What’s for dinner tonight?
NO FOOD and NO MONEY to buy any?
THE FOOD BANK can help. Well Winter is here and after an amazing Summer I don’t actually mind the cold this year including wiping the frost off the windscreen. This is the 4th edition which gives me my first complete year. I have loved seeing the magazine grow, meeting wonderful people on my new journey, and finding out great things to do with your little one’s.
THE FOOD BANK can provide emergency supplies. Contact your doctor’s surgery, nursery, health visitor, social worker, Church Minister or one of the area’s other voluntary sector workers to discuss your situation. They can give you a voucher to obtain food.
Tots About is now in Truro and Falmouth which I am very excited about and is now a bump to 5 guide with essential pregnancy guidance.
It’s quick, simple and anonymous.
Keep sharing us on facebook and please let me know if you would like to promote a non-for-profit event or know of a baby/toddler group in your area. Well done to the Autumn competition winners.

Birth Options in Cornwall Hello readers! I’m Evony Lynch, freelance midwife in Cornwall and Chief TeaDrinker at MamaCafe. I am supporting the Tots About Magazine, covering pregnancy to 5 and will be writing regular articles on pregnancy topics Over 4000 babies are born in Cornwall each year, most in hospital in Truro. But did you know you have other choices? If you and your baby are well and you do not have any additional risk factors then you could birth your baby at home or in a birth centre. This is a great choice if you’re keen to have a natural, active birth. Research has found that home and birth centres are as safe as hospital birth for healthy women having a straightforward pregnancy. Choosing a home birth means you’re in your own environment, the midwives come to you in labour, and they can offer gas and air too. Lots of women have their own pool at home. Helston Birth Unit has a birth pool, gas and air and pethidine available for pain relief. Community midwives care for you during the birth of your baby but as there is no postnatal care facility here you will go home around two hours after the birth if all is well. Please bare in mind they take only one woman at a time. Penrice Birth Unit is based in St Austell, offering a birth pool, gas and air and pethidine for pain relief. Care is provided by midwives based at Penrice and they can accommodate up to four women in labour. If there were
any concerns about you or your baby during labour at home or in the birth units you would be transferred to Treliske via ambulance. There are no neonatal or emergency facilities at the birth units. The delivery suite at Treliske has the options of gas and air, pethidine and Epidural for pain relief and you have emergency facilities all on site. Sadly there is no birth pool here yet, but there are plans for a new birth unit next year! Planned caesareans and all inductions are carried out here. If you have any risk factors it may be advised to give birth here, but you can still have an active birth if that’s what you’d like. You may just want all the drugs...and that’s available too! Don’t forget to pop into MamaCafe online sometime for more information!

Osteopathy & Cranial Osteopathy Osteopathy and Cranial Osteopathy can be helpful in understanding why a couple may be experiencing difficulty in achieving conception. Couples discuss their concerns in depth which gives the Osteopath time to explore their health from an Osteopathic perspective, along with a gentle examination using the principles of treatment unique to Osteopathy, applying gentle touch to receive information from the body to know where there may be restriction or ‘blocks’ in the anatomy and physiology which may prevent optimal expression of health. Osteopathic techniques can be helpful in supporting the health in a way that disturbance in physiology may be alleviated and resolved. Pregnancy is a time of rapid change in the physiology of mother and baby, including changes in mother’s posture, so the wise and gentle touch of the Osteopath can help to resolve spinal discomfort; bladder irritability and digestive difficulty e.g. heartburn or nausea by supporting the physiologic adaptations the mother and baby are making. Posture changes can be supported by gentle Osteopathic techniques. During different stages of pregnancy and baby’s growth, the pelvic girdle and spine adapt accordingly. These natural changes can become more difficult if there are underlying strains in the body making it harder for the body to adapt easily, and ‘pubic symphysis dysfunction’ or ‘pelvic girdle dysfunction’ can occur. Gentle osteopathic techniques can be used to enable the release of strain and restriction so the body can make these natural changes more comfortably. Osteopathy can be helpful where a mother experiences miscarriage by supporting the physiologic processes and providing emotional care for well-being. What to expect? A gentle, detailed and comprehensive case history is taken and you may be asked to undress to underwear for physical examination. A chaperone can be provided. Time is taken to gently assess posture, the musculoskeletal system and underlying health, using clinical tests and the palpation skills of the Osteopath. The Osteopath can contact, with written consent the midwife, GP or health visitor to share relevant information to ensure optimal health.
Osteopaths complete 4 or 5 years full time training with a comprehensive study of anatomy and dissection, physiology, pathology, neurology, clinical medicine, and Osteopathic principles and practice alongside completion of thousands of hours of clinical training prior to graduation. In the UK, Osteopaths must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council and adhere to a strict code of ethics, hold professional insurance and be committed to their continue professional training. Carolyn McGregor is a Registered Osteopath with the General Osteopathic Council and a Registered Homoeopath with the Society of Homeopaths specialising in Cranial Osteopathy for Pregnancy, Labour, the New-born and Older Child and teaches in this field.

4 Steps to Happy Tooth decay can have a surprisingly profound effect on your child’s development, and can quickly snowball at an alarming rate. Pain and discomfort effects eating and sleeping patterns, which in turn can affect nutrition, healthy growth and healthy weight gain. When in pain, your child’s ability to concentrate can also be affected having a knock on effect on learning at school or nursery. The good news! Tooth decay is largely preventable and here are the 4 main steps to healthy smiles; Tooth brushing: • Brush your baby’s teeth as soon as they erupt into the mouth • Continue to brush your child’s teeth for them until they are at least 7 years old – it’s a battle worth having in the long run. • Always brush twice a day, Do not give anything sugary after the last night time brush. • Use a systematic approach; Outside, inside and biting surfaces. Include gums too. • Spit out the excess toothpaste after brushing but not to rinse as this washes away the fluoride • Cradling their chin in your hand should also help you reach all areas of their mouth. • Encouragement and praise always helps – see Aquafresh website for some ideas Diet: Reduce how often you give drinks and food containing sugar to your child. Every time sugar enters the mouth, the teeth suffer an acid attack. They need a break between attacks to stay healthy. Sugar is ok in small amounts at meal times but not in snacks between meals. Only give water or milk between meals – cordials, squashes, fizzy drinks, baby drinks, flavoured water,

flavoured milk, fruit juice and smoothies all contain sugars so should be confined to meal times only and should never be put in a babies bottle as this can cause severe decay. Dilute fresh fruit juice one part juice to 10 parts water and encourage the use of a straw. Try to avoid giving sweetened foods right from weaning – they can encourage a sweet tooth. Be careful to keep snacks small though, too much snack food can make your child fussy and not interested at mealtimes. Processed foods often contain a lot of sugar – check the labels for glucose, fructose, maltose and sucrose and try to limit your child’s total intake to 30g a day. One can of baked beans contains 20g of sugar, a glass of fresh orange juice contains 20g and one Fruit Shoot contains 30g!! surprisingly! Fluoride: Fluoride hardens tooth enamel thus making it more resistant to decay. Fluoride is not added to the water supply in the West Country so it is important that you and your children use fluoride toothpaste twice a day. Children under 3 should use toothpaste no less than 1000ppm (parts per million) fluoride. Adults and children over 3 should use toothpaste 1350-1500ppm fluoride. There are some lovely flavours available other than mint but just make sure the fluoride content is correct.

y Healthy Smiles High concentration fluoride varnish can be applied to children’s teeth by a dental professional as a preventative measure. Recommended amounts of fluoride toothpaste should be used: 0-3 year-olds: smear that covers less than ¾ of the brush; 3-6 year olds : a pea-sized amount Visit the Dentist: Prevention is better than cure – nip those early signs of decay in the bud with regular dental check-ups. Often fillings, crowns and extractions can be prevented with fluoride varnish application or fissure sealants (a plastic coating applied to the biting surface of molar teeth) early on. Most of
us have an unpleasant experience at the dentist we can recall and nerves associated with it – try not to let that rub off on your child, chances are if you’re taking them regularly they won’t have to go through too many unpleasentries. Regular visits will build your child’s confidence reducing the likelihood of them feeling too worried. All NHS treatment is free for under 18’s visit www.nhs.uk/dentists to find your local NHS practice. Finally – thanks for reading this and if you have any questions ask your dentist or have a read of the British Dental Health Foundation’s website www.dentalhealth.org .
