FALMOUTH SOCIETY OF RAILWAY MODELLERS

Founded around two years ago, the Falmouth Society of Railway Modellers recently moved to a new meeting venue with full-‐time occupancy, and within approximately five minutes walk from the centre of Falmouth. While most grateful to the Budock Village Hall management committee for the use of a room on Friday evenings, our new meeting room allows us to have layouts permanently set up. Our first layout 'Titfield', based on the station used in the Ealing Studio's comedy film 'The Titfield Thunderbolt' is now complete and so, we are embarking on our next OO gauge project. This is a large continuous run mainline on which members will be able to run a wide variety of trains. We also have a small N gauge layout, which is being enthusiastically renovated. Railway modelling is a constructive, engaging and educational hobby where the creation of realistic models is achieved. It also allows for the observation of the national rail network, from the way it operates to its infrastructure and significantly, the environment and time-‐scale modelled. The Society meets at The Athenaeum Club, Kimberley Place, Falmouth weekly on Friday evenings from 7:30pm to 10pm and prospective new members with an interest in railway modelling, in any scale or gauge are always welcome. For more information, please visit our website at: http://fsrm.weebly.com or contact our secretary on 01326 319922. Exhibition: We will be holding pre-‐Christmas exhibition at Budock Village Hall, Budock Water, Falmouth, TR11 5DR th on Saturday 30 November 2013 from 10am to 4pm. Adults -‐ £2, Children -‐ £1.

TR11 Community Spirit Christmas and New Year The Christmas and New Year period can be jolly for some but lonely for other people. The following are some ideas about how to boost community spirit in your street during this time of year: • Hold a Mince Pie get-together - invite some neighbours round for a drink, mulled wine or a cuppa and a mince pie, even at short notice. You could either drop a note round, or just invite some in person. • Drop a Christmas card off to someone you may know. • If you have the voice, hold a street carol sing-along. • Offer a drink or cuppa on New Year's Eve or day. • Offer to keep an eye on houses or pets of neighbours who are away for a time. • And if you are lucky enough to have a white Christmas help to clear someone's path.

Using Up Those Christmas Leftovers Even the most organised Christmas host will have bits and pieces left after the final feast. Save yourself from dubious brussels sprout soup and turkey curry with these tips from Riverford. Turkey Stock Break up the carcass and put in a pan with stock veg (celery, onion, carrot, maybe some parsley stalks), garlic and peppercorns. Cover with cold water and simmer for 2 hours. Strain off the stock and store in the fridge (for a few days) or freezer. Turkey & Leek Gratin Make a roux with butter and flour and slowly whisk in turkey stock. Pour over cooked leeks and shredded turkey in a dish. Top with breadcrumbs mixed with fried bacon lardons and sage. Bake until bubbling. Turkey & Veg Pilaff Cook onion, garlic and curry powder in butter, and then stir in some rice. Add turkey stock, simmer and when the rice is almost tender add any chopped leftover veg. When cooked, stir through shredded cooked turkey and herbs. Festive Bread & Butter Pudding If you have any Christmas pudding left, crumble it into small pieces, and then mix the pieces into the custard in a bread and butter pudding recipe. It adds a warming spiced flavour. Bubble & Squeak Shred sprouts or cabbage and add to mashed potato. Mix together and cook in butter in a non-stick pan. Good with cold turkey and pickles. Caramelised Clementine’s Peel, slice across into rounds and caramelise in brown sugar in a heavy-bottomed pan. Serve with vanilla ice cream. Contact your local delivery team, Steve and Lynn Allen on 01208 368434 or visit www.riverford.co.ukfor more inspiring vegetable recipes.

Meet Natasha Berks -TR11 Business Owner of Second Hand Bookshop “Bookmark” 34 Arwenack St, Falmouth, TR11 3JB Tel:01326 211252 I have run my own businesses for over 25 years and never had a partner and sole owner only. I have learnt so much and feel I could teach all my hands on experiences to others wanting to be self employed and where better to do it than in my shop. There is a lot going on in this industry and it's been tough but with business experience and intelligence I am doing very well. Owning a second hand bookshop is the most wonderful job I have ever had and after many years of slog and learning the industry the shop is really starting to pay. It is a very immediate and connected existence. There is nothing more clear than giving feedback from the high street and as a sole owner of a 2nd hand bookshop I have learnt the tastes and market trends that men and woman prefer and with this knowledge I believe I can thrive in these harsh trading conditions and make my way. Specialising in Maritime, military, aviation, art, esoteric, poetry/plays and Cornish History we also have film, biographies...just come and see what we have it's a great space to be in. We buy books and respect any sale however large or small from large libraries, downsizing and on a more sensitive and personal level of life long collections. We can come to your home if it makes the whole event easier for you. I am surrounded by people’s life long collections of books and I'm touched by this every single day from finding old photos, letters, crushed flowers and train tickets for a journey to maybe a lover. Inside also are little inscriptions and awards that reflect the previous owners life and this can create a story within a story for the families or new owners. What can you leave in a kindle and what will a kindle say about you to your children or grandchildren when they lovingly sort through your collection? I have seen people cry and pour memories from deep within their souls when they have spotted a book they had as a child or a family member is in a book and they didn’t know. Two ladies spotted a children’s book in my shop recently and the memories and laughter poured from them it was a treat for everyone in the shop, my goodness are we going to lose this? Kindles have a place in this world I just believe we need to treat our senses and physically walk into a shop and smell, touch and browse for yourself as you don't know what you will find in a 2nd handbook shop and what book will find you and rest on your shelf for the next few decades and then the love starts all over again.

Going the exTRa mile - TR11 Business For those that aren’t already familiar with us, LA Valeting is based in the heart of Falmouth on the bustling Tregoniggie Industrial Estate. We set ourselves apart from the rest of the crowd by giving everything that personal touch, building a relationship with our customers- most of whom advocate our work and our message. The Owner and Founder of the business, Luke, first learnt to valet at the age of 14 on vehicles that include Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Ferrari and Land Rover to name but a few and now, LA Valeting have gone on to become one of the most prominent valeting businesses in the TR11 area and throughout wider parts of Cornwall due to the convenience offered by their mobile side of the company – LA Mobile Valeting. We will have some great discounts and promotions running throughout December so why not treat yourself or a loved one to a professionally valetted, showroomlooking car? Also, we are probably the only if not one of very few valeters offering Full Paint Correction as part of a Full Valet service, removing scratches, restoring colour and sealing in all of our craftsmanship with a protective waterproof coating. Call LA Valeting today on 07572 801405, speak to Luke and find out for yourself why it is best to choose LA.

Source 96.1 FM Community Radio Station for Falmouth and Penryn “The Tash Berks Show" does what it says on the tin. It's about my world and observations with a skip in the content. I was always interested in becoming a professional radio producer so left London and headed back to Falmouth to enroll on the Broadcasting course....who was I kidding? I bought a bookshop having never been in this industry before and realised there was so much to learn and very little time for a degree plus also I am not the studying type and more hands on. Then one day I heard there was to be a new community radio station and they needed volunteers so I jumped at the chance. I produce my own show, choose my own music and source my own guests. I also write the content for my show and know what style I want. I do not perform to any type of folk and stay true to myself. My aim is to make the listener feel the show is personal to them and company in their home whilst also hopefully they are having a good little jig.

KIDS GET GOING Charity

Meet Ruth Davis - Age 47, has two proud sons Mitch 14 and Ross 16, works for Dancer Daycare in Mylor; Fit to Wiggle and Rhythm and Rascals (Sat-Emmanuel Baptist Church weekly, 9.45-10.30am) with Embrace Dance Fitness; and is an active fundraiser! Goldilocks local lady Ruth recently shaved off her 2ft of hair for charity Kids Get Going which supports british disability sport. www.kidsgetgoing.com She explains her journey , “Having done lots of different ways of fundraising in the past, such as abseiling and going on a zipwire, this time I wanted to do something that meant a lot and was ultimately personal to me. It was always going to be a part of my journey but the fact we can raise a fantastic amount of money makes the experience so rewarding.” The main target for Ruth, together with 6 other women, is to run 26.2 miles in the Paris Marathon, 6th April, 2014. As part of their Bupa training plan they will be running the Downton 1/2 Marathon then Falmouth 1/2 Marathon next year. The target is to raise £5000 and between the women they already have £1000! The women chose the charity as two have disabled children and several of them work with people with disabilities. Please support them by Donating at: www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/themarathongirls Ruth’s hair has been sent away to the Prince’s Trust to be made into wigs for children with cancer. TRESCOBEAS SURGERY

I often get quizzed on GP commissioning and what is now being done to improve services. At Trescobeas we are at the forefront of this process because we see it as a golden opportunity to shape the services our patients most need. Responsibility for commissioning services now lies with the Kernow Clinical Commissioning Group (KCCG) and with it a new GP led structure is in place. At Trescobeas we meet regularly with other local surgeries to decide what priorities we have within Falmouth and Penryn. This gets fed up to a Carrick forum and if agreed eventually forms part of the KCCGs county wise priority list. The KCCG commissions many services including Hospitals, Out of Hours and Community Services but not GPs, ensuring we do not have a conflict of interest. Against a backdrop of rising demand and flat lining budgets the KCCG have had to work hard to establish priorities. Much work is being done on reducing costly hospital admissions. Here, the use of Community services (Community Matron, District Nurses, Early intervention team, GPs etc) to keep people at home for longer is a priority. Treating people at home or in their local area is often best for the patient as well as being more cost effective. There is also a big drive to reduce A&E admissions as there may be more appropriate places to get treated. Outside of A&E or your GP you can see a Dr or Nurse at Cardrew Walk in centre (Redruth) 7 days a week from 8am to 8pm (no appointment required), Falmouth Hospital Minor Injuries can treat fractures or sprains or NHS Direct 0845 4647 can give you confidential medical advice.
