Star-Studded Line-Up Announced for Fal River Festival

The 10th annual Falmouth University Fal River Festival has announced its full

line-‐up, revealing a programme packed with diverse and entertaining events in celebration of the area's cultural and natural riches. The festival runs for 10 days between 22nd and 31st May 2015.

Anna Druce, the festival's Creative Director, explained the thinking behind the impressive programme: "Everything is tied to the river and how it shapes our lives; creatively and physically." She added: "The Fal River defines the landscape and how we travel, it inspires our artists, helps shape our food culture and motivates us to live active, outdoor lives; the festival is our way of celebrating all of that." An undisputed highlight will be a performance of ‘Down by the River' by Swamp Circus at Feock: A family-‐friendly story told with acrobatics, mime and live music. This energetic piece of immersive theatre features a professor of stupidity, a leaking boat, aerial ballerinas dancing on sails, acrobatic African pirates, dancing trees, a sea monster, fire-‐eating fairies and a lost dog.

Another star-‐studded performance of a different nature will be held at Trelissick National Trust Gardens on the 29th May from 9pm, where Cornwall Astronomy Society will have a range of telescopes set up for observing the night sky. At the head of the Fal estuary, Trelissick is a great spot for star gazing; amateurs can expect to see the many craters of the moon, the rings of Saturn, star clusters, nebulae and constellations. Another major local attraction taking part this year is the National Maritime Museum, who will host ‘Thor' themed activity days as part of their major Viking season, as well as storytelling and craft sessions.

Falmouth Art Gallery and The Poly will also get stuck in with exhibitions and films planned as part of the festival, while artists along the breadth of the river will be throwing open their doors for the annual Open Studios event. Another creative contribution comes from Kernow Education Arts Partnership (KEAP), which has created a mesmerizing pop-‐up performance of Cornish and English folk songs and poetry to regale visitors in various locations across Falmouth. The food culture of the area will not be neglected, with a food and craft festival taking place on Events Square in Falmouth on the 23rd -‐ 25th May, and a foraging walk on the 28th May with local expert Rachel Lambert starting at St Mawes Harbour. Daffodil Ball for Marie Curie The Truro Fundraising Group hosted the 13th Daffodil Ball at The Alverton in Truro on 21 March. A very successful evening was held with live music provided by ‘ Double Bounce ‘ and Mark Kaczmarek acted as MC and auctioneer for the evening. 66 guests enjoyed a delicious 3 course meal and with monies raised from the luxury raffles and auction a total of £3,598 was raised which will fund 180 hours of local Marie Curie Nursing care in the community. Chairman, Merrill Burrows, said “We are so grateful for the support of all of our guests and supporters and to all those who kindly donated prizes. The funds will help the local Marie Curie Nurses to continue providing high quality nursing care for terminally ill patients, free of charge, but the nurses are also in the home to give emotional support and advice the family.” For further information on the Truro Fundraising Group or work of Marie Curie please call 01872 260500.

The Filling Station on the 13th April was a great success. Seventy-‐seven gathered in the Penmorvah Hotel, initially to sample the coffee and buns that they do so well there. Once replete we set ourselves to some good worship singing, music provided by the Budock group. Our ‘person with a life changing story’ was Liz Tate, wife of Mike, tonight’s speaker. Liz was like so many of those Biblical personalities who have gained a message from God, and ignored it! It took two or three attempts by our Lord before the message sank home. However, since taking notice, her life has changed for the better in all aspects (sadness still creeps in of course). However, her faith shines through and life has been more fortunate than tragic. Mike spoke to our meeting on the theme of ‘Suffering’. Everybody suffers at some point in their lives, it could be for several reasons. Self-‐ induced suffering comes from an unhealthy desire for alcohol, drugs and overindulgence in food. Personal suffering comes from bullying, bodily and mental persecution, death of a loved one and illness of the mind or body. Physical suffering comes from natural disasters; earthquakes, floods and the like. No matter what suffering we may have endured, it does not match the scourging, beating, taunting, whipping and the horrific, humiliating and degrading crucifixion of Jesus. So if we suffer, we have someone who knows what we are going through and we can take great comfort from knowing the love of our Lord around us and his promises for eternity.

Mike’s speech was very emotive because, to illustrate his theme he described his and Liz’ personal suffering through the loss of their son. Their faith in the risen, living Lord sustained them, and although the pain will always be there, they know that their son is now painless and happy with our Lord. That gives great comfort. The love of Jesus surrounds all sufferers who call on him to ease the pain of suffering. Following Mike’s talk, people stayed and chatted, rather than go home immediately. Some people gained comfort from personal prayer Once again we must thank the Penmorvah Manor Hotel for their caring hospitality. Neil and his staff give us a warm welcome and look after us very well. Our next meeting is on Monday 18th May. Our speaker is Nick Crawley, the Filling Station Regional Director for the Southwest. Everybody is welcome to our meetings. Come along and bring your friends, neighbours and relatives. If you have problems with transport, please phone 01326 378065 for assistance.

An introduction to

Techsouthwest Hello, we’re the team from TechSouthwest in Falmouth. We took over the store in November 2014 and have been removing viruses, replacing components and phone screens since then! Our aim is to give you reliable customer service and information on the latest upcoming tech. From our Falmouth store we look to deliver the following services:

The Moor Argos

Virus Removal(s) Computer/Laptop Repair Custom Built Computers Phone Screen Repairs Computer Sales General Computing Advice The list goes on and on! Since we’ve only got a page you’ll have to pop in to see how much we offer!

Wearable Tech Our first tech update focuses on wearable Tech and in particular the recently released Apple Watch and Android alternatives. With the wearable tech market expanding massively over the years we’ve seen the release of Google Glass in 2012 and Fitness bands that monitor your vitals, daily activity and sleep patterns. The next expectation is the demand for smart watches and in line with this we now have smart watches in stock in our Falmouth branch! Pop in to take a look and find out more! Smart watches allow you to see incoming text messages, make calls, access contacts, emails, and believe it or not, check the time! Most third party watches will connect to Android and Apple devices. With 3 different Apple Watch models, and a range of styles, there really is something for everyone. The Apple Watch Sport is available in a 38mm case and a 42mm, available in a range of colours. With an Ion-X Screen the device has a weightless feel as well as the strength to reduce the risk of damage on impact (So we might not see too many of these coming through the door for screen replacements).

Keep an eye out in the June edition of TR11 for our next update!

Bumper Markets Promised as Spring Returns

Truro Farmers Market is celebrating the return of spring, with a feast of local produce and fresh flavours marking the change of season. With an injection of new producers, seasonal foodstuffs and a reinvigorated street food offering, the market is a great place to experience Cornwall’s grassroots food scene this spring. Raw Chocolate producer Food of the Gods has joined the market, supplying organic, raw chocolate made in St Just, Penwith, with varieties including Mulberries, Coffee Bean and Spiced Orange. Another new stall-‐holder is Pura Pressed – locally made juices and soups which offer a healthy nutritional boost from natural ingredients. These new traders are now appearing at market alongside long-‐standing regulars like Meadowside Nursey, which sells vegetables, cut flowers and plants at its busy and colourful market stall. Owner Anne Pengelly is currently enjoying a run on Anemones and Alstroemeria and of course Daffodils, while later in the spring potted Aquilegia and Lupins will be available. Anne is also busy dispensing Purple Sprouting Broccoli and newly arrived Spring Rhubarb, and it won’t be too long before highly prized Tregassow Asparagus returns to market for its short but eagerly-‐anticipated season. Jennie Keeler from Tregassow explained: “We like to have our fields in the open rather than covered as some do, so our asparagus is naturally grown with sun, wind and rain, and the dates are therefore very weather dependent!” Meanwhile the selection of street food available at market has an underground following among those in the know, who are drawn towards the irresistible scent of Samosa, Flatbreads and Curries from Ruby June’s Indian Kitchen. Another favourite is Harry Bartlett’s delicious offering; the @Home menu this spring is inspired by Mexican street food and features Burritos, Quesadillas, Enchiladas, Tostadas and Fish Tacos made using market produce including Primrose Herd Pork, Cornish Duck and Venison from Duchy Game. Yallah Coffee has bought the flavours of Central America to market, after a recent sourcing trip to Nicaragua. Entrepreneur and coffee obsessive Richard Blake says: “For the first time we were able to journey to the origin of our beans to meet farmers and source coffee, and we are now selling coffee from one of the farms we visited -‐ Santa Maria De Lourdes -‐ and we're expecting more deliveries in the coming months.” With these and many other fresh new ideas, spring is the perfect time to rediscover the joys of your local market.

The Farmers Market takes place every Saturday and Wednesday on Lemon Quay in Truro, with a regular market every Tuesday on The Moor in Falmouth. Visit www.trurofarmersmarket.co.uk for more information, or follow the market on Twitter at @TruroFarmersMkt

Musical Theatre is one of

the most enjoyable and confidence building classes JTPA provide. In the industry the term “Triple threat” means that you are able to dance, act and sing. From “Frozen and Annie” students have the opportunity to learn, understand and perform to their favourite musicals.

The Age 4-‐6 years MUSICAL THEATRE group will be working on a piece from “Matilda” in the summer term.

Acro and Tumbling classes have now been introduced at JTPA in Truro by popular demand. The classes have been added to our timetable to help students with the basics from “forward rolls” to “cartwheels” and for the more advanced “aerials” and “walkovers”. Here are a few of the fabulous classes that are offered for the Under 13’s. Tina is our lovely 2 ½ year old black and white cross breed who came into Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre Ilfracombe as a stray. She is very affectionate and will have cuddles all day. Tina loves her toys and is a lively lass. She is learning her basic commands and works very well for treats. She shares her kennel here with Tizer and staff really can’t understand why no one has fallen for her yet. They have taken her to the beach and she had a really lovely time. Tina is quite a strong girl we so feel she would be better suited to a home with teenagers. Her new owners should have lots of time to spend with her and continue with her training. A love of long walks is a must! If you think you can give Tina the loving, forever home she deserves, then please give our Canine Carers a call at our Ilfracombe Rehoming Centre on 01271 812709, we are open every day between 12noon and 4pm except Wednesday when we are open from 4.30pm until 7.30pm.

WESTOVER SURGERY UPDATE New Faces We have a new addition to our team of doctors. Welcome Dr Ruth Faulkner! This means we now have six doctors with a good balance of three ladies and three men. Ruth brings fresh ideas and skills to us. We have already had very positive feedback on her friendly manner and professionalism. Outside of work, Ruth likes to run. Those of you are up early may see Ruth on her morning run before surgery. New Technology Our new telephone system means you will never get an engaged tone when you call Westover Surgery. No need to re-‐dial and re-‐dial with fingers crossed that your call will get through. Your call will join a queue and be answered in the order it was received. (We’ve also increased the number of staff answering the phones to reduce the time you need to wait.) For those with the Internet, you can now make GP appointments and repeat medication requests online. Two hundred patients are now using this system and feedback is that it is simple and easy to use. A life beyond work You will meet staff from Westover in many areas of the community in Falmouth. Sarah, one of our receptionists, is a volunteer with the 2nd Falmouth Brownies. Another of our team, Kathy, is on the Pink Wig Events Committee. The Pink Wiggers have raised more than £40,000 to date and last year won the Breast Cancer Campaign “Best Regional Event” and were presented with their award at the House of Lords. Next up, along with 4 others from the Pink Wig Events Committee, Kathy will be taking part in the annual MoonWalk, walking the course of the London marathon to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer. If you would like to sponsor Kathy, forms are available at reception or you can donate at: https://give.everydayhero.com/uk/pink-‐ wiggers We’re always keen to hear what you think of us and how we can improve.
