a word from the
Festive wishes to one and all… I can’t believe we’re at the end of the year already, but there’s still plenty to squeeze into 2018 before the clock strikes midnight, even as the temperatures drop and the sunshine fades. I love this time of year. The crisp mornings, the faint smell of wood fires and the crunch of fallen leaves, not to mention snuggling up with mulled wine and warming winter woollies. evening’s in with close friends and sunday afternoon’s whiled away with the kids. In typical Town & City tradition we’ve packed this issue full to the brim with everything you need to see you through the coming months including festive activities in the south downs, and hidden high-street hot-spots. We chat with keira knightley as she celebrates the release of her latest movie, Colette, and discover how to maintain a healthy work-life balance. There’s so much more mention, so why not cosy up with a drop of your favourite tipple and check it out for yourself. see you in 2019! Town & City Magazine is brought to you by Tidbury Media who also publish Mayhem! Magazine and provide a whole host of creative services. We’d love to hear from you.
If you have a business, event or service that you’d like Town & City readers to know about, please don’t hesitate to get in touch, we look forward to hearing from you. town-city.co.uk

high street hot spot Dating back to around 1865, Marmion Road, nestled in the heart of portsmouth’s southsea district, is a hidden backstreet charm.
Much of southsea, including Marmion Road, was destroyed by German bombings in the second World War. Although the area has since been rebuilt, the road was very rundown with vacant plots for many years, until the arrival of Waitrose in the 1970s which sparked a huge regeneration. Throughout the years Marmion Road has seen the coming and going of countless independent businesses and local traders, many sadly pushed out by rising costs. As the area and it’s reputation has improved, more and more affluent, aspiring businesses have moved in creating a feel-good place to be and attracting people from near and far. 10
Autumn/Winter 2018/19
Today, Marmion Road, although still often neglected by locals or missed entirely by visitors, is thriving. Tucked behind the pedestrianised section of palmerson Road - accessible from the north via Victoria Road south - Marmion Road is bursting to life with boutiques, cafe´s, artisan crafts, jewellers and florists, design and interior specialists, fashion outlets, gift shops and furniture sellers. There’s literally something for everyone, whether searching for a gift or something new to wear, having a bite to eat or just whiling away an hour or two, this secret hideaway on the sunny southcoast is well worth a visit.

Number crunching
why
vegan? WRITTEN BY JACCi gooding
According to The Guardian newspaper “the number of vegans in the UK has risen by 350% in the past decade – a movement driven by the young.” That is a staggering statistic. This increase is driven by teenagers who have used social media to support and educate their peers. As the quickest and easiest form of communication, social networking platforms have been embraced by young people who want to get the message out there and make a change in the world for the better. There are now more vegan teenagers than there have ever been in the history of the vegan movement, which began in 1944. Th is has led to huge growth in ethical and environmental awareness within the teens age group. The online group Vgneration (formerly TeenVGN) was founded in 2013 by two such young women, and their website is an uplifting, networking support group for young vegetarians and vegans.
Nut crunching No matter what your age, welcoming the vegan diet into your life can lead to a healthier you. No matter what stage you are at, no matter how hard you think it would be to decide, adopt and adapt, there is plenty of help and advice available. The Vegan society, for example has The Vegan pledge that can help you get going. Their advice to “keep your end goal in mind, but go at your own pace...It’s not a one size fi ts all experience” is sound advice indeed. There is more advice on the Vegan society website where you can sign up to their 30 day pledge to give vegan living a go. You may find your diet expands considerably when you discover how many other things there are to eat.
Crunch time If you take the plunge and believe in yourself, what you’re doing and why, you will find that each day becomes easier. Many people don’t understand and don’t want to understand certain lifestyle choices and there is nothing you can do about that. But remember you wouldn’t be giving up eating animals to please For some it’s all about the ethics, other people, only yourself, and the statistics show that for others it’s health, and for many thousands of other people think the same. It is a great it’s the environment. Whatever your mind-shift, a complete 180 change of attitude. You don’t have to bang a gong, shout it from the rooftops or have it reasons for going vegan, nourish your tattooed on your forehead. so you don’t eat animals or their knowledge first to ensure you get the by-products - who cares? It’s your business, no-one else’s. When things get tough, stay focussed on why you chose the very best, mentally and physically, vegan path in the first place and remind yourself every so often from the choices you make. why you’ve chosen a vegan lifestyle. A visit to your nearest animal sanctuary may help reaffirm your choice. spending time with animals that traditionally are farmed for human consumption could help to your strengthen your commitment. 14

Sugar Free Gum “How can a tiny piece of gum cause bloating? Often a lot of excess air is swallowed when chewing and the trapped air causes the stomach to bloat. Gum also contains not so easily digested carbohydrate sugars, like sorbitol. These sugars cause gut fermentation leading to digestive discomfort and symptoms like bloating, cramping and even pain.

bloated? Bloating is often an indicator that your gut is unhappy and there are several reasons why this could be happening. It’s widely regarded that certain foods can make you feel bloated, most commonly foods including wheat and dairy. However, there are some sneaky everyday foods that could secretly be bloating you! Apples and Pears Both apples and pears are ideal for on the go snacking and are packed with fibre, ideal to satiate dieters. However, the fibre may be troublesome for sensitive tummies. If this is the case you can minimise your portion size and slowly increase it as your tolerance rises. Always ensure fruits are washed before eating, to avoid pesticides that kill gut flora and cause bloating.

Popcorn popcorn is championed for its health benefi ts despite its ability to cause bloating. even an adequate serving of 3-4 handfuls, only delivers the same amount of carbohydrates as a single slice of bread. Despite its low carb value, it still takes up volume in the stomach and this often leads to temporary bloating.
Mushrooms Mushrooms contain polyols which are sugar alcohols that are too large and difficult for the small intestine to digest. This may lead to bloating and tummy upsets.
If you suffer from bloating then perhaps it’s time to minimise your consumption of the above foods! Alix recommends including sense* for Gut Health Superfood Supplement Powder into your daily diet, “this is the perfect supplement for optimum digestive health as it has been expertly designed to support gut membranes, digestive enzymes and healthy stomach acids. The powders are easy to add to smoothies and juices and they contain no added sugar or gluten.” thiS SuperFood Supplement powder iS available in both 35g (£6.99 www.SenSeproductS.co.uk), perFect For travelling and trialling and 150g (£21.99, SenSeproductS.co.uk). SenSe* productS are alSo available in Store and online at bootS.com.
Canned Soup You may think your favourite canned soups are a healthy food choice but often they are laden with salt and as a result the kidneys struggle to clear it which causes water retention and bloating in the stomach. Choose cans with less salt or better still make your own!
Dried Fruit Dried fruit can be a great source of nutrients and fibre; however, it can cause bloating for those who suffer from fructose malabsorption. Th is occurs when the body has difficulty absorbing the natural sugars. Also, it is often preserved with sulphur dioxide which can cause immediate stomach discomfort and bloating.
Coffee Adding dairy can trigger bloating if you’re lactose-intolerant, but black coffee can cause some bloating troubles too. Coffee itself is acidic, so if you have a sensitive stomach, it can act as an irritant and cause swelling. To avoid this, keep your dose of coffee small and monitor how you feel when you drink it.

warm
winter
wake up
Stay warm in bed this winter and take advantage of the longer nights to refresh your sleep routine, is the advice from The Sleep Council. Dark mornings and evenings can have lots of amazing health benefi ts including helping you get a better night’s sleep. Melatonin - the hormone that stimulates sleep - is produced when daylight starts to fade, which occurs far earlier during winter. So take advantage of the fact that your body will fall asleep earlier and stay asleep for longer. However, with temperatures usually at their lowest during the early hours, the risk for many people is waking up shivering and being too cold to get a good night's rest. Read on for our top tips to help ensure you don't freeze during the night but stay warm as toast.
PJs Wear night clothes such as pyjamas or a large T-shirt to keep you cosy. Natural fibres such as wool, cotton or silk are better than synthetic materials.
Warm bath Have a warm bath just before you go to bed. This will raise your body temperature which in turn will also help to make you sleepy.
Hot drink Have a warm milky drink before bed. Ovaltine or Horlicks are good. 18
Autumn/Winter 2018/19
Water bottle
Mattress
A hot water bottle is an ideal way to keep cosy once in bed. Make sure it has a cover on it to avoid scalding and also so that it won’t feel cold in the middle of the night.
Avoid a saggy bed. It may be nice to cuddle up to share a bit of body heat when you first get into bed, but it can be very uncomfortable and clammy during the night if you are thrown together by a bed that isn't giving you the correct support.
Move about Try to take some exercise which will get the circulation going.
Bedding It is also worth looking at the bedroom, the bed and the bedding all of which play a part in keeping you insulated in the cold night air. keep the bedroom around 16° to 18° and free from draughts.
Duvet Choose a duvet with a high tog rating or use several layers of bedding rather than one single layer. layers will trap the air and are easily removed if you get too hot.
look for a mattress which has a thicker side for use during the winter. A soft sleeping surface is a better insulator than a fl at one. Use a fleecy underblanket to retain the heat.
Electric blankets electric blankets are ideal. Underblankets will warm the bed up before you retire for the night, while overblankets maintain a constant temperature throughout the night.

work-life for new
parents
WRITTeN BY Conor MCArdle
In the wake of National Work-Life Week, we’ve been thinking about the ways we work and how we balance the different commitments in our lives. Work takes up a large slice of our time, but it has to fit around family and social life – and returning to work after parental leave can present some challenges, particularly if you’re a business leader. For many new parents, there will be a spectrum of emotions to contend with, from excitement and nerves, to a tinge of guilt and dislocation. 20
Autumn/Winter 2018/19
so, if you’re a new mum or dad preparing to return to work, you may want to think about putting practices into place to ensure a smooth transition. Our friends at Brighter Business have put together some simple advice on how to strike the perfect work-life balance as a new parent.
Advertise with us, call 01243 430592
balance Does work-life balance exist? If not, how do I make it work?
As a business leader, you’ll know exactly the sort of challenges you’ll face in your day-to-day work. The challenge of balancing them when you have a small human to look after can be daunting. Don’t fret – a healthy work-life balance can exist! It’s not always easy, but there are a few key principles to succeeding when you go back to work: StArt Slowly Don’t throw yourself back in at the deep end. Before your departure from work, important tasks would’ve been handed over to a trusted colleague or shelved until it could be given the necessary time and attention. Keep-in-touCh (kIT) days are a great way to maintain contact with whoever has been left in charge in your absence and provide you with updates on how things are progressing and any issues or challenges. You can spread these out over the duration of your leave without feeling like it compromises on the quality of time spent with family, while also helping you to keep your finger on the pulse of the business. StAgger A staggered return, where you return to work on a reduced basis, for example two days a week for a month before increasing your days, could also help the transition. even if you own the business, you should implement the same procedure as you would for one of your employees. don’t CoMproMiSe While remote working can be great for new parents, it can also be problematic in blurring the
lines between work and family. The nature of the “always-on” culture in an increasinglyconnected world means that workaholism can impact family life. Don’t compromise on the quality of either; when working from home, make sure you’re working. When you’re spending time together as a family, don’t give in to the temptation to check work emails. expect the same from your colleagues as you would yourself, and the boundaries for everyone will be crystal clear. ShAre the loAd It’s easy to quickly fall into a routine where one parent is responsible for the daily drop off and pick up, meaning that person is under pressure each day to finish on time. Could your partner, a family member or close friend help each week or even a few times a month to help take the pressure off you? Don’t be afraid to ask for help, remember juggling last minute work deadlines with set pick up times from the child minder can be tricky and sometimes, you simply can’t do it all. If you still can’t make it work, then talk to your employer or HR to see if there are other arrangements or initiatives that you could take advantage of.
Autumn/Winter 2018/19
21
hAndling returning eMployeeS All of the above also applies to any employees within your business that are returning from parental leave. Having a reduced schedule with greater flexibility, at least to begin with, can help to ease recent parents back in to the workplace without too much stress. “Returnships” are one way to help parents return to the workplace, whether recently or after a prolonged absence due to family commitments. These sorts of programmes can help employees to re-establish their careers in the same business by bringing back highly-skilled, knowledgeable and experienced individuals without compromising on family life or other personal commitments. Be flexiBle A more flexible schedule – whether that entails reduced hours, working from home, or other arrangements – can help to provide a supportive framework for parents who need time to adjust to the twin pressures of work and family life.

happy how to survive a long car journey without a tantrum

Travelling with young children can be a daunting thought, especially when it’s in the car. Squabbling siblings and constant requests for toilet stops can be enough to drive parents mad or even put them off the trip all together. Fear not though, T&C is here with some top tips to help avoid toddler tantrums when on the road. Autumn/Winter 2018/19
Advertise with us, call 01243 430592
Keep them entertained Make sure to pack plenty of toys to avoid young kids getting bored and having a meltdown, or opt for games such as eye spy, car bingo and the licence plate game which are great ways to pass time and keep children occupied. CDs and audio books will also provide great entertainment and help them relax. Be wary that looking down at books or tablets for long periods is more likely to give children motion sickness so try to restrict their usage when possible.
“Are we there yet?” When kids are constantly asking how far is left to go, twist the truth and reassure them that you are almost there. kids have little sense of time and are less likely to throw a tantrum if they think it’s a short journey. One way of doing this is to break the drive up with regular stops and portray it as multiple smaller trips. Remember to stop often, but not too often, and not for too long - just enough time for a toilet break and to stretch your legs. Otherwise you run the risk of extending your journey unnecessarily.
Travel in the evening By driving in the evening, you are coinciding with your child’s bedtime meaning they are much more likely to sleep through the journey. This is also a good way to cut back on stops as you will inevitably make less toilet breaks if children are asleep, meaning you can press on with the journey. A good tip is to dress children in their pyjamas before setting off so they are comfortable and more likely to fall asleep. They will also associate this with bedtime and wind down naturally, meaning they are less likely to have a tantrum.
Make sure there’s enough space pack strategically to ensure the car isn’t over crowded as kids will feel uncomfortable and claustrophobic if they don’t have enough space. Make sure everything you need is to hand to cut back on stops. snacks, drinks, anti-sickness medicine and a change of clothes are all must-haves. For kids that get car sick, try to take the sick bags off planes next time you’re flying to stash in the car.
Tire them out By incorporating physical activity into the trip, children will be tired and more likely to sleep through the drive. Time the journey to include some playtime beforehand or research your route to see if you pass any National parks or english Heritage sites for some fresh air and a stroll. Not only will this allow kids to let off steam, but fresh air will help clear the head of whoever is driving.

keira knightley interview by SiMone lee

From her first touch of the ball as sparky tomboy Jules in Bend it Like Beckham, it was apparent that actress keira knightley was in a league of her own. On the outside she exuded all the usual traits of the Hollywood starlet-in-waiting: an ethereal elegance, english rose beauty, and that dash of something magical; that rare charisma which few possess. But within there was evidence of a fire burning. A fierce independence which has allowed her to play complex women who refuse to take their place in a patriarchal society, from Jane Austen’s elizabeth Bennett to her most recent role as real-life French novelist sidonie-Gabrielle Collette.
In an era of where women’s rights are at the forefront of so much discussion, Keira Knightley’s return is typically relevant, and wonderfully timed.
Articulate, intelligent and more than happy to self-analyse, keira has concluded that it is her parents – actors sharman McDonald and Will knightley – she has to thank for her bloody-mindedness. “I was raised to have an independent spirit and mind, and to learn to make my own way in life. My parents never tried to control me and that gave me an enormous sense of freedom,” she explains. “It’s almost been intimidating to have been given that kind of personal and creative space - it took me a while before I truly felt as confident as I should have been. But I think you learn more and ultimately have a greater sense of self-worth if you’re allowed to make your mistakes and evolve with the sense that this is your life and career, and you have to take responsibility for it.” Naturally keira’s own upbringing has had a bearing on her role as a mother to three-year-old edie, with the 33-year-old actress recently admitting that she refuses to let her daughter watch Disney films that fail to portray women in alignment with her feminist values. she told ellen DeGeneres that at home Cinderella was “banned because she waits around for a rich guy to rescue her,” before adding sarcastically: “Don’t! Rescue yourself.” As for The Little Mermaid, keira said dismayingly: “The songs are great, but do not give your voice up for a man. Hello!” such declarations inevitably draw both admiration and ire, particularly considering the fact that arguably the biggest role of the actress’s career was as a Disney heroine. And while her character elizabeth swann in the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was hardly the archetypal damsel in distress, gleefully disobeying her father and defiantly swashbuckling her way across the seven seas, you still get the feeling that she is biting the hand that feeds her. Fortunately, cinema has had its own revolution of late, thanks to the #metoo movement, and it is this seismic shift in attitude that knightley believes made her upcoming project, Colette, possible. “Wash Westmoreland (director and co-screenplay writer) had been trying to make it for 15 years but suddenly, just in the last 10 years, we’ve been able to talk about the women’s movement… we’ve been able to talk about feminism again in a way that we hadn’t before.”
Autumn/Winter 2018/19
27
“So, I think the fact people were ready to say: ‘Yes, we’re interested in this topic,’ was kind of an indication of where the kind of conversation was going. I mean, yes, obviously I don’t think anybody expected the #metoo movement to happen in the way that it did, and that the conversation would speed up in the way that it has, but it does feel like a very appropriate film for that. She’s cool and as a woman, and I want to see my heroes; I want to be like: ‘Ah, I feel inspired and empowered by you’, and I did. I felt like that learning about her; I felt like that playing her and I hope that people will feel like that watching her.” Regardless of political or societal beliefs, Colette is the kind of role any actress of a sane mind would be eager to get her teeth into. It tells the true story of sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, a woman in 1920s paris pushed by her husband to write under his name. Upon the success of her literature, she fights to make her talents her own, challengingly gender norms and the perceived ability of women to write, and on controversial topics such as saphism (female homosexuality) and sexual emancipation, as well as tackling broader gender norms.
Generally speaking, a career break rarely has a positive impact on a person’s career, and yet in this instance it appears to have invigorated both the actress and her audience. After all, it’s hard to forget the daily pummelling knightley took from the media during the height of her career as they relentlessly pried into her love life, criticised her acting, and made assumptions over her weight loss. Th is constant haranguing resulted in her having a nervous breakdown, which led to panic attacks so severe that at one point she didn’t leave the house for three months. “It’s the nature of the game,” she muses. “When you grow up in the business you are aware of the celebrity culture and how you are going to enjoy moments where everything seems to be beautiful, and then people will try to take you down from those highs. It’s not something you can control and so I just try to do my work and ignore what’s written about me.” These days life and career appear much more on her terms as she quietly pads around North london, far away from the glare of Hollywood, peeking her head out only to promote her latest independent film or passion project. That’s not to say her presence isn’t entirely worthy of column inches, which begs the question: Is it easy being keira knightley despite the media attention?
“I loved playing her,” says knightley. “It was such a fun and amazing opportunity. She was a real maverick, a trailblazer. She lived her life the way that she wanted to live it. She lived it unapologetically, she loved who she was, and she had experiences “I don’t have much choice, do I?” she laughs. that she wanted to happen. It was almost like she “I have a very good life, a wonderful family and had to make a hole in the world for herself and she I’ve been extraordinarily fortunate to be able to did, and I felt very tall when I was playing her.” do interesting work. I can’t ever complain and I The role looks set to represent a triumphant return will never complain.” for knightley, who after years of being in the spotlight has understandably stepped back to focus on raising on her daughter with her husband, klaxons musician James Righton, even if the londoner insists her time away wasn’t necessarily a conscious decision. “I think for a while it means you don’t have your foot all the way down on the accelerator, but I really love movies have always believed my work improves when I have life experience. When I don’t go job to job to job, and I take a step back, then come back to it, then I’m the person I want to be on set, which is the positive person, not the person who’s too tired. And I think that’s very important for me as well.” 28

steps to a
healthy winter
It’s that time of year again when the thick blankets are calling and your snug jumpers have never felt so good. You’ll also want to keep the nasty winter bugs at bay, so we’re here with some top tips on giving your immunity a helping hand in avoiding the colds and flus that are often lurking this time of year…
Give germs a run for their money with garlic Add a touch of immune-boosting magic to your diet by using garlic. Garlic has been used for centuries and is known for its protective properties. Acting as a powerful immune booster that stimulates the multiplication of infection-fighting white cells, garlic boosts natural killer-cell activity and increases the efficiency of antibody production. 42
Autumn/Winter 2018/19
Get enough snoozing time poor sleep can affect the immune system so it’s crucial that you’re getting enough shut-eye. Magnesium is known as ‘nature’s tranquiliser’ and is needed to relax our muscles and nerves, so can help you fall into a peaceful sleep. Try and include plenty of magnesium-rich foods in your diet such as, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, fish and leafy green vegetables.
Advertise with us, call 01243 430592
Avoid the sweet stuff Another way to support our immunity is to ensure that we are not overloading our systems with too many antinutrient, low-nutrient culprit foods, like sugar! It can have an inflammatory effect and feeds the yeasts and bacteria in our body, which can prolong a condition or illness.
Physical touch A rub, a hug, and a passing touch can all help to decrease the level of the stress hormone cortisol in your body. Cortisol decreases your immune response, so snuggle up to a loved one and enjoy the immune boosting properties of an embrace!
Crank up your immunity with vitamin C Keep hydrated Your immune system relies on water. The water in our body carries nutrients to your cells, carries waste and toxins away from your cells and out of your body, keeps body temperature stable, protects joints and keeps the lining of your mouth hydrated and moist, reducing susceptibility to colds. Drinking plenty of water will also help your body deliver nutrients, flush out waste and dilute mucus, helping to eliminate bacteria and viruses that can make you ill.
Remember to eat 5-8 portions of organic citrus, berry fruits, papaya, kiwi, peppers, broccoli or brussel sprouts everyday, as they are some of the richest sources of Vitamin C. Taking a vitamin C supplement is another effective way of supporting our immunity and making sure you’re getting enough of this nutrient. Vitamin C increases the body’s resistance to viruses, aids the recovery of muscles after exercise, helps with wound healing, bone strengthening and has energy giving properties.
Mix up your shower temperature Change the temperature of the water in your shower to either hot or cold every two minutes. This helps to boost your immunity by increasing two types of white blood cells called Monocytes and lymphocytes. The immune system is stimulated by your body trying to warm itself up from the cold water, while switching to hot water every now and then stimulates your body’s detoxification system. The fewer toxins we have in our body, the more your immune system is better able to deal with bacteria and viruses.
Ditch the dairy Try to avoid dairy if you want to get better quicker and stay healthy, because as comforting as that warm milky drink is, it is a mucous forming and inflammatory product. If you have too much dairy it may take longer for you to shake off that bout of sinus or flu!

breast
feeding
If you’re pregnant and planning to breastfeed, here are some useful tips to help you along your breastfeeding journey.
Get comfy
Eat healthy
some babies feed for long durations, meaning they could be glued to your breast for a good few hours. This can happen when babies go through a growth spurt. Make sure you have your feet up and supported with a pregnancy pillow - these are ideal for feeding. Get stocked up with lots of snacks, water and the remote control for that Netflix series you’ve been meaning to binge on or a good book!
Having a healthy diet after pregnancy is key for you and your baby. Breastfeeding alone is said to burn between 300 and 500 calories and can be extremely exhausting, so ensure your diet includes a mixture of protein, starchy foods, fruit and vegetables to keep your energy levels up. You don’t have to ban all sweet treats, just try not to over indulge!
Hydrate
Express your milk
Hydration is essential when breastfeeding, so ensure you drink plenty of fluids. A bottle of water with a lid is ideal when nursing your baby. stay away from drinks with a high sugar content and limit how much caffeine you have throughout the day.
Hand expressing or using a breast pump is a great way to give your breasts a rest if you are suffering from sore nipples or if you are sharing the feeding with your partner. If you are wanting to hand express, speak with your health visitor who can show you how to do it and offer advice and tips on how to store your milk. Using a pump is quicker and can be done whilst feeding. Considering how much life throws at them, it’s no wonder every woman on the planet is a strong, bold beacon of resilience and potential – even among vulnerability. It’s something British writer Angie langley wants to remind all women in her hilarious, thoughtful and ultimately empowering new novel. Jennifer Brown's Journey: A poignant life-affirming story of self-discovery. A rip-roaring, hugely-reflective novel that will have every woman cheering on with gusto.
Jennifer Brown champions the importance of self-belief, and the value of a bucket-sized glass of wine in a tight spot. The first in a series of three books, Jennifer Brown’s Journey is a story of female self-empowerment and the triumph of the human spirit in the face of challenges that many women will recognise.

Five feet one and full of fizz, Jennifer Brown lights up the room. She has a gorgeous partner, a wicked best friend, and a boss who doesn’t mind that she’s the worst typist on the planet. She’s loyal, generous and irredeemably ditzy. Everyone loves Jennifer Brown. But can she learn to love herself? Lighthearted and poignant, the story gives readers a very real sense of a woman, initially rather ditzy, maturing into a redoubtable, self-possessed individual who faces her many challenges with developing aplomb. 46

titchfield
Titchfield Festival Theatre is one of Europe’s most prolific amateur theatre companies, producing more than 25 plays in house during 2018 in three different venues including the historic Great Barn. The popular local theatre is a charity which moved to a former factory warehouse in 2010 in St Margaret’s Lane, Titchfield after the company’s home at Titchfield Abbey was lost due to the intransigence of English Heritage and increased rental fees.
sets the standard as the
UK’s greenest
theatre
Over the past two years, the theatre’s Artistic Director and Chair, kevin Fraser together with his board and volunteers have undertaken a complete renovation of the building, converting the former industrial premises into a fully-functioning, environmentally sustainable playhouse with a main theatre and studio, two bars, rehearsal space and extensive storage facilities. The results of this extensive work are now bearing fruit. Following the installation of 98kw of solar panels (360 panels in total) in 2018 on the fully refurbished and insulated roof, the theatre building generates all of its’ own electricity. In the future, any surplus electricity generated will be sold back to the national grid providing valuable additional income for the next 20 years. The theatre has a number of other environmentally efficient features, too. A 200kw bio mass boiler provides the theatre with all of the heat that it requires; now, the auditoriums, bars, rehearsal areas and dressing rooms are comfortable and warm on even the coldest winter days. This system also generates a valuable source of revenue via a government backed Renewable Heath Incentive. Recycling and reducing waste is a major priority and Titchfield is of the few theatres in the country that has an effective waste recycling policy via Fareham Borough council, dividing out all its waste and recycling it. All patrons are asked to use recycle bins for waste cups, bottles and other items. sets are also recycled and exchanged with other drama groups and companies. 50

The plans to maximise the theatre’s green credentials do not stop there, with water collected from the roof used to supply the building’s toilets and laundry facilities after filtering and screening. The objective of kevin Fraser and his team is to create a building with a zero carbon footprint – and a place where patrons will wish to come and enjoy a wide variety of different plays that provides entertainment for all ages, young and old, including shakespeare, musicals, comedy and period drama; both contemporary and traditional. Th is year, the theatre will complete their new frontage improving the entrance area to welcome an increasing number of people to the venue; so far this year, the number of ticket sales has increased by almost 15%. kevin Fraser says, “When we first arrived, members of our company and our patrons will recall the building as one which was cold, uninviting and uncomfortable. Now, thanks to the support of the Board, volunteers, our funding partners and suppliers we have a modern, environmentally friendly theatre which is without doubt one of the greenest theatres in the UK, cosy and warm with superb facilities not only for our company but for local groups too. We are hugely excited for the future growth and development of the theatre over the next few years.” FOR MORe INFORMATION, pleAse GO TO TITCHFIelDFesTIVAlTHeATRe.COM OR CONTACT keVIN FRAseR ON 01329 556156.
