Some Do's and Dont's of Post-Natal Exercise DO: • Get the all-clear from your GP approx. 6-8 weeks after the birth (10 wks after a C- section.) • Remember it can take 12 months not 12 weeks to get back into shape. • Wear a good sports bra. • Drink plenty of water before, during and after exercise, especially if you’re breastfeeding. • Exercise your pelvic floor regularly. • Focus on good technique and alignment.
4
DON’T: • Despair over celebrity weight loss stories. • Overdo it. If your baby has been up all night and you’ve had no sleep, rest. • Make do with your old trainers if they don’t provide sufficient support. • Do sit-ups and crunches. Exercise your tummy muscles in an upright, functional position. • Push your stretches further to increase flexibility.

This year has been a tough one as far as vegetable growing is concerned. All our little seedlings have struggled with the wind and the rain and have looked rather sorry for themselves during the spring. Then June came along and the temperatures rose, the gales were replaced with gentle breezes and it felt like summer had arrived. There’s been a burst of growth in the fields and all our summer favourites are starting to appear in the Healthy Boxes and they are all the more welcome for their delayed arrival. Our particular seasonal choices, all grown locally of course, are earthy new potatoes, leafy spinach, bunched salad onions and the first pick of sweet baby carrots. Why not try using some of these great ingredients in a summer frittata, see our website. The children who have visited our farm are always fascinated to see how things grow. Why not try growing some leafy herbs in pots on the window sill? They are fast growing and fairly foolproof too. If these work try moving on to some mixed salad leaves, spinach or rocket. Small containers make for a much easier growing environment for little farmers! Healthy Boxes are available all over West Cornwall so if you’d like to find out how to get all these locally grown, fresh vegetables delivered to you just get in touch or take a look at our web site – www.healthyboxes.co.uk. We are on facebook and twitter too for all the very latest updates. New customers are welcome to join us – there’s no comittment to take a box every week – just try one and see what you think. You’ll soon be hooked!

On the beach
STAYING SAFE
Top tips:
Having toddlers on a beach especially in the peak season when they are crowded can be very challenging. Families with young children are recommended to choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags, where the lifeguards can see you. We are lucky enough to have many of our local beaches guarded.
- Always swim at a lifeguarded beach - swim between red and yellow flags - know your flags - if you get into trouble, stick your hand in the air and shout HELP - if you see someone else in trouble, get the lifeguard - if you can’t see a lifeguard call 999 or 112 and ask for coastguard - find out about the beach you’re going to before you visit - check tide times - read and obey local hazard signs
One tip recommended to me on a sunny, busy day, put a rubber wrist band around your child’s ankle with your name and contact details on and put a flag on your beach tent and show your child this.
In the sun Sun protection for children is especially important - particularly here in Cornwall! Here are some points which, if followed, will minimize the risks of sunburn and potential skin problems subsequently. General Advice: Be aware that burning can occur from sun reflected off - for example - the sea. Children are more likely to burn, with childhood burning relatively more damaging - as well as risky - for subsequent skin problems.
8
Specific Advice: Keep children in the shade between 11.00am and 3.00pm on the sunniest days. Babies should always be kept in the shade. Be wary of exposing children under 3 years to any prolonged direct sunlight. Cover children with appropriate clothing, wide brimmed hats (with neck protection), sunglasses and UV suits if appropriate even on a cloudy/overcast day Encourage children to develop good habits regarding care in the sun - which will then usually persist to adulthood!

Which local beaches have life guards?
St Ives; Carbis Bay; Porthmeor; Porthminster; Praa Sands; Gunwalloe, Lizard; Sennen; Kennack Lizard Marazion; Pollurrian Cove near Mullion; Poldu Cove; Porthcurno; Porthleven Beach; Tolcarne Nr Penzance
Supplied by RNLI Know your flags: Red and Yellow:- area patrolled, safest area to swim, bodyboard and use inflatable’s Black and white:- zoned area for surfboards and kayaks Red Flag:- DANGER, NEVER enter the water under any circumstances Orange windsock:- offshore winds, NEVER use an inflatable
Use sunscreen with good UVA (star system) and good UVB (sun protection factor - SPF- system) protection: minimum 4 stars and SPF 15 (preferably 5 stars and SPF 30+) for children with specific formulations for babies. Consider also specific children's formulations as these are less likely to cause irritation or contact allergy. Apply regularly and generously with particular emphasis on areas such as the face, ears, neck, chest and feet. Reapply after sweating, swimming or if rubbed off and / or as directed by the formulations' instructions (usually every 2-3 hours).
Do not use sun protection products past "use by" dates as they may not work effectively. Usually this is 2-3 years. Written by Dr Simon Wearne MA(Oxon.) MBBS MRCGP General Practitioner

Every other month we welcome you to attend our Nappacinno morning at the Funky Monkey Pants office. We'll be doing a demonstration to show how to use cloth nappies; ideal for people not in the know about cloth nappies and who want to learn more about trying them for the first time. After the demonstration is finished there will be a chance for everyone to meet together and for new users to speak to other cloth nappy users. We have lots on display for you to see. Our Nappuccino mornings are held at The Old Cattle Market Business Space in Helston, upstairs in Office Space 2. There is a lift available if anybody needs it.

Tots
in the kitchen
I am planning to write a regular column in Tots About featuring a 'healthy' recipe or snack that our children can enjoy. Now just to set the scene, I am a mother of three pre-schoolers, a 4, 2 and 1 year old. I am not some sort of purple sprouting yummy mummy but instead just an over stretched Mum (that is, over stretched in many departments but particularly time and waistline!) that would love to get her children to eat more healthily. Sugar for many people is an addictive slippery slope and even at the ripe old age of 2 and 4, I am starting to see how my children would do anything for their sweet fix. So with the prospect of foregoing an easy bribing tool, I feel an obligation to support my children in making healthier food choices.
Now this is day one so I cannot expect them to be ingesting a beetroot smoothie on ice on the pretext that it is pink and sparkly but I have seen them demolish these Cocoa Energy Bites as though they were the latest Cadbury's stocking filler. They are packed full of the protein and fibre that help to prevent the blood sugar blues and are so easy to make (particularly with little helpers) and although I've only stuck to the recipe so far, I feel the possibilities for including nuts, other fruits and seeds are endless. written by Vicki Hugh-Jones with a little help from her tots
Chocolate Energy Bites
(makes 10-12) Ingredients 50g dried cranberries 50g dried blueberries (or use more cranberries) 15 Medjool dates, stoned 30g raw sunflower seeds 30g cacao powder (raw if you have it) 2 tsp coconut oil 45g raw cacao chocolate bar (optional for topping) Method:
1. Combine all ingredients (apart from the bar of raw cacao) in a food processor until you get a dough-like consistency. Then roll the mixture into approximately 12 small balls. 2. Next, gently melt the raw cacao bar and spoon a small amount on top of each ball. Decorate with an extra dried cranberry on top if you wish. 3. Transfer to the fridge until set! Test 7: Conversations with children Repeat everything you say at least five times. Test 8: Grocery shopping 1. Go to the local supermarket. Take with you the nearest thing you can find to a pre-school child — a fully grown goat is excellent. If you intend to have more than one child, take more than one goat. 2. Buy your weekly groceries — without letting the goat(s) out of your sight. 3. Pay for everything the goat eats or destroys. Until you can easily accomplish this, do not even contemplate having children.

Test 9: Feeding a one-year-old 1. Hollow out a melon. 2. Make a small hole in the side. 3. Suspend the melon from the ceiling and swing it from side to side. 4. Get a bowl of soggy cornflakes and attempt to spoon them into the swaying melon while pretending to be an aeroplane. 5. Continue until half the cornflakes are gone. 6. Tip the rest into your lap, making sure most of it falls on the floor. Test 10: TV 1. Learn the names of every character from the In The Night Garden, Barney, Teletubbies and Disney. 2. Watch nothing else on TV for at least five years. Test 11: Conversations with adults 1. Start talking to an adult of your choice. 2. Have someone else continually tug on your skirt hem or shirt sleeve while playing the Mummy tape listed above.

Tots About interviewed photographer Claire Hoskens
If my child/baby is crying what happens? I take time with very small children to ensure they are comfortable with me and the setting, I have a variety of toys to settle and ease children and before you know it we have some great shots of them playing and laughing without them realising it. For newborn babies I allow time for feeding, changing and getting baby to sleep.
What can a client expect at a photo shoot with Claire Hoskens? A relaxed and fun environment with no pressure to buy. The best advantage I have is that I am a mum and a childminder so I know how If my child doesn’t want their photo taking on the day to work, play and communicate with children of all ages. what will happen? It is extremely rare for that to happen. I have always been able to How long does a photo shoot take? coax even the most reluctant children into some great shots. If it’s For newborn babies (under 3 weeks old) they can take 2-4 hours to easier I get the mum or dad to sit with them and play with them ensure they are fully asleep for the various poses. They take as long for a while until they become more confident. Sessions may be or as short as required to get that treasured shot. rescheduled due to illness or injury. What space do you need? I have a studio for family groups .Babies and small children are done at my house where it's warm and comforting for both children and parents so everyone is relaxed. However, if there is a special place to you I can do sessions on location*, for example the beach, park, woods, or on a farm.
Is your service expensive? No I provide an affordable service. A family photo shoot starts at £50 with many other affordable options. I offer a treasured moments scheme too, which is very exciting, capturing a child in the space of a year.

Swimming for little tiddlers
WEEKLY
LOCAL
CLASSES
Every parent has a view on swimming lessons. So where does the truth lie? What's the best age to learn to swim? How should they learn? And how do you find the best lessons? "As long as they feel safe, babies are comfortable in the water almost from the minute they are born," explains Jon Glenn, head of children and young people at the ASA, the National Governing body for swimming. "Don't forget they are swimming in fluid in the womb for nine months."

6 months olds is normally the time when most parents will consider taking their baby to swimming lessons. Babies/toddlers learn core aquatic skills including buoyancy, balance, streamlining and how to travel. Stick with it and by the time they are toddlers, they may well be able to swim without buoyancy aids in these sessions. If you don't want to wait until your baby is six months old, you can start earlier. Water Babies, for example, has taught babies from as young as two days old, although normally they start at around six weeks. Swimming from birth is excellent for babies’ development, providing a complete physical workout which in turn aids the development of the brain. What’s more, regular swimming can enhance their awareness and improve eating and sleeping patterns – a definite bonus! Living in Cornwall adds the extra motive to learn to swim too. Water Babies have started lessons in St Ives. For more information call 01752 605627 email bubbasurf@waterbabies.co.uk or visit www.waterbabies.co.uk .
