“please leave.” how to politely say

As our earlier tale of two authors illustrates, sometimes, guests just don’t know when to leave. We all know the old adage attributed to founding father Ben Franklin; “Guests, like fish, begin to smell after three days.”

But how do you politely scoot your guests out of your house if they never make a move for the door? Remember that it’s most likely that they’re not trying to be a pain; they’re probably just having such a great time that they’ve lost track of time. (Even if you haven’t.)

Stay gracious, but remember that your peace of mind and the comfort of your household is what’s most important.

First, Be Proactive

When inviting someone to stay – or even if they invite themselves – set expectations up front. State clearly how long you’re willing to host them. If your guest doesn’t make clear how long their visit will be, suggest an end date.

Script: “We’d absolutely love to have you for the weekend! Maybe you could come Friday after six and leave at your leisure on Sunday?”

Or: “We’d be thrilled to have you visit. The only problem is that we have some plans we can’t cancel on the 20th. Would it be okay if you guys were to leave before that?”

Ask How They’re Getting Home

This is a perfectly acceptable conversation to have at any point in your guests’ stay, as it’s a natural expression of care. Whether you broach the subject after a couple glasses of wine at a dinner party or after three days of them sleeping on your couch, it’s a Miss Manners-approved way to get your guests thinking about finding the exits.

Script: “We’d be happy to take you to the airport – when is your flight out?”

Or: “Hey, I forgot to ask; how are you getting home? Do you need us to help you arrange something?”

Make Yourself the Scape Goat

Pretend you’re the one inconveniencing your guests. This little bit of reverse psychology allows you to express that the visit has been overlong without making your guest feel awkward. The important thing is to playact this scene in a flustered rush.

Script: “Oh my gosh, I didn’t realize I kept you a whole week! Oh, you must be wanting to get back to your life. I’m so sorry… here, let me help you pack.”

Or: “You have been so kind to let me monopolize so much of your month! Thank you. Can I schedule a Lyft to get you to the airport on time?”

Be Direct

For some people, subtle hints simply aren’t going to do the trick. It’s important to be compassionate and gracious, but at the end of the day, they’re testing the limits of your hospitality.

Script: “I have loved having you here. It’s been a wonderful week, but I have to get back to my regular routine tomorrow. If you’re not ready to leave town, I know this great B&B–”

Or: “I’m so glad you had such a great time staying here. We’ve loved having you, and we really look forward to your next visit. Unfortunately, we can only host you for one more night. If that doesn’t work with your travel plans, I’d be happy to help you find a great hotel!”

Be Even More Direct

If you’ve already directly communicated when you expect your guests to leave, reminded them of that deadline, offered to help them skedaddle and they still haven’t vacated the premises? Your obligation to spare their feelings has ended. While you should never be outright rude, you may need to be baldly honest.

If your guest has missed the none-too-subtle hints to this point, they may react as if this conversation is coming out of nowhere. Remind them that you’ve previously discussed their departure. More importantly? Remember that “no” is a complete sentence; you don’t owe them justifications as to why they can’t continue to take advantage of your good graces.

Script: “We talked about you leaving on Thursday and now it’s Sunday already. This visit has been great, but I’m afraid we need you to leave today. How can I help?”

Or: “This visit has been wonderful. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end: I can’t host you any longer.”

TOP tip:

If you don’t mind being a little passive-aggressive, many people strip their guest beds as a way to shoo anyone who overstays their welcome. We find that this is most effective on guests who are waffling about extending their stays; it’s like a silent “no thank you” to their plans. Guests who have made themselves right at home, on the other hand, may see a stripped bed will probably just ask you for fresh linens without a second thought.

The nightstand might be the most important piece of furniture in a guest bedroom. Stock it with little comforts that will make your guest’s stay more pleasant. Here are some easy ideas:

Books, especially ones you’d recommend to them

A table lamp, within easy reach

Water carafe

Fresh flowers (assuming they don’t suffer from allergies)

• A box of tissues

• A card with the wi-fi password

• Charging station or charger “bricks”

Now that we have the unpleasantness out of the way, let’s consider the fun stuff! Seeing to your guests’ comfort ahead of time can often reduce your hosting workload by half. Rather than continually running around, looking for items your guests request, why not anticipate their needs so that you can focus on other stuff?

Laundry and Luggage

• If you have a luggage rack, now is the time to drag it out of storage. If you don’t, show your guests where they can put their luggage that isn’t your fresh, clean duvet.

• Empty out as much storage space as you can part with in the guest room, and supply plenty of empty hangers. Door hooks may also be helpful in the guest bedroom and bathroom.

• Place an iron and/or steamer in the closet so guests can refresh their clothing and not feel rumpled during their stay.

• Show guests where the laundry room is, and leave a note with any pertinent instructions for using the machines.

Necessities

• Leave out a couple of extra blankets or throws, in case nights are a bit chilly for your guests.

• Leave a stack of fresh towels in the guest room or in the bathroom in clear view, so guests don’t have to go

hunting. This also signals that they’re free to use the shower without having to ask.

• Set out a basket with basic toiletries in the bathroom. From a brand new toothbrush to travel bottles of shaving cream, these amenities will help guests feel at home – and save you from running all over the house to supply their needs.

• Leave toilet paper, plungers and other toilet items in full view. While it may not look the nicest, it will save your guests a lot of embarrassment.

Comforts

• Set out a basket of single-serve snacks. While you may have said “help yourself” to your guests in regards to your food, most will be too timid to crack into your cabinets.

• Provide printed steps for your media devices, especially smart TVs. If you have a hot tub, pool, pool table or other source of entertainment for which you have specific instructions or rules, print those out and post them in the appropriate place.

• Create a list of “alone time” activities your guests can do without you, such as restaurants you’d recommend, attractions you think they’d enjoy or events you think they may wish to attend. Of course, we suggest leaving out for their perusal!

DON’T feel that you have to plan every single meal, outing and activity. Leave plenty of room for your guests to explore a little on their own.

For week-long stays, it’s reasonable for you to make breakfast once, then provide breakfast items – such as pastries, fruit and breakfast casseroles – for guests to eat at their leisure the rest of the week. While you will be in charge of dinner most nights, let guests figure out lunch on their own unless you’re all out and about together.

Likewise, it’s reasonable to plan a few key activities and offer up some fun suggestions, but it’s perfectly fine to expect guests to entertain themselves for some of the time.

DO relax. The entire point of spending time with loved ones is to have meaningful moments together. The food, the accommodations, the entertainment are all secondary to the time you spend with one another. So enjoy your guests!

DON’T worry about your guests’ impression of you. Easier said than done, right? But more likely than not, your guests won’t remember a dust bunny under the bed or that your Bluetooth speaker wasn’t working. And honestly, if they’re judging you for the state of your drapes… are they even worth impressing?

DON’T do so much to cater to their needs that you end up feeling neglected. You can share some of what you love, too.

DO make time for self-care. We know, the phrase “self-care” is basically a bad cliché by now. But it really is important to carve out time to take care of yourself! Take a long, luxurious bath while your guests are touring bourbon distilleries. Slip out from a busy dinner to take in a breath of fresh air on the patio. Schedule some time for you to get away from your guests and simply relax.

DO involve your guests in planning… or let them take over, if they want. Your guests may have a bucket list they want to check off while in town. Let them handle some of the burden of decision-making!

DO let guests pitch in. If a guest offers to help with clean-up, let them. If they offer to help and you know them doing so would only create more stress, suggest something else they could help you with.

DON’T be afraid to ask your guests a little bit about themselves before they arrive so you can customize the experience for them. Are they light sleepers? Would they prefer to sleep in (and how late)? Do they enjoy candles, or would they rather have fresh air? Are there any snacks they tend to crave?

DO schedule a housecleaning for the day your guests leave. Let someone come and handle the dirty work, so to speak. This will be an amazing treat to yourself. As a bonus? It’s a great excuse to help scoot guests out the door (“Sorry, we have the cleaners coming at one. Here’s your bag! Bye! See ya next time!”) •

5 Expert Tips When Planning an Event:

Budget - This is true with any event of any size. Creating your budget document in the beginning is crucial to a successful event. That way you don’t feel “pinched” as the event draws near, and you can identify what areas are most important and should get a bigger chunk of your budget. You should give heavier weight to things like venue (if applicable), food & beverage, entertainment, and decor.

Theme - Once you have the budget nailed down, the theme should be the next step. This really determines a lot of things, and the creativity involved is what gets me most excited! You can theme your menu, your decor, request for guests to dress in theme, and so much more! This can carry through from the moment you invite your guests (in whatever way that happens) through the last bite during your event.

Keep it Simple - When planning an event, you want to keep as much of it as simple as possible. That doesn’t mean that you don’t pay attention to the details - but every single detail can’t be the most intricate “thing”, it’s a recipe for disaster. Keep things simple... flawless execution goes a long way.

WOW Factor - If everything else is “keeping it simple”, we always encourage our clients to have one “wow factor” within the event. Whether it be a really nice invitation suite, unexpected entertainment, over-thetop decor, or an interactive tasting menu that is exquisite - think about your event and your guests, and pick one thing that gives your attendees that “wow” effect.

Trust Your Team - We always tell our clients to hire professionals, and trust them to do their job. If you hire the right people, they can take the heavy lifting off of your plate which makes the planning and execution process so much less stressful. I am a professional event planner and I put together elaborate parties for our son’s birthday. Each year, I hire a team of professionals to help bring our vision to life. I give them the theme parameters, a loose idea of what I am looking for, and a budget - and I let them make magic happen. And they do, every single time.

Entertain our guests, and their guests. Our clients get to show up, mingle and enjoy their event, and leave when it’s over. We do the rest.

Tip#1

Guest List and Invitations

Small and intimate? Big and grand? Making a guest list for your party ensures you don’t leave anyone out, or so you don’t go over capacity if your venue has a limit. Once you have your guest list all put together, along with venue, time, and date, we recommend sending out proper invitations.

Not only does an invitation help people remember they have an upcoming event, but it sets the tone for the party - casual or formal? Is there a theme? Color scheme? - It will also create a sense of excitement when your guests receive their invite in the mail! If you don’t have time to send invitations through the mail, virtual invites work as well, especially with applications such as Canva that make designing your own invitation easy

Tip#2

Pick a Theme

Having a themed party may sound childish, but ultimately, having a cohesive theme, or even just a color scheme, can make planning so much easier. From stationery to decor, your theme acts as the thread that ties the whole party together. Just make sure the birthday guy or gal actually likes the theme you choose, or that could put a damper on things.

Whether you go for a masquerade ball, the wild wild west, disco tech, 20s flapper girls, or a posh garden tea party, who doesn’t love to play dress up every once in a while?!

Make it an Experience

The more of an experience your party is, the more you and your guests are likely to remember it for years to come! If you want to go all out, some creative adult party ideas include a murder mystery dinner, a decades party, or a $2 prom where everyone wears something from thrift stores like Goodwill. Remember, you don’t have to go all out to create a memorable experience for your guests, though. Other entertainment ideas like interactive food and drink tables, fun games, photobooths, lively music, or even something as simple as a mimosa bar are sure to make a splash!

Can’t Forget Food

Everything about your party could be great, but if your guests’ bellies aren’t full, they probably won’t remember what a good time they had!

A buffet style setup is typically the easiest and most efficient way to serve food at a party, especially if you’re hosting at home and have limited space. Rather than running around getting everything ready the day of your party, hiring a caterer can take the stress off of you so you can focus on other important details. Make sure you have plenty of snacks for guests to nibble on throughout the party, and of course, can’t forget a tasty birthday cake!

Take Inventory Beforehand

Hosting a dinner party can feel like a long timeline of personal chaos. Once you’ve determined a date and the overall feel of the meal, take inventory of your serveware. Either use this as a guide to shop for missing pieces or to steer your menu planning according to what your dishes can bear.

Think About Flow

... both in terms of serving your guests (or letting them serve themselves) and the progression of the meal. Your serveware not only accommodates your dishes, but also your guests. You need ample space to either serve your guests from the dishes or for them to reach each item. If guests will approach the buffet from both sides, you’ll need two sets of utensils.

Remember Temperature

If dishes need to be kept hot, consider finding chafing dishes that can bring the heat. For warm dishes, get well-insulated serving dishes, and don’t forget the trivets! Consider placing cold dishes over a bed or bowl of ice.

Bring Out the Best

Use your antiques pieces! Polishing up your silver pieces will add so much character to the table. Bringing out the main dish on your mother’s serving platter will pile on the charm. Even vintage linens can offer a ton of style to simple serving dishes.

Mix & Match

Bringing varied materials into your serveware mix will elevate the overall look. Cast iron with marble, wood with ceramic, copper with stainless steel... these combos will make your whole spread seem so curated and cool.

Have Fun

Don’t forget that the entire point of your dinner is to enjoy time with your guests. While hosting naturally requires a little elbow grease, you shouldn’t let the desire for perfection dampen your enjoyment. Chances are, your guests won’t even notice the hiccups.

If you are serving anything buffet-style, here’s one of the best hosting tricks we have to offer: vary the heights of your serveware. Naturally, this allows guests to see everything you’re offering, even at a distance, encouraging them to sample each of your delicious goodies. But a less-obvious benefit? APPETIZERS:

air fryer blooming onion

ONION:

1 c. milk

1 large egg

1 c. flour

3/4 tsp. salt

3/4 tsp. cayenne pepper

1/2 tsp. paprika

1/4 tsp. black pepper

1/4 tsp. dried oregano

1/8 tsp. dried thyme

1/8 tsp. cumin

1 large sweet onion (about 1 lb.)

Preheat air fryer to 375°F.

Whisk together milk and egg in a bowl. In a separate bowl, mix together flour, salt, cayenne pepper, paprika, black pepper, oregano, thyme and cumin.

Slice 1” off the top of the onion, and remove a 1” diameter core, leaving the very bottom intact. Slide about 3/4 of the way down the onion, then turn keep slicing in this manner until you have 16 sections, being careful not to cut all the way through. Gently spread the sections apart. The onion should naturally “bloom” at this point.

Dip entire onion into milk mixture, then into flour mixture to coat. Separate the sections and sprinkle flour mixture into the crevices. Dip again into the milk mixture and again into flour mixture to coat once more.

Spritz entire onion with cooking spray. Arrange in the air fryer basket. Cook until crispy, about 20 minutes.

Note: To help keep the onion blooming, you can plunge the sliced onion into boiling water for 1 minute, then remove to a bowl of ice water. However, this step can be intimidating for home cooks, and it’s not necessary if you are careful.

DIPPING SAUCE:

1/2 c. mayonnaise

2 T creamy horseradish sauce

1 T ketchup

1/4 tsp. paprika

1/4 tsp. salt

1/8 tsp. dried oregano

1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper

Stir together ingredients and chill until onion is ready. Garnish sauce and onion with additional paprika. (adapted from AllRecipes)

no-knead focaccia

1 envelope active dry yeast

2 tsp. honey

2 1/2c. lukewarm water

5 c. all-purpose flour

1 T kosher salt

6 T extra virgin olive oil, divided

Whisk together the yeast, honey and water. Let sit five minutes until foamy or creamy. Add flour and salt. Mix with a rubber spatula until a shaggy dough forms. Pour 4 T olive oil into a big bowl. Transfer dough to bowl and gently turn to coat in oil. Cover with plastic wrap and rest at room temperature until doubled in size, around 3-4 hours.

Generously butter an 18x13” rimmed baking sheet. Pour 1 T olive oil in the center of the can.

Using a fork in each hand, gently gather up the edges of the dough furthest from you; lift up and over into the center of the bowl. Give the bowl a quarter turn and repeat. Repeat this process twice more.

Transfer to prepared pan. Pour the oil left in the bowl and turn the dough to coat in oil.

Set pan in dry, warm spot. Let dough rise until doubled in size. (Rate of rising will depend on the spot you place it; this will take anywhere from 1 1/2 hours to 4. When poked with your finger, it should spring back slowly, leaving a visible indent. If it springs back quickly, it’s not ready.)

Preheat oven to 450°F.

Lightly oil your hands. Gently stretch the dough out to fill the pan. Use your fingers to dimple the focaccia. (Poke until you feel the bottom of the pan.) Drizzle remaining 1 T olive oil over bread, then sprinkle with flaky sea salt. Bake 20-30 minutes, until puffed and golden brown all over. Cut into desired slices. (adapted from Epicurious)

Notes: If desired, sprinkle the top with rosemary needles prior to baking. Or, once baked, brush it with melted butter and sautéed garlic. This focaccia is perfect for various dips and toppings. Your guests will be wowed that you made your own!

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 1/2 T fresh lemon juice

1 T fresh chives, chopped

1 T fresh parsley, chopped

Melt butter over medium heat in a saucepan. Turn heat to low and add garlic; cook until fragrant. Remove from heat. Add lemon juice and herbs. Stir to combine.

Keep warm until ready to serve. (adapted from The Suburban Soapbox)

1 pkg. frozen puff pastry sheets, partially thawed

1/2 c. mayonnaise

2 tsp. kosher salt

1 tsp. black pepper

10 oz. sharp Cheddar, shredded

11 oz. cherry tomatoes, halved

2 T fresh basil, torn

Preheat oven to 400°F.

Gently unfold two sheets of pastry. Spread half the mayo on each, then sprinkle each with half the salt and pepper.

Cut into 3” squares (you’ll get 9 per sheet). Gently press into lightly greased muffin pans. Divide the cheese and tomatoes among the tarts, generally filling each about 3/4 of the way. Bake until pastry is golden brown, about 20 minutes. Let cool 5 minutes before serving. Top with torn fresh basil. (adapted from Southern Living)

Note: Using multi-colored cherry tomatoes will result in a more eye-catching tart.

2 slices bacon

1 c. onion, chopped

1/4 tsp. black pepper

1/2 c. bleu cheese, crumbled

1/2 tsp. fresh thyme, chopped

1/2 3lb. package frozen white roll dough, thawed

1 T butter, melted

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Line a 5x9” loaf pan with parchment paper.

Cook bacon until crisp. Transfer to a paper towel lined plate and reserve 1 T drippings in skillet. Cook onion in the bacon drippings, stirring occasionally, over medium-low heat until tender. Uncover and continue cooking until golden, about 3 minutes. Add pepper and let cool.

Crumble bacon. Add it to skillet, along with bleu cheese and thyme, and stir to combine.

Using scissors, gently snip each roll into quarters, being careful not to deflate dough. Arrange a third of the dough balls in the pan; top with a third of the onion mixture. Repeat twice more. Drizzle with melted butter.

Bake until golden, about 45 minutes. Cool in pan for 5 minutes, then lift from pan. Serve warm. (adapted from AllRecipes) •

On any given day, there are multiple art exhibits and installations up for you to view. And if you think you’ve already “been there, done that,” think again; many galleries have rotating exhibits to ensure there’s always something you haven’t seen. From the Lexington Public Library to the Headley Whitney Museum, there is always something beautiful to take in and enjoy. Don’t forget that viewing public art, such as murals, sculptures and street performances is a free way to enjoy your life in Lex while still encouraging local artists.

The simplest, most effective way to support local artists? Buy their art or commission their work! Hire a local artist to paint a mural in your home, purchase gifts made by a local artisan, shop for your wall art from local galleries or commission a musician to write a custom piece of music for your wedding (or a friend’s!) Plus... who doesn’t want the chance to call themselves an actual “patron of the arts?”

Make a Donation

You have a few (generally, taxdeductible) options when it comes to giving to arts nonprofits and organizations. You can choose to give directly to these groups, ensuring your money goes towards a cause you’re passionate about. Butternut Squash

The sweet, creamy flavor of this squash is a fall staple. Breaking it down can be difficult due to its tough skin, but the results are always tasty. Wonderful for soups, mashes, roasts and more.

Acorn Squash

Obviously, this cutie is shaped like an acorn. This green squash is a lovely yellow-orange inside. The skin becomes tender when roasted. Works great in both sweet and savory dishes.

Spaghetti Squash

As the name suggests, once roasted, the flesh of this squash pulls apart into strings. You can use this as a carb-free spaghetti alternative or employ this squash in a veggie hash.

Pie/Sugar Pumpkin

These small, orange pumpkins can be roasted whole or pureed for pies, breads, muffins and more. Of course, these little pumpkins obviously work as jack o’lanterns, as well!

Delicata Squash

Roasted, this squash becomes sweet and creamy... and unlike other varieties the striped skin is then thin and edible! It’s perfect for both sweet and savory dishes and becoming a kitchen fave.

Chayote

Did you know this bumpy little green veggie is a squash? It can be eaten raw, pickled, sautéed, fried or cooked. It’s sometimes seen in Latin, Caribbean and Asian cuisine.

Kabocha Pumpkin

Whether green or red, “Japanese squash” is perfect for steaming, stuffing, roasting or pureeing. Its sweet, velvety and tastes a bit like sweet potatoes. Many people love them as table décor.

Hubbard Squash

This large, lumpy squash can appear orange, green or even slightly grey. It’s sweet when roasted like other orange-fleshed winter varieties. The shape and size may be a challenge.

Sweet Dumpling Squash

Creamy yellow skin with stripes make this small variety very, very cute. Roast these little guys whole for a starchy, smooth taste that’s reminiscent of corn. Also wonderfully decorative!

Butternut Squash Risotto

•4 c. butternut squash, peeled and cubed

•6 oz. thick-cut bacon, chopped

•2 T butter

•1 T olive oil

•1/2 c. shallot, finely chopped

•1 c. Arborio rice

•1/4 c. dry white wine

•4 c. chicken broth

•1/2 tsp. fresh thyme, chopped

•4 c. kale, chopped

•1/2 c. Parmesan cheese

Position one oven rack in the center and another below it. Preheat oven to 400°F. Arrange squash in one layer on rimmed baking sheet. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Scatter bacon over squash.

Add butter and oil to a large Dutch oven over medium heat; add shallot. Cook until translucent, about 3 minutes. Stir in rice and cook until it begins to crackle. Add wine. Let bubble for 30 seconds, then turn off heat. Add chicken stock, thyme and salt, to taste.

Place sheet pan on lower rack in oven. Set Dutch oven on middle rack. Bake sheet pan for 30 minutes, or until bacon is crisp and fat is rendered. Bake Dutch oven about the same amount of time, until rice is tender and only a bit of liquid remains unabsorbed at the bottom. Remove from oven.

Use a slotted spoon to transfer squash and bacon into Dutch oven, draining excess fat. Add kale and cheese, stirring until kale is wilted. (adapted from Family Style Food)

Note: If you prefer to roast the squash before cubing, simply pan-fry bacon separately and add both at end.

Stuffed Delicata Squash

•3 delicata squash, sliced lengthwise and seeds removed

•1 T maple syrup

•2 tsp. thyme

Stuffing:

•1 c. dried quinoa, rinsed

•1 3/4 c. water

•1/2 c. dried cranberries

•1/2 c. pistachios

•1 shallot, diced

•1 15oz. chickpeas, drained and rinsed

Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Lightly brush the delicata halves with maple syrup. Sprinkle with a bit of salt and pepper. Place on baking sheet cut side up. Bake for 30-45 minutes, or until tender. Meanwhile, in a medium pot, add quinoa and water. Bring to a boil, cover and reduce heat to low. Simmer for 15 minutes.

Remove lid, fluff with a fork and let sit 10 minutes. Add cranberries, pistachios, shallot and chickpeas; season to taste. Toss well to combine.

Scoop quinoa mixture into squash halves. Return to oven for 10 minutes, then serve. (adapted from Simple Veganista)

Note: If you want a little more flavor in your stuffing, cooked, crumbled bacon or sausage would be a welcome addition.

Cider Baked Squash

•2 medium acorn squash, cut into 1” slices, seeds removed

•1/2 c. apple cider

•1/4 c. packed brown sugar

•1/2 tsp. salt

•1/8 tsp. cinnamon

•1/8 tsp. mace or nutmeg

Preheat oven to 325°F. Arrange slices of squash in a 15x10” baking dish. Pour cider over squash. Whisk together brown sugar, salt, cinnamon and mace; sprinkle mixture over squash.

Cover with foil. Bake until squash is tender, about 40 minutes. (adapted from Taste of Home)

Top it off :

Top your risotto with seared scallops, sautéed mushrooms, shredded cooked chicken, smoked sausage or caramelized butternut squash cubes.

Mixing Pets and House Guests Petiquette:

Even if you have the most well-behaved pooch at home, they can turn into a bull in a china shop when guests arrive at your front door. Inviting people into your home can be stressful enough as is, especially around the holidays, and having an overly excited or stressed dog can cause extra unwanted havoc in your home.

If this situation sounds familiar, we can assure you, you’re not alone! Guests are a break in your dog’s normal day-today routine, so it’s understandable that inviting others to your home can receive an extreme response. If you’re tired of apologizing for your (usually) precious pup’s behavior, then it’s time to learn some tips and tricks that will have all your guests complimenting your cool, calm, and collected fido! Ideally, when someone enters your home, you want your pet to be calm so they don’t jump on a guest who doesn’t particularly like dogs, someone who is unsteady on their feet, or so chaos doesn’t immediately ensue. The best way to prevent these situations is to first give them the support to make good decisions. For example, if you know your dog likes to steal snacks off the kitchen counter, move items out of reach and make sure your pet isn’t left alone in the kitchen.

Remember that your home is also your pet’s home, so it’s important for them to have a space they can go to calm down when guests are around. Even if your guests love your pets, a good rule of thumb is “supervise or confine.” This means if you can’t fully supervise your pet, they should be confined to a comfortable spot where they can relax, and you can keep your piece of mind. Now this may sound like a punishment for your pet getting too excited, but really, this is a great opportunity to allow your dog to calm down. Give them a toy or two, a treat, and their bed, and they will be in dreamland soon after your guests arrive. If this trick doesn’t work at first, try taking your pup for a walk before sending them to their private relaxation area.

For that maximum distraction power, invest in a few toys that encourage soothing behavior like licking and chewing, or in my dog’s case, tiny little nibbles. These types of toys can help ease your pooch’s anxiety when you’re gone to work or guests are over, but can also promote mental stimulation and minimize separation anxiety.

Some toys we recommend are:

1. KONG Classic Dog Toy: can stuff with treats or fill with dog-safe peanut butter for longtime focus; also dishwasher safe!

2. Paw5 Wooly Snuffle Mat: keep your pup busy and work their brain while they sniff out treats or kibble from the fabric folds

3. SmartPetLove Snuggle Puppy: Heartbeat toys combine warmth, softness, and a rhythmic pulse to give your pet the perfect cuddling companion. Heavy chewers beware, as your dog may see it more as a chew toy than a calming mechanism!

We’ve all heard that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but this old adage isn’t necessarily true. Dogs are innately good learners, and when high-value treats are involved, we’re sure you’ll have your pet’s full attention. Practicing the sit command helps dogs with their self-control, so be sure to practice this command for multiple situations, and especially by entrances where your guests enter. Then, when your pup behaves as you want, praise and reward them with treats and lots of love! With so many different treat options, it’s hard to know what is considered “high-value.” Luckily, you probably already have several high-value treat options in your kitchen, such as chicken, hot dogs, and most importantly, cheese! Personally, my dog will do just about anything for some shredded cheese.

Some packaged treat options we recommend are:

Christian Appalachian Project Announces 2023 Champions of Appalachia

Christian Appalachian Project (CAP) has selected Rev. Dwayne Mills and the Callie D McGrath Foundation as its 2023 Champions of Appalachia. The annual award recognizes individuals and organizations that have had a positive, long-term impact on the lives of people in the region.

“The compassion of this year’s Champions of Appalachia has brought life-changing services to people in need in the region,” said Guy Adams, CAP president/CEO. “We are honored to recognize their service to Appalachia.”

Mills, a native of Martin County, serves as the executive director of Appalachia Reach Out (ARO). The nonprofit that has served people in the region since 1972 through three main areas: education, addiction and recovery, and work and witness, or volunteer groups who serve on short-term mission projects. Mills, along with another partner, co-coordinated and led more than 55 teams to provide over 14,000 hours of direct service to families in Perry County who needed home repairs after last summer’s devastating floods. ARO also serves 120 families monthly at its food pantry and operates a thrift store.

For 21 years, the generosity of the Callie D McGrath Foundation has supported CAP’s mission of building hope, transforming lives, and sharing Christ’s love through service in Appalachia. Because of the foundation, CAP has continued to offer self-help human services programs to meet the basic needs of children, their families, and seniors in the region.

“It’s not a goodbye; it’s a see ya later.”

Michael E. “Mike” Cyrus

led many lives in one lifetime. He is a former racecar driver. He retired from Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky in Georgetown. He started a business and studio. He was a husband and father. He was an active member of his community. And somewhere along the way, he chose to pursue his passion for photography.

Mike photographed weddings, portraits, sporting events and more for numerous clients, ranging from families and friends to professional sports teams. His work was featured in magazines, on television and beyond. From capturing Kentucky Derby winners to joyful high school seniors, Mike’s camera was always pointed at something incredible. He even offered photography classes to invite others to discover the joy of photography.

But technical know-how and stunning subjects can only take a photographer so far. What made Mike’s work so dynamic, so impactful, wasn’t just his fantastic eye for composition, nor his determination to get the shot –more on that later. It was his ability to engage with the people in front of his lens. He wasn’t just friendly; by the end of a shoot, you were friends.

While Mike’s photographs are stunning, his true legacy is his wife and partner of 24 years, Misty, and their daughters, Rachel, Allison and Hannah. He always expressed such gratitude to get to spend more time with them.

Truly, Mike knew he was living his dream. So when he was diagnosed with stomach cancer, the man with one speed – go, go, go – knew that it would be a challenge, but one he would face with a smile on his face. His grace, optimism,

gratitude and unfailing sense of humor throughout his cancer journey was an incredible testimony to his faith and character.

We decided to feature one of Mike’s photographs on the cover of this issue in tribute to his memory; he often photographed the weekend races and crowds out at Keeneland for TOPS. He also shot the Kentucky Derby for us every year he was able.

And so we’ll share a story about Mike’s dedication to his craft. At the time of this year’s Derby, he was undergoing another round of chemotherapy. He had been too ill to attend a couple of events he had wanted to photograph leading up to the Derby, but he was bound and determined to make it to the track. He was in the thick of it for the whole day, crawling in the mud, stretching, leaning, climbing to get once-in-a-lifetime shots.

With his classic mix of humor and humility, Mike shared the story of this day on his Facebook page (apologies for any TMI):

“I may have puked more than once on the track in front of 10,000 people. It’s obviously a huge understatement to say that a breast cancer diagnosis comes with a whole host of worries. But many of those worries are difficult to understand for those who have not faced a cancer journey.

That’s where My Pink Navigator comes in. From care packages to lodging and transportation services, this local nonprofit organization understands the many kinds of support that a breast cancer patient will need along the way.

Newly diagnosed patients can be paired with breast cancer survivor mentors. These survivors offer guidance and support through what can be a scary and confusing time. Because they’ve “been there,” this connection can be an invaluable resource for patients.

“When you are having to make these life-altering choices, with no true understanding of how you will physically/emotionally handle your life-long decision, finding someone who has been

through this path helps you understand that you are not alone,” explained survivor Kristen, who turned to My Pink Navigator for support.

Survivor Kelley added, “We all have our own diagnosis and own journey but having someone to talk to, and who understands, is nice. Everyone at My Pink Navigator knows and cares.”

My Pink Navigator’s mission is rooted in that deep, firstperson understanding of the difficulties breast cancer patients face. Founder Bobbie Niehaus doesn’t have to imagine this difficult journey; she lived it. “From day one of my diagnosis, I was constantly thinking of ways to get involved to spread awareness and educate others,” she said. “Having a nonprofit and being able to serve others in their fight with breast cancer has been my passion, and I am so happy that I can make a greater impact in

someone’s life. To make their fight easier and comfortable means the world to me.”

My Pink Navigator’s newest resource is a guide and planner. Patients can carry this planner with them to doctor visits, treatments and tests, helping the patient stay organized, educated and informed about their diagnosis. This simple tool can lift the veil of confusion that often surrounds the endless numbers and terms that get thrown around during these appointments. This is just one more way that My Pink Navigator empowers patients.

How Lexington Ice Sculptures is changing the game

From watching his dad

create masterpieces out of ice to creating icy masterpieces of his own, Matthew Stoddart has been hooked on ice sculpting since he entered his first competition at age 13. Almost 15 years later, Matthew is now the Lead Ice Artist at Lexington Ice Sculptures, where he and his team create anything and everything you can imagine out of ice!

“Our company, Lexington Ice Sculptures, started with my father who has over 25 years of experience in ice sculpting,” explains Matthew. “Each block is a blank canvas that I transform into unique sculptures that can also be functional and interactive, leaving lifelong memories for any event.”

Matthew adds, “With the constant growth of technology and tools, our state of the art ice sculpting business has evolved into what it is today, with more innovation on the horizon!”

Before there was Lexington Ice Sculptures, Matthew’s parents, Kellie and Michael Stoddart, took their passions for food and hospitality to a new level, opening Seasons Catering. Now in its 27th year, and with the added ice aspect, Seasons Catering encompasses a one stop shop for any and all events.

“My parents built both of their companies from the ground up and have been in the food and hospitality world longer than I’ve been alive,” laughs Matthew. “They are by far the hardest working individuals I know and it shows with all they’ve accomplished in the past 27 years. Even before I got my hands on a chainsaw, I would see my dad practicing for competitions and it was so fascinating to me. As I got older, he started taking me to these ice sculpting competitions to be his assistant, and when I was 13, my dad entered me in my very first ice sculpting competition. I ended up placing second and I’ve been hooked ever since!”

Within the past 5 years, Matthew has expanded Lexington Ice Sculptures beyond just ice. He has also begun sculpting fruit, cheese, vegetables and pumpkins. So, if you’re planning your next tailgate, spooky Halloween party, or autumn get together, Matthew can help you bring your perfect vision to life!

“At Lexington Ice Sculptures, we provide the best quality ice to our clients,” Matthew explained. “Whether it’s a 2x2” cocktail cube or a massive ice bar, we have a very strict standard of what any product should look like before it leaves our freezers, so we can ensure lifelong memories for every client.”

Matthew recently had the pleasure of creating two ice sculptures for the Queen B herself, Beyoncé. The performer took the stage at Louisville’s L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium this July with her Renaissance world tour. Matthew created her iconic bee, as well as a crowned B monogram to celebrate the singer. This isn’t his first brush with fame, of course. He and his sculptures have appeared on television, been featured at festivals and brought the magic to countless events. From frozen shot glasses to showstopping ice thrones, he’s done it all. As Matthew likes to point out, ice sculptures aren’t “just swans” anymore – though he can certainly make one, if that’s what you’re after. Pretty cool, huh? •

on the back burner for a while, but when I found my faith again in April 2022 it changed everything” smiles Matthew. “Within three months of having Jesus in my day to day life, I made the best decision of my life and had a close friend baptize me in an ice bath!”

Matthew gives thanks to his friends and family who have been an immense support system over the last few (crazy) years, saying that being able to spend quality time with his friends and family is what makes life worth living.

It may not be easy work moving 300 pound blocks of ice, working in an 18 degree freezer, and getting snow in places you didn’t know could go, but Matthew will never tire of sharing his passion. Matthew encourages everyone to work to live – not live to work – keep an open mind, smile, laugh and be willing to help others daily. As he says, “Like ice sculptures, we’re only here in this world for a short time; live it to the fullest!”

Calipari’s New Team

Kentucky basketball has had its share of offseason drama but coach John Calipari has put together a team he really “likes” and one that many national basketball analysts now believe could possibly be in the mix for the national championship in March.

Kentucky has not been to the Final Four since 2015 and has not won a national title since 2012. However, Calipari has the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class and UK assistant coach Orlando Antigua said the coaches were “pleasantly surprised” by the overall unselfish play of the team during its four exhibition wins in Canada against international competition. So what does Antigua think about this year’s personnel? Here are some observations he offered on various players as UK prepares to open the season Nov. 6 against New Mexico State.

— Freshman center Aaron Bradshaw missed not only the games in Canada but summer workouts after needing foot surgery because of an ankle injury suffered in the McDonald’s All-American Game. “Aaron brings a very unique skill set. He can shoot the 3, handle the ball and pass. He just happens to be 7-1 and he can be a rim protector but he’s also very unique offensively.”

— Freshman wing Justin Edwards is described as a “basketball player you want on your team” by the UK assistant coach. “What position is his best? That’s a good question because he’s a Swiss Army knife that can be used in a lot of different positions. You can use him in ball screens, post him some, let him attack smaller defenders and he’s great at grabbing a rebound and leading the break. He is a luxury to have and is an incredible competitor and winner.”

— Senior guard Antonio Reeves is UK’s leading returning scorer and was the team’s best offensive player the second half of last season. “He is a guy that is well liked by other players. His personality is kind of quiet off the court but he is funny with teammates. He is a ‘gatherer’ for the young guys and that’s important. He is being more vocal. He has experience. He’s a year old. We all know he can shoot and make shots, so he’s very important on and off the court.”

— West Virginia transfer Tre Mitchell was impressive in Canada with his 3-point shooting and ability to put the ball on the floor. “I knew the trials and tribulations he had gone through but he has always been a kid who has been mature and very unselfish even in his prep school and high school days. He has some physicality to him. He was a low post physical guy who could score, use both hands, hit open shots but he lost a lot of weight. Now he’s put some of that weight back on and is more physical again.”

— Freshman Reed Sheppard is a legacy recruit well known to UK fans but he still made a big impression with his summer play in Canada. “He just plays basketball and loves playing. We know him because of his dad and mom but it was important for him to show his own merits warranted him being here. His defensive instincts and feet are great. He is shooting more consistently and confidently and that’s a huge plus for us. He’s a great passer and we saw in Canada that his defense can be outstanding, too.”

— Freshman DJ Wagner is being counted on to be the star player to lead the Cats back to the promised land of the Final Four. “The words you use for him are competitor and winner. If the game requires him to score 30, he will. If the game requires him to have 15 assists, he’ll do that. If the game requires him to take charges, he will do that. He’s got to get more consistent with his shooting but he loves to get in the gym and work.”

— Sophomore Adou Thiero has the ability to be a “shutdown defender” that Kentucky could certainly use this season and has lacked in recent years. “We have to keep getting him to do it and get him committed to doing it. He can separate himself on this team and could be an elite defender at multiple positions. We want him to keep running and running and running. Skill-wise, he could be a point guard with his vision, passing ability and decision making even though he’s 6-7 now.”

— Freshman guard Rob Dillingham had a reputation as an erratic, emotional player when he arrived at UK but has fit in perfectly with his new teammates. “He has been a great teammate and he’s such an explosive player. He can play multiple positions and can really get inside and create for himself and others.”

Antigua thinks Calipari has the kind of players he can mold into a special team.

“One of the most unique things that is under-appreciated about Cal and his coaching style is that he adjusts to the talent level he has. He tries to put them in position to be the best version of themselves,” Antigua said. “Sometimes it takes longer but he tries to put everybody in position to have success. Not every coach thinks that way and can do that. That is the uniqueness of Cal. I know fans may not always understand or see that but it is an incredible ability to have.”

The Kentucky Book Festival is where every lover of literature can find a book to enjoy and shake the hand that wrote it. You can browse the author’s gallery and meet your favorite writer, go to a main stage event to hear authors discuss their books, attend a writer’s workshop, start your holiday shopping early or simply rediscover your love of reading!

A program of Kentucky Humanities, the Kentucky Book Festival is the largest book festival in the Commonwealth. It brings together a community of readers and writers with something for the entire family. Be one of the approximately 3,000 people expected to attend the free event, which will feature 150 authors, including more than 20 children’s authors.
