ELEMENTAL KIDS’ CLUB: GET THE MOST FROM THE COAST On sunny mornings, a line of children emerges from Elemental’s HQ at Falmouth’s Swanpool Beach and snakes down to the water’s edge. Clad in wetsuits, helmets and buoyancy aids, they hop into kayaks and paddle to a sandy inlet on the opposite side of the cove. They while away the morning messing about in boats and jumping off rocks before spending the afternoon sailing, stand-up paddleboarding or raft-building. It makes you long to be a child again. “It’s great to see young people enjoying the water,” says Dany Duncan, head of Elemental. “It is great to introduce children to our wonderful coastal environment as early as possible - in a safe, controlled way, of course.” The benefits are manifold. “It’s possible to become quite proficient at sit-on-top kayaking in quite a short space of time,” says Dany. “What’s more, kayaks and paddleboards allow you to get up close and personal to all kinds of marine life, such as seals, dolphins and basking sharks. Last summer one seal regularly nudged the bottom of our boats.” But possibly the best thing about watersports is the way in which it helps young people grow in confidence and self-esteem. “Some go out thinking it’s going to be too hard,” says Dany, “but inevitably they find resources they didn’t know they had, and that is incredibly rewarding.”

FALMOUTH BOAT HIRE You give up things when you hire a self-drive boat from Falmouth Boat Hire. Things like stress, worry and the daily routine. What makes Falmouth Boat Hire the highest quality boat hire service in Cornwall? There is no magic it’s the amazing place we live in that does it.

When I was a lad I had the best job in the World. During the spring and summer I would leave school and rush down to Custom House Quay to help out on the self-drive boats. It was magical, a young teenage boy working on boats and learning about knots and the tides, getting sun kissed every day, I was hooked. Becoming a joint Director in Falmouth Boat Hire last year, one of the longest standing boat business in Falmouth, has re-ignited my passion for the sea, for the River Fal, for the majestic sublime place we all live in, Falmouth. It really does give me a great deal of pleasure seeing customers returning to the Quay having hired a boat for a day, or half a day and seeing how relaxed they are, how comfortable they have become with the outdoors. It’s absolutely true that a trip out on one of our boats for the day is literally an amazing experience. Those of you who have been lucky enough to have grown up with boats, will know full well what I refer to here, the experience of calm and tranquility of the River Fal. Your worries and stress drift away with the salty fresh air, the kids adore it and relish spotting some of the amazing wildlife in the estuary.

It is surely a crime that many local people have not had this opportunity. This is where Falmouth Boat Hire really provides a great service for local people. You can take your family out wildlife spotting, enjoy the river, dine on a picnic and make your way up the estuary in the shadow of Trelissick Gardens, Smugglers Cottage and head towards Malpus, the land that time forgot. You don’t need any experience to hire a boat from us, we give you full instruction and a map, and we are on the end of a phone for your entire trip. It’s very much safe family fun, and we can’t wait to see your face upon returning, with a beaming relaxed smile and calm kids. Chris Hambly Director facebook.com/falmouthboathire

The best bit was checking out the amazing view once we got to the top!” Tom Courtney “Aldous and his team made everyone welcome. Some who were nervous were quickly put at ease and the area the climbing takes place in is very beautiful. (Ponsonooth). We made an afternoon of it and walked around Kennel Vale. An excellent Christmas present!” Hayley Neate “A nice way to spend a couple of hours pretending to be a chimp in a lovely part of Cornwall” Carl Anderson “Exhilarating. Falmouth Gig Club has launched a new fundraising campaign ‘Row to Rio’! With the help of the local community, the Falmouth rowers are embarking on rowing the 8,958.926km distance from Falmouth to the Olympics 2016 host city Rio de Janeiro on their club rowing machines. Thankfully they have set themselves (and whoever volunteers to help them) over the next four years until the 2016 Olympics, to complete the challenge – although this still means rowing a daunting 2,239.73km a year! That’s a lot of chain oil… The club started their row at the Tremough Community Games at the Falmouth & Exeter University Campus in Penryn. There were plenty of willing volunteers keen to help start the virtual Atlantic crossing who were each awarded a certificate as a thank you for their contribution to the challenge. The six rowing machines set up outside the Sports Centre were going nonstop for four hours! 129 rowers (mostly children) rowed an incredible 190.5 kilometers. Only 8,958.926 kilometers to go! Many thanks to Tremough Sports Centre for lending the club three of their Concept rowing machines. The club are hoping to raise enough money to be able to purchase a new race boat including a new set of oars, seats, boat cover and trailer. If you would like to take part in the Falmouth Gig Club Challenge or want to keep updated with news and progress follow @FalmouthToRio on Twitter. For more information call Mel Williams 0797 3315589

Meet Sherree Valentine Daines at Driftwood Gallery, Falmouth This Summer Driftwood Gallery in Falmouth welcomes leading British artist Sherree Valentine Daines for a rare personal appearance. This exclusive event will take place on Saturday 15th June between 2 until 4pm and is expected to attract collectors from all over the UK. This latest collection from Sherree visits three of the subjects that have brought her work to international prominence: Ascot, Henley, and the magic of childhood. Working from her own personal photographs she has created an exquisite portfolio of personal memories and precious moments that will have a broad appeal to both existing collectors and newcomers to her work. Sherree enjoys a formidable reputation as the UK’s finest figurative talent. Her work is held by many major public spaces including the Barbican, the Tate and the Lord’s Museum, and she numbers several members of the royal family amongst her private collectors. The event will offer a rare opportunity to acquire work from the individual described by one reviewer as ‘the face of Modern British Impressionism’. Driftwood Gallery is an innovative art venue which aims to bring previously unseen, high-end original artwork from around the world to a discerning audience of collectors. While the gallery remit includes the finest new work regardless of genre, it does have a particular interest in figurative paintings as this is perhaps one of the most exciting, ‘happening’ areas in contemporary art. Gallery Owner, Justin Easton commented: “We are extremely excited to be hosting this memorable exhibition with Sherree as our guest of honour. We have been in close consultation with the artist and together we have put together a stunning series of pieces that show exactly why Sherree was officially named as the UK’s Finest Impressionist Artist. I hope that all our friends in the area will join us for a glass of champagne and the chance to meet an outstanding figure on the UK art scene.”

Driftwood Gallery has kindly secured special ‘dinner, bed & breakfast rates’ at The Greenbank Hotel for Sheree’s devoted collectors, so for anyone wishing to plan a special weekend in Falmouth to coincide with this event please call the hotel on 01326 312440 and quote 'DAINES'. BE PART OF SOMETHING AMAZING THAT IS SWEEPING ACROSS CORNWALL!
CORNISH KARMA Make someone smile with a simple gesture of kindness… Cornish Karma is built on the ‘Suspended Coffee’ idea which is taking the world by storm, where people buy a hot drink for themselves and a suspended one for a homeless person to be given out by the café or takeaway. The big-hearted people of Cornwall are going one step further and asking “Why stop at a coffee?” and “Why not for everyone?”. It could be a pasty, parking, or ice-cream – anything that a customer wants to purchase, held in “suspense” for someone else - either to help someone in need, or simply to make them smile.
If your café, take away, shop, etc. wants to accept suspended items, please email helen@eventy.co.uk If you w ould like to purchase a suspended item, ple ase check the Facebook page for participating venues. WAY TO GO SENIOR CITIZENS!!
"A vintage lunch for those aged 60+ at Rick Stein's restaurant on Events Square is a must! You will be presented with a superb piece of locally sourced fish, cooked in batter which is hot, smooth and crisp on top and underneath, accompanied by sensible sized chips, mushy peas, tartare sauce and a wedge of lemon. The amount served was just right and all for £4.95! Completely delicious and definitely value for money! The house white was very acceptable and the desserts on offer were excellent and all very reasonably priced. Sit at the bar/table that runs the length of the windows that overlook the square and one has entertainment into the bargain. A bonus was the fact that the background music was turned off when the restaurant started to fill up, which it did very quickly - not a free seat in the house and catering for all ages. A lovely atmosphere and brilliant service by very charming staff.” Very impressed would be putting it mildly! A very satisfied customer, Wendy Gilyott-Brown

TRi11s and TReats With local Chiropractor Helyn Morris There has been a lot of excitement in the press recently about the possibility of an antibiotic cure for low back pain. Unfortunately few news reports fully explained that this was a small scientific study on patients with very specific condition following disc herniation. Fantastic news for those particular sufferers but it seems unlikely that antibiotics will be widely prescribed in the near future for most types of low back pain. There are also serious issues with prescribing of antibiotics as they are starting to lose their effectiveness and can have unpleasant side effects. Interestingly it appears to be a particular kind of spinal inflammation caused by bacteria that was being researched but there is also recent research showing that chiropractic and other manual therapy treatment can reduce inflammation and stimulates the bodies own immunity and ability to fight infection naturally. This may be one reason why so many of my patients recover from many different kinds of pain and tell me how much better they feel generally too. In the meantime a little bird told me that dark chocolate is an excellent anti inflammatory and one I am very happy to "prescribe" and share ! Enjoy www.harbourchiropractor.co.uk

FALMOUTH DEMENTIA ACTION ALLIANCE Taking action to improve the lives of people living with dementia
Falmouth Dementia Action Alliance
Falmouth is one of a handful of towns and cities around the country which has encouraged local businesses and organisations to help raise awareness of dementia. People affected by dementia in Falmouth are telling us that awareness is getting better which is improving the experience of people living with dementia.
Taking its cue from Plymouth Dementia Action Alliance, the first in the country in 2011, Falmouth Memory Cafe, gathered information about the difficulties encountered by people living with dementia in the town. This led to the formation of the Falmouth DAA in 2012 and with the help of The Alzheimer’s Society and The Rotary Club of Falmouth a plan was devised to encourage local businesses and organisations to take at least one action to improve the lives of people with dementia. 200 local businesses and organisations have signed up and agreed to take action (mostly by raising awareness) transforming the lives of people with dementia and levels of awareness are rising considerably, changing the way we look at dementia. If you’d like to know more, contact joint co-ords, Toops and Bob Bridges: e-mail mylorbridges@gmail.com
THANKS FOR THE MEMORY Music and movement for the brain The Alzheimer’s Society’s Singing for the Brain project in Penzance and Truro has been an amazing success. According to our survey of Memory Cafe guests, this was needed in Falmouth too - it is well known that music and movement are good for stimulating brain functions, and its tremendous fun as well. The Falmouth Dementia Action Alliance has responded by arranging a similar activity THANKS FOR THE MEMORY, sessions are held on the first and third Tuesdays each month, from 10:30 for 2 hours at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Western Terrace, Falmouth, £2.50 per session to cover costs. Contact 07570 808677 for further information, or by e-mail, mylorbridges@gmail.com
