COVID-19 MANAGEMENT

We are looking forward to seeing you (from 2 metres away)! The health and safety of our facility users and staff is our top priority. All programs, events and services will run in compliance with current Provincial and Regional Health Department guidelines and regulations. All programs and services are subject to change. Here is what we are doing to keep everyone safe: Limited access into the building to those who are there to participate in an activity and one companion where permitted.

A greeter will be at the main doors of our facilities to ensure patrons entering are registered for an activity/permit and to conduct a health screening.

Signage, markers, arrows and alternate exits throughout the buildings to help direct users, encourage physical distancing, and maintain one-way traffic where possible. Limited use of changerooms. Hand sanitizer stations throughout the buildings.

Pre-registration will be required for all participation. This includes activities that were previously “drop-in” in nature such as lane swim, fitness classes, leisure skate, etc. More details are throughout this guide.

A preliminary health screening questionnaire will be required when a participant pre-registers for an activity.

Customer service counters will have plexiglass barriers.

Every person entering the facility must wear a mask as per York Region’s guidelines. Exceptions apply when participating in a physical activity. Facility cleaning and sanitization will take place frequently, especially for high touch areas and shared equipment.

Note: We reserve the right to cancel, amend or change activities. Programs may transfer locations virtually to Zoom. Community Services Program Guide | Winter 2021

MAYOR & COUNCIL

MAYOR’S MESSAGE Welcome to the Winter 2021 Program Guide The 2021 Winter Program Guide is your source of information about community activities and programs such as swimming, fitness and recreation classes. The current COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we offer classes during this winter term. In efforts to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus, Town facilities and staff will be following provincial guidelines to ensure the health and safety of our patrons. Our staff has also found new, innovative ways to deliver special events while still providing memorable experiences for families. Check out aurora.ca/specialevents to see what community events are coming up! You can still enjoy the outdoors! Discover the many parks and trails around Town. Our trail system spans over 62 kilometres encompassing more than 800 acres and are considered multi-use, with a primary focus on pedestrian hikers. Coming soon! The first phase of the David Tomlinson Nature Reserve is underway. Work includes trail construction, boardwalks, fencing and planting of trees and shrubs. The first phase of the park is scheduled to open by the end of 2020.

AURORA MUSEUM & ARCHIVES Enjoy a Movie Night and Explore Aurora’s Fascinating History! Over the past year, the Aurora Museum & Archives has produced three short films that take the audience on a journey throughout various chapters of Aurora’s history. Pop some popcorn, and enjoy one, two or all three of these incredible films by visiting www.auroramuseum.ca

The Temple of Fame

This film was created using footage from the theatrical production of the performance that took place in Aurora on May 11 to 13, 2018. The Temple of Fame was a popular play that was performed in Aurora in 1900 and 1918. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 1918 performance, the Temple of Fame was re-staged in 2018 and performed by a talented group of local actors and musicians.

Swift and Bold: The Queen’s York Rangers

This important chapter of Aurora’s ongoing story has been brought to life in a short documentary that takes the audience on a journey from the Regiment’s 18th Century foundation through to modern times.

Aurora Canada’s Birthday Town

You may have heard that Aurora is Canada’s Birthday Town, but do you know how that designation came to be? Watch this short film to discover how Aurora was ahead of its time in celebrating July 1st!

In preparation for the Library Square development, the Aurora Museum & Archives is now located on the third floor of Aurora Town Hall. Reach out for a visit or a chat – we are always interested in your story. www.auroramuseum.ca

What to Expect when Returning to Aquatic Leadership Courses during COVID-19

The Town of Aurora will be providing Aquatic Leadership courses in a blended-learning format. Participants: • Will gain lifesaving knowledge and participate in discussions in a virtual setting with an Instructor. • Will participate during the in-person session to gain technical skills and to complete their summative evaluation. Training Modifications: • Where possible, Instructors will minimize the interaction between participants in the course by organizing participants into fixed training groups throughout the course. • If there are low participant numbers in the course, the Instructor may adopt the Lifesaving Society’s position of using a household member or social circle. • The Town recognizes that due to the nature of Aquatic Leadership courses, there are certain evaluation items where maintaining physical distancing and the fixed training group model is not feasible.

INCLUSION SERVICES

INCLUSION SERVICES

This is accomplished through specialized programming, individualized support options and accessible facilities for patrons with disabilities or unique needs. Service animals are welcome at all Town owned and operated facilities.

www.aurora.ca/ inclusionservices

Participants require additional support if: • They have extra support at school or at home; • A physical, medical, or developmental/learning disability exists that affects the safety of others; • Extra support is required at home for basic care such as dressing and toileting; • The individual is currently associated with a support agency or program; or • There are challenging behaviours to be managed.

Additional Support Participants with disabilities and unique needs are encouraged to take part in year-round recreation programs that suit their interests and hobbies. If assistance is required outside of the typical staff to participant ratio, individuals have the following options: • 1:1 Town Support Staff - Inclusion 1:1 support staff are available to facilitate participation in all Town of Aurora recreation programs. A support staff comes at an additional cost, and may provide redirection for safety reasons, allow opportunities for sensory or emotional breaks, and assist with personal care provided that it can be facilitated by one person. Upon request, the Town of Aurora will do their best to arrange a 1:1 support staff for a participant based on availability and resources, however this is never guaranteed. It is encouraged that families reach out to Inclusion Services at least two weeks prior to the program start to ensure a 1:1 support staff can be arranged. • External Support Workers - The Town of Aurora welcomes external personal support workers into all our programs and drop-ins at no additional registration costs. An external support worker can include a parent, family member, or paid external staff member at the expense of the family.

ADAPTED OPPORTUNITIES The Town of Aurora offers specialized programs specifically designed for participants with special needs. These adapted programs have smaller staff to participant ratios, modified instruction, and an overall more sensory aware environment.

PARKS & TRAILS PEDESTRIAN TRAIL SYSTEM The Town of Aurora is fortunate to have an extensive pedestrian trail system which connects many of its neighbourhood parks, Town facilities and open space corridors. Presently the Town maintains approximately 62 kilometers of trails. All Aurora trails are considered multi-use, with the primary focus being pedestrian hikers. Opportunities also exist for cross-country skiers. The majority of our trails are compact gravel surfaces with some asphalt sections through neighbourhood and community parks. All users are advised to respect other trail users, to stay on designated trails and to exercise caution at all times. Note: Our trails are not groomed or maintained during winter months, and conditions vary widely. Surface conditions can change dramatically during the winter to create potentially hazardous hiking and skiing conditions. OUTDOOR WINTER SKATING The Town currently constructs four outdoor ice skating rinks within our neighbourhood parks. These are located at Town Park, Confederation Park, Machell Park and Ada Johnson Park. The ice rinks consists of a natural surface and are weather permitting, with construction typically taking place in the early New Year. All rinks are lit for evening skating and are mixed use; with hockey and pleasure skating taking place on the same rink. We ask users to respect others and wear protective gear at all times while on the ice. Note: Please check the Town of Aurora’s website for regular updates, due to changing COVID-19 regulations. TOBOGGANING Due to the undulating topography in the Town, it is common for residents to utilize non-designated areas for tobogganing. The Town does not recommend using these areas as dangers are prevalent. Tobogganing is permitted in the following dedicated areas: Fleury Park (south of Aurora Heights Dr. and the ACC parking lot), Machell Park (north of the parking area on the west side of the park), AFLC Lambert Willson Park (along the east side of the building) and Copland Park (along the north side of the park). Tobogganers are reminded that these designated locations are unsupervised by the Town and surface areas can vary widely with ice and other hazardous conditions. All tobogganers using these facilities do so at their own risk. Children should be supervised by an adult and all participants should use appropriate safety equipment. Note: Please check the Town of Aurora’s website for regular updates, due to changing COVID-19 regulations. PARK BENCH DONATION PROGRAM In response to requests from our residents who are regular users of our parks and trails, the Operational Services Department is pleased to provide a Park Bench Donation Program. You can be part of the program and partner with the Parks Division in donating a park bench, with a personalized message of your choice which will be adhered to the bench. Your bench will be installed in a location of your choice in our parks or trails system and our staff will ensure that your bench receives the care and maintenance it deserves for years to come. Our Park Bench Donation Program would make a great gift for that special person who is hard to buy for and will truly be a gift that keeps on giving to all of those in need of a place to rest in our parks and along our trail system. For more information on the Park Bench Donation Program, please visit the Town of Aurora website. Note: This program is currently on-hold; we are not accepting any new applications until Spring of 2021.

MEMORIAL TREE PROGRAM The Town of Aurora has a Memorial Tree Planting policy to enable the planting or designation of memorial trees on municipal lands within the Town. For more information on the Memorial Tree Planting Policy, please visit the Town of Aurora website. Note: This program is currently on-hold; we are not accepting any new applications until Spring of 2021. AURORA ADOPT-A-PARK IS YOUR CHANCE TO GROW WITH THE COMMUNITY Over 700 acres of Parkland, an outstanding Trail System and friendly tree-lined streets contribute to Aurora’s natural beauty and make it a place we are proud to call home. Did you know that the Adopt-A-Park program provides local businesses, community groups and residents with the opportunity to enhance the environment and beautify our town by assisting with the maintenance and developement of Aurora’s parks and trail systems? Adopt-A-Park continues to: • Create opportunities for citizens to support our parks and green spaces. • Share the responsibility for a clean community. • Develop opportunities for youth involvement. • Build community pride and a sense of ownership in our parklands. Including tree and shrub plantings, there are a number of ways for individuals, interested groups and organizations to become involved in this exciting program. Please contact the Parks Division at 905-727-3123 ext. 3233 for further information or email cwright@aurora.ca.
