This is a brand new quarterly magazine for local people and visitors. It is a survival guide to the under 5’s, with ideas of where to go, things to do, classes and groups to attend, cafes to visit, parks to play in plus a directory of products and services that will be helpful for families and children. I’m Katie, the editor. I moved to Cornwall with my husband and 2 young boys just over a year ago. I seemed to be forever searching on the internet, reading newspapers and asking around about what there is for little one’s, so the idea of Tots About was created.

Each issue will bring relevant articles written by parents and professionals, competitions for children and parents with wonderful prizes plus vouchers and coupons. I hope you enjoy reading this first issue as much as I have enjoyed putting it together but importantly I hope you find it useful especially the pullout ‘weekly plan’. If you want to share any good stories or experiences, whether it is balancing work with parenthood, tantrum tips, cooking tips or have suggestions for places to visit with your little ones then please get in touch. I would greatly welcome feedback so please email me your thoughts. Katie xx

Healthy Boxes are going through some exciting times right now. This spring the first school visits will be welcomed onto the farm to see where the vegetables have been grown and packed. Owner of the business Louise Reynolds said “For several years now we have been supplying the parents at schools and pre schools with vegetable boxes and have had great support but we wanted to offer something more. I feel it’s important that children get to see how the vegetables grow and gain a little more understanding of what is involved.” Louise plans to work with schools to offer tailor made visits, which can include activities relevant to the children’s school work. She feels there are so many exciting opportunities at the farm to inspire learning – how many seeds do we need to plant? how do plants change as they grow? when and how crops are harvested? Everyday tasks on the farm involve many school subjects such as Maths, Geography, Biology and English as well as practical skills. Visits will be offered free of charge to participating schools. To find out more about Healthy Boxes visit www.healthyboxes.co.uk or call Louise on 07966 8975611.

What is

BABY YOGA?

Tots About spoke to Mandy Adams from LoveBabyYoga in Hayle. Baby yoga enhances communication and the natural bond between parent & baby. During the one hour session, your baby is given as much physical activity as they would receive if they were handled and carried all day, promoting deeper and more regular sleep patterns. During early childhood children learn with their bodies before they learn with their minds. Physical activity and experience helps to develop pathways between the brain and the body that will support posture and balance for the remainder of their lives. The classes also include yoga for new mothers, promoting toning of the pelvic and back muscles through postures that can be used at home with your baby. Classes encourage eye contact as much as possible throughout the session, providing an opportunity to completely ‘be’ with your baby. It has been proven that baby’s who receive nurturing touch through holding, massage and other forms of loving physical contact gain weight faster, are calmer and have better intellectual and motor development. For classes in Hayle and further information please go to www.lovebabyyoga.co.uk or contact Mandy Adams 07952 836190 mandy@lovebabyyoga.co.uk

It will be the last time in your life when you will have all the answers. Test 3: Nights 1. Walk around from 5pm to 10pm carrying a wet bag weighing 4-6kg, with a loud radio turned to static 2. Fitness for Under Fives

DID YOU KNOW?

WHAT CAN WE DO?

According to NHS figures, nearly a quarter of children aged four and five are overweight or obese. Experts predict that by 2050 this could apply to 63% of children. The general message from the British Heart Foundation is “parents should turn the TV off. Too much TV sets up problems for the future.

Minimise the time children spend sitting watching TV, playing computer games and travelling by car, bus or train. For this age group, activity of any intensity should be encouraged, including light activity and more energetic physical activity.

To advertise contact 0844 414 8439

Babies

Toddlers

Babies should be encouraged to be active from birth. Before your baby begins to crawl, encourage them to be physically active by reaching and grasping, pulling and pushing, moving their head, body and limbs during daily routines, and during supervised floor play,
including tummy time. Once babies can move around, encourage them to be as active as possible in a safe, supervised and nurturing play environment.

Children who can walk on their own should be physically active every day for at least 180 minutes (3 hours). This should be spread throughout the day, indoors or outside. The 180 minutes can include light activity such as standing up, moving around, rolling and playing, as
well as more energetic activity like skipping,
hopping, running and jumping. Active play, such as using a climbing frame, riding a bike, playing in water, gymnastics, chasing games and ball games, is the best way for this age group to be physically active.

All children under 5 years old Children under 5 should not be inactive for long periods, except when they’re asleep. Watching TV, travelling by car, bus or train or being strapped into a buggy for long periods are not good for a child’s health and development. There’s growing evidence that such behaviour can increase their risk of poor health. All children under 5 who are overweight can improve their health by meeting the activity guidelines, even if their weight doesn’t change. To achieve and maintain a healthy weight, they may need to do additional activity and make changes to their diet. Little Dolphins Pre School, Godolphin, took part in a 6 week fitness programme with children’s fitness specialist, Katie from Healthy Young Hearts.

At ellieXercise Fitcamps & Pilates classes we rarely do a basic ab crunch exercise to work the abs. 100’s of crunches might build your six pack but they will not necessarily give you flatter abs which is ultimately what we all desire. These are created by working the whole core with a combination of pilates style abdominal exercises that will work your transverse abs & obliques which help you build flatter abs and a stronger core. Try my ABSolution for starters, it takes less than 10 mins ;) Details of all these exercises can be found at www.elliexercise.com
