The Great South West Walks 2014 Opens For Bookings -‐ 100 New Walks Announced
With 100 stunning coastal walks to choose from, the Great South West Walks 2014 is now open for bookings. These specially selected circular walks by the South West Coast Path Association, will take place across Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset from 20th -‐ 28th September. Walkers can look forward to taking part in easy and family friendly strolls as well as challenging and rough terrain treks; many of the walks have themes such as history and wildlife, mining heritage, foraging, Jurassic geology and even a barefoot hike -‐ each guided by an expert walk leader. The event will raise vital funds for the South West Coast Path Association and Children's Hospice South West, through these sponsored walks, which will go towards the improvement of the South West Coast Path and supporting children with life limiting illnesses. Ken Carter chairman of the Great South West Walks project team, is delighted to be able to announce the walks saying: "This year's event is gearing up to be fantastic, with a real variety of themes and types of walks in place. These celebrate the South West's strong heritage and history, which walkers will be able to experience alongside helping to support the Coast Path and CHSW." One of the walks chosen for Cornwall is a circular walk at Perranuthnoe, near Helston. This walk will be led by National Trust Barefoot Ranger Julie Hanson, with hedgerow and wild food foraging along the way. Julie will be leading this walk barefoot and encourages anyone who is interested in partaking to join her in the sensory phenomenon that is barefoot hiking -‐ by walking barefoot you can experience the Coast Path like never before. Walkers can try the barefoot experience for the entire route or, for the more tentative, short stretches if slip on shoes are worn. Julie will also be explaining which wild foods and hedgerow findings can be eaten along the route through foraging techniques. Julie Hanson, National Trust Barefoot Ranger, is delighted to be able to lead a walk as part of the event saying: "I am really looking forward to leading the Barefoot Hike as part of the Great South West Walks as I feel it is a truly unique way of experiencing the Coast Path. There are many benefits to walking barefoot alongside foot health -‐ plus there is no way of getting closer to nature and being more a part of the environment than feeling the path between your toes. I hope lots of participants join me!" This walk is one of the Great South West Walks' easy routes at 2.3 miles and is recommended as child friendly. To take part, participants can visit the Great South West Walks website and choose one or several of the 100 walks that they would like to participate in at www.greatsouthwestwalks.co.uk Alternatively, registration can be made via telephone by calling the South West Coast Path Association on 01752 896237. Further information about the organisations and the walks can be found on the website, or on Twitter @LoveSWCoastPath or Facebook /SWCPA Please mention TR11 when contacting our advertisers

Seymac Report Tourism Trends
Seymac Distribution Services has analysed figures on tourism for the county, which show that visitor numbers and spend is beginning to pick up. Seymac, based in Redruth, promote a range of tourist attractions and events in Cornwall, distributing 18 million leaflets for more than 50 tourism attractions. Throughout the year Seymac undertake surveys with their clients to provide facts and figures on the performance of Cornwall's tourism industry, whilst exploring trends within particular months. Seymac are now looking at statistics from March and April 2014, compared to March and April 2013. The survey saw 419 respondents including: 33% from bed and breakfasts and guest houses; 23% from self-‐catering cottages; 21% from caravan and camping venues; 16% from holiday parks; 3% from hotels; 2% from pubs and inns; and 2% from other venues from within Cornwall's tourism sector. The findings reflect a difficult first quarter for 2014, with a battering of storms resulting in issues that affected many Cornish businesses -‐ with an 18% increase in the number of businesses being closed for March, compared to March 2013. However this trend started to come down in April, with a 6% increase in the number of businesses being closed for April 2014, compared to April 2013. In April more than half of those surveyed reported an increase in visitor numbers for 2014 compared to the previous year, whilst nearly half reported that visitors' spend per head was higher, compared to the previous year. Tina Seymour, Managing Director of Seymac said: "Although it has been a difficult first quarter for the county, with some tough obstacles to overcome, we are hopeful that the rise seen in April will continue through to the summer months. We are pleased that most businesses are now open and ready to maximise the summer season. We believe that the improved weather in April, along with the social media campaign -‐ ‘Cornwall is #OpenForBusiness', helped to get the county's tourism back on track." Seymac's subsidiary company, AppForCornwall.com, helped to promote the #OpenForBusiness campaign by offering free app listings to businesses that were badly affected by the poor weather. Jason Richardson, IT Manager of AppForCornwall said: "We are passionate about promoting Cornwall wherever and whenever we can in order to generate more business for the county. After the tough winter storms, we are pleased to help by showing that Cornwall is open for business. We now have our fingers crossed for some good weather in the lead up to summer, in order to see the visitor numbers continue to increase, as we have seen in April, so that we can challenge last year's summer figures."

Over eight months we’ve been restoring a tired building into a new creative space where Eight Wire can face an exciting future. The journey has included a new roof, the discovery of a beautiful wooden floor, funky roof-‐ beams, an abundance of ideas for dealing with a full-‐ immersion cast-‐concrete baptism tank, blocking doorways, jumping through funding hoops, creating doorways, re-‐plumbing, creating offices, procuring a classic Italian sofa, building an aerial library and, best of all, installing a boiling water tap.
It’s been quite a journey which we’ve made in the company of a band of artisan builders from St Ives called Gekko Designs. They braved snow, rain and hurricane-‐ strength winds not to mention dive-‐bombing seagulls. We look forward to welcoming clients and friends to our new space.

Tel: 01326 376880 Email: info@8wire.co.uk Our graphic design team and web developers have been working in the background to build the new Eight Wire website. We are using an agile project management style for the project meaning the site will be under continuous development for a wee while and you can expect to see more appearing on the website over the coming weeks and months as it evolves into a portfolio piece for Eight Wire’s design and marketing capabilities. www.8wire.co.uk Built using WordPress technology, the site was designed with our (very) recent office move in mind. Our graphic designers have worked closely with Falmouth illustrator Robyn Stock to create lifelike drawings of the new studio. Now that the throng of builders, cleaners, IT support technicians and removal men have (mainly) left the studio, it’s time for everyone at Eight Wire to focus on the stream of exciting projects ahead. Hundreds of young people across the UK prepare to take part in Falmouth Tall Ships Regatta
Young people from all over the UK are gearing up for an exciting challenge this summer as they countdown to the start of the Falmouth to Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Regatta, which takes place from 28 August to 9 September. Over 280 young people from a wide range of backgrounds will be sailing under the banner of the Association of Sail Training Organisations (ASTO), the UK’s Sail Training umbrella organisation. Nearly half of the 47 sail training vessels from around the world lining up to sail in the regatta, organised by Sail Training International, are ASTO members. At least half of the crew on board each vessel will be under 25. ASTO has 18 member vessels from all over the British Isles taking part including Scotland, Wales, East Anglia and the South of England. Lucy Gross, general manager of ASTO, said: “It’s fantastic that nearly half the vessels on the start line for this year’s Falmouth to Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Regatta will be our members giving

young people from all over the UK a life changing experience. The trainees taking part will find out first-‐hand what they can achieve when they push themselves beyond their comfort zone. It is an experience they will remember for the rest of their lives and will give them invaluable skills and experience. “We know that Sail Training can make an important difference to young people’s lives when they return ashore. The message that comes back week in and week out from our ASTO members is that the Sail Training experience increases their confidence, communication skills and ability to work as a team, which can have a huge impact on all areas of their lives.” “We’re really excited to have so many ASTO vessels from all over the UK signed up for this year’s Falmouth to Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Regatta. The number of vessels taking part in the Regatta has exceeded our expectations and we look forward to welcoming the ships and their crews to Falmouth for a packed programme of entertainment,” comments Sam Groom, Falmouth Tall Ships Regatta Manager, for Cornwall Development Company. ”Participating in the Race as crew member is a wonderful opportunity for young people right across Cornwall and further afield to take part in a truly once in a lifetime experience. It is not too late to sign up to take part in the Race, the Regatta website provides further details.” On race day 31st August, the fleet of Tall Ships will pass between Henry VIII’s twin Tudor castles of Pendennis and St Mawes in a magnificent Parade of Sail to the start line in Falmouth Bay and finish the race off the Isle of Wight before cruising in company to London, where the 47 diverse sailing craft are expected to arrive on 5 September. ASTO, the Association of Sail Training Organisations, is a registered charity with a membership made up of more than 30 not-‐for-‐profit bodies that operate more than 50 vessels around the UK. ASTO members offer year round Sail Training opportunities all over the UK, around Europe and also further afield in locations such as the Canaries and the Caribbean. Some members from the Falmouth Fundraising Group met at Merchants Manor this week for their monthly meeting where they celebrated the success of the past year with tea and cakes. During the last year the group has organised Great Daffodil Appeal collections, a Great Daffodil Walk, the Holly Ball, a Blooming Great Tea Party, collecting boxes in shops and local businesses and collected donations from supporters. The total raised is a staggering £16,109.79 which will fund 805 hours of Marie Curie Nursing care in the community.
Members are asking TR11 readers to consider hosting a Blooming Great Tea Party this summer. The idea is simple, pop the kettle on, bake some cakes and invite some friends around for a 'cuppa' and raise funds for Marie Curie Nurses. Every £20 will fund 1 hour of local nursing care. To register you must sign up by 7th July by visiting: www.mariecurie.org.uk/teaparty<http://www.mariecurie.org.uk/teaparty> You will then receive a free fundraising pack with lots of ideas and tips on how to make your team party a great success.
Plans are also in hand for the 2014 Marie Curie Holly Ball which takes place at Merchants Manor, Falmouth, on Friday 19th December and should be a date for your diary. Tickets from £17.50 will be on sale shortly. For more details please call 01872 260500.
Marie Curie Nurses provide high quality nursing care in the homes of terminally ill patients, day or night, 365 days a year. This service is completely free of charge to the patients and their families. The charity relies heavily on generous voluntary donations to continue this care.
FREE TRADE SHOW EXPERT GUIDE DEBUTS
A UK-‐based exhibition specialist has released a comprehensive new guide to trade show marketing success. Display Wizard, based in Preston, have created a unique and useful trade show guide which is available for free to read online, or download as a PDF.
The guide is available to read as a whole here http://www.displaywizard.co.uk/display-‐ hub/trade-‐show-‐guide/, or is conveniently structured into eight separate sections detailing a wide range of advice. This includes how to prepare for trade shows and how to effectively use social media at a trade show.
This resource was created to address a real need that industry professionals had in effectively utilising the time they had at trade shows. There are many blog posts and informational resources across the web on the subject of trade show tips, but this is the first time these resources have been collected into one convenient guide.
Pete Symonds, of Display Wizard stated “We’re absolutely thrilled to present our trade show guide as a resource to help businesses make the most of their exhibition marketing. We truly believe that it will provide a comprehensive and valuable resource to businesses that exhibit at these events. He went on to say “Trade shows are a fantastic opportunity for businesses and customers to connect on a very real level. We hope this guide helps businesses achieve a greater ROI from trade show marketing.” GOT AN EVENT? CONTACT HAYLEY

Air Ambulance Asks Cornish Communities: Where Can We Land?
year or less. For the casualty at the time, though, that site could be vital.” The charity already has access to around 40 Community Landing Sites across Cornwall, including sites in Central Cornwall such as St austell Rugby Club, Newquay Tretherras School, Falmouth Docks and the cliff car park at Polruan. Helston Cricket Club is an existing Community Landing Site. Bar manager Terry Rustell said: “The air ambulance has been using our pitch as a landing site for many years. In 2013 they landed here 8 times -‐ some years it's more, some years it's less. “It's our way of giving something back to the charity and to the local community. We've had to have assistance from the Cornwall Air Ambulance at matches before and know just how important it is, particularly to a community like Helston that's so far from the major hospitals. “We even take the crew a bag of soft drinks and crisps when they land; they often don't get time to stop between missions.” To find out more about Community Landing Sites members of the public can visit the charity at Royal Cornwall Show stand 66, call the charity office on 01637 889926, visit the website at www.cornwallairambulancetrust.org/landing or email enquiries@cornwallairambulancetrust.org
Cornish MPs Lend Support to Air Ambulance Campaign
LOCAL MPs have lent their support to a campaign for lifesaving improvements to landing facilities at the region’s Major Trauma Centre. COMMUNITIES in Central Cornwall are being asked to help Cornwall Air Ambulance identify a Community Landing Site in their town or village. The charity says access to pre-‐surveyed landing sites could help speed up emergency response times, especially during missions after nightfall. The 'Where Would We Land' campaign has been launched at its stand at the Royal Cornwall Show 2014. Cornwall Air Ambulance Chief Executive Paula Martin said: “Our crew will usually land the helicopter within metres of the casualty, locating a suitable landing site on arrival at scene. “Sometimes though it's necessary for the helicopter to rendezvous with a land ambulance to collect the patient for onward travel to hospital. “Having access to pre-‐surveyed landing sites can help save vital minutes in pre-‐flight planning, particularly after dark, allowing the helicopter to set out on the rescue as quickly as possible.” The charity is appealing to communities across the county to contact them with suggestions for potential Community Landing Sites. Suitable spaces include fields, sports pitches, school playing fields, car parks, village greens and even large gardens. Sites need to be clear of trees, overhead wires and other obstructions and would be surveyed for suitability before being added to a directory of Community Landing Sites. Ms Martin said: “We urge people to bring this up with local councillors, school or sports club committees, farmers or other landowners and work together to find a suitable site in their community, and then to get in touch. “We don't want people panicking that we'll be concreting their village green or sports pitch. No changes will be made to these sites and in the majority of cases the site may only be used once a

Cornwall Air Ambulance took its campaign to Westminster on Monday 9th June at the annual reception of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Air Ambulances. Derriford Hospital is the region’s designated Major Trauma Centre but existing daytime landing facilities for emergency helicopters will be unsuitable for use in the dark as they cannot be modified to meet regulatory requirements. MPs Sarah Newton, George Eustice and Andrew George attended the event to express their support, whilst letters of support were received from MPs Stephen Gilbert and Sheryll Murray. Chief Executive for Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust, Paula Martin, said: “The reception gave us a brilliant opportunity to discuss our concerns surrounding the inadequate landing facilities at Derriford Hospital with our local MPs. “This is a big step forward in our campaign. We have worked very closely with Derriford Hospital and other interested organisations over the past couple of years, and the hospital have secured an appropriate site and permission to build. “All that’s missing now is the funds, and we hope Monday’s meeting with our local MPs will be the first step in securing the necessary funds and getting spades in the ground.” 50% of the capital cost of the project has been pledged by national charity HELP but the hospital is unable to fund the remainder of the project itself due to other budgetary constraints and commitments. Nick Thomas, Director of Planning and Site Services for Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “The Trust is currently working to determine how the other 50% can be funded. “We are very grateful for all the support that this project has received from our external stakeholders and hope that the capital funding can be identified soon then we can start the building work.”

Cornwall Air Ambulance attends around 800 emergency calls every year, with every emergency mission funded by charitable donations. The charity has seen a significant increase in the number of patients it delivers to Derriford since the hospital was declared the peninsula’s Major Trauma Centre in April 2012.
Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust is the charity that fundraises to operate the helicopter emergency medical service for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
Every year our helicopter responds to around 800 emergency calls for help and is on-‐scene at an incident in an average of just 12 minutes. The helicopter can reach patients in any part of Cornwall, significantly reducing the time taken to get seriously ill patients the treatment they need – in hospital or on-‐scene.

Cadets Support Race for Life Army Cadets from Falmouth, faced thousands of ‘Pink Ladies’ when they volunteered at Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life in Falmouth. The cadets supported the event by providing well needed refreshments on the course and unveiling the total fundraising at the end of the event. Volunteering at local events is a fantastic way for cadets to gain confidence and give something back to the community. Cornwall Army Cadets is staffed by adult volunteer instructors so it is really important that the cadets understand the importance of the difference volunteering makes to their local area. Captain Demelza Stevenson, Training Officer for Gibraltar Company, said “I am so proud that the cadets wanted to help out at this really important charity event. Cancer affects every family and the cadets provided support to make sure the Race for Life was a success.” If you would like to help the young people of Cornwall learn new skills, develop self confidence and find new friends please register interest at www.armycadets.com or to go along to your local detachment. If you have any questions, please call Army Cadets Headquarters on 01208 78183 or visit http://armycadets.com/county/cornwall-acf/ Falmouth Army Cadets unveil the total amount raised at Falmouth Race for Life so far. What Makes Me Happy:
My Favourite Food:
My man! Walking in woodland. Snorkelling when the sea's not too cold. My children helping with the housework. I'm really happy when I see them self motivated to do something creative like play music or paint a picture.
Freshly caught sea-bass grilled, with new potatoes, butter and runner beans from the garden.
Well there's a lot. I enjoyed watching 'Searching for sugar man' recently.

ADVERTISER - FALMOUTH GRASSHOPPERS
“After advertising in TR11 Magazine for the first time; we were booked up with 17 jobs after only 10 days from the release date of the magazine. We had such a huge response to the advert that we actually had to pass 4 jobs to another business! TR11 is filling a gap that other local advertising options don’t offer, we are very happy with the results.”

My Favourite Book:
Unfortunately, I don't make time to read novels. I do enjoy a good biography and I tend to buy practical books. The last book I bought was 'Learn to play rhythm 'n' blues saxophone’ - to help me with harmonics, growling etc. (on the sax)
Luxury item I last bought: A bright yellow, 1967 VW beach buggy
Life would be simpler if... People understood that borders and countries are just a man-made concept. We are all busying about on the surface of a rare, beautiful blue sphere with the thinnest atmosphere saving us from the harshness of space. Astronauts talk about the profound effect of seeing the earth from space. Perhaps, if we kept that in mind, people wouldn't get so hostile.
My Hobbies:
Playing saxophone in Weazeldust, Gardening, Painting, Keeping tropical fish, and a cat and a dog.
My Proudest moment:
Having a home birth in Africa, when I worked there as an Art Teacher.
Check the floor pan thoroughly for rust holes before buying a beach buggy! My Favourite item of clothing: This is very tricky. I am obviously spoilt for choice running Sheikyerbooty. My favourite item could well be a funky red flower power coat that was left in the sale in Bohoz before I merged it with Sheikyerbooty. I couldn't believe no-one bought it so I had to treat myself. Mind you, I'd probably miss my sheepskin slippers the most, as I live in them at home.
My Simple pleasure:
Feeding the birds in my back garden. I live near the woods at college reservoir in Penryn and get lots of wildlife in my back garden. I love watching visitors to the bird table from my bedroom window; like this morning I saw a greater spotted woodpecker.
