You may have heard the exciting news that the Royal Cornwall Hospital is getting an upgrade of its maternity facilities! My name is Lizzie, I’m one of the midwives and am here to tell you all about it. The main difference will be the addition of a midwife-led birth centre within the maternity wing, if you have had a low risk pregnancy, you will be able to come here to have your baby and will receive one-to-one care from a midwife, in a home from home environment. The birth centre will have 4 labour rooms all with birthing pools, active birthing aids like birthing balls, mats and slings, en-suite bathrooms and couches that can move into double beds, the midwives who work here will be dedicated to supporting normal birth and will have extra training, like aromatherapy, to enhance their skills. The birth centre is on track to open in late September 2017.

We also have a brand new neonatal unit (which has just opened its doors), where our tiniest patients can receive the highest standard of care in state-of-the-art surroundings. We have more ‘rooming in’ rooms, where mums can stay with their babies and enough room for recliner chairs beside every incubator and cot to promote bonding. The rest of the maternity unit will also be updated and upgraded to ensure that the standard is equal throughout so don’t worry, if you do need to come to the Delivery Suite to have your baby you won’t be missing out. The Cornwall Birth and Baby Appeal is helping to fund the changes in maternity, follow them on Facebook for more information about how to get involved! TheCornwallBirthandBabyAppeal

Listening is hard to do I specialise in children aged 2 to 12, and one of the most important things I try to convey to parents is the need to listen to your child. If you have a child who keeps having temper tantrums, you need to think about what is causing the tantrum. For example, if your child always has a meltdown in the middle of the supermarket, you need to try and work out why that is. A young child may not be able to tell you why, but by trying different things out, you may be able to eliminate the problem. It could be that they are bored and need to be more involved in the shopping by asking them to get the apples etc. Taking someone along to help you can also do the trick. They could also be tired and hungry so changing the time of the visit may be a good idea. It is possible that your child has worked out if they scream and shout you will pick them up a packet of sweets! If this is the case, then changing this dilemma will take longer, but can be done. The tantrum is a form of communication, and although this behaviour is not what any of us like to witness, it is a sign that we need to listen. By throwing the tantrum the child doesn’t necessarily get what they want, but as the parents and experienced adults, we need to listen to what is being expressed and see what changes can be made to try and accommodate everyone’s wishes. It is difficult for children to find the words they want to say and it can all explode at times. Supporting them in their time of need is important, however hard.

Also, remember how difficult it is to be on the receiving end of that tantrum. It is never easy whether your child is 2 or 15 to have them screaming in your face. Our children will not always like the decisions we make for them and yes sometimes we make mistakes. Sometimes we need to find the ‘middle ground’, and compromise on what we both want to make things work. You base your parenting on how you were raised by your parents, your own personal experiences and also what you have learnt from others around you. What works for one child, may not work for another so keeping an open mind and listening to everyone is needed to try and keep a family happy. If you are looking for more parenting advice, please visit www.thefamilyfairy.co.uk or call Sharon on 07950859971

Care & Support in Cornwall

Children's Centres • access to health and parenting support services • information about training and employment • access to play activities and childcare • a base for childminder networks • support for children and parents/carers with additional needs • community meeting rooms • crèche facilities • access to toy libraries Cornwall’s Children’s Centre’s are an integral part of the Early Help Locality Teams. The vision is for all children and young people in Cornwall to be healthy and safe to have good opportunities to achieve and to improve them. We are working to close the gap between those who are doing well and those who are doing less well by supporting those with greater needs.

Multi-agency Early Help services in Cornwall play a big part in narrowing the gap in outcomes for those children and young people who are vulnerable to poor outcomes. Families, carers and professionals identify additional needs early and work together effectively to assess those needs and to deal with them before they escalate into concerns about a child’s or young person’s health, development, welfare or safety.

UV Accessories

Little Explorers Accessories, Bracelets, Keyrings and Necklaces to keep your little explorer safe!

Please remember that one of the best forms of protection is physical protection including •

Wearing long sleeved clothing, broad brimmed hats and sunglasses • Seeking out shade particularly during the middle part of the day when the UV is at its highest level • Applying sunscreens at least SPF15 preferably SPF30 or above • Sun Suits, Rash vests and wetsuits offer sun protection when swimming or doing other water activities. Remember just because its cloudy doesn’t mean you can’t burn. Both UVA and UVB radiation contribute to:

Shufflebums Accessories contain UV Beads with which are UV reactive. They act as a reminder of the UV your little explorer is being exposed to. They are in no form a substitute for sun protection. When protected sun exposure allows for healthy growth and development as well as enjoyment of outdoor activities. The purpose of little explorer’s accessories is to reduce risk of skin diseases which are related to overexposure to sunlight by acting as a visual prompt to the UV’s presence. Thereby enabling you to suitably protect your little explorer. Remember just because its cloudy doesn’t mean you can’t burn. Little explorer accessories are currently available through our Etsy shop (Shufflebum) or direct message through Facebook (www.facebook.com/ shufflebumUK).

Changes in the skin such as sun spots Cancerous changes in the skin Ageing effects on the skin

Information taken from NHS and Cancer Research UK. Over-exposure to the sun during childhood can affect the risk of melanoma later in life. When parents use sun protection such as hats, shade, sunscreen and clothing, their children are more likely to use these sun protection methods too. It's important to establish good sun protection habits early on in life. Parents are advised to keep babies under 6 months out of direct sunlight but never cover your pram with a blanket to shield your baby from the sun as his can cause the temperature in the pram to increase to dangerously high levels and decrease the circulation of air.

First Aid Facts

Heat Stroke Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are two potentially serious conditions that can occur if babies and children get too hot. Heat exhaustion: child becomes very hot and start to lose water or salt from their body, which leads to the symptoms listed below and generally feeling unwell. Heatstroke: the body is no longer able to cool itself and a baby/ child’s body temperature becomes dangerously high (sunstroke is when this is caused by prolonged exposure to direct sunlight).

If left untreated, more severe symptoms of heatstroke can develop, including confusion, disorientation, seizures (fits) and a loss of consciousness. What parents can do to avoid heatstroke in babies and children: • •

Babies and young children are especially vulnerable to heat stroke, particularly if they are outside for too long in very hot weather, and more so if they become dehydrated or are dressed too warmly.

Cornwall Resus are on hand to give sensible advice on how to avoid your baby becoming over heated and how to spot the signs…

• •

Heat exhaustion or heatstroke can develop quickly over a few minutes, or gradually over several hours or days. How to spot the signs: • • • • • • • •

Increased temperature (36-37 Degrees Celsius is normal.) Hot, red and dry skin. Restlessness. Lethargy. Vomiting. Fast heart rate. Increased thirst. Decreased urine output or concentrated urine.

Dress your baby/ young child in lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. Try to keep your baby/ young child in the shade when outside — and check to make sure that they are staying cool during car rides. Give babies and young children more fluids than usual on hot days. If the temperature is especially hot, keep your baby inside if you can. Never leave babies in cars. Never cover your pram with a blanket to shield your baby from the sun. This is a common mistake. This can cause the temperature in the pram to increase to dangerously high levels and decrease the circulation of air. If required use a UV pram cover specifically for this job as they also provide adequate ventilation.
