A TRaditional January‌??? Once New Year's Day arrives, many people have had their fair share of holiday cheer and ready to commence with their normal routine. But, for those of us who enjoy ongoing festivities, January offers something fun to celebrate every day! I recently discovered HolidayInsights.com; a unique website offering a host of useful and not-so-useful information. One of the best features is their celebration list. I'm not certain if these "holidays" really exist, but they certainly are interesting. For example, Holiday Insights proclaims January 3rd is Festival of Sleep Day. If it's not a recognized holiday, it should be. Considering most of us are worn out from holiday shopping, gift wrapping, baking goodies and attending parties, it would be nice if we had a day to sleep in and catch some serious zzzz's. January 6th is recognized as Cuddle Up Day. Holiday Insights recommends "cuddling with your cutie, snuggling with your sweetie, and hugging your honey." Your cutie, sweetie or honey can be your spouse, fiancÊ, best friend, or a furry friend. After all, January is a cold, dreary, dark month. Might as well cozy up next to another warm body and have a cuddle-fest! Speaking of furry friends, January 14th is dubbed, Dress Up Your Pet Day. My sister will be quite pleased to hear she can dress up her Dalmatian and be guilt-free. For those of you who have patient pets, buy them a cute little outfit and celebrate their uniqueness on this special day. January 24th is reserved as Compliment Day. Personally, I don't know anyone who doesn't appreciate receiving compliments, but I do know several people who never give compliments. Imagine a day devoted to everyone complimenting those who cross their path. The world would be a better place, so jump aboard the compliment train and lift someone's spirits.

Spouse's Day is celebrated on January 26th. Holiday Insights claims Spouse's Day is a prelude to Valentine's Day and recommends giving personal time and attention to your spouse as opposed to buying gifts. In our fast-paced society, we tend to overlook the ones we love the most. I know I have been guilty. If you are married, plan a special evening and get reacquainted with your spouse. Looking for a reason to eat cake? Then mark January 27th on your calendar and indulge in Chocolate Cake Day. Imagine an entire day devoted to eating chocolate cake guilt-free! Bake mini chocolate cakes and share with co-workers or invite friends over to indulge in a variety of chocolate pleasures. Serve with chocolate wine and you're certain to have a merry time.

Closing out the month of January celebrations is Backward Day. This is a great way to have fun with your kids. Celebrating backward day requires participants to do everything backwards. The options are endless. You could have dinner for breakfast and breakfast for dinner. Or, you could read books starting at the end. Encourage your children to explore their creative side and have a barrel of fun all day long. On a serious note, January is National Blood Donor Month. If you have the opportunity to give blood, please consider doing so. Donating blood is one of the greatest gifts you can give to mankind. Prune autumn fruiting raspberries, gooseberries & blackcurrants Prune apple & pear trees Plant bare root trees, bushes and hedging as long as the ground isn’t frozen Harvest broccoli, sprouts, leeks, parsnips & other root vegetables You can sow sweet peas from January onwards Order your seeds now for spring sowing When the weather allows have a tidy around the garden, clearing spent foliage etc. Force your rhubarb by surrounding the crowns with straw and placing an upturned bucket over it to exclude light. The young shoots will be much more sweet and tender to eat as well as being ready to pick early.

Dear Readers of TR11,

Challenge yourself for Children’s Hospice South West With another New Year underway, why not set yourself a goal to do something you can be really proud of? Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) is encouraging local people to push themselves, face their fears, or go the exTRa mile to help families with life-limited children. From skydives to firewalks, abseils to overseas challenges, marathons to cycle rides, the charity has a series of challenge events already in the calendar for 2013. So all you have to do is be brave enough to pick one and then go for it! Emma Lloyd Head of Fundraising for CHSW’s Little Harbour children’s hospice sets down the challenge: “Why not make 2013 a year that really counts by doing something amazing for Children’s Hospice South West? Whether you’ve always had the intention to trek up a mountain or throw yourself from a plane, walk over hot coals or push yourself to the limit on your bike, or it’s never crossed your mind before… Whether you’re a seasoned adrenaline seeker, runner, or cyclist or a complete novice, now’s the time to take up the challenge for CHSW! “All the money raised from our exciting programme of challenge events goes towards caring for families facing the most imaginable of circumstances – that their precious child isn’t expected to reach adulthood. At Children’s Hospice South West we do everything we can to help these families make the most of every single moment they have together. So by taking on one of our challenges and enriching your own life you will also be enriching theirs.”

The Garden Pre-‐School is an early years setting which is based at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Falmouth. The pre-‐school takes children from 2 to 4 years old, including a ‘nursery year’ provision, so that children can go straight into the reception class at their chosen school. Children from The Garden go on to a wide range of local schools in the Falmouth and Penryn area. The Garden is a relatively small, family focussed setting, offering sessional pre-‐school provision 5 days a week during school terms. We aim to make a strong connection with children though developing warm and positive relationships with whole families. We believe that because the children we work alongside are still so young, it is key that they feel a strong link between home and their experiences with us. This link is developed through a gentle settling in process, a warm welcome to parents and other care givers, regular events which allow parents to join us in working with their children on events or projects, and a continuously developing dialogue with parents as to ways the pre-‐school can meet their needs as well as those of the children. Each session at The Garden includes free play (indoors and accessing our own outside area), group times for stories, singing and other adult-‐led activities, a healthy snack, and access to a range activities that are planned by staff in response to children’s individual development. Each child is assigned a ‘key worker’ who works closely with that child and his/her family to build a secure relationship and to observe and plan for that child’s on-‐going development through their time at the pre-‐school. Our team of well qualified and experienced staff are always happy to meet prospective parents and to arrange a visit for new little ones to come and meet us all. To find out more or to arrange a visit, please call 01326 315249 and ask for The Garden Pre-‐School, or email mail@emmanuelbaptist.co.uk, giving the message subject as ‘The Garden Pre-‐School’ -‐ seen in TR11. There is no need to put up with painful waxing, electrolysis, plucking or using smelly hair removal creams any longer. Waterside Skincare have the expertise to quickly, painlessly and safely rid you of unwanted hair with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Permanent Hair Reduction. A long time ago these treatments were only available in London but now there’s a solution right on your door step. Waterside Skincare uses IPL technology which works by emitting short bursts of light, creating heat as it targets the pigment in the hair follicle, destroying each hair at its root. IPL is a very simple treatment and our advanced treatment techniques and years of experience ensure that your treatments are safe, pain free and comfortable. The sensation whilst having treatment is best described as a short, sharp ‘flick’ like an elastic band flicking against your skin. Unlike waxing and electrolysis, IPL is not a painful experience and most clients are relieved that it is so pain free. Here’s what one of our clients Suzanne from Falmouth said “Have been having IPL hair reduction since June and I am so pleased with the results. I wish I had it done years ago! It’s been such a boost to my confidence”. IPL is suitable for both men and women and is also great at reducing and managing excess hair growth if you have polycystic ovaries, hirsutism or from the menopause. We can treat from head to toe including facial areas, underarms, legs, bikini, back, chest and shoulders (other areas can be treated too). Free consultations are always available with our fully trained and experienced IPL therapists so that you can come in, have a chat over a coffee and see if this is the right treatment for you. Until the end of January Waterside Skincare have a HALF PRICE offer on all IPL Permanent Hair Reduction treatments. This offer ends on the 31st January so don’t miss out! Call Lizzy today to book your FREE CONSULTATION on 01326 389322 or you can book online at www.watersideskincare.co.uk Please mention TR11 when contacting our advertisers

Pants began nearly 6 years ago when I had womb cancer and came to realise that no one ever talked about it, and so, many people were dying. I dreamed of having a logo and a ribbon colour, which everyone would recognise. In this way, deaths could be prevented.

TRy My Mother’s Bread and Butter Pudding Just delicious!

100g (4oz) butter, melted 75-175g (3-6oz) mixed dried fruit (sprinkle in to taste) 75g (3oz) sugar grated rind of 1 lemon 1/2 teaspoon mixed spice 12 thin slices white, crusts removed OR a pack of Brioche (fruit, plain or chocolate) 3 eggs 600ml (1 pint) milk 2 tablespoons demerara sugar

Serves 6-8

You will need an oven proof dish 18x23x5cm (7x9x2in). Use some of the melted butter to grease the dish. Pre-heat the oven to 180’C/350’F/Gas 4. Fan 170’C (don’t pre-heat for fan oven). In the Aga, bake on the grid shelf on the floor of the roasting oven 20-25 minutes. Combine the dried fruit, sugar, lemon rind and spice together in a bowl and toss to mix well. Cut each bread slice into 3 strips. Take sufficient slices to cover the base of the dish and dip one side of each in the melted butter. Lay them in the dish, buttered-side down. Sprinkle with half the dried fruit mixture (or to taste). Repeat the layering, laying the bread strips butteredside up. Lay the third and final layer of bread strips on the top, buttered-side up. Beat together the eggs and milk in a bowl and pour over the pudding. Sprinkle with demerara sugar, then leave to stand for about 1 hour if time allows. Bake for about 40 minutes or until the top is golden brown and crisp and the pudding slightly puffed up. Serve hot, or there are some who insist that it is delicious cold!

INTERVIEW WITH RICK STEIN What is your favourite I have many favourite fish dishes but I always come back to a fish stew from the south of France called bourride. It’s rich in tomato, fennel, fish fumet and Provençal herbs but it is the way it is thickened with a pungent aïoli made with garlic and olive oil, which really excites me.

Any advice to someone

My mobile phone, my swimming cossie because I swim every day, fish, it's my favourite dish!

What's the best piece of advice you've every been

given...

This was a mantra of a friend of mine's (Rick Hill a Virgin Atlantic pilot) Dad: 1. Turn up on time. 2. Do what you say you are going to do. 3. Finish what you start. 4. Always say please and thank you. I may not achieve this in my lifetime!

Where is your favourite place in the world excluding

buying fresh fish; what fish?

I'm somewhat ashamed to say I don't have a hobby because my favourite way to relax is cooking. But I love swimming too.

What three items can you not live without?

fish dish?

to look for when buying

What do you do in your spare time? Any hobbies?

Â

Hopefully  by  now  we  are  all  getting  over  the  excesses  of  the  Christmas  period.  People  always  joke  that  health  clubs  get  you  to  join  in  January  when  the  memory  of  your  new  year’s  â€œget  fitâ€?  resolution  is  fresh  in  your  mind.   Well  your  pet  may  need  the  same  attention,  and  it  could  help  you  too.  Â

An  overweight  pet  is  far  more  likely  to  have  long-â€?term  health  problems.  If  you  think  your  pet  is  a  little  more  â€œcuddlyâ€?  than  usual  the  first  thing  you  should  do  is  call  your  vet  for  a  thorough  examination  to  check  for  medical  conditions  that  may  be  causing  the  weight  gain.  In  the  majority  of  cases  of  weight  gain  there  are  usually  no  underlying  medical  causes.  In  these  cases  you  should  ask  your  vet  about  weight  clinics.  Most  surgeries  run  them  and  they  are  often  organised  by  the  nurses  for  relatively  little  cost.  These  clinics  will  be  able  to  advise  you  on  diets  and  will  be  able  to  help  and  support  you  in  monitoring  and  managing  your  pet’s  weight.  Â

Most  pets  are  naturally  active  but  over  the  winter  months  their  activity  will  fall  and  they  can  gain  weight.  Here  are  a  few:   Â

Dogs.  This  is  really  a  book  in  itself,  suffice  to  say  a  daily  walk  is  the  best  idea;  it  benefits  both  pet  and  owner.  In  essence  your  dog’s  weight  reflects  the  balance  between  daily  in-â€?take  of  calories  versus  calories  burnt  by  exercise.  The  more  you  exercise  the  more  you  can  eat,  or  the  way  I  look  at  it,  a  game  of  squash  buys  a  glass  of  claret!   Â

Cats.  Cats  are  natural  hunters  and  many  cats  are  only  seen  once  or  twice  a  day  by  their  owners  as  the  rest  of  the  time  they  are  out  and  about,  although  it  is  quite  possible  they  are  asleep  outdoors  somewhere.  If  they  are  active  young  cats  then  they  are  probably  getting  enough  by  just  being  an  outdoor  cat.  Indoor  cats  are  a  different  matter.  The  cat  that  loves  nothing  more  than  to  sit  on  the  chair  or  windowsill  all  day  watching  the  world  go  by  is  far  more  likely  to  suffer  from  increased  weight  gain.   The  simple  answer  is  regular  play.  Cats  are  naturally  curious  animals  and  small  fast-â€?moving  objects  will  cause  the  innate  chase  response  right  from  when  they  are  kittens.  Most  mature  cats  will  continue  to  show  it,  particularly  when  they  have  practiced  it  all  their  lives.  Try  rolling  small  balls  such  as  one  of  those  practice  golf  balls  which  have  holes  in,  or  even  easier,  a  scrunched  up  piece  of  paper  tied  to  piece  of  string  and  pulled  erratically  will  get  their  interest.  Some  people  even  tie  these  objects  onto  fishing  lines  and  poles  so  that  the  game  can  take  place  over  a  larger  area  without  the  cat  seeing  them  do  it!  Furry,  feathery  or  flapping  things  are  particularly  attractive  to  cats,  but  with  kittens  especially,  replace  such  toys  as  they  start  to  get  damaged  in  case  parts  get  swallowed.  Patches  of  bright  light,  such  as  the  reflection  from  a  watch  face  or  mirror,  often  get  cats  chasing.    Â

Rabbits.  Rabbits  can  be  good  pets  and  nowadays  are  the  third  most  widely  kept  small  animal.  However  many  people  continue  to  keep  their  pet  in  a  small  hutch,  perhaps  sited  at  the  bottom  of  the  garden.  Such  rabbits  live  a  miserable  existence  in  cramped  and  uncomfortable  conditions,  with  no  area  provided  for  exercise.  Poor  housing  is  one  of  the  main  reasons  for  ill  health  in  rabbits.  Rabbits  need  to  be  outside  for  a  while  every  day.  They  need  sunlight  to  produce  vitamin  D.  Whatever  the  size  of  the  hutch,  rabbits  need  exercise  and  the  safest  way  to  achieve  this  is  by  using  a  run.  However,  the  run  must  be  escape-â€?  and  predator-â€?  proof  and  provide  shelter.  The  run  should  be  moved  daily  so  that  the  rabbit  has  fresh  grass  to  nibble.  Make  sure  that  the  grass  has  not  been  treated  with  weed-â€?killer  or  any  other  harmful  substance.  The  run  should  only  be  used  for  day  time  exercise  and  the  rabbit  placed  back  into  its  hutch  at  night.  Ensure  that  other  pets  are  not  able  to  frighten  the  rabbit.  Cats  appear  to  love  to  use  runs  as  a  resting  place  and  are  greatly  entertained  by  the  stress  of  the  occupant. Court a minority sport

Go on TRy it!!

Olympic legacy funding from Sports England’s Inspired Facilities Fund is set to benefit racket sports provider, Falmouth Sports Club. Gymnasiums and swimming usually remain first choice when people set about losing weight after Christmas, so the club is keen to shout about its facilities and dispel misconceptions surrounding private sports clubs. Squash is played in 150 countries around the world yet the International Olympic Committee has insisted golf and rugby sevens are more attuned to Rio 2016’s Olympic ideals, and while these sports enjoy major media coverage, minority sports providers struggle to raise awareness of their games. The Committee at Falmouth Sports Club believes their club provides a fantastic environment where people can participate in sport, and the grant they’ve secured for a refurbishment of their courts, changing areas, and clubhouse should help them attract new members, though they’re realistic about the obstacles they face. Squash is often perceived as an aggressive sport played primarily by men which clubs and coaches are keen to dispel. Women’s Squash Association top ten ranked players such as England’s Jenny Duncalf and Laura Massaro are testament that female players are breaking this perceived tradition. The introduction of racketball has also enticed female players back to squash courts. England Squash and Racketball Coach, Siobhan Garland, is the current and nine times ladies squash county champion and is ranked fifteenth in national ladies racketball. An avid supporter of both sports, she confirms, “Racketball is the fastest growing UK racket sport with pathways for competition already established. Falmouth Sports Club runs adult and junior coaching sessions for squash and racketball for all abilities, so it’s a great time to start playing.” Private members sports clubs are also often perceived as formal and elitist rather than centres where families can improve their health and fitness. Des O’Reilly, Head Tennis Coach at Falmouth Sports Club is keen to reverse this mindset, “Tennis is fun and a great way to keep fit with family or friends, it’s an egalitarian sport open to everyone, it isn’t expensive or stuffy it’s just about having fun.” Moreover, the club believes their busy social calendar and lively community spirit sets them apart from other sports providers -‐ for them, having fun while keeping fit is a no-‐brainer. It sounds like they’re onto something. So perhaps it’s time to TRy a racket sport this year -‐ we might even get fit in the process.
