Editor’s Note

T

To revive hope for millions

he outbreak of COVID-19 had hit countries around the globe at different times and in various degrees but the response to curb the disease forced national lockdowns to travel restrictions and shutdown of borders that made tourism one of the hardest-hit sectors. The international tourist arrivals during 2020 declined between 58% and 78%, with 100 to 120 million direct tourism jobs at risk. In the new normal, the world’s tourism turns to domestic travel. As part of travel normalization, travelers preferred mostly destinations closer to their home with international travel still having restrictions as a consequence of the pandemic. Countries with higher domestic tourism shares have the chance for faster recovery going forward and all countries are in the mode of promoting domestic tourism. India, China, and the United States of America are the world’s largest domestic tourism markets in terms of tourist trips. According to the statistics in most large destinations, domestic tourism expenditure is indicated to be higher than inbound spending. Tourism expenditure makes a significant contribution to the economy and is, therefore, a key component to tourism. Globally, Domestic tourism is six times bigger than international tourism (1.4 billion international arrivals in 2018) usually measured in the number of tourist trips. The initiatives implemented in this recovery period to promote domestic travel and restore confidence will play a key role in the future of the Tourism sector. Building trust and confidence among travelers, workers, and host communities is the first step through im-

plementing health, hygiene, and safety protocols. As a service trade, tourism can have multi-faceted effects that transcend and impact other sectors throughout the socio-economic spectrum which may further impact recovery plans and its capacity to create jobs and transform societies. Making a fertile environment for entrepreneurship, maximizing efficient technologies, diversifying markets and products are some measures for a sustainable recovery of the sector. In the current scenario, the importance of public-private partnerships should also be reinforced. Many countries have already started marketing and promotion campaigns that encourage the citizens to travel to nearby destinations within the country for weekend trips to revive the regional tourism industry. This encourages domestic demand and helps recover confidence in the sector. Tourism authorities are focusing on promoting rural, natural, less-known destinations while making sure to not neglect popular destinations entirely. 7 Fiscal and monetary measures have been implemented by many governments to ease the financial burden of entrepreneurs. Re-opening policies and recovery plans should be effective and should prefer people first, while also making sure to be in accordance with the latest science and epidemiological safety practices with partnerships and coordination for a safe restart which can hopefully accelerate recovery to revive hope for millions of people around the world. The event provided a unique, high-level platform to allow Members to share their best practices and proposals for recovery. With the theme “Recovering Tourism. Rebuilding Trust. Reinforcing Partnerships,” the Session echoed the wider priorities of UNWTO, above all restoring confidence in international travel and promoting collaboration at every level. Participants were encouraged to make use of the new Affiliate Members Virtual Corner, launched to coincide with the Plenary Session. The Plenary Session focused on laying the foundations for UNWTO’s Programme of Work for 2021. UNWTO’s Affiliate Members, who include businesses, academia, and civil society actors, will play an important role in the United Nations specialized agency’s work in the challenging months ahead. UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said: “The engaged participation of every part of our sector will be needed to restart tourism and drive recovery. From the start of this crisis, tourism has led the way in adapting to the new reality and putting public health concerns first. Now, tourism needs the support of governments and international organizations to grow back and grow back stronger and more resilient, benefitting many millions of people and businesses worldwide.” Making good on UNWTO’s pledge to lead by example, this hywww.tourismindia.org

174M T&T JOBS COULD BE LOST DUE TO COVID-19 AND TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS WTTC Research reveals small yet positive job gains, driven by the return of domestic travel in a number of markets; Already in present circumstances, 143m jobs will be impacted

T

he impact of current restrictions on international travel which continue through to the end of 2020 will be devastating, with as many as 174m million jobs lost globally. The new

12

NOVEMBER 2020 TOURISM INDIA

figures from the WTTC revealed that 174m Travel & Tourism jobs could be lost in 2020 if barriers to global travel remain in place. WTTC’s latest economic data figures look at the punishing im-

pact of COVID-19, as well as local and global travel restrictions on the Travel & Tourism sector. Down from the 197m jobs as detailed in the previous study in June, WTTC says this positive gain

is in most part driven by the return of domestic travel in countries such as China, which has shown a particularly strong recovery of its domestic market. It has also implemented a comprehensive testing and contact tracing programme, alongside health and hygiene protocols, further contributing to this significant increase. The analysis shows that a staggering 31m jobs could be saved by the end of 2020 if the current global travel restrictions are removed sooner. Prolonged travel restrictions could also eliminate $4.7 trillion in the sector’s contribution to global GDP, equating to a loss of 53% compared to 2019. Ms. Gloria Guevara, WTTC President & CEO, said: “Our latest data reveals the gravity of the long-term negative impact facing the global Travel & Tourism sector if we don’t work together to resume international travel immediately. “As travel restrictions around

Worst forecast can be avoided if an immediate coordinated response is implemented the world remained in place over the summer months, our estimates report an increase from 121m to 143m jobs lost. In the space of just four months, our study has shown further 22m jobs under threat worldwide. This is devastating news, and we need international coordinated action now.” “The sector’s recovery will be delayed even further, with more jobs lost, unless quarantines are replaced with rapid, costeffective testing at airports on departure, and air corridors. The

longer we wait, the more the ailing Travel & Tourism sector faces total collapse.” Just a few weeks ago, G20 Tourism Ministers hosted more than 45 CEOs and Members of WTTC who, at the request of Saudi Arabia, presented the 100 Million Jobs Recovery Plan to save the already crippled Travel & Tourism sector, and 100m jobs globally. The game-changing plan was created with input from WTTC Members and covered a range of key initiatives that hinged on securing strong international coordination to re-establish effective operations and restart international travel. Among other measures, this included eliminating quarantines and other travel barriers. Through the implementation of an international testing regime, combined with rigorous health and safety protocols, to enable the world to adapt to living with the COVID-19 virus while minimizing the risk of it spreading further.

THE HOSPITALITY CHALLENGE: SUPPORTING THE HOSPITALITY TALENTS OF TOMORROW I

It shows how innovators from around the world can keep tourism, hospitality and travel at the very forefront of sustainable development and positive change for all

n June 2020, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and Sommet Education launched the Hospitality Challenge. This was designed to identify ideas and individuals capable of accelerating the recovery of the tourism sector in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The initiative has received almost 600 applications from all around the world. The 30 top finalists will be granted a full-board scholarship for Bachelor or Master’s degree-level courses at 30 different hospitality programs. All of them are hosted by Sommet’s internationally renowned institutions specialized in Hospitality and Culinary Arts: Glion Institute of Higher Education, Les Roches, and École Ducasse. The scholarships are dedicated to accelerating the personal development of talented individuals who will build the Hospitality of Tomorrow. Bringing the submitted projects to life and increasing their chances of impacting the tourism sector has been the driving force of this challenge. The three most entrepreneurwww.tourismindia.org

ial projects among the 30 winners will receive seed money from Eurazeo, the leading global investment group to which Sommet Education belongs. Out of the 600 applications, 39% were submitted from the Americas, followed by Europe (28%), Africa and the Middle East (both 18%), and Asia and the Pacific (15%). Putting People and Planet First The Hospitality Challenge focused on four categories. The Hotels and Hotel-Related Operations category was the most popular, receiving 41% 19 of all applications, followed by the Luxury Travels, Goods and Services category (34%), then the Food and Beverage category (17%), and finally the Smart Real Estate category (8%). The breakdown of the different categories demonstrates a strong interest in improving the operational side of hotels through its social impact, with many projects aiming to reduce unemployment and the better management of hotel staff. Among the four categories, four eminent trends have emerged:

waste reduction and sustainability, jobs and education, safety and travel experience, as well as revenue and productivity. Almost 50% of the projects address Sustainable Development Goal 8 - Decent Work and Economic Growth. Many projects also offer new perspectives on the COVID-19 response. A large number of the high-quality projects promoting inclusivity and sustainability to reinvent the Hospitality of Tomorrow, also provides fresh ideasfor the tourism sector. These will allow tourism to keep on contributing to overall socio-economic recovery.

GLOBAL STEERING COMMITTEE TO REVIVE INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL WTTC is continuing to lead the response to the devastating challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic to the struggling Travel & Tourism sector.

T

o provide a route to recovery for the Travel & Tourism sector by reviving international travel through the public-private partnership, WTTC takes on global leadership and coordination role. G20 Tourism Ministers have hosted more than 45 CEOs and Members of WTTC, who at the request of Saudi Arabia, presented their Jobs Recovery Plan to save the besieged Travel & Tourism sector and 100m jobs globally. The WTTC Jobs Recovery Plan could save 65 million jobs across all G20 countries, including Spain. Regionally, Asia Pacific could save the most, with 45.8 million jobs, followed by the Americas with 20.2 million and Europe with 19.9 million. In India alone, 16 million Travel & Tourism jobs could be saved under the WTTC plan. During the historic G20 Tourism Ministers session, WTTC and its Members presented their plan to 22

save the embattled Travel & Tourism sector and explored key initiatives to deliver the prompt recovery of the sector and save millions of lost jobs. WTTC is continuing to lead the response to the devastating challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic to the struggling Travel & Tourism sector. Now it intends to establish a structure to deliver on these goals, led by a global Steering Committee, comprised of 12 WTTC Member CEOs and other business and institutional leaders to establish an international consensus to take action. The priorities and recommendations made by the Steering Committee will be passed onto functional working groups for action and delivery. These specialized working groups will address how to open up travel by creating crucial ‘air corridors’ and a globally

recognised standard for an airport test and trace regime, amongst others. In addition, a Government Affairs Working Group will liaise with individual governments to ensure they have all the relevant data and information needed to support our efforts. Ms. Gloria Guevara, WTTC President & CEO, said: “WTTC is uniquely positioned to provide a platform at the highest level where the private and public sector can work together to help revive international business and leisure travel and save 100 million jobs globally and 16 million in India alone. “What came out of the historic G20 meeting with international business leaders was a clear consensus that only cooperation at the highest level and engagement with the public and private sector will achieve action. It is vital that ‘air corridors’ be restored between the world’s leading

financial hubs, such as the hugely important transatlantic route between London and New York. “Restoring these routes for international business travellers must be coupled with the agreement and adoption of globally recognised standards for a rapid, cost effective airport test and trace regime. “Together these will help create a safe and hygienic environment to travel and aid the beleaguered Travel & Tourism sector which continues its fight for survival. “This in turn will act as an engine to help kickstart the economic global recovery to benefit the whole Travel & Tourism sector and millions of jobs throughout the supply chain which are dependent upon international travel. “The economic fallout from COVID-19 continues to relentlessly burn its way through the Travel & Tourism sector. However, our plan could save 100 million jobs through strong international cooperation, removing travel barriers and introducing an international testing protocol at airports to minimise the spread of COVID-19. “While I am encouraged by the unity and strength of purpose shown by the private and public sector at the recent G20 Tourism Ministers Meeting, there is so much at stake that we must redouble our collective efforts to save the sector together.” WTTC will continue working with major industry bodies and global organisations, such as International Air Transport Association (IATA, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Airport Council International (ACI), World Economic Forum (WEF), International Chamber of Comm Intro: Up to 100 million jobs globally and 16 million in India could be saved.erce (ICC), to further take forward the positive steps which have already been achieved.

THE ALMONDHUED HILLOCKS

A

yers Rock in Central Australia is a massive natural formation of red-sandstone enlisted by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The region contains an abundance of natural springs, streams, marshes, caves with

vegetable-dyed cave paintings and rock carvings. To experience a spectacular view of this massive hillock glow into red at the times of maturing sun and during the Sunset, tourists who visit the nearby Kata-Tutja National Park

flock here in multitudes. Likewise, the reddish cliffs in Badami, a historical town in north Karnataka, are also illuminated by the twilight dawns and dusks. While the Ayers Rock is named after an Australian Bureaucrat,

Badami derived its name from the Hindi word of Almond; “badam” - denoting the colour of the pale-red-sandstone ridges, which is a landmark of the town. From historians’ point of view, the word Badami is a derivative of Vatapi. Vatapipura, the capital center was flourished during the period of the Chalukya Dynasty who ruled from 5th to 8th AD. Winding roads from all directions through, vast agricultural lands of sunflower, mustard seeds, mice, millets then through Badami Town leads to the abode of Badami Hills. Out of the four cave temples engraved in Badami cliffs, the fourth cave is attributed to the Jain cult. The first one is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the second and third cave temples are devoted to Lord Vishnu. The rock-cut cave temples on the lap of the hillock and other structural temples that survived

in the surroundings show the efflorescence of art, culture, and the mastered engineering skills during that period in Badami. According to the mythological allusions Lord Siva has 32 hands. One can find a distinctive manifestation of a dancing Siva figure on the entrance of the First cave, which is dedicated to Siva on its right sidewall. The 18-handed Dancing Siva, 9 on the left and 9 on the right, is unique and rarest of the rarest one among the Nataraja figures. These 18 hands formulate 81 dancing postures mentioned in Natyasastra of Sage Bharata. From the main hall, one can see the sanctum sanctorum where a Shivalinga is seen. The ceiling of the cave has a skilfully carved five-headed coiled serpent, the divine Adishesha. The presence of the Ardha-nareeshwara figure and the importance given to it symbolizes the equal

status enjoyed by the women. The ornamental decorations on the pillars make anyone bow to its expounded artistic excellence. Harihara and Dwara-palakas (door guards) are commonly seen in many Siva temples, but Siva and his consort Parvati on riding pose sit on the Nandi bull is a rare sort of figure. Siva-sub-cave on the right side has “Vatapi-Ganesh” carved on the wall having distinctive features with total contrast to a normal Ganesh figure. Unlike other appealing Ganesha Idols “Vatapi-Ganesh” figure has no crown instead the long hair tied together like that of a Sage. Only two hands are seen here whereas a normal Ganesh has four hands. Another exceptional feature here is the flat-stomach of the idol without a snake-belt, instead of a big belly, which is a common feature of a normal Ga-

As the Cave Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, it houses various figures connected with Vishnu’s myths and incarnations, of which the Fish, first incarnation of Vishnu- on the ceiling and Four Swastikas carved in a single line are impressive. The third Cave is considered to be the oldest and the largest among the four Cave Temples of the Hillock and believed

to be constructed by a powerful Chalukya King, Mangalesha in AD 578 which is also dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The inscriptions carved here are in Sanskrit in the old form of Kannada alphabets. Lord Vishnu’s gorgeous sitting figure on a five-headed mythological serpent Ananta is stunningly carved on the sidewall of the long pillared-hall. Paintings by vegetable dye on the ceilings have surpassed the time to glow the eyes of the modern visitors. Apart from that, a host of various carvings of Kubera, Indra the monsoon god sitting on his white-elephant-Airavat and of Varuna, the god of the Sea sure is a sight to behold. The fourth Cave chiselled on the crest of the hill much later by the end of 7th AD has the specialty of a rock-cut Jain Basati (temple of Jainism). Most of the figures in this Cave are on the engraved (inner carvings) forms- while all the earlier Cave Temples in Badami possess embossed (projected carvings) style of sculptures. A large Idol of

Lord Mahavira in meditation posture (dhyana-mudra) is carved in the sanctum sanctorum. On both sides of Mahavira, there are figures of Parshwanata and Bahubali on the right and left respectively. Some incomplete idols are also seen here that enrich the artistic elegance of the Forth Cave. A fortification built by Tipu Sultan in the 18th Century stand atop the Badami Cliff ridges supervises the whole region with its brooding eyes even today. An aerial view from the Hillock of Agasthya Theertha, a large sacred pond on the ground with surrounding edifices, the bustling Badami town, a vast spread of greenery - comprises of agriculture and marshes- is sure enough for any backpacker to mark their calendars to the almond hued hillock.

Whether its to quench one’s spiritual quest or it is about the rejuvenation of mind and body, Kodaikanal is amongst the most sought after hill station in its own right, that competes for the tourist’s affection. It is not known who about who invented this name but Kodaikanal comes from two Tamil words, ‘Kodai’ and Kanal’ which literally mean ‘relief from heat’ and the place never seem to disappoint. It is actually a summer forest. It is also referred to as ‘the gift of the forests’ and ‘princess of hill stations’. Built in the year 1845 at

an altitude of 2130 metres above sea level, with the purpose of getting respite from the scorching South Indian heat and the thus breeding tropical diseases, it is an apt place to be to take refuge from the high temperatures of cities at lower elevation. It has a monsoon influenced subtropical highland climate, because of which the city experiences a cool weather through out the year. The earliest known residents of the hill town were the Palaiyar tribal people. The said modern Kodaikanal was established by American Christian missionaries and British Bureaucrats. The result is a large number of churches in the city. Apart from various Hindu temples, there is also an active community

of Tibetan Buddhist refugees. Later, the elite Indians chose the place to settle down. The town is set on a plateau above the southern end of Palani Hills. The hill town covers an area of 21.45- sq-km and is renowned for its educational institutions of international repute. Kodaikanal is known for its rich flora. Of the big trees, cypress, eucalyptus and acacia are the dominant varieties. The hillplantain fruits and plums are known for their freshness and taste. cessful digital initiatives, such as SAF x You, the How to…Series, and the Memory Capsule Project. Given stringent advisories on travel and public gatherings by governments across the world, from the early quarter of 2020, the physical edition of the Serendipity Arts Festival stands postponed. However, continuing with the series of digital offerings from Serendipity Arts Foundation, SA Virtual will respond to the internet and its big role in connecting people from across the world and consolidating its offerings, which binds us together. The SA Virtual will turn to the internet as a site in order to forge meaningful artistic collaborations that are hinged on the innovative integration of the arts and the digital space, aiming to foster an increasingly open and accessible arts community. The virtual programme from the 4th December – 21st of December, seeks to conceptualize and adapt artistic visions and projects for spaces that can be created and

accessed digitally; not merely using the internet as an alternative medium, but as a dimension with its own unique properties that can encourage new thinking and create new possibilities for how art is created and how it is experienced, for years to come. SA Virtual will feature curated projects, performances, workshops, talks, engagement-based initiatives, and discourse around the arts. Some of the curators whose projects will feature as part of SA Virtual are Amitesh Grover, Anmol Vellani, Anuja Ghosalkar & Kai Tuchmann, Kristine Michael & Chandrika Grover Ralleigh, Lina Vincent & artistic collaborator Akshay Mahajan, Mandeep Raikhy, Veeranganakumari Solanki, Siddhant Shah, and more. All of the featured curators have approached the mandate of curating for an internet-based audience by transcending the traditional silos between artistic disciplines. The emphasis is on collaboration and on increasing creative inclusivity by www.tourismindia.org

thinking beyond the conventional definitions of who is an artist. Explaining the idea behind SA Virtual, Mr. Sunil Kant Munjal, Founder Patron Serendipity Arts Foundation, said, “Historically, the arts have survived perilous times and emerged stronger because of an innate ability to adapt, acclimatize and evolve. Over the last few months, the internet surge has catalyzed this evolution. Through SA Virtual, we have tried to draw attention to the limitless possibilities that arts as a practice and the internet as a medium can offer each other”. One of the highlights of the performances will be My story | Your story | Our story, curated by Anmol Vellani. This project will49have two performances—in live and recorded medium respectively, and an unfinished story. Another, The Last Poet, is being curated by Amitesh Grover, as a multilayered art form with theatre, film, sound art, creative coding, digital scenography, and live performance—to be navigated by visitors as rooms and doors leading to experiences. Meanwhile, Mandeep Raikhy’s The Body-in-Movement

is imagined as an interconnected web of thinking, seeing, making, and writing. This curatorial proposition is conceived of as a laboratory that enables a group of artists from across disciplines to think through what it means to move/ create/perform in these times, what the digital space has to offer to the emergent discourse of the body and the ways in which presence/ absence of the body is constructed and experienced within the digital web. Additionally, the programme features Vertigo Dance Company’s performance One, One & One, choreographed by Noa Wertheim, and a dance workshop, supported by the Embassy of Israel in India. A performance of Introducing... Antigone, Interrupted by Scottish Dance Theatre will be presented during the virtual programme, with support from British Council India. SA Virtual will also proactively engage with people from a range of demographics guided by a strong policy of diversity and inclusion and offering a selection of free workshops and conversations. Highlights include craft artisan workshops including Phad, Madhubani, and Gond paintings, guided drawings, inclusive art workshops for children, DIY sensory engagement activities, Kite making, Scroll painting, Sanjhi paper cutting, recipes from Goan restaurants, and much more. Viewers will also get to attend Zoom talks and active engagements around the commissioned SA Virtual project. These talks or engagements will be with the artists and curators who are working on the project. Conversations also include roundtables on the iconic yesteryears arts and literary journal, The Modern Review, that shaped India’s political and cultural discourse as part of an upcoming research project called Text / Matters and exploring the print publics of the past and present.

TRAVELING TO MALDIVES DURING COVID-19 MALDIVES REOPENED ITS BORDERS TO TOURISTS OF ALL NATIONALITIES AND WELCOMED THEM BACK TO THE SUNNY SIDE OF LIFE

T

he Maldives is a picture-perfect archipelago, situated in the middle of the Indian Ocean, and home to tiny coral islands that provide for natural isolation. The island nation is famous for its beauty and is celebrated as one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. Due to the ongoing global pandemic, COVID-19, tourism had

to come to a standstill and the country had to close its borders as part of the stringent public health measures taken to curb the outbreak. After almost four months of closure, on 15th July, Maldives reopened its borders to tourists of all nationalities and welcomed them back to the sunny side of life. As the world recovers from the

current situation, the government made the decision, fully confident in the safety measures and preparations to ensure the protection of tourists and people working in all tourist establishments. The resumption of the tourism industry was only given the go-ahead following extensive protocols, after important consultations with health professionals and relevant

stakeholders. During the first phase, only resorts and liveaboards in uninhabited islands resumed operations. The signature “one-island-oneresort” concept also ensures that visitors to the country are based in their respective resorts. Together, these unique arrangements make it easier for visitors to maintain social distancing, whilst enjoying a truly safe and secluded holiday. On 15th October, guesthouses in inhabited islands resumed operations as well. Wearing masks is mandatory for tourists and locals at all times in these islands. The development of local tourism is further aided by the introduction of “Split-Stay.” At first, this was only permitted between resorts but as of 23rd October, the local Health Protection Agency (HPA) has permitted split stay between all tourist establishments, with prior approval as per the guidelines by the Ministry of Tourism (MoT). All tourist establishments have been regulated to ensure that they are in line with the COVID-19 tourism guidelines; a COVID-19 safe tourism guideline was issued by the Ministry of Tourism along with a certification program to uphold proper safety and hygiene standards. In conjunction with the reopening of borders, a marketing campaign called “Rediscover Maldives…the Sunny Side of Life” was launched by Visit Maldives, during a virtual campaign where top international media from 21 countries including the main source markets joined in. In September, the second segment of this campaign, “Rediscover Maldives Webinar Series”, also commenced in which 4 sessions targeted to different markets were conducted over a span of 2 weeks. During this webinar series, “A Dozen Must-do Experiences in Maldives” was also launched. The aim of this campaign was to take viewers on a spectacular journey www.tourismindia.org

with a dozen unique experiences; some of them only attainable in the Maldives. It also showcased the uniqueness of the destination and created excitement by giving a rare glimpse of the destination through videos on several online and social media platforms. As of 14th October, there are 3 COVID-19 hospital facilities in the greater Male’ region with 263 beds and an additional 5 COVID-19 hospital facilities across the country with 183 beds. Currently, there are over 11,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with a total of 37 deaths. These cases are saturated in the greater Male’ region. Further to this, there are 21 active cases in inhabited islands and in 23 resorts, including 22 tourists and 34 staff. However, the government, together with relevant stakeholders, are ensuring that the Maldives remains a safe haven for tourists to travel to and has enforced several measures to warrant this. Firstly, all tourists are required to fill an online Traveler Health Declaration form within 24 hours prior to their departure to the Maldives. At first, a negative COVID-19 test result was not required but in 51 September, the government made it mandatory for all tourists to present a negative COVID-19 test certificate within 72 hours prior to departure to the Maldives. On 14th October, the government extended the validity time to within 96 hours prior to departure to the Maldives, easing access for tourists embarking on long-distance and time-consuming flights. Additionally, all tourists are required to wear masks and will undergo

thermal screening on arrival. The Maldives has been gaining recognition in the efforts to make it a safe destination for travelers. The country received the “Safe Travels Stamp” by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), in recognition of the efforts to implement enhanced health and safety measures, in line with the WTTC global Safe Travels protocols. Additionally, Velana International Airport received the ACI Airport Health Accreditation for consistent measures, which are in line with ACI’s standards in the “new normal” during the pandemic. Velana International Airport is the second airport in the Asia Pacific Region to receive Health Accreditation. The Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with Allied Insurance, has also introduced the first COVID-19 Travel Insurance in the Maldives. This policy covers charges for services including isolation costs, medical treatment, and transportation costs to isolation/medical facilities and consists of two plans; “Allied Inbound” and “Allied Inbound Plus.” The package covers 7 or more days and can be purchased before arriving in the Maldives through the Allied Insurance website. More information can also be acquired through the toll-free hotline 1600. There are indications of tourism recovery as the tourism sector continues to gather momentum in getting back to its normal level of operations. This is evident with increased flight movements and tourist arrivals, as they gradually increase. NOVEMBER 2020 TOURISM INDIA

NEW ZEALAND’S

QUIRKIEST ANIMALS

Some of New Zealand’s greatest celebrities aren’t human. If you’re looking for a thumbless autograph, these are the hottest animals you can find around the country

S

ome of New Zealand’s greatest celebrities aren’t human. If you’re looking for a thumbless autograph, these are the hottest animals you can find around the country. It is no secret that New Zealand is home to the most diverse wildlife who have thrived in their natural habitats for many years. Here is a list of some of the most

54

iconic and unique creatures, no less than celebrities themselves! Young Ken the kea – the famously cheeky indigenous mountain parrot – has been making a name for himself in the South Island town of Nelson since June, when he interrupted a horse-riding lesson. At the time, the Department of Conservation (DoC) asked residents not to feed or

play with him, worried Ken would be spoiled and unable to survive in the wild. But Ken didn’t want to live in the wild. He is more at home with the picket fences and petunias of suburbia. He’s been spotted taunting pets, shooing humans off their own decks, and just generally “throwing things around and just having a good old play”.

There have been 12 sightings over the past month up and down the coast including in the middle of Nelson city itself. He’s recently been seen gazing longingly through windows at the people inside. Mittens is a large Turkish Angora cat that reigns over central Wellington with a furry fist. Mittens have received the key to the city, been a calendar model, and was once in the running for New Zealander of the year; all this despite having no real achievements and a criminal record. His daily promenades are broken up by naps in offices and libraries, and by the call of the car. Mittens cannot resist the sweet sound of a car door opening and will come running for a kip in a motor vehicle. He is not always stopped by doors and has been known to jump through open car windows at stoplights. A map of Mitten sightings marks his territory as from the outer suburbs across through the central city. The vagabond feline has become an official resident of the city, and it’s better to let him do his thing. He knows what he is doing. A family of gigantic goats have become local celebrities in Auckland. Steve and Dave Jr (DJ), are comparable in size to small cows. Steve is three years old, around two metres tall, and 106kg. Steve and DJ love a ride in the car and have been sighted around the city. The frequent farmers markets, searching for a bargain, and are often found at one of the city’s beaches laid out flat for a kip in the sun. “Steve is definitely aware that he is a celebrity,” said owner Grant Solley. “He can pose for the camera.” DJ is only a year old, but he is not the baby of the family; that’s little Chips, three months old and already the cover girl of the local community Facebook page. She is named for the pile of woodwww.tourismindia.org

chips and afterbirth they found her buried under. Wee baby Burt Chop didn’t have a mum, and the other sheep got a bit rough with the young lamb. When he was moved into the human house for a bit of hand-rearing, Burt found where he belonged: with the dogs. His owner, Naomi Abraham, describes him as “the most useless sheep on the farm”; but he is the most talented animal on this list. This Romney sheep can jump, swim, and run like the wolves he thinks he descends from. If you are driving past farms on the Banks Peninsula, keep an eye out for a sheep/dog wearing sunglasses – that’ll be the one and only Burt. This $80,000 bird flies in a private plane, has his own island, and has done nothing to earn this sycophantic treatment. His greatest claim to fame is making love to the unwilling head of a zoologist in the middle of a Stephen Fry documentary. Though his will is strong, his skills are not; Sirocco has failed to produce any offspring in his 23 years. The Department of Conservation (DoC) reckons he is worth the insurance money though; he is a marketing asset. Sirocco has

around 235,000 Facebook fans, making him almost four times as popular as the leader of the opposition, Judith Collins. Sirocco loves a swim in the sea, a floret of broccoli, and staunchly refusing to be attracted to his own species. As a hand-reared parrot, he loves his human friends, and these days can be found hanging out at Orokonui Ecosanctuary in Dunedin. The Little Penguin rehabilitation facility in Napier is home to some very good penguins – and some very naughty ones. Some of the penguins were abandoned as chicks, some were injured or became sick in the wild, and all of them have found a home with each other. The National Aquarium of New Zealand keeps track of how they’re adapting to their surroundings and gives out monthly awards for good behavior. If the penguins’ sense of worth weren’t under enough pressure, there’s a Penguin of the Year competition that anyone in the world can vote on and this year, Captain, one of the nicest penguins and a real gentleman won the crown for Penguin of the Year 2020.
