Hosting their tenth Sea Salts and Sail festival from the 11th to 13th July, Mousehole is also home to the Mousehole Cat. This is an action packed weekend and perfect for toddlers and grandparents alike. From reenacting Cornish maritime history and 18th century classic yacht sailing to learning a few knots or ‘Corker’ self builds, this 500 year old beautiful fishing village is the place to visit and have fun. The historic vessels arrive Friday afternoon and over the next three days, re-create impressive ‘parades of sail’ around the bay, sights that stir the hearts of even the most hardened land lubber. In the harbour, there's stalls selling a variety of gifts and food, including smoked fish and lobster pot makers. On the beach, children's activities will include art, poetry, singing and knot tying as well as the chance to make your own ‘Corker’ yacht to sail across the harbour. On a typical day, the harbour, quay and beaches are packed with excited families awed by the sights and sounds; eating, drinking, dancing, laughing, and taking pictures. It brings together all age groups, educating and inspiring a new generation in a fun and hands-on way. For further information, please see www.seasalts.co.uk

In this issue I’m talking birth partners. Whether it’s your partner, husband, mum or friend, your birth partner is usually a vital part of your birth experience. Pass this on for them to read… Their role is to be that strength and support during the most incredible moment in your life. They don’t have to be an expert; simple touch and loving words is perhaps all you need.

Hello readers! I’m Evony Lynch, freelance midwife and Chief Tea-Drinker at MamaCafe

Helping to pack the birth bag or at least know what’s in there and where is a good start. They don’t want to be scrabbling around for that flannel at 2am. Get them to read and understand your birth plan. In the middle of those waves of contractions they will be the one passing on your wishes. They don’t have to be an expert, just understand what choices you want to make about your care, or pain relief. A good birth partner needs to take care of themselves too. Get them to pack a bag with nourishing treats and a flask of coffee. What can a birth partner do? •

Go for a walk together. Great for early labour.

Simple massage to aid relaxation can be shown by the midwife.

Offering sips of water and mopping your brow. A cool wet flannel can feel gorgeous.

Help maintain steady breathing by breathing with you.

Give skin to skin to your baby if you are unable to.

If you can get to an antenatal class together they may feel a little more prepared for the experience of a lifetime. Happy Birthing! Pop into MamaCafe at The Melting Pot in Redruth or online at www.mamacafe.org.uk for more articles and tips.

2VWHRSDWK\ IRU QHZERUQV DQG ROGHU EDELHV Your birth story is unique. Subtle events within the processes of labour shape your birth experience. Whether joyful or fraught, recounting the birth story can be a profoundly healing experience while communicating the subtle shifts in the labouring process that describe for the Osteopath the impact of birth on mother and baby. Your birth story is part of the healing process interwoven with gentle treatment to resolve physical and sometimes emotional trauma surrounding birth. Treating the new-born at birth or soon after is an immense privilege. Gentle corrective Osteopathic techniques to resolve mechanical strains from labour can enable the soft ‘gel’ like bones of the new-born to return to their natural position and permit strains within neck and base of the skull to be released so that baby can turn its head fully and comfortably. The ‘thinking, knowing, seeing fingers’ of Osteopathic touch* offer techniques to release the muscles of tongue and throat area so the baby with suckling difficulty may open their mouth fully, latch effectively, suckle efficiently and breathe comfortably. The fascinating thing is that your baby’s head is designed for birth. The bones at the base of the skull are formed in cartilage resilient to protect structures of the brain during birth. The bones forming the shape of the head develop in membrane and are designed to overlap during the compressive strains of labour. Nature’s way of permitting birth and safeguarding the passage of the baby. It is understood by Osteopaths that the resiliency and pliancy of the bones of the infant’s head correspondingly help the labour process, positioning and guiding but also influence timing too. The powerful suckle of the new-born stimulates the resolution of some strains quite naturally, but where strains causing restriction or overlapping of bones of the head persists, prolonged crying and persistent wakefulness can sometimes occur. It is helpful to assist the little bones back into their correct position for optimal function and restoring well-being. Persistent strains in the head can occasionally, lead to distortion and shape change in the head, a condition termed ‘plagiocephaly’ where a ‘flat spot’ in the skull develops and baby may tend to lie with its head always to one

side. Tummy time is important, up to one hour per day, in little chunks, whether on your lap, lying on your chest, in the bath, or on the play mat. Gentle corrective work of an Osteopath permits full resolution of this troubling condition. Check out the Sleepcurve activity mat designed by an Osteopath so your baby is not lying on a flat surface: www.sleepcurve.com. Remember Osteopaths work for mums and babies together to restore function and permit health. An exhausted mum with bruised pelvis following difficult labour needs specialist care. It is essential that mum is well, so I offer a special ‘Mum and Baby’ rate, so mum gets a check-up too! *Dr WG Sutherland, founder of Cranial Osteopathy from ‘The Cranial Bowl’, 1939

Tots About have been talking to Porthleven Cycle Hire. As a local why not hang up the car keys and explore a little by bike? Cycling has never been more popular and you will definitely experience your surroundings at a more relaxing pace. Some of the best cycling in the area can be experienced at the National Trust Estate at Penrose. Open all year round and FREE to access, the estate is a place of amazing variety, open parklands, lakeside wooded trails and stunning coastal scenery, all within striking distance. If you have your own bike, probably the best place to start is at Helston Amenity Park where the large FREE car park is never full. Access to the estate begins on quiet, wide tarmac paths, great for building confidence and using tag on’s and stabilisers.

Other recommended child friendly cycle paths, tried and tested are Stithians Lake Coast to coast trail:- Portreath to Devoran Sennen National Cycle way (park at Lands End) Marazion to Penzance Penzance Prom Tehidy Woods Trail

If you need to hire, Porthleven Cycle Hire is the National Trust’s recommended provider, well-stocked with the latest Giant mountain and road bikes and child friendly equipment. Hire for a week or a day and they deliver and collect to your door FREE OF CHARGE (subject to minimum order). If you need to refuel, there’s a delightful cafÊ half way along the main route at The Stables. They serve great coffee, cake and Roskilly’s Ice cream. The cafÊ also has a self-service maintenance station just in case you develop a loose saddle. The Stables CafÊ is open every day between Easter and November – they hold children’s events every Tuesday and Thursday during the school summer holidays. Call 01326 561101 or book online and download your own route map from www.porthlevencyclehire.co.uk.

Burns and Scalds Burns and Scalds are among the most serious and painful of Injuries. Cornwall Resus offer some expert advice and talk you through some Do’s and Don’ts. Children under 5 years of age may be at greater risk from the effects of Burns and Scalds so always seek medical attention.

Do

Don't

Ensure the area is safe, turn off the heat source.

Never apply any sort or cream, ointment or fat to the burn.

Hold the burned area under RUNNING cold water for a minimum of 10 minutes. This cools the actual burn not just the skin.

Do not burst any blisters that form - this can lead to serious infection.

For chemical burns (i.e. acid, bleach) cool for 20-30 minutes under running cold water. Remove watches or jewellery from around the affected area. Cover with sterile dressing (non fluffy) use cling film if you don’t have a suitable dressing. Don’t over wrap, a loose covering is fine.

Do not use adhesive dressings. Never attempt to remove anything that is stuck to the affected area (i.e. clothing) Do not under estimate how long 10 minutes is! Try and time it if you can to ensure effective treatment.

Sit your child down or on your lap. Keep the rest of their body warm with a blanket if necessary. Stay with your child and seek urgent medical attention or call 999 if necessary.
