Stretch those soles Rather than jumping in the car to your local shop or work meeting, why not leave that bit earlier and take a stroll? It can be a great way to relax and clear your mind too.

Recruit a friend To help you squeeze in a work out and see your friends, try and combine both! You could start going for a morning powerwalk, giving you the chance to burn some calories, whilst having a catch up. Or if you have more time, why not help motivate each other at the gym.

Go back in time Head back to the 90’s era and instead of emailing or instant messaging your colleague walk over to their desk and speak to them. Use every opportunity you have to get up from your desk and up your step count.

Show your bathroom some TLC Give your bathroom a spring clean, not only will this tick off one of your chores but this is also a way to get yourself moving. Scrubbing the tub for half an hour can burn up to 200 calories, so not only can you make your bath sparkle but also your waistline will thank you for it too!

A huge thank you! Everyone loves our Wedding Rings and the sentiment behind them…

Set an alarm If you’re a bit of a desk jockey, set a reminder to make sure you have a brief walk around the office to get yourself moving.

Have more sex Struggling to find some couple time and keep up with a fitness regime? Why not combine the both, through lovemaking? Not only can this help to burn calories, but it can also help you have a great sleep! Sex or masturbation can help to relieve tension and help you go off to sleep faster. By getting a good night’s sleep it can then help you to be more productive the next day, which in turn can help you squeeze in exercise!

Make sure your shoes fit properly Sore feet after even a short walk? This is a common occurrence for those of us who do not have correct fi tting shoes, and this can put us off walking altogether. Be sure your foot has enough room in the toe box. There should be a thumbnails width (or about a half inch) between your toes and the end of the shoe. The shoe should be wide enough in the toe that your toes can move freely. Your heel should not slip, and the shoe should not pinch or bind, especially across the arch or ball of your foot. But remember, you can’t outrun a bad diet…

rainy days WRITTEN BY fiona stanton

It can be tricky to keep the kids entertained on those long rainy days, stuck indoors getting bored and restless with nothing to do, but luckily Town & City have found some fantastic fun activities to enjoy without being drenched to help turn those frowns upside down.

Town in a Box If you have some imaginative kids, building a small town in a cardboard box, is a great boredom buster, complete with roads, cars, plastic animals, let their minds run wild!

Board Games Board games are great to dig out when the weather is rubbish outside and keeps the kids entertained for hours, but be aware, they may want some adult volunteers too!

Baking Let’s get sticky in the kitchen with some homemade baking. This is great fun for all involved and once they’ve finished making their delicious baked goods, there’s always a few samples to try.

Make your own playdough Playdough is easy and simple to make at home and is non toxic! You can add food colouring and glitter to jazz it up a bit and to make little people from it for the cardboard box town! 8

Build a fort

Sock puppet show

Building secret hideaways under a table or with sofa cushions, pillows and blankets is great fun. You could either build a secret den with a sheet over the table and have a little picnic, or build a fort with cushions and whatever else they can find, and ‘man the fort’ inside the fortress.

Using some old socks, why not make your own puppet show! You could even use your homemade playdough to create the eyes, nose and mouth and then get the kids to put on a performance they’ll never forget.

Get Crafty

Turn that music up and flash some lights and torches and get into the groove. Getting the kids to shake it up on the dance floor, will easily get rid of that bored ‘down in the dumps’ feeling.

There are some great homemade activities found onnetmums.com/ activities/creative-play and it’s amazing what you can do with empty toilet rolls and don’t forget to try out ‘comb painting’ to create some beautiful pictures.

Indoor treasure hunt

Get your wellies out!

Creating a map with cryptic clues is a great way to pass the time and you can make it as elaborate as you want with these free treasure hunt sheets mykidstime.com/things-to-do/ indoor-treasure-hunt

If the kids are still bored after all those activities, why not embrace the rainy season and grab your wellies, get your waterproof coats on and get outside and splash in some puddles. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em!

Carol Klein is never happier than when surrounded by pruners, shears, secateurs and maybe the odd trowel. The gloriously greenfingered ‘Gardener’s World’ presenter and celebrated author of everything emphatically earthy was recently awarded the Victoria Medal by the Royal Horticultural Society, proving beyond doubt, that where there’s muck, there’s brass, as ‘Town & City’ discovered.

If ever you need convincing of the benefits of the great outdoors, take a look at Carol Klein. The presenter, author, columnist and former teacher could comfortably pass for someone 15 years her junior, yet at 73, she’s less worried about self-preservation and keener to maintain the flora and fauna of our back gardens. Th is is a tour de force in gardener terms - the ultimate authority on what makes a garden, who has nurtured the plant nursery at her home, Glebe Cottage, for some 35 years, bringing Life in a Cottage Garden to our screens and inspiring amateur growers across Great Britain. Yet it is for the BBC’s fl agship gardening show that she is best known. “I had almost 20 years on Gardener’s World, 16 shows a year, and it was such a rewarding experience,” she begins. “I’d love to say it was all down the amazing people I met along the way, but mostly my fascination was with flowers, plants, lawns and everything else that grows outside our homes.” “Being outdoors has always been such a breath of fresh air, literally, and I’m just lucky I’ve had a career that’s afforded me that privilege.” Klein is known for her colourful gardening aesthetic, preferring to be guided by the plant’s natural direction to create horticultural exuberance rather than following a strict formula. She loves the idea of subsistence crop production and growing your own food, and when it comes to putting produce to put on the table, Carol

recommends letting personal taste buds rule over trends. “Grow what you like eating,” she encourages. “You’d be amazed at the number of people who think that because it’s in a packet they’ll grow it, but think first about what you actually want to eat! And try and concentrate on having something to harvest and to eat from your plot right the way through the year - have vegetables you can pull at different times, and salads coming along constantly that you refill every few weeks, whether that’s rocket or leafy greens.” Pulling year round also ensures produce is varied, and means eager gardeners can avoid staring at bare beds. One of Klein’s own soil-to-table staples belongs to the leafy green family. “I love leaf beet and chard, and Rainbow Chard in particular,” she says. “Some have yellow leaves, some bright red, some green, but the plant tastes delicious and it’s a vegetable you can actually continue to grow right through the winter.” “I think successional sewing is the hardest thing to do – you need to make sure you don’t have huge gaps in crops and for that reason it’s a brilliant idea to grow in modules. You don’t have to buy lots of

Spring 2018

11

equipment; you can get a big tray and divide it up in cardboard. It just means when you’re ready to plant you’re not disturbing the roots.” Klein, who lives in Devon, has used her garden for both business and pleasure, doubling as a plant nursery and private space to relax in. “When we first moved down to Devon we tried selling plants at a few markets,” she says, “and the whole thing really blossomed from there. To be honest, I always fell in love with the garden rather than the house!” Ultimately, Klein’s charm lies in her knowledge and enthusiasm for a craft that doesn’t discriminate between amateur and professional gardeners. “We all make mistakes – we all try to be too ambitious or not ambitious enough, and really the soil will decide what’s going to take!” she says. “The real advantage for professional gardeners is an ability to spot the warning signs or read the conditions better, but there are no failsafes when it comes to gardening.” None at all? “Okay, perhaps carrots then,” she laughs. “I think carrots are tough, resilient things that virtually everyone can get along with.” “A little tip - when I’m growing them I prefer to put them all in pots to avoid carrot root fly, a horrible thing that sends larvae down into the crop, so when you pull them out they’ve got holes and spoils in them. Experts reckon carrot flies can’t fly far at all so if you grow them apart the flies can’t get access.” As well as a selection of kitchen table tasties, Carol is also feted for her wild flowers. “My garden is well known, and I’ve run it for 30 years. I think it’s lovely to give it such a rich and diverse purpose – with plants, food, perennials and various sprays of colour, and I’d encourage others to go after a multi-use space.” Carol will again be one of the standout guest speakers at Birmingham’s NEC for the 2018 Gardener’s World Live in the middle of June. She’s a regular at the event and admits it’s a world away from the solitude and serenity of her garden. “It is a bit of a contrast to get there around so much noise and excitement, but the best thing about gardening is sharing experiences with other people.” “We’re all on this journey together where we’re discovering and learning new things, and we can only do that if we talk, share advice and celebrate what we all have, which is a passion for gardens.” “I look now at a whole new generation of gardeners, right down to the very youngest ages. There’s a huge movement in schools, a massive push to sustainability and health eating, the rebirth of allotments all over the UK, and a real passion for plants that I just don’t think we appreciated a generation or two ago. It’s an exciting time to be outdoors!” 12

asbestos awareness You know it’s bad but do you know what it looks like? Reducing the risks of coming into contact with toxic asbestos is the aim of a Portsmouth-based business’s latest safety drive. Gully Howard Technical is launching an awareness drive in a bid to drive up safety standards that surround this deadly substance. Gully Howard Technical’s idea has been welcomed by Hampshire’s health boss, who is urging people sign up and share advice and information with their employees, friends and family to help raise awareness of asbestos. What it is, where to find it, how to manage it, related illnesses, legal obligations and more.’ There are around 3000 deaths per year due to asbestos related illnesses such as Mesothelioma, Asbestosis and COPD, and it’s not just men and tradesman who are affected or at risk. Those figures are just for deaths and do not show the amount of people currently managing asbestos related illness such as COPD. 16

WRITTEN BY kirsty PhilliPs

Although 80% of asbestos related deaths occur in men, women are still at risk often from 3rd party exposure through various means such as partners or household members asbestos ridden clothing being worn home and washed at home. The IACR has also found that ovarian cancer can be caused by asbestos exposure. With cases such as that of Mavis Nye (Mavis Nye foundation) who has suffered with Mesothelioma from secondary exposure as a result washing her husband’s asbestos covered work clothes at home it’s clear that the audience this campaigned is aimed at includes all of you! walks woodland

in hampshire

Hampshire offers some of the most scenic woodland walks in England. And now with summer approaching it’s time to get your boots on, pack a picnic and see what the county’s woods have in store. Here’s just some of the places ready for you to discover. Staunton Country Park Situated between Leigh Park and Rowlands Castle in Havant; Staunton Country Park offers a fun and twisting walk for families and dog walkers alike. There are clear footpaths and routes to follow. The longest route takes approximately 1 hour 45 minutes and will take you through the woods and around the farm and pond. Just don’t forget to bring your wellies as the paths can get muddy after wet weather. Look out for the sleeping giant and other wooden sculptures. As well as the fishing pond; complete with a tiny Island in which locals spend the day fishing on. Still not finished? Check out the farm there too. The perfect stop for an ice cream and to say hello to the farm’s Alpacas, llamas, ponies and more.

Buriton This one’s more out the way. Located a couple of miles away from the more well known Petersfield. Buriton is a small 18

Spring 2018

village that offers a quiet woodland walk amongst chalk pits and bluebells. Starting at the car park by the local church, you walk through a field that takes you to a path up the chalk pits. It’s not too much of a slope to walk up but like most woodland areas it is muddy after the rain.

It’s perfect for throwing a ball about with your dog and has lots of space for the kids to run wild. Alongside the walk towards the grand, Stansted House; there is a side track that is yes muddy but also full of old trees and shady spots perfect for a coffee stop. Just remember your fl ask!

Don’t miss the rope swing. Th is is fun for families and big kids alike and more importantly it’s free! Also don’t forget bread for the ducks if ending the day sitting by the pond is your thing. And finally top off your perfect spring day with lunch at local pub, The five Bells because there’s nothing like a well-earned pub lunch after a woodland walk.

Nearby you will find Stansted farm shop, a garden centre and a maze; to get lost in.

Stansted Park Located in East Hampshire, near Rowlands castle; Stansted lies on the border between Hampshire and West Sussex. It has a perfect woodland walk which is at it’s best in the summer; when you want a more cooler, quiet walk.

finally, if you’ve forgotten your fl ask then pop along to the Pavilion Tea Room. It boasts a delicious afternoon tea with views of Stansted House. Then top it all off with a walk around the Dutch Garden. A tranquil, spot to meander around after a scone or two.

Still in search of further places to walk in Hampshire? Check out Uppark, Harting Downs and Kingley Vale for further stunning green views right on your doorstep.

As internet communication improves and travel costs increase it’s no wonder so many people are choosing to avoid the daily commute in favour of the home office. Whether you’re self employed, your company made cuts and sent you to work from home, or you choose to work from home – while a home office isn’t necessarily a “musthave”, the benefits of a dedicated working space can’t be denied. If you're setting up your home office for the first time or looking to re-organise a space, it's important for you and your family to respect this room. Hang a sign and close the door when working so everyone knows that you’re busy and not to be disturbed.

storage for files and documents. Give yourself ample space and keep up to date with latest upgrades – remember, it's your responsibility to keep your office running with supplies. There are enormous benefi ts to developing your own work space, but be careful not to create distractions.

When the time comes to switch off for the day, close the door to avoid temptation to pop in or use the room for recreation. This can blur the lines between work and play and disrupt the harmony you've been working to create.

The most important thing to remember is to remain professional. It's easy to sit in your pyjamas or relax your working hours, so respect your business and treat heading to your home office as if you were leaving the house. It's not uncommon for home workers to dress for the day in suits and ties – and this has been proven effective in getting your mind into the right place, although it's not for everyone.

Once you’ve established your office as a workonly space, gather everything you need. A desk to suit your requirements, a comfortable chair, computers, printers and stationery as well as 22

a life

in words Hyped up with a big window display one moment and priced down at the bottom of the bargain bin the next. Books and subjects whose time in the public eye is often as fleeting as the shelf life of the person whose story they claim to tell. These accounts of the rich and once famous end up telling you, the reader, very little at all. Yet mainstream publishers will rush such stories into print almost as soon as the person in question falls out of a taxi, takes part in a lowbrow TV show or sleeps with someone a little bit more famous than themselves.

The nations book shops will forever be teetering under the weight of the massed ranks of celebrity ‘autobiographies’ that populate their shelves like a flavour of the month who’s who. Whilst stories of those amongst you who have led long and worthwhile lives, often accomplishing or witnessing great things are being lost forever. Stories that have a real value.

most notorious men in international history. Yet he’d tell that story, and others, in the same matter of fact way that you or I might recall buying our daily newspaper every morning”.

Writer and Broadcaster Edward Couzens-Lake wants your voice and your story to be told and for you to have the opportunity for it to be recorded in a book.

“I began to realise that his situation and story would be by no means unique, that there would be lots of people like Dad alive and living quiet lives today who have equally amazing stories and memories to call their own. I don’t want to see these stories lost forever, I want to give people the opportunity to tell them and for them to be recorded, forever, in a book”.

‘My Life Story’, an idea that occurred to Edward in the days and weeks after his father passed away in 2014. “Dad lived a remarkable life. It didn’t seem so on the outside but he was a man who’d seen and done a lot of remarkable things. During his time in the Army, he served Rudolf Hess supper whilst Hitler’s ex-deputy was being held as a prisoner in Spandau jail. There he was, the son of a Norfolk farm worker with daily access to one of the

“These are the people whose lives matter. These are the stories that need to be told. I want to give those individuals the opportunity to tell them and share them with everyone. They’re so important. Let’s not lose them”.

Couzens-Lake works in conjunction with a UK publisher doing just that. Their aim is to provide a personal yet highly professional and cost effective way for anyone to tell their life story and for it, ultimately, to be published and presented to them in the form of a high quality book. Photographs can be included with unique and striking front and rear cover designs, specifically designed for your book, all included as part of the service. The finished book can be in softback, hardback or a combination of both.

We’re passionate about you and the stories you have to tell

It’s that time of year again, summer holidays are here and it seems like everyone everywhere is going away. Beach holidays, cruises, UK breaks and city breaks, whatever your preferred holiday, it’s impossible to escape the dreaded task of packing. We’re here with some tops tips to make the packing process a little more bearable and help keep you in the holiday mood.

Waterproof bags

Shoe storage

holiday packing WRITTEN BY emma roberts

Check ahead find out what your hotel provides. Even the very basic of hotels will at least provide towels and a hairdryer. These bulky items take up a lot of room especially in a cabin sized suitcase. Avoid packing unnecessary items and use this space for other essentials. 26

Spring 2018

Think ahead about the type of holiday you’re going to have and the footwear required. Save space by packing socks and underwear or any other small items into your shoes. It might be worth wrapping them in a plastic bag to keep them fresh!

Rolling Consider rolling your clothing. You’d be surprised how much more you can fi t into your suitcase, and if you’re lucky, you won’t need to iron them when you get to the other side. Items like heavy trousers can be laid fl at at the bottom or across the top. Place solid or fragile items inbetween rolled items and squeeze in the extra little bits when you’re full.

The horror stories of leaking toiletries are endless. Avoid this completely by making sure you wrap all leakable objects, including sun tan lotions, shower gels and hair products in a plastic carrier bag or other effective waterproof protection. It’s more effective to wrap each product individually so that you can place them in the gaps instead of placing them altogether in one bulk.

Avoid extra costs It’s hard to keep track on the weight of your case. You could get to the airport and be greeted with an extra charge for overweight luggage if you’re not careful. To avoid this embarrassing and expensive situation, invest in some luggage scales. You can pick these up quite cheaply and use them over and over again. It might even be worth packing them for the return journey after filling up on gifts and holiday purchases. It pays to be prepared.

ways for a

happier

Is it that time of the month again? Periods can bring on cramps, cause mood swings and even put a dampener on a good nights sleep. To help you get one up on Mother Nature we’ve asked our experts for their top tips on how to power through your period… Curb the cravings Cravings can sometimes tie in with Mother Nature’s monthly delivery of a period. A woman’s appetite usually increases particularly during the second half of the menstrual cycle. Instead of reaching for all the chocolate bars in the house, try healthier carbs – your body will thank you for it! The most crucial dietary change you can make is to keep your blood-sugar levels steady: the higher your sugar intake the more severe your symptoms are likely to be. And you will be caught in a vicious cycle in that the more your blood sugar fluctuates the stronger sugar/food cravings you have and the more your blood sugar fluctuates. 28

Spring 2018

period Cut out sugar completely. Don’t add it to drinks or cereal or anything else. Avoid sweet foods such as chocolate and refined foods such as white flour and watch out for hidden sugars by reading labels. To help beat cravings try a snack including protein and complex carbohydrates. Try eating a boiled egg with some vegetable sticks or some oat cakes with nut butters. It’s entirely possible to retrain yourself to break old, bad habits and adopt new, positive ones, to help you curb your food cravings. You need to identify your behaviours and make a decision to stop them. Then replace them with a positive strategy for curbing old habit patterns. This may take effort and time, as we often hang on to what is familiar, but if you stick to it, you will soon be reaping the rewards for a little thoughtful decision-making, retraining and application of willpower.

Don’t spend all day curled up You may feel like you want to spend the day tucked up with a duvet, but try not to be a couch potato. Regular exercise is important as it lowers cortisol production, as long as it is not too intense. Exercise also increases the levels of those feel good brain chemicals called endorphins, which can improve your mood.

Protein is made up of long chains of amino acids. When you eat protein your body breaks it down into its different amino acids, which then travel into your bloodstream to reach your brain. You have a blood-brain barrier, which controls what gets into your brain, so a competition starts to take place. There are fewer tryptophan molecules than the other amino acids. Therefore, other amino acids get across the barrier leaving the tryptophan behind. But, if a meal contains a starchy carbohydrate as well, the situation is very different. Carbohydrates cause your body to release insulin and the insulin makes use of the other amino acids, leaving the tryptophan to dominate. It’s interesting that when we are feeling depressed we tend to want to eat bread, cakes, sweets and sugary foods, all of which are starchy carbohydrates. However, what is important here is the type of carbohydrate. Healthy, whole carbohydrates provide a sustained release of energy, while refined foods cause a rise insulin and blood sugar fluctuations.

Prevent feeling like the size of a house When surfing the crimson wave, you may feel more bloated than usual. Cut down on salt to reduce bloating and water retention. Don’t be tempted to limit your intake of fluids, which can actually increase bloating. Your body will think it needs to conserve water, which exacerbates the problem. Water is a natural diuretic and it should be drunk as frequently as possible, particularly when you are retaining water.

Clear your diary for some 'you time' Set aside regular time to do something that you love and that makes you feel good: reading a good book, watching your favourite television programme, going for a massage, or having a long bath. Doing things that we love naturally lowers our stress hormones.

Put away the tissues One minute you’re hysterically laughing, the next minute you’re hysterically crying. Ring any bells? To help prevent soaring mood swings combine protein (vegetable or animal) with unrefined starchy carbohydrates. Tryptophan is an important amino acid for depression. Your body makes serotonin (the ‘feel good’ brain chemical) from an amino acid called tryptophan. Tryptophan occurs naturally in foods such as dairy products, fish, bananas, dried dates, soya, almonds and peanuts.

Go green Green tea is an excellent healthy mood booster. It contains some caffeine, which gives you a bit of a lift, but also contains the amino acid theanine. Theanine can have a relaxing effect and may help to relieve anxiety and mental stress, potentially by increasing your levels of serotonin, dopamine (responsible for reward and pleasure), and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA, which has a relaxant effect).

Catch up with a friend after work If you're feeling down in the dumps, spend time with a loved one. Oxytocin is another ‘feel good’ hormone. Released when we bond socially and feel general trust, comfort and love. This hormone is just as powerful as serotonin. Whenever you feel low and need a lift, spend time with your family and friends to mellow down and feel instantly better.

Have an early night According to the National Sleep foundation some women are more likely to struggle to sleep when they are on their period, as the core temperature can rise by almost half a degree after ovulation, which can make you feel less sleepy. feeling irritable and tired is not a great start to a happier period, so put down that to-do list and get tucked up. To help you feel relaxed and ready for bed try and include plenty of magnesium-rich foods in your diet such as, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, fish and leafy green vegetables.

tomatoes for the heart

WalnUts for the brain

Not only does the bright red colour of tomatoes resemble blood flow, when sliced you can see that tomatoes have four chambers resembling the structure of the heart. Lycopene is the antioxidant responsible for tomato’s bright red colour and is the main antioxidant which provides heart health benefits. Studies have shown that lycopene may enhance harmful LDL cholesterol degradation, whilst reducing risk of atherosclerosis and strokes. For maximum benefit, go for cooked tomatoes. Interestingly these are a far richer source of lycopene than raw tomatoes.

Walnuts look incredibly like a brain and they’re a good source of Omega 3 – the essential fatty acid that helps with memory and concentration.

body food bananas for yoUr smile

The shape of a banana resembles the shape our lips make when we smile, so what’s the connection? Bananas contain tryptophan, which the body then turns into serotonin (the ‘feel good’ hormone). The manufacture of serotonin depends on how much tryptophan is transported into your brain. Dairy products, fish, dried dates, soya, almonds and peanuts are all foods which also naturally contain tryptophan. Combining these foods with unrefined carbohydrates, such as brown rice, wholemeal bread or oats, helps the body to release insulin to help tryptophan uptake to the brain. 34

Spring 2018

We’ve all heard the phrase ‘you are what you eat’ but there may be more truth to this than we first thought. Here are a selection foods which benefit the body part they resemble… celery for the bones

Ironically celery sticks look like the structure of bones, whilst also being a bone strengthening food. Celery is jam-packed full of vitamin K, which works in tandem with Vitamin D for the production of new bone cells called osteoclasts. Vitamin K is also needed for the absorption of calcium, a mineral playing a vital role in the prevention of osteoporosis.

red Wine for the blood

ginger for the stomach

Ginger resembles the shape of our stomachs and may just be what you need for digestive issues and that slim stomach! It helps to normalise the functions of the intestines and the stomach. Consuming a ginger tea with a meal is a great idea.

Red wine is known for having a high content of a powerful antioxidant called resveratrol. Resveratrol helps prevent cardiovascular health conditions such as high cholesterol, by protecting blood cells and platelets. It also has a slight blood thinning property which helps prevent blood clots that are associated with heart disease and strokes. mUshrooms for the ears

A mushroom when sliced in half looks remarkably like an ear. Mushrooms are quite unusual in that they are one of the very few foods which contain Vitamin D. Vitamin D is important for bone health – remember that the ear has 3 tiny and delicate bones in the ear that transmit sound to the brain. People who suffer from hearing problems are often Vitamin D deficient.

aVocado for the Womb

Avocado has been dubbed by some as ‘the world’s most perfect food’ due to its array of wondering health benefits. This fertility fruit not only resembles the womb and cervix, it also takes 9 months to grow from blossom to a ripened fruit, mirroring the development of a human baby within the womb. Avocados are rich in folate: a B vitamin essential for cell division during foetal growth in pregnancy. Folate also plays a vital role in the prevention of neural tube defects, such as spina bifida. Avocados are also rich in monounsaturated fats. Research has shown that these fats could help triple the chances of conception via IVF, with women being advised to eat an avocado a day. red kidney beans for the kidneys

Red kidney beans look so much like the human kidney that they have been named after them! They are incredibly high in fibre which helps with our digestive system. They are also a great source of magnesium and potassium.

Studies have shown that people who don’t have enough magnesium and potassium in their diets increase their risk of suffering from kidney stones. They are delicious to add to your diet and can be eaten either hot or cold.

finding the

perfect job WRITTEN BY glenn a barr

Rule 1: Never give up!

Rule 4: Gain experience!

Searching for a job online is similar in many ways to attracting the ideal partner on a dating site. One exposes every aspect of their personality in the hope that suitable management will take notice and offer a perfect elusive opportunity. Always remember that resilience is the key to success!

Years ago, a good 2:1 degree (in any subject) would often be enough to secure a suitable graduate position. However, modern times equally require the nagging evil twin of education... experience! Work for free if necessary and go that extra mile. After all, an employer is only one click away from moving to the next candidate!

Rule 2: Adaptability! People often state that they’ll never apply for a job with a particular organisation again, if unsuccessful. Indeed, negativity is a difficult cycle to break away from, but job seekers need to look beyond personal constraints and adapt, particularly when seeking employment via the internet.

Rule 3: Be creative and concise! The job market has evolved considerably in recent years and employers are able to shue between thousands of applicants with the click of a button. Indeed, a one page CV seems to be the correct way to advertise skills, ensuring that notable achievements are highlighted accordingly. Therefore, the job hunter must become a cut above the rest and stand out from the crowd. 38

Spring 2018

Rule 5: Research! The interview process has changed beyond recognition, taking the form of recorded video responses to preset questions or those dreaded online tests! If an applicant is lucky enough to be transported to the final stage, preparation always prevails. Sift through relevant websites connected to the potential employer and offer realistic improvement suggestions for their company. Be positive, be polite, be persistent and that perfect job will materialise in time.

Now that Spring has most definitely sprung, for many of us it’s a time to wash and clean away the winter grime and dirt. This Winter, with its snow and ice, was particularly hard on our cars as the cold and road salt takes its toll. Now warmer, drier weather has arrived, the time is right to give your pride and joy some care and attention. There’s a lot to be said for washing your car yourself as it can give you the opportunity to take a close look at the condition your vehicle is in. The professionals from car care experts, Reep Southern at Dunsfold, share their tips for giving your car a deeper clean than an automatic car wash ever could.

take yoUr time Th is is important. You don’t want to cause any unintentional damage because you’re rushing to finish. don’t Wash yoUr car on a hot day Whilst it might be tempting to take the opportunity to contribute to your tan, intense temperatures can affect the products that you are using. Also, hot weather causes water to evaporate more quickly which can leave you with grimy residue on the paintwork.

Pre-clean yoUr car following an all over cold pressure wash, spray a universal cleaner all over. Then working from the bottom up, so as not to dilute the solution, rinse the car thoroughly with the pressure washer to remove as much dirt, mud and grime as possible. Don’t stand too close to the car, if using a jet washer, as you don’t want to cause any damage.

Use 2 bUckets Your Dad might have embraced the single bucket and sponge approach but it’s far better to use two. One filled with just water for rinsing and the other with washing solution. And make sure both buckets have a grit guard to catch any bits of debris that might damage the paintwork.

Pick the right tools for the job Always use a car washing shampoo; washing up liquid is great for plates but will strip away the wax from your car and could damage the paint. Wash mitts are better than sponges, having been designed to remove the most dirt possible as well as being better for your car’s paintwork. When it comes to drying use either a blower or triple layered microfibre cloths to get a streak free finish. Use a clay bar for some extra tlc Although your car might look smooth there is a likelihood that the bodywork has some lumps and bumps from grime that has bonded onto the paintwork. Add some shampoo to a clay bar which will act as a lubricant and then run the bar across the bodywork. This will remove any stubborn dirt and imperfections.

look after the Wheels and arches This area can see a big build-up of mud, grime and harmful road salt following cold, icy weather. After power washing, use shampoo with sponges and brushes to ensure no grime remains. Do choose your products carefully though, making sure they are specially formulated for your type of wheel. If you’re not sure what to use, go for an acid free PH neutral aluminium wheel cleaner. These are a few tips that will take your car washing skills up a level and there are other, more advanced steps you can add to your cleaning repertoire. But if using a depth gauge to deal with the imperfections in your paintwork or dressing the engine and re-greasing is a little too much, then put a call in to the experts at Reep Southern at Dunsfold’s famous race track.

The Social Butterfly We all know one of these. The person that can make friends with a brick wall, is happiest when in a crowd and gets invited to every party in town. When it comes to exercising, it’s all about the social experience, and breaking a sweat while having fun with others is far more important than the workout itself. Social Butterflies tend to embody a positive energy and have a flexible approach to exercise, therefore, are keen to try new things – so long as it involves social interaction. Needless to say, group fitness classes and team sports are best suited to these individuals, especially if they are fun and energetic. Social Butterflies also tend to have a competitive streak, and are often motivated by external factors, such as achievement, recognition, and praise. Favourite workouts: Beach volleyball, fitness boot camps, racquet sports.

The Go-Getter You live your life at 100mph and are always looking for the next challenge. for you, the only way is up and you thrive on competition and success. Go-Getters are intense individuals and tend to be externally motivated, therefore, respond well to specific training plans to reach personal goals, such as improving fitness or losing weight. Types of exercise activity that suit Go-Getters include high intensity training, cardio conditioning and competitive sports. These individuals are highly motivated, and are likely to excel in their chosen activity because of this. Their need for results can often leave Go-Getters impatient and frustrated, so a very specific, time-sensitive and actionoriented approach to exercise is recommended. Favourite workouts: HIIT, spinning, triathlon.

Are you a self-confessed control freak who loves predictability and routine? Then you are most likely a Planner. Often more on the introvert side of the spectrum, this personality-type enjoys physical activities where there is an emphasis on mind-body connection, involve little risk and are inherently self-focused. Indeed, Planners tend to favour solo activities and the list of suitable exercise can extend to anything that can be enjoyed alone, from yoga to running. Planners tend to gravitate towards familiar and comfortable exercises, therefore, incorporating new techniques and challenges into their routine is key. Favourite workouts: Yoga, Pilates, running.

The Adventurer Adventurers have a zest for life and an innate need to explore. Inherently spontaneous, they’ll try anything new; the riskier or wackier the better! They’re not afraid of new challenges and this extends to their health and fitness choices. Whether ziplining through forests or white-water rafting, Adventurers live off the adrenaline rush and often favour outdoor activities. While they are determined to get results, Adventurers tend to be impulsive and find it difficult to maintain a prescribed fitness regime. These individuals require plenty of variety and new challenges to keep them motivated. Favourite workouts: Mountain trekking, surfing, canyoning.

Both are made with waterproof ripstop polyester 70d fabric, offering a high strength to weight ratio and great weather resistance, while all groundsheet and flysheet seams are fully taped for maximum waterproofing. They weigh in at 2.65Kg and 3.35Kg and can be pitched in just ten minutes.

Lightweight and spacious, the foehn 2 and 3 are free-standing dome tents with plenty of head height and lots of ventilation. featuring a 360 degree inner mesh, in the very hottest climates the inner can be used on its own without the flysheet, which has vents to the front and back, plus multiple door tie back options for ultimate comfort.

Wild Country’s Carolyn Budding said: “Campers are increasingly venturing further afield in search of better weather and new experiences – and that means their kit needs to be suitable for different climates and terrain. The Foehn 2 and 3 meet these needs and ensure campers have plenty of options no matter what the weather.”

for wild camping, the foehn 2 and 3 free-standing design means it can be easily pitched on stony or

This is Cobstock’s 9th year and those who have been joining us for years consider it to be their well kept secret. The festival offers live music from 6pm on friday right through to 3pm on Sunday. Land and water based activities are run by Cobnor Activities Centre on both Saturday and Sunday. Great real Ales and Cider and a fabulous Cocktail Yurt as well as a rich variety of food is available all weekend. for budding young musicians, Ovation Music are running a build a band session followed by a performance on stage on Saturday afternoon.

David Attenborough has made us all sit up and take notice about plastic waste and being seaside dwellers we’re aiming to lead by example. To that end, this year we are selling reuseable cups in the bar and encouraging our food concessions to use compostable or recyclable containers. It’s a small step but an important one. Camping is available next to the event field so pack up your tents, leave your worries behind and join us for the weekend. BOOK AT COBNOR.COM OR CALL 01243 572791. ALL ACTIVITIES ARE BOOKABLE IN ADVANCE WHEN BUYING TICKETS.
