COVER STORY

PEDAL THE CAUSE

by stephanie wallace CANCER CAN STRIKE AT ANY TIME. That’s something the Darnells of Du Quoin,

Illinois, understand all too well. In December 2020, just days before Christmas, high school junior Addi woke up with a sore neck. After a day spent celebrating with family, the Darnells were shocked to discover that Addi had developed a large mass on her collarbone. They rushed her to the emergency room, and after receiving a CAT scan, she was taken in a mobile ICU to St. Louis Children’s Hospital in the early hours of the morning. The next day, she was diagnosed with advanced stage 3a bulky Hodgkin’s lymphoma. “Being admitted to the hospital is one of the scariest times of your life, but everyone at St. Louis Children’s treated me like a normal kid,” Addi says. “They made sure I understood everything and cared about my feelings.” The team at St. Louis Children’s Hospital was able to quickly get Addi enrolled in a clinical trial. After surgery and 12 rounds of chemotherapy, she was declared cancer free in July of 2021. Clinical trials like the one that helped save Addi’s life are made possible through donations and community support. Since its inception in 2010, Pedal the Cause has raised more than $36,263,645 to fund 188 cancer research projects at Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. The Darnells were familiar with Pedal the Cause before Addi’s diagnosis. Both her parents, Lindsay and Andrew, are advisers with Edward Jones, the event’s presenting sponsor. “We had donated in the past because it’s a great cause, but now it is more than that,” Lindsay explains. “With Pedal the Cause, you know that 100% of the money you donate is going to support cancer research. A clinical trial worked for Addi, but that’s not always the case.” Jordan Gutierrez, one of the friends Addi made while staying at St. Louis Children’s, passed away. The Darnells are dedicated to

raising the money to fund a clinical trial in Addi’s honor and Jordan’s memory to help ensure every child can beat pediatric cancer. This year’s Pedal the Cause is Sept. 23 to 25 in Chesterfield. The Darnells are looking forward to many different parts of the event. “I’m a total foodie, so I always love getting to see the best foods that St. Louis has to offer at Taste the Cause,” Addi says. “I’m also looking forward to the connections that we get to make with so many great people who have been touched by cancer.” Lindsay adds, “It’s always such a great weekend. It’s energizing and fun, and everyone works together to make a difference.” In the fall, Addi will be attending the University of Mississippi. With all of the excitement of preparing for this next stage of her daughter’s life, Lindsay can’t help but reflect on how close they came to missing it. “These are things normal teenagers and their parents take for granted,” she says. “For Addi, they are that much sweeter because they were almost taken away in an instant. It’s thanks to the cancer research at Siteman that we’ve been given them back. After 18 months, it’s like a dark cloud has been lifted, and it wouldn’t be possible without Pedal the Cause.” & FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO REGISTER OR DONATE, VISIT PEDALTHECAUSE.ORG.

Once upon a time, somebody exclaimed, “Hey, this funky-looking plant smells heavenly once it’s dried. Why not rake a whole bunch of leaves into a pile, set it on fire and deeply inhale all the smoke?” We’re talking about tobacco, not hemp. Nicotine is so addictive, most smokers have hella time quitting because after a few minutes or hours, they crave another cigarette. They quit dozens of times a day, but can’t stay quit. About a decade ago some smart alecks introduced ‘e-cigs’— electronic doodads that deliver nicotine via water vapor. They’re supposed to help smokers taper off, but folks who say they want to quit seem to vape all the time.

Since we’ve been simmering awhile and may go into a rolling boil in all this beastly heat, we’d thought that the freshly tuckpointed brick wall in DeMun awaiting its Big Bee mural might only be half primed by Robert Fishbone and his daughter Liza. But it’s not plain red brick anymore. Its pastel tones are striking, adapted somewhat from the rendering we published in our June 22 issue. The Fishbones are climbing the scaffolding very early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the blistering heat dome, or whatever term the TV weatherperson uses to describe global warming this week. The creative process is a sight to behold, and we’re all welcome to visit the relatively cool, shaded neighborhood along DeMun Avenue north of Clayton Road to do just that. The awe-inspiring wall faces a recently upgraded playground, where there’s a water sprayer/mister for overheated kids. And adults. There’s also a Clementine’s Creamery nearby, 730 DeMun. Meanwhile, as you chill, don’t just sit there and watch the paint dry. Consider supporting the project, which is being funded through Clayton Community Foundation, with our support: claytoncommunityfoundation.org/projects/art. Scroll halfway down the webpage to ‘DeMun Park Mural’ for a little historical perspective and more details about the area, along with specific donation instructions. Then plan to take some epic selfies in the not-too-distant future.

Names have been changed to respect privacy. Miel Sloane has lived for years with her son Iluka’s mental illness: severe obsessive-compulsive disorder complicated by ADHD, anxiety and depression with suicidal thoughts. Now 18, Iluka will soon be off to college to study fashion design. A while back, however, Miel’s insurance company denied Iluka a recommended extended residential treatment, and he was sent home early. During a reading at UrbArts, Miel followed a poet and an a cappella gospel singer to present a passage from Mother Matter, the book she is writing about their ordeal at the hands of the health care system. “The Letter” addresses a nameless insurance company doctor who essentially rubber-stamped Iluka’s denial. Her presentation was timely. Acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns’ recent documentary, Hiding in Plain Sight: Youth Mental Illness, aired last month on PBS. Miel has yet to watch more than the trailer. “I’ve no doubt it will resonate and bring me to tears,” she says. Burns says awareness of mental health has been surging after years of our shared COVID-19 trauma, with particular concerns about the young. Miel’s intensive research, including many peer-reviewed articles, has her convinced. “We are in a serious mental health pandemic, with a dearth of psychiatrists, therapists, nurses and facilities.” Iluka says he feels like the rug was pulled out from underneath. As Miel writes to the anonymous doctor, “since you never met my son in the three appeals on his behalf, I offer you a snapshot of the human being he is …” She recounts anecdotes about his compassion for animals, starting as a toddler, and as a teen for other people enduring painful challenges themselves. The last portion of the passage is devastating, as Iluka describes his feelings upon having to return home early. “It was like surgery. They cut me open from collarbone to navel. They started to operate and then sent me home without sewing me up. I trusted them. I shouldn’t have.” Miel remains angry and frustrated. She hurts for Iluka and articulates her feelings through her writing. As a full-time academic, she’s not sure when she’ll be able to complete the book. But she notes, “The wealthy kids get the best care, the poor get nothing, and those of us in the middle hobble along.”

Vaping is now a $6 billion enterprise. The FDA, despite years of incessant industry lobbying, on June 23 finally banned Juul products, the hip e-cigs once preferred by teens. Trix are for kids; Juul is not. Brings to mind Joe Camel, the cartoon character who made Camel cigarettes so attractive to young folks. Eventually, Joe was ‘retired.’ Not all that long ago, Juul was unapologetically, aggressively hawking its products at concerts and parties via young influencers. Their e-cigs had higher, albeit synthetic—read: as yet unregulated—nicotine content and came in fruit and dessert flavors, not just menthol like traditional cigarettes. Used to be when I went to 7-Eleven for beer, teens would pop out between police cars in hopes of persuading me to buy theirs, too. Next time I visit Discount Smoke to buy a carton of Winston Lights for my stubborn, beloved wife, might there be kids lurking outside with a fistful of cash for Puff Bar e-cigs? No matter. I quit in 1985, and am now a rabid anti-smoker. Well, except for Cate.

WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR DEVELOPING JUUL, AND WHEN DID IT BEGIN SEDUCING UNDERAGE USERS?

LAST ISSUE’S Q&A What song was Pink Floyd’s only No. 1 on Billboard’s Top 40? This may come as somewhat of a surprise, classic-rock fans. Pink Floyd’s only No. 1 hit on Billboard’s Top 40 was not “Money,” the song that started with the sound of a cash register and played incessantly on the radio in the summer of 1973. The song only made it to No. 13. Maybe that’s not the song you thought made it to our Top of the Pops on this side of the pond, anyway. That would be “Another Brick in the Wall (Part II),” which held the top slot for four weeks in the winter of 1980.

anti Seth Ferr

Washington University Writer, film producer and director Seth Ferranti, 51, spent his lengthy sentence as a nonviolent drug offender in seven different prisons by getting an education; he earned an associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degree. He’d distributed LSD, was a most-wanted fugitive on the lam, met his future wife Diane, started his sentence in the early 1990s, was released in 2015 and married Diane, with whom he lives in the house where she grew up. And if that seems like a lot, we’re just getting started. With this dude, you pretty much need to get questions and comments out in one breath: Ferranti is a colorful character with whom it’s hard to get a word in edgewise. And man, does he have stories to tell, and be told about him: Ferranti has been featured in The Washington Post and Rolling Stone, has written articles for VICE and has plenty more to say from his time inside. This weekend you can see his docu-drama shot on the mean streets of North St. Louis, which will have its world premiere at WashU’s Brown Hall on Sunday at 7:30 p.m., as a centerpiece of St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase. Ferranti’s directorial debut, Night Life, is a full-length call to action focusing on the ministry of The Rev. Kenneth McKoy, known in the StL as the Pastor of the Streets. The mission of McKoy’s NightLIFE ministry

is to fight an epidemic of mental illness and drug addiction while actively interrupting the gun violence in our city, notorious as the murder capital of America. “He’s a roguish, but likable, character,” Ferranti says, with a smile. Many talk the talk, but Ken walks the walk. “His is a ministry of presence. He’s a ‘violence interrupter’ who steps in to solve problems.” And he goes where and when problems are most likely to escalate into violence—10 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. As an ex-con, Ferranti knows what it feels like to be marginalized, but he’s witnessed how much worse it is for a Black man. Over two years of filming, and more than 25 on-camera interviews, Ferranti did what he could to, in his words, “un-vilify” his subjects. And the social inequities infuriate him: “I find it ludicrous that an 11or 12-year-old kid feels they need to have a gun to protect themselves.” But throughout the experience, at the end of the day Ferranti thought the people he portrays still felt like their glass was half-full. And McKoy has an awesome presence. “We were threatened, chastised, ridiculed, and looked down upon. But being with The Rev. Kenneth

McKoy is like being with an angel,” notes Ferranti. “Yes, we filmed the poverty and homelessness, the drug addiction and drug dealers, the gang-bangers and prostitutes and the degradation of these communities.” He pauses for a moment, then adds: “But we also filmed the hope, love, consideration, caring and the lust for life and all things.” Information and tickets for the Showcase Premiere can be found at cinemastlouis.org/night-life. SOMETHING VERY ODD IS HAPPENING

to me. I can’t pinpoint when I first noticed it, but I can’t deny it’s happening. I’m too embarrassed to talk to my doctor or therapist about this, so, well, I thought I would share it with you in hopes that someone else is going through the same thing. I am a 62-year-old woman, and all of a sudden, my taste in things has completely changed. It is like I have reversed aged. Let me give you some examples. For years, my favorite music was provided by Little Feat, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones and Steely Dan. Oh sure, I liked John Mayer too, but when The Rolling Stones played in Chicago, I was there on the grounds of Soldier Field screaming like a schoolgirl—well, until they did the close-up of Mick. Let’s just say he has not aged well, but he still has the moves! I digress. Now, I find myself obsessed with Harry Styles, the kid who used to be in the boy band One Direction! I downloaded his new album to my iPhone. That’s only the second album I have ever downloaded! At a concert, he performed a duet with

Shaina Twain, and I have never ever wanted to be another person more than at that moment staring at the 28-year-old’s eyes. I have a boy crush! Then, there are my TV viewing habits. I’ve never watched an episode of The Crown or The Handmaid’s Tale. No, I have been too busy watching Outer Banks, a series about teenagers who seem to have an unusual amount of freedom and their escapades on the outer banks of North Carolina. But just to make sure I keep it real, I also watch The D’Amelio Show. Never heard of it, well, it follows the life of a family that relocates to Los Angeles so their daughters have more opportunities as content creators for TikTok. I don’t even have the TikTok app on my phone. My reading habits have also changed. I used to read The New York Times online everyday along with the local paper. I liked to know what was going on in the entire world. Now, my favorite source of information is The Daily Mail. Not familiar with this London based newspaper? It is gossip from around

the world. And not necessarily particularly accurate, I might add. I can tell you anything you want to know about the Royal family. Do you think this is a result of the COVID I had in January? I still read age-appropriate books, no young adult novels … yet! Also, the good news is I am not shopping at Forever 21 or Abercrombie & Fitch. So, I am a bit perplexed as to what is going on with me. I knew I would not age gracefully. In part, because I am not a very graceful person, but I had no idea I was going to revert back to having teenage tastes. There is one hope for me. When I was young, I was addicted to the Watergate Hearings. Seriously. I would plant my 12-year-old self in front of the TV and watch for hours. Maybe if I watch enough of the Jan. 6 hearings, it will shake me back into some sort of adult reality. If not, you will likely see me speeding around Clayton on my pink Vespa. Peace my Peeps.

the great outdoors

Outdoor retailer REI is opening a second location in the St. Louis area later this month. Located in Town and Country at 1214 Town and Country Crossing Drive, the new 23,000-square store sells clothing and gear for camping, cycling, fitness, hiking, paddling and other outdoor activities. The new location also will have a bike shop staffed by certified mechanics to adjust or repair equipment. To kick off the opening, the store will be hosting giveaways and an outdoor social July 22 to 24.

Beauty and body care brand Lavelier has opened a storefront in the Saint Louis Galleria. The brand’s skin care takes inspiration from the sea. It focuses on using red coral seaweed as an ingredient because it is rich in calcium and can help regulate the skin’s lipid barrier processes. The new store is located on the shopping center’s second floor near Nordstrom and across from Bath and Body Works.

New Orleans-based juice bar Main Squeeze bar has opened in the Central West End at 310 N. Euclid Ave. The store is the brand’s first Missouri location, owned and operated by St. Louisans Alex and Madison Kamakas. “While St. Louis has a steadily growing and diverse local food scene, the city is still underserved with quick, healthy options,” Alex says. “Main Squeeze certainly helps fill that void.” The juice bar’s nutritionist-designed menu features cold-pressed juices and superfood smoothies with both gluten-free and vegan options. It also offers juice cleanse programs and acai bowls.

Serendipity Homemade Ice Cream is all set to open its new location at 4400 Manchester Ave. Last December, owner Beckie Jacobs shuttered her longtime Webster Groves storefront, but she assured patrons the closure was temporary. The new shop ’s grand opening will be July 17—a fitting choice since it’s also National Ice Cream Day.

Last month, Eckert’s Farm opened two new attractions: Eckert’s Cider Shed and Mr. E’s Cider Donut & Custard Shop. The Cider Shed serves as a beer garden and lounge, while also offering space for concerts and private events. Along with featuring Eckert’s handcrafted hard ciders, it also will serve up beers, seasonal cocktails and a food menu designed for the space. Connected to Eckert’s Country Store, Mr. E’s Cider Donut & Custard Shop has taken over the former location of Eckert’s indoor cooking classroom. It is serving a variety of frozen custard, sundaes and baked goods that use the farm’s produce.

TOWN TALK

STUDENT STANDOUTS by stephanie wallace

KAREENA KANUMURY OF MICDS THIS FALL, Kareena Kanumury will be a senior at Mary Institute and County Day School. While she’s looking forward to graduation, she’s also focused on the big picture—like globally big, To help fight climate change, she developed a bio-based plastic that is accessible, affordable and biodegradable. Her project has competed regionally and internationally as part of the Genius Olympiad, and it also has received recognition from groups like the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and companies like Bayer and Ricoh. Where did your interest in science come from? I’ve always had an interest. At school, there are a lot of STEM-related activities, and I enjoy participating. My interest in science and math grew the more I got involved. In middle school, I did the science fair for the first time. I didn’t win anything, but I really liked the experience. Why is sustainability an important issue to you? I see a lot of my peers going toward medicine. That was my plan as well, but then, I started learning about environmental science. I realized just how big of an issue it is. You see companies making promises and launching green initiatives all the time. If we are surrounded by so many potential solutions, why aren’t they working and why are we still dealing with so many big issues? Tell me about your bioplastic. We’re facing a plastic crisis. It’s such a cheap, durable and versatile material, but it doesn’t degrade, so in the end, we’ll be drowning in plastic products. We do have bioplastics, which are degradable, but they release harmful chemicals into the environment. They offer a short-term solution but come with more long-term problems. I wanted to create something that could degrade safely while also being cheap enough to be a viable alternative. I started this project during the pandemic, so I had to turn my kitchen into a lab. I looked at using

ingredients you can find at the grocery store. I wanted to use commonly wasted foods because that is another big problem we’re facing. Bread ended up being a major component. I came up with a material that is more eco-friendly and cheaper than most bioplastics. What are the next steps for your project? I think it has the potential to be a really versatile product, so I want to pursue it further in college. Hopefully, I can eventually get it to the market. I also want to make sure it’s safe to consume for marine life since so much plastic ends up in the ocean. Ideally, it will decompose safely without harming any ecosystem. What are you looking forward to about senior year? I’m kind of looking forward to just reaching the finish line. I can’t wait to start the next chapter of my life. I want to enjoy those final memories of high school, graduation and all the traditions MICDS has. I can’t wait to pass the torch onto the next class. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I really love playing squash. I’m on my school’s team, and we’re very close, almost like a group of sisters. I’ve also done Indian classical dance for years. I’ll be graduating from that next year, too. It’s been such a great experience, getting to know my culture in a different way. I also love watching movies—I can’t wait for the next Marvel film!

CREATIVE VISION: Meet The Big Muddy Dance Company’s New Artistic Director by stephanie wallace

Martha Graham once said, “Dance is the hidden language of the soul.” Kirven Douthit-Boyd has dedicated himself to sharing that language with others through his art. After performing for 11 years with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, he’s been inspiring the next generation of dancers as the co-artistic director of dance at COCA. Now, he’s been selected to serve as the new artistic director of The Big Muddy Dance Company

CHARITY&CULTURE WHERE ARE YOU ORIGINALLY FROM? I was born and raised in Boston. I grew up dancing there and moved to New York right after high school to dance with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH DANCE? I grew up dancing. My mom has five sisters, so I was raised by some really incredible women. As soon as I could walk, they thought I should be doing something. They always kept me active and moving, and when I was five, they put me in my first dance class. DID YOU ALWAYS KNOW YOU WANTED TO DANCE PROFESSIONALLY? As far back as I can remember, I’ve had dance in my life, but I didn’t think of it as a professional option until I was in high school. I knew that I loved to move, but I didn’t know how to make it my career. I went to a performing arts high school, and in the spring of 1999, we were offered the chance to see the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater perform. I was transformed from that moment. I knew dance was what I was going to do with my life. WHY DO YOU THINK DANCE IS AN IMPACT ARTFORM? From an artistic perspective, there is obvious beauty of bodies in motion. Beyond that, movement speaks to people’s souls. Dance really has the ability to tell stories, and it works well in collaboration with other artforms. WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO ST. LOUIS? My husband, Antonio, is from St. Louis and grew up training at COCA. While we were in New York, he would still come home to help teach kids. I was blown away by St. Louis and also started helping train students at COCA every year.

KIRVEN DOUTHIT-BOYD

HOW HAS IT BEEN TRANSITIONING TO AN OFF-STAGE ROLE? Before we moved to St. Louis, I was at the point in my career that I was asking, “What’s next?” I was fortunate because I had experience doing outreach, so I knew that I had a passion for teaching and coaching. It really is an ideal situation. I can learn and grow in a completely different way. It’s been great to focus on nurturing the side of me that likes to educate others, and I enjoy bringing the love of dance to my students. HOW WERE YOU INTRODUCED TO THE BIG MUDDY DANCE COMPANY? I was introduced to Big Muddy’s founder Paula Daivd, and she asked me to create a work for the company. I've had a connection to The Big Muddy ever since, and I’ve gotten more involved in its creative development process, working as choreographer and stepping into the role of artistic curator. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE AS ARTISTIC DIRECTOR? The Big Muddy has become a staple of the St. Louis dance landscape. My goal is to ellevate not only the organization, but also the local artistic community. I want to grow our reputation and bring in some of the most notable dancemakers, while also establishing a space for new creations and local collaboration on every level. I just really want to make The Big Muddy something grand, so St. Louis can feel proud about it.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO FOR THE COMPANY'S NEW SEASON? I’m really excited about the creative team we’re building. I’ve brought in people from all different backgrounds. Making sure we spotlight diverse artists is something that is crucial for me. I’m really looking forward to bringing different perspectives to the St. Louis community. &

In July 2016, her daughter, Reese, was born, and at 9 months old, she began having tonic-clonic seizures. Throughout the first years of her life, Reese was diagnosed with multiple seizure types, and through genetic testing, it was discovered that she has a rare genetic mutation called CSNK2B, also known as POBINDS. Because there is so little known about Reese’s condition, it has caused high levels of stress and anxiety for Denise. She worries about all the unknowns of day-to-day life and what the future might hold for her daughter. While Reese was hospitalized at St. Louis Children’s Hospital last year, a social worker referred Denise to a mental health therapist funded through the June Jessee Memorial Foundation. This program provides free mental health services to help parents and caregivers support their mental wellbeing and provide positive benefits for the whole family. The dedicated therapist specializes in helping families of children like Reese with medically complex, neurological conditions. “You can feel very isolated while struggling with all of the unknowns of conditions like this,” Denise says. “Therapy has been very helpful in enabling me to process those struggles.” The June Jessee Memorial Foundation ensures that parents and caregivers have access to free mental health services to support them throughout their journeys, helping to make their lives and paths easier.

Continual therapy lessens Denise’s anxiety, allowing her more quality time to focus on loving and caring for Reese.

by stephanie wallace WHEN IT COMES TO REAL ESTATE , the market is experiencing historic demand, but that can shift in the blink of an eye. That’s why it’s more important than ever for buyers and sellers to find the right agents to help them navigate these unprecedented circumstances. “The key is to be adaptable and constantly stay in touch with where the market is day to day,” notes real estate agent Christopher Klages. As one half of the Manzer | Klages team of Gladys Manion Real Estate, he and his partner Keith Manzer lead clients through the process, so they can avoid the stress and anxiety that often comes with buying or selling a home. Klages joined Gladys Manion Real Estate as a full-time agent at the end of 2020. “Keith approached me to form a partnership because he saw that we had very similar approaches to how we work,” he says. “It was an excellent growth opportunity for me, and both of us would be able to expand our business.” Klages’ background is in finance, giving him a different perspective when it comes to crunching numbers for sales. “He has a very analytical approach, while I enjoy many of the marketing aspects,” Manzer says. “We’re 50/50 partners, so we both do a bit of everything. We gelled effortlessly without having to dictate who was going to do what.” With a 39-year real estate career, Manzer has decades of experience to share with Klages, but that doesn’t mean he’s not also learning from their partnership. “There is so much innovation in technology right now,” he notes. “Chris brings a lot of digital expertise, which has become very important.” Klages adds that the success of the team is built on their ability to work together. “We’re very active in communicating to make sure we’re on the same page,” he says. “That extends to our clients as well. Whether they’re buying or selling a home, we are in constant contact to make sure the transaction best benefits them.”

850 KENT ROAD, A PREVIOUS MANZER | KLAGES LUXURY LISTING

Manzer and Klages are both dedicated to serving St. Louis. Since Gladys Manion Real Estate is a local, family-owned company, they’re also grateful for the support the community has shown them in return. “In many major cities, it’s the bigger national brands that have a stronger grasp on the market, but St. Louis supports local businesses, and that’s important,” Manzer says. “This city is like a big small town. Most of our clients are referral based, and we love to get involved in the community we work in. We both enjoy contributing to charity and donating our time.” For Manzer | Klages, the homes are at the heart of all they do. The team is dedicated to marketing clients’ properties so they reach the right buyers. “We always make sure to spotlight what makes every home special, so buyers know it’s the house for them instead of one down the street,” Manzer notes. “We always have a unique plan for what we’re doing with a listing, and when you work with us, Chris and I are with you every step of the process.” Klages agrees: “Whether it’s a $200,000 or a $2 million listing, the home comes first.” & FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT MANZERKLAGES.COM OR CALL KLAGES AT 314.445.8220 AND MANZER AT 314.609.3155.

PET PERKS THE GATESWORTH

by stephanie wallace THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT ANIMALS BRIGHTEN OUR LIVES. Whether it’s cuddling with a pet of your own or watching videos of our canine and feline friends online, they can add an instant boost to your day. For many seniors living in retirement communities, pet ownership isn’t an option, but at The Gatesworth, furry friends are more than welcome. The senior living community is dedicated to the health and wellbeing of its residents, so it understands how enriching and beneficial having a pet can be. It’s just one of the many ways it’s dedicated to ensuring older adults stay active and engaged. The benefits of pet ownership are manifold. Dr. Marwan Sabbah, director of Cleveland Clinic’s center for health, notes that they can affect stress levels and brighten moods. “Simply petting an animal can decrease the level of the stress hormone cortisol and boost the release of the neurotransmitter serotonin, resulting in lower blood pressure and heart rate and, possibly, in an elevated mood,” she explains. Reducing your stress can positively impact other areas of your health, including heart disease, weight gain, mental health and even chronic conditions like diabetes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also reports that playing with or walking a pet can help decrease blood pressure and cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It’s recommended that a healthy adult get 150 minutes of aerobic activity each week, and a pet dog can help add structure to your daily routine that makes it easier to reach that goal. However, if Gatesworth residents cannot walk their own pet for any reason, the staff is happy to assist with the task. “I love my dog, Gigi,” resident Eleanor Stude says. “I don’t have the time to walk her as much as she likes, so I schedule The Gatesworth’s concierge to take her.” Pets also are a great way to avoid social isolation—an issue the pandemic has shone a light on over the last two years. Research has demonstrated that owning an animal or even just interacting with one can improve social connections, provide

social support and decrease loneliness. At a community like The Gatesworth, it also offers a great way to connect with other residents. Whether you’re sharing stories about your cat’s latest antics or meeting other walkers while taking your dog for a stroll, pet ownership is a great way to create new relationships or bond with old friends. “Gigi and I have made many new friends at The Gatesworth,” Stude notes. Pet ownership isn’t necessarily for everyone, but having the option is important. The Gatesworth allows residents to pick the lifestyle that will best serve them—whether that means getting exercise with an active dog, taking in the peace and quiet with an older cat, or just enjoying the amenities of the community SE NI OR HE AL & LIF ES TY LETH on your own. It’s a choice that resident Karen Levine enjoys having. “I have had many cats throughout the years—each has had its unique personality,” she notes. “Roxie, my current cat, brings me so much joy. MEMORY CARE

by stephanie wallace Joint health is a major concern as we age. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in four adults suffers from arthritis. T&S reached out to SLUCare orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ali Dalal to learn more about what happens to our joints as we get older. “Joint health is directly correlated with independence as we age,” he says. “Often, there is a gradual loss of mobility, and people don’t notice that they are starting to self-select themselves out of activities. At some point, they realize they can’t take care of themselves without assistance or a modified living space.”

We develop arthritis and other joint pain as we age for a variety of reasons. “It varies per joint,” Dalal explains. “For example, the most common reason for a bad hip is genetics or a past trauma that might not have been serious enough for surgery but did create the potential for arthritis.” Issues with ankles most commonly arise because of a previous injury, whether it’s a broken bone or damaged cartilage. The most common joint to have a complication is the knee. “Problems can arise because of meniscus or cartilage injury, and we also know it’s the joint most sensitive to weight gain,” Dalal says. “There is a very strong correlation between being overweight and developing knee arthritis.” “As counterintuitive as it may seem, walking and other activities can prevent joint pain,” Dalal notes. He points to recent research that has shown that walking every day can help prevent discomfort related to knee arthritis. While activity is key to staying mobile, it does vary for each joint. Braces can help support knees and ankles, so function can be retained even with arthritis. “However, once a hip goes bad, there is not a lot a person can do,” he says. “Luckily, hip replacement surgery is one of the most successful interventions we have.” If you are suffering from joint pain, Dalal suggests avoiding high impact activities like running. If you need a replacement activity, swimming and biking are both good options, especially if you have arthritis in your ankle. If you are worried about your hip, he says flexibility is key. “It’s important to stretch, especially in the early stages of hip arthritis,” he explains. “You experience pain when the joint contracts.” The shoulder is another joint that commonly has issues, but thankfully, it doesn’t impact mobility as much, according to Dalal. “We don’t put our body weight on our arms or shoulders, so it doesn’t hurt as much when we do strenuous activities,” he says. “You can handle games like pickleball or golf with little to no issue.”

JOINT PAIN CAUSES

At Brooking Park Memory Care, we are committed to helping families navigate their memory loss journeys by providing personalized dementia care to all of our residents. Brooking Park stands out from other memory care living centers in the Chesterfield area, offering a modern, beautiful, comfortable and secure atmosphere that encourages interaction and wellness among residents living with memory-related conditions. Each person has their own private suite with full en suite, delicious meals and snacks, activities as well as a highly trained staff for your peace of mind.

The most common treatment for joint pain is a steroid injection. Dalal notes that a lot of people are able to manage their discomfort with an occasional cortisol shot. However, if you don’t experience good results with steroids, he recommends platelet rich plasma (PRP). “The process involves taking a blood sample from the patient, running it through a centrifuge so it concentrates the platelets and then injecting it back into the painful area,” he says. “It doesn’t have the same downsides as cortisol, but insurance does see it as experimental treatment, so patients often have to pay out of pocket. Due to its success as a therapy, the cost has come down significantly.” If surgical intervention is necessary, recovery varies by joint. People who have had a hip replacement are usually the quickest to return to normal activity, followed by ankle and then knee. “It also depends on the patient,” Dalal says. “We all have different levels of pain tolerance and activity. With joint replacement, 85% to 90% of patients have their expectations met. It’s rare to see a procedure with such high satisfaction rates.” Dalal recommends consulting a doctor as soon as you notice joint pain. “The longer you’re living with a painful joint, the more function you lose and the harder it’s going to be to get it back, even after surgery,” he explains. “Don’t put off treatment. Many of my patients say their biggest mistake was waiting too long.”

BLOOD PRESSURE DISPARITY

STOPPING TUMOR GROWTH

Devita Stallings, Ph.D., the R.N. to BSN program coordinator and associate professor of nursing at Saint Louis University’s Trudy Busch Valentine School of Nursing, received a $50,000 grant from the Institute of Clinical and Translational Sciences to conduct community-based participatory research to develop an app to help Black patients self-manage hypertension—a condition that can put people at risk for heart disease and stroke and disproportionately impacts the Black population. Unlike similar apps, Stallings’ app will use theory-based, culturally relevant, individualized and evidence-based self-management interventions to improve hypertension disparities.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) causes people to develop tumors on nerves throughout their bodies. While the tumors are usually benign, they can still cause serious medical problems. Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine have found that lamotrigine, an epilepsy drug, can stop tumor growth in mice. NF1 is caused by genetic mutation, and previous research discovered that neurons carrying the mutation are hyperexcitable—something that also is a feature of epilepsy. Lamotrigine targets the same ion channel that is disrupted in hyperexcitable Nf1-mutant neurons. In mice models, those that received the drug had smaller tumors than those that were given a placebo.

LONG COVID RISKS New research from Washington University School of Medicine and the Veterans Affairs St. Louis Health Care System has found even vaccinated people with mild breakthrough COVID-19 infections can experience debilitating, lingering symptoms. A study of more than 13 million veterans found that vaccination reduced risk of death by 34%, the risk of getting long COVID by 15% and the risk of lung and blood-clotting disorders by around 50%. “Now that we understand that COVID-19 can have lingering health consequences even among the vaccinated, we need to move toward developing mitigation strategies that can be implemented for the longer term since it does not appear that COVID-19 is going away any time soon,” says Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly, a clinical epidemiologist at Washington University.

CYSTIC FIBROSIS OUTCOMES Cystic fibrosis is a congenital genetic disease diagnosed in childhood. It is characterized by abnormal functioning of ion transport channels, which results in organ damage. Dr. Dhiren Patel, an associate professor of pediatrics at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, has received a $50,000 grant from the Institute of Clinical and Translational Sciences to explore therapies to improve cystic fibrosis patients’ quality of life. Patel’s research will focus on GI tract function and abdominal pain. Research will investigate treating children with cystic fibrosis between the age of 11 and 18 with IB-Stim, a nonsurgical device that reduces pain related to irritable bowel syndrome by sending gentle electrical impulses into cranial nerve bundles.

HOMEWORK

T&S HOME DEAR HOMEWORK,

We love our house in Glendale and its parklike setting. We have been working on many interior projects but have run out of steam now that we approach the exterior. We think that we would like to paint the brick white and perhaps change the front door to differentiate it with the door at the other end of the porch. The screened porch could also use some help. Do you have any ideas? Sincerely, — LET’S TURN OK INTO OMG

DEAR OK INTO OMG,

I think that your house looks pretty good to begin with, but painting the brick white will bring the whole composition together. I would like to add a pair of light piers and clipped hedges that will create another layer of architecture to the entry garden, bringing a new level of elegance. Instead of changing the front door, I suggest planting over the walkway that leads to the secondary door. The additional landscape changes show simple horizontal planting under the window sills and some begonias under the entry hedges for some color. An upright evergreen provides a vertical accent and helps hide the screen porch door as does some ornamental grasses. All together these changes elevate the presentation enough to move it into OMG territory. Hopefully, you will be inspired to continue with the remodeling. Thanks for asking. —HOMEWORK

BEST WOOD FOR OUTDOOR FURNITURE In combination with aesthetics, it’s important to keep materials in mind when choosing wooden outdoor furniture pieces for your porch, patio, deck or poolside area. Each type offers a certain style and requires a specific level of care so you want to be sure those qualities align with your taste and lifestyle before committing. Teak Teak is the most highly recommended material for wooden outdoor furniture. Not only is it resilient in any season, but it also offers style and a soft, grained finish. This miraculous material produces its own oils, making it unique from other natural woods. Teak also requires little to no maintenance, which is a plus—we recommend just an annual cleaning to keep it in tip-top condition!

Rattan Rattan’s lightweight, flexible and durable qualities, along with its aesthetic appeal, make it an ideal material for wooden outdoor furniture. Often confused with the wicker weaving method, it is a strong and fibrous plant, much like bamboo. Cane Cane adds an undeniable essence of tropical warmth. Made from the stems of the rattan plant, this type of wood is a long-lasting material perfectly suited for outdoor furniture and has the ability to resist any climate change. Cane is also water-resistant and rustproof. Redwood

Eucalyptus The high oil content in eucalyptus allows it to stand up easily to moisture and resist rotting and decay. Eucalyptus, if properly cared for, is a great alternative to teak with the added advantage of being less expensive. Cypress Despite Cypress being a softer wood, it’s still a great option for wooden outdoor furniture. Because it's a light wood with a gorgeous grain, it has great visual impact. Cypress weathers a silver-gray color over time if left unfinished, similar to cedar, and has enough oil content to resist water and rotting.

Redwood Redwood is commonly used in outdoor furniture due to its natural insect and moisture-resistant qualities. This extravagant wood choice is structured with little pitch and resin, creating a stunning finish.

Cedar

Acacia Acacia is a thick, strong hardwood with high oil content. This rich and reddish-brown wood is a popular pick for outdoor furniture for its natural water resistance and durability, and given acacia is very abundant, it’s also one of the more affordable options for wooden outdoor furniture. Cedar Cedar is durable as well as naturally resistant to rot, insects and warping, and it presents a rich red color to add warmth to your outdoor space. Cedar may not last as long as teak, but it can still last a couple of decades if cared for properly.

PICTURE THIS… BEAUTIFUL BUILT-INS by lauren rechan

IT IS EASY TO UNDERESTIMATE the impact that well designed and executed carpentry can have on a home. Built-ins not only offer beauty and interest, but they also add function to spaces that are underutilized or inaccessible. Take a look at some of the latest ways designers and homeowners are amping up interiors with built-ins.

Such a clever way to use that dead space under a staircase. Turn it into Fido’s private hideaway. This standard closet was converted into a makeshift bunk room for extra guests. This mid-century modern bookshelf and storage unit also doubles as the perfect see-through room divider.

I love the trend of using glass and metal for doors in built-ins.

The Murphy bed has been experiencing a rebirth! Beautiful millwork conceals what is stored behind.

A very narrow space has been transformed into a bar area with custom arched wood doors.

This cabinet was designed to look like an antique in a newer kitchen.

This gorgeously designed storage unit takes center stage in this transitional kitchen.

Who doesn’t love a secret door that leads to hidden storage and doesn’t take up wall space? This stunning bookshelf composed of natural wood and bistro style shelving is the perfect backdrop for a cozy lounge.
