What's in a Hospital Bag? Hello readers! I’m Evony Lynch, freelance midwife and Chief Tea-Drinker at MamaCafe If you’re pregnant at the moment, have you packed your birth bag yet? Whether you’re planning to have your baby at home, hospital or birth centre it’s a good idea to pop some essentials in a bag by 36 weeks so that you grab and go if you need to. Take three bags, and they don’t have to be huge! One for you, one for your partner and one for baby. Of course there are the essentials to take which are on all the lists – nightie/T shirt, old knicks, mahoosive sanitary pads, toiletries, baby clothes, nappies, snacks and water. How about some little extras too?

For you a lip salve can ease dry lips from puffing on the gas and air. Hairbands to tie back long hair when the going gets tough and a cool flannel on your head can be so soothing. A water spray can freshen you up when you’re feeling tired. A birth ball is a great way to stay mobile during labour. Think of your environment. Just because you’re going to hospital doesn’t mean you can’t make the room feel more like home. Feeling more relaxed helps the hormones to flow. The more relaxed you are the more you can cope with labour. A favourite pillow, with your own smells from home, a snuggly blanket, gentle room scent and some battery powered tea lights can create a sense of calm, and help you zone out from the clinical atmosphere around you. Don’t forget your music too. All the rooms have CD players and it has been shown this can help you relax more in labour. Don’t forget your car seat too for the journey home. Pop into MamaCafe at The Melting Pot in Redruth or online at www.mamacafe.org.uk for more info and tips.

Osteopathy and Birth Gentle touch of an Osteopath can be of tremendous comfort, in preparing for, during and after birth. My own wonderful adventure as an Osteopath began 23 years ago, at the Osteopathic Centre for Children in London, providing Osteopathy for mums and babes during pregnancy and soon after birth. Gradually experience shaped me and the mums I saw in pregnancy asked if I could attend the birth too. For me, working with the health of a person is a sacred act and comes about through trust; working with permission and good communication. Gentle, wise techniques of palpation and touch by the Osteopath enable the body to convey how the health is working ‘in the moment’. The wisdom of the body in its self-regulating, self-healing abilities surpasses all else. The Osteopath’s hands communicates with this innate body wisdom to understand the positioning of the babe, placenta, cord within the vitality of the amniotic fluids, and the well-being of the mother; exploring with mum what her body needs for healthy and efficient birthing. Aches, pains and physical strains can be resolved with Osteopathic technique and becomes a beautiful way of preparing for birth. During birth, an Osteopath can assist with optimal positioning for babe and mum, providing the subtle and supportive techniques often known as ‘Cranial Osteopathy’ assisting the healing and release of strains within back and pelvis during active labour. A quiet partnership between Osteopath, mum and babe provides both parents and midwife with a gentle, nonintrusive and timely understanding of how the baby is turning, descending and preparing for

6

birth. Enabling the mother to tune in to how her contractions are working for her, judge timing and work with breath and body positioning, alongside the experienced midwife, to empower both parents to trust the wisdom of their child as it prepares for birth.

Toddlers: The tears and the tantrums Toddlers strive to be independent but they can also find it frustrating; demonstrating determined independence to helplessness or refusal! They want to please but also test the limit, and feel a sense of power to match their emerging independence. Who’s had the screaming toddler in the supermarket, church, in a queue, on a walkway, in the car, on a plane? I can put my hand up to all of those and I have the stress lines on my face to show it. (Give limited choices; Be playful; get the toddler started on the task to be done)

However, … Option 1: No means no! Don’t give in to unreasonable demands but do choose your battles carefully. Be clear about what the boundaries are in your family and as they say “don’t sweat the small stuff”. If you are happy to give your child sweets at the checkout, just reinforce that they ask properly. A tantrum is not an acceptable form of communication when asking for sweets! Be very careful that you don’t reward tantrums or other forms of undesirable behaviour.

Helpful tips to manage the tantrum! Preparation. Some need to know ahead of time what will be happening if its not part of the daily routine (or sometimes even if it is!). Keep them well informed about big events such as moving house, going to the doctors. Make sure their basic needs are met: not tired or hungry. So many tantrums seem to happen in public! This is the time when as parents we feel the most vulnerable…You’re thinking “Oh dear, an audience” and your toddler will learn this is peak time to get what he wants depending on how you react. Its time to consider your options! (Are you nodding to this one?) Deep breath, but don’t be embarrassed…we’ve all been there! Don’t give in to the tuts and the glare. Someone in that supermarket, has great empathy! Keep calm. Why are they having a tantrum? Is there anything reasonable that you can do? Boredom or seeking attention? If so give it!

Option 2: Ignore it. Well, yes fine at home, not so good in the supermarket Option 3: Distraction. This works really well for young children or if they are bored and simply wanting stimulation. It has been known to work on adults too! Option 4: This is real. Its happening! Don’t try to reason with your toddler but you could try empathy. “I can see that you’re tired (angry, upset)…” And when it’s over…Be available to help your child reconnect with the world. Talk it through in simple language. Re-enforce the positive aspect that they have calmed down Find words that express the feelings “I know you were really angry that you couldn’t have the sweets. Tomorrow is sweetie day” Written by Kate Elliott-Cannon, Early Years Development Manager, YMCA Cornwall

Competition time We have a fantastic prize this issue, courtesy of Paradise Park in Hayle You can win 2 family tickets, entry for 4 people, to Cornwall's top wildlife sanctuary and Jungle Barn indoor play centre. Valid until 31st October 2014 Please fill out the quick survey on www.totsabout.co.uk by 9th June to be entered into the prize draw Your feedback is very important to the magazines development. Tots About I’m a firm believer that a child will monitor their own food intake and therefore I don’t get too concerned that some meals are more successful than others as over the course of a week, I’m sure they will at the very least have eaten enough calories. What I’m not so sure about is the quality of those calories! And as I start to scrutinize their intake, I realize that my 5 year old son appears to be ingesting nothing but cereals. He can quite easily polish off two bowls of cereal at breakfast yet when it comes to the home cooked evening meal, I’m lucky if its two spoonfuls!

big improvement in my runs when I start the day off properly, rather than having a couple of oatcakes in the car. A high energy smoothie needs fruit for carbs and also benefits from a dose of healthy protein, such as ground seeds and is always a winner with the children. written by Vickie Hugh-Jones with a little help from her tots

So, if breakfast is his main meal then it’s time to make it as nutritious as possible. I’ve been doing a bit of running lately and have noticed a

The ‘Not so Smooth’ Smoothie Ingredients ½ cup milk or milk substitute (almond, soya, rice, oat) ½ cup fruit juice with no added sugar ½ banana ½ cup frozen berries 2 tablespoons ground seed mix (eg. Linseed, flaxseed, sunflower, pumpkin, sesame) I like my smoothie to be ‘rough round the edges’ so I don’t bother pre-grinding my seeds and just blend all the ingredients together but if you’re looking to disguise the seeds from unsuspecting little ones then they are easy to grind using a mortar and pestle or coffee grinder.

Tots Feet

by Kate Harrington Happy Little Soles

One of the big milestones we all look forward to as parents is our little one starting to learn to walk. However before you rush out for those first shoes it is worth taking the time to consider what is going on in those precious feet. Each little foot is amazing, there are 26 bones, 19 muscles, 107 ligaments plus an array of delicate blood vessels, nerves and tissue fibres all working together to control its movement. Bones start out as soft cartilage and it isn’t until the child reaches adulthood that the foot is fully developed. This means that a child’s foot is very susceptible to moulding and damage and the right footwear is vital.

In fact medical experts worldwide now agree that the less time a child spends in shoes the better and that we leave it as long as possible before putting our new walker into their first shoes. Barefoot walking is the very best thing for healthy foot development; however it isn’t always practical in our cold and wet climate. So when you are finally ready for shoes, what should you look for? A child’s shoe should be lightweight and with a flexible sole to mimic barefoot walking. The shoe should have a wide toe box to give lots of wriggle room. The shoe should be shaped like a child’s foot which isn’t just a scaled down version of an adults foot but much more triangular in shape. Even when they have shoes you should encourage them to walk barefoot as much as possible. Children very instinctively and naturally want to be barefoot, how many of us have despaired over the discarded socks that litter the house or the shoes lost after being thrown out of the pushchair? So whenever the ground is safe enough let them roam as nature intended and celebrate their barefoot instincts!

Information Sheet 1

Fever & Temperatures Babies and Children often suffer with high temperatures, which can cause parents concern and children discomfort. It can also be a sign of serious illness so acting fast and escalating your concern is vital. Cornwall Resus talk you through the do’s and don'ts and offer some expert advice: 1. Try not to over or under dress your baby, generally young babies require 2 additional layers of clothing to adults. (i.e. a vest and a blanket extra to normal day clothes) 2. Never put your baby to bed in their day clothes, they can be too restrictive and easily overheat. 3. Always check their tummy or back when assessing if they are hot. This is a better indicator of core temperature. 4. Blue or cold hands and feet don’t always mean your baby /child is cold- it can often be a sign their temperature is rising so always check with a thermometer. 5. Tympanic (ear) thermometers are not reliable in under one year olds. They can also be expensive. A simple under arm digital thermometer is reliable and cheap. 6. Normal temperature is 36-37 degrees Celsius, anything persistantly above or below this needs to be monitored. Normal temperature varies in different age groups, it is always best to seek medical attention if you are worried.

8. Give regular fluids. Breast milk if the baby is breast fed. 9. Give a child's dose (if old enough) of either Paracetamol or Ibuprofen for discomfort or distress but not for the sole reason of reducing the temperature. 10. Monitor for signs of dehydration: sunken fontenelle, sunken eyes, dry mouth or a reduced amount of urine output. 11. Seek further help if your baby / child develops a rash, appears less well, the temperature lasts more than 5 days, or they have a decreased fluid intake. MOST IMPORTANTLY seek medical help if you are worried, parents have a natural instinct when their child is ill, don’t be afraid to act on it! 7. Tepid sponging is NOT recommended , reduce clothing and allow your baby or child to cool down naturally.
