After immigrating to Canada 20 years ago, Vian initially hoped to enter the field of Psychology. Originally hoping to enter the field of medicine in order to help people with pain, Vian chose to venture into psychology hoping to assist people

emotionally. As many of us are aware, life is full of surprises and unexpected events.

Vian’s life took a different direction in her early twenties and she was unable to continue pursuing psychology. She began working in sales, customer service, banking and finance, an experience that would form the basic foundation for her future endeavours. Vian thrived in this field, however, her passion was lacking. It has been said that, “there will come a time when you believe everything is finished; that will be the beginning”. This quote could not be truer for Vian.

In 2008, Vian lost her father, her job and her 10 year marriage unravelled, all within 6 months. A single, unemployed mother with a one and a half year old daughter, Vian actively dealt with the twist and turns life handed to her. Too often, it is easier to give up rather than battle on through tough times. Many of us are guilty of trying to find our way around obstacles rather than through them since it is easy to get discouraged when things don’t go the way we want them to. When everything in Vian’s life changed, she decided to change with it. With the help of a government program that assisted mothers with small children, at 35, Vian returned to school taking a double program for Esthetics and Medical Esthetics. Graduating with honors in both programs, she was able to find a part time job at a reputable clinic, however, after one month she quickly realized that she had different dreams.

Opening her own business from home, Vian was eventually invited to move her business to a cosmetic surgery clinic. This provided an opportunity to build a client base and expand her knowledge. With no background in business management, trial and error was present through the learning process. Eventually, Vian adopted a formula to make a business grow, meeting many industry professionals and suppliers who would help her get where she is now.

After two years, Vian opened up her own independent business providing the services and treatments offered today. Vian states, “Our clinic’s philosophy is to build long term relationships with our clients and let those relationships build the business for us.” By promising and delivering top service, Dermedix is the result of Vian’s persistence and passion.

A model for many who either run or hope to run their own business, Vian recalls, “There were many times when I was frustrated and worried, but I was never hopeless. What helped me get through the hard times was the fact that I was passionate about what I was doing.” It’s been said

The Customer Service Diploma

program is the first of its kind and will be offered at the downtown Toronto campus, with its first intake set for Winter 2014.

Additionally, the program will incorporate guest lectures by senior executives from successful companies. “Young people will have a chance to hear from industry leaders about what makes their companies great,” says Mr. Kolber “our vision is to train future CEO’s.”

years since the establishment of World Academy of Music, and great success and recognition we’ve achieved!

We’ve been able to organize five wonderful concerts: the first in 2009. These concerts were all a huge success and attended by as many as five hundred fans of classical and popular music. All concerts included performances by different talented artists, ranging from four year old beginners to teachers who are renowned for piano and violin performances.

The concerts showcased not only striking solo performers - the winners of various music festivals and competitions - but also numerous duets and ensembles. These vocal ensembles turned heads in the viewer’s hall and made a huge impression on the audience, solidifying us as the Top Music School in Markham!

30 Years of KICKS Kicks Dance Studio celebrates their 30th Anniversary with the 2013 Top Choice Award.

Bryson-Ko opened KICKS Dance Studio in Markham, fulfilling her dream of teaching dance lessons to children. In 1984 there were 13 students signed up which grew to an enrolment of 50 by the end of the first year. Thousands of students have walked through the doors since 1984. KICKS has also grown in the types of dance classes offered. In the early days, it was ballet, tap and jazz. Now, along with these three dance styles, classes are also offered in acro, hip hop, mini dance, lyrical, contemporary, musical theatre, song and dance, conditioning, salsa babies, and Zumba!

They pride themselves in offering the highest quality dance training in the Markham area. KICKS offers a variety of recreational and competitive programs for boys and girls, ages 2 and up, beginners to advanced.

KICKS Dance Studio’s newly renovated, state-of-the-art Markham facility offers over 4000 square feet of professional dance space. Tacos Baja, highlight of the meal

You could spend all night exploring the hand-painted mural in El Catrin, which was created over the course of 100 days by three imported authentic Mexican artists

El Catrin A masterful Mexican experience that will throw you head first into a side of the culture and cuisine that you never knew existed.

Michael Fillier If you’re like me, when you think about Mexican food in Toronto, only a few places will come to mind and most of those can probably be described as fast food at best.

Of the selection available in the city, most revolve around the stereotypical concept of Mexican. You wouldn’t be out of place showing up in a sombrero. While there’s nothing wrong with those places, they fail to truly capture the depth of Mexican culture and the richness of its cuisine.

El Catrin is not only redefining the idea of Mexican dining, it is creating an experience all of its own. Located in the heart of Toronto’s Distillery Historic District, El Catrin serves up traditional and modern Mexican cuisine, but this is no taco cart!

El Catrin has created one of the most elaborate and breathtaking interiors in the

entire city. Let’s start with the mesmerizing backbone of the decor, the two-storey high, hand-painted mural that was created over the course of 100 days by three imported authentic Mexican artists. Had it not been for the other interesting sights throughout the establishment, I probably would have spent the entire evening exploring it. The theme throughout can be best described as macabre Mexican, a style popularized by imagery and costumes of the Mexican holiday “Day of the Dead”. There is a story behind every detail in El Catrin and if you ask, the staff will be delighted to share it with you.

A quick reminder, we are still in a restaurant.

El Catrin is all about being authentic. To stay true to this claim, you would think they would bring in one of Mexico’s Top Chefs to create and execute the menu. Well, that’s exactly what they did!

The menu is presented tapas style, so it is great for sharing and experimenting with many different flavours and combinations. The emphasis on freshness is something you will experience first-hand as they actually prepare the guacamole for you table-side. Each course to hit the table was uniquely presented and incredibly fresh, they boast about variety and they certainly delivered. My personal favourite was the “Tacos Baja” (Crispy fried haddock, coleslaw, chipotle dip,

flour tortilla), it was light, crispy and packed with flavour.

With so many tastes coming from the kitchen, how about a little something to wash it down? It just so happens that El Catrin’s cocktails are “off the hook” and they boast Canada’s largest tequila and mescal bar with over 120 different varieties. We sampled a variety of cocktails and tequilas and they definitely live up to their reputation. Tequila is wrongly known as a shooter, but when you get a taste of some of their aged varieties, which are carefully paired with bitter and sweet palette cleansers, you will learn to appreciate the fine art of sipping your tequila.

The meal ended on a sweet note, with a Mexican dessert platter consisting of the ever-popular churros, tres leches cake (three milk cake) and my I-wish-I-hadsome-right-now favourite, the Mexican chocolate bar, a double smoked spiced hazelnut chocolate bar!

Service can make or break any dining experience and by the end of the night our Argentine server was telling us jokes and really treating us like friends, not customers. That really sealed the deal for me and in this case the deal is definitely real! It was in that moment, while laughing, sipping on tequila and sharing food in a brilliant environment that I really realized the point to El Catrin. It is time to loosen up and just share the moment with people that matter to you.

Novo Spa in Yorkville We've reviewed many spas in our days, and Novo is like no other!

Francesca Filippelli The exterior of the spa is not one to be considered the most elegant in Toronto. In fact, the outer layer does not match the high value and quality of service that we experienced here today.

I was scheduled to proceed for an hour and a half facial treatment, where on the other hand, my colleague was scheduled for an hour and a half Steam Bed Body Therapy. We were directed into our change rooms immediately with little to no wait. The change rooms are well organized with a sweet decor and a bit smaller than what we expected. We’d hoped that there would be actual private rooms to change in rather than just two bathrooms. They showed us to our locker which included a robe, slippers and a key to keep. As we made our way over to the waiting room we began to feel overwhelmed with the peaceful atmosphere they had created for their clients. After a little time passed, we had been approached and assigned to two different personal massage therapists who seemed more than happy to serve us.

Before I began my facial I was offered the option to have my face “scanned” where in turn she would be able to see exactly

what kind of treatment would be best for me. You would be surprised what the scanning will showcase, definitely not visible to the naked eye. Shortly after being educated about my own facial needs we agreed on moving forward with the “Guinot Hydradermie Facial”...

Intimidating name, I know... but oh was it worth it.

“The Guinot Hydradermie, is deeply penetrating and aims to correct skin problems from the inside out. This advanced non-invasive procedure penetrates active ingredients to bring you amazing results.

The treatment starts with mild electrotherapy and gentle massage movement of the rollers to help the plant based ingredients penetrate into the skin, deep cleansing it and revealing its inner beauty”. I swear I can still feel the gentle and relaxing energy surrounding the room… “Next, high frequency action is used to oxygenate and energize the cells, as well as create an antibacterial effect.

A customized mask and relaxing massage completes the treatment”. If i could, I would have stayed there for hours, but unfortunately for me, the end had arrived and I was instructed by Charlotte Rae that the session was complete.

And…she is fantastic at what she does. She executed the treatment flawlessly and I recommend her work to anyone who is interested in receiving this type of therapy. If any, or all the employees are trained the same, this location will have no problems continuing on the successful path it is currently in.

As she exits the room and you are about to step off the bed, I suggest you to move slowly and carefully, you might experience some dizziness, for laying still for more than an hour. After your treatment you are welcomed into the “relaxing room” where you are encouraged to stay for as long as you may need. Drinks

are available and I recommend lots of water and definetely taste some of their tea, it’s delicious and so soothing. As I reunited with David, you could tell by his facial expressions that he enjoyed his stay just as much as I did. He had little to say but he did mention that “Finally, it is not only the rich in soul that will discover Heaven, because today, I found heaven and came back!

And for less than $150.00. If that's not a good deal, I don't know what is!”

We truly recommend the experience of becoming “Novo” again. Aside from the treatment, the staff was very well trained and well co-ordinated, what more could you ask for.

ArthurK (Kerekes)  Toronto, On  Event Planner/Producer  Owner of Fusion Events  fusion-events.ca Although today we know him as a planner and producer of lavish, aweinspiring events, Arthur Kerekes began his professional career as a musician. Raised in a very musical family, Arthur’s father played the violin and his mother the flute.

Arthur’s fondest childhood memories consist of family gatherings ’round the record player, the tune of great classics ringing through his ears. Arthur began to study the saxophone when he was just nine years old. He played in his elementary school’s rendition of “Tequila” in grade five, which ignited his great love for live performance at an early age. Classically trained under the wing of the well-known Canadian saxophonist, Paul Brodie, Arthur quickly advanced his skills.

In high school, Arthur discovered funk, R&B and jazz. His musical voice underwent a unique transformation as he began to guest play with several local jazz bands. At 17, he and a few friends started their own band, by the name of God Made Me Funky.

In 2005, the band produced their very first original album, which was followed by a new album each year thereafter, of which their 2008 release was nominated for a Juno Award. Over the years, God Made Me Funky flourished as a modern day jazz and soul band and has had the opportunity to tour the country, play at various jazz festivals throughout the provinces, make appearances on Entertainment Tonight, Breakfast Television, eTalk and Much Music, and perform at high profile corporate events for Nike, Ontario Tourism and Fidelity Investments.

As time went on, Arthur naturally adopted the role of Band Booking Manager. In this position he began to

world and slowly starting to gain recognition. “My musical inspiration is most definitely Amy Winehouse,” explains Alessia “I’ve been listening to her music for as long as I can remember, and my interest in jazz music made her even more of an inspiration to start my singing career.” Singing while playing piano/guitar, Alessia covers a large variety of genres and artists, from Adele, Lana Del Rey, Amy Winehouse and Beyoncé to Maroon 5 and Justin Timberlake. Alessia adds her own unique and lovable twist to each song with a voice undeniably mature beyond her years. Her most viewed video to date is "Mirrors - By Justin Timberlake (Cover)" which has over 125,000 views and has recently been chosen for Ryan Seacrest's "Totally Covered" contest. Ranking third in the contest, Alessia has decided to take what she learned from her experience and put it to practice in all of her upcoming endeavours. She is looking forward to continuing her career in the music industry, while always following her motto “don’t limit yourself and stay determined.”
