A new scheme designed to combine charitable fund-raising with the chronicling of Cornish life stories has been launched with the biography of a Falmouth man who was a shipping agent for almost half a century. "All In A Lifetime's Work," by Steve Pellow, now 84, is the first in a planned "Local Lives" series of books for Cancer Research UK ghost-written by retired Cornish journalist Mike Truscott. As a busy shipping agent constantly on call, Steve witnessed the dramatic, the amusing, the mystifying and, just occasionally, the scarcely credible. Representing G C Fox & Co, which was Falmouth's biggest and oldest shipping agency, Steve's work included direct involvement in many casualties - among them one of the greatest shipwreck sagas of the 20th Century. He was also on board the last ship to sink in Falmouth's waters - escaping with just minutes to spare before she went down! That wasn't the only time he had that sinking feeling. He had his share of personal mishaps when boarding large vessels at sea from a tiny working boat - not surprisingly, given the need to embark and disembark in all weathers. There was also his own "Mary Celeste moment," with a surprise discovery when he boarded a coaster stranded on rocks . . . plus his unforgettably chilling experience of Russian "hospitality" at the height of the Cold War. Among lighter moments, Steve recalls the little-known occasion when a solo sailor went aground off Flushing . . . shortly after famously completing an historic circumnavigation of the globe! His earlier years as a shipping agent belonged to an altogether different era, when the port of Falmouth was bursting at the seams. He relives the time when it was nothing unusual to have some 20 large ships alongside and in dock, often with two or even three abreast. Steve also takes readers back to the Second World War, with vivid childhood memories of how Falmouth suffered at the hands of the German bombers during the biggest conflict in history. The book has been funded, designed and produced by Mike Truscott and his wife Janet and is being promoted, also free of charge, by Eventy Marketing and Public Relations, of Penryn. (And TR11 Magazine) "All In A Lifetime's Work" is now on sale at the Cancer Research UK shop in Webber Street, Falmouth, at the special limited edition price of £4.95, with all proceeds going direct to the charity. Orders can also be placed by phoning the shop, 01326 211872.

Sian is a lovely 4 year old black Lurcher who came to Dogs Trust Ilfracombe from Scotland. She is a very affectionate girl who loves to go out for long walks and have a paddle in our stream. Sian has spent some time with our training and behaviour advisor, learning that the car is fun and takes you to fantastic places! She is full of beans and will play with her toys for hours. As Sian was originally a stray, we would like her to go to a home with older children. She walks nicely when out with other dogs but would prefer to be the only pet in the home as she does like all the attention for herself. Sian likes company so someone there with her most of the time would make her day. If you think you can give Sian, the loving, forever home she deserves, then please give our Canine Carers a call at our Ilfracombe Rehoming Centre on 01271 812709, we are open every day between 12noon and 4pm except Wednesday when we are open from 4.30pm until 7.30pm.

th
Anniversary of The King Charles Mummers This is a very special year for the King Charles Mummers as they celebrate seventy-five years of the society. The Mummers is one of Falmouth’s oldest drama groups and was begun by three enthusiasts in 1940, putting on plays in the “old” Parish Hall using six foot flats and with the help of the rector’s wife, Mrs Roxby, who had to open and close the drapes at the appropriate moments.
The plays were also performed locally and the team particularly liked to entertain wounded soldiers and visit the Ack Ack site on the Golf Course where the Beds and Herts regiment was in residence. It was here that they managed to scrounge chocolate which was a rare and rationed commodity. During this time they raised £1000 for charity, a considerable sum for those days. The very first play was “Wurzel Flummery” which was very popular with amateur societies during the war years and since then the repertoire has included costume dramas, farce and murder mysteries. Our celebration play is a comedy, 'Fish out of Water' by Derek Benfield directed by Clive Morris which will be performed from Thursday 12th November until th Saturday 14 November. The Mummers would very much like to thank all those in the locality who have supported them loyally over the years, particularly the church and patrons. Please come and help us celebrate 75 years of drama! A Thanksgiving Service at the Parish church has been arranged for Sunday 20th September at 10.30 a.m followed by a celebration lunch at The Greenbank Hotel for £20. Ex-members and patrons would be most welcome. Please contact either Robert Martin 01326 211937 or Pat Veale 01326 311698.

Lydia Vinnicombe NEW STAFF As you will realise a GP Surgery is more than the medical team alone. Behind the scenes an administration team are vital to the smooth running of the surgery. We are pleased, therefore, to introduce you to our new apprentice administrator. Lydia Vinnicombe is a Falmouth girl with a great love of horse riding. In fact a couple of years ago she came 5th in the David Broome Championship of Great Britain. She is already a great asset to the staff. You may seldom see the administrators but we are here to serve both staff and patients whenever our skills are needed.
INSPECTION ! Back in January Westover Surgery was inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The CQC is the independent regulator of health and social care. It monitors, inspects and regulates services to make sure they meet fundamental standards of quality and safety. We were very pleased with the results of our inspection. The inspectorate rated Westover as "good in all areas". Let me give you a handful of quotes from the report that we received. : We observed a patient centred team. : The practice had systems to help ensure patient safety. : The practice was clean and tidy. : There was an accessible complaints system in place. : The practice had a clear vision which had quality and safety as its top priority. We are proud of our Surgery and every member of the staff. FINALLY A piece of very exciting news! Provisional funding approval has been given to replace our existing building with new purpose built premises. This has involved lengthy and in depth discussion with the relevant authorities. While there remain a number of hurdles to tackle ahead of obtaining full and final approval, we are all very excited at the prospect of this wonderful opportunity. We will keep you updated as plans progress. WATCH THIS SPACE!!!

Early Years Fun
WESTOVER IN THE COMMUNITY. As we did in our last update we want to highlight some of the hobbies of our staff members. When you, as patients, come to us there is usually a situation of pain and vulnerability. We want to assure you that we are people with families and lives, not machines. With his love of the sea Dr. Georgelin is keen that children and young people are aware of the fun that can be had but also to instill the necessary respect that it demands. He is therefore involved in classes teaching just that. Furthermore he has just finished training as a Lifeguard, no small task and we congratulate him on his efforts. What a great hobby, satisfying his hobby and helping in the community too. Perfect! Next time we will introduce you to someone else from the team.

Are we forgetting how to cook? New survey reveals generational skills gap emerging in the kitchen A new survey by national veg box company Riverford has revealed that while 50% of people learned to cook from their family, 70% believe children today are not cooking with their parents as much as in previous generations. Yet it’s not just good food that they are missing out on.
“The best conversations I can remember having with my mother were while shelling peas and beans. Keeping the hands busy, and having a reason not to make eye contact, is a great way of taking conversation into areas that you would normally skirt around. If you need to have a potentially difficult chat with adolescent children, a pile of beans is a great way to bridge the silences and lubricate the flow,” says Riverford founder Guy Watson. Cooking is a wonderful way to spend time with children of all ages; many of the little jobs you do when cooking from scratch really appeal to them, and it can instil a lifelong interest in cooking and eating good food. Yet Guy believes that there has been a significant decline in activity in the huge majority of the nation’s kitchens. “I am convinced that a lack of traditional cooking skills, time and confidence in the kitchen is the main issue. Indeed, I suspect that two decades of celebrity chefs and primetime TV shows may have made cooking seem unattainably distant. Cookery programmes are a poor substitute for assimilating skills over years of growing up in an active kitchen; as a result we may be conversant with the language of a multicultural 21st century foodie, but many of us are at a loss as what to do with a Savoy cabbage or a piece of brisket.” To help avert the decline and celebrate the fun to be had, Riverford have created a generational cooking hub at www.riverford.co.uk/cooktogether. They are asking people to share their tips about how to get kids cooking, along with any photos or videos they may have of their children, nieces, nephews or grandchildren learning how to cook. Post them on Twitter, Instagram or YouTube, or directly on their Facebook page (www.facebook.com/riverford), using the hashtag #cooktogether. Steve and Lynn Allen who deliver Riverford veg boxes and recipe boxes to families in Cornwall say, “The summer holidays are a great time to get your children active in the kitchen. We think that there is so much knowledge out there about how to share cooking skills with younger generations, so we hope lots of people get fired up by this campaign and get involved.” Everyone who does so will be automatically entered into a competition to win a very special family holiday, and there are lots of runner up prizes too, including Riverford recipe boxes and veg boxes! www.riverford.co.uk/cooktogether
