FRIENDSHIP VILLAGE PARC PROVENCE A very happy birthday to Genevieve Turner! The Parc Provence resident recently turned 108. Turner was born on Jan. 24, 1914, in Mount Morris, Illinois, and grew up in Webster Groves. She attended Beloit College in Wisconsin, where she received a bachelors in English and was part of the Kappa Delta sorority—she received more than 100 birthday cards from sorority sisters. She earned a masters from Northwestern University and worked as a teacher in the Special School District. Turner lived at home until she was 104 and enjoys spending time outside, listening to music, watching the news and reading. She also is part of Parc Provence’s book, bridge and gardening clubs.

The senior living community is using technology to keep resident and at-home care patients active and independent longer. It introduced Alexa-based SmartCompanion, a virtual assistant that’s directly integrated in Friendship Village’s communication systems. The system offers seniors hands-free access to phone and video calling, 24/7 emergency response, daily reminders, entertainment and more. The technology can be personalized to meet an individual’s needs, including engaging seniors with visual impairments or reduced mobility. Technology like this is crucial in the aftermath of the pandemic. AARP reports that there has been a 26% uptick in early deaths related to social isolation, and smart speakers have been found to help seniors with memory, mobility and more.
