For many it means the children have settled into their new schools or preschools or started nursery for the first time. Parents have settled back into a routine and hopefully all is calm. Here at HQ we are busy planning the next Baby and Children’s Fair at Heartlands. After the success of the first one launched in July we are sponsoring the Xmas fair on 4th Dec. It would be great to see you there (see inside front cover) Many congratulations to the winner of the Hendra holiday competition, we were over whelmed with entries.

In this issue we have the Xmas stocking Xmas shopping guide and are giving away a free pair of counting gloves from COGG. See from page 4 Enjoy this busy season with Halloween, Bonfire night and then Xmas, where will you see Santa? Keep following us on fb as this is updated daily.

Why supporting your local Children’s Hospice South West shop makes such a difference to local families Rachel and Jason Willingham and their three children, twins Lucas and Hope and younger sister Betsy, come to Children’s Hospice South West’s Little Harbour hospice (near St Austell) for care and support. Lucas was poorly from birth and found swallowing, sucking and even crying hard work. He had to be tube-fed due to recurrent bouts of aspiration pneumonia and when he was six months old he had his first seizure. They say about their stay at the hospice; "You’re not the nurse, you’re not the doctor, you’re not the physio, you’re not the carer, you’re not the dietician. You’re back to being mum and dad and coming here to Little Harbour feels like we’re coming home, it’s a home from home.” By shopping at your local Children's Hospice South West shop or donating good quality items, you’re helping raise funds to support families like the Willinghams. FI n d i n g yourself again Having a baby is usually expected to be a joyful experience, so it can come as a shock if you don’t feel that way. Difficulties with low mood are more common than most people realise: about one in ten new mums are affected, and many don’t tell anyone about how they are feeling. The signs vary, but can include feeling sad, guilty, anxious, irritable, losing motivation, problems concentrating, and changes in appetite. These can persist for a couple of years or more. Although the causes of post-natal low mood are unclear, hormonal changes, disturbed sleep, and changes in role or identity may be involved. Life after birth is often very different from life before, and many parents find it difficult to adjust to this. However, because we rarely talk about how tough it can be, mums may feel guilty or think they are the only ones finding it hard. Comparing ourselves with others can also make things worse, as we notice people who seem to be coping better than us, and forget that they struggle sometimes too. Fortunately, help is available. Outlook South West run free "Finding Yourself

Again" groups especially for mums with a child under three. These are an opportunity to meet with other mums experiencing similar difficulties, and to explore ways of managing the competing demands of motherhood and improve your mood. You can self-refer to these groups, without the need to go via a GP or health professional. You simply call (01208) 871905 or visit www.outlooksw.co.uk for more information.

Helping you get back on track

Would you like to join a friendly and supportive group with other mums who are struggling with post-natal low mood, and learn some tools that will help you overcome depression? Call Outlook South West for more information on (01208) 871905 or visit www.outlooksw.co.uk

The Happy Birth Project 5 Ways to be an Awesome Birth Partner Are you going to support your partner/spouse/ friend in labour? Read these tips to help you be the best birth partner possible. 1. Keep your cool - Your partner needs you to be a lighthouse during the storm, be calm and confident, even if things don’t go to plan, reassure her that what’s happening is normal, women have been giving birth for thousands of years – she can do this. 2. Do your research - Find out as much as you can about birth to prepare yourself (Men, Love and Birth is a great book by Mark Harris) and talk to your partner about her hopes and preferences so you can advocate for her, be prepared that she may change her mind though! Roll with it if she does and support her regardless. 3. Understand that you won’t always be ‘doing’ something - You and your partner don’t know how she will cope with labour, a back massage might sound lovely now but in labour she may not want to be touched at all, many women become very introverted and partners are often left twiddling their thumbs, if you are present and engaged then that is enough.

4. Be practical - The last thing she will want is you asking for directions to the hospital/birth centre mid-contraction, make sure, if you are leaving home for the birth that you know the route and have change for parking if required. Even better bring a bag for yourself with a change of clothes, snacks, drinks, phone charger etc. On this day she needs you to be organised and in control. If you’re staying at home get familiar with the birth pool (if you are using one) or make tea for the midwives ☺ 5. Be ready to get hands on - If your partner does want attention a foot or back massage can be really helpful and relaxing, don’t be shy! Offer her snacks and drinks, attend to her comfort needs and adjust her environment to suit her (pillows, bath/pool, lighting). Lastly, don’t sweat it, the most important thing is that you are there and remember, at the end of this journey you will be a family! Good Luck. x

Care & Support in Cornwall

Children's Centres • access to health and parenting support services • information about training and employment • access to play activities and childcare • a base for childminder networks • support for children and parents/carers with additional needs • community meeting rooms • crèche facilities • access to toy libraries Cornwall’s Children’s Centre’s are an integral part of the Early Help Locality Teams. The vision is for all children and young people in Cornwall to be healthy and safe to have good opportunities to achieve and to improve them. We are working to close the gap between those who are doing well and those who are doing less well by supporting those with greater needs.

Multi-agency Early Help services in Cornwall play a big part in narrowing the gap in outcomes for those children and young people who are vulnerable to poor outcomes. Families, carers and professionals identify additional needs early and work together effectively to assess those needs and to deal with them before they escalate into concerns about a child’s or young person’s health, development, welfare or safety.

Getting your fitness back Getting back in shape after having a baby is a big concern for many new mums, however knowing where to start can be a challenge. The fitness regime that may or may not have preceded pre- pregnancy probably feels like a distant memory, that coupled with the heady early weeks of motherhood, can mean that any form of exercise becomes less of a priority. Following the all clear from your GP at your 6 week check or 10 weeks post c-section, you can technically do any type of exercise you like, however I would

28

recommend following the advise of a fully qualified pre and postnatal fitness instructor as there are many factors to consider, from Diastasis Recti (separation of tummy muscles) to pelvic floor issues. However daunting it may seem, starting out is easier than you think! These days there are so many different classes you can try whatever your fitness level, from babywearing exercise classes like Kangaroo Fitness to buggy exercise and mother and baby yoga. Not only will you benefit physically from the session but

emotionally too, post-natal exercise has been shown to decrease stress levels and help reduce post natal depression. Exercising with your baby is a wonderful bonding experience, it also gives you the opportunity to meet other new mums and little ones. The important thing to remember is go easy on yourself, everyone wants to get their pre pregnancy figure and fitness levels back, however there is no rush!

First Aid Facts

Meningitis Meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord (meninges). It can affect anyone, but is most common in babies, young children, teenagers and young adults. Meningitis can be very serious if not treated quickly. It can cause life-threatening blood poisoning (septicaemia) and result in permanent damage to the brain or nerves. Cornwall Resus – Paediatric first aid trainers are on hand to deliver some advice…. The first symptoms are usually fever, vomiting, headache and feeling unwell. Limb pain, pale skin and cold hands and feet often appear earlier than the rash, neck stiffness, dislike of bright lights and confusion. Other signs in babies: •

Tense or bulging soft spot on their head

Refusing to feed

Irritable when picked up, with a high pitched or moaning cry

A stiff body with jerky movements, or else floppy and lifeless

Fever is often absent in babies less than three months of age

If you are seriously worried about a child who is ill, don’t wait for a rash to appear – get medical help. But if they are already ill and get a new rash or spots, use the Tumbler Test. Press a clear glass tumbler firmly against the rash. If you can see the marks clearly through the glass seek urgent medical help immediately.

Information Sheet 9 Check the entire body. Look out for tiny red or brown pin-prick marks which can change into larger red or purple blotches and blood blisters. The darker the skin the harder it is to see a septicaemic rash so check lighter areas like the palms of hands and soles of feet or look inside the eyelids and the roof of the mouth. Remember, a very ill baby or child needs medical help even if there are only a few spots, a rash or no rash at all. Things to remember: •

Don't wait for the rash as it doesn't always appear

Not everyone gets all of these symptoms

Symptoms can appear in any order

Septicemia (sepsis) can occur with or without meningitis.

Your know your child best; check on them often, trust your instincts and act fast

Ensure your baby or child is up to date with their vaccinations

Some types of Meningitis are more common in young adults- If you have older children starting university for the first time they should have the MenACWY vaccine from their GP ideally 2 weeks before starting university, not only does it protect them but it helps stop the spread to others.

What should I do if I am worried about someone who is ill? Trust your instincts. Someone who has meningitis or septicaemia could become seriously ill very quickly. Get medical help immediately if you are worried. Information taken from NHS Choices and meningitis.org please visit these websites for a wealth of information on meningitis.
