We are sponsoring 2 big events this year, The Mother, Baby and Child Fair and Playfest. We hope to see you there and please come and say hello.
Welcome to Summer. You’ll see there are a few changes with the timetables this time. Due to the Children’s Centre groups changing regularly there is now a generic advert for them in the centre pages. Please call each Centre to see what they have on daily or see their guide online. For our advertisers classes remember to use the vouchers for FREE TASTER sessions on page 24/25. We hope this method works better for you? ‘With fine weather on the horizon’, she says with hope in her heart, there is a guide to local family friendly beaches and where to go with your little one’s. Let us know what you get up this Summer and we’d love to see your photos on the fb page., Look Out Tots About.
Last but not least the magazine is proud to announce Chris Nicholls Motors in Helston and Penzance have offered to sponsor the Helston and Penzance timetables so if you are looking for a specific family car please get in touch with them, as they ‘can find any car’.

The Happy Birth Project Optimal Cord Clamping The Best Gift You Can Give Your Baby (www.bloodtobaby.com)
There has been a lot of news coverage on ‘Delayed Cord Clamping’ recently and you may be wondering what all the fuss is about. As a midwife, umbilical cord clamping and cutting after birth is part of my role, but if you aren’t involved with birth day-to-day then the timing of clamping a baby’s umbilical cord might seem insignificant. I prefer using the term ‘optimal’ because that is all this is, clamping the cord at the optimum time for mum and baby. Until quite recently most babies born in UK hospitals had their cords clamped and cut immediately, but it is now the recommended practice to wait at least a minute for almost EVERY baby. This means if you have a caesarean, an assisted birth or a premature birth then your baby can still benefit!
(essential for their brain development), oxygen, stem cells and immune boosting cells. This helps them gently adjust to the outside world and means you get a little pause in all the excitement to meet your newborn baby properly, it may also make the placenta smaller and easier to deliver for you. I hope I have managed to convince you to include optimal cord clamping in your birth plan! If you want to know more use the link above or find us on Facebook – at ‘The Happy Birth Project’. To meet midwives from the Royal Cornwall Hospital, local pregnancy and baby related businesses and raise money for your local maternity unit come along to our next fundraising event on the July 22nd at Chacewater Village Hall, 4:30-7:30pm.
TheHappyBirthProject
If you have an uncomplicated birth and baby is well, cord clamping should be delayed for 3-5 minutes as the evidence suggests that this is the best time for it to happen – that is unless you choose a natural/physiological delivery of your placenta (then the cord shouldn’t be cut until the placenta is delivered). Optimal cord clamping should now happen routinely in all hospitals but here are a few reasons why it should matter to you: At the time a baby is born up to 30% of their own blood is still contained in the placenta, by delaying the cutting of the cord for just a few minutes baby receive lots of this extra blood which is rich in iron Please mention Tots About when contacting an advertiser

Baby Signing What is baby signing and how does it work? Baby signing is a technique of using sign language to help hearing babies communicate better, before they can talk. Some people think speech development can slow down if you teach your baby to sign but in fact, research shows that it can help children speak earlier than normal as well as reduce frustration and strengthen the bond between baby and parents. When we talk, we naturally use gestures whilst communicating. How many times do you gesture “would you like a drink”? Babies naturally use gestures from a very young age, for example, asking to be picked up by raising their arms. One common sign that we teach is wanting food or eating, where you touch your closed mouth with the tips of your fingers, this is a very natural sign for your baby to learn because they put their fingers in their mouth when they are hungry. If you are out for a walk and you see a bird, you could open and close your index finger and thumb like a beak, saying the word “bird” when you sign. Signing is done alongside the word so babies can make a link between the word and gesture.
You don’t need a special course to learn baby signing, there are books available, you can find information on the internet or you can see about any groups that are in your area, where you can meet other parents and have fun. “time2sign” is a one such parent and child group, where we sing, sign and socialise. We have sessions on a Wednesday morning in St. Austell, where we sing familiar and original songs which makes baby signing easy and fun to do. We have a sign of the week, a sensory cool down and then tea and coffee, when you make friends. You can find us on Facebook or visit our web page time2sign.webs.com or email time2sign@hotmail.com. Kelly Harris (time2sign).
Competition! You can start baby signing with your child from the moment they are born but generally at about 6-9 months you might see them understand some signs and between 9-18 months children might start using signs and sounds to communicate. When your child starts to sign, their sign may not be as clear as the one that you are signing but being able to understand what they are trying to communicate is the key. The main thing is to reinforce the pattern by giving your child lots of praise.

Party Planning Children’s parties can be an amazing time for making memories for yourself and your little ones. So here’s our top tips for keeping it stress-free and fun for everyone: Involve your child in the planning – follow their lead in picking invites, decorations etc. as this will help build anticipation without the party being an unfamiliar prospect; TC Party People can help plan the whole event with you all. Keep parties short – over-tired children are a disaster for everyone involved; two hours is usually plenty of time for under 5s to avoid the tears and tantrums from too much fun and food! Be specific on invites – you don’t want children arriving in their best partywear for a Creation Station messy play party! Also, if you want parents to stay then it’s worth saying so to make sure there’s no mixed messages. Don’t worry if child doesn’t want to be involved and is scared by the whole prospect when the day arrives. It can be overwhelming and you know your child best, so plan activities that they enjoy and are comfortable with. If your child loves sport, then Rubytots, Jump with Jo and Playball can help. Don’t force a traditional ‘party’ or try to include every child they know. Two friends at CraftBox or Create&Paint might be much more fun for them. Finally, don’t feel that you need to entertain adult guests, but do accept any and all help before, during and after the party. And above all, relax and have fun too!
Themed parties with your favourite characters filled with fun, magic and memories! t: 07415 490357

We are working to close the gap between those who are doing well and those who are doing less well by supporting those with greater needs.
Multi-agency Early Help services in Cornwall play a big part in narrowing the gap in outcomes for those children and young people who are vulnerable to poor outcomes. Families, carers and professionals identify additional needs early and work together effectively to assess those needs and to deal with them before they escalate into concerns about a child’s or young person’s health, development, welfare or safety.

Information Sheet 8
First Aid Facts Sun Safety With the warmer weather already here; Cornwall Resus- pediatric first aid trainers are on hand to offer advice on sun safety for little ones. Tips to keep your child safe in the sun… •
Babies and children need to have their skin protected between March and October in the UK.
•
Protect your child's eyes with sunglasses that meet the British Standard (BSEN 1836:2005) and carry the "CE" mark – check the label.
•
Encourage your child to play in the shade – for example, under trees – especially between 11am and 3pm, when the sun is at its strongest.
•
If your child is swimming, use a waterproof sunblock of factor 15 or above. Reapply after toweling.
•
Keep babies under the age of six months out of direct sunlight, especially around midday.
Sunburn
•
Cover exposed parts of your child's skin with sunscreen, even on cloudy or overcast days. Use one that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or above and is effective against UVA and UVB. Don't forget to apply it to their shoulders, nose, ears, cheeks, and the tops of their feet. Reapply often throughout the day.
•
Be especially careful to protect your child's shoulders and the back of their neck when they're playing, as these are the most common areas for sunburn.
•
Cover your child up in loose cotton clothes, such as an oversized T-shirt with sleeves.
•
Get your child to wear a floppy hat with a wide brim that shades their face and neck.
Information taken from NHS Choices, please visit this website for a wealth of information about staying safe in the sun.
You should see your GP if a young child or baby has sunburn, as their skin is particularly fragile. Signs of severe sunburn can include: •
blistering or swelling of the skin (oedema)
•
chills
•
a high temperature (fever) of 38C (100.4F) or above, or 37.5C (99.5F) or above in children under five
•
dizziness, headaches and feeling sick (symptoms of heat exhaustion)
Sunlight and vitamin D The best source of vitamin D is summer sunlight on our skin. Because it's important to keep your child's skin safe in the sun, it's recommended all babies and young children aged six months to five years should take a daily supplement containing vitamin D, in the form of vitamin drops.
