STUDENT STANDOUTS by stephanie wallace

OWEN HANFORD OF CHAMINADE COLLEGE PREPARATORY SCHOOL HIGH SCHOOL CAN BE AN EXCITING time to explore interests. For Owen Hanford, a freshman at Chaminade, that means getting to spend more time on stage. He’s been treading the boards since elementary school, and now, he’s looking forward to expanding his horizons not only as a performer, but also as a student. How did you get involved in theater? I started when I was 6 years old. My sister was a Muny kid, and one year, they were looking for a boy to be in Billy Elliot. They asked performers if they had younger siblings, and I just happened to fit the role. I’ve been very involved in The Muny and other organizations ever since.

Are you involved in the behind–the-scenes aspects of production? So far, my involvement has only been on stage, but I think it’s so important to see and understand the other side. This year, I want to get as involved behind the scenes as I have been in performing.

What is your favorite part of performing? I enjoy being able to be someone else on stage. When performing, you can be whoever you want to be. I also like the relationship you create with the audience. You make people laugh and cry. I have the ability to develop an emotional connection I never thought I would, and I enjoy that so much.

How has your freshman year been? It has been good. It’s very different from middle school. It’s a lot more chaotic, and I don’t have as much free time to do things as I used to, but I’m glad to get to learn from such great teachers and enhance my capabilities at Chaminade. I’m excited to try out other extracurriculars. I’m also looking forward to meeting new people through the theater program.

Do you have any favorite performances? My favorite show I’ve been a part of is definitely Matilda at The Muny. I played Bruce, and it was so much fun. I was in sixth grade, playing a kindergartener, so I got to go back to my childish roots for the role.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? When I have free time, I like to hang out with friends, and I also enjoy swimming.
