Sleeptime Hello again from MamaCafe, Being a mum to a little baby is supposed to be a wonderful time when you watch your new baby grow and develop before your eyes. But in reality you’re often walking around in a sleep deprived haze hardly able to string a sentence together!
Hello readers! I’m Evony Lynch, freelance midwife and Chief Tea-Drinker at MamaCafe
What can you do? •
Tiny babies want to be cuddled and close to you – it’s their survival instinct. Don’t feel you have to get them into a routine from day 1! Lots of love and skin to skin with help them get used to the world around them and soon they will settle in their cot or moses basket.
•
Solely breastfed babies can safely bed share with you. It can make breastfeeding a little easier. Just follow the safe bed sharing rules such as separate cover for baby, and avoid if smoking, drinking or taking strong medication.
•
Have you started a bedtime routine? A warm gentle bath time followed by a gentle massage then a quiet night time routine helps tell your baby its sleep time now. This routine may help them drift off to sleep easier, and help them stay asleep for longer too. Plus it becomes a special bonding time for you and your baby.
•
‘Womb’ music or white noise sounds may help in the early days then lullabies and soothing sounds as they get older.
•
Leave one of your T-shirts near them as a familiar scent – they know you’re never far away.
•
Talk to your health visitor. If you’re feeling really stressed by your little one’s sleep habits then they may be able to suggest some different ways to cope and improve things.
Find out more about our antenatal and postnatal classes online at www.mamacafe.co.uk and get more hot tips for your bun in the oven and baby bun.

DISCOVER LIGHTERLIFE The world is gradually waking up to what LighterLife has known all along – the key to successful weight management is as much, if not more, to do with what’s going in a person’s head as to what’s going into their mouth. Founded in 1989 by women with a weight problem looking to understand what is needed for long term weight maintenance, as well as fast effective weight loss, LighterLife is passionate about helping people and offers tailored programmes with no calorie counting and no fuss. Clients have the opportunity to attend a weekly group session of no more than 12 people. Under the guidance of a trained Counsellor, the group work helps them understand why they have a problem with overeating and to change their mindset towards food in the future. Described by clients as their ‘safe place’ and ‘the only place they can be honest about their behaviours’, this invaluable group work explores weight issues such as recognising the difference between physical and psychological hunger, the use of food to manage emotions, and difficulties in maintaining boundaries. Once a client reaches their goal weight, a long-term management phase is offered, with conventional food gradually reintroduced, allowing people to recognise both the emotional and physical issues they may have around certain foodstuffs. To enquire or book a free, no obligation consultation, call Jan Badger on 01872 223700 or take a look at our website www. lighterlife.com

Encouraging your tots to try new food Did you know that an infant has around 30,000 taste buds in their mouths, compared to an adult who has about 10,000? Therefore, a child’s eating experience is incredibly sensory. These taste buds are constantly developing and changing with age. However, even when you know this, as a parent, you still worry about your little ones eating habits, even more so if your child is less adventurous with food. I do not like using the term ‘picky eater’ because developing tastes takes time. Research shows that children need to taste a new food on average between 7 to 12 times before accepting it.
Here are a few ideas that may help to support your child’s developing eating habits: • Let mealtimes be social and fun family time rather than a stressful battle. As a child/adult, we link tastes and experiences together so making mealtimes happy will support a positive association. • Invite your child’s friends over for mealtimes. Seeing friends eating different foods with which they may be unsure about can give them reassurance. • Give time to explore food. We all eat at a different pace so it’s important to let a child explore. It can help give confidence. • Having variety, colour or different layouts (i.e. a face or car) can create a fun experience. • Try new foods together. When my boys & I try new foods, I always like to say with a happy face, “Try this, it is really yummy!” • Encourage them to try just a mouse bite size. This amount isn’t usually too daunting. • Try a new food beside a familiar food. • Try to have mealtimes before the child gets very hungry or tired.
Hope these tips are helpful. If you would like to discuss them or for more information about Children’s & Baby Weaning Cookery Workshops, e-mail me at lizzie@littlekitchenmagicians.com
• Cooking together can have a wonderful influence (as seen at our workshops). The child is so proud of their achievement & happy that they usually want to try it even with foods they wouldn’t normally eat.

An award winning song and dance academy has opened its first branch in Cornwall. And it’s all thanks to 30-yearold dancer, Candice Inglis, who opened her own babyballet business in September this year. Babyballet is the UK’s leading pre-school song and dance academy with over 10,000 youngsters attending more than 1,000 classes every week. These days it is a recognised children’s brand. Alongside classes it has an online gift shop selling branded goods, and lovable characters Twinkle and Teddy 12
and Flutterby The Fairy who take part in numerous children’s festival across the country. Babyballet Truro is offering a three week class trial in Truro for £15, with more classes in local areas coming soon.

Benefits of Reading and Sharing Books with under 5’s Give a book to a young child and see what they do. Some will look at the front cover, some will open the book and turn the pages and others will turn over to the back cover. Whatever they do they are experiencing books. Put that experience together with a parent who is talking to them, asking them what they think is happening in the pictures and listening to their child’s response and you are offering your child a stimulating activity where you can share an experience together! Children are never too young to handle books, and sharing books with their parents is quality time spent with your child. Below are a few tips to ensure that sharing books is a positive experience!
•
Picture books for under 5’s are a great topic of conversation; it’s amazing how imaginative your child will be. It also promotes great language! Give them plenty of time to look at the pictures, talk to them about what is happening. You can make up a new story; ask the children what they think might happen next. Occasionally the children will associate what is happening in the pictures with real life, which gives them further opportunity to talk.
•
It’s great to share favourite books over and over again. The repetition helps the child understand and remember the language that they hear. It’s not unusual for them to want to hear the same book again and again!
•
Read simple stories and use your fingers to point to the words. This allows them to join in. They will build in confidence when they are able to sound out the letters at the beginning of words and will want to read more!
•
Don’t read for too long; try to make it a regular session at bed time.
•
Remember you are not teaching your child to read. You are sharing an experience together which is a wonderful way to help your child’s language development.
Remember reading with your child on a regular basis gives them the best start to life! Jude Gardner B’Ed, Reception Class Teacher, St Hilary School

I’m Jo Long, a fully qualified and insured fitness instructor specialising in children’s fitness. Getting kids active while having loads of fun is my passion and I run play sessions, dance fitness classes (Zumba & Bokwa for children) & soft play kids parties in West Cornwall. I regularly work with schools, nurseries & play groups throughout the area to help them inspire their children to have fun and keep fit.
Did you know that children under 5 need to be physically active for at least 3 hours a day to keep them healthy? I’m really passionate about promoting fitness as being fun for children. I noticed the lack of dance activities for children under 5's and created ‘Jumping Joey’s Fun and Play’ session - a very successful class in St Just. This was so popular I ran a survey to find out what parents wanted for under 5's and as well as dance they wanted soft play, so I’m very proud to be able to offer West Cornwall's first mobile soft play hire service. It's so much fun! We've got a fabulous farmyard bouncy castle, loads of soft play to climb, jump & slide over, a small ball pool and the fantastic Pony Cycles! New classes will be popping up around West Cornwall in the coming months & I am available for parties & events, so visit the website or follow me on facebook to keep up to date and find out more.

Information Sheet 4
First Aid Facts
Cuts and Grazes Minor Cuts and Grazes happen to most children at some stage, especially when they start to toddle about. Cornwall Resus are on hand to offer some expert advice on what to do if your child sustains a minor or more serious injury. •
•
•
•
•
Elevate the limb where the injury has occurred.
•
If the bleeding has stopped and a cut or graze appears dirty. Clean gently with cool boiled water or sterile water.
•
If the injury bleeds through the initial dressing – without removing the first apply a second dressing over the wound.
Wipe away from the wound and use a clean swab or dressing each time. Pat dry and apply a sterile wound dressing or plaster.
•
If the injury bleeds through the second dressing- remove both dressings and check you are applying pressure in the right area. Then apply a clean new dressing.
If there is an embedded object in the wound like glass or wood, do not attempt to remove it. Apply pressure to either side of the object and seek urgent medical attention.
•
If a wound becomes red, swollen, smelly or has any discharge from it- it may be infected. Seek medical attention for your child.
Apply pressure to the bleeding area with a sterile or clean dressing- it is tempting to grab anything in an emergency but it is important not to introduce bugs to a wound so having a well-stocked first aid kit to hand is very useful when you have small children.
If the injury bleeds through this dressing – seek urgent medical attention. Maintain pressure on the bleeding either by holding the dressing in place or by securing a bandage that is firm enough to maintain pressure but not so tight that it impairs circulation.
Cornwall Resus are experts in Baby & Child First Aid and Life Saving training.
