the benefits of a healthy
breakfast
WrITTeN by daiSy FLood
Breakfast provides many benefits for our wellbeing and health, it’s what gives the brain the fuel it needs after an overnight fast and that’s exactly where the term comes from ‘break’ ‘fast’, clever!
Did you ever wonder why we often hear “breakfast is the most important meal of the day?” Apart from providing a boost of energy for the day ahead, breakfast foods are a good source of nutrients particularly calcium, iron, vitamins, protein and fibre. If these are missed at breakfast they’re less likely to be compensated for later in the day. The basics of a healthy breakfast are whole grains, lean protein, low fat dairy, fruit and vegetables. Together these provide complex carbohydrates that leave you fuller for longer.
“BREAKFAST LIKE A KING, breakfast can be good for your waistline too, LUNCH LIKE A PRINCE, research shows those who eat breakfast are AND DINE LIKE A PAUPER” less likely to be overweight compared to those who skip breakfast and they’re more likely to reach for high sugar and fatty snacks mid-morning. In the long term a healthy breakfast can improve your health, the NhS says; “It can reduce obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes”. These benefits are ideal in todays society with ever increasing obesity within adults and more shockingly children as young as 10

two. The NhS are now having to fork out for weekly weigh in’s inhibiting those who are in real need of attention from health care. Not only is breakfast good for energy it’s been proven that eating breakfast can improve memory and concentration levels. breakfast foods restore glucose levels, an essential carbohydrate needed for the brain to function. According to a study published in the journal, students who participated in breakfast programs had significantly higher scores in maths than those who skipped or rarely took breakfast. breakfast provides you with more strength and endurance to engage in physical activities, which can also have a significant effect on kids at school, not only for their health but their social skills too! breakfast has been linked to improving grades as well as attainment and behaviour. So, wake up, smell the coffee and enjoy a hearty breakfast fit for a king, and maybe you’ll feel like one, until lunch time anyway!

you’ve found the mortgage you want so the next stage is to scour the banks, building societies and independent advisers to get a good rate. Most banks are on trend with creating online tools to give you an idea of what you can borrow with mortgage calculators based on your annual salary. When it comes to securing the mortgage it’s not just banks that have the best deals, independent advisers can offer exclusive rates that you won’t find on the high street. however, this does come at a cost so it’s up to you if you want to pay a bit more for a great rate.
rightmove, Zoopla and Primelocation are good sites to start looking as well as the local estate agents that may just advertise independently. rightmove has a handy app that allows you to search for a home listing the nearby schools. Ideal if you have a family or planning for one in the future. Primelocation offers similar information, but also give details of the neighbours, crime incidents, school performance and council tax bands. All key facts to consider when buying.
buildings and contents insurance is a must and needs to be in place for the exchange of contracts to go take place. Compare The Market, moneysupermarket and confused.com are all great sites to get the best insurance.
Your perfect home
Once the offer has been accepted a solicitor needs to be instructed to carry out the legal requirements of the property. A surveyor will then check the property is in order and will advise if there is anything that needs to be finalised for the house sale to go through.
When the mortgage is sorted, finding the right house is top priority. you may have found your perfect pad or still searching, but it’s key that your mortgage is in place and ready to go, which will make the buying process a lot quicker.
Make it legal
Party time Once everything has been agreed, the exchange of contracts will take place where the buyers deposit is released to the solicitor and finally a date for completion is decided. That date is when the money will be put in place. Keys are then handed over and then it’s time to open a bottle of champers to celebrate the purchase of your new home.

Where would you be without your
eyes?
Our eyesight is an incredible gift, but it’s often taken for granted. When it starts to deteriorate many people suffer in silence rather than seeking help.
Anne Gill has been a qualified optician for over 30 years and has seen this avoidance behaviour many times. “For some it’s vanity, they don’t like the idea of wearing glasses and are uncomfortable with the idea of contact lenses. Others see it as an admission of aging and prefer to put up with headaches, irritated eyes or declining vision rather than visit an optician.”
It’s not just aging that causes eye problems eye strain, blurred vision and red eyes are increasingly common among those who work in front of a computer screen all day. These symptoms can be prevented with a pair of prescription computer glasses. Dry eyes are another common complaint of patients who visit Anne’s practice in. “Our TearLab™ dry eye clinic is the only one in the area, giving us the ability to diagnose and treat this painful condition locally.”

all about the
base
WrITTeN by Sara niVen SMitH
Foundations, primers, concealers - there’s never been a bigger or better choice and the right products can work wonders as our beauty editor, Sara Niven Smith, explains. Lipstick, eye-shadow and blusher are great for adding colour and enhancing features but the right base is essential. With imperfections covered, areas of redness disguised and under eye shadows erased you can even do away with other products and still look reasonably presentable. (We’ve all wised up to the fact that when models tout the ‘natural’ look it often involves an hour in make up; in reality for most of us it’s more likely to scare off the postman!)
Primers may sound a lot of faff but for anyone over 30 in particular they are great for everything from brightening up sallow skin and correcting redness to helping make up glide on smoothly, particularly for drier skin. DhC’s velvet Skin Coat falls into the latter category while Clarins’ Instant Light radiance boosting Complexion base and benefi t Cosmetic’s That Gal both pep up tired complexions and can be worn without foundation for the brave, lucky or young!
you can get away with cheap mascaras and lip glosses but I’m a firm believer that good quality foundations, primers and concealers are worth paying out for. Pricier brands tend to come with advantages like a wider choice of shades as well as other benefi ts including longer lasting coverage and skin care benefi ts.
My current favourite foundations for great coverage with a natural finish are estee Lauder’s The Perfectionist youth Infusing Make Up, £37, bobbi brown’s Intensive Skin Serum Foundation, £39 and Clinique’s new beyond Perfecting Foundation Concealer, £25 (as the name suggests this does the job of both depending on how much you use and where). Apply your preference with clean fingers, a small make up sponge or do what the professionals do and invest in a proper foundation brush!
With decent products a little goes a long way too so your investment should last many months. Crème de la Mer’s radiance Concealer at £48 is admittedly a pretty steep outlay for a concealer but having tried it I’m an instant fan. you only need a small dab to do away with under eye shadows or patches of redness – an instant lifesaver after a few two many the day before or a sleepless night. Clarins’ Instant Concealer is another recommendation at a slightly more pocket friendly £21.50. 24

fitness keeping motivated for
WrITTeN by Fiona Stanton
Set goals Whether you want to lose a few pounds, tone up or get fit, it’s important to set goals that you can achieve. Many of us try a fitness regime for a while but then give up and slouch on the sofa instead. If you’re a little rusty when it comes to exercise maybe just start off with a brisk ten minute walk three times a week. Once you’re comfortable with that try a longer walk, or if you’re really enjoying that, try a gentle jog. It’s important to set goals that are realistic to you.
Enjoy it None of us want to slog it out at the gym while our friends are at the pub, so why not ask someone to come running with you? Sharing the experience with a friend increases motivation, and you’ll find yourselves pushing one another towards the goal. 26
Spring/Summer 2015
It’s the little things that count Whether it’s taking the stairs instead of the lift, or walking/cycling to work instead of driving, it all helps. To encourage employees to keep fit many employers provide a cycle to work scheme. If you’re planning on cycling to work the majority of the time you can get a discount on your bike. If your work isn’t part of this scheme many cycle shops are. While at your desk try following the simple desk exercises on www.fitness.wikia.com, or try sit-ups at home in front of the telly. It’s important to make exercise part of your daily routine; it will help reduce stress too.
Try something new If you’re already quite sporty and you’re getting bored of the same routine, spice things up with a new sport like netball, football or tennis. Taking up a new sport, activity or class can be loads of fun, and you’ll burn more calories than an hour on the cross-trainer in no time. It’s essential that we keep ourselves motivated and exercise regularly. It’s good for body and mind, and getting away from your daily routine by escaping in a workout will help you feel happier. Setting realistic goals will ensure you don’t give up.

british street
food
The best street food show in the world just got better. The british Street Food Festival 2015 heads nationwide with food, drink, live music and more…
The finest traders in Britain (and beyond) have been cooking up a storm to win the British Street Food Awards since 2010, but this year they’re being joined by live music curated by Universal Music, street food crazy golf, live reviews of the food pages from some of the best journalists in the country and the world’s first aroma DJ – at the British Street Food Festival. The british Street Food Festival will be setting up shop in some of the country’s most perfect ‘found’ places – starting with a Norman castle in Oxford on 1-4 May. Whether it’s under a circus tent in Cardiff, by a barge of fireworks on the docks in Leeds or a mystery location on the Cornish coast, they will all be spectacular parties, with food and live music at their heart. 28

each location will be fed by the best street food traders from britain and beyond, competing for the british Street Food Awards. The public will be able to buy sharing plates from each of them, and then vote for their favourites on the british Street Food app. Winners of the vote – plus a few wild cards — will then go through to compete for a life-changing prize at the finals in London this September. entry tickets to the british Street Food Festival will entitle the public to a free pint of Cornish Pilsner or Doom bar cask ale from Sharp’s, plus live music and DJs curated by festival partners Universal Music. New artists from Universal Music’s family of labels will be performing alongside the brightest local talent with a little help from Spinnup, the music distribution service for unsigned artists. british Street Food founder richard Johnson says, “Everything about this year is a step up. The music will fold around everything that we’re trying to do. There’s new holes on the street food crazy golf, and the entertainment – from a beer/food matching experience to a high-end food quiz – will blow your mind.”
2015 is proving an exciting year for british Street Food, as they continue to grow the movement. They’re franchising street food brands for London’s euston Station — opening this spring — as well as running the world’s first street food mall at Leeds’ Trinity Kitchen, driving a street food roadshow across Scotland and the North of england with british Land and – later this year – taking over the country’s pub kitchens.
This year’s dates & locations: CeNTrAL AND eAST heAT: oxFord — 1–4 May WALeS AND The WeST heAT: CardiFF — 5–7 June SCOTLAND AND The NOrTh heAT: LeedS — 12–14 Kune SOUTh heAT: CornwaLL — 28–31 auguSt The FINAL: London — 25–27 SepteMber
but the british Street Food Awards is the foundation of everything they do. It’s where they get to showcase exciting new talent. And parade the best of the OGs. So, as well as new kids (like The Cake Doctor, who bakes and decorates his sponges in an ambulance, and a man who makes pizza – on a bike) expect the very best from previous years. Including overall winners of british Street Food Awards 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 who are back to try and regain the crown!

“Our aim is to give our lovely guests a much more relaxed environment where they can enjoy our fabulous French food” your gunwharf restaurant has been redeveloped, what exciting changes can we expect to experience?
Our aim is to give our lovely guests a much more relaxed environment where they can enjoy our fabulous French food. We’ve taken away the table cloths and the waiters’ waistcoats, taken away the formality and created a much more welcoming feeling so you can be comfortable just popping in for a coffee or breakfast as well as lunch or dinner. We’re aiming for, as the French would say, a feeling of ‘chez nous’ – the idea that guests are ‘coming over to ours’ to somewhere they can really feel at home – no standing on ceremony. We are now open for breakfast every day and this is proving really popular – so much nicer a place to wake up with a morning coffee than a chaotic coffee shop – we also do a fantastic full English breakfast, as a Frenchman I can recommend it!
you've trained or employed many well known chefs such as Heston blumenthal and Marco pierre white, how does it feel to see your hard work in their great achievements?
I am well known for having trained many of the UK’s Michelin starred chefs, and it’s rewarding for me to see such a great number come up through the ranks at Le Manoir – some of the young chefs are so exciting – people like Ollie Dabbous who runs Dabbous up in Fitzrovia are so hardworking, so inspirational I really admire these young guys. back in 2013 you worked with boris Johnson to publicise a scheme to get young people into the food and hospitality industry, why is this such an important focus for you?

Using a slotted spoon, remove the blanched shells and refresh them in the iced water. Once cooled, blitz the iced water and blanched pea pods in a food processor until smooth and strain through a fine sieve. Set aside 100ml to make the pea purée and the remaining 500ml to make the risotto.
Pea purée In a small saucepan on a medium heat, sweat the peas in the butter for 5 minutes, adding a pinch of salt. Add the 100ml of reserved pea stock, bring to a boil and simmer for 4 minutes. Transfer to a blender or food processor, blend until smooth and leave to cool.
Risotto In a medium saucepan on a low heat, sweat the onion in the olive oil with a pinch of salt for 2 minutes, until translucent. Add the garlic. Stir in the rice and continue to cook on a low heat for 3 minutes, until the grains of rice appear shiny (this will give flavour and prevent them sticking together). Pour in the white wine, then the 500ml of reserved pea stock, stir and bring to the

gentlest simmer with only one bubble breaking the surface every minute. Season with salt and pepper then cover with a lid and leave to cook for 20 minutes. Check every now and again that it is not boiling. After 20 minutes of cooking, pick up a grain of rice. you will see a tiny speck of white starch in the middle – this means the risotto is nearly cooked. Now you need to add the creaminess that we love so much in a risotto and that means 5 minutes of hard and fast stirring. by beating the rice, each grain will rub against another, which will extract the starch and give the rice its beautifully creamy consistency. Stir in 200ml of the cooled pea purée, which will revive the colour and add freshness. Stir in the Parmesan, taste and correct the seasoning. Set aside.
Vegetables In a small saucepan on a high heat, bring the butter, 50ml of water and a pinch of salt to the boil. Add the courgettes, cover with a lid and cook on a high heat for 30 seconds, then add the peas, radishes, radish tops and spinach, cover again and continue for 20 seconds. To finish the risotto, stir in the lemon juice, olive oil or butter and maybe a dash of white wine to sharpen the flavour. Taste and adjust the seasoning. you can serve the risotto in a large dish topped with the vegetables, blanched pea shoots and a few shavings of Parmesan, if using, or in four large bowls.

It’s great that bright jeans and trousers are appearing in the shops. They make a great alternative to leggings and tights for the summer and add some cheer to your wardrobe. How you wear them is the difference between looking like a neon disaster and someone who is chic and stylish. Here are some helpful tips from expert on how to get the look…
1 2
Forget combining trousers and a top in the exact same colour. yes, you can pick up a trim or accent, but head to toe fuschia is way too much for anyone.

If you want to combine two brights, use ‘complementary’ colours. It’s not all black and white! This means combining opposites on the colour wheel of red/ green, blue/orange and yellow/purple.
3
Pastels and nudes are still around so if you feel scared by the overwhelm of bright ness, consider paring with nude shoes and a sheer, paler blouse or t-shirt.
4
your choice of footwear can change the whole look. high heeled courts and open toe wedges lengthen legs and give the air of sophistication and look great with both full length and cropped styles. Team with sports luxe – another trend – and trainers or high top wedges for running around. Girly colours, such as bright pink, worn with brogues and a blazer for an enigmatic masculine twist.
5
If trousers are super slim, you may need volume in your top. It can be loose and floaty, patterned or a sweater – summer here can be cold! Nautical stripes look great with red.

Choose accessories according to the overall theme of your look. Dramatic and bold or understated simplicity. Do the same with your handbag to keep the rhythm flowing.
Think about who you are today and what you are doing. A change of top and accessories can dramatically alter the entire look, meaning your trousers can play a very flexible role in your wardrobe.

Broccoli high in vitamin C, broccoli can sometimes relieve allergy symptoms and clear blocked sinuses. however if you don’t like broccoli you could try cabbage or cauliflower, which are part of the same family.
Onion and garlic With antihistamine properties, thanks to the high level of quercetin, onion and garlic are sometimes effective in fighting allergies and physical discomfort. They can also help to reduce the inflammation or swelling associated with an allergic reaction.
Carrots and pumpkins These vegetables are rich in carotenoids, the organic pigment that gives them their characteristic colours. Another great source of vitamin C as well as vitamin A and antioxidants. These not only help fight allergies, but can improve your eye health and help prevent heart disease.
Herbal teas Nettle, chamomile and lemon grass tea are packed with benefits when facing hay fever. by including these in your daily diet, you can help fight congestion and inflammation while taking advantage of their natural antihistamine and antioxidant properties.
Nuts and seeds Peanuts, cashews, walnuts and almonds are a high source of antioxidant vitamin e and magnesium, that can help ease wheezing and improve lung functions.
Oily fish Just like nuts and seeds, oily fish such as salmon, sardines, trout, and mackerel contain a high levels of omega 3 fatty acids, making them a useful food in the fight against hay fever-related symptoms.
Honey Considered by many people as the best food to fight hay fever, honey acts as an allergy desensitiser. Far from triggering allergy reactions, the tiny particles of pollen that honey contains helps immunise the human system against hay fever. Sourcing honey locally to you will ensure it contains pollen from the plants you’re affected by.
brush up! WrITTeN by KeLLy wiCKHaM
Dentists, diseases and dentures Did you know teeth cleaning is thought to be as old as 5000 bC! The egyptians are thought to have cleaned their teeth with twigs and leaves. Thankfully times have changed and we now have toothbrushes, fluoride toothpaste, mouthwash, toothpicks and dental floss. It’s important to choose a toothbrush that suits you, either electric or manual, as long as you use it correctly it doesn’t matter, but make sure it has round bristles of different sizes and is either medium or soft. Pick a toothpaste that does what you need, whether it’s for sensitive teeth, whitening, protecting enamel or child friendly. Shop around, you’re sure to find one that suits your needs!
Cleaning your teeth is just part of your regular routine, but follow our helpful guide and you’ll be able to flash your smile with pride and keep the dentist at bay!
Pearly whites A common misconception is that dirty stains and yellow teeth can be brushed away with vigorous force. Stop! by brushing hard you’re likely to push your gums up and expose nerve endings which could lead to gum disease. brush gently twice a day with whitening toothpaste and visit the hygienist to banish those grubby marks often caused by tea, coffee, wine and cigarettes. Drink acidic juices through a straw to avoid enamel erosion and pop some chewing gum in your mouth after eating anything that may stain.
Get a routine your teeth cleaning habits are just that, a habit. Did you know that many people only brush their teeth once a day and end their routine there? Studies have shown that it’s far better to brush your teeth twice a day for three minutes each time.
Do you floss? A whopping 70% of us don’t bother, but flossing can help to remove missed plaque and food remains. Simply run a length of floss between each tooth to remove hidden food remains. remember to use a mouthwash after to help keep your breath fresh and fluoride present. If you find that mouthwash leaves you with a dry, stinging mouth, try an alcohol free one.
Nothing but the tooth Make sure you visit your dentist every 6 months and book an appointment to see the hygienist too. Many people think they only need to visit the dentist when there’s problem. Not all mouth issues will arise in discomfort or pain, so your dentist can spot them and help advise on prevention and cures. 40

career crossroads? WrITTeN by graHaM brown

Accept responsibility
Do what you love
One crucial factor in being successful in the workplace is to ‘own’ your career. That means accepting responsibility NOW for where you are, acknowledging the previous success achieved and shortfalls. It means being honest with your boss if you’ve been passed over for that important promotion, and asking yourself where you could add value in your current role.
Of course it sounds like a cliché, but for good reason. It doesn’t matter if you’re earning a six figure salary, or have a company car, if you have no passion for what you do it will reflect in your daily work. Money is of course important, but it’s not the only factor when looking for a new job.
It could be simply delegating your workload, renegotiating your terms of references, or volunteering for higher profile jobs that will put you back in the spotlight. by stepping out of your comfort zone, and banishing the negative thoughts you can empower yourself to seize new opportunities when they arise, and take charge of your career to get it back on track.
People that love what they do are exciting to be around, have drive and vision and achieve their goals. Picture your dream job, what does it look like? What qualifications are needed, what personal qualities? Make a list of previous success stories, what personal attributes did you bring to the mix? how did it make you feel? Do you prefer working on your own to strict deadlines, or are you better placed in a more informal team environment?
however if staying in your current job fills you with dread, and you don’t see a future in the company then it’s time to take action.
Answers to these questions will start to form the basis of what you need to achieve to get one step closer to your dream job.

Dressed for success We don’t often think of ourselves as a brand, but unconsciously we put across a message to the world in our daily lives. We are a walking advertisement for all we are and do. First impressions obviously count in the interview room, but equally matter when job hunting, and networking. you should always dress for your next job, which sounds superficial but the way you conduct yourself speaks volumes for future employers. regardless of whether or not you have a killer Cv, the way you conduct yourself and the way you wear your clothes do matter. ensure you have a freshly pressed suit or dress at hand ready to put on for a job fair, walk with confidence into meetings, and people will start taking notice. remember that prospective bosses will not only assess whether you’re suitable for a job, but whether they can picture you fitting into their company environment.
Supercharge your CV Now you know the direction you’re heading in, you need to fine tune the one document that will get your first foot in the door, the Cv or Curriculum vitae. Many people make the mistake of listing pages of all their achievements, or use the same Cv to apply to multiple jobs. The Cv should be treated as a brief appraisal of your career to date, should be no more than two sides of A4, and should be tailored to each individual job application. In other words if you’re applying for a role that’s customer service focused, you need to highlight more experience you’ve had relating to customer service. It sounds obvious but is often over looked. Likewise listing every single GCSe you achieved twenty years previous is not necessary, as your more recent diplomas or qualifications carry more weight. A recruiter will spend less than 90 seconds skim reading your Cv, focusing on key words or phrases that are linked to the job requirement. So keep it relevant, avoid the use of acronyms and remember if they require further information they can ask for it...at the job interview! Good luck.

Five Formula One teams have confirmed their attendance, namely Mercedes, Williams, Ferrari, McLaren-honda and red bull. Always a crowd puller, the cars will be doing their usual spectacular runs up the hill on all three days. valentino rossi has confirmed his attendance, the seven time Moto GP world champion making his Goodwood debut and riding his yamaha yZr-M1 up the hill. There will be tributes to Derek bell who made his motor racing debut at Goodwood circuit in 1964, and this year celebrates the 40th anniversary of his maiden Le Mans win. A specific class covering cars associated with his career, which included five victories at Le Mans and two world sports car championships in 1985 and 1986, will take to the hill. Stirling Moss’s 1955 victory in the Mille Miglia driving a Mercedes 300 SLr with navigator Denis Jenkinson will be honoured with a never before seen gathering of seven Mercedes 300 SLr’s out of only eight survivors. Moss will be reunited with the very car which took him to victory in not only the Mille Miglia but also that years Tourist Trophy (with John Fitch) and the Targa Florio (with Peter Collins).
The ‘American Invasion’ will see a trio of NASCAr hero’s and cars, while the debut of Don Garlits ‘The Godfather of Drag racing’ will please fans of American racing. On a more vintage note, the 28 litre Fiat S76 which was officially the fastest car in the world in 1911, and has only recently been restored after almost 100 years will be taking to the hill as part of a dedicated category called ‘ earth shattering edwardian leviathans’.
The Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ concours celebrates its 20th year at the Festival, always attracting a magnificent collection of cars parked on the stables lawns. The Supercar run is a regular crowd pleaser too with debuts expected of the McLaren P1 GTr and Koenigs egg regera. Advice for buying an engagement ring Simply buy what you can afford and always go for a smaller better colour/clarity stone rather than the ‘biggest you can find for the budget’. This is false economy! A smaller, sparkly diamond looks so much nicer than a larger one that doesn’t. 52
Spring/Summer 2015
Platinum and White gold is the most popular choice now but don’t rule out the addition of coloured stones like sapphires and rubies if your prospective fiancé likes them! The timeless classic will always be the diamond solitaire ring, generally with a
round diamond. Cluster rings with a small row of diamonds around the edge is the very latest in popular trends. Whatever your request for jewellery, be it a quick sizing, a restoration or a new commission, RTFJ have the sparkle to make it that extra bit special.

bernard thinks he's an only child. At the age of 35, he learns otherwise. Discovering the results of a scientific experiment that left him as one of “a number”, bernard confronts his father, Salter. Identities are challenged, but how will Salter reveal the true events of the past? And more importantly, which bernard is the original?
Spring/Summer 2015
A Number, written by leading british playwright, Caryl Churchill, asks human questions of a complex scientific debate, not least the moral and human dilemmas when experimentation gets out of control. Churchill pushes the boundaries of scientific possibility to put an astonishing twist on parental guilt and sibling rivalry, on the nature/nurture debate and even the idea of free will. In a bold new design, audiences will be at the heart of the action, seated on stage surrounding the actors, offering them a unique experience of the play. milton jones The king of the one-liner and ‘Mock the Week’ regular, is back. His new tour, ‘The Temple of Daft’, will take him to some of the country’s best-known venues but, in comedy terms, he’s embarking on uncharted territory. That’s because joke machine Milton, the man who can cram in up to 250 gags a night, is now a joke machine with a purpose. His new tour strings the quips together in to a broader story, one that sees Jones take on the mantle of Indiana Jones, don the hat and set off on a madcap journey in to surrealist comedy. We caught up with Milton to talk about big hair, bad shirts, ‘Mock the Week’ and his new direction. Your new tour is called ‘The Temple of Daft’. Why? Previous tours have been lots of jokes in different forms, but basically lots of jokes. This is more of a story, more like one of my radio shows. It loosely, and I say loosely, follows a kind of adventure-archaeology type story. It started off with me noticing that I had the same surname as Indiana Jones, and it has all transpired from there. 58

Do you wear a hat? Do you have a whip?
Your schedule is preposterous. How do you remain sane? Is I do wear a hat at one point, not for the there a Milton Jones signature whole thing, ‘cause then people would workout regime? never see my hair.
You talk about using a narrative style, and you say this is a bit of a departure. What brought that on? Two things. When people see you on telly, they want to come and see the same sort of thing when they see a live show, but obviously not the same jokes. Moving to a narrative was a way of keeping the same style. It begins to mine other areas of jokes as well, in terms of, if you can do a scene where you’re talking between two people even though I’m the only person there - that’s a different sort of writing than just one-liner after one-liner.
How do you prepare for a tour? When this tour begins, anything I write will go in to the next tour. I’m amassing jokes from the moment my last tour beings, and then once it finishes, I begin to go to little out of the way places to test them. Generally speaking, the further you travel, the more pleased they are to see you. I will go with bits of paper and ideas, and it will be throwing mud against a wall and seeing what sticks. eventually I’ll accrue enough material to do try-outs nearer home. So, it’s a trial and error process from the beginning of that. years ago I started as an actor, and I’d quite like to incorporate more of it. For instance, previously the footprint of the tour has been I’ve gone on and done 15 minutes as a character, and then there’s a support act, and then I do the whole second half. There’s a different character this tour. Previously, I’ve done my granddad, but this will be a different relative.
Who? Th is is my uncle, my great-uncle, Sir randolph Digby Jones. he’s an explorer, I quite like warming the audience up with an obscure character to begin with, then making it more of a show.
Well, it’s difficult, and there are some weeks, or some months, where you’re away from home quite a lot, and maybe it’s the winter and maybe you’re up north and it’s quite grim all round… but it’s actually harder to write a tour, creatively, you know, that’s where the brain ache is. Once you’ve got a show that’s up and running, it’s more a physical battle. I try and see as many people around the country as I can, friends and relatives. because there’s nothing worse than talking to hundreds of people, and then being the last person out of the car park, go to a hotel, and then the next time you talk to someone properly is when you talk to hundreds of people the next night. That’s a recipe for madness.
doesn’t mean that’s all I’ve written; I’ve written another 100 that I’ve put in the bin, at least another 100, probably, maybe three times as much, and that’s the hard work. even after all this time, I’m thinking I’ve just written the best joke ever, and I go and do it and it just doesn’t work - however, the thing I improvise off the back of it does work. but, I wouldn’t have got to that place had I not tried the first one.
Do you have books and books of jokes that you might return to? Do ‘the Jones files’ exist in a filing cabinet somewhere? Never throw anything away, is my motto, in that if you thought there was a seed of something that was funny, keep it on file. especially one-liners because one syllable, one word, changing the picture in people’s heads, can suddenly make something work that didn’t before.
What do you do to reenergise? Me and some other comedians get together - I did it yesterday - and play football. We like it because we see each other, but also it’s one way of turning your head off, to become completely involved in something else.
Isn’t that football match full of people trying to outwit each other? Well, to be fair, there are about fi ve different running commentaries.
A lot of your comedy is quite word based – can you just come up with it? No. It’s all about writing as much as you can, and then taking the top 10%. There’s lots of stuff I’ve discarded. The new show will have between 200 and 250 jokes, probably, but that

Has being known as the king of the one-liner ever been an encumbrance at all? yeah I mean, in a way, I’ve got to be grateful... people want to put you in a box, so that originally it’s people who are booking gigs; they want to know what type of comedian you are to fi t on a bill. And I think that’s true of television as well, to some extent. On Mock the Week, I sit in the one-liner chair, and if it’s not me, it’s Stewart Francis or Gary Delaney - you know, it’s the ‘odd’ bloke, so that’s gone in my favour. I’m sort of grateful for where it’s got me, but if I go for an audition for another show, albeit a sitcom or something, it’s quite often as the crazy neighbour. you think well, I’m glad I’ve got this audition, but it’d be nice not to have to do that role forever. So, I suppose this show is me trying to move things on.
Tell me a little about ‘Mock the Week’. Do you have to swot up, read all the papers beforehand? It’s a bit like doing an exam in that we actually get some stuff beforehand, but the list is so long that basically it’s every story that happened in the news that didn’t involve someone dying over the last week. So, there’s no way I can cover all of it. you just hope, like an exam, that the bit you’ve revised comes up, because it records for nearly three hours for a half hour show. you hope that the 10 minutes you zoned out for isn’t the 10 minutes that appears on television. When I know I’ve got Mock the Week in the diary, I think, oh, it’ll be nice to see those people again, but it’s hard work, there’s no escaping that, especially after you’ve done quite a few.
When you get a group of funny people together in a programme is it competitive? I’ve known lots of those guys for years and we all get on and it’s fine. but the way it’s set up, it’s always seven people trying to get through a door for two. I can’t tell you how many 60

times I’ve had a joke that would have fi tted, and I just couldn’t get a word in. but I suppose from an outsider’s point of view, that is where the dramatic tension is, because you’ve got all these people trying to get a word in. It kind of makes for absorbing television.
A lot of your stuff is family friendly, and you’re sometimes called a Christian comedian – do you think that by going against the flow it’s served you rather well? yes, although it’s not a conscious effort: I’m not thinking how can I be different to this. I’m just doing what I would find funny myself, hopefully. And I think it’s true that I get a very wide demographic, as a result, coming to my tours, because…it’s partly having done Mock The Week and radio 4, those two ends of the human life scale. And it’s kind of accessible in a way that people feel happy to come as entire families, which is great to look at. It gives a slightly pantomime feel to a tour show because I know that there are grandparents who come with their grandchildren. I like that idea, it feels less niche and I quite often have to explain things, or a child will put their hand up and ask a question during a show, or it’s clear that some grandparents have brought some other grandparents with them.
What does 2015 hold for you, other than a mammoth, mammoth tour? yes, well it’s not often I can see a whole year ahead, but the tour goes to the end of June, then I do two weeks in edinburgh, then I do another two months in the autumn, by the looks of it, so that will be seven months. I’ve got another radio show, it’ll be the 11th series we’ve done for radio 4, to fi t in, we haven’t worked out when we’re going to do that yet. I’ve got other writing projects that I need to get on and do in my spare time, and there are odd things,
you know. Then there’s always the next tour to think about.
What’s your hair care secret? How do I get the Milton Jones look? Well, I did used to use wax, but actually under Tv lights that’s not so good – it wilts because it’s hot, and that’s not good. So now I use something called backcomb Dust, which is actually far drier and keeps your hair higher for longer.
Sounds like an advert. It does a bit, doesn’t it? I’m not sure I’m the image the company would want, necessarily, but it’d be nice to get some kind of sponsorship where I get free stuff. I usually say, the higher the hair, the thicker the crowd. hopefully, on my tour, I won’t have to have it too high.
And finally, we have to ask – where do you get your shirts from? Usually retro shops around about. It’s tricky with shirts because people think, ‘Oh zany shirt!’ but actually the zaniest of shirts is too much. What I like are shirts that people go, ‘Oh that looks… hang on, is that good or bad?’ It needs to be quite subtle, in a way, and I’ve got 100s of them. but yes, they are usually from Oxfam or retro shops where the old lady says, ‘Oh, that looks just you, that does,’ and they’ve no idea who I am.
