I always find this an exhausting but refreshing season as I tidy up the mess from Xmas and calm down from all the festivities but then I plan my new year with new health regimes, what to grow in the garden and start saving for holidays. A great way to start will be a bit of me time to regroup my thoughts and boost my energy. We are lucky in West Cornwall to have Pippa Best from Mama’s Retreat on our door step, see page 9. At HQ we are busy getting the magazine out and about across West Cornwall and still spreading the words Tots About,

Physiotherapy for you, your bump and baby Moving through your trimesters your body changes in many different ways to prepare for your baby’s arrival. As physiotherapists are highly qualified in all aspects of women’s health, we understand these changes and are passionate about helping you to have a happy pregnancy and birth. Here at Helston Physiotherapy Practice we will guide you through these changes helping you to keep strong, active and fit for everything your hormones might throw at you! Tots About spoke to Mary Gosling, Project Manager from Real Baby Milk, Cornwall "Our aims are to empower families with fantastic, evidence based information and support, protect, promote and support breastfeeding. We do this by Training & supporting breastfeeding peer supporters in local communities and producing information and resources for families, peer supporters, health professionals, children centres and businesses. In Cornwall, Real Baby Milk has been commissioned to ensure that the quality of support and information provided by Peer Supporters in various settings is at its absolute best. In part, this will be achieved through the regular updating of volunteers skills and knowledge through training and ensuring that professional development is valued, encouraged and supported. So a mum looking for support with breastfeeding, maximising breastmilk or giving or expressing breastmilk, should receive support from a Peer Supporter, who is a mum who has breastfed and /or provided breastmilk for her child. This Peer Supporter will have had a positive and successful personal breastfeeding experience and will have undertaken a Peer Support training course. Peer Supporters are friendly and welcoming and always looking out for a Mum with no one to talk to. She is there for mothers and listens, empathises with, supports and empowers mothers. She acts as a source of good, up to date information about breastfeeding and related issues, and has access to resources, such as books, leaflets and DVDs, to share with mothers and helps them talk through their choices, then supports them in whatever choice they decide to make. A Peer Supporter enables mums to have a positive breastfeeding experience, no matter how long or short. A Peer Supporter knows her boundaries, not giving advice, and referring on to an appropriate practitioner as necessary"

Motherhood threw my identity out with the bathwater. I pretended I was doing fine. In reality, the only thing I was sure of was that I was a failure. Eventually I realised that the perfect mother we all read about in magazines is a myth – an impossible expectation that leaves mothers feeling lost, exhausted and unappreciated in between the joyful moments. We do amazing things every day, but we don’t give ourselves any credit, or metime, because we never feel like we’re enough. So five years ago, I created www.storyofmum.com with my mum. Now we help amazing busy mothers who are trying to do it all but often feel inadequate, to bring more rest, joy, and creativity into their lives, even when that feels completely impossible. We host Mamas’ Retreats in Cornwall and online, and offer one to one mama support. And I’ve learnt that mothers have incredible power - to change ourselves, our families, and the world for the better – and that change begins with looking after mum.
Story of Mum's Mamas’ Retreats hosted by Pippa Best and Leif Olsen in Cornwall include gentle yoga to calm and strengthen your exhausted body, delicious food, simple creative activities to remind you of your own needs and dreams, and time to share your experiences with another mum (if you want to). Most importantly, they offer a precious space where YOU can be nurtured for a few hours instead of worrying about everyone else. Story of Mum also host online Mamas’ Retreats, and provide individual support to mums facing challenges and adjusting to new stages of motherhood: space for mums to be heard, and to learn practical ways to feel more calm, happy and confident. 2016 Mamas’ Retreat dates include 17 January, 20 March, 15 May, 18 September & 27 November. Find us at www.storyofmum.com or email pippa@storyofmum.com. Please mention Tots About when contacting an advertiser

Healthy Boxes is a great way to get your local produce every week. We offer fresh veg, locally reared free range meats, Cornish dairy products and hand made bakes. Take a look at our website to see our full range - www.healthyboxes.co.uk Got any questions then give Louise a call on 07966 897561 or email louise@healthyboxes.co.uk For us January is a time for planning the coming year’s crops, weeks spent searching the seed catalogues for the best varieties to grow and keeping an eye out for anything new on the scene. It is a bit too early to think about planting much but as the days start to get a few minutes longer with each passing week I can’t resist getting a few salad seeds into pots. They germinate so quickly, even at this time of year so they make a good crop for the children to help you with. Choose a pack of mixed leaves - ones that contain mizuna, rocket and mustard leaves are good hardy types or rainbow chard is a colourful one to try.
are growing by taking a photo or making a drawing in a notebook each week. The salad leaves should be ready to start picking in 6-8 weeks depending on how the weather is. Pick a few of the biggest leaves and leave the rest to grow throughout the spring. The leaves will provide some interesting flavours and colours for their lunch boxes.
Sow the seeds into a container & leave on a window sill or a sheltered spot in the garden (you might need to protect from the slugs). A good way to keep the children interested is by asking them to record how fast the plants Please mention Tots About when contacting an advertiser

Face 2 Face Face 2 Face is a national scheme run by Scope and offers emotional support and practical guidance, to parents with disabled children in their area. The support can be tailored to people’s needs, and includes drop in Oasis groups, home visits or online and telephone support. The support is delivered by Face 2 Face volunteers. All volunteer befrienders are a parent of a disabled child, trained to offer emotional support and practical information and they understand what it’s like to navigate through the often worrying, lonely and confusing experience of having a child diagnosed with support needs.
"It's a relief to know that you can make contact with other parents who are going through the same thing." Lindsay Face 2 Face parent befriender Scope runs Face 2 Face because caring for a disabled child can be tough. When parents are juggling work, household tasks and countless medical appointments for their child, there’s little time left for them.
26
Parents often feel alone and isolated. Emma, mum of four from Redruth, is the parent of two disabled children. She struggled to cope with her children’s diagnoses until she attended her local Face 2 Face Oasis group. “It can be very isolating being a parent of a disabled child. We had no emotional support until I was signposted to our local Oasis group. Speaking to somebody who truly understands what you’re going through and can point you in the right direction for extra support is a huge help.”
To advertise contact Katie on 07971 294554
There are 17 drop in Oasis groups throughout West Cornwall. For more information about how Scope’s Face 2 Face Cornwall service could help or to volunteer to become a befriender please call 01872-302411. The Happy Birth Project The Happy Birth Project is an initiative started by a group of like minded midwives from Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust with the aim to make our labour ward and the rest of the maternity unit a better environment for the women and families using our service. Midwives know that the environment available for a woman in labour can strongly influence how smoothly it progresses. Feeling safe, remaining upright (having access to equipment that facilitates this) and being in comfortable surroundings all create the optimum conditions for a positive birth experience, something every woman deserves. We have been working to secure funding through running fundraising events, applying for official grants and approaching local business in order to update the department decoratively and provide equipment which will make our much loved unit a better place to give birth, and to work. This also involves campaigning for changes and the introduction of new and innovative equipment. Find us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/ thehappybirthproject

Bronchiolitis- More than just a cold Bronchiolitis is a common lung infection that affects babies and young children. It is caused by inflammation of the small airways (the Bronchioles) in the lungs and in the UK usually occurs in the winter months. One in three babies will have the condition before their first birthday. Cornwall Resus are on hand to offer some expert advice on what to do if your baby is showing signs of having more than a cold. •

•
For most children, Bronchiolitis is no more serious than a cold but spotting the signs that your child has a more serious infection is crucial, as some may need hospital attention.
•
Fast breathing- shallow, quick breaths not taking in much air
•
Appetite- inability to feed
•
Cough- distinctive rasping
Symptoms are likely to get slightly worse during the first three days, and then gradually start to improve. Most cases of Bronchiolitis are not serious, but it is important to regularly monitor your child and look out for any significant changes or no signs of improvement.
•
Temperature- high temperature will usually accompany cold-like symptoms of a runny nose
•
If your baby exhibits all of these symptoms, seek medical attention from a healthcare professional.
•
In a small number of severe cases, your baby's tongue and lips may turn 'blue' in colour. If this happens, take your baby to A&E or call for an ambulance immediately
Cornwall Resus always recommend that you seek medical attention if you are worried about your baby or child; however, if you are unsure what to look out for the following symptoms usually indicate a more severe case of Bronchiolitis:
