Feeding your baby Hello readers! I’m Evony, midwife, doula and Chief Tea-Drinker at MamaCafe. Sometime during pregnancy you may start to think about how you’re going to feed your baby when they’re born. For some mums the decision is easy and was probably made long before they got pregnant. For others it might be a bit trickier. Well-meaning family and friends can tell you their stories and experiences sometimes good and sometimes not so good. But ultimately it’s up to you to decide what feels right. Your midwife will give you a booklet with your notes all about feeding your new baby.

If you choose to bottle-feed then instructions are included inside the booklet too. There are lots of different types of bottles, sterilisers and milk so it’s probably a good idea to check them out before your baby arrives. Whatever you choose your baby will benefit from a gentle welcome and skin to skin time with mum and dad. It’s sooo good for all babies, helping to regulate their temperature, heartbeat and breathing. Your decision doesn’t have to be set in stone and you can explore your options and change your mind too. Your midwife and health visitor are there to give you lots of support. Want to know more about feeding? Check out our new ‘Feeding your New Baby Class’ on the Mamacafe website. That’s all for this time folks!

If you choose to breastfeed it’s a good idea to find out how it all works; what makes it easier and what makes it harder. Having an understanding of holding and attaching your baby can make a big difference. There are lots of free support groups run by breastfeeding mums, all over Cornwall, and they’re listed in the booklet. They love to meet you in pregnancy too so that you can start to get prepared.

Top ten tips for choosing the right childcare setting for you and your children There comes a time after having a baby that many of us need to think about returning to work to pay the bills. There are many different childcare options available and although daunting at first, these top ten tips from the Department for Education should help you work out the best option or options for you.

Are the staff and children talking and playing together and are the children inspired and encouraged to ask questions?

What type of care is best for you and your child? e.g., 'group care' is normally with a team of staff working with a number of children. Childminders work at home and care for a smaller number of children.

Do the children have the chance to take part in a range of different activities? Does the location have plenty of space inside and outside - how easy is it for children to move freely between the two? Think about safety - do they have finger guards on doors? Do they have visitor control systems in use? How do they report incidents to parents? Ask to see the written safeguarding policy - every group childcare provider should have one.

4

Look at the staffing levels. A nursery or children's centre should have at least one member of staff for every eight children aged between three and five-years-old, and there should be a key person with special responsibility for your child. A childminder could be caring for up to six children under eight.

Will you see your child's paintings and other work - how will the staff talk to you about what and how your child is learning?

You should always visit the nursery, childminder or pre-school when it is in full flow, and take your child with you to see what they think.

Is there a healthy, balanced diet on offer? Ask about how they manage children's dietary requirements.

How does the nursery, preschool or childminder deal with misbehaviour, or homesickness? Again, ask to see the written policy.

Do staff have relevant qualifications? Did you know that quality is generally better in childcare settings where the staff have qualifications, particularly if at least one member of staff involved with the children is an early years graduate?

Putting play on the map By Claire McHugh from Playmapp

Spring is in the air and it’s a great time of year to get outside! And it’s never been easier to find great places to play, thanks to the new playground-finder website www.playmapp.co.uk. After struggling to find play areas after having her own children, mum of twins Claire created Playmapp, to help everyone find free places to play, wherever they are – and with over 300 play areas in Cornwall featured, there are plenty to explore! Playmapp has put together a guide of 10 great play areas in West Cornwall to get you started...

Kimberley Park, Falmouth Park Crescent, Falmouth, TR11 2DL

Folly Field, Marazion West End, Marazion, TR17 0EG

There is a really exciting new playground in Kimberley Park, made out of natural materials. It features a scramble net, tangle logs and wonky steps leading up to a lighthouse tower, a challenging spinning net, wobbly belt seesaw, high tower slide, treehouse, sand play ‘dock’ with boats, jetties, bucket cranes and sand play hut, agility trail, toddler, flat and basket swings and plenty more! Set within 7 acres of gardens, plenty of space for picnics and toilets on site.

A large playground with a seaview, let your little ones burn off steam on the play train at Folly Field! With multiactivity units for climbing and sliding, a zip wire and plenty of picnic benches it’s a great spot to have your lunch!

Land’s End Play Area Land’s End, TR19 7AA Visit the most westerly play area in mainland England! Nautical themed play area made from wood with sand base (known as the ‘wreckreation area’) with play boat featuring climbing nets, lookout tower and spiral tunnel slide, sand pit, rocker and play house. Open only during exhibition hours.
