‘WE MUST BE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT AFTER 45 YEARS!’ We recently realised that Falmouth Physiotherapy Clinic at Kestrel, Swanpool, Falmouth had been open for 45 years! Started in 1971 by Chartered Physiotherapists Vernon and Jean Gifford, and taken over by myself Philippa Tindle and my husband and physiotherapy partner Louis Gifford in 1988, it has been a truly family affair. Sadly, Louis died of prostate cancer in 2014 but I have continued working in our clinic at Swanpool and I am very ably supported by Louise Nichlolettos, a highly qualified physiotherapist who joined Louis and I in 2009. Louis was a remarkable man, clinician, teacher, international lecturer, writer and Fellow of the Chartered Physiotherapy. Louis and I trained and graduated together in 1981. In October 2014 I edited and published Louis’ final book called Louis Gifford Aches and Pains. Sales are worldwide and a donation has been made for every book sold to Prostate Cancer UK. So, what are we doing right? We recently asked a few patients – some new and some old why they valued our service and booked an appointment at our clinic. Here are some of the answers; ‘You told me what was wrong -‐ and it made sense’. We call this diagnosis and because we are medically trained and highly qualified and experienced we are good at it.

‘You were right – it took longer to get better than I thought it would -‐ but I got there’. We are good at explaining the time it takes for repair and recovery of most aches and pains and we tell the patients. This really helps patients to understand and then they often get better quicker! ‘You got me involved from the start and helped me to help myself’. Helping patients get going and using movement and exercise in the right way – early in recovery and with confidence -‐ is fundamental to good physiotherapy and we work very hard with our patients to do this. ‘You helped my nasty pain with your treatments’. We offer pain treatments like soft tissue and sports massage and manipulation, acupuncture, Tens, electrotherapy, graded exercises and re-‐assurance. We are good at understanding the body but we are also good at understanding how the brain and thoughts and feelings influence aches and pains. We also know how home and work life can influence patient’s recovery. Many patients said that, ‘We always give them time’ – all our appointments are a minimum of 45 minutes and we have a policy of trying to see people within 48 hours of contacting us. On average we see patients between 2-‐3 times. Finally, and most importantly, we care about our patients and we treat people how we would like to be looked after.

Be  “baby  bearâ€?  this  Autumn Â
People  living  with  night  storage  heaters  might  have  forgotten  what  it’s  like  to  feel  “just  rightâ€?,  says  Mark  Britton  of  Redruth-Ââ€?based  South  West  Heating.   Â
If  you  have  night  storage  heating, Â
you  could  be  forgiven  for  hating  this  time  of  year.  For  you,  the  shortening  days  signal  the  start  of  that  long,  infuriating  guessing  game  of  trying  to  predict  how  much  heating  you’ll  need  –  in  which  rooms  –  tomorrow  night. Â
Â
Set  the  dial  too  low,  and  the  following  evening  will  see  you  shivering  under  a  blanket.  Too  high,  and  you’ll  be  bracing  yourself  for  a  needlessly  painful  electricity  bill.  Meanwhile,  you  can  either  try  to  guess  which  room  you’ll  spend  the  evening  in,  or  heat  the  whole  house  evenly,  in  the  knowledge  that  most  of  the  power  will  go  to  waste.  Â
(Unless,  of  course,  you  decide  to  go  out  –  in  which  case  you  pay  to  heat  an  empty  home  anyway.)  Â
Crazy  as  it  sounds,  people  with  night  storage  heaters  sometimes  start  to  feel  this  is  normal,  and  forget  that  most  people  can  control  their  heating,  and  have  the  warmth  they  want,  when  they  choose. Â
Importantly,  they  don’t  need  to  charge  overnight,  so  they  give  instant  warmth,  controllable  to  within  0.5  degrees  Celsius,  so  your  home  can  feel  “just  rightâ€?,  all  the  time.    Meanwhile,  switching  away  from  Economy  7  heating  also  lets  you  reduce  your  daytime  electricity  tariff;  ELKAtherm’s  efficient,  German  engineering  means  just  a  little  power  gives  even  warmth  across  the  whole  room. Â
Â
While  you  can  choose  traditional  wall  or  dial  controls,  many  of  our  customers  now  prefer  to  use  our  simple  Heatapp  on  their  smartphone,  tablet  or  computer.  It  lets  you  pre-Ââ€?warm  your  home  before  you  arrive,  cancel  your  heating  if  your  plans  change,  or  adjust  the  temperature  without  leaving  the  comfort  of  your  sofa.  Heatapp  can  help  you  save  money,  too,  by  making  it  easy  to  see  where  and  when  you’re  spending  money  on  your  heating,  avoid  waste,  and  set  different  times  and  temperatures  for  individual  rooms.  Â
That  said,  it’s  not  all  about  saving  money.  Many  people  call  us  simply  because  they’re  tired  of  looking  at  ugly,  bulky  night  storage  heaters,  or  their  heating  has  broken  down.  It’s  easy  to  see  why  a  sleek,  modern  design,  with  a  choice  of  60  sizes  and  192  colours  –  not  to  mention  a  25-Ââ€?year  guarantee  –  might  appeal. Â
Every  day,  we  help  homeowners  across  Cornwall  to  switch  to  efficient,  German  ELKAtherm  heating.  Because  they’re  powered  by  electricity,  ELKAtherm  radiators  are  fast  and  tidy  to  install  –  usually  in  a  single  day. Â
As  a  Which?  Trusted  Trader,  we  want  all  our  customers  to  be  happy.  So  it  gives  us  real  pleasure  when  we  hear  they’ve  stopped  dreading  the  end  of  the  summer,  and  started  looking  forward  to  the  snug,  relaxed  evenings  ahead. Â

But  if  you  have  electric  heating,  the  truth  is  there’s  no  reason  why  your  home  can’t  be  as  warm  as  you  want  it  –  without  a  huge  electricity  bill,  and  without  the  mess  and  disruption  of  installing  pipework  for  oil  or  bottled  gas. Â

Unique Student Transport Scheme For The Fal River Area Fal River Cornwall, the private sector company which promotes the region, has teamed up with First Kernow and First Great Western once again to offer the only ferry, bus and train student transport scheme in the country. The Fal Mussel Card UNI gives students and staff at Falmouth University and The University of Exeter (Cornwall Campus) access to travel on the trains, buses and boats of the region for a one-‐off, discounted cost. The scheme was launched last year with great success, and will be rolled out again for new and returning students and staff this September. Alex Carter, Managing Director of First Kernow, said the travel group was proud to be part of the innovative scheme: "We know that travel costs can be a major issue for students, especially in rural areas, and so we are pleased to be able to provide improved accessibility at a fixed cost." The card -‐ an academic version of the scheme available to visitors -‐ means that students have access to unlimited bus travel between Falmouth and Penryn campuses, as well as on all First Kernow bus routes in Cornwall.
HEALTH AWARENESS, TREATMENT and EDUCATION We live in a world of unique physical, mental and chemical challenges. It is not surprising your body and mind can become overwhelmed and you start to lack energy, get aches and pains, have cravings all the time… Does this sound familiar? You may recognise when you begin to feel tired and irritable, you may realise that you begin to wake up in the night or find you are worrying about money or family members, you may even begin to lose interest in those around you. If you ignore these signs, you may begin to experience more physical symptoms such as headaches, migraines, IBS, asthma, eczema or high blood pressure, as well as other emotional symptoms. This is something we can really help you with. At Inspiring Health we offer a range of holistic solutions to help reduce these symptoms. These include massage therapies, stress management techniques, homeopathy, counselling, mindfulness, and nutritional therapies. These will provide essential tools to empower your self-healing mechanism, leaving you to actively enjoy your life and wellbeing on a daily basis. At Inspiring Health we are offering a FREE introductory 15 minute health check in the month of October To book yours please call 01326 231865 for a consultation.
Branch line trains between Truro and Falmouth are included with the card, which has an annual commercial value of more than £2,600 overall. The Mussel Card UNI can be used for unlimited travel on various ferries which navigate the Fal River, including the St Mawes and Place Ferries. Students and university staff can also use their card for free travel on all Enterprise Boats services; the colourful fleet run between Truro, Falmouth and St Mawes via Trelissick Gardens and the King Harry Ferry and are a great way to explore the area. Tim Light, Director of Fal River Cornwall, said: "The Mussel Card UNI is a cost-‐effective and sustainable way to travel to and from the university campuses. It also encourages students to get out and about and explore the fantastic scenery and attractions of the area where they have chosen to study; and they certainly won't be disappointed when they do!" Encouraging students and staff to use public transport also reduces the traffic burden on busy roads in the area and allows for investment in bus, rail and ferry services. Fal Mussel UNI Cards can be purchased for an entire academic year, and can be paid for in installments.

Gylly Nippers are the British Champions
Gyllyngvase Surf life Saving Club had its most successful result since establishing 8 years ago, after 2 days of fantastic performances at Exmouth Beach in South Devon. The nipper team has been crowned the British Surf Life Saving Champions, which is one of the biggest achievements in the sport. Out of the thirty clubs competing, Gyllyngvase SLSC finished over 300 points ahead of the second placed Woolacoombe SLSC, with fellow Cornish club St Ives SLSC in a close 3rd. The team was led by Gylly’s nipper coach, Matthew Trebilcock, added ‘Well done to all club members, I’m extremely proud of you all. There were so many excellent performances.’
Thank you to everyone who has helped so much towards this result, all the coaches, the committee and helpers, without you none of this would have been possible.’ The events are all based around the skills that lifeguards use to carry out rescues in the sea. They include swim + board races, sprints, endurance running, relay events and flags, a discipline that tests the reactions of competitors. Theo Fleming (15) completing the board race Over 40 children aged between 7-‐13 attended the event to represent the club, with a record of over 600 competitors taking part in total. Clubs were represented from all four corners of the country. Club Captain, Georgia Christophers, says ‘It was a fantastic result! I’m so proud of all our nippers who showed amazing skills, teamwork and competitiveness.’ For a club that’s only 8 years old this October, it’s an unbelievable achievement.’ Georgia was one of 20 youth (13-‐19) Gylly members taking part in the British Championships. Their completion took place on Thursday and Friday of last week. The youth members placed an incredible 3rd in the country, with some more amazing performances by all of the athletes. A top 4 finish in both the ski and sprint races was the notable Jodie Kotenko and Rosie Boulton (15) finishing nightlight.

The masters team (30+) competed on the Wednesday and Thursday at Exmouth. They finished an astonishing 6th with only 5 members taking part. The club is aiming to build on this section in future years. Gyllyngvase SLSC has over 150 active members from nippers all the way up to masters. There are a number of sessions throughout the week for all ages and the club regularly trains in surf on North Coast beaches to test the lifeguarding skills of its members.

Homeless Get StreetSmart The Cornish contingency of a national campaign raising funds for local homeless charities has raised £3,770.85, thanks to the generosity of the county's diners. Thirteen of the region's top restaurants participated in the StreetSmart campaign by adding an optional £1 onto customer's bills during the months of November and December. The money raised will now be split equally amongst the three nominated charities -‐ St Petroc's Society, the Cornwall Women's Refuge Trust and the Cornish branches of Foodbank. The total amount raised is fantastic news for national StreetSmart organiser Glenn Pougnet, who said: "Since launching, StreetSmart has raised over £7 million. We have helped homeless projects at a time when demands on them have increased and funding from other sources has dried up, so I think our contribution has been important to keep some of those services going." He added: "Our campaign helps to raise awareness of the issue of homelessness, which is not a high profile or trendy cause to support. It's difficult and misunderstood and we hope we shed a little light in a positive manner and give people the opportunity to help." All administration costs are paid by national StreetSmart sponsor Deutsche Bank, ensuring that 100% of the £3,770.85 raised in Cornwall, stays in Cornwall. Cornwall's celebrity chef, Nathan Outlaw, has once again supported this very important campaign, with both his restaurants -‐ Outlaw's Restaurant in Rock and Outlaw's Fish Kitchen in Port Isaac, taking part in the scheme. Nathan was delighted with the total amount raised, saying: "We are very pleased to be able to support StreetSmart and the important work they do. It's so easy to overlook those who find themselves experiencing hard times but our customers have shown that they are a generous bunch and with their help we have been able to give something to the campaign and hopefully it will make a difference." The other restaurants involved in supporting the campaign across Cornwall were: Archie Browns in Truro and Penzance, Old School Bar and Kitchen in Mount Hawke, Alba in St Ives, The Victoria Inn in Penzance, The Square in Porthleven, The Halsetown Inn in St Ives, Kota and Kota Kai in Porthlevan, No.4 Peterville in St Agnes and Carbis Bay Hotel & Estate's Beach Club.

Martine Derry, Owner of the Old School Bar & Kitchen said: "The Old School Bar & Kitchen is proud to have supported such a great charity initiative. We hope that others follow suit because this is such a simple initiative but can make a huge difference to the lives of those affected."Nola Kinna, Managing Director of No4 Peterville was pleased that StreetSmart was such a simple campaign to run, saying: "StreetSmart is such a great way to raise money for charity -‐ it's so easy to give just £1, and they all add up!" Cornwall has the third highest number of rough sleepers in the UK and, with support from the generous diners throughout the county, the money raised will make a vital difference. Bernie Tullin, Manager of Cornwall Women's Refuge Trust, is delighted with the funding that StreetSmart has secured, saying: "Cornwall Women's Refuge Trust would like to acknowledge and thank StreetSmart for their continued support and specifically the public for their generous donations. With this year's donation we hope to buy a new larder fridge and dining room table and eight chairs. Our existing table was a second hand donation and the chairs have already all been repaired as a result of wear and tear." James Milton, Southern England Foodbank Network Manager, is delighted with the funding that StreetSmart has secured for Foodbanks in Cornwall, saying: "With the economic pressures pushing more Cornwall residents into food crisis, foodbanks in the Trussell Trust network now operate from 20 locations around the county. The Trussell Trust is immensely grateful for StreetSmart's help to these vital local charities, enabling emergency food parcels to those facing real hunger in Cornish communities". Corinna Langford at St Petroc's Society is grateful for the money raised by the campaign saying: "St Petroc's Society are yet again delighted to receive a significant donation from StreetSmart and the people who have supported this initiative in Cornwall. The money will continue to support our cold weather provisions throughout the winter months, when we provide shelter, a place of safety and warmth during some of the harshest weather conditions -‐ this is all made possible by the generous donations of the StreetSmart campaign."

Each year, a cookery master-class from a celebrity chef, followed by a book signing opens the festival. Ben Fogle explores the Call of the Wild in UK theatre tour Top TV adventurer takes to UK stages in first major solo tour Photographs Credit: Martin Hartley
TV adventurer Ben Fogle has undertaken some of the most physically and mentally demanding challenges known to man; he has raced the Marathon des Sables - dubbed the ‘toughest footrace on Earth’ – which crosses the Sahara where temperatures can exceed 50°C; he has rowed across the Atlantic Ocean; he has reached the South Pole on foot; he has crossed the Empty Quarter; and he has lived in the wilds of some of the most inhospitable environments. All of which, comes despite being a self-confessed urbanite. Now the adventuring presenter and best-selling author is undertaking a new challenge; his first-ever major solo theatre tour, as he takes to stages across the UK to recount how he was drawn to, and became so enamoured by, a life in the wild with his brand new ‘audience with…’ style lecture show, Call of the Wild, presented by Speakers from the Edge, in association with Rohan and Garmin UK. Speaking ahead of the tour, Ben said “This is the first time I have ever done anything like this. I have done talks before but this is more sharing my life and adventures with the audience.” He continues “It is the story of how I got to where I am today and of how someone who grew up in London ended up working in the furthest, wildest corners of the world and how it's made me the person that I am. It will be really nice to actually go and meet people and hopefully leave them feeling inspired. That’s the idea. I am nervous about doing live shows to thousands of people at all those different venues but if you don’t have any nerves, something is wrong.” Ben continues, “I am super excited to perform at the Minack. I have always been fascinated by the theatre and it was the first venue I selected for my national tour. The more rain the better. It will certainly suit my tales of adventure. I love Cornwall and spent a great deal of my childhood there in and around Penzance and St Ives. I was recently filming ITV Countrywise in Marazion and St Michael's mount for a new series on in October. I love the coastline. Penzance, and Cornwall in general, remind me of my childhood.” Call of the Wild is touring UK theatres in autumn 2015 and will be showing at the Minack Theatre, Penzance, on Wednesday, 7 October - to book tickets contact the Box Office on 01736 810181, or visit www.uk.patronbase.com/_Minack For further details, visit www.speakersfromtheedge.com

Tickets are now available from the hotel direct (Tel: 01326 312 734) for the Dinner and House Party @ £39 per person which includes a two course Cornish Surf and Turf Buffet or from 9pm House Party tickets are £20 per person.
My Favourite Book: The quotes of Oscar Wilde, the man was ahead of his time and was extremely witty, (unlike me)
My Favourite film: ‘It’s a wonderful life’ – a timeclass classic proving that angels really do exist!
If you would like to continue the celebration the following day you can stay the night with rooms from £45 per room which will include Breakfast in the Brasserie on the Friday morning. Marie Curie needs your help so that the 27 Marie Curie Nurses in Cornwall can continue to provide care and support to people living with a terminal illness and their families.
Luxury item I last bought: Sadly I am a sucker for expensive aftershave.. I love Bleu by Chanel
Join us for this great festive celebration and help make a real difference in your local community.
My Favourite Food: Can you really beat a home cooked roast dinner? Absolutely love roast beef with all the trimmings.. or going to Amanazi in town (ok I’ll admit they are a client for air conditioning but the food is fantastic)

What Makes Me Happy: Is seeing two elderly people holding hands walking around the harbour or just sitting down enjoying an ice cream together

My Hobbies: Tennis, tennis and more tennis, oh and keeping an eye on Plymouth Argyle of course, I also take a keen interest in my wife’s hobby of horses.
Life would be simpler if... People communicated more by actually talking (an old fashioned concept I know) instead of texting and using facebook to let us know that they have taken the dog for a walk and had a cup of tea
My Favourite item of clothing: My Dressing gown after a long day! (love my slippers too but don’t tell anyone)
My top tip: There is no such thing as a free lunch
My Simple pleasure: Watching the TV series ‘Suits’, its pure fantasy and escapism in the world of Law in the good old US of A
My Proudest moment: Apart from family, qualifying as university lecturer.
