Women on Fire Health Expo Answers Your Burning Health Questions
EMILY SINGH/TORONTO CARIBBEAN “To keep the body in good health is a duty... otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.” These are just some of the wise words of Buddha that everyone should integrate into their lives. The first step to becoming a more healthy and happy individual is becoming more educated. The Women on Fire Health Expo held on Sunday at Savoy Event Venue in Markham, Ontario aimed to educate the public about healthy living and taking preventative health measures. Allison Harvey, CEO of The Networking Diva Group was the backbone behind the expo and went out of her way to make sure the event was a success. This expo was far from typical, the vendors went beyond just showcasing health products and services, they served as educators. This is just one of the few things that sets Harvey apart from the rest and makes her events shine. Some of the amazing vendoreducators included: Alka’s Total Fitness, Seacret, Usana, Complete Health & Fitness, Isagenix, Afterbirth, On Purpose and Tupperware. The day was filled with exciting giveaways of door prizes and gifts from the various vendors.
The highlight of the expo was the three speakers of the day Suzan Hart, Ross McKenzie and keynote speaker Pat Kennedy. Suzan Hart empowered everyone with her “Fit is the new Sexy” motto as she took the stage to talk about reclaiming your health and time. Ross McKenzie’s moving story of struggle and triumph through suffering from mental illness moved everyone who was listening. McKenzie is the producer of a film called Bipolarized that depicts his long 16-year journey battling bipolar disorder and his experience being heavily medicated. What made McKenzie’s speech so beautiful was his ability to open up and share with everyone his personal experiences and spread the word that there are alternative means of treatment other than medication. McKenzie spoke about feeling a pain in his lower spine and visiting a Shaman and then feeling the pain go away after. The main keynote speaker of the evening was Pat Kennedy who is a registered nurse. Kennedy spoke about taking preventative measures in terms of breast health in the form of self-breast checks
and healthy lifestyle. For Kennedy noninvasive means of checking for breast abnormalities is the way to go. She is a strong advocate of thermography as she is Director of Clinical Services at Thermography Clinics in London, Windsor & Hanover. “I wanted to do an event with purpose. Many of my events are just vendors and people coming in which is great. I wanted it to be more purposeful. I realized we are actually in a health epidemic and we really need to focus on our health and make it our first priority. If you have money and you’re sick it doesn’t matter, if you have family and you’re sick it doesn’t matter, if you have the best job in the world and you get sick it doesn’t matter. You should become proactive with your health,” said Allison Harvey. The need to educate and help one another down the path of good health is crucial now more than ever with the obesity rate on the rise. Events such as health expos inform the public about some of the services that are out there to help get them on the right track to a healthy, happy life. Healthy is the new sexy! Make the move towards improving your personal health.

Sholla Lampkin: An entrepreneur at heart and LOVES to travel Born in the West Indies to a mother who was a teacher and father who is an entrepreneur/ business man, she migrated to Canada when she was 2 years old. People actually joke, that she is Canadian and she doesn’t really dispute it. Sholla grew up in the 80’s and 90’s in a rough neighborhood but despite that, she excelled in school and remained focused, determined and refused to become a product of her surroundings. She was often seen as the leader and marched to her own beat. At an early age she had a desire to become a teacher and would often summon her baby sister to school lessons at night. But deep down inside, her ultimate goal was to be her own boss – own a business. She suppressed this goal when she found out she was going to be a mother and decided to focus on her prized possession, her daughter. Sholla started her career in the banking industry 18 years ago and worked for several major Canadian and U.S. financial institutions. She was very fortunate to have managers who saw her potential and who pushed her through the corporate labyrinth into roles that not only developed her, but also challenged her. However, she never lost sight of her ultimate goal, and in 2011 she seized the opportunity.
Her cousin was getting married and she “inserted” herself as the wedding planner. She had so much fun doing it that “In My Elyment ~ Event Planning & Design” was created. Sholla is a self- professed perfectionist with great attention to detail and an eye for design. She holds a Masters in Project Management and runs her events like mini projects. In 2012 she became a Certified Wedding coordinator through WPIC and this year she saw business almost triple since inception, with a record number of events. The businesses don’t stop there, she also owns two MLM companies (Arbonne and a travel business) and she is an avid traveler, recently returning from an amazing trip to India. How does she successfully juggle all of this? “Well, you just have to be really organized and focused, she says. I don’t allow the little things to distract me. I watch very little TV and devote most of my time to working on my businesses, networking, raising awareness and continual education. When I’m ready to have some fun, I jump on a plane! Life is too short and you only have one shot at it. Nothing can stop me or
hold me back”. Her daughter, who is a social worker, also seems to have the business gene and has started her own fitness blog where companies have asked her to write for their health magazines. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Check out her work at www. inmyelyments.com and for more information on any of the businesses, please email Sholla at inmyelyment@ gmail.com or 416.708.5882.

Tears, anger as part of historic Greyfriars church demolished TRINIDAD -- Hours after he ordered the demolition of the historic Greyfriars Church of Scotland, owner Alfred Galy agreed to stay his hand. But not before a demolition crew smashed its way through the northern wall of the Frederick Street, Port-of-Spain landmark. Despite Sunday’s bad weather, workers of Joel Ramdeen and Co, working with an excavator, started demolition around 5 am. By 8 am, the church hall was reduced to rubble, and the northern wall of the church had been taken down. Joshua Lu, who had been circulating a petition calling for the preservation of the site as a historic building, alerted members of the NGO Citizens for Conservation, who rushed to the scene to try to stop the demolition. Conservation activists and other concerned citizens started to flock to the churchyard, as news of the demolition spread via social media. Lu said he often drove into the city on a weekend to check on the site and ensure no demolition work was being done. In an attempt to stop the excavator operator from knocking down the remaining church walls, Lu stood inside the building, but the owner of the excavator ordered the operator to continue the demolition. Lu was later joined by Dr NurahRosalie Cordner, an adviser to the Minister of National Diversity and Social Integration, who jumped onto the excavator and appealed to the operator to stop destroying the country’s heritage. As four workmen tried to forcibly remove her, Cordner’s hijab was pulled off by and her purse was ripped open, leaving her personal belongings scattered among the debris. Tears, outrage Blinking away tears, executive secretary of Citizens for Conservation, Michele Celestine said Sunday’s action caught everyone unawares. “Mr Galy continues to disrespect the process, although we have been in discussions with him all week and for the past two weeks trying to come up with a city plan where he can construct a building as he says he wants to do, and we would get
to keep our historic church.” Celestine said it was disappointing to witness the destruction of a building which was centuries old. (The church was built in the 1830s.) “The notice of intention to list this property as a historic site has been served on Mr Galy over three weeks now,” she pointed out. Galy had expressed an interest in purchasing adjacent properties to construct offices, she said. Chairman of the Council of the National Trust Prof Winston Suite said Galy had acted in a “dishonest and disrespectful” manner. “Like a thief in the night, he has moved in to destroy the building and hoping by the time people wake up Monday morning, everything would be done and it would be a fait accompli.” Suite was joined by his wife, attorney Lynette Seebaran-Suite, and deputy principal of the University of the West Indies, Prof Rhoda Reddock, who were outraged over the demolition. Minister: no respect Standing in the rain as he surveyed the scene in disbelief, Minister of National Diversity and Social Integration Rodger Samuel said: “They just don’t have respect for this country—absolutely no respect— because we have been negotiating, the Town and Country Division up to Thursday was negotiating with this gentleman in good faith trying to help him work around it. And this is what happens, like a thief in the night.” Samuel said no demolition approvals were granted by the Port-of-Spain City Corporation. He said he would remain on the site until the excavator was removed. Way forward Up to Sunday evening, Galy was expected to sit with officials to discuss the way forward. Those meetings are expected to include Samuel, members of the National Trust, and representatives from the Town and Country Planning Division. - Trinidad Guardian

PPP - Need for stronger public awareness campaign GUYANA -- The 7th cycle of continuous registration started Sunday and the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has called on the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to step up its public awareness campaign to ensure every eligible vote is registered. “Our Party supports the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) in ensuring the enfranchisement of every eligible citizen. The Party urges GECOM to step up its public relations efforts with regards to the commencement of the 7th cycle of continuous registration,” General Secretary of the party, Clement Rohee said. His remarks were made during the party’s weekly press conference held at Freedom House, Robb Street. Additionally, GECOM’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Richard François Sunday told the Guyana Chronicle that the Commission’s public awareness campaign will follow similar campaigns rolled out in previous registration cycles. “Based on the kind of areas, we will use the appropriate methods in our public awareness campaign. The campaign will follow the same trend it has during previous registration cycles,” he said. François added that the public awareness campaign will include the use of radio, television, newspapers and mobile public address systems. Documents Needed GECOM advises that persons wishing to make use of the continuous registration process must be in possession of the relevant source documents as might be necessary to support their applications for registration. These are original birth certificate issued by the General Register Office or a valid Guyana Passport; original marriage certificate (and original birth certificate) – in the case of a name change by way of marriage; original deed poll and original birth certificate – in the case of any change of name by deed poll; and original naturalisation
certificate issued by the Home Affairs Ministry and original birth certificate/valid passport – in the case of naturalisation. Evidence (photocopy/duplicate) of an application having been made for naturalisation will not be accepted. Documents Not Accepted Baptismal certificates, expired passports, photocopies of relevant documents or letters from priests, elders, headmasters, village captains/toshaos and Justices of the Peace or existing ID cards will not be acceptable as source documents for registration. Persons who were already registered could, if necessary, apply for a name change in the case of the change of name(s) by marriage or deed poll, since they were registered; or apply for correction(s) if there is incorrect information on their National ID cards; or apply for a transfer if they have changed their addresses since they were last registered. Additionally, persons who are already registered could request that their photographs be retaken if the quality of the photograph on their ID cards is unacceptable, or collect their new ID cards if they have not done so as yet. GECOM has 28 permanent registration offices located in the 10 administrative regions. Persons are required to visit the registration office that is responsible for the registration of persons in their area of residence to apply for registration or uplift their National Identification Card if they were previously registered and have not done so as yet. At the end of the sixth cycle of continuous registration, in the latter part of June, there were registrations of some 14,981 new persons, 14,942 of whom have already been verified. There were also 2,004 transfers, owing to issues related to change of address, and 2,747 changes/corrections to existing registration information. - Guyana Chronicle
Following Presidentʼs promise of announcement soon GUYANA -- The possibility of a move to early general and regional elections in Guyana is increasing, according to General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Clement Rohee. “With how the winds are blowing, it looks like we are headed for another general election,” he said Sunday at the party’s weekly press conference held at Freedom House, Robb Street. His comments follow Sunday’s disclosure by President Donald Ramotar that an announcement on the way forward, following the much-talked-about November 10 prorogation of Parliament, can be expected shortly. “I do not intend to recall the Parliament and prorogue it again. Very soon, I will be making an announcement on the way forward,” Mr. Ramotar said. The PPP General Secretary acknowledged the President’s comments and told members of the media Sunday that on matters like these, Mr. Ramotar, a member of the Executive Committee of the Party, would share his perspective and engage other party members in discussions. Rohee said, “It (the issue) would have certain political inputs from the party, but in the final analysis the take is with the Government. “…on these matters Office of the President is better informed than we are at a political level. So on a matter like that we would be taking the cue, so to speak, from the Government on how they have opted to pursue an agenda on this matter.”
Feel on the Ground He added that the “feel on the ground” is that there is a desire to move to an early general election. “Our supporters on the ground are of the view that we should go to early general elections… all indications show that the preferred option is to go to general and regional elections,” the PPP General Secretary said. Focus Shifted Asked about local government elections, which President Donald Ramotar in early November announced will be held by the second quarter of 2015, Rohee said the focus seems to have shifted from local government elections to general elections. Evidence of the focus being shifted, the PPP General Secretary said, is seen in the weekly protests mounted by A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), ongoing for more than two months now. The protests initially were aimed at demanding that the Government set a date for Local Government Elections (LGE). However, APNU’s protests have taken on a new dimension, now including a call for early general elections. Rohee was emphatic in stressing that despite the positions being taken by the Opposition, the PPP has not taken a “policy position” as it relates to a preference between local government and general elections. The last general elections in Guyana were held in November 2011. - Guyana Chronicle

Port-of-Spain South still in doubt TRINIDAD -- People’s National Movement Port-of-Spain South nominee Louis Lee Sing says it would be unthinkable for anyone to ask him to support or assist incumbent Marlene McDonald if PNM’s screening team chooses her. Lee Sing, former Port-of-Spain Mayor, is one of three nominees being screened for that seat Wednesday at Balisier House. He spoke to the Guardian after the constituency’s executive met last Wednesday and agreed to back McDonald for the candidacy. PNM Chair for Port-of-Spain South Jean Elder confirmed this. “Port-of-Spain South supports Marlene McDonald. She’s the person whom the executive will recommend to the screening team on Wednesday.” Elder declined, last week, to comment on the prospects of Lee Sing and radio show host Isha Wells, another nominee. Lee Sing is claiming that the meeting of the executive was flawed. “I’m reliably informed the incumbent was at the meeting the executive held last Wednesday to decide on who they’d recommend. That’s highly unacceptable and runs in the face of any democratic process and a level playing field,” Lee Sing said. “I am however still awaitng list of party group chairmen and secretaries which I requested from the constituency executive since October 21 and it’s now a couple days before screening.” Lee Sing said it was important for PNM to be cohesive since the Independent Liberal Party (ILP) had also targeted POS South. McDonald didn’t answer calls Sunday. Confusion over San Fernando East Lee Sing was concerned at his party’s handling of the San Fernando East MP Patrick Manning, a former prime minister. Manning said last week he would consider contesting the seat in the 2015 general election. The announcement came as a surprise to many as Manning has had major and prolonged health issues. “I heard people asking
what Mr Manning wants. I think he wants proper succession in San Fernando East and it’s not too much to ask, Lee Sing said. “Mr Manning needs to be treated as the special person he has earned the place to be. You can’t treat with him as you would everyone else.” San Fernando East public relations officer Anthony Clarke said Manning was awaiting a reply from political leader Keith Rowley to a letter suggesting that he and Rowley hold talks. However, PNM general secretary Ashton Ford said he was awaiting a reply from Manning on his November 26 invitation for Manning to meet party’s national executive on Wednesday. Ford said Manning hadn’t replied. “The invitation was issued on behalf of the leader and executive but I don’t know if he’s coming. We merely invited him to a meeting. We’re at a loss why he released the letter publicly,” he said. “When the general secretary writes him to come and meet the national executive, that must be like a red flag before a bull,” Lee Sing said. “If I was leader I’d seek to meet Mr Manning one on one, perhaps with the general secretary. But to ask him to meet the entire national executive is not only unreasonable but also suggests indiscretion on the part of those requesting the meeting. When they did that, what did they expect of Manning?” He added, “I hope the leadership will return to the drawing board and find the best way to address San Fernando East, because San Fernando East ain’t Port-of-Spain South. Ford said Rowley was due home Sunday. Asked if Rowley would respond to Manning today, Ford said Rowley would have to speak on that. He said San Fernando East has asked the party to postpone nomination submission, due today. Clarke said there was no urgent need to nominate candidates. - Trinidad Guardian
The prorogation of Parliament GUYANA -- An announcement on the way forward, following the much-talked-about November 10 prorogation of Parliament, can be expected shortly. This is according to President Donald Ramotar, who made the surprise announcement Sunday at the opening of the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha’s annual Festival of Art Forms, popularly known as ‘Kala Utsav’. “I do not intend to recall the Parliament and prorogue it again. Very soon, I will be making an announcement on the way forward,” he told the packed to capacity gathering at the Dharmic Sanskritik Kendra, in suburban Prashad Nagar, where the event was held. His decision comes in the wake of Leader of the Opposition, Brigadier (Rtd.) David Granger’s reluctance to officially respond to a letter, dated November 18, inviting him for talks, following the prorogation of Parliament on November 10. Both APNU and the Alliance for Change (AFC) have made it clear that they will not engage the President in talks unless the prorogation is lifted and Parliamentary work resumes. Since the President’s move to prorogue Parliament, there have been varying sentiments from different sections of society, many being in support of the prorogation, which would facilitate dialogue in face of the current political impasse. The President has always maintained that the need for dialogue was uppermost in his mind when he made his decision. Paving the way for greater dialogue among political parties, he contends, would have kept the 10th Parliament alive to address critically important issues currently before the National Assembly. Some of these matters include: The Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) (Amendment) Bill, which is currently with the Parliamentary Special Select Committee; and the second reading of the Education Bill 2014, the Land Surveyors Bill 2014, and the Broadcasting (Amendment) Bill
2014. Also among the Bills scheduled for a first reading are the Food Safety Bill 2014, and the Motor Vehicles Insurance (Third Party Risks) (Amendment) Bill 2014. Other important matters before the National Assembly include the appointment of Members to the Rights of the Child Commission (ROC) and the Women and Gender Equality Commission. Merits Of Dialogue Additionally, despite the combined Opposition’s rejection of the President’s invitation for talks, the merits of dialogue seem to have been acknowledged, since there have been calls to regional and international bodies to assist local politicians in overcoming the political gridlock. The first such call was made by AFC Executive and Speaker of the National Assembly, Raphael Trotman. He wrote the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) to invite a delegation that will engage all sides, in the interest of moving past the act of prorogation. The effect of ending the first session of the 10th Parliament via prorogation is the termination of the business of the National Assembly. As a result the AFC sponsored no-confidence motion was not considered. Also APNU had, prior to November 10, signalled its intent to support the push through of the motion. Had it not been for the proclamation to prorogue Parliament, if the no-confidence motion was passed, Guyana would have been headed to early general elections within three months. However, Mr. Ramotar has made it clear that if these efforts prove futile, there will be a move to early general elections. If there is a move to general elections, it would come more than a year early. The last general and regional elections were held in November 2011. - Guyana Chronicle

Manchester police chief promises tough times for criminals JAMAICA -- Don’t be fooled by his warm smile and sunny, relaxed disposition. New chief of police in Manchester, Superintendent Melvin Brown, says when it comes to crime he is as hard as nails. And he insists that under his watch no quarter will be given to criminals in this south-central parish. In fact, according to Brown, Mandeville (and the wider Manchester) “is not a safe haven for criminals and (the police) will be putting (them) under serious pressure…” In his first press conference since taking charge of the parish in October, Brown, fresh from leading the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s (JCF’s) colourful horseback division, the Mounted Troop, resorted to a touch of bravado. He was, he said, the “Sheriff” who had ridden into town to take control. “The cowboy has left town, but I want to let them (criminals) know that the sheriff has ridden into town and they must beware, so I say to criminals keep out,” he said. Criminals, he said, “will either be arrested and face the full length of the law or you will get out of town”. The ‘cowboy’ reference was to popular former head of the Police Area Three
(Clarendon, Manchester, St Elizabeth) Derrick ‘cowboy’ Knight who moved on as part of the JCF’s recent reshuffle. Already, Brown knows his tough talking will have to be matched by strong action. In the seven days prior to Thursday’s press conference, there were five murders, hoisting the 2014 count to 37 so far this year compared to 34 for the same period last year. Among the recent killings was that of 74-year-old Mulgrave Rowe of Lititz in the Alligator Pond police division of South Manchester. Rowe, a farmer and vendor was at home, hours after returning from Coronation market in Kingston when he was shot by robbers who had broken into his home. That murder emphasised once again the increasing vulnerability of deep rural communities to ruthless criminals, many of whom are constantly on the move. Just as was the case for his predecessors, migrant criminals pose a challenge for Brown. He said intelligence reports suggested that isolated avenues, such as the coastal road linking Clarendon to south Manchester and south eastern St Elizabeth through Alligator Pond; as well as several roads built for bauxite operations are being used by criminals. Brown says there is a promise of in-
creased mobility which will help the police to give greater attention to unwanted migrants. He pledged stepped up patrols, spot checks and snap raids intended to make wrongdoers as uncomfortable as possible. Mandeville and its environs and the northern town of Christiana and its surroundings are the regions most targeted by criminals and, of necessity, the focus of strongest police presence. Murders and shootings apart, “major crimes” are said to be down in Manchester. However, Brown says break-ins remain a headache. He urged “those who can afford it” to invest in modern security systems, including surveillance and alarm equipment. Old-fashioned methods such as a “couple of good dogs” were also recommended. But most crucially, Brown said Manchester residents should come together in “neighbourhood watches” and should “live good with each other” as a way of helping the police to fight criminals. “One burglar said he was able to get away so easily because neighbours are selfish with each other,” Brown told journalists. He emphasised time and again, the need for residents and business people to stay alert and vigilant in protecting themselves and their interests, especially with the approach of the
Christmas season. There was more than a hint of annoyance as the new police chief, who is a native of Malvern in St Elizabeth, spoke of naivety and carelessness leading to two major robberies at the centre of Mandeville recently. Robberies, which he said, could have been easily prevented with basic attention to security and, as Deputy Superintendent Marlene Bailey described it, “good sense”. In one case, Brown said, an 18-yearold woman sent by her employers to deposit “four point odd” million dollars was robbed as she prepared to enter the bank. “You can’t be giving a single young miss so much money to deposit; that is senseless,” Brown lamented. In the other case, a newly opened remittance service centre, which had failed to invest in any security measures, was robbed. “One young lady was in the office, no security guard, no alarm system, there was no camera,” said an incredulous Brown. The new police chief said that from the perspective of the police, plans were in place for expanded and upgraded surveillance in the Mandeville business district. - Jamaica Observer

Condoms, caring and communication Sex and sexual health are two important parts of our lives that can be fun and exciting, but can also make us shy and awkward. Even the physical aspects of sex involve a lot of emotion, and our bodies go through an amazing process of chemical and bodily changes before, during and after. But for many reasons, some personal, some social and some cultural, conversations about sex and sexual health are taboo and we avoid them. However, avoidance will not help us answer important questions we may have or help us recognize healthy and unhealthy patterns in our relationships. There are organizations, groups and online spaces that create safe ways to access information about sex such as ASAAP - the Alliance for South Asian AIDS Prevention. At ASAAP we believe that safe and pleasurable sexual activity and open discussion fosters good sexual health, something to which everyone is entitled. And by safe we don’t only mean using a condom, here’s some key elements that make for healthy, safe and
pleasurable sex: Trust and Communication: Through open communication and honesty, we can develop emotional and physical connections which are consensual and enjoyable. And we can be open and honest with our partners when we are able to trust them, which takes time. Trust is earned in relationships and is an ongoing process even if people have been together for years. Support and Understanding: Using a condom is the beginning of protection in a relationship but security comes in the form of support and understanding in an environment with equal power dynamics. It comes from a feeling of being able to identify and talk about our desires and pleasures. This is difficult to achieve but being aware of the power we may or may not hold in relationships can be a good first step. Acceptance without Judgment: It may not be easy for us to under-
stand and sometimes even accept our sexual desires. At times they can feel wrong compared to what we are told is normal, but we are not alone. Our online communities which cater to South Asian and/or Indo-Caribbean guys who like guys (Dosti, Snehithan and Lassi) and South Asian and/or Indo-Caribbean women (Brownkiss.ca) allow community members to learn through sharing experiences and ideas. At ASAAP, our unique experience of working with the community allows us insights into how cultural factors can complicate dialogue around safer sex. Keeping a focus on community centered practice, our programs are designed and delivered based on feedback from the people whom we work with. If you are interested in knowing more or getting connected to spaces that are safe and nonjudgmental, get in touch with us so we can work at making this complicated, but beautiful journey easier. - ASAAPA
Police, public, press await Azmon in Arima TRINIDAD -- Once labelled T&T’s most wanted man, Azmon Alexander is expected to appear before the Arima Court today. Police are already securing the venue and a heavy media presence is anticipated. Alexander and a 17-year-old accomplice were to appear before an Arima magistrate Friday but a mix-up in the charges frustrated curious onlookers who had showed up to get a glimpse of the men charged with kidnapping, murder and other offences. Another large crowd is expected Monday. They are accused of
kidnapping Brasso Seco residents Felix Martinez, 52, Irma Rampersad, 49, her daughters — Felicia, 17, and Jennelle Gonzales, 19 — and her daughter, 14-month-old Shania Amoroso. The family members were last seen on October 26 and reported missing two days later. Martinez also was reported missing but residents thought he had gone on a hunting trip. On November 8, his body was found in a sleeping bag along with that of baby Shania. On November 11, Rampersad’s body was found near a tree. All three bodies were found badly decomposed in the Brasso Seco
forest. Rampersad and Martinez were strangled, according to autopsies. The cause of death for baby Shania remains unknown, however, as her autopsy was inconclusive owing to the advanced stage of decomposition. Three days after Rampersad’s body was found, sisters Jennelle and Felicia were rescued by police from a makeshift camp in the Lalaja forest after a shootout with two men who were guarding them. The sisters have been kept in a safe house since they were rescued. - Trinidad Guardian
Childrenʼs advocate wants law dealing with abduction strengthened JAMAICA -- Children’s Advocate Diahann Gordon-Harrison is worried that Jamaica could become a target for international human traffickers because of the lax laws in place to deal with crimes against children, especially as they relate to abduction. Gordon-Harrison’s concern was heightened by the abduction last week of a seven-month-old boy from his mother in St Ann. She said that based on what was happening internationally, Jamaica was at risk if the gap in the legislation was not corrected quickly. “Child stealing, this is an anomaly in the law, because when you look at the offence it is treated so lightly, by virtue of the statute, that it says, oh well, if someone steals a child they will get seven years, and when you compare it with kidnapping it’s life imprisonment,” said Gordon-Harrison. In last week’s incident, the police reported that the mother was lured from her home in St Mary to St Ann where the infant was taken.
Police have since been searching for the baby and have called on the public to share any information that they may have about the incident. Speaking about the abduction, Gordon-Harrison said: “Speculation is rife; is it that they are going to abuse the child, is it that it’s somebody who can’t mother a child that wants so badly to have a child that they have decided to steal this one? “Persons are concerned, as you would expect, because it is pretty phenomenal for a child that is so young to be taken from the mother,” GordonHarrison added. Asked whether the lax laws in relation to child abduction could attract international criminals to local shores, the children’s advocate said the idea was not far-fetched. “Persons who have criminal intent always seek to exploit anywhere they see perceived weaknesses,” Gordon-Harrison said. She said that while she did not have any evidence that the illegal
practice had started here, she was concerned. “In terms of reasonable foreseeability, that is something that perhaps we need to look into, especially in the event of international abduction across borders. “When we look at the number of children that continue to go missing, yes, you have a large number that return home, but the question is, when they are away, what are the ills they are exposed to and some of them turn up dead, so I think it is something we need to take a lot more seriously,” she said. “I think the fact that the Parliament is reviewing the relevant legislation now, which is the Offences Against the Person Act, it really is an opportune time to not make this kind of lax approach remain... I think the penalties need to be more commensurate with the seriousness of the offence,” Gordon-Harrison said. - Jamaica Observer

Scandal about to erupt in T&T, thanks to Machel Montano! Aba Luke Entertainment Ladies, if you think Machel Montano’s only good for gyrating on stage and throwing around soca instructions, think again. The Taipan’s about to wow you in yet another way, we’ve learnt. Now, remember earlier this year, we told you that Montano had been in India meeting with film directors and other film execs on a feature length Bollywood film? Well, that movie’s about to begin shooting and guess who’s in the mix? Yep, our very own, Machel Jesus Montano! Machel will act in a romantic role as Lee de Leon, a singer who finds himself entranced with Anita Panchouri,
the doting daughter of a deep in debt Indian businessman and ETCETERABUZZ.COM has learnt that T&T will feature as the backdrop of ‘Scandalous’. It’s coined a Bollywood-style Caribbean musical and will star, Machel, actress, Natalie Perera and Bollywood star Kabir Bedi. Filming begins on December 8th. ‘Scandalous’ was written by New York based writer, Claire Ince and according to the writer herself, “Scandalous” tells a universal love story played out at the intersection of Indian and African culture that is unique to the twin island republic.” She says the movie draws on the influence of Shakespeare and his familiar themes of marriage, tradition and destiny. Now, as we understand, ‘Scandalous’ is expected to be quite a juicy flick. The character, Anita, being played by Perera, falls for the romantic Lee and decides she wants to be with him, just once, before she enters a loveless marriage for the sake of her father’s future.
But her designs gns on Lee do not escape Nikhil (played by Trini-born rn UK actor Valmike Rampersad), mpersad), the territorial younger unger brother of Anita’s a’s fiancee, who picks upp on the attraction. Roberts ex-
plained that the inaugural event was one that he personally took a strong interest in, ensuring that DJs and personalities delivered music with positive messages, having personally requested that they steer clear of any negative musical connotations. Much the same will be applied to the 2015 edition of ‘Baewatch- Soca + Water’. With décor already a topic of conversation between the 66 Entertainment Team and the folks at Rave Décor, Roberts said patrons will enjoy a full compliment of beach activities, inclusive of slides, a foam pit, inflatable toys and sprinklers. British couple to sue T&T for £2 million TRINIDAD -- A British couple is moving to sue the T&T government for £2 million, five years after a brutal machete attack in Tobago. In August 2009, Peter Green and his wife Murium were chopped and left for dead at their Bacolet Crescent home. They survived, barely, and with permanent injuries. Green, 70, a retired hotelier, had a cracked skull, fractured cheekbones, smashed teeth, limited vision after the knife cut out his left cornea, and nerve damage. Murium, who has multiple sclerosis, had both cheekbones and eye sockets smashed, and her jaw detached. According to UK media reports, the Greens are claiming that the T&T Government should have warned tourists the place was “dangerous.”They are reported as saying that they suffered ongoing physical and psychological damage from the incident. The reports days after a German couple—Hubertus Keil and his wife, Birgid—were found hacked to death at Minister’s Bay, a stone’s throw from their Bacolet residence. Green is quoted as saying: “It might cost us a lot of money but we’re going to do it. We want to bring it to people’s attention that these islands are dangerous. “There have been several other incidents. A Swedish couple was de-
capitated just west of Bacolet not long before we were attacked. It’s a beautiful place but they do not tell you your life is in danger if you’re going over there—it should carry some kind of health warning, like on a cigarette packet.” According to the report, Green said, “The authorities don’t like me because I am a constant reminder of what their republic stands for. They say I’ve ruined their tourism industry and had an

effect on hoteliers, but people need to know how dangerous this place is.” The legal challenge, the report said, will begin after medical assessments. Haunted house? Since the 2009 attack, the Greens’ house has been up for sale, but neighbours believe because of the stigma attached it is yet to find a new owner.
One neighbour told the Guardian: “Several couples from Europe and the USA came to view the property but after they were informed of the bloody attack they have changed their minds because they are very scared knowing too that the suspect is still on the loose.” “Now with the (Keils’) double murder, it makes it even worse.” The resident is very concerned and is thinking of selling her property and leaving Tobago for good. A couple who was in the area on Friday told T&T Guardian that they were there to view several properties in the Bacolet area but were thinking twice whether or not to pursue any transactions. “This is a very serious situation and I don’t think we will be in any position to risk our own lives.” The Greens’ former residence is now overgrown with bush and vines. The white paint is washed out and the walls are partly covered in moss. The main door of the house is boarded up. Another resident compared it to a haunted house out of a horror movie. Asked if the Keils had befriended the Greens, the resident said: “I will be honest, I do not know. But whenever we see each other, pleasantries are extended. That is a question that should be answered by Mr and Mrs Green.” - Trinidad Guardian

Ramdin calls for better helmets as Windies leave for SA TRINIDAD -- West Indies captain Denesh Ramdin is calling on the makers of cricket helmets to improve on their product, in light of the death of Australian batsman Phillip Hughes, who was felled by a bouncer from Sean Abbott. Ramdin made the comments as the West Indies left the Caribbean Sunday for South Africa to engage that country in a threeTest series. Ramdin said: “The helmets that we have needs to be improved because when you get a lash on it, you really feel the pain. It is basically just a piece of fibreglass and this is not adequate protection.” There is no international benchmark for standards on helmets and the International Cricket Council (ICC) had put a committee in place to look at this in 2013. Now with the death of hughes, they were likely to fastrack this process, so that helmet manufacturers will have to make a specific grade in order to be used on the market. Meanwhile, Ramdin said that his
team will be looking to give South Africa a run for their money. “This team is very tough but we have good players on our team and we are going to give them a run. We just need to keep focus and do the right things consistently and we will get the results we want,” he said. “The senior players including myself have to lead from the front and the younger players have to take their lead.” The West Indies open their tour with a warm-up match against a South African Invitational XI at Benoni on December 10 and this will be followed by the first Test, to be played at Centurion on December 17. They then play the Boxing Day Test match at Port Elizabeth on December 26 and the final game starts on January 2 at Capetown. After this three T20s and five ODIs will be played before the team returns home for the short break, ahead of the World Cup in New Zealand and Australia in February. - Trinidad Guardian
Windies leave for SA in wake of controversy TRINIDAD -- For the first time since the illfated tour of India last month, a West Indies squad will leave the Caribbean for an international assignment. The Test team left for South Africa Sunday. Groups of players departed from St Lucia, Barbados and Jamaica Sunday and will assemble in London Monday, before flying on to Johannesburg at 9 pm. West Indies are scheduled to arrive in South Africa’s biggest city tomorrow morning. Left-arm seamer Sheldon Cottrell will join the squad next week following the conclusion of the third round of matches in the WICB Professional Cricket League. He was asked by selectors to stay behind and represent Jamaica Franchise in order to prove his match readiness. The tour, which was shrouded in doubt following the controversial decision by players to abandon the one-day tour of India, will see West Indies contest three Tests against the World number one-ranked Proteas. Significantly, the 15-man Windies squad includes seven of those players who walked off the tour, and all eyes will be on team chemistry in light of the recent fractious developments. There had been speculation ahead of the squad’s selection that those players involved in the abandonment would be sacked. However, in announcing the squad, chief selector Clive Lloyd reiterated the selectors’ commitment to always choosing the best team available. The West Indies Cricket Board also came under pressure from St Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves, who sought and gained assurances that the players would not face censure because of their actions. Gonsalves was at the centre of ne-
gotiations between the WICB, the West Indies Players Association and the players, as the abandoned tour mushroomed into a full blown crisis. The confusion erupted after the one-day team on tour of India claimed that the changes in their tour contracts would result in a significant reduction in their earnings. With one-day captain Dwayne Bravo as their spokesman, the players lobbied WIPA and the WICB for a change to the contracts, without success. With no resolution in sight, the players quit the tour following the fourth One-Day International in Dharamsala, with the fifth match remaining in Kolkata, and the one-off Twenty20 International scheduled for Cuttack. The decision by the players forced the WICB to cancel the subsequent threeTest tour, a move which infuriated the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) and saw them slap the regional board with a US$42 million claim for losses incurred. Also, the BCCI suspended all bilateral relations with the WICB. However, the WICB announced recently that negotiations were underway with the BCCI for an amicable end to the impasse. President Dave Cameron had discussions with BCCI officials at an International Cricket Council meeting in Dubai recently. West Indies will be led by Denesh Ramdin and includes veteran opener Chris Gayle who missed the tour of India through injury. Stylish left-hander Darren Bravo will miss the tour after declining selection for “personal reasons”. West Indies are due to have their first major training session next Thursday before playing a three-day practice game in Benoni starting on December 10th. The first Test bowls off on December 17th at Centurion. - Trinidad Guardian

The great Bharat, journey to the motherland Alyssa Mahadeo TC Reporter With it’s beautifully preserved architecture and stories that make up it’s vast history India is a place filled with memories of times past, and a country seeking to integrate themselves into the new world. India is very big, with countless regional languages, cuisine, and subcultures. For many a trip to India is something that should be experienced at least once, and can be appreciated by fully immersing yourself into the Indian culture. Onkar Travels graciously offered us the chance to see for ourselves the people, history, and spiritual auras of the land and create an experience that is most definitely a worthwhile endeavor. One of the biggest challenges that
many people face before travelling to India, is the anxiety over the language barrier. When travelling to any foreign country where the first language isn’t English, it can be overwhelming wondering if you are going to be able to enjoy yourself, or understand all that is happening around you. Tourists from all over the world come to India, and so the locals have grown accustomed to catering to those who do not speak Hindi. Many of the signs at the Airport are in English with the Hindi translations underneath making it less overwhelming to those not comfortable with the local language. The airport is easy to navigate and there are people offering their services with a smile in order to make the experience a little less intimidating. The most pleasant surprise exiting the Indira Gandhi airport, is that the air quality is not what one would expect. While air pollution and smog are definite factors, the smell is not as repulsive as one may feel. India awakens all 5 of your senses simultaneously. The heat on the other hand is definitely something to talk about, and one needs to make sure to layer on that SPF to
brace themselves against the scorching sun. About 10 minutes away from the airport is where the culture shock really hits you, everywhere around you there is so much poverty. India is also a land of extreme polarity. It is home to some of the world’s wealthiest people but also home to millions of the poorest. Some people choose to beg, some people beg out of necessity, but it’s clear that it is an acceptable way to make an income. It is positive to see people who choose to do certain things and live certain ways, they live on the side of the road with their families under nothing more then a piece of tarp. Those that do not choose to beg and work for a living, make the most use of what is given to them. They live in poor conditions, but they make do with what they have and work for what they can provide themselves with. The landscape and architecture of India is truly something to behold. Every building, palace, and monument holds its own place in history. All of the structures are built to withstand time and each has its own place in history where millions of years
ago kings and queens used to live. Locations like the Red Fort, and the world renowned Taj Mahal are truly places to regard for the hard work, love and passion still linger amongst their walls. Some sites have been untouched for hundreds or even thousands of years and there is a magic to that which cannot be imitated or simulated. Travelling to India is a truly humbling experience. Even in a month, it would be impossible to experience the whole country, so plan ahead of what is most important for you to see. When you come back to the comforts of your own home you gain an appreciation of what you have, and for the choices that you have made that put you there. One can choose to stay in the touristy areas and have a very upper-class experience, or one can choose to ‘rough it’ a bit more and see the true India experience. Your trip will be what you make it. The Ultimate Coconut Rice Recipe (gluten free and vegetarian)
Chris De La Rosa Caribbean Cooking I was recently challenged to put together a coconut rice recipe, however the recipe must be foolproof. According to the person who emailed me, they have a difficult time cooking rice as it usually ends up a messy mush in the pot or under-cooked. They were looking for perfectly cooked coconut rice, grainy in texture and rich in Caribbean coconut flavors. Being a rice dish I thought it would be a good time to also have it appeal to vegetarians and friends on a gluten free diet at the same time. In order to make this as fool-proof as possible I employed the use of my rice cooker .. let’s get cooking! You’ll Need: 3 cups (rice cooker size) brown rice (long

wash wa w ashh it it firs st orr w heen cco hen ook oked ed d iitt can can be ggritty. riittty. y y. rst when cooked T h rice i you hhave two options. i O i 1– To wash Option place the rice in a deep bowl, cover with water and use you hands to massage the rice. As you do so you will notice the water will go cloudy. Pour out that water and repeat the steps until the water is no longer cloudy. Option 2- Place the rice in a strainer (fine mesh) and run cool water over it while using your hands to massage the grains. The water will go from cloudy to clear in a quick time.
*water (According to your rice cooker instructions)
Important Note: I noticed that my rice cooker’s cup is a bit smaller in size than an actual measuring cup, so I used the rice cooker’s measuring cup.
Note: Dried cranberries, mango and/or pineapple will work great as well. Be sure to go through the entire ingredient list if doing this coconut rice gluten free to ensure it meets with your specific gluten free dietary needs. In a dry (non-stick works best) pan on a low heat gently toast the coconut shred/ flakes and cashews for about 3-5 minutes and set aside. Chop the scallion, parsley and thyme, then wash the rice. There’s usually a lot of grit in rice, so it’s important that you always
It’s now time to put everything into the rice cooker and allow it to do it’s thing. First went in the washed rice, then the scallion, thyme, black pepper, parsley and salt. Give it a good mix, then go in with the dried fruit, toasted coconut and cashews. Top with the bird’s eye pepper and it’s important that you leave it whole so you get the flavors and not the raw heat. Break if you want the heat. Now go in with the coconut milk and it’s time to top with water according to your rice cooker’s instructions. There were 3 cups

It’s now time for the rice cooker to give us perfectly cooked coconut rice. I must mention that 10 minutes into cooking I did give it a stir to make sure all the heavy stuff didn’t gather at the bottom of the cooker. As you go through this recipe you’re saying to yourself..wow this is indeed a fool proof way of making coconut rice Chris doh lie! Such a delicious one pot dish, that’s vegetarian and gluten free as I mentioned above. Screaming with Caribbean flavors! Tip: After my rice cooker stopped cooking and went to the ‘keep warm’ setting I gave it five minutes then I unplugged it. I find that with the natural sugars from the rice and dried fruit (plus the coconut), it will have the tendency to start caramelizing the longer its on a heat setting. Be sure to use a fork to work the rice a bit so it goes a but fluffy in the rice cooker (when done cooking).

Bones, Breath & Bandhas: The Practice of Pratyahara What do the bones, breath and bandhas have in common? Each of these “B” words, when used as the object of meditation, has the capacity to move your senses from shallow to deep, and can induce what the yogis call pratyahara. Pratyahara is a state of being where your senses no longer seek nourishment or attention from the external environment; instead you feel content, peaceful and at home within yourself. Pratyahara locks you into the now and is a precursor to meditation, which requires steady, uninterrupted attention to the present moment and/or object of focus. In Patanjali’s 8 Limbs of Yoga, pratyahara is described as a transitional moment between the outer limbs (yamas, niyamas, asana, and pranayama) that help you develop ethical standards, healthy relationships and cleansing practices in order to purify the body/ heart/mind. After purification has occurred via diet, asana and pranayama, its easier to sense and feel into the subtle inner limbs (dharana, dhyana, and samadhi) that describe different stages of concentration and meditation. As we move from the extroverted energy of summer towards the quiet and dormant energy of winter, the autumn season is the space between these two extremes and is considered a transition time in Ayurveda, much like pratyahara is to the 8 Limbs of Yoga. The
autumn transition beckons you to slow down in order to ease into the winter gracefully and in good health. By practicing the 3 B’s on a regular basis this season, I hope you discover steadiness in form and contentment in the now.
around the pelvic bones; breathe into the bones of the pelvis. Sense and feel the shape of the head and neck of your femur, then move your awareness down the shaft of the femur, past the knee, into lower leg bones, ankles, and feet.
Step 1: Bone Meditation Sit in Virasana or alternative seated position to meditate. Relax your gaze and begin to visualize the shape of the all tiny bones in your head. Bring your awareness down to the lower jaw and release it away from the upper palate. Drop your attention down the length of your cervical spine, around the shoulder blades and into the arm bones. Let the arm bones release with gravity toward the earth, hands bones steady on your thighs. Inhale and bring your attention up the arm bones and along your collarbones. Follow the next breath down the chest bone (sternum) and soften the organs in between the ribs. Let your breath fill the bones of the ribs and feel them widen towards your arm bone on inhale; exhale and feel them soften toward the mid-line of the body. Bring your attention to the thoracic spine and walk your attention down to your lumbar curve. Pause and bring some breath and vitality to your lower back vertebrae. Continue sinking your attention down to the sacrum and tailbone; root your attention deep towards the earth. Follow your attention from the tailbone
Step 2: Breath Awareness Practice After completing the Bone Meditation, begin to observe the breath coming in through the nose, down into the body toward the lungs. Notice the end of your inhale and follow the breath back up the chest to the nose on exhale. Repeat for 3-5 minutes. Once you are comfortable with the breath orientation, begin to add a moment’s pause at the end of your inhale to help expand the ribs and chest, followed by a long steady exhale. Repeat for 3-5 minutes. The last step is to add an additional pause at the end of the exhale, and for a moment keep the breath out while you maintain relaxed and calm in the space between breaths. Repeat 3-5 minutes. Step 3: Bandhas (best to practice these under supervision of a teacher) The final step in the 3 B’s practice is to familiarize yourself with the bandhas. Bandhas are often described as seals, energy locks, or binds that fasten your attention deep in the psychomuscular energy body. When properly en-
gaged, bandhas may induce pratyhara; increase blood supply to the pelvic floor muscles, digestive organs and upper chest; purify or stimulate the chakras and energetic knots called grantis; and help maintain good alignment, which eventually clears the mind. Mula (root lock) Lift and weave the pelvic floor muscles together after exhale and you are creating the foundation of mula bandha. Relax the pelvic floor on inhale. Uddiyana (upward moving) To initiate uddiyana, exhale fully, pause, and spread the diaphragm muscle wide at the same time your navel moves deep towards the spine. After you feel the compression and lift of the organs, relax your effort, breathe and relax. Jalandhara (neck lock) After a comfortable inhalation, drop your chin down towards the base of the throat, lift the chest bone up to meet the chin and seal in prana, or the energy of the breath that is rising. Release your head back to neutral and observe the effects of jalandhara bandha. - My Yoga Online

European study finds raw milk boosts immunity, prevents colds and infections The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) claims that it’s basically a death sentence for you and your children. But raw milk consumption, according to a new study published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, can actually help prevent colds, viruses and respiratory tract infections (RTIs) from forming in kids, as opposed to commercially processed milk which provides little or no health benefits. A cohort of researchers, doctors and other medical professionals from across Europe investigated the effects of raw milk versus boiled farm-fresh milk and commercial processed milk as part of a larger investigatory project known as “PASTURE.” A group of women, roughly half of whom lived and worked on livestock farms in rural ral areas of mostly central ral Europe, were recruited ed to participate in the reesearch. Alll of the t women were their ere in the eir third trimesmesters of preggnancy at the he time of the study, and d detailedd consumption lifeon and lif festyle patterns, including ns, includi ing milk-drinking habits, ing hab bits, were carefully evaluatully evalu uated and compared. mpared. In total, 983 children ildren were re included in the he final data set, which revealed that at milk in its pure, raw, unobstructed ed form is superior in terms of immune-boosting -boosting nutrition. According ccording to the research, raw milk works a lot like breast milk in providing g protective, anti-infective health benefi efits to children. Compared to highly processed commercial milk, raw milk was found to help lower C-reactive protein levels, which are directly associated with inflammation. Raw milk, in other words, works against inflammation, while processed milk may help promote it due to its altered proteins. “The main finding of this analysis was an inverse association between consumption of unprocessed cow’s milk and rhinitis [cold or runny nose], RTI [respiratory tract infections], and otitis [ear infection],” wrote the authors. “The effect was strongest when cow’s milk was consumed raw; boiled farm milk exhibited an attenuated effect.”
Does ultra-heat-treated commercial milk promote respiratory and other health problems? Conversely, consumption of ultra-heat-
treated commercial milk, the most widely available milk product on the market, was not found to decrease levels of C-reactive protein, which appear to be a leading cause of disease. With fevers specifically, commercial milk was found to actually increase their prevalence compared to raw milk. Raw milk, on the other hand, is associated with a roughly 30 percent decrease in respiratory infections and fever, and could help babies and young children overcome these common ailments. Even minimally processed milk boiled directly on the farms was found to be beneficial, though much less so than true raw milk. “We are now not talking about fever and infecasthma and allergies, but fev tions in young children,” children stated Dr. Ton Baars, a professor and senior scian entist for milk e quality and qu animal anim welfare at the Rese Research Institute ea of Org Organic Agriculga ture in Germany, and d one of the lead leaad authors of thee study. “It means there is mee additional new add evidence that eviid raw w milk is a protective agent protte in infectious disin i eases easees in young children.” chilld Unlike in the Un U.S. U.S where irrational superstition tion and paranoia have landed raw milk in the th “dangerous” category, Europe is already Eur widely accepting of raw milk, and increasingly so. In many countries, raw milk vending machines are prevalent on busy city streets, providing quick and easy access to fresh milk from local farms. “In Europe, the consumption of unpasteurized milk has repeatedly correlated with protection against allergic disease,” wrote Moises Velasquez-Manoff in a piece for The New York Times late last year. “In America, 80 percent of the Amish studied by Dr. [Mark] Holbreich consume raw milk. In a study published earlier this year, Dr. [Bianca] Schaub’s group showed that European children who consumed farm milk had more of those regulatory T-cells, irrespective of whether they lived on farms. The higher the quantity of those cells, the less likely these children were to be given diagnoses of asthma.” - Natural News

Is ʻOrganic Readyʼ corn a solution for GMO cross-contamination? With increasing demand on the global market for foodstuffs free of genetically modified organisms, U.S. farmers face a serious economic dilemma. Even those who grow non-GMO conventional or organic crops are at risk for economic losses due to cross-contamination with genetically modified pollen. Corn shipments rejected by China, which were contaminated with the genetically modified Bt gene, have already cost American farmers over $4 billion since November 2013. Projections indicate that these losses will only gain momentum as more people wake up to the dangers of GMOs around the world. Outright GMO bans have already been implemented by several countries like France, Russia and China. Creative solutions are needed -- and soon. As luck would have it, plant breeder Frank Kutka has been working for nearly 15 years to develop a breed that has the ability to prevent cross-contamination in corn. The problem with GM corn Every year, U.S. farmers plant millions of acres of GM corn -- a staggering 93 percent of all corn crops in America are genetically
modified. For those who don’t take issue with GM food, this fact isn’t a cause for concern. But for farmers and consumers that would like to keep GMOs out of their fields -- and off their plates -- a whole slew of issues arise. One of the top concerns is how to avoid the cross-contamination of non-GMO and organic plants by their genetically modified brethren. Considering that each corn plant produces millions of pollen grains, which in turn are carried by the wind to pollinate other corn plants, it seems nearly impossible to keep non-GMO and organic corn crops safe. But through traditional breeding practices -- and thoughtful innovation -- people like Kutka are making a difference. Seeking modern solutions in ancient crops Finding inspiration in crops of the past, Kutka thinks he may have found the answer to cross-pollination issues in corn. Teosinte, an ancient relative of maize, has a pollen block trait (Ga2S) that makes it hard for GM pollen to enter corn silks. He’s also focusing on a trait found in popcorn (Ga1S), which has been used for decades to reduce the risk of
out-crossing in certain breeds. Beginning in 2001, Kutka has been working on pollen-blocking traits since his days as a graduate student at Cornell University. He chose the name “Organic Ready” for his new breed as a parody of Monsanto’s Roundup Ready GMO crops. Kutka hopes to release Organic Ready seed varieties in 2015. His breed won’t be the first pollen-blocking corn variety, however. Blue River Hybrids offers a corn stock by the name of PuraMaize. Tests on PuraMaize have found that harvests from 2012 and 2013 tested negative for GMOs at the threshold limit of 0.05 percent. PuraMaize is a patented trait that was licensed from Hogemeyer Hybrids in Nebraska. Kuta believes that farmers and corn breeders should have open access to Organic Ready corn. In order to prevent the seeds from being patented, they will be available to the public along with short publications in the Maize Genetics Cooperation Newsletter. “These seed releases are to encourage others to work with this trait and for organic farmers to grow as they wish,” he said. - Natural News
Key supplemental nutrients to strengthen the immune system Our immune system does a remarkable job of defending us against disease-causing microorganisms. Unfortunately, sometimes it is overrun by too much stress and too many microbes. Taking key supplemental nutrients can provide a major advantage for the immune system and allow it to effectively fend off larger amounts of stress and microbial debris. To strengthen the immune system, follow a low-sugar, nutrient-dense diet. This would include loads of non-starchy veggies, herbs, superfoods and healthy fats. Bone broth, medicinal mushrooms and sulfur-rich veggies such as garlic and onions offer powerful support.
balance, synchrony and precision necessary for long-term health.
Here are some key supplements to strengthen the integrity of the immune system.
Beta-glucan: Beta-glucan is a powerful immune-stimulating compound found in several mushrooms, yeasts and other foods. Betaglucan is a polysaccharide that is made up of multiple sugar molecules linked together. The major beta-glucan molecule is called beta-1,3-D glucan. Polysaccharides are a diverse class of macromolecules that have a high capacity for carrying biological information due to their large structural variability. Beta-glucans are known by scientists as “biological response modifiers” that bind to the surface of innate immune cells, which allows the cells to have better coordination in their attack. This reduces the tendency toward autoimmune reactions and hyperinflammatory activity when the body is under attack.
Omega-3 fatty acids: Omega-3 fatty acids cannot be synthesized in normal human metabolism and thus must be derived through diet. These fats play an important role in the cell membrane and the receptor sites that bind hormones and neurotransmitters. Supplementing with the long-chain EPA and DHA, the kinds of omega-3 we find in seafood, provides the body with incredible neurological and immunological support. These powerful long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids balance the omega 6:3 ratio and create an anti-inflammatory reaction in the body. This reaction helps calm the immune system and keep it firing with the
Gamma-linoleic acid: Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is a critical omega-6 fatty acid that can be found in borage oil, evening primrose oil, black current seed oil and hemp. Unlike other omega-6 fatty acids, GLA helps control inflammation throughout the body when incorporated into the membranes of immune cells. GLA has proven benefits in inflammatory diseases such as eczema, acne, asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. It is also shown to prevent the formation of atherosclerosis and cancer.
Probiotics: Our intestinal system and mucosal membranes (sinuses, respiratory tract, genitalia, etc.) are lined with billions of different bacterial colonies (We are a living bacterial hotel). Progenic or probiotic bacteria work in symbiosis with us (help promote life), whereas pathogenic bacteria create toxic waste and promote disease in our body. Probiotic supplementation has been shown to modulate the immune system and reduce whole-body inflammation. Supplementing with probiotics has also been shown to improve immune strength and help prevent the common cold and flu as well as other bacterial and viral conditions. Vitamin D3: Vitamin D deficiency is a current epidemic in our society today affecting 90% of our world’s population. According to vitamin D expert Michael Holick, MD, PhD, “We estimate that vitamin D deficiency is the most common medical condition in the world.” It is clear that most people are not getting enough healthy sun exposure. Vitamin D has been shown to suppress most elements of the adaptive (inflammation-mediated) immune system while inducing most elements of the innate immune system. Thus, D3 prevents and effectively treats autoimmune diseases by suppressing adaptive immunity while enhancing the first line of defense against invading microorganisms by strengthening innate immunity. - Natural News

Pain in the neck? Get help! Dr. Lydia Thurton ND BASc
Health Tips Are you addicted to your mobile phone? With increasing numbers of people staring down into tiny screens the incidences of head and neck pain have increased dramatically. Many people with pain accept the discomfort as a fact of life. They ignore the aches and assume that there is no solution. Thankfully, the Greater Toronto Area is blessed with a number of different practitioners that can banish your neck pain for good. Why not check them out? Many are covered by extended health care benefits. I am a proponent and practitioner of Chinese Medicine and acupuncture. Acupuncture needles penetrate deep in to muscle spasms releasing pain killing chemicals and
relaxing muscles that are wound up. I add in some electro stimulation, which doesn’t hurt, but provides a deep tissue massage. Speaking of massage, this hands-on approach can do wonders for muscles that are inflamed, or in knots. Getting your tense muscles to relax feels great for the mind and the body. One little known technique is myofascial release. Our body contains a thin membrane that covers our muscles like pantyhose do when you wear them on your legs. This membrane, called fascia, can cause your muscles to be in a chronic state of spasm. If you are getting regular massages and are not feeling better this modality is something to ask your therapist about. Chiropractic care involves manipulating the joints of the body, including the spine to achieve optimum alignment. A reliever of chronic pain, getting regular treatments can do wonders for your posture and comfort. Treatments are quick and easy to schedule into a busy life. Some chiropractors will recommend a large number of treatments over a long period of time. Avoid those. Seek for results oriented practitioners that are looking to get you better. Book treatments based on your progress and individual
case. One of my absolute favorite modalities, very few people are aware of, is osteopathy. If chiropractors adjust the joints, osteopaths adjust the soft tissue around the joints. Their assessments are great for hard to diagnose conditions. They are hands-on and people really see results. Oftentimes patients have coverage for osteopathy and do not even realize it! Osteopaths do unique manipulations of everything from muscles, to organs. Please consider these practitioners if you are experiencing unresolved pain. Finally, working with a great pain doctor has opened my eyes to the solutions for very hard to treat pain. Nerve blocks are the injection of anesthetic into muscle trigger points to provide temporary, but effective relief. Getting a pain doctor is also helpful for medication prescriptions. Many painkilling medications are addictive and can have side effects, so a knowledgeable physician will help reduce pain without having you become dependent. There is a new clinic in Mississauga, The Centre for Chronic Headache and Pain Management, accepting new patients. The doctor there is excellent. Wishing you pain free days ahead!
Dental pain - A vacation spoiler Dr. Matthew Weekes BSC DDS MTh DMin
Dental Health
A vacation is a highly anticipated event especially if it is one of the popular cruises. A lot of planning and time management is usually involved. At this time of year most of us wish to get away from the bitter cold and enjoy the tropical scenery of the Caribbean with its invigorating breeze, lovely beaches, fruit punch and so many niceties.
For some their expectation of a blissful time is spoiled by a sudden toothache or pain in the gums or cheeks. When a toothache occurs while on vacation in the air, sea or land the conditions for this sudden flare up exist. The tooth is like a simmering volcano that may erupt at any time. To prevent distressing dental events, before you leave, I recommend that you have a dental check-up preferably at least 2 weeks before you leave or any time before you leave. If you know that there are problems based on your own visual examination, and occasional symptoms, seek dental advice. Very often a simple dental treatment, which does not involve extraction, may be all that is needed to prevent a painful experience. Sometimes painful dental episodes may not be from the teeth but from infection of the gum. If you have not had your teeth
cleaned for at least a year, and your flossing is non-existent or irregular and if you notice your gums bleed, and there are deposits adhering to the teeth, the chances are that you are a candidate for a painful episode. A thorough cleaning would significantly lessen the chance of pain if no other conditions exist. There are some people that have reoccurring small red lesions on the gums and cheeks. They are usually very painful and of viral origin. Like canker sores they should go away within two weeks. Your dentist can prescribe medication to take care of the symptoms and restore comfort. Check out the condition of your dentures before you leave. Examine for cracks or severely worn down areas. Repairs can be done the same day. A fractured denture can cause mental grief.
Holiday weight loss Monique Bartlett Fitness It’s getting to be that time of year with parties, celebrations, eating, drinking and having fun with family and friends. With that in mind you need to remember that this is also the time of year you can add 5 to 10 pounds of weight on your body without even thinking about it. If you gain weight you will eventually have to think about losing weight. Losing weight requires a formula comprised of two things – watching calorie intake and burning those calories through exercise. Millions of dollars are made annually from the sales of diet products. Some may provide some temporary weight loss but it is usually in the form of water weight. It is usual to start gaining weight back when
you start to eat normal again. The restrictiveness of many diets is why they fail. You need to consider a lifestyle change if you want to lose the weight and keep it off. A reasonable weight loss goal is 1 or 2 pounds per week. That doesn’t seem like much but this is the best way for your body to successfully adjust to the changes you are making. Just think, if you only lose 1 pound a week for the next 3 months you will be at least 10 pounds lighter and that is significant progress. You never want to skip meals as that will actually slow down your metabolism and that means it is going to take more time to lose the weight. Plus, skipping meals can cause you to overeat at your next meal because your body feels as if it is starving. In order to keep the weight off you will need to exercise to help you to burn calories. Cardio is very popular and gets your entire body moving. You can do cardio at home to an exercise video. You can also join a class and get some personal instruction as part of that class. Walking or jogging is a great way to burn calories. Make this a family event. You and your family will enjoy the fresh air
and you can get your workout in without leaving them behind. It is a winning situation that you will all benefit from. A treadmill is another great type of exercise that you can consider. It will help you to walk, jog and run at a pace you are happy with. Some of them are very advanced so you can choose the level of incline, see your heart rate, and even see how many calories your exercise session has burned. Taking part in different sports can help you to successfully lose weight as well. These sports include those that really get your body moving. Consider basketball, volleyball, soccer, hockey, tennis and squash. Your focus will be on having fun rather than on losing weight and exercising. You can decide if you like individual sports or team sports better. If you feel that you aren’t very good at sports you may want to take some lessons first. Find something that you love to do and just enjoy doing it. Remember to see your doctor first before beginning any exercise program. You don’t want to start exercising too intensely and injure yourself and have to start the weight loss cycle all over again.

Power of sale property Stephen Mohammed Finance A Power of Sale is a more common method of retrieving funds than a Foreclosure on a defaulted mortgage. A Power of Sale allows the lender to sell the property if the borrower defaults on mortgage payments. The lender does not obtain possession of the property via transfer of title. The proceeds are forwarded to the lender to repay the mortgage loan. This process begins when the borrower is in default for at least fifteen days. Potential buyers are lead to believe that a property being sold in a Power of Sale is a good opportunity to purchase a home under market value. However, this marketing strategy can be misleading. It is true that a Power of Sale property is sold by the lender to recover the outstanding balance owed on the mortgage but the lender must list the property to be sold at market value. The process involves multiple appraisals and must be listed on the market for a reasonable period time to al-
low any potential buyers the opportunity to view the property and present an offer. If the property is sold for less than the outstanding balance, the lender can legally go after the borrower for the shortfall. If the property is sold for more than the outstanding balance the lender is obligated to return the funds to the borrower if there are no other debts outstanding against the property. A risk to a potential buyer is that most lenders have their own schedules of terms that must be included in any Agreement of Purchase and Sale. For example, they will not give any warranties with respect to the condition of the property and cannot include any chattels such as appliances or window coverings that may be present in the property as they have no claim of possession on those items. The schedule usually also includes a Right of Redemption by the owner which allows the borrower to bring the mortgage back into good standing and the buyer may not be in a position to pursue the closing of the deal. As a borrower or potential buyer you should consult with a lawyer to review any and all documents pertaining to the sale or purchase of a Power of Sale property. A Realtor can assist you in finding the right home but only a Lawyer can give you professional legal advice.
Putting the safety and security of Canadians first OTTAWA -- Today, Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander announced the coming into force of certain changes under the Faster Removal of Foreign Criminals Act that will further protect the safety and security of Canadians and the integrity of Canada’s immigration system. The Faster Removal of Foreign Criminals Act is expediting the removal of foreign criminals from Canada, while making it harder for those who pose a risk to Canadians to enter the country. The new changes will deter and prevent abuse of the immigration system and safeguard Canadians by: - Increasing the penalty for misrepresentation from a two- to a five-year period of
inadmissibility, as well as a five-year ban on applying for permanent resident status. This change will help deter fraudulent applications and sends a strong message to those who would abuse our system that giving false or misleading information has serious consequences. - Barring temporary entry to immediate family members of those who are inadmissible to Canada on the most serious grounds, including national security, human or international rights violations or organized criminality. This new measure will ensure that individuals who pose a serious danger are unable to use their relatives to expand their networks in Canada. - CIC

What is in house financing? Jelani Daniel Automotive Corner In-house financing, or ‘buy-here, pay-here’ options are quick and effective loans that cut the need for credit checks or third party lenders. Typically, they serve as a means to help qualified buyers obtain a vehicle with little to no down payment, even with poor credit. The process is simple and typically involves a dealership or brokerage that can work directly with the client to find them a suitable car at an affordable rate. To cut waiting time, the loan and collection of the amount owing are the sole responsibility of the brokerage or dealerships. The interest rate of the loan may reflect the liability that the lender has of issuing out and obtaining the outstanding balances. As with most financing options, the interest rate is not in effect unless you fail to make your payments, but unlike banking options, brokerages offer more flexible options to ensure a smoother payback period. Below are some pros and cons regarding in-house financing options to see if it is suitable for your lifestyle and budget. THE PROS: The pros of in-house financing include the ability to obtain a loan quickly
without the need for a third party approval, cutting the waiting time and making payback options more personal. on the i l Depending di h brokerage, there may be different arrangements that are more flexible than that of a bank or dealership, taking into account your workplace situation and projected income. The ability to pay back the loan is of key importance so your finances, current and projected income, as well as lifestyle costs will all be taken into consideration. Another positive aspect of in-house financing is that low credit scores or lacking credit are welcome. The rates are tailored to you personally and you can speak one-on-one to a broker, a dealer, or even go online to obtain financing. Overall, the positive aspects of in-house options include flexibility, lifestyle costs, as well as the ability to obtain financing with tarnished or poor credit. THE CONS: As with any type of financing, there are downsides. Since the loan often comes directly from the company itself, there may be higher liability, often resulting in a higher interest rate. The rate should always be reviewed by a broker or finance manager prior to signing any contract. OVERALL: In-house financing is a quick, flexible, and affordable solution that cuts the need for a third party. The main downside is the interest rate, but if all payments are made on time and if the agreement suits your budget, in-house financing is a reliable and quick solution to obtain a vehicle on short notice.
Doing time for 407ETRʼs crime Tammy Flores 407ETR Matters As you can imagine, I have gotten many messages over the past few years with respects to my articles on 407 ETR. Most are negative stories where the person is rehashing a billing nightmare this company is well known for. Lately, we have been hearing positive stories trickle in. Could it be that the company is finally listening? Time will tell. Brampton resident Larry Dupuis says that 407 ETR’s Ombudsman helped him clear up a billing nightmare. He says sometimes you have to go right to the top to get your issue resolved. Chris Arthurs found this to be true. Sometimes you have to do the time on the phone to get results. Mr. Arthurs couldn’t understand why he was being charged a $20 enforcement fee when he hadn’t been on the
highway for about 6 months. He called into a 407 ETR’s customer service representative and had a good news story because the company recognized equipment malfunction was to blame for his bill. Not only did the company credit the amount, but they gave him free KM’s due to this error. Mr. Arthurs makes the comment, “to think some people would just go ahead and pay this $20 fee for fear of collections, plate renewal denial, etc...” We shouldn’t have to live in fear of this company and as consumers we should do our part in voicing our concerns when things go wrong. It’s like doing the time for 407 ETR’s crime, but we have no choice. While it is a hassle to deal with companies like 407 ETR, it can prove to be beneficial to complain. Next time you have a billing issue with 407 ETR complain and let us know how it went. While it is great to hear more and more success stories, the company still seems to be inconsistent in how it is applying its “good graces”. Is there light at the end of the tunnel in the billing nightmare 407 ETR has caused? Time will tell, until then we await the Supreme Court case in January 2015 to see how the courts will deal with the company ignoring consumer protection laws for bankrupts.

Where did the weekend go? As of Monday, it’s on to a much fuller swing. The next week dishes up great stars, perhaps even the best of the month. Mercury, Venus, and the sun in Sagittarius keep you nicely sparked. The going is easy, the socializing delightful—what more could you ask for? Wednesday through Friday, you should feel gifted.
Mercury, Venus, and the Sagittarius sun loan you plenty of firepower. All three planets can boost your earnings; they’ll also prompt a spending spree. Relationship happiness and well-being are on the upswing this week too, especially when you allow each other extra legroom. The more independence and freedom you have, the better. Tuesday to Thursday, your stars are optimal.
As of Thursday, Mercury ditches your work sector to join Venus and the sun in your social sector. You can’t get away from the holiday onslaught, but for the most part you’ll delight in it. On Friday, you could be in the mood to slack off, but keep tabs on your money and the important stuff. From the middle to the end of next week, you’re hot stuff.
Five planets in your daily get-go sector will keep your days full, especially so through next weekend’s full moon. Even so, you’ll find you have the capacity to handle a lot more than you usually do. 12 scams of Christmas and use the funds, even before you have the chance to give the card as a gift, the Better Business Bureau claims.
Sherene Cole
CIP, CRM, CAIB, LLQP
Insurance Matters
Phony charities, pickpockets and puppies: Better Business Bureau reveals common holiday cons Christmas is quickly approaching, and although the holiday is associated with cheer and generosity, scammers are in full force, ready to take advantage of unwary individuals who can be easily duped. In the spirit of the popular holiday tune, Better Business Bureau wants people to be alert, which can save us from the negative repercussions of these frauds. On the twelfth day of Christmas, a scammer gave to me: 12 - Malware e-cards: During the holidays, people love to spread the cheer, sometimes in the form of holiday e-cards. But viruses and malware often travel in e-mail attachments or links. Delete e-mails from people whose names you don’t recognize. It is better to take caution than to fall victim to a corruptive virus. 11 - Stranded grandkids: Family is important, especially around the holidays. Scammers, however, can take advantage of this, utilizing what the Better Business Bureau characterizes as the “classic grandparent scam.” If someone calls or sends an email pretending to be a grandchild, relative or friend, claiming they were robbed or harmed overseas, asking for money, check to verify that it is true before taking action. 10 - Counterfeit gifts: Everybody likes a good deal. Be careful while holiday shopping this year, especially online. Counterfeit transactions are illegal and harmful for brand owners and can leave customers dissatisfied. Make sure that you purchase goods from a credible merchant. 9 - Pockets picked: Cold weather means bundling up. But with some of the extra padding of a puffy coat, we may not notice pickpockets who are willing to take advantage of the situation. While out and about this holiday season, keep your purse or wallet secure. Experienced thieves are waiting for the perfect moment to snatch up any valuables. 8 - Stolen gift cards: Gift cards can be the perfect gift: easy to buy and are usually a big hit with recipients. However, make sure that you are purchasing gift cards from a reputable dealer. Scammers can sell you a card
7 - Fake coupons: Buying so many gifts during the holiday season, it is no surprise that many look to coupons to save a little cash, but use caution when downloading coupons. A retailer’s website is the best place to find coupons, and be wary particularly if a website asks for personal information. 6 - Santa scammers: Receiving a letter from Santa Claus can be the highlight of the Christmas season for a young child, but these websites could put you at risk for identity theft. Before entering any personal information, verify that the site is real, and not just gathering data to commit fraud. 5 - Fake charities: The Christmas season is about generosity, and many charities thrive on end-of-the-year giving as part of their annual income. Scammers set up fake charities that have names that often sound legitimate or are similar to popular charities. Verify the organization before you make a charitable donation this Christmas. 4 - Bogus websites: For those who do not know what to look for, it can be almost impossible to differentiate a real website from a bogus one. It is easy for a hacker to mimic a real website. A red flag is if a website reads “http” in the address bar instead of the more secure “https.” Additionally, if contact information is not listed, or they are asking for a payment by wire or money card, look for verification that the website is not a fraud. 3 - Travel scams: Be cautious when booking travel through an advertisement online, and never wire money to someone you do not know. Using trusted travel agencies or websites recommended by friends and family members can ensure that you will not fall victim to travel scams. 2 - Phony loves: Everyone wants someone special to share a kiss under the mistletoe or as the ball drops on New Year’s. But for those looking for love online, the holidays are a prime time for scams. Be careful when finding an online sweetheart, especially with an online match that gets cozy too fast and asks for money, the Better Business Bureau warns. And a totally fictitious puppy: There may be no better gift than a cute and cuddly puppy, but be careful when buying a pet online. Scammers take advantage of those who want to give puppies for the holidays. Sometimes these puppies can come from puppy mills, and could have serious health problems. Other scams could involve paying for the pet online, but never receiving the puppy because it was all a scam. If you decide to give man’s best friend for Christmas, find a reputable breeder or local rescue league to avoid being burdened by an online con.

Responsibility and choices... the magic words Colleen Lindberg Business Development Have you ever had that feeling in life where you are like... I didn’t choose this? Then you start to really reflect back on the steps that have occurred, the small decisions that seemed minor at the time now have evolved into this big thing, or maybe it evolved into a mess or it’s even taken you completely off the right path and you didn’t even realize it until this very moment. It’s really crazy to think about those small decisions making such a big impact in our lives, but they do! So the real question now comes down to, what do you want life to look like and are your actions (i.e.; choices) in alignment with what you really want? Let’s talk about how this is showing up currently in my life.... I have this dream to fit into my skinny jeans, so you would think that based on this goal my choices would now be in alignment with this, like I would be hitting the gym five days a week and attending my two Pilates classes a week, eating up all the organic, fresh vegetables in my fridge and remov-
ing the gluten from my nutritional habits as I have an intolerance which makes me gain weight when I eat it, drinking a lot of water and flushing my body, getting enough sleep and overall releasing stress. This would be the ideal situation and my discipline would on track and intact. Now let’s talk about the awesome choices I am making currently.. like last week... I ate Chinese food for lunch, I only got to my two Pilates classes this week (so no other workouts), threw out some food in my fridge because it went bad from lack of eating it, I am averaging four hours of sleep a night and my water intake is barely not to mention high stress and a lot of bread eating... seriously! So I ask myself how do I ever expect to get to my goal with all this behavior that is not in alignment with my wanting result? Why am I not making the choices that I know will get me there? Really... ask yourself this. Is it because of fear? The fear of really achieving and attaining it? If your goal is in your business and let’s say it’s to increase revenue by 20% this year, then you would think that all your actions will be targeting to achieving this goal. I know that there are some of us that actually have the fear of success, which of course would inhibit us from achieving the goal because we self-sabotage ourselves so we don’t achieve it. I say STOP this nonsense of fear, unworthiness, I am not enough mentality
and let’s just really push ourselves and see what happens. What if we actually get what we want? What if we actually gain more confidence and feel awesome about ourselves? Hmm... what if. So I have been off gluten for the last 5 days (limiting grains too as my colon needs some love), I worked out already twice this week (it’s Wednesday), I slept 8 hours last night (Wow I know), I have a full water bottle in front of me that I am downing, I am taking my vitamins and probiotics and mostly... I am eating what’s in my fridge... all that awesome organic food!
Yah.... :) So in a previous article I wrote about owning it, which is my newest thing... I really believe if people actually did own it, stood in who they are, expressed how they felt and did things for themselves (not in a selfish way but in a self-empowered fashion) the world would be so awesome, with happy, confident people. Of course I am not naive enough to believe that Poof the world issues would be solved... but really wouldn’t we be so much closer? #ownit “
