michelin star dining with Steve Smith @ Bohemia

Jersey restaurant Bohemia is named in OpenTable’s Top 100 Best Restaurants in the uk… Bohemia Restaurant in Jersey has been named one of the top restaurants in the UK in the OpenTable Top 100 Best Restaurants 2014.

Bohemia is the only restaurant on the island to be ranked in OpenTable’s Top 100 Best Restaurants. The Michelin star restaurant stands alongside The Fat Duck, The Ledbury, Restaurant Story London, and Fera at Claridges. The results were determined by analysing over 340,000 reviews from more than 4,200 restaurants across the UK, all submitted by verified diners. Head Chef Steve Smith said: “The whole team is absolutely delighted. We have had a hugely successful year and it’s very rewarding that this award came from our diners.” Bohemia restaurant has had a fantastic year. In November Steve was named Head Chef of the Year at the Hotel Cateys

2014. Bohemia was also announced as one of the best restaurants in the UK in The Sunday Times Top 100 Food List 2014, as well as being awarded 4AA Rosettes, and receiving a top score in the Good Food Guide 2015. Steve was one of the youngest chefs in the country to achieve a Michelin star 10 years ago, at just 24 years old. He’s created a truly outstanding dining experience with his ingredient and flavour driven tasting menus. Bohemia Bar & Restaurant boasts a stellar reputation for its first rate cuisine, placing it firmly on the gastronomic map as a foodlover’s destination. Situated on the ground floor of The Club Hotel & Spa, Bohemia has been Jersey’s finest dining establishment since opening its doors in April 2004.

There seems to be a lot of buzz lately about seasonal produce, growing your own vegetables and the importance of shopping locally. While this may seem like a trend set by chefs, the impact it has on our everyday lives is not to be overlooked. First of all, the quality of fruit and vegetables that are in season is undeniable. you just can’t say that British strawberries in June taste the same as packaged ones coming from Egypt in the middle of winter. When you choose your fresh produce, you must check its origin; if it’s British you know it’s in season and fresh as it hasn’t travelled miles to get to you. Secondly, the price you pay for your shop will be considerably less if you shop seasonal, and you can help the planet at the same time by keeping down the amount of travelling around your fruit and veg has to do before coming home with you. There is an amazing selection of fresh food markets around, offering the best prices and quality, plus you are guaranteed fresh produce, while supporting your local community at the same time. Fareham holds a big farmers market every Monday 9am–3pm and an Independent Farmers’ Market 9am–2pm on the first Saturday of every month hosting up to 40 local growers and supporting Hampshire’s local farming and rural community. The blog The urbane Forager (theurbaneforager.blogspot.co. uk) gives local information on how to make the most of your area’s produce and shares activities you could do to get kids involved too! Local organisation Hampshire Fare also strives to raise awareness on the importance of consuming the best of Hampshire produce. Produce that is at its best in the next few months includes: lamb, asparagus, purple sprouting broccoli, savoy cabbage, leeks, radishes, and the one everyone is excited about, rhubarb! So get creative with all of these; all the green vegetables in season would be perfect as a hearty lamb broth or a warm salad, and of course, rhubarb crumble for pudding!

Decent knives are far more of a kitchen essential than a shelf full of celebrity cookbooks and without them you’ll struggle with even the basics. Depending on your budget, there’s a knife for you, from under £20 to well over £200. Here’s chef James Niven-Smith’s suggestions for staying sharp this year!

However much you spend, a knife is no good if it’s blunt. Sharpening can be a long laborious process but using a diamond or ceramic steel (you can find these from under £20 at www.nisbets.co.uk) cuts this down considerably. It’s hard to explain the technique which is based around angles and is best demonstrated but follow the basic instructions provided and you'll soon get the knack.

blunders

Many of us are guilty, albeit subconciously, of expressing our true feelings when in conversation or within a group without actually speaking. It’s rarely intended or spiteful, but our actions could at times be misinterpreded as deliberate or cause an offense. Read on for a few tips on what to avoid. Is that the time?

Touching your face

Glancing down at your watch, checking your phone, inspecting your fingernails or gazing around a room while talking with someone or while engaged in discussion can often mean ‘I’m bored’ and could be perceived as rude.

Commonly interpreted as a sign of deception, touching your nose, scratching your head or breaking eye contact. These actions are more often than not subconscious, but try to keep your hands away from your face and retain natural eye contact when you’re talking.

Stroking your chin Often a subconscious action we do while thinking or decision making, but be careful, it’s also been know to offend if done while staring at someone, sometimes interpreted as appearing ‘judgemental’.

Crossed arms Crossing your arms may simply be a comfortable position or a way to keep warm, but when in the company of others crossed arms can signal a sense of defence or a lack of interest.

Slouch potato Strong posture can be a sign of confidence and composure and can effect the way people behave around you. When greeting someone keep your shoulders back, your head up and have a stable grounding with your feet a comfortable distance apart.

Blinkety blink Rapid blinking could be interpreted as a sign of anxiety or raised nerves. Take deep breaths and try to relax if you find yourself doing this when meeting new people or when presented with a uncomfortable situation. 18

Winter/Spring 2015

Fidgeting Fiddling with your pen, toying with your coffee mug or playing with something in your hand are all additional signals to others that you’re nervous or unprepared.

Shifting weight Moving your weight from foot to foot indicates discomfort and can be interpreted as eagerness to leave the conversation. avoid shifting your feet any more than once every couple of minutes, unless you’re desperate for the loo, in which case simply excuse yourself.

Once considered a practice for Monks and Buddhists, today doctors are prescribing it alongside more conventional medications and it’s proving a hit among many celebrity folk. On the other hand, it’s still misunderstood by the masses who aren’t convinced by it’s healing effect. Town & City is here to highlight a few of the benefits. Hommmmm…

Stress relief Linked to the stress hormone cortisol, research has shown that meditation can reduce the bodies response to stress hormones, as well as help reduce anxiety. Reducing stress can have enormous effects including increased fertility, greater resistance to illness, as well as saving you money in medical costs and creating a more balanced happier lifestyle.

Blood pressure With increased levels of stress, blood pressure is raised. Removing or at least reducing stress can aid in the lowering of your blood pressure, keeping the doctor at bay.

Immune system Meditation has been shown to increase activity in areas of the brain that control the immune system, which can significantly boost your body's ability to fight illness. Research suggests people who meditate for around eight weeks following the flu jab had higher levels of antibodies fighting the virus compared to people that don't meditate.

Decreases pain Pain can be relieved with meditation and can have an effect on the genetics of our body. People who practice relaxation techniques can increase the number of pain fighting genes and in some cases it's been shown that meditation can provide a greater pain relief effect than morphine. PMS symptoms can be reduced by up to 60 percent.

How to meditate: Find a quiet place in your home and get comfortable, sitting with a straight back on a cushion or blanket. Focus on your breath or a mantra and your surroundings rather than thoughts of the past or future. now let your thoughts pass until you find yourself in relaxed state. There are many more advanced meditation techniques, so we'd recommend doing some further reading and with anything associated with the body, it wouldn't hurt checking in with your GP first.

breakdown…

The breakdown of a relationship is upsetting and difficult at any time, but the beginning of the year is always a busy time for family lawyers. Families in this situation will be going through a multitude of emotions; hurt, anger, grief, bitterness, frustration, fear and uncertainty with regard to the future. Members of the professional body ‘Resolution’, like Beverley Pym at Eric Robinson, commit to a constructive way of dealing with matters in a non-confrontational way for a better outcome, both financially and emotionally, for all concerned. The possibility of reconciliation is always explored, but if that is not a possibility, the first concern will be with regard to any children - shared care agreements and how often parents will spend time with them. The family finances will also be considered, as there will be a need for two homes rather than one. There may be issues involving pensions, shares and investments. as well as any debts such as loans, overdrafts and credit cards. 22

Winter/Spring 2015

Often, couples are directed to ‘Mediation’ which is a process conducted by an impartial Mediator, whose job it is to facilitate sensible and meaningful discussions between separating couples with a view to them finding their own solutions to matters arising from the breakdown of their relationship. another option would be a voluntary exchange of financial information and negotiations through Solicitors, with a view to reaching a settlement. There is also ‘Collaborative Law’, where a couple attends a roundtable meeting with their lawyers present, in the hope that a settlement can be negotiated. an alternative to starting the Court process to reach a financial settlement is ‘arbitration’. This is a private process but where the award is binding and can be converted into an enforceable Consent Order once it is approved by the Family Court. So there are a number of ways that you can settle matters out of Court. Mediation in particular, can often improve communication which is particularly important couples will be parenting children together in the future. Couples who can resolve matters amicably do tend to move on with their lives happily. BEVERLEy PyM IS a SEnIOR aSSOCIaTE anD FaMILy MEDIaTOR FROM THE FaMILy LaW TEaM aT ERIC ROBInSOn SOLICITORS. Town and City talks to Jessie and James about their journey from high-end fashion to parenthood and starting their own designer clothing brand for children.

Jessie said: “Working with Vivienne was absolutely fantastic, as she has a really unique and unusual way of cutting clothes and draping fabrics. We both learned so much there and it was an honour to get the experience from such a legend in the fashion industry.” needless to say that love blossomed, and soon after Jessie and James welcomed their son Billy into the world. From their fl at located in edgy Lordship Lane London and with the arrival of Billy, Jessie began to design clothes for him and the first ‘tip-toe trouser’

was handmade at home. next came their signature ‘T-squared’ t-shirt and then a jumpsuit. This then developed into a small collection for boys and girls and the Jessie and James brand was born. aW14/15 COILLECTIOn

after both gaining degrees in fashion, Jessie and James first met while working at the Vivienne Westwood Studios in Battersea, London. Originally from Germany, Jessie was taught by Vivienne at the Berlin university of arts and asked to work with her closely as creative head pattern-cutter on the ‘Gold Label’ collection. James, originally from Emsworth in Hampshire, was first spotted by Vivienne following a menswear show at the London Graduate Fashion Week. He turned down a place at the Royal College of art London to join her team, working on the Japanese ‘Man’ license in Tokyo and the ‘Man Collections’ in London and Milan.

James added: “Working in high-fashion teaches you how to cut and design clothes in an interesting and playful way, so everything that children’s clothes should be. When Billy arrived, we really started to see a gap in the market for a luxury clothing range for kids which was fun but still comfortable and wearable, so we started developing new silhouettes. Before we knew it we had a whole collection, a brand and a new business!” “We have two small children now, so the challenge of working and looking after two boys has always been massive, especially as the brand grows and we’re attending more exhibitions internationally. We’ve gratefully accepted the tireless support of our family and friends wherever possible, but we’ve had to juggle the business with having children right from the very beginning, so we seem to have found a balance now.”

Three years and six seasons later, Jessie and James collections are available in some of the most prestigious department stores in the world, including Liberty London and Harvey nichols in the uk, boutique outlets and international stores. Their collections incorporate very unique silhouettes which are the basis for their designs. Mixing historical shapes with modern pattern cutting principles that are ‘en vogue’ as well as being timeless through their originality, every item in the collection is considered in its detail and design. Jessie continued: “No one out there is creating children’s clothes like us, from a design perspective, but we want to make sure that we combine fashion with comfort, as that’s the most important thing for children. That’s why we only source the finest 100% cottons from the UK, Portugal and Italy and choose the best manufacturers and mills that understand our idea of quality and design.” The new Spring/Summer 2015 collection is no exception and features easy to wear dresses for the summer which children can wear all day every day, as well as dresses perfect for a summer party or special occasion. It offers cute separates to combine with each other and there are many ways to combine each style to create 26

different, personal and loveable looks. The clothes are wearable and versatile in comfortable jersey and woven mixes with a touch of extravagance. James commented: “The Spring/Summer 2015 collection takes us to an imaginary land where a girl can be a princess, ballerina, a film star or a dame. It offers ultra-light, delicate cotton fabrics in uniquely cut styles, with chic elements like contrast bow ties and practical ‘pin-up’ shorts. This collection showcases our love of detail in every garment and is the most loving so far.” The collection is also available online from two years right up to the 12-years age bracket, with the main focus continuing to be design, quality and comfort. Jessie and James also have big plans for enhancing their brand even further in 2015 by not only looking to open a new fl agship store in London, but by introducing a range of shoes, bags and accessories. As internet communication improves and travel costs increase it’s no wonder so many people are choosing to avoid the daily commute in favour of the home office. Whether you’re self employed, your company made cuts and sent you to work from home, or you choose to work from home – while a home office isn’t necessarily a “musthave”, the benefits of a dedicated working space can’t be denied. If you're setting up your home office for the first time or looking to re-organise a space, it's important for you and your family to respect this room. Hang a sign and close the door when working so everyone knows that you’re busy and not to be disturbed.

storage for files and documents. Give yourself ample space and keep up to date with latest upgrades – remember, it's your responsibility to keep your office running with supplies. There are enormous benefits to developing your own work space, but be careful not to create distractions.

When the time comes to switch off for the day, close the door to avoid temptation to pop in or use the room for recreation. This can blur the lines between work and play and disrupt the harmony you've been working to create.

The most important thing to remember is to remain professional. It's easy to sit in your pyjamas or relax your working hours, so respect your business and treat heading to your home office as if you were leaving the house. It's not uncommon for home workers to dress for the day in suits and ties – and this has been proven effective in getting your mind into the right place, although it's not for everyone.

Once you’ve established your office as a workonly space, gather everything you need. a desk to suit your requirements, a comfortable chair, computers, printers and stationery as well as 28

Thousands of tonnes of plastic pollution find their way into our oceans every year and have a detrimental impact on marine animals and ecosystems. Even more worrying is the potential harm that toxins carried by plastic is having on human health. Plastic pollution lasts hundreds of years and can now be found in every ocean around the world, no matter how remote. 40

It poisons our food chain and in the environment breaks down into small particles that attract toxic chemicals. These particles are ingested by wildlife on land and in the ocean, contaminating the food chain thus eventually affecting human health. These harmful chemicals leached by plastics have even been found in the bloodstream and tissues of humans. Consumption of disposable plastics – bags, bottles, straws and so forth – has spiralled out of control. These items are used for seconds, hours or days, but their remains last forever and recycling is not a sustainable solution to the crisis. Most of our plastic waste is sent to landfill, down-cycled, incinerated or exported to other countries, but recycling of plastic is costly and does not stem the production of new plastic products.

fishnets, it poses a threat to the animals that depend on the oceans for food. To a sea turtle, a floating plastic bag looks like a jellyfish. and plastic pellets – the small hard pieces of plastic from which plastic products are made – look like fish eggs to seabirds. Drifting nets entangle birds, fish and mammals making it difficult, if not impossible, to move or eat. as our consumption of plastic mounts, so too does the danger to marine life.

So what’s being done about it? Plastics manufacturers are investigating ways to create degradable plastics. although all materials eventually break down, a plastic soda ring can take up to 400 years to biodegrade, so researchers are working with two types of degradable plastics: photodegradable and biodegradable. Photodegradable plastics are made to become weak and brittle when exposed to sunlight for prolonged periods.

Across 48 shows in three months – and straight off the back of season 12 of Strictly – Brendan will showcase his expertise in an odyssey of music and dance, blending exquisite choreography with his own unique charisma in a bold, sensational show. There’s new music, new costumes and new banter to keep audiences entertained throughout, as Brendan leads his cast through a diverse selection of styles and numbers, each of them exhilarating, mesmerising and above all, memorable. Loaded with all the ballroom magic and Latin excitement that one could ask for, A Night To Remember certainly won’t be forgotten by anyone in attendance and is already poised to be one of 2015’s must-see shows. Ahead of his show at the Portsmouth Guildhall, we talk past, present and future…

As part of the original Strictly Come Dancing professional dancing cast, and seeing how the production has changed across the years, how has the most recent series been different from previous years?

Is becoming world Champion still something you would like to achieve?

Bigger production values, bigger and better pro numbers, more lights, more props and a whole new cast of celebs. Made for an exciting series.

TV, stage and entertainment is definitely where I’m supposed to be.

What effect has this overall experience had on the direction of your career? a pretty big one. I’ve been on Strictly for over 10 years and it’s what I’m most known for. It’s certainly given me opportunities that I wouldn’t have had before. I wouldn’t have been able to produce three touring theatre shows and had people come to see me like they do without it.

no and hasn’t been for a long time. I’m very proud of my past career and I was at the top of my game for many years but …

Your fiery character is great entertainment, but how do the public react to you in the real world?

Generally very nicely. People just love Strictly and are excited to meet you as you are a part of Participating in Dancing with their entertainment on a weekly the Stars on your home turf, basis. not everyone will like you New Zealand, can you describe but for the most part people how it felt sitting on the judging just want to say hello.

panel and did you ever wish you were dancing instead?

I loved the role as a judge. you never get voted off and you only work one day a week. I love that I’m a dancer on the show here, but it’s been fantastic to experience both sides.

Prior to your dancing career Dancer, producer, entertainer you worked as builder and roof and actor, where do you most layer, how and when did you feel at home and what would you realise you wanted to become like to do more of in the future? a professional dancer? I consider myself an Entertainer. I am all of the above and it all stems from dancing, but there’s more to my career than being able to pirouette.

during this time I made the decision that I would move to the uk to follow my dream of being one of the world’s best dancers. I still love renovating and working with my hands today.

I’ve always danced along with other interests I had growing up. I left school and went into building because I wanted to work, I loved doing it and it was

How do you feel about press gossip and how has your attitude towards the media changed over time? I’m very relaxed about it. I don’t like untruths but for the most part it’s here today, forgotten tomorrow. I’ve had so many things written both good and bad and you have to take the rough with the smooth. If you don’t like it, get out of the game as it’s probably not for you. When it affects my family though it upsets me greatly. I don’t ever want my daughter to be embarrassed about what’s been said about her daddy.

You’re currently touring ‘Brendan Cole – A Night To Remember’ what can we expect from your show? I like to think everything! My shows are best described as ‘An evening with’ style show. Full of live music from a phenomenal 14 piece band, dance from my superb 8 strong dance cast and with some chat thrown in for good measure. It’s a real variety type show with all you’d expect to see on Strictly but more intimate and geared for a live theatre audience. We have all of the dances you’d expect, argentine Tango, Salsa, some beautiful Waltzes, Charleston, quicksteps…we have them all. I host the show and perform throughout and I love the fact that it’s very intimate between me, my cast and the audience.

What are you expecting from the tour? What are looking forward to most? To me, the excitement of performing and having a reaction from a crowd is what I love most. I love looking out at the crowd just before the show starts and seeing people’s anticipation of what they are about to see and then again at the end to see their reaction. To see people smiling and discussing what they have just been a part of is immensely satisfying. I also look forward to hanging out with my cast. We have an incredible time together travelling around and performing.

“I love of your show begin? It’s a massive process. Myself, my looking out musical Director Barry Robinson and my wife Zoe started throwing music ideas at the crowd around whilst we were still in production on last year’s show. as the music choices just before begin to take shape, I start the plan of what the running order will be, and the logistics of the show getting on and off stage, costume changes etc. as all of this is going on I start to think starts” about my cast and who I would like to have with How and where does the concept

me as does Barry with our musicians. Over the space of about 10 months, the show takes shape. I try to do a bit of choreography during the summer pre-Strictly (this year with two of my leading dancers Patrick and Crystal) and the rest I choreograph during Strictly. It is a massive job and one that I am very hands on with.

What level of involvement do you have in the development and production of the show? I’m involved with most of it. Most shows are produced by a company and then someone like myself fronts it. not in this case. It’s very much my show from start to finish both creatively and probably 90% of decisions go through me. From casting to costume, music choices to booking the shoes, I do way too much myself, but it’s my show and it has to be right. This week I have been ordering props, shoes and costumes, sorting rehearsal space, casting my last dancer, have sent at least 200 emails regarding the show, media stuff for promo, choreographed a number, the list is endless and all while I’m still heavily involved in Strictly. I’m even chatting to you while in a cab between rehearsals and meetings. Who needs sleep?

“I shake my legs as fast as I can and get myself pumped up”

How do you feel when you’re dancing? Mostly excited. When you see and feel the audience reaction (and its a good one), you can’t help but love being on the stage. It’s a mixture of adrenaline, nerves, excitement and emotion all rolled into one and I love it.

Touring takes you away from home and family life, how do you cope with being away in order to concentrate on the job? It’s definitely hard but that’s part of the job and my wife Zoe is very supportive. Strictly is much harder being 6 and 7 days a week for over 4 months of the year. My tour only lasts two months and I make sure I schedule 2 days off to spend with the family and make sure all of the cast have time for their bodies to recover as it’s a full on show.

Where would you really love to perform? I’ve covered most types of venues. I’ve done arenas, theatres, in front of Royalty, on the TV, so don’t have any real wants but I’m sure there are many phenomenal venues that I don’t know about that I would love to play given the chance. The London Palladium is definitely one on the list and perhaps the Sydney Opera House.

What pre-stage rituals do you have? not too many, I generally try to get my adrenaline going, which isn’t hard when you have an excited audience ready to watch. I shake my legs as fast as I can and get myself pumped up, try to contain my excited grin and burst out!

Is there anything else you would like our readers to know? If they want to know the real me then my show will give them the opportunity. Lots of chat and being cheeky all night as well as one full on show.

breast aware

WRITTEn By Fiona stanton

self-exploration

Breast Cancer is a scary thing to think about, but it’s important for us to be aware of the signs and symptoms; with over 55,000 people diagnosed in the UK each year – that’s one person every 10 minutes. This aggressive disease is most common in women, but around 350 men are also diagnosed each year, yes men too. Catching the big C early gives you a better chance of beating it.

50

‘Breast aware’ is simply looking and feeling for anything that is unusual for you. If you do notice something that hasn’t been there before, get it checked out by your GP. Most lumps in the breasts aren’t cancerous and can easily be treated, but it’s always best to be safe. Here’s how to give those love lumps some TLC…

Touch your breasts; Look for changes; can you feel any unusual anything abnormal? texture or shape.

Check anything unusual and speak to your doctor.

Most people choose to lie down and use a flat hand to feel for any unusual lumps. Start from under the armpit across the breast to the cleavage, remembering to check up to the collarbone from the top of your stomach. use your left hand to check the right breast and your right hand to check your left.

as Breast Cancer is such a common condition in the uk, always see your GP if you are worried about anything you feel or see. Breast Cancer can kill, but catching it early can give you a better chance of beating it.

Winter/Spring 2015

Look at your breasts in the mirror with your arms up and then with your arms down – keep an eye out for any puckering, lumps, dimpling or bulging. If your breasts feel sore or swollen (and it’s not hormone related) then it’s worth getting checked out by your GP, pronto!

overcome public speaking anxiety

Are you faced with the prospect of giving a speech in front of an audience? Weddings, corporate pitches, or office presentations. It can be debilitating – cause increased perspiration, forgetfulness and anxiety. An estimated 75 percent of people fall victim, but fear not as Town & City is here with a few simple tips on how to overcome the nerves and provide a pitch perfect performance. Speak from the heart

Know your audience

Show appreciation

To appear professional and confident, ensure you know your subject and the material you’re presenting. Do your homework – read up, research, and rehearse. Having prompt cards or glance notes is a common aid, but you should know what you’re talking about inside out.

In order to relate to your audience you need to know who they are. Whether you’re talking to work professionals, potential clients, young people or friends and family, you may wish to adjust your approach.

Before getting started remember to offer thanks for your introduction and to the host. Be noble, take your time and try to appear calm.

Practice practice practice Take time to go over your speech in front of a mirror or in front of friends and family. Take note of your expressions and gestures and be aware of any nerves in order to work through them and give a polished presentation. 52

Winter/Spring 2015

Don’t be sorry Whatever happens, don’t apologise – not for the weather, for having a cough or for unreliable technology. avoid highlighting the negative in a situation. Take control of your speech and your audience, and plan for any potential unforeseen hiccups.

Direction Public speaking is an art, know where you’re going and avoid pointless fillers or improvising. Set the pace and invite your audience in. The body of your presentation should contain the message concluded with a summary. Round everything up with something remarkable – a story or anecdote – this will tie the two ends together. Good luck!

and head to uk showrooms in 2015

As the year gets into full flow and the host of new cars hit the roads, we’ve hand-picked a selection of our favourites coming in 2015. Whether you’re after a supermini, an SUV or a sizeable family saloon, we’ve rarely enjoyed a better range of new models from which to choose. vauXhall viva Available Summer after a 35-year hiatus, Vauxhall is reviving the Viva name in the hope of injecting some energy into its city car line-up. a replacement for the jurassic agila, the all-new Viva will borrow its three-cylinder petrol engines from the adam and Corsa ranges, allowing for sub-100g/km CO2 emissions and 70+ mpg fuel economy. We were at the uk media launch and were impressed with its drive and build. STaRTInG aT £7,900

volvo XC90 Available Spring arguably one of 2015’s most eagerly anticipated cars has to be the all-new xC90 premium SuV. nearly 12 years after the original went on sale, this – only the second-generation model - promises to be bigger, more luxurious, cheaper to run and even better to drive via a wide line-up of efficient petrol and diesel engines and transmissions. STaRTInG aT £45,550 Fiat 500X/500XC Available January The latest and final iteration of the iconic Fiat 500, the 500x compact SuV is available in front- and four-wheel drive derivatives and two body styles. The 500x appeals to younger urban drivers, while the 500x Cross with its off-road focus and chunky cladding targets those with a more active and adventurous lifestyle. The 500x is a cracking car to drive and excells in all respects. STaRTInG aT £14,595

suzuki vitara Available May The Suzuki Vitara - the car that pioneered the latter-day SuV in 1988 in Jx guise - is back. as the Grand Vitara was axed earlier last year, Suzuki bosses have confirmed the five-door Vitara will be powered by the same 118bhp 1.6-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel engines as deployed in the excellent Sx4 S-Cross. There’s no news on a new Grand Vitara yet, but we expect that to come in the next 24 months. STaRTInG aT an ESTIMaTED £13,500

mazda2 Available April The old Mazda2 and the Ford Fiesta shared one common denominator – they were huge fun to drive. But after seven years the Mazda is feeling long in the tooth while the Fiesta has excelled in all areas. It’s all change though with an all-new Mazda2, which looks great and features new 1.5-litre Skyactiv petrol and diesel engines. It also won the ‘Japanese car of the year’ award in november. STaRTInG aT £11,995

jaguar Xe Available May Without a compact executive car since the Mondeo-based x-Type was axed back in 2009, Jaguar will remedy that with the introduction of the all-new Jaguar xE – launched with excessive fanfare in London late last year and designed to take the fight to the audi a4 and Mercedes C-Class. a new range of Ingenium engines and a lightweight aluminium body will aid fuel efficiency and handling. STaRTInG aT £26,995

honda hr-v Available Spring after nearly a decade’s absence, Honda is set to revive the HR-V nameplate. Revealed at the Paris Motor Show, the stylish SuV shares its underpinnings with the excellent and spacious Jazz and is expected to use a number of that model’s economical engines. That means the range should include petrol and diesel engines and a hybrid set-up too. STaRTInG aT an ESTIMaTED £16,500

land rover disCovery sport Available April The Land Rover Discovery Sport is a more upmarket, standard 7-seater replacement for the ageing Land Rover Freelander. It’s mounted on a re-engineered version of the Freelander/

Range Rover Evoque chassis, rather than an all-new aluminium body. It won’t enjoy the Jaguar XE’s impressive range of new Ingenium engines at launch, but they will come later. STarTing aT £32,395

One to watch in 2015 ssangyong Labelled the ‘other korean car maker’ after kia and Hyundai, Ssangyong is poised to unleash a raft of new models to replace the current, but ageing line-up. First fruits from an expansive new-model investment programme will be the Tivoli, a compact SuV that has been three years in development and due in late summer. no prices, trim levels or technical details have yet been made available (expected in March), but you’ll be well advised to keep an eye on Ssangyong as they throw down a Dacia-like gauntlet here in the uk auto market.

Ford mondeo

Available March Three years overdue thanks to industrial disputes at the Eu assembly plant, the all-new and highly-anticipated Mondeo is finally here and brings the new Ford family face to the popular family saloon and estate models along with a new range of engines and advanced technologies. and for that smug smile as you pootle along, there’s a de rigueur hybrid in the mix, too.
