for 40-45 minutes. The pie is done when a knife inserted into the center comes out clean or an instantread thermometer says 170°F. If you don’t want to mar the surface of your pie, give it a gentle nudge; the center should jiggle slightly, but not slosh.
Let cool completely on a wire rack. Refrigerate leftovers.
Note: we recommend roasting your sweet potatoes rather than boiling or steaming; they take on more of a roasted, caramel flavor profile.
Simply bake them whole, then scoop the filling out of the skin once cool enough to handle.
We also recommend pressing your mashed sweet potatoes through a fine mesh strainer to remove lumps and strings.
We love soup season!
This is a perfect recipe for those chilly days when you feel like spending a little time in a warm, cozy kitchen. The time it takes to roast the pumpkin and simmer can make it a challenge for weeknight cooking.
Instead, we recommend making this ahead of time, but leave out the heavy cream for the time being. Freeze or refrigerate the mixture, then add the cream after you’ve heated up the soup, just before serving.
INGREDIENTS:
4lb. pie pumpkin
3 T. olive oil (plus more for brushing)
1 yellow onion, chopped
4 medium cloves garlic, minced
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper
4 c. vegetable broth
2 T maple syrup
1/2 c. heavy cream
INSTRUCTIONS:
Preheat oven to 425°F. Halve the pumpkin and scoop out the seeds and strings. Rub or brush the flesh with olive oil and place flesh side down on a foil-lined baking sheet. Roast until the flesh is easily pierced with a fork, but not mushy (about 40 minutes). Set aside to cool slightly. Peel the pumpkin skin off the pumpkin and discard.
Heat 3T. olive oil in a large Dutch oven over medium heat until shimmering. Add onion, garlic and salt, cooking until onion is translucent.
Add the roasted pumpkin flesh and spices to Dutch oven. Pour in broth and use a wooden spoon to break up the pumpkin and mix the ingredients slightly. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. Stir in the heavy cream and maple syrup. Blend using an immersion blender (see note). Salt and pepper to taste.
Note: Feel free to use a stand mixer to blend. Allow to cool more before adding to your blender cup, and work in batches. Use caution to ensure you don’t burn yourself with escaping steam!
If you want to make this recipe vegan, simply swap the heavy cream for full-fat coconut milk.
Serving suggestion: drizzle rings of cream on top, then use a knife or toothpick to drag lines out from the center to create this spiderweb effect. If you don’t want a spooky look, try just a dollop of crème fraiche with some toasted pepitas.

Who doesn’t love cheesecake?
While making your own can be a bit of a chore, the result always proves well worth the effort. Just be sure to follow the instructions exactly; it’s tempting to skip the water bath or long cooling process, but that can result in uneven doneness or cracking. Trust the process!
INGREDIENTS:
For the crust:
2 c. cookie crumbs (see note)
6 T melted butter
1/4 c. granulated sugar
For the cheesecake:
4x 8oz. packages of cream cheese, softened
1 c. granulated sugar
1/4 c. brown sugar
3 large eggs
15oz. pumpkin purée
1/3 c. heavy cream
2 tsp. molasses
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. ground ginger
1/4 tsp. ground clove
1/4 tsp. allspice
INSTRUCTIONS:
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Line a 9” springform pan with foil, then lightly spray with cooking spray.
Combine the crust ingredients. Press into the bottom of the prepared pan. Bake for 5 minutes. Allow to cool completely on a wire rack.
Using an electric mixer, combine cream cheese and sugars until fluffy. Add in eggs, pumpkin and cream, mixing until fully combined. Finally, add in the molasses and spices, mixing until combined.
Spread batter in prepared crust. Place into a large baking pan that’s larger than your springform pan (at least 10”x10”). Pour boiling water into the larger pan so that the level reaches halfway up the side of the springform pan.
Bake for 1 hour. When given a nudge, the edges should be set yet the center should jiggle. Turn off the heat, crack the oven door and let rest for 1 hour in the oven as it cools.
Remove the cheesecake from the water bath and place on a cooling rack. Cool completely. Refrigerate overnight before serving.
Note: The cookies you choose for the crust have a big impact on the flavor profile of the final cheesecake. If this sounds like a lot of spice for your taste, graham crackers, vanilla sandwich cookies, pecan sandies or Nilla wafers are your best bet. If you want to amp up the autumn spice flavors, go with Speculoos cookies or ginger snaps.
Decorating with whipped cream, caramel, nuts and crumbled cookies can make this dessert a show-stopper!

Anyone who has ever done serious fall baking knows that you almost always have leftover canned pumpkin purée and/or evaporated milk hanging around. This is a great, easy recipe that can use up a little of both ingredients.
INGREDIENTS:
3/4 c. butter (plus more for greasing pan)
2 c. sugar
3/4 c. brown sugar
2/3 c. evaporated milk
1/2 c. pumpkin purée
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp. ground ginger
1 package white chocolate baking chips
7oz. marshmallow creme chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS:
Line a 13x9” pan with foil. Grease the foil and set aside.
Fudge
Cube the remaining butter. Add butter, sugar, evaporated milk, pumpkin and spices to a large saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Reduce heat and cook until it reaches soft ball stage (a candy thermometer will read 238°F).
Remove from heat. Add white chocolate and stir until the chips have melted. Stir in marshmallow creme until combined.
Pour into prepared greased pan. If desired, sprinkle with chopped pecans. Chill until firm.
Slice into squares. Store in refrigerator in an airtight container.
Note: if you want to include nuts, feel free to mix some directly into the batter before spreading. Some people prefer topping this fudge with toasted pepitas... or just leave them plain!

When you think of hearty autumn dining, a salad may not be the first thing that comes to mind. But the combination of roasted or grilled pumpkin and chickpeas is filling and delicious. It’s a great vegan meal on its own, or the delicious start to a fall feast.
INGREDIENTS:
Pumpkin or squash Olive oil
Drained, prepared chickpeas
1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper (optional)
1/8 tsp. smoked paprika
1/8 tsp. turmeric
Chopped red onion
Mixture of lettuce of your choice, torn into bite-sized pieces
Walnuts, chopped Dressing of your choice
INSTRUCTIONS:
Cube or slice your squash. Lightly coat flesh with olive oil. Roast or grill until it can be pierced with a fork, but not mushy. Set aside to cool slightly, then remove skins.
Toss chickpeas with paprika, turmeric and cayenne (if desired). Set aside.
In a large bowl, combine your choice of lettuce, chopped red onion and walnuts. Gently toss.
To serve, spread lettuce mixture on plate, then top with prepared chickpeas and roasted squash. Add dressing of your choice.
Note: obviously, this recipe allows for a lot of leeway. Your mixture of lettuce could include greens, cabbage, any variety of lettuce, spinach, chard, bok choy or kale. We think the pepperiness of arugula is welcome here while radiccio brings both color and a pleasant bitterness that balances the squash nicely.
As for your dressing? Mix a little pumpkin purée into some apple cider vinegar and shake together with Dijon mustard, maple syrup and olive oil for a delicious, autumnal vinaigrette. •

Widely
considered to be one of the greatest riders in Thoroughbred racing history, Isaac Burns Murphy was the first jockey inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.
On January 6, 1861, Murphy was born into slavery in Clark County, Kentucky. His mother was an enslaved person until becoming a refugee at Camp Nelson in 1864. His father, Jerry Burns, was a freedman who enlisted there with the 114th US Colored Troops regiment. James would go on to fight in some of the most decisive battles of 1865.
Following his father's death during the war, Murphy's mother took her son to live with her father, Green Murphy, an auction crier in Lexington, Kentucky. The young man, then known as Isaac Burns, changed his last name to Murphy to honor his grandfather during his horse racing career.
In 1867, Murphy and his mother made a move that would forever impact the young man's life. Murphy's mother was hired to work at Lexington racing stable. "Uncle" Eli Jordan, a famous Black trainer, noticed Murphy's small stature and put him on one of the stable's best runners. Murphy had found his calling. He began his racing career at age fourteen.
During that time in American history, horse racing was built on the skill, talent and hard work of Black trainers, riders, stable hands and grooms. Black riders were the sports stars of the era. In fact, the inaugural winner of the Kentucky Derby was another Black Lexingtonian: Oliver Lewis, who rode Aristides.
Isaac Burns Murphy would go on to become one of the highest-paid athletes of the time. He would ride in eleven Kentucky Derbies, winning three – the first jockey to do so; in 1884 aboard Buchannan, 1890 on Riley and 1891 with Kingman. Kingman was the first horse co-owned by an African-American to win the Kentucky Derby. To this day, Murphy remains the only jockey to have won the Derby, the Oaks and the Clark Handicap in the same year. He won four of the first five American Derby races, which was the richest race of that time.
His career was marked with incredible wins and unbelievable stats. During his peak, he was said to earn up to $20,000 a year at a time when the average yearly income for a family of four was just $1,200.
The most famous race of Murphy's career was in June 1890 aboard Salvator. As the most-famous Black jockey of the time, he rode in a dead-heat against his rival jockey, Edward Garrison, considered the most famous white jockey of the day. So close was the race that the outcome had to be determined by a photograph taken by John C. Hemment –the first instance of a "photo finish." His frequent tight wins were known as "Murphinishes."
But aside from his incredible talent as a rider, Murphy was known by friends and colleagues for his honesty and loyalty. Gamblers tried to entice him to throw the 1879 Kenner Stakes, but Murphy refused to let champion Falsetto lose.
By his own estimation, Murphy won 628 of his 1,412 starts. That 44% victory rate has never been matched. (Incomplete records put his win rate at 34.5%, still a number that has not been equaled in American horse racing.)
His career waned as racial discrimination lowered the number of Black riders. Rumors of alcoholism plagued Murphy when he fell off his horse in 1890, but the jockey maintained that health issues caused his dizziness. He won his last race in 1895 on an 8 - 1 horse. Off-season weight gain ended his career, but continual efforts to lose the weight may have contributed to his death. Murphy died in 1896 at the age of 36, likely of heart failure following a bout of pneumonia. While over 500 people attended his funeral, his unmarked grave in Lexington's African Cemetery No. 2 went forgotten until the 1960s. Frank B. Borries, Jr. spent three years identifying the jockey's gravesite. In 1967, Murphy was moved to the old Man o' War burial site. He was again reinterred when the Kentucky Horse Park was built, placing him next to Man o' War at the park entrance. The Kentucky Horse Park placed a newly engraved headstone for the champion rider in 2015 and told his story through a handful of interpretive panels.
Murphy's incredible accomplishments – along with those of his fellow Black jockeys – were largely ignored until the civil rights movement in the United States. Now, his legacy is celebrated and honored. The National Turf Writers and Broadcasters give the Isaac Murphy Award to the jockey with the highest winning percentage each year.

O rLew
was born in Fayette County in 1856. Very little is known about Lewis, aside from the fact that he was born free to parents Goodson and Eleanor Lewis – in fact, more is known about the life of the most famous horse he rode, Aristides.
li Le is
The first Kentucky Derby was held on May 17, 1875 at what was then known as the Louisville Jockey Club – which would later become Churchill Downs. Some 10,000 spectators came out to see the race.
Lewis was just 19 then, sitting atop a chestnut Thoroughbred colt, one of two entered by owner and breeder H. Price McGrath. Trained by former slave Ansel Williamson, the colt was supposed to be "the rabbit" – breaking ahead early to set the pace and allow the owner's other horse, Chesapeake, to come from behind and win.
As planned, Aristides broke in front and was overtaken
:
at the end of the first quarter. Unexpectedly, however, he fought to take back the lead, creating such a distance that Chesapeake had no hope of catching up. Lewis knew he wasn't supposed to win and looked to McGrath – who gladly waved him on from the homestretch. Two horses challenged horse and rider, but Aristides and Lewis won by a stretch. His time for the (then) mile and a half long course was 2.37.75, an American record for that distance.
Lewis would go on to place second in the Belmont Stakes aboard Aristides. He also won three races at the Louisville Jockey Club that year. Despite what would become a legendary success, Lewis's jockey career was short-lived. He eventually became a bookmaker and developed detailed handicapping charts and form sheets. He died in 1924 and was buried in Lexington's African Cemetery No. 2.
Today, we recognize what a historic ride that first Kentucky Derby was. Lexingtonians celebrate this jockey's life as they travel along Oliver Lewis Way.

Born in 1926, "Rudy" Carter grew up in Maddoxtown, a small African-American community in Lexington. Most of the men living in the area either farmed or worked on Lexington horse farms. Carter grew up dreaming of being a jockey. During his long school bus rides to the segregated Douglass School, he saw men training horses from the window. He would pretend to mimic their work, practicing his horsemanship on his mother's kitchen chairs.
At 15, he decided to leave school to work with horses; he became an exercise rider at Elsmeade Farm. He broke yearlings for Cy White, who called him a natural horseman.
Carter had the honor of watching legendary groomsman (and the Carters' neighbor) Will Harbut handle Man o' War at Faraway Farm. The high-strung, aging horse needed expert care, and Harbut spoke to the champion as he would a person. Harbut allowed Carter to sit astride the horse, making him the last living person to do so: Man o' War lived just one month after Harbut passed away.
As a young man, Carter had a second reason to visit Harbut so often; he wanted to date the groomsman's daughter, Lillian. Carter served in the Navy during WWII and married her after coming home. They would be married for 56 years, raising nine children together.
Carter's long-standing dream of being a jockey had been on hold due to Jim Crow laws; many states refused to license Black jockeys. In 1967, Doug Davis with High Hope Farm asked Carter to ride Royal Matter in the second running of the High Hope Steeplechase. With his family forced to stand outside the track because of segregation, Carter won his only race.
Carter's incredible career took him to many race courses and farms. In addition to working with Doug Davis, he worked with Andy Shetland at Belmont, Bruce Hundley at Saxony Farm, Keeneland and more.
Carter worked at Saxony Farm for 25 years, retiring in 2002. Upon his wife's death, he started working at the Kentucky Horse Park's Hall of Champions, working with retired racehorses. For fourteen years, "Gene" was a staple of the park experience. He passed away at 93, leaving behind an incredible legacy and a lifetime of treasured memories. •

Celebrating
Peeples
This month, the E t anquet ill h st s lute t . . e les h ri his fifty ye s f le shi an s i e t u ity.
by Donna Ison | photo by John BuckmanFor over 50 years, under the steady guidance of P.G. Peeples, the Urban League of Lexington-Fayette County has been improving the lives of Black citizens and underserved communities through addressing education, economic inequality, and housing.
During this time, the League has implemented several ongoing education programs, such as their Academic Challenge, which provides college scholarships, M.A.D.E. (Motivated All Day Everyday), which is dedicated to gang violence prevention, and Adopt-ASchool. In addition, they have offered career training, starting in the late sixties with their initial clerk-typist program. Since, they’ve opened several community technology centers, offered construction classes for exoffenders, and taught trade skills to women who wanted a non-traditional path.
But, of course, the League’s biggest impact has been in providing affordable housing to Fayette County families. To date, they are responsible for building or renovating 260 homes/apartments.
When asked, of these accomplishments, of which he was most proud, Peeples likened it to a parent trying to choose a favorite child. Though he could not pick a favorite, he could clearly state the singular philosophy that guided each and every one: “Always focus on the client—client first, community first.”
Even amongst these numerable triumphs, there have been projects that did not come to full fruition. Peeples sees the value in these as well. “I don't know anything that we've tried to do in this community that I regret that we tried. Because we always did it for the right reason. And I've always been driven by the saying, ‘Do the right thing for the right reason and right will prevail.’”
That mantra has guided Peeples since he began is career with the Urban League back in 1968. Having graduated from the University of Kentucky with two teaching certificates, he initially taught elementary education at Douglas Elementary and special education at Beaumont Junior High. Then, after meeting and volunteering for Walter Brown, the first executive director of the Urban League, Peeples was offered the role of education director. He said, “It was a blessing for me that that he [Brown] saw something in me and gave me an opportunity.”
Within two years, Peeples took on the role of executive director, where he has been thriving since. This month, at the annual Empowerment Banquet, he is being celebrated for his five decades of service and the multitude of accomplishments of the Urban League. He humbly credited his success to the others who have come before him. “When I step forward to receive an honor, I'm thinking about the people whose shoulders I stand on. I am thinking of the people who made the sacrifices before me to put me in a position to be receiving such honors.”
Peeples also recognizes his work is far from over and that, though Lexington has come along way in terms of accessible housing, there is still much room for improvement. “We still have lots of work to do. Affordable housing is critical. And it's going to takes a village…it's going to take the entire village. But what makes me feel
good is that people understand that it's an issue. People recognize it, and are willing to roll up the sleeves and get involved.” For those, ready to help, Peeples recommends volunteering for organizations, like Habitat for Humanity; becoming aware of and voting for housing initiatives; and being a good steward and taking pride in any property you already own.
He also stressed that providing affordable housing requires vision. “When you see a dilapidated unit, rather than frowning and turning away, see it as an opportunity. Think, ‘if we collaborate, we can get it fixed.’”
For other individuals who feel inspired to take part in community activism and government policy, he offered this advice: “Get involved. Develop relationships with organizations and with the people who run those organizations. Lexington is a caring, giving community. Show that you want to be involved and people will welcome you with open arms.” He added, “Be willing to listen, be willing to learn, and be willing to give back. And then you'll start to have those feelings of fulfillment that can only come from helping others.”
One of the ways Peeples feels compelled to give back is through sharing the knowledge he’s gained. He said, “I love sharing wisdom. I was given this wisdom to share, not to hold. And it is my responsibility to share and encourage those that I pass it on to share as well. If we would all do that, then what a wonderful world this could be.” •
If you would like to know more about P.G. Peeples and the Urban League of Lexington-Fayette County, a The First 50 Years commemorative book, chronicling the history of the organization, is now available for purchase, with proceeds going to fund upcoming programs and projects.

with Atmosphere Supply
Justin Byall is a second-generation owner of Atmosphere Supply, which is based in Nicholasville Kentucky. His father, David started the company in Kentucky in 1986 after launching several franchise models in the Western states finally settling his family in Lexington. Justin learned the business by working with him since he was 14. He believed strongly in mentorship from an early age to instill business sense, and work ethic. The company started as a franchise and evolved into its own brand in 2011. Under Justin’s leadership the company has now expanded and has two sister divisions. "My father is and always has been the greatest influence in my life," Justin says. "He taught me to spend time with people getting to know them on a personal level whenever possible. The business would then build naturally." David Byall passed nearly six years ago, but his mentorship lessons continue.
Atmosphere Supply is a Janitorial Supplies and Services company. Our core business is sourcing and delivering on-time commercial cleaning tools, supplies, specialty chemicals, floor cleaning equipment, PPE and paper products. Atmosphere’s trained cleaning crews are there to handle difficult cleaning challenges which most companies cannot do in-house. Our strength is knowledge and know-how. Sister companies include Hydrosphere Services which offers environmental exterior cleaning and Atmosphere Air Quality which offers air duct and dryer vent cleaning as well as odor fogging. Many of our clients are horse farm owners, or suppliers and service partners to the equine industry.
What makes each day enjoyable for me is that our clients always bring us new opportunities and challenges. Over the past 16 months we have spent much of our focus on the equine industry. This was inspired by some equine clients, because Rotovirus B had reared its ugly head during their 2020 foaling season. This novel virus caused havoc on foal mortality. We were also challenged by a prominent local equine veterinarian to see how we could help farms with implementing their biosecurity more effectively and efficiently. The challenge was accepted. The culmination of this work is the recent publication of a book titled “Biosecurity for the Equine Industry – A Practical Guide to Proper Implementation”. The book was not written from a veterinary perspective, but rather from a Janitorial/Sanitation perspective. Primarily educational, the book offers real world practical strategies and solutions – customizable for each farm, to enhance farm biosecurity. It is primarily focused on biosecurity for breeding farms, where keeping precious foals alive is vital for the farms’ success. The book is a tremendous guide for how to thoroughly clean, sanitize or disinfect all the different types of surfaces found on farms. There is a valuable section on which tools, equipment, chemicals, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) are best for each job. This is a very timely publication which we hope will be a valuable resource to everyone involved in the equine industry. Atmosphere Supply is now uniquely positioned to serve the Kentucky thoroughbred industry as a Biosecurity resource.
Janitorial Supplies
Atmosphere Supply’s mission is “building strong customer relationships through superior service”. My personal mantra in life is “every client should be a friend”. We are proud to have clients that have been with us over 30 years, without any contracts, because they trust us and appreciate that we do what we say we will, we do it well and we do it on time. We always stand behind our work to ensure each client is satisfied and happy. We have helped many horse farms over the last 18 months to revamp their Biosecurity. If you aren’t moving forward, you are going backwards. We are glad to offer new solutions.
"In my personal life I am most passionate about spending time with my two boys, before they leave home. We enjoy time boating at the lake and most recently playing pickleball together. My oldest runs cross-country at school and we love supporting his events. In his spare time, he also runs his own lawn care business so he’s got an entrepreneurial side that we love. I have been very fortunate in my life to make great business contacts through my own hobbies, especially as a scuba instructor for over 25 years. Many have become lifelong friends, including my lovely wife, Heather."
To someone considering starting a new business I would offer this advice. Most successful businesses are evaluated on their ability to connect on a personal level with their customers. It is important to love people, all people. It’s easy to find common ground with those that think and sound like you. When you meet those who don’t, make them feel appreciated and listen to their needs. Then you’ll have a long-term friend and customer. Any business should be about people, especially your associates. When your whole team is customer focused and rowing in the same direction, on the same boat, then you have a successful business model. Teamwork is always fun and rewarding.
"We wish great success to all the Breeders Cup Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Racefans coming to Lexington in November. God bless you and your horses" -Justin Byall
New Season New Opportunities to Win
Expectations for John Calipari’s basketball team are soaring after the way the Wildcats looked so dominant in four exhibition games in the Bahamas in August.
Kentucky looks like it has plenty of talented pieces for Calipari to use and even better they seem to fit together much better than any team he’s had since the 2019-20 team that featured Immanuel Quickley, Tyrese Maxey, Ashton Hagans and Nick Richards. That team seemed poised for postseason success before COVID stopped play.
A year later UK suffered through the infamous 9-16 season and then came the stunning loss to Saint Peter’s in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. But now the optimism is back and Kentucky is a top five team in most preseason prognostications.
Kentucky assistant coach Orlando Antigua won’t downplay the team’s talent or depth. However, he says a key this year is players accepting roles whatever they might be.
“Those other teams we have had that made the Final Four and had 30-win seasons, there were players who could have started and should have started but for what the team needed everybody had to sacrifice,” said Antigua. “Sometimes that means a different role than what you might think as a player. We want guys to be stars in their roles and to feel appreciated in their roles.”
On a team full of potential stars, junior Lance Ware may set the tone for role playing. He’s not UK’s most talented player or likely major contributor but rather than transfer, he came back knowing he would be behind unanimous national player of the year Oscar Tshiebwe.
“That speaks to his commitment to the program and how much he loves being in Lexington,” Antigua said. “He is someone that is not afraid of a challenge and will push Oscar and himself daily. He sees an opportunity to get better and get time on the court. Everybody has to run a different race and he is a guy who understands how hard it is here and can tell younger players what to expect.”
One player who definitely knows what to expect is Tshiebwe. He had historic numbers last season. He led the country in rebounds, offensive rebounding and defensive rebounding percentage. He set a school record with 28 double-doubles and averaged 17.4 points and 15.1 rebounds per game.
“There’s always room of improvement. We didn’t anticipate him having a 28-rebound game like he did but we did expect double-digit rebounds and we expect that again,” Antigua said. “We want to help him expand his game when it comes to passing, shooting range.”
Antigua admits everything is geared to putting Kentucky into the national championship chase and then hopefully finishing the chase in March. He even thinks last year’s NCAA loss can help this year much like it did for Virginia when the Cavaliers won the 2019 championship one year after becoming the first No. 1 seed ever to lose to a No. 16 seed in NCAA play.
“I think we potentially can use the same motivation. You want guys to remember that experience last year but not fester on that. It is a new year, new opportunity,” the Kentucky assistant coach said. “The returning guys can use that as fuel and constantly remind the younger guys how fragile it is when you get to NCAA Tournament play.”

Robin Anderson and Kathy Phillips launched Caring Costumes when they realized the amount of space and money their own Halloween costumes began taking up at home! Moreso, when they realized some children may not have the opportunity to get new costumes each year. “Costumes are so expensive, worn only one time, and another child could enjoy wearing it again…donating only makes sense!” said Phillips.
Thanks to our generous community, hundreds of costumes will be made available for browsing at two costume fairs this year!
October 17: William Wells Brown Community Center
October 19: Dunbar Community Center
“We have been blessed by the support and generosity of so many people,” said Phillips.
“To us, it’s the best way to celebrate Halloween!”
