Helping you get back on track
I hope you have had an amazing Summer, I feel like it has lasted for months with such incredible weather. My little man has now started Big School and like me many of you are adjusting to a new routine with not having any children at home. Some of you will just be starting a new journey with starting a preschool/nursery setting and many of you starting the whole journey with your new borns, congratulations if that is you and good luck to everyone in this new term. This issue is full with great editorials on eye health, healthy eating, and being safe as the dark nights start to pull in. There are more businesses than ever now advertising their products and services, everything bump to 5 especially photographers on page 6. Xmas is around the corner so why not book a photoshhot for the perfect gift or look out for the Xmas stocking next to adverts as a guide to where to shop. Please keep mentioning Tots About to advertisers, sign up for the enewsletter and spread the word of this ultimate guide for bump to 5.

Baking your bun You would expect your ‘bun in the oven’ to be cooked after nine months wouldn’t you? However did you know that your little bun probably needs a few more months baking time instead? Your little baby is tucked up, warm and snug in subtropical temperatures inside you for around nine months. They are rocked and swayed with your every move, listening to the rhythmical drumming of your heart and the loud swooshing of your blood flowing around them, whilst feeling the comforting closeness of your womb. Suddenly this all changes as they get thrust into the bright lights of the world, laid flat on their backs, and expected to fit into our human lives. You can see how that might be a bit of a shock!
Hello readers! I’m Evony Lynch, freelance midwife and Chief Tea-Drinker at MamaCafe
In order to reduce that shock some baby experts have suggested that after birth, replicating the womb like environment can help your baby to get accustomed to the world in a gentler way. As if it’s an extra trimester of pregnancy. Short of popping them back in, how can you do this? •
Sling wearing is an effective way to create that constant rocking and closeness felt before birth
•
Skin to skin time whenever they are unsettled helps bonding and enables them to be close to your heartbeat
•
Learning to safely swaddle can really help your baby feel secure in their bed, just as they felt those secure boundaries around them in your womb
•
Safely co sleeping for breastfeeding mums
•
Using white noise CD for babies can replicate the sounds inside your tummy
It’s hard work but we hope our tips help you with your new little bun! Find out more about our antenatal and postnatal classes online at www.mamacafe.co.uk and get more hot tips for your bun in the oven and baby bun.

Very young children need to learn about traffic and understand that it can be dangerous. Research shows that young children can't judge how fast vehicles are going or how far away they are. Talking about traffic with your child when you're out and about is one of the best ways for them to learn.
Be Streetwise
Every week, on average 9 children under the age of 6 are killed or seriously injured on Great Britain’s roads. But it’s still important for children to be outside. Parents and carers play a vital part in teaching children how to cross the road safely. Even from a young age it's essential to set a good example and to help your child understand why we need to stop, look and listen before stepping onto a road. • Always explain to your child why they need to stop, look and listen when crossing the road • Talk about safer places to cross and how it's harder to see where there are parked cars, junctions, bends or the brow of a hill • Help your child to learn the names of the different crossings, such as zebras, puffins, toucans & pelicans
17th-23rd Nov 2014 Road Safety Week is all about schools, organisations and communities taking action to promote road safety and help save lives.
WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN
• Holding hands with your child, show them how to stop at the kerb, look all around and listen for traffic
Hi-Viz mini vest, lightweight, highly visible in daylight as well as after sunset. Great as the nights start to pull in
• Don’t use your mobile phone while crossing the road
Get you little one to colour in the picture, take a photo and put it up on fb look out tots about. Entries in by 30th Nov
• When there is no traffic coming, walk straight across (not diagonally) and keep looking and listening

Clubs & Classes Clubs & Classes Clubs & Classes Clubs & Classes Cornwall Healthy Weight has been running since April 2012. We pride ourselves on running professional, fun, friendly and educational programmes for people all over Cornwall.
for 4 to 7 year olds who are above a healthy weight. It is essential that at least one parent/guardian attends this programme with your children, but all family members are invited and encouraged to attend, together.
We are part of Cornwall Health Promotion Service, offering support for both individuals and groups. Our aim is to improve the health and wellbeing of the population of Cornwall by actively promoting and supporting increased physical activity, healthy eating and effective weight management with individuals of all ages.
Eating well in pregnancy, as well as staying active, are the most important things you can do to give your baby the best start in life. It will help your baby develop and grow and can help you feel your best too. Also, keeping active and fit during pregnancy will make it easier for you to adapt to your changing shape and weight gain. It will also help you cope with labour and to get back into shape after the birth.
All the activities we deliver are planned and tailored to suit you and your family and we aim to adapt our sessions to fit your needs, so if you are worried about anything at all or if there is something specific you would like us to cover, please let us know in advance.
There is a growing body of research to suggest that weight management in pregnancy for overweight and obese women can be beneficial and reduce the risk of complications. However, excessive dieting is not recommended as it may be harmful.

Eye health
As an orthoptist, I am a specialist in testing the vision of very young children and babies, providing a lead role in the primary screening of children aged 4-5yrs, and in the identification, measurement and treatment of squint (“wandering eye”) and amblyopia (“lazy eye”). There are orthoptic clinics throughout the county, at West Cornwall Hospital (Penzance), Camborne/Redruth, Helston, Falmouth, Newquay, Bodmin and St Austell hospitals. We also have two dedicated school vision screening technicians who visit all primary schools in the county during the Reception year to test vision and refer to the hospital orthoptist if necessary.
the benefit to their vision! In the case of amblyopia (“lazy eye”), we also often recommend and supervise occlusion therapy, where a child wears a “patch” over the “good” eye to encourage the “lazy eye” to work and improve vision. If you are concerned about your child/baby’s eyes, your health visitor or family doctor can arrange referral to the orthoptist.
Allison Osborne, Senior Orthoptist with the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, based at the Eye Unit at Trelikse Hospital, Truro.
If you notice that your baby has an intermittent squint or wandering eye, this may in fact be quite normal, as long as he/she is under 3 months of age! Very young babies do take time to develop proper co-ordination of their eye movement muscles and focus, so their eyes may appear to be quite out of alignment occasionally, however a constant squint at any age requires further assessment, as does an intermittent squint in an older baby or child. Other signs that there may be an eye problem are “wobbly” eyes (nystagmus), difficulties with hand-eye co-ordination, or apparent inability to see correctly such as holding books close to the face. Treatment of visual difficulties includes glasses wear: prescription of glasses is done after testing with our specialist paediatric optician. Glasses are sometimes given to small babies and very young children, and it is quite surprising how well even the smallest child will wear their glasses once they appreciate

Head Injuries Head Injuries and bumps to the head can be common in little ones, especially when they start to toddle about. Cornwall Resus are on hand to offer some expert advice on what to do if your child sustains a Head Injury. Help your child to sit down or rest. Apply a cold compress to the area; it is common to see a swollen bump. Child friendly compresses or Ice packs are perfect for this, or you can use a cold wet flannel or towel. You can use some frozen vegetables or ice but make sure you wrap in a clean tea towel or flannel first to make more comfortable. Never place ice directly on the skin as it can cause pain. Apply for up to 20 minutes. Check that the skin is not red or pink from the compress after 5 minutes, and then re-apply as necessary. This will reduce the external swelling and relieve pain.
Head Injuries can sometimes also cause internal injury so it is really important to stay with your child and observe for any signs of concussion. These include; • Vomiting • Loss of consciousness • Increased drowsiness or tiredness • Dizziness • Blurred vision • Headache If any of these signs are present you should seek medical attention. Babies and Children won’t always be able to communicate pain or changes in vision so if they are difficult to settle or you are worried about them - it is best to seek medical attention. If your child vomits, loses consciousness or you are unsure how bad the injury is then always seek urgent medical attention. Cornwall Resus are experts in Baby & Child First Aid and Life Saving training.
