TRESCOBEAS SURGERY -‐ 01326 315615
2014 will undoubtedly see the NHS and GPs continuing to make head line news so I thought it appropriate to advertise what your surgery actually does. Recently an increasing number of health services have moved from the main hospitals into the local community and as such we are now more of a Health Park than just a GP surgery. At Trescobeas we provide primary health care for 9500 patients. For most this means contacting us when they are ill and on average our Doctors deal with over 200 patients every day. However we do a lot more than that. At Trescobeas our Doctors and Nurses do an extraordinary amount of preventative health care. Annually this includes reviews and advice for 600 asthma, 800 Diabetes, 200 COPD, 350 Heart Disease, 40 Epilepsy, 80 Dementia, 40 Learning Disabilities and 35 Cancer patients to name but a few. We also do 2500 flu vaccinations every year. We conduct Minor Operations (wart and mole removal), Medicals, Contraceptive and Family planning advice (including smears and fitting Coils and Implants), Health and Lifestyle guidance, Travel Vaccinations, Baby immunisations, routine Nursing such as stitches, dressings, ear syringing, B12 and ECGS. To do all of these we conduct nearly 10000 Blood tests and 3000 blood pressure checks a year. At Trescobeas we provide many of these services at our main Falmouth site and our Mylor and Flushing branch surgeries as well. At Mylor we also provide a full dispensary service. Additionally we house a District Nurse team and a Community Matron who deal with our more vulnerable housebound patients, Outlook South West counselling service, Ultrasound, Echocardio and Addaction, the Drug and Alcohol charity. Q&A Session with Debbie Gallagher, Owner and Senior Therapist at Waterside Skincare Debbie answers the most commonly asked questions about IPL Permanent Hair Reduction How does it work? Our Phaser machine delivers a red and yellow light to the area which is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair to destroy the individual growing hairs at the follicle whilst the yellow light targets the blood supply to the germ cells, preventing any possibility of re-‐ growth.
Is it a Laser Treatment? To put it simply, no it’s not a laser. IPL has a broader light spectrum to enable us to treat a larger variety of hair and skin types/colours more effectively. Most people think they are having laser treatment but in fact it is IPL. IPL is more common these days and is often incorrectly called IPL Laser.
What does the treatment involve? It’s simple, you wear protective goggles, lie back and relax while the therapist cools your skin with an ice cooled roller and moves the Phaser handpiece over your skin firing the light exactly where required.
Is it painful? Sessions should not be painful at all. The sensation is usually likened to an elastic band flicking against the skin with a little bit of warmth.
How many treatments will I need? Our experience shows that 6 – 10 treatments are usually required. We cannot guarantee a number of treatments you will need as it varies from person to person and can depend on your skin type, the treatment area, colour of hair and level of hair growth you have.
How often can I have treatment? Treatments are usually carried out every 4 weeks.
How soon will I see results?
6
On the whole most clients notice a gradual thinning and reduction of the hair growth after their first couple of treatments and this continues as their treatments progress. Want to see your EDITORIAL here? Please Email hayley@tr11mag.co.uk

Gylly Beach Cafe Many people know the Gylly Cafe as a buzzy beachside place, with great daytime catering, and fun to visit. But for those who haven t been there for dinner, a real treat awaits. By evening it becomes a very classy restaurant. Imaginative use of candles, grown-up place mats and other touches turn it into a stylish yet relaxed place to eat; my only criticism from a feminine view is that I d like to see linen tablecloths (preferably white) and napkins. However, the food is terrific. Recently I went with a companion and we enjoyed a superb meal. At the heart of most of the dishes was a very well cooked, or prepared, central ingredient which in each case was further enhanced by highly imaginative and very well executed accompaniments, resulting in pretty - and witty - dishes which were as good to eat as to look at. The starter course was varied and I chose the Fish Plate. It was so delicate, just right! A few scallops and a delicious round of hog s pudding on the left, such a good combination; prawns done lightly in, I guess, a tempura batter and a stunning ring of squid in a sweet and sour jus. On the right a beautiful taster of smoked salmon pate and dill with lightly-toasted French bread. My guest chose pastrami. The beef was flavoursome and tender and (the acid test) would have done a New York Jewish deli credit. On its own it would have been good but it came well kitted-out on a warm bed of bread topped with melted gruyere and was circled by wafer thin slices of beetroot, and touches of beetroot puree. Lastly, it was topped with a tasty but not intrusive grain mustard and the whole thing prettily dusted with tiny (basil) leaves. For the main, it was haunch of venison for my companion. It was cooked to perfection with just the right amount of pink in the middle; surrounded by all sorts of good things and rested in a delicious savoury/sweet jus embellished with blackberries ‒ an imaginative and amusing touch which paid off. A trio of vegetables was complementary in taste and colour ‒ kale, a vegetable rarely well used but here was tender and tasty, roasted red onion and a puree of butternut squash. The puree was crowned by a cleverly achieved stiff wafer of Parma ham. [It was when his main course arrived; looking splendid, that my companion, who eats out often in London, said the standard of cooking and presentation would equal most top London restaurants]. My belly of pork, served on a pureed potato mash, was crunchy on top and the meat soft and succulent with two gorgeous carrots sitting on a bed of lovely shredded Savoy cabbage. Delicious!

The puddings were as imaginative as our earlier courses. My apple and blackberry crumble with cream was a picture of artistic perfection. The presentation was exceptional; tiny flat crumble in the centre of the plate, surrounded by a ring of the apple and blackberry and, surrounded again, with cream. And elderflower sorbet on the side. Too pretty to eat really ‒ but I did! My guest s poached pear, normally a fairly routine pudding, came with an absolutely delicious elderflower sorbet and a winter fruit compote ‒ its sharpness contrasting well with the sweetness of the other ingredients - and was set on a clotted cream shortbread base. The ensemble was as lovely to look at as to eat. It showed thought and imagination carried through to first rate execution. The service we received throughout was courteously attentive but unobtrusive. At each stage we were given helpful but not, as is sometimes the case, overlong explanations of each dish ‒ and we benefited from some (gentle) recommendations as to choice. In a couple of cases we followed them and the suggestions turned out to be well justified. The Gylly has a sensible but unpretentious wine list so there is quite enough to choose from. We enjoyed a modestly priced, crisp and fresh Pinot Grigio. All in all, the Gylly Cafe for dinner is, if you haven t been there, definitely a place to discover - and if you have, a place to return to!

Sold! A few months ago I interviewed four Falmouth University students, Pip Cree, John Doran, Hannah Elwood and Josie Wooderson. These four, alongside a group of others, have hearts for justice and as well as raising awareness about human trafficking. They have managed, by undertaking a night walk from Falmouth, Gyllyngvase Beach, to Porthtowan, to raise £3,000 for Hope for Justice (a charity that works to set people free from being trafficked). Nevertheless, awareness that human trafficking is occurring needs to be continuously raised until it is no more, which may take many life times. There are statistics that Northern Ireland has the fastest growing sex trade, but there is also evidence that such activity happens much closer to home than we think. Where there is any major port, including Falmouth, there is a chance that exploited women are being shipped in, to then be transported to the larger cities. The fact we know little to nothing about this just shows how important it is that awareness is raised so people know the consequences of porn and that women are being exploited. One interviewee stated that, when it comes to being a John (a buyer/client of a prostitute), the ignorance card is often played. She’s a consenting adult, so this is fine. This isn’t rape. However, human relationships are compromised, women are forced into

sex and a corrupt, underground society continues to flourish. During the interviews, it was apparent that personal stories, as well as having strong Christian faiths, inspired these students to act. One such story referred to a community who found out about trafficking occurring in their neighbourhood and went to the police, only to be met with inactivity. This said it led to the community constructing a database on all the brothels in their town and handing it over to the police. The police then cracked down on the brothels, which led to some more women being freed from exploitation. Another story involved an elderly lady making cupcakes and going to a brothel, that wasn’t too far from her house, to engage in building friendships with some of these women who’d been exploited and had a life stolen. It was these stories, as opposed to the cold figures that made the interviewees feel closer to the trapped women. One of the facts used a couple of times was that women were often tricked into prostitution through someone they thought they loved and thought loved them. For one interviewee, she stated it wasn’t the gory stuff that always shocked but, rather, the subtle lies that brought these women into such situations. Nevertheless, the facts surrounding this situation aren’t glamorous either. Children as young as 3 are trafficked, in 2003 there were an estimated

expectancy of a trafficked woman is 7 years (death varying from drug over use to suicide, from being beaten to being killed by buyers). One of the reasons such trafficking is occurring, with an increased frequency, is that drug dealers have realised human trafficking is more profitable. You can sell drugs once but you can sell a woman multiple times. Recently, I have come across further statistics regarding women trafficked for prostitution: -‐ At some point she has considered suicide (75%) -‐ She is two times more likely than a soldier in a war zone to have Post-‐ Traumatic Stress Disorder (68%) -‐ She is a victim of incest (65% to 90%) The figures aren’t good, the stories are worse. Nevertheless, things don’t have to continue this way. As referenced by one of the interviewees, Isaiah 58:6-‐9 is a powerful few verses from the bible that show the heart of a God who desires to see people free and the oppressed lifted, as Jesus would come to live, act out and be crucified for. It’s on this that I shall conclude, ‘Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with
shelter -‐ when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness [a] will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.’ Sources used: http://iwantrest.com/2013/09/17/10-‐ things-‐you-‐might-‐not-‐know-‐about-‐ women-‐being-‐sold-‐for-‐sex/ [accessed 23/09/2013] http://hopeforjustice.org.uk/the-‐issue [accessed 23/09/2013] http://www.biblegateway.com/passa ge/?search=Isaiah%2058:6-‐ 9&version=NIV [accessed 23/09/2013] DAVID GREEN FALMOUTH UNIVERSITY STUDENT

Led by a representative from the Gorsedh (last year it was past Grand Bard Brian Coombes), the Mayor and Town Clerk, followed by walkers with flags, then children from local schools dancing a special furry, the parade sets off from The Moor. To the sound of the band, it goes down Webber Street, up High Street, turns round in Brewery Yard, returns down High Street, and – uniquely here in Falmouth – goes down to the end of The Prince of Wales Pier and back. It then goes back up Killigrew Street to The Moor, where there is a gathering, before disbanding. Everyone is then invited to

refreshments in the Methodist Church. The parade is organised by volunteers and depends upon the generosity of local people and businesses for sponsorship – financial or in kind. Last year we received sponsorship from the Town Council, Methodist Church, Prince of Wales, Octopus, Lewis Houghton Wills, WC Rowe, Hine Downing, Cutty Sark & Stunnells restaurant and various individuals. In previous years we have also organised a window display competition for the shops in town.
