Kerry Multiple Sclerosis Wellness EventFirst Ever Selfcare Seminar In Kerry, For People Living With Ms
THE ROSE HOTEL Tralee will play host to the first ever MS selfcare seminar in Kerry on Saturday, February 29th. The Kerry Multiple Sclerosis Wellness Event will take a holistic approach to empowering attendees to manage their care by focusing on exercise, nutrition and mindset. Expert speakers on the day will be Neurologist Dr Helena Moore, Coach Ailis Brosnan, Dietician Conor Kerley and Physiotherapist Professor Susan Coote. Attendees will also benefit from a multitude of exhibitors and therapists throughout the event.
The Kerry Multiple Sclerosis Wellness Event was organised by Susan Carey and Jillian O’Sullivan on seeing the opportunity to introduce more health and lifestyle services here in Kerry, for people living with MS. “Traditionally, the information made available in relation to living with and
treating MS is all medical research based intel. What’s different about our event is that it is lifestyle based, supporting people to take a more hands on approach to their selfcare”, says Jillian.
“This isn’t about learning how to stop what’s happening to you, it’s about learning how to manage it. We’re building a really positive day here, with approachable speakers on hand who will help to empower all of us to take better care of ourselves. With just 9,000 people in Ireland living with MS, it can sometimes be an isolating illness to deal with. We’re really proud to be bringing this opportunity to the community here in Kerry, rather than perhaps more mainstream centralised locations like Cork, Limerick or Dublin”, added Susan. The Kerry Multiple Sclerosis Wellness Event is free of charge to attend, but with limited capacity booking in
Susan Carey of Kerry MS, Dr Ailis Brosnan, Daniel Griffin (Asst Food and Beverage Manage Rose Hotel) and Jillian O’Sullivan. Photo Joe Hanley advance is essential. The event will take place in The Rose Hotel from 10.30am – 3pm on Saturday, February 29th and is open to anyone living with MS, or perhaps supporting someone who is living with the illness. This event wouldn’t be possible
with the generous support of our sponsors; including Novartis, The Rose Hotel, Bon Secours Hospital Tralee and Fit Fusion. For more information, search Kerry Multiple Sclerosis Wellness Event on eventbrite. ie or call us on 0857424114 or 0863846359.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE AND USC Question I’m a full-time minimum wage PAYE worker. Does the increase in the national minimum wage mean that I pay more Universal Social Charge? Answer The minimum wage increased from €9.80 to €10.10 on 1 February 2020. A person working full-time (39 hours per week) and earning the minimum wage was previously earning €19,873 per year. They now earn €20,484 per year. From 1 February, USC rates also changed slightly to make sure that this increase in pay for minimum wage workers is not subject to the 4.5% USC charge. This was done by increasing the income threshold of the 2% band. The new thresholds now look like this: Standard rate of USC (up to 31 January 2020) from 1 February 2020 Rate Income band Income band 0.5% Up to €12,012 Up to €12,012 2% From €12,012.01 to €19,874 From €12,012.01 to €20,484 4.5% From €19,874.01 to €70,044 From €20,484.01 to €70,044 8% From €70,044.01 and over From €70,044.01 and over So, in 2019, if you earned €19,874, your total USC for the year was ({0.5% of €12,012} €60.06 + {2% of €7,862} €157.24) = €217.30. This meant your USC was €18.11 per month, or €4.18 per week. From 1 February 2020, if you earn €20,484 per year, your annual USC will be ({0.5% of €12,012} €60.06 + {2% of €8,742} €169.44) = €229.50. This means your USC is €19.13 per month, or €4.41 per week. So, with the increase in the national minimum wage, you will pay €12.20 more USC per year. This deduction will be made from your gross salary. Your increased salary will continue to be subject to the standard rate of income tax. This means you also pay slightly more income tax after 1 February 2020.

OVER 16 YEARS BRINGING STUDENTS FROM ABROAD TO TRALEE! EACH YEAR, WE BRING HUNDREDS OF STUDENTS TO TRALEE TO LEARN ENGLISH (AND ENJOY KERRY!)
WE NEED HOST FAMILIES! DO YOU HAVE A SPARE ROOM ? Are you interested in introducing your kids to cultural diversity? Interested in exposing your children to a foreign language? Need a little extra cash? (A host family can earn up to €510 per week)
A few popular questions about being a Host Family ...
Do I have to live in Tralee to take a student?
NO! We have a lot of teenage groups, especially during the Summer months, who would love to live outside of Tralee. A lot of adult students prefer to live closer to the town so that they don't have to be depending on the host family or taxis to go out at night or go to work.
I live on my own - can I be a host family?
Yes, of course! As long as you provide a room and meals and plenty of interaction and the student feels welcome in your home, that's perfect How many students can I take? Up to 3 students at one time I would prefer to have girls - is that ok? Yes! You can decide what type of students you prefer (male, female, teenage, adult and so on) and we will match students with your family as best we can. We will always ask you before assigning a student to your house.
“
Roisin, Tralee: A very positive experience hosting students from CSOE... school is so supportive and organised (guess I could also mention how handy the cash is!) Anne B, Tralee: This was my first experience in hosting students . .. apprehensive at first but my experience has been a positive one. I have hosted students from, Spain, Germany and Italy. It has provided me with great insights and an opportunity to learn about different cultures. Aileen, Kilflynn: Definitely the best company I've dealt with... professionalism and knowledge of what both the student and host family needs are... second to none! Noreen, Tralee: Anne and the team at Celtic have been very flexible with me, giving me students when suits us as a family, lovely having that little bit extra to get those treats we all deserve

WE ALSO PROVIDE OUR STUDENTS WITH WORK PLACEMENTS! We are delighted with the feedback from local businesses: “Very easy to deal with, very professional in placing their students” Brian, Munster Robes
“We honestly benefit greatly from working with CSOE and I couldn't recommend them highly enough. Apart from the increase in productivity in the workplace, we get lovely girls whom we all become very fond of and always keep in touch when they finish” Gillian, Pamela Scott Fashions “We have had 2 students, a tiler and a photography student. Both have been very pleasant and great workers. It has been a huge benefit to our business to have some extra help on jobs” Alan, Bathrooms4U
WHAT’S INVOLVED IN WORK PLACEMENT?
Celtic School of English in Tralee organise English & Work Placement programmes for foreign students coming to Tralee for a few weeks at a time. Some students are attending the equivalent of a vocational leaving cert and require a taste of what working life is like in their chosen field. Other students are a little older and are doing apprenticeship programmes. Generally, they have a couple of years of experience and want to learn more from Irish companies and be able to compare work practices. Quite often, these students are taking time off work in their own country and coming to Ireland to gain experience with the permission of their own employers and are, perhaps, looking to make ties between their own employers and their new employers in Ireland. At Celtic School of English, we try to find the most suitable companies for students to do their work experience. We find the most suitable host family and we provide English classes to help students with the language they need to live in Ireland for a few weeks.
TYPICAL QUESTIONS ARE:
Do I have to pay the student? No, it is a voluntary programme - no payment required How many hours should the students work? Typically 25-30 hours per week but this may depend on the type of student and the level of skill they have. Most students come for 3 or 4 weeks What about insurance? Students carry their own insurance from their school/college
OPEN DAY: MON FEB 17T

What type of jobs do they do? Everything! Car mechanics to office admin to plumbers to website designers and everything in between. Think of a once-off job, such as building a data-base of customers, or a helping hand for everyday tasks - these are times where a work placement student can really be of benefit. Other benefits are... • Fresh insight: Students bring a fresh look at how work is carried out. They want to learn but they also want to be able to share ideas • New Culture: Students bring a new culture into a work placement – a new course of conversation – a new outlook • Short-term or long-term: Most students come for between 2 and 8 weeks of work experience. It is also possible to have students for up to 6 months Bridge a gap: Work placements students can help companies complete everyday tasks when there is a bigger project to complete

Showcasing the work of Clare artists Vivienne Bogan, Kathryna Cuschieri, Nicola Henley and Jane Seymour the Elemental Fusion Exhibition will officially launch in the Siamsa Tíre Galleries on Friday 14th February at 6pm. In association with glór, Ennis these four artists have come together for this exhibition, based on themes of gender, identity and place. Vivienne Bogan works with mixed media on paper, found materials and experimental print techniques. Glass Artist, Kathryna Cuschieri captures the fragile natural eco splendour that is slowly eroding in Clare. Textile Artist, Nicola Henley’s work explores our native birds - their relationship to sky, sea and land, reminding us of our own connection with the natural environment. Ceramicist, Jane Seymour completes the foursome, creating vessels made by smoke firing, and also working figuratively, etching into the unfired clay. Elemental Fusion features a collection of work, pieces mirroring one another in form, shape, colour or texture and yet totally different, unique and independent. The exhibition opens on 14th February and runs up to the 27th March. Admission is free

A Love story for Valentine’s 16 What’s What’sHappening HappeningIn InTralee.. Tralee..
Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read
Young love Its dangerous, exciting, anxiously breath taking with joy jumping highs and fear frightening low’s. The only emotion that puts us humans into a dizzy tizzy when it calls unexpectedly. The truth of real love is that it arrives in all shapes and sizes, gender and colour at any age and at any time. Its very much alive. Not to be questioned but felt. The rain fell heavy the dull grey drops trickle down the window pain of the classroom. She was 15, how would she know what love was some would say? Yet she did. The truth about certain things at 15 were uncertain, she did not know much about anything. Her pretty much guarantee was uncertain. She knew cornflakes with hot milk and sugar never told lies. Dairy milk chocolate never changed its taste. Franks chips with peas on a Friday were always there. Social engagement meant hanging out at the weekend, even if it was under a tree with the rain and cold as added company. Telling stories late into the night. Sitting on a cold wall that was uncomfortable, yet it was the most comfortable place in all the world. Innocence wrapped around in those that believed they were all grown up. The truth about certain things were uncertain. Being under the thumb of the education system allowed her to see from across the classroom Sudden and profound. She was about to learn so much more then the teachings of this morning class. Love was not a compulsory subject, no warning, no synopsis, no idea of what was to come. She still believes this when it comes to love. If love was to be a subject, we would never learn about it. Its one of the many beautiful gifts that we get to experience while here. She looked beyond her classmates to the far side and was welcomed with a smile of pure beauty that lit up her eyes of deep blue and her face that invited friendship and adventure. Her reflection from the classroom window added brightness to that dull day and Friday 14th February 2020
rain that fell. The truth about certain things are uncertain. The truth about love is unexpected. She was struck with an ache of powerful emotion all at once certain to have her second guessing at the experience at hand. She was also struck at the truth of it, falling falling falling for her friend that was almost certainly not going to fall for her. The truth about certain things are uncertain. Cupid though on this occasion had something else in mind. Gender, colour, culture, age and time all together can be cupids rhyme. When the intention is real and the emotion pure then cupid will most certainly open the door. She was confused and distracted the mornings events and teaching continued as normal. However, her world had changed with a bang never to be the same again. Bravery and courage are serious pals especially when met with the truth about love. They were aids to being and staying true to herself at the risk of her honesty of love towards her friend. The dream that was real suddenly broke when the bell rang for brake and she jumped awoke. When home time came her bag was twice as heavy leaving, carrying love without scripture can be a serious weight, no certainty to the truth of
the days tail. What to do was the question she asked herself. Looking back now she believed cupid had answered. Say how you feel because it is real, cupid exchanged a fair and reasonable deal. She waited till that night the weekend and social action. Here goes, heart thumping, legs jumping, and the shakes revealed in her words. She approached her friend and gently said I need to confess something strange and maybe a mess. I love you; you see this is sincerely true for me. Her friend did not move but admired the bravery and courage she did meet. Cupid was surely at both of there feet. She took her hand and walked shortly ahead and in private looked at her friend with the greatest respect. Thank you for telling me I’m overwhelmed at what to say. Nothing needed saying as the truth was certain, yet the uncertainty awaits. Till cupid and intentions that are pure and true brought a kiss of deep meaning to me and to you. Love was allowed and two people to never to be the same again, yet free. HAPPY VALENTINES WRITTEN BY FIDELMA FITZGERALD

One Change but all Change and Tralee the big winner: While there was lots of action on at the weekend including GAA and rugby on the sports fields some of the most exciting contests took place in the count centres all around the country. And for this constituency that action was in the Aura in Killarney where the boxes were opened from 9am on Saturday morning. And as they were opened the buzz from the tallymen was the huge amount of votes that were going to Sinn Fein. Any fears by those involved in the party in Kerry that the Ferris seat might have been in trouble was soon banished as Pa Daly was getting big numbers from every box that was opened and from areas where Sinn Fein never got a vote. Those listening to radio (including our excellent Radio Kerry team) and television coverage, or as each election passes more and more are following things on line, the same story was emerging all around the country and the sense was that something seismic was happening. As they tallies continued to come in the other big story was that once again the opinion poll that put Danny Healy Rea in trouble was being proved to be wrong for the second general election in a row. Yes the votes of both Healy Reas were down a little but between them they would end up with over 30% of the first preference of the vote. And the final picture that began to emerge was that sitting TD John Brassil was
Friday 14th February 2020
going to be in trouble and that the Fianna Fail strategy of running three candidates was not going to win them a second seat. The question was becoming which one of the three would get the seat with Norma Foley ahead from the start. The Tally: By 11am the tallies were complete and the figures were: Michael Healy Rae 16,695, Pa Daly 15,604, Brendan Griffin 10,431, Danny Healy Rae 8638, Norma Foley 6892, John Brassil 5421, Cleo Murphy 4182, Mike Kennelly 3979, Norma Foley 3711 with Sonny Foran on 1050 followed by John Bowler, Ted Cronin and Sean O’Leary. The Official First Count: It was not until hours later that the actual first count was announced. Returning Officer and his staff did a great job over their long two day and he made the declaration that from an electorate of 116,885 the total valid poll was 78,209 with 543 being invalid meaning a quota of 12,945. And both Micheal Healy Rae on 16,818 and Pa Daly with 15,733 were elected on that first count. Brendan Griffin will have been very happy with his 10,296 making him one of Fine Gaels top vote getters but he will be a little worried that the party vote was down 16% from 2016. He was followed by Danny Healy Rae with 8663 and while this was down from 9997 it was plenty for him to be almost sure of retaining his seat. Norma Foley on 6856 led John Brassil by 1,425 and this gap would prove to be far
too big for the sitting TD to pull back. While those of us who love the whole election process and enjoy it for a long serving public representative to lose their seat – and knowing this for nearly two days before it was official is a real tough place to be. Cleo Murphy will take a lot from her 4122 first preference vote while Mike Kennelly (3974), Norma Moriarty (3,767) and Sonny Foran (1109) were well ahead of the other three. Now I am not going to go through all the counts made up of the distribution of surplus and eliminations. The next two candidates Brendan Griffin and Danny Healy Rae were elected on the 6th Count with Norma Foley becoming the counties new TD, but definitely not new to politics as the Foley family has a long and proud tradition of public service. Tralee the Real Winner: From having no TD based in the town and with the Spring dynasty now in the past Tralee now has two. There will certainly be an expectation and an onus for them to deliver but we better let them settle into their seats in the Dail first!! Pa Daly in his speech as well referenced the work done by Martin Ferris over the last 20 years and also the support he got from his home area and from the clubs he is involved in – Tralee Dynamos and Na Gaeil. With his brother kicking a point in Croke Park and winning an All Ireland medal with Na Gaeil last week it has been some few weeks for the Daly family. Norma Foley spoke of how
Call Chris or Colette Tel: 066-7126399 or e-mail : traleeadvertiser@gmail.com
proud her father would be as she stood on the stage as a TD a job he did for 18 years as well as they huge backing she got from family and from the town and far beyond. This week will be a very happy and satisfying week for the TD’s and their families, their canvassers who crossed the whole county over the last three weeks and their supporters. How long will they be in the Dail? Now that’s the big question! In truth no one wants to do this all over again in the next six months. Sinn Fein have moved from the ditch (as in the hurlers on) to the centre circle and they need to find a combination that will give them 80 seats plus with an agreed Programme for Government. So what’s the best case scenario- Sinn Fein / Fianna Fail and the Greens – not so much a rainbow coalition but a green/green/ green coalition! How long will it last – now that’s the million or billion dollar question.

HELLO EVERYONE! HAPPY FRIDAY!
This week I’m going to be helping out all you gals who want make Valentine’s Day all about YOU. As The Pussycat Dolls say “I Don’t Need A Man To Make Me Feel Good”. There’s plenty of ways you can enjoy Valentine’s Day without having ‘that someone special’ in your life. I’ve had more than a few Valentines of celebrating me so here are my 10 top tips on a Valentine’s Day for YOU!
10 Ways to Own V-Day! 1. BUY YOURSELF SOMETHING: You don’t need to spend money on anyone else. This is your day. Spoil yourself. Get that high end bronzer you’ve been ogling the past 2 months, (Urban Decay Beached Brinzer is fab!), get yourself that book you’ve been dying to read, splurge on those shoes that nearly have a hole in them from you staring in at them from outside the shop window. Retail therapy is a necessity for you this Valentines. BUY YOURSELF SOMETHING! 2. GET A WASH & BLOW-DRY: Don’t lie, having your hair blow dried professionally feels amazing. When your hair feels great, you feel great. Who doesn’t love a good hair day? A wash & blow dry from a hair salon costs in and around €25, you’re worth it. 3. PAINT YOUR NAILS: I don’t know about you but when my nails are painted or when I’ve got my gels on, I just feel a bit more together and on top of things. It has me all like ‘Hey world, I’m ready for anything today’! So give those tips a fresh coat or if you’re like me and can’t paint your nails for love nor money, go get shellacs, gels, whatever you please! 4. WEAR MATCHING UNDERWEAR: Just because you’ve no plans for anyone to see said underwear, doesn’t say you can’t do it for yourself. We all know and love that feeling of fabulosity when our underwear matches. 5. HAVE FUN WITH YOUR GIRLS: As Carrie Bradshaw once said, “Maybe our girlfriends are our soulmates and guys are just people to have fun with.” Plan a fun night in with takeaway and wine or a night out on the town with even more wine. Either way you’re guaranteed laughter, fun and maybe a little bit of tears over horrible exes! 6. DRESS UP: If you are going to head out, get your glad rags on. Wear the high heels that make your legs go on for days and

So that’s it for this week! Hope you all enjoyed this week’s light hearted post! Have a great weekend and I’ll be back here next week with more beauty related goodness! that dress you have in your wardrobe that you’ve been saving, look like a million dollars, feel like a million dollars! DRESS DOWN: On the flip side, if you’re staying in dress down and cosy. Fluffy socks, comfy clothes and hair on top of the head. You know you’re fabulous anyway. HOME TREATMENTS: Whip out the face mask, foot cream, hair mask & other pamper goodies and turn your home into a spa. Tonight it’s all about you. HEAD TO THE CINEMA : I love a good cinema trip, really calms the mind. Just maybe avoid it on actual Valentine’s Day as you may be surrounded by couples. IF ALL ELSE FAILS… At least all the Valentines chocolate is reduced Saturday, and we all know it tastes so much better when it’s half price!

Hello everyone!
Hope you’re having a great week. So last week I talked about having a good relationship with food, so following on from that this week I ‘m going to talk about how you can track your progress without the scales. I know the mornings are a little dark now but it’s still great to get up early and make the most of the day! This week I’m talking all about how to stay motivated & the benefits of morning exercise! (Or just exercising before you start your day) I myself am not the best morning person, at all. But I’ve been researching the benefits of morning exercise and I must say, it makes me think twice about pressing that snooze button! •
•
•
•
•
When you exercise early in the morning, it “jump starts” your metabolism and keeps it elevated for hours. That means you’re burning more calories all day long just because you exercised in the morning! Exercising first thing in the morning is the only way to assure something else won’t get in the way of your workout. If you are hit with a really busy day your exercise could be put on the back burner! Exercising in the morning energizes you for the day, not to mention that gratifying feeling of virtue you have knowing you’ve done something disciplined and good for you. More than 90% of those who exercise consistently have a morning fitness routine. If you want to exercise on a regular basis, the odds are in your favour if you squeeze your workout into the a.m. Studies have shown that women and men who wake up early for regular exercise sleep better than those who routinely exercise in the evening. Since exercise stimulates your body, when you exercise at night, it becomes more difficult to fully relax
Rebecca Friday 14th February 2020

and drift into peaceful sleep. By knocking out your exercise first thing, you will approach your food differently throughout the day. You will be proud of yourself for getting up and burning some calories, so why sabotage it with an unhealthy lunch? Instead, you will want to continue your positive choices by eating foods that make you feel fresh and energized.
HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED!
Think Positive: I am a huge believer in the power of positive thinking! Instead of saying ‘I hope I don’t gain weight’ say ‘I will lose weight’. Positive thoughts can turn into positive things. Make Goals: To help stay on track I find it’s best to make goals, both longterm(monthly) and shortterm(daily/weekly). If you don’t make goals it is very easy to fall off the wagon! Visualise: Visualise yourself when you are at your goal weight/ fitness level. Buy a dress the size you strive to be and hang it in your room, print out motivational quotes and images and stick them up! Do whatever works best for you.
Reward Yourself: For every goal you reach it’s good to have a corresponding reward. For example, a new pair of shoes, a spa trip, new workout gear, a night out with the girls. Change up your workout: If you stick to the same workout routine everyday you could get bored and your workouts could become less effective. It’s good to change up your workout routine every week or so to keep both your body and mind motivated.

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! BIG FARM
A Texan rancher comes to Ireland and meets a Kerry farmer. The Texan says, “Takes me a whole goddam day to drive from one side of my ranch to the other.” The Kerry farmer says, “Ah sure, I know, sir. We have tractors like that over here too.”
JOB DONE
A Spanish singer chatting on television used the word ‘manana’. When asked what that meant, he said it means “maybe the job will be done to-morrow, maybe the next day, maybe the day after that, next week, next month or next year. Who cares?” An Irishman in the conversation, Shay Brennan, was then asked if there’s an Irish equivalent. “No. In Ireland we don’t have a word to describe that level of urgency”
WHERE IS MULLIGAN?
Two Irishmen met and one said to the other, “Have ye seen Mulligan lately, Pat?” Pat said, “Well, I have and I haven’t.” His friend asked, “well what d’ye mean by that?” Pat said, “It’s like this, y’see…I saw a chap who I thought was Mulligan, and he saw a chap that he thought was me. And when we got up to one another…it was neither of us.”
OUR HOUSE
Murphy was selling his house, and put the matter in an agent’s hands. The agent wrote up a sales blurb for the house that made wonderful reading. After Murphy read it, he turned to the agent and asked, “Have I got all you say there?” The agent said, Certainly ye have…Why do you ask? Murphy replied, cancel the sale, the place sounds grand to me
OHH MY GOD!
O’Connell was staggering home with a small Paddy in his back pocket when he slipped and fell heavily. Struggling to his feet, he felt something wet running down his leg. “Please, God,” he implored, “let it be blood!”
FRIDAY NIGHT
driving very erratically. He pulled the man over and asked him if he had been drinking that evening. ‘’Aye, so I have. ‘Tis Friday, you know, so me and the lads stopped by the pub where I had six or seven pints. And then there was something called ‘Happy Hour’ and they served these mar-gar-itos which are quite good. I had four or five o’ those. Then I had to drive me friend Mike home and o’ course I had to go in for a couple of Guinness -- couldn’t be rude, ye know. Then I stopped on the way home to get another bottle for later...’’ And the man fumbled around in his coat until he located his bottle of whiskey, which he held up for inspection. The officer sighed, and said, ‘’Sir, I’m afraid I’ll need you to step out of the car and take a breathalyzer test.’’ ‘’Why? Don’t ye believe me?’’
LAST NIGHT, MY WIFE GOT MAD AT ME FOR KICKING SOME ICE CUBES UNDER THE REFRIGERATOR... but now it’s just water under the fridge.
A WIFE ASKS HER HUSBAND IF SHE WERE TO DIE, WOULD HE REMARRY?...
and her husband says “yes I would remarry I like living a married life and spending time with someone else. The wife gets uncomfortable and proceeds to ask “ well would you let her live in our house?” And the husband says “yes I’d let her live here there’s nothing wrong with this house.” That worried the wife more, so then she asks “well would you let her sleep in our bed?” And the husband says “yes I like my bed and I don’t want to get rid of it I’d let her sleep in it.” This only makes the wife more worried so she feels compelled to say “well at least promise me you will never let her use my golf clubs.” The husband say “don’t worry she will never use your clubs, she’s left handed.”

WHAT’S THE BEST SEVEN-SEAT SUV FOR TALL TEENAGERS?
I’ve got three kids, two pretty tall teenagers and one in a child seat. We use the rear seats a lot on short journeys and occasionally for journeys over an hour and a half. What should I get if I want an SUV for under £45k?.... HJ HJ says .. My money would go on a Skoda Kodiaq or Hyundai Santa Fe. Alternatively, if you’d prefer a more premium choice, a pre-registered Volvo XC90 is within reach and would be a lovely family car.
IS IT SAFE TO CHARGE A BATTERY USING A STANDARD NON-SMART BATTERY CHARGER WITHOUT DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY?
My wife’s Suzuki Vitara petrol is only used for occasional short trips and the battery is running low on charge. Can I charge it in situ using a standard non-smart battery charger without disconnecting the battery as I don’t want to lose any electrical settings? m.d Yes, but if it is a trickle charger then it may at some time cause damage to the battery if not monitored. We would suggest that a smart charger may be a better alternative.
WILL A 16-INCH RIM SPACE SAVER WHEEL BE ACCEPTABLE ON MY CAR WITH 17-INCH WHEELS? Will a 16-inch rim space saver be acceptable on my Mazda MX5 with 17-inch wheels? T.S
H,J says ...Yes, you can have a smaller size space saver in your car. It’s a spare for emergencies only - essentially to either get you home or get you to a tyre depot. The slight disparity on rolling circumference is not a problem when used for emergencies only.

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR TREATMENT OF DAVID CLIFFORD LEADS A SOUR TASTE: Kerry’s defeat in the League away to Tyrone was a blow to their hopes of reaching a final but it’s a very tight Division so there will be lots of twists and turns before their campaign ends. And of course what was even more disappointing for Kerry fans at the game last Sunday was the treatment of David Clifford. The day started with the switching of the game to Edendork and those at Pairc Arthur Mallon must be given credit for supplying the pitch it was not in great shape due to the amount of rain that fell plus for spectators there was no stand. But it was the on the field towards the end of the game that the real drama happened. The treatment of David Clifford by the Tyrone sub and then the Kerry star getting a second yellow card has left a sour taste. Kerry last week would have trained twice, travelled up on Saturday, stayed over night, played the game and were denied at least a point by the poor decision of the officials and then face a 6 hour journey home. That’s a huge commitment to make and then have the chance of getting at least a draw snatched away due to something that they could not foresee. Now I don’t believe the umpire or the referee did it deliberately and I am sure the umpire didn’t realise Clifford was on a yellow. But the present day referee has a huge work load with the new rules. Maybe with all the money the GAA has declared in their financial report an extra official for Inter County games could be employed. He could be in radio contact with the ref re who has been booked and also on the length of time players are in the sin-bin for plus the other big talking point of time keeping. The ref in the Meath game played no overtime while in Croke Park that official played 9 minutes…. KERINS O’RAHILLY’S NEWS: The club was delighted with the turn-out at the Academy despite the bad weather. The coaches put all the young players through their paces as well as making sure the sessions are fun. The club was delighted to see so many kids back from last year and also welcome a number of new players. It was also great to see the new Academy coaches Edel O’Sullivan, Keith Brosnan, Barry Friday 14th February 2020
John Keane, Ray Walsh, Barry O’Shea and Ger O’Shea in action. They remind all the players to take a few minutes each day at home to practice their skills. The Juvenile Academy training continues in the Kerry Sport’s Academy this Sunday, February 16th from 12 noon and new members are always welcome. The u14 Boys District trained this week under GDA for Tralee Tom Joy and take part in the Gaeltacht Blitz this Sunday starting at 10am. Normal training continues each Friday in John Mitchels from 7 to 8pm. The u12 Boys train each Wednesday while the u16’s will be back after their exams. All players must be registered as if this is not done you are not ensured. Registration takes place this Saturday February 15th in Charlies Bar and Bistro from 12 to 2.30pm and the cost is e40 per child or e60 for a family of 2 or more children. This covers all boys from u6 to u16’s and all girls from u6’s to u10’s. Academy gear will be available for sale during registration . In the Ladies Section a number of new coaches were also welcomed for the new season. The u12 Girls started back in Cumann Iosaef last Sunday and there was a great turn-out despite the storm. Any girls who missed out on the Awards night will be presented with their medals this Sunday. The u14 Girls training commences in Cumann Ioseaf this Sunday while the u16 Girls are doing their Circuit Training in the Sports Academy each Tuesday with the Minors also training on Tuesdays. The club has been chosen for the Gaelic4Teens – a coach education based initiative and coaches will being the training next week. The girls and their coaches will have a day out in Abbotstown on April 26th at the National Gaelic4teens Festival. There will also be unique G4T gear available to purchase. More details to follow. PARNELLS NEWS: The Parnells U10 squad took part in a great blitz organised by Kerry Hurling & Games Development last Friday evening, 7th February in the new Kerry Sports Academy (KSA), and certainly enjoyed themselves with matches against Firies, Kilmoyley, Lixnaw and Ballyduff. It was a great start to the new season and hopefully gave them a taste of what is to come when training resumes in the KSA. Parnells U6 boys & girls, U8 and U10 boys return to action in the Kerry Sports Academy (KSA) on
U12 & u14 Camogie groups return to training on Monday 10th February on CBS The Green Astro from 8-9pm and every Monday thereafter for 8 weeks. Cost for 8 weeks is €25 per person. WIN PUT WARRIORS IN POLE POSITION: Garvey’s Tralee Warriors win over PyrobelKillester puts the Tralee side in a great position to retain their SuperLeague trophy but there is a lot of basketball to play before that might happen. After another dramatic weekend of action around the country the Warriors now sit three points clear of Belfast Star who overcame Keane’s SuperValu Killorglin up north and six points clear of UCD Marian who were turned over away to DCU Saints. PRO Alan Cantwell say that everything is still very much to play for as the teams shape up for the last five games of the season. “This weekend the Warriors will head West to take on Moycullen on Saturday night at the Kingfisher Arena in NUI Galway. A win there would set them up perfectly for three home games in a row. This run will start with the next mouthwatering version of the Kerry derby when Keanes Supervalu come to town. The Killorglin side are in a battle for a top six finish so will be really up to take the Warriors scalp. “Maree and Abbey Seals Dublin Lions then visit Tralee before a trip to Cork to take on Coughlan C&S Neptune in mid-March. And wouldn’t that be a special place to take the League title!” In their latest win last weekend the Warriors were always in control. Scores from Ivan Bogdanovic, Daniel Jokubaitis, Kieran Donaghy, Andre Berry and Rap Buivydas saw
them lead 24-18 at the end of the first quarter. A run in the second quarter did see the visitors momentarily take the lead 37-36 but the Warriors fought back to go up by 6 at the half 43-37. The Warriors put in a big third quarter led by Jon Lawton and when Darragh O’Hanlon came off the bench to hit three three’s the Tralee boys were 68-51 up as the game entered the final quarter. There was no way back and their 13th win from their 17 games was secured. Ivan Bogdanovic top scored on 14 followed by Daniel Jokubaitis on 13 with Darragh O’Hanlon, Eoin Quigley and Andre Berry all ending with 9 points. LEAGUE OF IRELAND SEASON SET TO KICK OFF: The SSE Airtricity League will get underway this weekend. There was a false start last weekend when the President Cup between Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers fell to weather. Gary O’Neill and his Rovers teammates will hoping to take Dundalk’s League crown this year to follow on from their FAI Senior Cup triumph last November. The big game of the weekend is Saturday afternoon’s televised Dublin derby with Rovers taking on Bohs. We will know in a few weeks how many Kerry players are involved in the Men’s and Women’s National Leagues. And of course the underage League of Ireland’s will begin next month and Kerry will again be represented at u13, u15, u17 and u19 level. Their groups have not yet been announced due to the issues in Limerick. With Limerick FC now looking likely to get their licence back especially after the withdrawal of the new entity Treat United. It does look like the Limerick Ladies will be in the Women’s National League and we will see if any Kerry girls are on the squads.
