Norma pays tribute to journalist Michael O’Regan RIP

“ It is with great sadness I learned of the passing of Michael O’Regan. RIP. Michael was the consummate journalist; well researched, well informed, fair, impartial, passionate and compassionate in equal measure. He was a proud Kerry man and carried his county with pride both in his heart and his voice. A superb and expert commentator on all things political, he was also a much valued contributor to radio and television programmes.For those of us from Kerry Michael was inextricably linked with Radio Kerry;

an assured and reassuring voice on Call from the Dáil. His razor sharp wit and humour made his exchanges with Jerry O’Sullivan compelling, informative and enlightening. Kerry politicians and the local community waited with bated breath every Friday to hear his pronouncements for they were delivered with absolute authority and conviction and accepted without question by the public at large.In his personal engagements Michael was a thorough gentleman; thoughtful, generous and unfailingly polite. Gingered beef stir-fry with rice

Busy weeknights need quick, family-friendly dinners – our fantastic time-saving stir-fry will really hit the spot

Ingredients

• 220g dried basmati rice

• Low-calorie cooking spray

• 400g lean beef frying steaks, visible fat removed, thinly sliced

• 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped

• 1 tsp finely grated fresh root ginger

• 2 onions, thinly sliced

• 650g ready-prepared stir-fry vegetables

• 1 tbsp medium curry powder

• 4 tbsp dark soy sauce/tamari

• 3 level tbsp sweet chilli sauce

• 1 red chilli, deseeded and thinly sliced, to serve

• Lime wedges, to serve

Method

• Cook the rice according to the pack instructions.

• At the same time, put a non-stick wok or large frying pan sprayed with low-calorie cooking spray over a high heat. When it's hot, stir-fry the beef for 3-4 minutes, or until just cooked through. Transfer to a plate and keep warm.

• Rinse the wok, wipe dry with kitchen paper and respray it with low-calorie cooking spray. Fry the garlic, ginger, onions and stir-fry vegetables for 6-8 minutes, or until just beginning to so en. Add the curry powder and cook for 1 minute. Add the soy sauce and sweet chilli sauce and stir-fry for a further minute.

• Drain the rice. Toss the beef through the vegetable mixture, then divide between 4 shallow bowls. Serve, garnished with the chilli, with the rice and the lime wedges for squeezing over.

“Castlegregory National school was selected to be part of a new innovative, the Arts-in-Education BLAST Residency Programme recently. The aim of this scheme was to give pupils in schools all over the country the opportunity to work with a professional artist on unique projects. Castlegregory NS made a bottle cap mural, “A fisherman at sea”. The school would like to thank both Lee Strand for donating some of the bottle caps and the school community for recycling their used bottle caps.

The highly anticipated Les Mills Launch event was held in the city of London on Saturday, February 17th. This exciting fitness event, known for its electrifying atmosphere and world-class instructors, was attended by Catriona Cantillon and Samuel Coughlan representing Manor West Leisure Club & Zero Gravity Fitness Studio. The event was a must for fitness enthusiasts and professionals alike, offering a unique opportunity to experience Les Mills’ renowned workout programs firsthand. The excitement in participation was elevated by the European launch of 3 new workout programs. LES MILLS FUNCTIONAL STRENGHT, LES MILLS SHAPES, and LES MILLS STRENGHT DEVELOPMENT.

Kerry FC kicked off their 2024 League of Ireland season against Cork City, marking their first-ever encounter. Despite missing key players like Jack Kavanagh and Valerii Dolia, the team showed determination. Coach James Sugrue urged them to be giant killers, while captain Andy Spain emphasized their competitive spirit.

Although Kerry FC managed a second-half clean sheet, Cork City secured a 2-0 victory. Despite the defeat, the team remains optimistic, focusing on the positives and looking ahead to their next match against Bray Wanderers at Mounthawk Park. KERINS O RAHILLYS CLUB NOTES

Tralee’s town board league match against Ardfert was postponed due to a bereavement in the Ardfert club. Next weekend, they’ll play St. Pats at home in the 3rd round.In the club championships, Tralee has been grouped with Listowel Emmets, Kilcummin, and Laune Rangers. The first game will be against Laune Rangers, coinciding with their first round in the county league.

Kerins O’Rahillys 2024 Juvenile Academy had a successful start with over 120 children attending. New members are welcome to join the club. Members are urged to download Clubzap for communication purposes. The festival is sponsored by Nature Valley and supported by various organizations. Tralee’s minors kicked off their county league campaign with a tough match against Firies, ending in a 2-10 to 0-8 loss. In the ladies’ section, Kerins O’ Rahilly’s promotes Gaelic football in a safe and supportive environment. They encourage new members to join.

Updates on U12, U14, U16, and minor teams’ activities and preparations for upcoming leagues and competitions are provided. Registration for 2024 is now open, and all players and coaches are reminded to register with the LGFA through the Foireann system.

Mercy Mounthawk faces Naas CBS in the Hogan Cup Semi-Final on Saturday, February 24th, in Bansha Co Tipperary at 2 pm. Good luck to the team, management, and Parnells hurlers Oran Murphy, Odhran Kerins, Conor Dennehy, David Sargent, and Donnacha Buttimer.

GAA CLUB NOTES

Lee Strand Tralee/St Brendan’s

League 2024:

In Round 2 on February 18th in Ardfert, Churchill defeated Ballymacelligott 3-09 to 0-15. Despite the loss, Ballymacelligott showed a solid performance, with Jamie Burke making a notable senior debut. The halftime score was Churchill 2-03, Ballymac 0-08. In the second half, Ballymac fought hard but Churchill secured the win. The next game is on February 25th against Na Gaeil.

Ballymac Minors:

Ballymacelligott GAA defeated Keel/ Listry 3-16 to 0-06 in the Minor Division 1 A First Round. Notable performances came from Eoghan Joy, Jack Joy, Gearoid Healy, Ciarán O’Connell, and Eoin Moriarty.

Congratulations to Niall Moriarty for being a flag bearer at the Kerry-Mayo game.

Kerry LGFA Minors and Under 16:

Well done to Kate, Anna, Jamielee, and Katie who represented Kerry in the minors and under 16 teams. While the minors lost to Cork, the under 16s were victorious against Tipperary.
