healthy eating for under 5's Being overweight is bad for your child’s health now and in the future and can lead to a risk of a range of health problems including high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. However, you can do a lot to help your child achieve and maintain a healthy weight. A registered dietitian has provided the following advice. Just like adults, children become overweight when they consume more energy (in the form of calories) than they use. But, unlike adults, children are still growing and that means they need more energy for growth. It’s crucial that they receive this energy from nutritious, healthy food, and not from foods filled with saturated fat and sugar. The best way to get your child to eat healthily is to lead by example. If your child is overweight, think about attitudes to food in your house. Do you eat together as a family, or grab snacks on the go? Is the television on at mealtimes, distractions can lead to overeating? Do you prepare food yourself or rely on supermarket ready meals? Establish a regular pattern of meals so the whole family can enjoy mealtimes together, instead of allowing your child to snack whenever they feel like it. Cook the same food for everybody even if it's not possible for everybody to eat at the same time.
Follow these healthy eating principles: • Base your meals on starchy carbohydrates, such as bread, pasta, rice and potatoes. • Eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. • Eat lean proteins such as meat, fish, eggs, beans, pulses and lentils. • Cut down on saturated fat (found in processed meats, pies, cakes and biscuits). • Cut down on sugary foods such as biscuits, cakes and fizzy drinks. • Cut out sugary drinks like sweetened fruit juices and fizzy drinks, and if you give your child unsweetened fruit juice, dilute it with water (be careful of smoothies, they are very high in fruit sugars) • Cut down on salt, both in cooking and at the table. Most children over four eat too much salt. Supermarket ready meals and processed meats are often high in salt, so check food labels when you buy.

Use healthy snacks such as fruit or a glass of milk in between meals. Only give them sugary foods such as biscuits, chocolate and cakes occasionally. Calcium is important for children, so ensure your child has three portions of calcium a day e.g. cheese, yoghurt, milk. From the age of two onwards you can use semi-skimmed milk but fully skimmed milk is not suitable until the age of five. If you have a fussy eater, a healthy diet can be difficult. Try to change your child’s eating habits one step at a time. 1) look at the eating habits of the rest of the family as these may be copied by your child. If you're not eating vegetables, your child is unlikely to. 2) Praise your child for trying new foods, but don’t criticise them if they don’t. 3) Mealtimes should be fun not stressful, why not try some healthy fun foods such as vegetable fingers & dips or noodles. Being active is also part of the equation. Children who can walk on their own should be physically active every day for at least 180 minutes (3 hours), spread throughout the day, indoors or out. Watching TV, travelling by car, bus or train or being strapped into a buggy for long periods isn't good for a child's health and development. written by Katie Evans, children’s fitness specialist (Healthy Young Hearts)

Tots About Music
Tots About spoke to Thalia from Music For Little One’s about why music is important from an early age.
Having worked with babies and young children for many years now I love seeing the difference singing and making music with them makes - a baby's face lighting up as they recognise a particular song or 'banging' on an instrument to accompany some music with complete abandon cannot help but make you smile. They quickly understand and respond to the play and pattern of simple songs- it really is second nature to them - but then when you think that one of baby’s first experiences in the womb is hearing and feeling comforted by the steady rhythm of your heart it makes sense. Some of the many benefits include the development of: 1) speech and language 2) social skills inc. taking turns, joining in, listening 3) problem solving 4) memory skills 5) creativity 6) self esteem 7) learning to express themselves 8) improvement of self confidence. Many nursery rhymes feature simple intervals and pitches that echo the first sounds a child makes (think nuh-nuh nu-nuh-nuh when a child puts their thumb to their nose) ; then sing 'it's raining it's pouring' and you'll get the idea. These nursery rhymes really do help children to 'find their voices' so whenever you're sat there singing for the millionth time ' the wheels on the bus!' to a chorus of 'again/ gain, gain!' just think how you are really helping them to be confident with their voices. Think of all the processes that they are actually going through to 'learn a song' and it's actually pretty amazing. As a musician and as a mother (with a pretty dodgy memory now) I'm constantly astounded and in awe of their natural ability. Thalia offers music classes on a Saturday in Paul. See club and classes section and you can win a free half terms worth in our competition on page 11.

Tots About After the most heavenly Summer spent hanging out on the beach with my toddlers, it’s back to reality with a bump. Gone are those hedonistic times of fobbing them off with an ice-cream for lunch and instead some serious thought, planning and creativity now needs to come into play – it’s time to start thinking outside of the ‘lunch’ box when it comes to our packed meals. I’m a firm believer that our little ones will (a) eat if they’re hungry and (b) generally eat anything as long as you’re not taking any notice! So perhaps the packed lunch is the perfect opportunity to slip in as many healthy offerings as possible. Surely just by the law of averages, half is going to be consumed?

One nice little variant is what’s referred to in our household as “chicken on a stick”. We generally cook the chicken pieces up for dinner and any leftovers are promptly skewered on a lollipop stick (available from most cookery shops) and become a fun way to get some lunchtime protein into them – essential for their afternoon concentration and energy levels. They’re very simple to make and certainly the coating of the chicken in popcorn is great fun for the kids. written by Vicki Hugh-Jones with a little help from her tots
Popcorn Crusted Chicken on a Stick Ingredients 30g plain popped popcorn 1 garlic crushed clove ¼ teaspoon salt (as desired) 150g plain flour 1. 2. 3. 4.
1 large egg beaten 450g chicken strips 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 tablespoon butter
Line a large baking sheet with foil or parchment In a food processor, blend popcorn, garlic and salt until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Place flour in a separate bowl and the beaten egg in another. Dredge each chicken piece in flour, then in the egg and finally in the popcorn crumbs, turning to coat.
5. Transfer to baking sheet and repeat with remaining chicken. 6. In a large frying pan, heat the oil and butter and when melted cook the chicken turning once until it is well browned both sides and cooked through (approx 8 mins in total). Try not to overcrowd the pan. 7. When cold skewer each chicken strip with a lollipop stick and enjoy!

Active Autumn Fun Playing outdoors is very important for children, not only to help them stay active and healthy but also to create those treasured childhood memories. We need to encourage an adventurous spirit and create imaginative and safe opportunities for them to get out there. Cath Prisk Director of Play England, a Uk wide charitable organization who promote outdoor play for children said “It’s a sad reality that many kids don’t get outside to play every day anymore.” 180mins of activity per day is expected for toddlers so with Autumn upon us, get the rainproof suits and wellies on and enjoy the wonderful space we have around us. According to research modern day children play half as much as their parents did when they were young. In 1970’s/80s children enjoyed 2hrs of outside play each day in the week and 9hrs at weekends but now its 1 hr each day in the week and less than 5hrs at the weekend.
Try these seasonal outdoor activities: • What’s the time Mrs Witch • Pirate Treasure hunt (take a magnifiying glass and binoculars) :– decorate an egg box for the treasure chest, make a list of things to find:- leaf for an eye patch; sticks for a sword fight; shiny leaves and petal heads for gold, something heavy to anchor the ship, hook shaped twig, find a birds nest as a lookout, a feather from the pirates parrot, fallen twigs that indicate x marks the spot
