taste great

infused water; it’s all the rage at the moment, a fad that cannot be escaped. so what is this new lifestyle trend? Well infused water is water mixed with fresh fruit, herbs, vegetables or spices. a healthy and fresh alternative to water, infusing your drink can give you that zest for life that you’ve been searching for. one of the biggest appeals to this popular trend is the opportunity to make this flavoured drink easily at home while knowing exactly what ingredients are going in, so no artificial flavourings, no preservatives, and only natural sugars and flavours. many who choose to make infused water at home opt to keep the fl avours subtle, adding a hint of fruit or raw vegetable. What’s so appealing about infused water is its ability to transform the fl avour of water. for some water is boring and unappealing, but by adding a slice of orange or a strawberry you can transform the fl avour of the bottle into something much more tasty. The popularity goes far further than just the taste of infused water, but for those wanting to watch their sugar intake will appreciate the hint of fl avour with the lack of sugars and artificial fl avourings. 6

Spring/Summer 2017

if you look at the label on the packaging of a bottle of fl avoured water you cannot miss the mention of artificial sweeteners and added preservatives. By making your own fl avoured water, you’re in the driving seat. Here are a few recipes for infusing your water at home: • strawberries + grapefruit + sage • blood orange + ginger + basil • cucumber + grapefruit + rosemary So How Do You make Your infuSeD waTer?

1) Add the fruit or vegetables into the glass 2) Take a spoon and begin to mash and breakdown your ingredients, if using citrus fruits, peel the skin to avoid a bitter taste 3) Take the herb or spice of your choice and gently mash the leaf, helping to release the natural extracts from your chosen ingredient 4) Then add the water, this can be either sparkling or still. Then simply enjoy!

What exercises are best? Yoga

Yoga is a great way of building your strength and posture and is especially good when pregnant. Pregnancy yoga classes focus specifically on breathing techniques, posture and yoga poses that will help prepare you for labour.

Keeping fit doesn’t have to stop when you’re pregnant. Making sure you stay active is essential for you and your baby. OK, so we’re not talking about running a marathon or sparring in a boxing ring at nine months, but there are many exercises and activities you can get involved in throughout your pregnancy with or without a gym membership.

Keeping fit

Swimming

Swimming targets every muscle in the body and is a safe exercise to carry out when pregnant. It’s classed as low impact and therefore doesn’t put too much pressure on the body.

pregnant

20–40 minutes a week is sufficient. If you’re not a keen swimmer, why not give aquanatal classes or aqua aerobics a go, both great ways of keeping fit with other mums to be. walking

There’s nothing better than a real good stretch of the legs and walking is the perfect activity to keep you fit whilst pregnant. Maybe not climbing Mount Everest, but 30 minutes a day is best. Simply walking around the office counts, but not in the direction of the cream cakes! gYm

You don’t have to put notice on your gym membership when you find out your pregnant. You can still use the equipment and weights. Just advise the gym staff how far gone you are and adapt your regular routine. Weight training is a great way to build your strength. If you currently use weights in your gym routine, reduce the amount you lift with little reps.

eating for two

If you’ve recently found out that you are expecting, it’s important to know the right foods to eat to help you and your baby get off to the best start. Written By fiona STanTon

YogHurT

Yoghurts are a good source of calcium which include high amounts of vitamins and minerals, which are important in pregnancy. (Greek yoghurt is particularly beneficial). eggS

Protein-rich foods such as chicken, eggs, milk and even steak are great for a growing foetus and will help with the development. cHickpeaS

Legumes are a great source of fibre and includes foods such as chickpeas, lentils and beans and provides baby with the vitamin B9 which is very important for growth and hard to find in other foods. SweeT poTaToeS

Sweet potatoes are very rich in beta-carotene, which translates to vitamin A and it is advised that pregnant women should increase their vitamin A intake to help promote healthy baby development. Dark leafY greenS

Soft cheese most cheeses are ok to eat while pregnant, and you can eat soft cheeses, like brie, camembert, and blue cheese, just make sure they are cooked first.

Pate all types of pate, including vegetarian, should be avoided while expecting. pate it contains listeria which could harm your baby and cause infection.

Sushi some sushi is oK to eat, such as ready-made sushi as the fish has had a freezing treatment. it is also oK to eat raw or lightly cooked fish if it has been frozen first. There is a very small chance that some wild fish may contain parasitic worms and if the fish is frozen this will kill the worms.

Caffeine try and limit your caffeine to about 200mg a day, one cup of tea is 75mg so you don’t have to go without. High levels of caffeine can result in low birth weight in babies so just be careful.

Fish

Such as broccoli and spinach are rich in fish with high levels of mercury, such as tuna could affect your baby’s nervous system so try to avoid antioxidants which will benefit the immune system, help digestion and prevent constipation. any more than two portions of oily fish per week. 14

making time for your

marriage

Maintaining your marriage can be difficult especially with young children at home. Life is absorbed with changing nappies, school runs, keeping the house in order and juggling careers. While these responsibilities are important, the glue holding a family together is the foundation of a solid marriage. Town & City is here with a handful of ideas for making time for your marriage and to having fun doing it.

Date night Having a baby can change everything and when a couple brings a child into the family the focus often shifts towards the new addition. as children grow older family routines are often dictated by schedules, leaving little time for romance. like most things in our busy lives if it’s not planned, it won’t happen. take time to schedule a date-night into your calendar once or twice a month and use this a time to reconnect and strengthen your relationship. Just like a flower needs water to grow a relationship need nurturing with time spent together. SurpriSe SurpriSe Just because you’ve been together forever doesn’t mean you should stop being spontaneous. surprise your partner by showing up at work and taking them to lunch, or dropping off an unexpected goodie bag filled with their favourite treats. on a smaller scale, don’t just text your partner the to-do list or pick-up schedules, but take the time to send a quick and thoughtful love note. 16

Spring/Summer 2017

CanDle light in the race to change nappies and run errands it can be hard for new parents to find quality time together. try using an intimacy candle to cue the desire for an intimate encounter. in the morning one partner will light the candle to signal their interest in intimacy that evening. during the day the partner who lit the candle is responsible for creating anticipation – perhaps by leaving a note or sending a flirty message. Being creative and focusing on closeness in marriage is essential to building your connection. MeMory lane spend an evening together and go back to that restaurant where you had your first date or indulge on a nice bottle of wine and watch your favourite movie together. take yourself back to those special moments when you were head over heels in love to remind each other how much you care.

Raising a family can be a juggling act but there is always time to invest in your marriage. Make communication, romance, intimacy and education a priority to strengthen your relationship, and in turn your strong family values will impart upon your children creating a foundation for their own future relationships.

pressing

flowers writtEn by cHarloTTe JoHnSon

pressing flowers was once a popular pastime and a fantastic way to preserve time. By pressing a flower from a stunning bouquet or a bloom you spot in the garden, it’s a way of helping to remember a special moment. By taking the time to press a flower you can preserve a small slice of beauty, perfect whether framed and hanging from the wall, placed in a locket, or glued to a card. if you’re thinking of trying your hand at pressing flowers, here is how to make the most perfect memories.

For a beginner, consider picking flat bloomed flowers such as daises and roses. If pressing flowers with stamens like lilies, remove the stamens to ensure that the pollen won’t stain. If you’re planning to pick your flowers from your garden, make sure to pick them in the morning shortly after the dew has evaporated and before the bud has opened. By picking blooms before they have peaked will look much better when they have dried and been pressed. Once you’ve picked your flower be sure to condition it before beginning to press. To condition, cut the stems then place into water. While in the water, re-cut the stems again at an angle, allowing water to be absorbed before placing in a vase filled with water. 28

Spring/Summer 2017

When it comes to pressing your flowers you can use books, the microwave or the iron method. One of the easiest techniques is the use of books. The only things you need are; absorbent paper and a heavy book. Start by placing your chosen flower between two sheets of absorbent paper with your heavy book on top, then placing a heavy item on top of the book to make sure the flower is fully pressed. Leave the flowers in the book for a week before checking on them. After a week you might need to replace the absorbent paper before leaving for another week or two for it to dry completely, taking a total of two to three weeks before the pressed flower is ready. Once your flower has been pressed, you then have to decide what to do with it. You can either hang it in a frame or stick to a card addressed to a loved one, the choice is yours.

How we eat our soft boiled eggs can even provide some revealing clues about our personalities. Human behaviour expert, dr Jane cox has been analysing soft boiled egg eating behaviours and is able to attribute different personality traits to people depending on their egg-eating methods:

delicious

eggs

The wierd and wacky ways brits eat their eggs – from dunking pigs-inblankets to creating ‘yolk spread’ As hen eggs trump chocolate eggs, it’s time to dip into how the nation eats the oozy delight and what it can reveal about your personality According to latest research, eggs have much to be ‘eggstatic’ about as a third of Brits admit they prefer to reach for traditional soft boiled eggs over their chocolate equivalents. Results of the study commissioned by the ‘happy egg co’., also found that as a nation of foodies there is great variety in how we tuck into our soft boiled eggs. Gone are the days where we stick to traditional toasted soldiers for dipping. Brits are now opting for: crispy bacon, asparagus, croque monsieur, chips, pigs in blankets and even fish fingers. Eating behaviours have also advanced, ranging from new found methods such as peeling the shell and smashing on toast, to creating ‘yolk spread’ (spreading the yolk on toast), and even using the yolk as a pouring sauce. 30

41% of Brits eat their soft boiled egg in an egg cup; dipping ‘soldiers’ of any kind (toast, asparagus, bacon etc). Th is way of egg-eating shows stability and convention. most people learn to eat boiled eggs this way and some never feel the need to change tradition. a fi fth of Brits eat their egg in an egg cup; scooping out the egg with a teaspoon. Th is is no nonsense approach to eggs that’s bound to be reflected in other parts of their lives. no accompaniments, no stopping to savour, just doing what needs to be done. nearly a quarter of Brits eat their soft boiled egg from the wide, bottom side as opposed to the traditional pointy, narrow end. Those who turn their egg on its head probably approach lots of things in their lives differently. They’re likely to reject what doesn’t work for them and seek more of what they enjoy. one fi fth of people prefer to shell their soft boiled egg and eat it on toast. a degree of practicality features within those who shell their eggs. They also have a lovely sense of humour. The trend towards traditional hen eggs comes at a time when egg consumption is booming as a result of recognised nutrition and health benefi ts, versatility, baking and a shift toward ‘brunch’ dates with friends. in the week of easter alone, over 100million individual eggs were estimated to have been consumed.

for the past decade daniel has been working in the publishing industry as a graphic designer and professional photographer. although immersed in the creative industry daniel has always yearned for a more expressive creative release. Back in the spring of 2016 he began working on a series of stunning paintings from his garden studio in portsmouth. inspired by his experiences, surroundings and travels, daniel’s vivid acrylic paintings - created using household tools, knives and brushes with splatter effects - evoke a sense of energy and drama while bursting to life with colour and fast broad strokes. after exhibiting his paintings for the first time at the emsworth arts trail earlier this spring daniel is now excited about the future and is looking forward to exhibiting more throughout the year. daniel is already selling his original works and has received rapturous reviews from fellow artists and collectors.

Working with paint on canvas is just the beginning for Daniel and his talent for creating original artworks in a variety of materials is developing, including soft pastel. The fun loose sketches below are perhaps a taste of things to come.

In a market saturated with incredible work, Daniel really hopes to stand out from the crowd and is keen to see his work enjoyed by everyone.

Accept Responsibility

Do What You Love

one crucial factor in being successful in the workplace is to ‘own’ your career. That means accepting responsibility noW for where you are, acknowledging the previous success achieved and shortfalls. it means being honest with your boss if you’ve been passed over for that important promotion, and asking yourself where you could add value in your current role.

of course it sounds like a cliché, but for good reason. it doesn’t matter if you’re earning a six figure salary, or have a company car, if you have no passion for what you do it will reflect in your daily work. money is of course important, but it’s not the only factor when looking for a new job.

it could be simply delegating your workload, renegotiating your terms of references, or volunteering for higher profile jobs that will put you back in the spotlight. By stepping out of your comfort zone, and banishing the negative thoughts you can empower yourself to seize new opportunities when they arise, and take charge of your career to get it back on track.

people that love what they do are exciting to be around, have drive and vision and achieve their goals. picture your dream job, what does it look like? What qualifications are needed, what personal qualities? make a list of previous success stories, what personal attributes did you bring to the mix? How did it make you feel? do you prefer working on your own to strict deadlines, or are you better placed in a more informal team environment?

However if staying in your current job fills you with dread, and you don’t see a future in the company then it’s time to take action.

answers to these questions will start to form the basis of what you need to achieve to get one step closer to your dream job.

Dressed For Success

FEATURING OVER 20 BANDS

We don’t often think of ourselves as a brand, but unconsciously we put across a message to the world in our daily lives. We are a walking advertisement for all we are and do. first impressions obviously count in the interview room, but equally matter when job hunting, and networking. you should always dress for your next job, which sounds superficial but the way you conduct yourself speaks volumes for future employers. regardless of whether or not you have a killer cv, the way you conduct yourself and the way you wear your clothes do matter. ensure you have a freshly pressed suit or dress at hand ready to put on for a job fair, walk with confidence into meetings, and people will start taking notice. remember that prospective bosses will not only assess whether you’re suitable for a job, but whether they can picture you fi tting into their company environment.

Supercharge your CV now you know the direction you’re heading in, you need to fine tune the one document that will get your first foot in the door, the cv or curriculum vitae. many people make the mistake of listing pages of all their achievements, or use the same cv to apply to multiple jobs. The cv should be treated as a brief appraisal of your career to date, should be no more than two sides of a4, and should be tailored to each individual job application. in other words if you’re applying for a role that’s customer service focused, you need to highlight more experience you’ve had relating to customer service. it sounds obvious but is often over looked. likewise listing every single gcse you achieved twenty years previous is not necessary, as your more recent diplomas or qualifications carry more weight. a recruiter will spend less than 90 seconds skim reading your cv, focusing on key words or phrases that are linked to the job requirement. so keep it relevant, avoid the use of acronyms and remember if they require further information they can ask for it...at the job interview! good luck.

KIA Niro

four wheel

The Kia niro combines a practical, family-oriented crossover body style with an efficient hi-tech hybrid system. What impresses most is the simple and unobtrusive way that the niro makes hybrid motoring feel so ‘normal’. its conventional body shape, un-fl ashy styling, efficient 1.6-litre petrol engine and dual-clutch automatic gearbox all combine to make it feel more contemporary from behind the wheel than many rivals. entry-level models offer 74mpg and co2 emissions of 88g/km. The Kia niro is quiet, quite refined and decent to drive, plus it comes with Kia’s industry-leading seven-year/100,000-mile warranty. Between £21,295–£24,695.

future

They’re lean, green and some are even a bit mean! We round up some of the best hybrid cars on the market.

Written By waYne gorreT

Audi A3 Sportback e-tron

Suzuki Ignis nobody does small cars like suzuki and the new ignis is a welcome breath of fresh air in a cluttered city car segment. distinctive ‘mini-me’ crossover styling, deceptively spacious interior and a very likeable drive make this latest suzuki urbanite a certain winner. The ‘smart Hybrid vehicle by suzuki’ (sHvs) mild hybrid system is so good, that aside from a little energy flow graphic in the instrument cluster, you’ll never know it was there. co2 emissions are just 97g/km and 65.7mpg should be achievable. The top-spec sz5 model has all the toys, too! Just £13,000. 36

Spring/Summer 2017

The audi a3 sportback ‘e-tron’ plug-in hybrid uses pretty much the same system found in the volkswagen golf gte, with a combined total of 201bhp from its 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and electric motor. official figures suggest you should get around 30 miles of electric-only driving, which means the a3 e-tron is rated at 176mpg with co2 emissions of 37g/km. The combined power units are certainly effective, offering near hot-hatch levels of performance, but the relatively high purchase price (even with the £2,500 government grant taken away) could put some people off. from £35,930.

Advertise with us, call 023 9229 4408

Volkswagen Golf GTE The plug-in hybrid volkswagen golf gte makes good sense. it combines a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and home-charged batteries. vW says this means a maximum electric-only range of about 31 miles and a claimed 166mpg. in reality, you’re unlikely to see anywhere near those numbers in everyday driving, but official co2 emissions are a remarkable 35g/km. its handling is dulled by heavy batteries and performance is fair rather than brisk. But it’s refined and comfortable on the motorway, feeling just like a normal golf most of the time. from £33,995 (gte 1.4 pHev 5dr dsg).

BMW i3 REx There are two versions of the i3 – a fully electric vehicle with a range of between 80 and 125 miles and this range-extending (rex) hybrid, which offers a range of around 210 miles. it deploys a small petrol engine that operates an on-board electricity generator to top up the underfloor batteries, rather than power the wheels. The car’s co2 emissions are a mere 13g/km, residual values are strong and the BmW i3 rex won’t cost you much to run. it has distinctive looks, is good fun to drive and is full of clever features. from £32,590.

Lexus CT 200h lexus no longer offers diesel powered cars. The luxury arm of toyota has long advocated the merits of hybrids over diesels and the ct 200h is the starter model in its current uK range. The interior is solidly built using high-quality materials, but the ride isn’t quite as comfortable as the lexus badge infers. one thing the ct does deliver, however, is low running costs. it’s claimed to be capable of 74.3mpg and co2 emissions of only 82g/km. it also sits in an impressively low 15% BiK company-car tax bracket, making it sorely tempting for company-car drivers. * from £22,495.

Hyundai Ioniq hybrid The ioniq is Hyundai’s triple-whammy; this is the first car to be available to order as a conventional hybrid, a plug-in hybrid or a fully electric vehicle. Here, we look at the impressive hybrid, returning around 83mpg, with co2 emissions of 79g/km. it is powered by a 104bhp, 1.6-litre petrol engine and paired with a 43bhp electric motor. attractively priced, the ioniq hybrid is pretty good to drive, too, with the gearbox being a particular highlight. inside, it feels much like a latter-day Hyundai which is no bad thing, is well equipped and a good bit cheaper than its toyota prius rival. from £19,995.

Swollen ankles Have you noticed that your ankles are looking puffy, but just put it down to being on your feet all day? This could be a sign of odema, which means you have an excess of watery fluid collecting in the body. Cramps

Pitted toenails

do you often suffer from cramps? They have a habit of flaring up at the worst times from trying on a new pair of shoes, to when you’re in a nice deep sleep! Think you’re just dehydrated and need to drink more water? This might be the case, or it could symbolise that you’re deficient in magnesium, calcium or potassium.

Have you noticed that you have pitted toenails, but just thought it was ‘one of those things?’ This could in fact be a sign of psoriasis, a common chronic condition of the skin.

try taking a magnesium supplement in the evening, which may help to prevent cramps and improve sleep. try natures plus Kalmassure magnesium powder (£24.50, naturesplus.co.uk). calcium is found in dairy products but don’t forget that you can also get enough calcium from dark green leafy vegetables, like broccoli, fish with bones, tofu, nuts, seeds and oranges. vitamin d is necessary for healthy bones because it increases calcium absorption. much of our vitamin d is synthesised in our skin on exposure to sunlight - however we may also need additional supplies in our diet. dietary traces of vitamin d include: avocado, egg yolks, butter and fish oil.

Cold feet ice cold tootsies? if you feel like your feet are cold all the time, it could be that your thyroid is not working properly, and therefore it may not be producing enough hormones to regulate your metabolism. a side effect of this condition can be that your body’s ability to generate heat is affected and that’s why your hands and feet may always be cold. to help keep your feet toasty, make sure you choose the right socks. during the winter months our extremities, such as our feet tend to suffer the most from the cold. it’s really important to keep your feet well insulated during this time. unfortunately woolly socks may keep our feet warm, but they tend to make our feet sweat more. for toasty, fresh feet this i would recommend carnation footcare’s silversocks (from £10, firstaidfast.co.uk). silversocks are made with pure silver threads. These unique fibres act as a natural heat thermostat, regulating foot temperature and helping to keep toes toasty when the temperature drops. The silver will not wash out or lose its thermal and antibacterial properties over time, so will keep your feet warm. 40

if you’re suffering from psoriasis, keep your skin nourished and hydrated the natural way. Keeping the skin moist and nourished from the outside is crucial, as it can bring instant relief from itchiness and discomfort. However, emollient creams that are often recommended by doctors and pharmacists, rarely provide long-term relief. What’s more, they can even irritate already inflamed skin, as very often they contain chemicals, such as chlorocresol and cetearyl alcohol. instead, try a natural cream or balm, such as What skin needs skin Balm (www.whatskinneeds.co.uk, £13.99), which contains a blend of natural ingredients including plantolin, an extract from an australian indigenous plant. This powerful ingredient along with aloe vera extract and tea tree essential oil can help to manage skin conditions by reducing inflammation and oxidative damage. The formula as a whole is designed to reduce irritation, soothe and repair dry and damaged skin, explains nutritionist, cassandra Barns.

Extremely dry feet your feet may simply be dry from nonmoisturising soap, excessively hot showers or baths or from ageing, as in this process we naturally loose moisture in the skin. However, excessively dry skin could also be a sign of poor blood circulation due to peripheral arterial disease. The arteries harden as a result of plaque building up in them. your feet may also be trying to tell you that you are suffering from athletes foot. firstly, to help combat against dry skin, and to determine if there is actually another underlying issue, apply an emollient foot cream to the feet daily, for example carnation’s intensive moisturising foot cream (£3.45, firstaidfast.co.uk). research reports that callouses, corns, dry skin and heel skin fissures are less hydrated and less elastic than unaffected normal skin, so moisturising the skin daily restores hydration and elasticity reducing the build-up of skin conditions. i’d suggest then gently reducing hard skin before it develops into cracked and painful areas using carnation’s silky feet Hard skin remover (£12.49, firstaidfast.co.uk). if the hard skin becomes painful then consult with your doctor or podiatrist, explains michael ratcliffe, carnation footcare podiatrist.

blunders

Many of us are guilty, albeit subconciously, of expressing our true feelings when in conversation or within a group without actually speaking. It’s rarely intended or spiteful, but our actions could at times be misinterpreded as deliberate or cause an offense. Read on for a few tips on what to avoid. Is that the time?

Touching your face

glancing down at your watch, checking your phone, inspecting your fingernails or gazing around a room while talking with someone or while engaged in discussion can often mean ‘i’m bored’ and could be perceived as rude.

commonly interpreted as a sign of deception, touching your nose, scratching your head or breaking eye contact. These actions are more often than not subconscious, but try to keep your hands away from your face and retain natural eye contact when you’re talking.

Stroking your chin often a subconscious action we do while thinking or decision making, but be careful, it’s also been know to offend if done while staring at someone, sometimes interpreted as appearing ‘judgemental’.

Crossed arms crossing your arms may simply be a comfortable position or a way to keep warm, but when in the company of others crossed arms can signal a sense of defence or a lack of interest.

Slouch potato strong posture can be a sign of confidence and composure and can effect the way people behave around you. When greeting someone keep your shoulders back, your head up and have a stable grounding with your feet a comfortable distance apart.

Blinkety blink rapid blinking could be interpreted as a sign of anxiety or raised nerves. take deep breaths and try to relax if you find yourself doing this when meeting new people or when presented with an uncomfortable situation.

Fidgeting fiddling with your pen, toying with your coffee mug or playing with something in your hand are all additional signals to others that you’re nervous or unprepared.

Shifting weight moving your weight from foot to foot indicates discomfort and can be interpreted as eagerness to leave the conversation. avoid shifting your feet any more than once every couple of minutes, unless you’re desperate for the loo, in which case simply excuse yourself.

new reSearcH reVealS:

resveratrol could be the cure for pcos sufferers…

Did you know that resveratrol, a natural compound found in the likes of grapes and blueberries, could help women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)? This is according to a new study published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. So, wHaT iS pcoS? pcos is a hormonal imbalance that affects 5 to 10 per cent of women of reproductive age across the world, and results in irregular or absent periods, acne, excess body hair and weight gain. it’s also a major cause of infertility and yet is frequently misdiagnosed and often missed completely. pcos gets its name because under an ultrasound scan, the ovaries can look like a bunch of grapes, each one covered in what look like multiple cysts. in fact, these aren’t cysts at all, but are small, undeveloped follicles. pcos creates a vicious cycle of hormone imbalances, which has huge knock-on effects throughout the rest of your body. With pcos, the problem often starts with the ovaries, which are unable to produce the hormones they should, and in the correct proportions. But linked to this is the very common problem of insulin resistance. Women with pcos very often have difficulties with 42

How can reSVeraTrol poSSiBlY Help wiTH pcoS? The study found that a nutritional supplement containing resveratrol could help moderate the hormone imbalance that is one of the central features of pcos. Women who have pcos produce slightly higher amounts of testosterone than average and the researchers found total testosterone levels fell by 23.1%, after the candidates took the resveratrol supplement. resveratrol can not only protect you from damaging free radicals, but it also boosts cell replication. try natures plus ageloss reJuvaBolic complex WHicH is pacKed full of resveratrol, vitamins, minerals and WHole foods. advice courtesy of nutritionist, cassandra Barns. naturesplus.co.uK

hangover

cures

Unless you’ve been under a rock for the last couple of weeks or so, you would have heard about the possibility that hangovers could soon be a thing of the past. That’s right – no more waking up feeling as though you’ve been hit by a ton of bricks! How, you may be asking? Well, professor david nutt is setting out to create a an alcohol substitute which gives you the ‘buzz’ you get from drinking alcohol, without the unsavoury side effects of a hangover the next day. sounds like the dream, right? unfortunately, it’s suggested that if this goes ahead it won’t be on our shelves until 2050. But don’t fret, with summer round the corner we’ve asked our experts for their top tips on how we can help beat a hangover, the natural way! 44

Spring/Summer 2017

So, firSTlY wHaT iS a HangoVer?

Most of us have experienced the pain and the frustration of a hangover. They’re a pain in the... well, head! Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning that once in your blood; your body needs to put its water supplies in your blood to dilute it. This creates an increase in blood volume and pressure. To bring your blood pressure down, we then need to excrete the water down the toilet. The problem being, now our cells are lacking the water that they need. Our brain is around 70% water, and dehydration can lead to brain shrinkage, which is what causes the pain. Your body also has to deal with a mountain of alcohol toxins. They all need processing and excreting, which puts strain on your liver and kidneys.

Advertise with us, call 023 9229 4408

10 TrickS To Hack Your HangoVer Soothe your head considering what a hangover is, water seems like the obvious cure, however not all water is equal. The control of hydration is in the hands of electrolytes. electrolytes are minerals found in water. for your best chance of beating that hangover, choose mineral rich water or add in some extra electrolytes. They’re designed for athletes and sports people. The water will also help to flush out the toxins, speeding up the detoxification process. drink a large glass of mineral rich water before bed, take a glass to bed and be sure to drink plenty in the morning.

Avoid sugar Before, during and after drinking it’s best to avoid sugary foods and drinks, as alcohol consumption tends to play havoc with energy and blood sugar control. it’s better to focus on protein and unrefined carbohydrates, which release glucose slowly. say no to caffeine and spicy food that can not only worsen the dehydration, but also irritate your stomach.

Bite before bed

Go for a run sounds crazy? The movement will get your blood circulating and will help speed up detoxification, while the sweating will help you excrete the toxins. it will however add to your dehydration. ensure that you drink plenty of hydrating fluids before, during and after your run.

Downward dog The movement from the likes of yoga and pilates will help to increase blood flow to all parts of your body, but importantly, your liver. The more blood that passes through, the quicker your liver can detoxify the alcohol. The sweating will help to eliminate the toxins through your skin. However the sweating can make the problem of dehydration worse, so ensure that you drink plenty of water at the same time! focused breathing is an important aspect of pilates and can help with any nausea you may be feeling, while also being a great way to take your mind off your hangover! anyone who does pilates regularly will recognise the moment, a few minutes into a session, when you get an overwhelming sense of release and calm, and, dare i say it, even joy. as your breathing deepens and settles into its rhythm, as your spine lengthens and unravels, as your deep core muscles connect and your limbs stretch out, mind and body unite and you suddenly feel in control. The world seems to be a better place. it’s almost addictive, which might explain why classes have waiting lists.

try to eat something before you go to bed, this doesn’t mean grabbing a doner kebab on the way home! Having something nourishing to eat before going to bed will help give you the nutrition that your body needs to detoxify. getting drunk is taxing so something healthy will go a long way to support your recovery. stay away from foods that contain high levels of unhealthy fats. These include fried foods, foods that contain hydrogenated fats (found mainly in margarines and processed foods), and poor quality, cheap cooking oils. The liver has to work extra hard to process these types of fats, when it’s already under strain dealing with the alcohol and its breakdown products. unhealthy fats can also worsen any infl ammation in the body, which can add to the effects of the infl ammatory cytokines that could contribute to hangover symptoms.

Spring/Summer 2017

Get fruity! The water and mineral content of fruit will help to rehydrate you and put an end to your hangover headache. There is an enzyme in pears that scientists are investigating for its ability to help us metabolize alcohol, and prevent us from having a hangover. if you’re going to eat fruit, it makes sense to choose a pear! if you’re not a big fan of pears, go for berries. They’re rich in antioxidants and offer protection from free radicals, which are considered another cause of hangovers.

Bone broth if you make your own broth or stock at home using animal bones, vegetables and a pinch or two of sea salt, you could do worse than drinking a cup or two of this the morning after. Bone broth contains lots of minerals that are naturally released from the bones during cooking – and these, together with the salt, could help to fight fatigue and boost your energy levels. The amino acids it contains can help to soothe the gut lining too.

Activated charcoal it’s actually used in the treatment of some kinds of poisoning, because it absorbs toxins and helps them to be removed from the body. However, it would make sense to take the charcoal during or shortly after drinking alcohol rather than the next morning, as it binds toxins in the gut before they can be absorbed.

Pickle jar yes, you’ve heard us right. The vinegar could be stimulating the liver to help detoxify and eliminate the alcohol. When pickles ferment, they also produce a certain type of soothing bacteria to help with irritated stomach.

Mend with magnesium magnesium can be depleted by alcohol and many of us are already deficient in this nutrient. try adding magnesium rich foods into your diet, such as leafy green vegetables. magnesium and vitamin c both support the alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme that breaks down alcohol and eliminates it from the body, helping you to feel more refreshed. advice courtesy of sHona WilKinson, nutritionist at superfooduK.com, dr marilyn glenville, nutritionist and autHor of natural alternatives to sugar WWW.marilynglenville.com and nutritionist cassandra Barns.

Sometimes when the opportunity arises to sample the products and services of fantastic organisations like La Belle Assiette it’s difficult to decline. The wonderful Paul Congdon kindly cooked for me and my chums a few weeks back. An experience I am whole-heartedly looking forward to repeating. Highly recommended. 
