a word from the
The warm summer mornings, for me, have been reason enough to rise and shine with a smile. Al fresco breakfasts, aromas of fresh coffee and toast. Cool, freshly squeezed orange juice and muesli with plump sun ripened blueberries. A refeshingly warm breeze tickles awake my wild flowers as the sun burns off the morning dew, and our friendly resident robin drops in for a worm or two. i can’t get enough of it. Then of course it’s off to the studio. in my case involving a short commute around the garden, dead-heading the fuschias en route, topping up on coffee as i get caught in the congestion of a busy kitchen, babies to handover, staff to let in, and a beautiful wife to kiss toodle-pip, as she heads off work. That’s me ready for the day ahead, so what have we got for you? Tips on how to cut loose and set up your own dream business, how to hit the human ‘reset’ button when your day isn’t going to plan, plus a few summer essentials for keeping cool. we’re exploring fact or fiction when it comes to getting a good night’s kip and revealing the secret health benefi ts hidden within our everyday foods. we speak to local jewellery designer, Charlotte Cornelius, excited to be expanding her business into the heart of Southsea, plus so much more. So what are you waiting for – more coffee anyone?
If you have a business, event or service that you’d like Town & City readers to know about, please don’t hesitate to get in touch, we look forward to hearing from you.

ways to detox wriTTEn by laura knowleS
We’re the first generation to be exposed to such a high level of manmade chemicals on a daily basis. Synthetic chemicals are everywhere – in the air we breathe, food, drinking water, carpets, wall-paint, foamfilled furniture and household products. Some smoke, drink alcohol, eat junk food, take supplements and cover ourselves in personal care products loaded with chemicals and synthetic additives.
10
How we react to this chemical onslaught is very individual. Some of us are lucky and have good bio-chemistry, strong genes and it doesn’t seem to impact our health at all. Some of us are a little more delicate and suffer with low immune systems, asthma, irritated skin, poor digestion, lethargy and weight gain – all of which can be symptoms of toxic overload. And as chemicals increase so do the number of people who are beginning to react to them, even the hardy types are not as resistant as they once were.
The answer is often toxins. weight is not our enemy. Actually it’s our friend, our protector. A little weight can protect the body from toxins by encasing them in a safe layer of fat. The difficulty is when we lose the weight the toxins are released into the system and the body responds in one of two ways – by piling the weight back on to protect itself or the immune system crashes and we suffer with reoccurring colds and illnesses. To stop this cycle we need to lose the weight while gently removing the toxins. The body will then keep the weight off.
Have you ever tried a diet to shift a few pounds only to pile it all back on again? why is this?
Here are ten tried and tested recommendations for detoxing…

Juice
Skincare
Enjoy organic homemade juices in the warmer months, gently heat them in the colder months to avoid creating damp in the body. Make sure you overload on the veg and not the fruit. Fruit naturally has fibre in it to balance the sugar. when you remove the pulp, you remove the fibre and up spikes the blood sugar. So go veg crazy and go easy on the fruit.
Cleansing the outside is as important as cleansing the inside. Change your skincare and toiletries to lovely chemical free. we love neals yard because they smell gorgeous and contain no nasties whatsoever. The honey and orange face scrub is so lovely you can actually eat it!
Caffeine free
Food Firstly cut out the refined and processed food, wheat, alcohol, fizzy drinks, red meat and dairy. instead enjoy organic, seasonal fruit, veggies, wild fish, nuts and seeds for ten days. go for organic fruits and vegetables that contain more vitamins, trace elements and are free from chemical fertilisers and insecticides.
Water Drink lots of fresh filtered water to cleanse the body. Avoid british tap water when you’re cleansing the body. Tap water contains a number of different chemicals including chlorine, fluorine, arsenic, radium, aluminium, copper, lead, mercury, cadmium, barium, hormones, nitrates and pesticides.
replace your morning coffee for a herbal tea or a hot water with lemon. if you regularly drink coffee or caffeinated tea you may find cutting it out causes a headache. This is a withdraw symptom. Keep drinking filtered water and the headaches will ease.
Body brushing invest in a body brush and start dry skin brushing first thing in the morning.
Detox your home goodbye Cillit bAng! with all your toxic ingredients. Hello Method or natures Sunshine Concentrate which can be used safely on just about everything in the home.
Detox your emotions negativity breeds toxicity in the body. watch your thought patterns. Are you being kind to yourself? A really nice approach is to talk to yourself like you would a child. Forgive your mistakes, be gentle with yourself.
Herbal cleanse
Breathe
Many detoxes are a bit rough and ready and make you feel rubbish as the liver tries to process the toxins too quickly. Like a big fat hangover but without the night before. it’s much nicer to have a gentle cleanse, which is why we recommend the Healthy Starter Pack by natures Sunshine. it’s designed to support all the key elimination systems of the body – liver, intestines, digestive, circulatory and urinary – so the liver doesn’t go into overdrive and you don’t have that nasty detox feeling for three days. Take the Healthy Starter Pack with Omega to ensure the healthy fats are replacing the nasty ones that are being eliminated by the body. we recommend ten days on, one day off, ten days on again.
go and sit in nature and just be. As you breathe in picture your stomach, your abdomen and your lungs filling with fresh cleansing oxygen and when you exhale release and let go carbon dioxide. Delicious.
what’S the point in all thiS DetoXing?
It’s the secret to feeling lighter, brighter, energetic and having that much loved spring in your step. And it’s as good as Honey and Orange face scrub on toast. If you are interested in detoxing contact The Detox Fairy, Sam Mill at Balanced Wellness www.balancedwellness.co.uk Summer/Autumn 2015

while it’s important to have a healthy diet and exercise regularly, sometimes this can seem boring and mundane. but did you know that some foods can actually reduce your risk of cancer, prevent sunburn, or even reduce the risk of developing Alzheimers? read on to find out more… whole-cookeD carrotS
lettuce
Prepare your salad the day before you eat it. When the lettuce is shredded the day before it will quadruple its antioxidant content. Shred the lettuce and place in a plastic bag with a paper towel to absorb any extra moisture. Pop it into the fridge until the next day. 14

Dark chocolate
Eating chocolate is good for your health; Dark chocolate is made from the seed of a cocoa tree and is one of the best sources of antioxidants. Dark chocolate can lower your risk of heart disease and decrease blood pressure.
toMatoeS
Sunscreen can protect our skin in the hot summer months, but tomatoes can too. Tomato paste is the most effective, (eat it, don’t spread it on your body). Lycopene is the natural pigment in tomatoes that makes them turn red. This Lycopene ingredient filters out the sun rays to protect our skin from sunburn and keep your skin looking young. waterMelon
Keeping hydrated this summer is very important. Drinking water is very important, but to make it more interesting, bite into a slice of delicious melon. Watermelon is made up of 92% water, (hence the name) and keeps your memory sharp and your mood stable. Keeping hydrated will also help keep your body cool.
tea
corn
Lutein and Zeaxanthin in corn filters the sun’s harmful rays and can offer its benefits when we eat it. The vegetable also promotes healthy vision and reduces the risk of developing blindness later in life. It’s also a great source of fibre; the brighter the corn the better!
Tea helps soothe stress and keeps you relaxed. Three cups of tea a day can reduce the risk of heart disease, prevent cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Whether it’s black, green or white tea, the ingredient Catechins is a diseasefighting type of flavonoid and antioxidant. Stick the kettle on! Summer/Autumn 2015

what is it?
MSG is now considered part of our food culture; we’ve all heard of MSG and know it’s something to do with junk food. But what is it? Is it bad for us? MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) is a flavour enhancer, which originated in Japan and is classed as “safe” by the U.S Food and Drug Administration. Is it bad for you?
wriTTEn by Fiona Stanton

What is MSG?
Foods that contain MSG
MSg was discovered in 1908 by a Japanese biochemist, Kikunae ikeda, who was trying to make an ingredient from seaweed. He studied many different salts, but found sodium glutamate the tastiest. it’s a type of salt found in nearly all foods, and it’s known to bring out a whole range of sweet, salty, sour and bitter fl avours. ikeda referred to this product as umami meaning ‘tasty’ in Japanese, and it’s often referred as the ‘fi fth taste’. in some countries, they love it so much that they use MSg as a table-top seasoning!
believe it or not, it’s not just fast-food restaurants that use MSg, it’s found in nearly all foods including Asian cooking, takeaways, commercially packaged foods such as chips, crackers, soups, lunch meats, salad dressings. MSg is also found in tomatoes, Parmesan, potatoes, mushrooms and many other fruits and vegetables. Originally this taste-bud tingler was used in Japanese and Chinese cuisine to blend fl avours, but it was soon discovered that it could be added to almost anything.
Summer/Autumn 2015
MSg has had a lot of bad press about its possible adverse effects; some people have found that consuming large amounts of MSg can cause headaches, nausea, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, and more. However, there isn’t any scientific evidence to prove this. Many worry whether or not it’s safe for children - however human breast milk contains ten times more glutamate (found in MSg) than cow’s milk. There are many controversial opinions about MSg and whether or not it’s good for you; the general consensus is try not to eat too much of it – check the label, and if you have sensitive dietary requirements always check with your gP.

I WORK LONG HOURS
Making simple changes throughout the day can help to get you on your feet. Try walking down the hall with a note or message for a colleague instead of emailing. guide to
getting a dog
Getting a dog is a big commitment for a couple and should never be entered into lightly. Town & City is here with a few things to consider… wriTTEn by Mia habenS
Make sure you’re ready you need to have some serious conversations about whether you’re ready to look after a dog, not just now but in 10–15 years time. Dogs aren’t just a commitment in so far as walking them and picking up their poo, they’re a huge financial commitment too and will dictate how you live you’re lives for the foreseeable future. no more swanning off to festivals or going on long weekends for example (unless you take the dog with you). you also need to consider how you’d handle going on holiday or deal with life changing decisions such as moving house, having kids, travelling, the list goes on.
Do your research Firstly have a discussion about what you both want from a dog. if one of you wants a big, boisterous dog to play with and the other wants it to be carried around in a little bag and sit on a velvet cushion looking cute, you’re going to have problems from the outset. Once you have a criteria of what you both want, you can go and look at the breeds 20
Summer/Autumn 2015
available to suit your needs. For example, if you suffer with allergies then a poodle or short-haired dog which doesn’t shed would be high on your priority list. Also try to be flexible and don’t set your sights on a particular breed just yet, you may think they’re cute, but they may be completely unsuited to your lifestyle.
Do more research Once you’ve decided on a couple of breeds for your shortlist, do even more research. Many dogs have genetic problems which could lead to huge vet bills as they get older. Alsatians, for example often suffer from arthritis in their hips and spaniels are particularly prone to gum disease. That’s not to say you shouldn’t go for those breeds, just go into it forearmed with as much information as possible. Visit your local dog shelter and ask any questions you may have. They’ll be happy to help and would rather that than end up with your dog when you decide you can’t look after it any more.
Advertise with us, call 023 9229 4408
Get insurance Pet insurance can be expensive too, upwards of £30 a month in most cases. However it will save you a world of pain if anything happens to your dog. A broken leg could cost over £1000 to set if you pay in one go, so that monthly payment is well worth it to avoid those unexpected bills. it’s not just accidents to worry about, Schnauzers are particularly susceptible to diabetes, for example, and your insurance will contribute toward its care for the duration of the illness within policy limits. Don’t be tempted to put it off, if you get insurance once an issue has already been diagnosed the policy may not cover it or you could end up paying more.
Please help RSPCA Solent Branch by setting up a regular gift today YOU can make a difference to the lives of thousands of animals.
Be sociable introduce your dog to as many experiences as possible when they’re young. Things like other people, children, other dogs, cats, people on bicycles, people with beards, loud noises, cars, roads etc etc etc! your dog needs to understand that these are part of their world and nothing to be feared. Fear is usually the cause of wider issues like aggression so the more you do the better your dog will be. Take your dog to puppy socialisation classes where they can learn basic commands and play with other dogs in a controlled environment. This is great for their development. if you’re getting an adult dog, make sure you find out if they have any behavioural issues first and see an expert trainer to see if it can be corrected, it will pay dividends later.
Training is ongoing

Teaching your dog to be obedient is a lifelong task. while most dogs will learn basic commands quickly, if you don’t enforce your ‘rules’ early on and become lapse in your training your dog will quickly realise and start misbehaving. Continue your training while on your walks too. Most dogs will perform in the comfort of your own home when you have a treat in your hand, but the real trick is for them to do it when they have distractions around them and you have empty hands! you’ve all heard the saying ‘a dog is for life, not just for Christmas’ and nothing could be further from the truth. However if you have thought about it fully, done all your research and are committed to their welfare and training, you will have a happy, loyal and well behaved friend for life!

Wedding folder
Here’s our top ten checklist, to consider around six to nine months before your wedding Day.
Date and venue First of all, there’s the all important date. This should be your priority even before dress shopping. book the venue well in advance to avoid disappointment, especially if you and your husband-to-be have a particular place in mind. Having the date set will help you organise all the important details thereafter, including the dress.
Wedding dress now the wedding dress. Make sure you do this as early as possible. Have fun with this, bring family, girlfriends, whoever you wish. Some places need you to book appointments in advance and you’ll need at least three fittings allowing time for alterations.
Engagement Party if you’re planning a long engagement or just like a good party, why not throw an engagement party. but remember those you invite to your engagement party will expect a wedding invitation too, so be careful.
Keep your eye open for anything that gives you inspiration, such as; bridal, fashion, gardening, food magazines. These folders can also help other brides-to-be in the future and act as scrapbook to look back on.
Agree on a budget if you’re lucky enough, your families might help towards your special day, but whatever you and your groom decide make sure it’s financially achievable within the time, or you may find yourself having to make upsetting cuts.
Start the seating plan if you want to be super-organised use a database with columns for contact info, rSVPs, other relevant information, (i.e dietary requirements). For the seating plan, consider providing ice-breaker games for those who don’t know each other. Avoid placing any arch-rivals next to each other!
Photographers, bands, florists and cake-makers Ask other brides what they had, word of mouth goes a long way and is easier than trying to find a needle in a haystack. it might even save you a few pennies. Keep all contact information in your wedding folder. if you’re considering buying a wedding album for the pictures following the big day, research online as this can often reveal cheaper options than buying through your photographer.
Gift list Pick your favourite store, or if that’s difficult there are lots of options online which can range from honeymoon vouchers to kitchen utensils, and click away. remember to supply this gift list in the invitations that you send out.
Honeymoon After all the hard work planning the day of your dreams, you’ll need a much deserved relaxing honeymoon-break. Decide on what you want and do your research. Don’t forget to check out the reviews before booking. Make sure your passport is up to date and you’ve had any jabs required. Don’t forget your to book it in your maiden name unless you plan to change your passport prior to traveling. you may kiss the bride.

Parabens are chemical preservatives used by the cosmetic and toiletry industry in all of our favourite products from face creams, make-up, perfumes to shampoos and deodorants. So why would parabens be found in breast tumours? Apparently parabens mimic the action of the female hormone oestrogen which can drive the growth of human breast tumours. Dr Darbre from reading University said “Many of the concentrations of the parabens measured in these breast tissues would be sufficient to drive the growth of oestrogen-dependent human breast cancer cells in the laboratory.” For a few years now i have stayed away from chemical deodorants, not because of parabens but because of the aluminium salts they use as an antiperspirant.
Aluminium is linked with all sorts of nasty diseases including alzheimer’s, kidney and liver problems, memory loss, osteoporosis and cancer. And i really didn’t like the sound of that. So i found natural alternatives instead. now i know about the paraben issue i’m definitely staying away from chemical deodorants. i’m unsure why we’ve become a society that’s so worried about bodily functions. we must shave our hair, we must not sweat, we must not smell. i agree that nobody is a fan of stale body odour, however a clean woman without deodorant or perfume can smell incredible. both men and women have these natural chemical responses – pheromones – which are designed by Mother nature to attract a mate. what a marvellous thing to know that we have inbuilt fragrances that smell delicious and are not full of horrid chemicals which could potentially kill us in years to come. Forget the Lynx effect, we have our own power magnets already within us.

taking the mystery out of colouring
grey hair
Those first grey hairs, do you pluck, ignore them, adjust your parting, wear a hat or recklessly let it happen with ‘grey abandon!’? what we perceive as grey, silver or white hair is actually hair that has no pigment at all. Spotting the first few greys coming through doesn’t necessarily mean you’re on the slippery slope to the blue rinse brigade, although with fashion, at present, a blue rinse would go down rather well! As the years roll by the hair colours that suited us in our twenties is may not be the ideal hair colour for us in our fifties and sixties. The right colour can literally take years off - if done properly. At David Antony you are in safe hands, they look at the best solution for you, whether you want to embrace and work with it or hide it completely, they have the answers. As your skin matures and loses the radiance of youth so does the hair, but with exceptional colouring skills David Antony are able to make the transition so much less traumatic. Using several different methods, they can enhance, blend, disguise and cover. One of the most popular methods used is to weave into the 28
Summer/Autumn 2015
hair highlights and lowlights with several different tones and depths. This not only breaks up the grey, giving a soft natural finish, but also gives a much kinder regrowth and is fairly low maintenance. For an even more natural finish they can weave out some very fine pieces of hair and either lift or darken. Then they blend through a semi permanent over the rest of the hair to give another soft natural result. Adding contrasts of colour through the hair can give an illusion of thicker fuller hair. Combine this with a redken moisturising treatment to bring that dehydrated grey back to life and you’ll leave the salon feeling at least ’10 years younger!’ At David Antony Hairdressing and beauty colouring really is a passion. David is one of the UK’s top colourists and is in high demand for his innovative techniques on grey hair. The team at David Antony are qualified colourists, with several holding a degree in hair colour with redken. your colour is in safe hands!

stone age
art
Join in the dynamic ancient art of pit firing workshops at Butser Ancient Farm on 16th, 22nd and 23rd August. Ceramic art is one of the most enduring art forms, surviving for centuries buried deep in the ground, until unearthed by determined archeologists. it’s an art form that combines and connects with anthropology, archeology, art and all human history from the Stone Age to modern day. All of these aspects appeal to contemporary ceramic sculptor Mary Kaun-English, as well as the art of combining the essential elements of earth, fire, water, wood and air that she uses to create her striking, earthy modern ceramic sculptures through the ancient art of pit firing. recently awarded the 2015 Marsh Heritage Crafts Trainer Award at the Heritage Crafts Association Annual Conference, Mary will be running workshops for those who want hands-on creative experience of this ancient art form at the butser Ancient Farm, a unique experimental archaeological site constructed of iron Age buildings and located between Petersfield and waterlooville in Hampshire. Create your own ceramic pot and learn how to use a pit fire to colour it. This will create a wonderful unique piece for you to take home.
34
Summer/Autumn 2015
During this workshop the ancient art of pit-firing ceramics will be explained in a historical and contemporary setting. you will create your own work in clay and return the following week to fire the work using ancient techniques. All tools and materials are provided and no previous prior experience is required.
Pit-ďŹ red ceramics Pit firing is a modern adaptation of an age-old method and is an active collaboration with the elements of earth, wind and fire. in a pit, in the earth or sand, unglazed ceramic sculptures are placed on a bed of wood shavings. Organic materials such as coffee grounds, banana peels and seaweed are placed around the work, as well as copper wire and steel wool; these materials will contribute colour to the ceramics as they burn. The ceramics are then covered with firewood and lit. Once the wood is vigorously burning the pit is covered with metal sheeting to retain the heat. Though the fast and hot fire tests the ceramics to the limit of their tolerance and contributes to a high breakage rate, the successful pieces make the loss rate worthwhile. The warm reds, pinks, blues and yellows that result from the collaboration with the fire and air make each unique piece embody the colours of the earth.

For those wanting to spread their career wings outside of the British Isles and experience new cultures, there is an array of opportunities for young and old alike. With travel being on many a bucket list, combining it with work makes the big move that bit easier and not so daunting. From a student exchange to a professional sabbatical, foreign countries have so much choice for you to do something different with your life.
Student exchange Many universities and colleges offer excellent programs to study abroad, giving you the opportunity to experience a different way of life and learn and develop your skills. This is dependant on the type of course you wish to study, so do your research on the educational establishments that have this option. Placements can be as short as six months and as long as one year. Check universities, colleges and student exchange websites to see what’s on offer. 38

Gap year you’ve graduated and have a dent in your wallet from the fees you’ve been paying. if the idea of winding back to your parents doesn’t entice you and the world of full time work doesn’t appeal either, fear not, a working gap year gives you the chance to see the world and earn some money at the same time. it’s a no brainer! First, pick your destination. if it’s wall to wall sunshine you crave, Australia is perfect. The big cities, such as Sydney, Melbourne and Perth are good places to start. Fruit picking use to be the job to do, but these days you can use your skills and interests to find the perfect gap year job, from graphic design to working on the barrier reef. if down under is a bit too far to venture, why not try somewhere a bit closer to home, such as France. Discover your inner cooking skills and work as a chef or test your water skills as a Paddleboard instructor. There is so much choice. gapyear.com is a fantastic website that breaks down the countries and jobs available.

career change Professional sabbatical or career break, it’s not just the young twenty somethings looking at their careers in a different perspective, wanting to ‘find themselves’ and pursue their travelling bug. Men and women in later life are questioning their current 9–5 situation and embarking on sabbaticals and taking their careers off piste. If you’re looking for a rewarding opportunity, there are hundreds of charities and volunteering jobs across the globe. If you’re that bit older you have an advantage over the young thrusters. A bit more life experience, maybe less commitments and in some cases a good pension pot to keep you afloat allowing you to do that bit more. Volunteering can be anything from working with animals to helping a country that has suffered from a crisis. Organisations such as GVI (gvi.co.uk) Travellers Worldwide (travellersworldwide.co.uk) and Projects Abroad (projects-abroad.co.uk) are great sites to begin your adventure. The opportunities are endless, so make the jump and experience something life changing.

Ever been tempted to start your own business? Here’s our exclusive guide to helping you decide whether self-employment could be for you.
Website Working for ‘The Man’ (or ‘The Woman’) can be a draining experience – giving it your all to make money for someone who enjoys the profits while you take a much smaller share. Being employed does have its advantages of course; you don’t have to worry about sorting your own tax arrangements, you get guaranteed annual holiday time, sick pay and other benefits that might include a healthcare plan, subsidised services or membership of a local gym. There’s nothing wrong with working for someone else, but the fact is all these companies started somewhere – usually with one person having an idea, or making a better job of an existing one – and thus there is no reason why you can’t do the same thing yourself. If you have that spark of an idea, or if you just really want to work for yourself and stop earning money for other people, all you have to do is go for it. There are some obvious considerations – such as whether or not your business idea actually stands a chance of success – but generally with the right approach, anything can be made to work.
The idea So, you have your idea. Let’s say you want to get started right away and it’s something you’d be doing full-time. Firstly, if you already have a job, you need to think about how you can get your new venture up and running without throwing all your eggs into one basket. if you just walk out you might find yourself in seriously hot water. Consider phasing things in gradually and then, once it looks like time to spring into action, give the required notice and make the final preparations as you serve your final weeks. Everything covered below is quick and easy and can be phased in without much effort at all.
in this increasingly digital age, you should strongly consider a website. whereas ten years ago it wasn’t so important, it really is now. information is only ever a few clicks away. So one of the first things you need to do is secure a good web domain. The simplest way to do this is to type the name you want into the address bar in your internet browser. if it already exists, you’ll be taken to it, and if not you can use a site like easily.co.uk to see how much such a domain would cost – plus arrange hosting facilities and email accounts to use with the site. Actually building the website is the harder part and there are hundreds if not thousands of companies which will build one for you, but it’s something you can just as easily do yourself. you could save yourself the hassle and get a simple site without many bells and whistles built for less than £300. There are some companies which charge ten times that and really, you might not be able to tell the difference. As you’ve already set out on the road to doing things for yourself, consider googling ‘build your own website’ and you’ll find everything you need.

There are many other considerations but setting up your own business is not difficult. It just takes dedication and determination. For a great resource, head to gov.uk/ browse/business.
Costs Keeping costs to a minimum is vital when starting out (even if you have wangled a start-up loan from somewhere like ukbusinessgrants.org or fundingcircle.com). Coming up with a brand name is free but trademarking it is not. There are costs involved and some free searches are available, but perhaps the most robust and cost-effective method is through the government’s own facility (ipo.gov.uk). The right Start application process is simple, doesn’t cost the earth and includes the legal registration at the end. you also need to make sure you’re not stealing anyone else’s ideas, brands or names.
Legalities Premises
Premises are another major, and potentially very costly, consideration. Can you carry out your new business venture from home or will you need to rent space somewhere? if you can do it from home, go for it. A simple office-based venture requires just a computer, an internet connection and possibly a phone (with software like Skype, you can make and receive voice and video calls all from your computer and never have to pick up a phone – or pay for line rental), so space needn’t be an issue. working from home also generally qualifies for tax relief on utilities such as electricity. if, however, you are looking to set up a production line of some sort, make sure you speak to all the local estate agents to find out what’s available.
Setting up the company as a legal entity is easy – just go to companieshouse.gov.uk and follow the instructions. There you can find out what is best for you in terms of setting up a limited company (Ltd) or limited liability partnership (LLP, if you have any partners in the business). Setting up a business bank account is straight forward too, but not absolutely necessary. As long as you don’t have a poor credit rating, you should get approved. if you want or need to register for VAT (you can do so optionally, which can be very beneficial for small businesses), you must have a business bank account. For more on taxation matters, head to hmrc.gov.uk. you may want to find an accountant to reduce the tax headaches, but that can wait until you’ve started earning!

earth natural burials on the south downs…
“That was wonderful”. Not words you expect to hear from someone leaving a funeral, and yet these are common expressions of relief and enjoyment heard at The South Downs Natural Burial Site. Many people believe that funerals have a rigid order of service, but in fact there is no legal format at all!
We’ve set the scene for the service, and now perhaps you’re beginning to see that anything is possible.

It’s that time of year again, summer holidays are here and it seems like everyone everywhere is going away. Beach holidays, cruises, UK breaks and city breaks, whatever your preferred holiday, it’s impossible to escape the dreaded task of packing. We’re here with some tops tips to make the packing process a little more bearable and help keep you in the holiday mood.

holiday packing wriTTEn by eMMa robertS
Check ahead Find out what your hotel provides. Even the very basic of hotels will at least provide towels and a hairdryer. These bulky items take up a lot of room especially in a cabin sized suitcase. Avoid packing unnecessary items and use this space for other essentials. 58
Summer/Autumn 2015
Think ahead about the type of holiday you’re going to have and the footwear required. Save space by packing socks and underwear or any other small items into your shoes. it might be worth wrapping them in a plastic bag to keep them fresh!
Rolling Consider rolling your clothing. you’d be surprised how much more you can fi t into your suitcase, and if you’re lucky, you won’t need to iron them when you get to the other side. items like heavy trousers can be laid fl at at the bottom or across the top. Place solid or fragile items inbetween rolled items and squeeze in the extra little bits when you’re full.
The horror stories of leaking toiletries are endless. Avoid this completely by making sure you wrap all leakable objects, including sun tan lotions, shower gels and hair products in a plastic carrier bag or other effective waterproof protection. it’s more effective to wrap each product individually so that you can place them in the gaps instead of placing them altogether in one bulk.
Avoid extra costs it’s hard to keep track on the weight of your case. you could get to the airport and be greeted with an extra charge for overweight luggage if you’re not careful. To avoid this embarrassing and expensive situation, invest in some luggage scales. you can pick these up quite cheaply and use them over and over again. it might even be worth packing them for the return journey after filling up on gifts and holiday purchases. it pays to be prepared.

Stress Stress is the number one cause of sleepless nights. If you’re going through a stressful period have the pen and paper by your bed so if you wake you can scribble thoughts down rather than letting them whirl and keep you awake. A B complex will help calm nerves and support adrenals when we’re busy.
Night Sweats Night sweats can cause misery especially for women experiencing the menopause. Alternatives to HRT include Evening Primrose Oil and a diet rich in phytoestrogens (soya, legumes, grains and vegetables).

how to hit the
human reset button when everything’s going wrong! it’s a classic prescription when our electrical appliances, namely the computer, decides to crash from overload – we hit the restart button and most of the time it fires back into action. we’re here with a few tips on how to hit the human restart button when you’re seconds from crash! Take a break
Ask for help
Put everything down, get up and leave the room or walk away from the situation. Forget about everything that might be distracting you and try to regain composure and focus. Once you feel ready and clear headed you can return your task in hand.
before signing off or completing a piece of work, why not ask a colleague or friend to take a look. Often a fresh pair of eyes can spot something you've overlooked or missed.
Prioritise
it's easy to lose motivation and confidence when things to go wrong. Take a moment to remind yourself of the positive things in your life. your achievements, family and the things you're looking forward to. not only will this improve your mood it will refocus your attention on the tasks that are pulling you down.
Juggling multiple tasks can often lead to a lack of focus leaving you confused spending more time trying to work out what to do, as opposed to reaching your goals. Prioritise your tasks and organise according to deadline. when broken into smaller individual chunks, your goals will feel less daunting to achieve. 62
