Yeah, the sun has made an appearance, the flip flops are out, my boys have already had a dip in the sea. I love this time of year knowing Summer is on its way. The crabbing season will be starting again and our roads and beaches will start to fill out by people visiting our amazing County. Holidaying is never the same for us since we moved as we are spoilt for choice with beautiful beaches, walks and areas of beauty but a weekend away is always a treat in a different part of the county. Well have we got a competition for you! Thanks to Hendra Holiday Park, Newquay, an incredible prize has been offered for a weekend break (see inside front cover).

Care of your pelvic floor Looking after your pelvic floor is essential during pregnancy, following the birth of your baby, and throughout the rest of your life. Keeping your muscles strong and learning how to both contract and relax them may help to reduce damage during labour. Toning up after the birth will help avoid leakage from your bladder or bowel. In the longer term your exercises can safeguard against incontinence, haemorrhoids or prolapse. So start now! The pelvic floor muscles are deep inside your pelvis. They form a sling suspended from four bony points on the pelvis. Layers of connective tissue and muscle run from the pubic bone to the tail bone, with some added outer muscles attaching to your sitz or ‘sitting bones’. These muscles pass either side of the urethra, vagina and anus, contributing to their closure when not in use. A simple way to ‘locate’ these muscles is to sit on a chair or gym ball. Place your hands under your bottom and feel the weight of your ‘sitting bones’. Your tail bone sits at the base of your spine at the top of the crease of your buttocks. The pubic bone is the bony joint in between the tops of your legs. Breathe in and visualise the four bony points extend away from each other, then as you breathe out draw them in towards each other. It is normal for your lower abdomen to draw in gently at the same time. Alternatively imagine trying to stop a flow of urine. Practice long slow contractions as well as fast ones. Always relax fully in between. Do not practice when you are actually passing urine as this can lead to not emptying properly.

The Happy Birth Project Tots About spoke to Lizzie a midwife at the Royal Cornwall Hospital and founding member of the ‘Happy Birth Project’, a fundraising initiative started by herself and small group of colleagues to create a more welcoming environment within maternity for pregnant women and their families. Sadly at the moment they don’t have a ‘home from home’ unit at the hospital but they are happy to say they have received government funding for a new birth centre with four birth pool rooms! Work should commence in the Summer this year. Although these facilities aren’t yet available, if you are expecting a baby there are a few simple things you can do to create the best ‘birth space’ for you, whether you are coming into hospital, going to a birth centre, or staying at home. Labour relies on the hormone OXYTOCIN. This is the hormone of love, the best environment to produce lots of oxytocin is one that is dark, quiet and one which you feel most relaxed. Lizzie says “Think about all your senses and how you will make them work for you to help labour progress”. “Lighting – dimmed lights will help with Oxytocin production, wherever you are, turn off the main lights and use lamps to create soft lighting, in hospital we now have mood lighting which has a colour changing mode, you can also use fairy lights or battery powered candles to create a lovely ambience.
Smell – If you are at home you will be surrounded by familiar smells but you could use aromatherapy oils in a diffuser or on some cotton wool to help with relaxation, some oils are also thought to help labour to progress or to have other positive effects (like reducing nausea). If you are coming to hospital bring your own pillow or throw, that smells like home. Sound – make a birth playlist of music that reminds you of happy times or relaxes you, play from your phone, get portable speakers or put onto a CD (we have CD players in every birth room), or you could just put on the radio. Lastly consider your privacy, turn off your phone, draw the curtains/blinds and, in hospital, let your midwife know you value a quiet space, she can ask the other staff to be extra respectful of this. Interruptions from people coming in unannounced or a ringing phone will trigger adrenaline which slows labour. Remember, the room you labour in is yours for as long as you need it, you can even move furniture if you want to! Make sure everyone present (midwives and birth partners) are aware of your wishes for the birth environment, they need to help create and be in charge of ‘guarding’ your birth space, ensuring it is adjusted to meet your needs. You will be concentrating on having your baby! If you want to meet some of our midwives and support the project come along to our next fundraising event in July 2016. Just ‘like’ us on Facebook for updates.

Baby Sensory’s multi-award winning classes, designed for babies from birth to 13 months, promise to introduce your baby to a world of sensory exploration and are now running in mid Cornwall. Baby Sensory offers a place where the two of you can relax, have fun and share in each other’s delight. It is a magical world, full of glowing balls, light shows, puppets, bubbles, rainbows, petals, signing and songs. There are some beautifully themed classes which will have you dancing in the snow or diving under the waves, trekking through a rainforest and singing the shanties of sea pirates. Baby Sensory work closely with the children’s charity Tommy’s and is planning a special ‘Super Hero’ themed session in June with funds going to Tommy’s. The last event raised £185,000 and they have great plans to exceed that this year. Baby Sensory have a vast wealth of equipment and songs - many unique to them - and you’ll never experience the same lesson twice. What also makes the programme so groundbreaking is that
every element has been meticulously designed with your baby’s development in mind. The research and knowledge is shared with regular explanations as to how each activity aims to enhance your baby’s learning and development. The first year of your baby’s life is one of the most important, when, soon after birth, the brain starts creating two million new connections every second! Baby Sensory believe that understanding more about your child’s development will really enhance what’s already a very special time. The classes run in Truro, Falmouth and Newquay and you can join at any point from baby’s birth. It also offers a great opportunity to forge friendships as the weeks go on, sharing tips and experiences at a time when you’ll probably really appreciate the support. For more, visit www.babysensory.com and go to ‘Find a Class’, visit the Baby Sensory Truro Falmouth and Newquay Facebook page or email truro@babysensory.co.uk

The best kept classroom and the richest cupboard are roofed only by the sky. Margaret McMillan (c1925)
Mathematics is probably one of the words that many of us quiver at when we hear it; however Numbers Nursery is about making early year’s mathematics fun through play. Funded by the Big Lottery, ‘Numbers Nursery' free outdoor playgroups in three locations - Penzance, Redruth and St Austell . The Numbers Nursery playgroups are focussed on nurturing mathematical experiences in outdoor environments linked to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
Through the Numbers Nursery philosophy, children will be better prepared for the mathematical curriculum in school. And through the opportunities provided with outdoor play, adventure, and exploration; children will have a better understanding of their world, and develop healthy and active lifestyles For more information, please visit www.numbersnursery.co.uk or contact Jane Jiwa on 01209 212579 jane@numbersnursery.co.uk

After falling in love with the wonders of hemp Emma decided she would one day launch her own affordable clothing range for children and after a couple of years of research the Poco Rosso range is here. Poco Rosso are essentials for your kid’s wardrobe and are very versatile. You can mix and match the collection with the array of funky colours: dark green, red, grey, cobalt blue. Emma says, “I am so excited about the launch and that this new range gives parents an affordable choice of organic clothing for their kids. It’s very important to me as a mum too that the clothes are fun as well as long lasting and are not expensive as children grow so quickly.” Emma is passionate about bringing supermarket priced clothing to parents – however her range is natural and chemical free. So no nasties next to your kids skin. Did you know that hemp is the greenest material to use for fabric as it requires no herbicides and no pesticides to grow? BohoHemp was born out of a search for stylish eco-friendly clothing in the UK and Poco Rosso is the new children’s organic cotton and hemp range. The Poco Rosso range is for ages 3 to 4, 5 to 6 and 7 to 8 For more details about the range visit the website: www.bohohemp.com

Children’s Playzone a great success in local church
In 2014 the Penlee Cluster, a group of four churches in the Penzance area, applied to the Bishop's Den for funding to sponsor a Pop Up Soft play shop in Penzance to determine a need for a children’s playzone. They were then able to purchase soft play equipment to develop an under 5’s play area in St. John’s church in Penzance, an area with significant social need. The fund helped to pump prime grant searching for a part time play worker and by May 2014 PZ@PZ was opening for 6 hours a week, and linking with community events and holiday clubs.
Free vouchers to the play zone are distributed to local schools as part of their values and virtues projects, to the Food bank and to the Women's Refuge. Families who have children with additional needs and lots of families for whom English is a second language feel this space is important for them. A weekly "Who let the dads out" session encourages men to play with their children and has also been used by the courts as a good place for some fathers to have access to their children. A number of community groups and local councilors have helped to fund some of these sessions and free places. For more information please contact: Molly Blewett Playzone Supervisor 07341 830277 Soft Play Area in Penzance
Since October 2015 the second stage of PZ@PZ has been constructed offering play facilities to youngsters of primary age. This is open 7 days a week and for at least two sessions each day as well as parties and seasonal community events. Volunteers from across Cluster churches and paid staff run the sessions. Placements for students and work experience opportunities have also been provided. PZ@PZ is well used by a wide range of the local community, families across Penwith area and holidaymakers. As children play safely there are lots of opportunities for people to talk and share stories. There is a growing sense of community and sense of belonging.

Sepsis (Septicaemia/Blood Poisoning) Sepsis has hit the headlines recently with many tragic cases being reported. The key to sepsis is picking up on the serious signs of illness as early as possible and escalating your concern. Cornwall Resus are on hand to offer some expert advice on how to recognise if your baby or child is showing signs of sepsis or serious illness. What is Sepsis? Also known as Septicaemia or Blood Poisoning, Sepsis is when your body’s response to infection goes wrong and begins to injure its own tissues and organs. It affects about 10,000 children every year in the UK. How do I spot it? Sepsis could happen as a result of any infection, if your child is unwell with either a fever or a very low temperature (or has had a fever in the last 24 hours) then think about Sepsis. Information taken from www.sepsistrust.org Please visit this website for a wealth of information about Sepsis
There is no one sign for sepsis. Things to look for… Any child who: • Feels abnormally cold to touch. • Looks mottled, bluish, or has very pale skin. • Has a rash that does not fade when you press it. • Is breathing very fast. • Has a ‘fit’ or convulsion. • Is very lethargic or difficult to wake up. Might be critically ill. One or more of these? Speak to a Doctor urgently: Call 999 and say you are worried about sepsis.
A child under 5 who: • Is not feeding. • Is vomiting repeatedly. • Hasn’t had a wee or wet nappy for 12 hours. Might have Sepsis. One or more of these? Speak to a Doctor and say you are worried about sepsis.
