benefits of
fostering Fostering is a liFestyle, not a job. The Fostering Network reports that there are ‘around 44,625’ Foster Carers in the UK. This army of loving and committed people play a very important role in our society, giving children that may have suffered neglect a loving home. The needs of the children are at the very core of everything they do, which is why most foster carers describe fostering as their lifestyle, not their job.
Fostering. We’ve all heard about it, read about it, we might even know someone that does it! But do we really know the benefits of it? wRiTTen By ruby baldry Celebrate
we can’t deny the sobering fact that the vast number of children being placed in the care system is heartbreaking. However, we can celebrate the 44,625 families that welcome children from incredibly diverse backgrounds into their homes, hearts and lives. as well as recognise the enormous benefit of fostering.
It’s rewarding We spoke to Portsmouth Foster Parent, Emma. emma and her husband have fostered children since 2010, and in that time have welcomed over thirty children into their home. emma tells us that “Loving and caring for someone is very rewarding and all children need a secure family base. We get to be the people that love and champion them, which is incredible opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life”.
It’s worth it Like any parenting, there are moments of difficulty. Perhaps a little more so, given the diverse backgrounds of some of the children in care. “Some of the children that come into care have suffered great losses and many have had difficult 10
Summer/Autumn 2018
home lives, but being able to support those children is something that is absolutely life changing and makes it worth it.”
It has positive results emma speaks fondly about the benefits fostering has for the child. “We’ve celebrated babies take their first steps and seen young people successfully move into independence. We’ve helped children who have had issues with speech, bed wetting and night terrors. Fostering gives an opportunity to help improve those issues and work alongside them towards their goals.”
It’s recommended are you considering fostering? “A lot of people are put off fostering, often saying ‘I couldn't do it because I wouldn't be able to give them back. I’d fall too in love’. But they are the people I always want to encourage to pursue it. A child needs someone who is not willing to give up on them, and who will risk falling in love with them to give them the best care possible.”
Foster carers are in a child’s life for a ‘season’, which may be one night or many years. But what’s clear is the time spent nurturing that child will have an enormous benefit on their wellbeing and future.

according to the Diabetes and wellness Foundation, there are currently 3.8 million people with diabetes in the uk and it is estimated that a further 500,000 adults have the disease but don’t know it. in addition, for every 10 people that have diabetes, 90% have Type 2, which in many cases can be prevented. it’s important to say that none of these individual signs mean you definitely have high blood sugar, but they are indications that it’s worth seeing your doctor.
signs you could have
wRiTTen By cassandra barns
Feeling tired of course, feeling tired can have many causes, but it can be an indication that your body is not efficiently taking glucose (sugar) into your cells to use for energy, meaning your blood sugar stays high.
Feeling unusually thirsty when your blood sugar levels are high, water is pulled out of your cells into your bloodstream to dilute the sugar. So you may feel very thirsty even if you’re drinking plenty of water… and may have to pee a lot.
Feeling very hungry – even if you’ve just eaten just like tiredness signals, you’ll get hunger signals if glucose is staying in the blood and not being taken into your cells. your body thinks it’s because you haven’t eaten!
A ‘spare tyre’ weight gain around the abdomen is an indication that your blood sugar levels could be high and is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes.
Thrush High blood sugar levels can change the bacterial balance in vaginal fluids and encourage the growth of candida, leading to thrush. 12

holiday packing wRiTTen By emma roberts
Check ahead Find out what your hotel provides. even the very basic of hotels will at least provide towels and a hairdryer. These bulky items take up a lot of room especially in a cabin sized suitcase. avoid packing unnecessary items and use this space for other essentials. 14
Summer/Autumn 2018
Think ahead about the type of holiday you’re going to have and the footwear required. Save space by packing socks and underwear or any other small items into your shoes. it might be worth wrapping them in a plastic bag to keep them fresh!
Rolling consider rolling your clothing. you’d be surprised how much more you can fi t into your suitcase, and if you’re lucky, you won’t need to iron them when you get to the other side. items like heavy trousers can be laid fl at at the bottom or across the top. Place solid or fragile items inbetween rolled items and squeeze in the extra little bits when you’re full.
The horror stories of leaking toiletries are endless. avoid this completely by making sure you wrap all leakable objects, including sun tan lotions, shower gels and hair products in a plastic carrier bag or other effective waterproof protection. it’s more effective to wrap each product individually so that you can place them in the gaps instead of placing them altogether in one bulk.
Avoid extra costs it’s hard to keep track on the weight of your case. you could get to the airport and be greeted with an extra charge for overweight luggage if you’re not careful. To avoid this embarrassing and expensive situation, invest in some luggage scales. you can pick these up quite cheaply and use them over and over again. it might even be worth packing them for the return journey after filling up on gifts and holiday purchases. it pays to be prepared.

colman
Playing the monarch would be a daunting task for anyone, but surely BAFTA-winning actress Olivia Colman is better equipped to pull off the required amount of pomp and posterity? As she prepares to take on The Crown, the talented star reveals her hopes and fears at undertaking the most high-profile of high society roles.

when it was announced that olivia colman would be stepping into claire Foy’s bespoke heels to play Her Majesty in the third series of The Crown, there was an audible sigh of relief that emanated from the corridors of Buckingham Palace… probably. and if there wasn’t, there should have been. after all, colman is already royalty in her own right as the established queen of primetime drama, thanks to stunning turns in award-winning shows Broadchurch and The Night Manager. it therefore made perfect sense for her to ascend to surely the greatest role of her career, in the netflix-produced series.
“Claire is an absolute genius and an incredibly hard act to follow, but I will give it my all.”
while her very British face, her very cool but entirely likeable demeanour, and measured, clipped accent reveal that, yes, there is certainly something very regal about the cambridge-educated star, colman reveals there is much work to be done in perfecting her portrayal. “They’re giving me a great voice coach who will make sure I speak like the Queen,” she begins, “so I’ll just learn the lines and try to copy exactly what they do. Plus, Claire Foy has let me know I can call if I need to, so I’ve got support coming from all quarters!”
Taking on the role of a living icon is fraught with a variety of hazards, particularly when it also means succeeding an actress who won a golden globe for her interpretation of the character. it has left even the seemingly unfl appable colman in something of a spin. “I got a phone call from my agent when I was in a car to tell me I had been asked to meet with director Peter Morgan,” she says. “I think I had fairly recently finished watching the first series – all in about three nights fl at – and so I was very excited. My agent was trying to be subtle, not knowing who was in the car with me… ‘It’s something about a tiara,’, and I went, ‘Oh, it’s The crown!’; I just couldn’t hold it back. “I’m so thrilled to be part of it. Claire is an absolute genius and an incredibly hard act to follow, but I will give it my all.” Picking up from where Foy left off, the third and fourth series will span the years 1964-76.
and though very little has been revealed by show-runner Peter Morgan, the timeline tells us that colman’s storylines will involve Queen elizabeth ii cultivating a fi rm bond with Prime Minister of the period Harold wilson, plus the decolonisation of africa and the caribbean. Th ere’s also the birth of Prince edward (March 1964), then charles’s coronation as Prince of wales and subsequent move into the public eye. it’s also thought we may see the fi rst appearance camilla Parker-Bowles. with the cast only beginning filming in july, there will still be a short wait until series three hits our laptops, which means months of speculation and awkward red carpet moments, with colman and peers artfully dodging spoiler-seeking interviewers. But the actress is a dab hand at keeping secrets, having revealed previously that during filming of the second series of Broadchurch she was so terrified that someone might get hold of the scripts that she’d burn a few pages every time she lit a fire.

“I love what I do but I only feel like I am just getting going and I never want to get above myself.”
For colman takes her work very seriously, and with tremendous results too, having achieved three Baftas, one golden globe and three BiFa awards, as well as two emmy nominations. yet she is not one to treat herself with the same brevity as others in the spotlight, and draws a very clear line between the notion of an artist and a celebrity, visibly recoiling at the suggestion she is a national treasure. “It’s my job and that’s about it. It’s roleplay and a bit of dramatic licence thrown in. I love what I do but I only feel like I am just getting going and I never want to get above myself.” colman also fiercely protects the privacy of her family – husband of 17 years ed Sinclair and their two sons – revealing that while her work is a vital part of her being, she would never accept a role that would greatly jeopardise their homelife. “I don’t like being away from my children it’s as simple as that. As long as I have Ed and the boys, everything is all right.” Having made waves in very serious dramas 18
Summer/Autumn 2018
on both television and film – The Lobster, Tyrannosaur and The Iron Lady to name a few – it’s easy to forget that the delightful 44-year-old is also magnificent as a comedy actress, as perfectly illustrated in her early collaborations with long-time friends David Mitchell and Robert webb, particularly Peep Show. But try as she might to maintain an even keel between deadly serious and hilariously funny, colman genuinely fears that audiences may tire of her emotional outbursts onscreen. “I still worry that people may get fed up with my weepy portrayals of some characters. I do tend to cry a lot on screen and I hope people can see past that! I’m very emotional and can’t help it sometimes, even when it doesn’t suit the character! But I’m working on that side…!” she laughs. as it’s difficult to imagine Her Majesty emptying out a box of kleenex in one sitting, we can safely assume that colman’s career will continue its unstoppable trajectory. and when she is ready to take up her rightful mantle as a national treasure, it will be there waiting, tears or otherwise.

flowers wRiTTen By hannah van-der-linden
They’re not only feast for the eyes, they’re a tantalising treat for the taste buds too, edible flowers taste divine in a light sponge cake or sprinkled on a refreshing salad, adding vibrant colours and distinctive flavours to sweet and savoury dishes.
honeysuckle
Reminiscent of bees diving headfirst to collect the sweet nectar. The flowers of the honeysuckle can be used to make a gooey syrup or a cooling sorbet. Perfect for hot Summer days. hibiscus
The hibiscus flower is tart with a hint of cranberry and a popular addition in hot and cold drinks. Think refreshing juices, cocktails and herbal teas. For those with a sweet tooth, the flower works perfectly in a light sponge accompanied with lemon – a tangy alternative to the classic lemon drizzle! lavender
Lavender has a floral aroma and is commonly used in herbal remedies as a relaxant. The flower is part of the mint family and a popular ingredient in food. Plum and berry jams use lavender essence to intensify the flavour of the fruit and it’s also popular in shortbread and biscuits. 20

rose Petals
Rose petals have been used for many years in cooking. Sweet in taste, they can be eaten straight from a bush, as long as they have not been doused in pesticides. The petals are used to adorn cakes with their bright show stopping colours; think fusicia, scarlet and crimson. Rose water is a popular drink that claims to help reduce the signs of ageing and dried rose petals are a great accompaniment in tea and add a sweet flavour in jams and syrups. next time you visit a garden centre, why not choose a selection of edible flowers to grow, giving your dishes the wow factor.

gardening The UK’s gardeners are making the most of the weather to spend time outdoors, but you should also be looking to the seasons ahead and begin preparing your garden for the colder spell. There are plenty of jobs to keep you busy in the garden; it’s the perfect time of year to plant your winter vegetables and start cutting back and deadheading flowers to encourage continual healthy growth. 26

Lop back your lavender as with many blooms, it’s important to cut back lavender after its flowering period to promote new growth. Make sure you do so lightly to help maintain the plant’s well-rounded shape. you should be pruning around one third of the plant using a sharp, clean set of pruning shears.
Deadhead petunia and potted dahlias Deadheading ensures that plants maintain a healthy continual bloom and august is the ideal month to trim back potted petunias and dahlias. Plants such as dahlias have tough and stringy stems so opt for secateurs, scissors or knives when removing the flower heads.
Safeguard tomato plants Wind down for winter Remove the lower level leaves from your tomato plant to help reduce its risk of disease and keep it thriving for longer. when a tomato plant’s growth is dense or when the leaves lie too close to the ground this can mean that the leaves are permanently in the shade. By removing the lower leaves the remaining have more space and access to sunlight and so are more likely to stay drier and free from soil containing pathogens, protecting them from disease.
Plant your hardy vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and Brussel sprouts, so they’re ready to be harvested throughout the winter months. Make sure you plant in an open site with free-draining soil and cultivate before planting to ensure these vegetables have the best chance of growing. Prune your perennial herbs whether you’re looking to flavour your meat or garnish your cocktails, herbs are the plant of the moment and a fantastic addition to gardens of all sizes. oregano and thyme are perennial herbs which mean they grow back each year without needing to be replanted. To promote their growth each year, trim them in august before the winter months hit to ensure they withstand the frost.
Plan ahead for gardening leave it’s important not to leave your plants neglected while you are on holiday. a great way to make sure your plants are being watered without asking the neighbours is to invest in a growbag waterer. once set up, you can control the amount and frequency of water needed for your plants, leaving them perfectly hydrated without becoming waterlogged.

Start by infusing the milk. Place the milk in a really clean medium size saucepan. Pick the basil and mint leaves and place to one side. Take basil and mint stalks, gently bruise and add to the pan of milk. Place the pan on hob on a low heat. Using a peeler take two good strips of lemon peel and add to the milk. Gently heat the milk for a few minutes until just steaming then remove the pan from the heat, take out the lemon peel and place to one side. Meanwhile place the basil and mint leaves in a food processor and whiz up to a fine sand with the 150g caster sugar. Place the egg yolks into a mixing bowl and whisk well. Measure out 40g of the sugar and place to one side. Add the rest of the sugar to the egg yolks and whisk well until light and fluffy. Remove the herb stalks from the pan of milk and return the milk to a low heat. When the milk is steaming again but not boiling, slowly whisk the milk into the yolks. Quickly clean out the pan and return the custard to the pan on a slow heat, stir continuously until it lightly coats the back of the spoon. Pour the custard into a bowl and whisk over a bowl of ice to cool quickly. Lightly whip the cream to very soft peaks, fold into the custard and churn in an ice cream machine until ready to freeze (takes about an hour). Prep time – 15 mins Cooking time – 20 mins plus churning and chilling overnight if needed ingredients Serves 6-8 • 500ml whole milk • 20g fresh sprigs basil • 20g fresh sprigs mint • 1 lemon • 250g egg yolks • 150g caster sugar • 400ml double cream

Once the ice cream is churned ripple in some of the strawberries and fold in dots of lemon curd. Transfer to a freezer proof container and freeze until set. To serve scoop out balls of ice cream serve with the remaining strawberries on top and a sprinkle of the remaining basil and mint sugar.

Niçoise Fish is in fashion this summer so why not take a look back to the old, but timeless classic salads like the French nicoise. chunky Tuna, olives and sliced boiled eggs!
Spinach & Strawberry we all love a good British strawberry! not just for your standard fruit salad. a sweet and tangy alternative to your salad this summer!
Salmon & Asparagus Perfect for the summer season. Quick to cook poached salmon is ideal along side crunchy asparagus. combined with a leafy salad drizzled with a hollandaise dressing.
Chicken & Mushroom a combination of large fl at mushrooms and grey oyster mushrooms cooked in worcestershire sauce. Topped with chargrilled British chicken breast fillets, pea shoots and rocket. Healthy and filling!
Somerset Apple & Brie Really simple and you can probably use up the last bits and bobs from the fridge. celery, pea shoots and salad leaves are topped with gooey brie and succulent apples. Make the dressing by combining apple juice, oil, brown sugar and lemon zest and enjoy.
Fennel, Avocado & Orange citric infusion of crunchy fennel and juicy orange, contrasted with smooth avocado.
Caesar Possibly the most famous among its kind, the caesar salad is a favourite among diners. Throw in a touch of chilli and garlic and coat with caesar sauce, there’s nothing quite like it!
Grilled Peach & Mozzarella grilled peach…in a salad… yes my green friends! juicy and sweet peach mixed with cheesy mozzarella, this salad is a delight.

want to grow your own raspberries? Top varieties for early summer harvests are glen Lyon, glen Magna and glen Prosen. Raspberries thrive in fertile, slightly acidic soils, which are well-drained and weed free. They dislike soggy, shallow and chalky soils.
and for those wanting to grow their own blackcurrants, we prefer Big Ben and Ben connan varieties for their large fruits, very high yields, sweet flavour and disease resistance tendencies. Blackcurrants are perfect for sorbet due to their intense flavour and ability to freeze well.

a vibrant season of events planned for

farmers’ markets Taking place every third Sunday of the month in Southsea, around 20 producers bring their food and drink to shoppers on Palmerston Road. just some of the regulars include the award-winning ambrose Sausages, Hoxton Bakehouse, catch Fabulous Fish cakes and one of the county’s best-known gin distilleries winchester Distillery. However Southsea isn’t the only town on the coast to hosts a market every third Saturday. St Peter’s Square in emsworth is always buzzing with activity when the market is taking place. Here you can find everything from sweet treats by cupcakes mmm cookies to delicious honey by Mrs B’s Bees. at Petersfield’s market, based in The Square on the first Sunday of each month, shoppers can meet one of Hampshire Farmers’ Market’s newest members Beau Farm. Their 50 goats graze at their farm in the north of the county and they produce the freshest milk and range of cheeses including ricotta and gouda. Like all HFM members, Beau Farm met the criteria to be able to bring their wonderful produce to market. They source at least 20 per cent of their ingredients from Hampshire or within a 20-mile radius. any produce that is grown, reared or raised must spend at least 50% of its time with the producer. voted Best Farmers’ Market by the Guardian Food Magazine, winchester’s market is the largest in the country. Twice a month stalls line the High Street selling the best seasonal food and drink plus hot food to go, including buffalo burgers, flatbreads and bacon rolls. Many shoppers arrive as early as 9am to stock up on meats from winchester’s Beechcroft Farm, a few bottles of ale from nearby MaSH Brewery and game from gisby’s game, just down the road in alresford. 42

born
free Forget the neighbour’s dogs and cats - some of the world’s most dangerous wild animals are living at private addresses across the country. From deadly snakes and crocodiles, to lions, leopards, bears and even an elephant - Born Free reveals that nearly 5,000 dangerous wild animals are being privately kept right here in Britain. a survey conducted by the Born Free Foundation has revealed that 4,798 dangerous wild animals are being privately kept in great Britain. now the international wildlife charity is petitioning the uk government to immediately review the law, and put a stop to some of the world’s most remarkable but often deadly creatures being in kept in unsuitable environments. whilst an estimated 11 million people own a pet in the uk, Born Free’s research revealed that among the 24 dangerous wild animals that reside in the area, there are at least: four crocodiles 44

including Dwarf caimans and Spectacled caimans, one Savannah cat, one gila Monster Lizard, seven monkeys including Black capped capuchin Monkeys, yellow Breasted capuchins and weeper capuchins, two Short clawed otters and nine snakes among them albino western Diamondback Rattlesnakes, copperhead vipers and Mozambique Spitting cobras. Shockingly, the entire survey revealed that a total of 218 private addresses are hosting dangerous wild animals across Britain. These include: at least 250 wild cats, such as servals and lynx and including 50 big cats - lions, tigers, leopards, pumas and cheetahs; over 100 venomous lizards, such as Mexican beaded lizards and gila monsters; at least 240 primates, particularly ring tailed

lemurs and capuchins; over 85 crocodilians, mostly caimans; and at least 650 venomous snakes, including puff adders, black mambas and diamondback rattlesnakes.
They included cobras and copperhead vipers. Seven other snakes were found dead in the house as a result of the poor conditions in which they had been kept.
in wales, there is an elephant licensed to be privately kept, and in england a giraffe, as well as 14 wolves, 3 bears, 13 leopards, three cheetahs, nine lions and nine tigers. other species being kept as pets or in private collections in the uk included zebras, camels, fossas, antelope, and otters.
whilst the survey includes those establishments and companies that require a Dangerous wild animals licence to rescue animals, for animals such as wild boar and ostriches on farms, and those who use animals for Tv and film, it is still understood that a large proportion of the dangerous wild animals are being kept as personal pets.
currently, under the Dangerous wild animals act of 1976, anyone in Britain can keep a dangerous wild animal as long as they obtain a licence from their local authority. The licence application merely requires them to demonstrate that their animals are properly contained and not at risk of escape. Born Free is calling for a review of the legislation covering the keeping of wild animals as pets, including the Dangerous wild animals act 1976, and calling for more restrictions on the ownership of dangerous wild animals. This includes the need for consideration of large constrictor snakes, which do not currently require a licence to be kept. Moreover, it is thought that many more wild animals are being kept unlicensed and illegally across the country. confining wild animals in domestic settings is not only cruel says Born Free, but can also pose a significant risk to human life.
Dr chris Draper, Head of animal welfare and captivity for Born Free, said; “The keeping of wild animals as pets is a growing concern. The widespread use of the internet has made it easier than ever to ‘order’ or purchase a wild animal without clarification as to where it has come from or how it should be cared for. Wild animals are particularly vulnerable to welfare problems because of their complex social, physical and behavioural needs. They require specific housing conditions, dietary requirements, and furthermore, the safety risk these animals pose to their owners and the wider public should not be ignored.” To FinD ouT wHaT DangeRouS aniMaLS aRe Living in oTHeR counTieS acRoSS THe uk you can uSe BoRn FRee’S inTeRacTive MaP on THeiR weBSiTe - www.BoRnFRee.oRg.uk/DwaMaP To Sign BoRn FRee’S PeTiTion FoR goveRnMenT To Review THe DangeRouS wiLD aniMaLS acT oF 1976 PLeaSe viSiT www.PeTiTion.PaRLiaMenT.uk/PeTiTionS/221050

Summer/Autumn 2018
it’s clear that our caffeine levels are creeping up and up. whether it’s a latte on the way to work or an espresso to get through the afternoon slump, coffee has become a routine pick-me-up for millions of Brits. However, there are growing concerns about the number of us who are addicted to caffeine and consume cup after cup of the black stuff on a daily basis. in a recent study, more than a third of those surveyed said they had to start the day with a cup. But should it be limited? There is caffeine in tea, chocolate and fizzy drinks as well as coffee, so our daily allowance can quickly add up. The increasingly large coffees offered in high street coffee chains and the surge in popularity of ‘energy drinks’ doesn’t help either.

How much are you consuming daily? Lets look at the health implications in detail – is caffeine all bad…?! Here are five reasons to quit caffeine…and five reasons not to! it can be bad For your heart Some studies show it can reduce blood flow in your coronary arteries when you need it most – during exercise – as well as cause palpitations or irregular heartbeat and may possibly increase your blood pressure over time. it disturbs your sleeP People who drink more than three cups of coffee per day are scientifically proven to have less than restful sleep. one study showed a difference of 79 minutes sleep between drinkers of caffeinated vs decaffeinated drinks. if you struggle to get to sleep then caffeine should definitely be a no-go. it takes about five hours to clear from our system – so drinking coffee after lunch-time is worth avoiding. it’s oFten linked with sugar even if we don’t add sugar to our coffee, we are often tempted to accompany it with a biscuit, cake or a breakfast muffin – particularly when encouraged to do so by high street chains. in addition there can be 11 teaspoons of sugar in some varieties of coffee – our total recommended daily intake. The calorie count of these specialist coffees can be huge too so not good if you are watching your weight. it’s bad For your mood caffeine increases catecholamines such as adrenaline – known as the “fight or fl ight” hormone. no surprise then that caffeine can make you tense and jittery in high quantities. it can imPact your Fertility Drinking more than fi ve cups of coffee a day – the equivalent of about 500mg of caffeine – is linked with lower fertility. if you’re trying to get pregnant, it’s certainly worth cutting down, and once you are pregnant you’ll want to quit caffeine altogether or certainly cut back to less than 200mg per day as it may increase the risk of birth defects or reduce fetal growth.
However, on the plus side… it can imProve sPorts PerFormance Drinking a caffeinated drink before sport is associated with improved endurance and other sporting measures. it seems that caffeine increases heart rate but reduces the pain felt during exertion, encouraging us to push it that bit further. it can increase mental alertness Studies performed on people in stressful conditions showed improved concentration, learning and reaction time after 200mg caffeine. in addition, there is some evidence that it can delay onset of alzheimer’s disease. it may reduce the risk oF some diseases Drinking coffee is associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes. it’s also associated with a reduced risk of some types of cancer. coffee adds high levels of antioxidants to our diet (up to 64% in one study). antioxidants protect us against various diseases, which may explain some of these benefits. it may Protect the liver Fatty liver disease is becoming an increasing problem due to the combination of alcohol and obesity. excess fat in the liver can cause infl ammation and lead to cirrhosis. Some studies show that caffeine intake may be associated with a lower risk of fatty liver. caFFeine cheers us uP even just the smell of coffee can make us feel better and drinking it too is related to lower rates of depression.not to mention the social element of relaxing with friends over a cuppa.
So, what do we do? it seems that going cold-turkey on caffeine is not necessary – and we may even be worse off. instead, we just need to be aware of how much we drink and avoid replacing caffeine with sugary drinks!
