Well my journey with Tots About has now come to an end. What an amazing 4 ½ years it has been. From the simple idea at my kitchen table, with the look of bewilderment from my friends, (“Katie are you sure, you are a PE teacher”), to the 19th successful issue, this has been an incredibly rewarding time in my life. Tots About has grown over West Cornwall to be a great hub of info for pregnant woman and parents/carers of the under 5’s. I have loved the people I have met and spoken to and without the support and encouragement from friends and family, this wouldn’t have happened, so thank you to those close to me. Receiving an email or call from a relocator to Cornwall has been a highlight, hearing them say the magazine has been invaluable to them. This is the main reason I set it up, to help those like me to find things to do and find the support you need when raising under 5’s. I have now decided to follow my passion for which I originally qualified in 1995 and since up skilled to the industries highest level as a Soft Tissue Therapist. I run a private practice at my home in Breage, Move Well, as well work at Helston Physiotherapy Practice. I am so thrilled for Polly to take over the reins and I wish her and Tots About every success.

Katie xx This is the beginning of an exciting journey for me. At the start of the year I took a leap into the unknown and left my job as a secondary school teacher to look after my little girl, Gracie. She's an awesome little person and being a mum is definitely the best thing I've ever done. She's nearly two now and, like all toddlers, into everything and in need of lots of entertainment. Thank goodness for Tots About! I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to take on the magazine. Katie has done such an amazing job setting it up and making it the go-to guide for under 5s. I hope I can continue her good work and I look forward to getting to know you all better!

I do love the season change here in Cornwall, seeing the leaves turn, the dogs back on the beaches, the clear crisp mornings and smell of chimney smoke through the villages. We do live in an amazing place and as the nights pull in we get to snuggle up and spend quality family time in front of fire watching a great movie or playing board games. Our children start to get excited for the festive period and as parents we get back into our routines. So Tots About is a great way to help plan your time. This Autumn/Xmas issue is again full of interesting articles, lots of advertisers

for gift ideas, photography, party, classes, childcare and information on baby fairs and sales and first aid advice. The Heartlands have sponsored the Redruth community page. This is a great free playground and place to catch up with friends. Pop along to Red River café and mention Tots About A big farewell from me and my boys who were the reason I started Tots About.

What is the Alexander Technique? It is a way to discover the easy freedom in your movements that toddlers have. Toddlers are fearless and joyful as they learn to move from sitting to standing up and walking, balancing that heavy head with perfect coordination. They live in the moment. They don’t let a bump on the head interfere with the joy of discovering how to stand and walk. They cry, get over it and carry on exploring. We are born to move. We are designed to move easily and naturally, just as toddlers do. As we grow up and meet the demands of daily life we become a bit fearful. This shows up in our movements as tension, awkwardness and even pain. We aren’t really aware of all this. It feels natural to slump on the sofa at the end of a hard day. In fact we aren’t designed to slump! We think we are relaxing and are unaware that our muscles have to both stretch and contract to allow us to slump, which causes tension and is tiring. Our days become filled with the extra challenges of pregnancy and parenthood.

Do you recognise any of these situations? • You lean back more as the weight of your beautiful bump increases. Painful back anyone? • You bend awkwardly to pick up your baby and the toys from the floor. • Your baby is crying, his little sister refuses to move from the floor to put on her coat and you fear being late for that appointment. You become tense and stressed. Your little ones pick up on this and become even more tearful and uncooperative. These ways of reacting to everyday life become habits. We aren’t aware that our habits aren’t serving us very well. In fact our slumping, tensing and stressing are not the only way. Now is the perfect time to learn that there is another way to be! The Alexander Technique gives us a ‘toolbox’ of ways to become aware of our unhelpful habits and how to ‘undo’ them. Our days are still full on but we can find a new calm and ease in how we do everything. Well, its not really new – remember that toddler? It’s in us all. The Alexander Technique shows us how to rediscover it

Care & Support in Cornwall

Children's Centres • access to health and parenting support services • information about training and employment • access to play activities and childcare • a base for childminder networks • support for children and parents/carers with additional needs • community meeting rooms • crèche facilities • access to toy libraries Cornwall’s Children’s Centre’s are an integral part of the Early Help Locality Teams. The vision is for all children and young people in Cornwall to be healthy and safe to have good opportunities to achieve and to improve them. We are working to close the gap between those who are doing well and those who are doing less well by supporting those with greater needs.

Multi-agency Early Help services in Cornwall play a big part in narrowing the gap in outcomes for those children and young people who are vulnerable to poor outcomes. Families, carers and professionals identify additional needs early and work together effectively to assess those needs and to deal with them before they escalate into concerns about a child’s or young person’s health, development, welfare or safety.

British Red Cross

Connecting Communities in Cornwall The British Red Cross is introducing a brand new service in Camborne and Redruth to tackle loneliness and social isolation, in partnership with the Co-op. Responding to its research which found over 9 million of us regularly feel lonely the Red Cross’ new Community Connectors are ready to provide a helping hand to adults of all ages who feel they have no one to turn to. This includes new parents, people dealing with bereavement, and those going through divorce or separation – many of whom feel in need of a bit of extra support. Loneliness is not something a new Mum would expect to feel, but the research indicates they are a group who are particularly vulnerable to becoming isolated often due to tiredness, constant demands for attention from the new baby, and changes to their usual social interactions. If it continues for too long, loneliness can pose risks to

26

our physical as well as our emotional health. Its impact can be as damaging to health as smoking and obesity. If you’re struggling with life’s demands or simply don’t know where to turn for a friendly chat, Red Cross volunteers, like Andrea, can help. Andrea Kitto, from Camborne, struggled with loneliness for two years. She is now a volunteer with the Community Connector service and is hoping to use her personal experiences to help others. She said: “I know I can support people who feel cut off from their community. I understand how they feel and what they’re going through. I know what loneliness is, but I also know help is out there."

“As a Community Connector volunteer I will be offering companionship and support to people who feel very alone. It’s a lovely feeling knowing that you’re doing something positive for someone and helping them get their identity and selfconfidence back.” The British Red Cross is looking for friendly people to join its team of volunteers helping people towards a brighter and better-connected future.

By giving just a few hours a week you can join with others and together make a big difference to the lives of people who feel alone in your area. For more information about volunteering, or to help someone affected by loneliness or social isolation receive support, contact the British Red Cross Community Connector service at ConnectCornwall@redcross.org.uk

First Aid Facts

ASTHMA Each year at the start of the Autumn term, there is a big rise in the number of children rushed to hospital with their Asthma. Cornwall Resus are on hand to provide some advice and top tips. Spot the signs of an Asthma attack before it happens:

If your child's symptoms get worse quickly, call 999:

Snotty Noses- colds and flu often trigger asthma attacks.

Puffing on their reliever inhaler (usually blue) three or more times a week.

While you wait for the ambulance, help them sit up and give a puff of their reliever inhaler every 30-60 seconds - you can give them up to 10 puffs.

Coughing and/or wheezing at night and in the early mornings.

Breathlessness- if they are pausing for breath when talking or struggling to keep up with friends, that’s a sign.

If the ambulance takes longer than 15 minutes, you can give your child 10 more puffs of their reliever inhaler.

They might say their tummy or chest hurts –get to know your child’s individual asthma signs.

Remember to give your inhaler a good shake between doses (puff) and then wait 30-60 seconds before taking the next puff.

Know what to do if your child’s symptoms are getting worse

Brush your teeth, rinse out your mouth or gargle and spit out, after using your preventer inhaler.

If using a face mask with your spacer device, remember to wash your babies face after using a preventer inhaler.

Give between two and six puffs of their reliever inhaler, through a spacer, every four hours. Space the puffs out so there are 30-60 seconds between them.

Make a same-day appointment with your child's GP.

If the surgery is closed, call 111 for advice.

If you have any questions, you can call Asthma UK for advice on 0300 222 5800 (Mon – Fri; 9am – 5pm). You can also visit their child asthma advice on line at www.asthma.org.uk.
