LEGAL CORNER
The More you tell the more you sell!!!
Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read
LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES
Sorcha is a very creative individual and is always thinking of new ideas and new innovative ways of solving common problems with new inventions e.g. a new mechanism on a stapler to stop it sticking, a heater to keep plants from dying in the frost and a new way of making yogurt. She is wondering if any of her creative endeavours can be protected and how. Patents are the means whereby new inventions, technological advances and new improved products and processes are protected. Once one succeeds in obtaining a patent on the new process/product it allows the patent holder to solely mine the benefit of the patented invention by excluding others from exploiting the item commercially unless with the consent of the owner/patent holder. Hopefully the owner of the patent can then exploit it herself by making, using, selling or importing the patented invention. A patent is a form of property or intellectual property right and it can be transferred , licensed or otherwise used by the owner. Any transfer/license must be in writing. If a patent is granted in Ireland it will be applicable only in this territory. However if one wants protection in other countries one can do the European Patent or an International patent. For an invention to qualify for patenting it must be 1. New . 2. Something that can be made and used in industry including agriculture. 3. Have an inventive step – An invention is considered as involving an inventive step if it is not obvious to a person skilled in that area of technology, having regard to the state of the art. Patents can be difficult to obtain and expensive. Businesses sometimes employ patents agents to do the application. It is important that one does not go public with an invention before applying for it as this may prevent or limit the chances of getting the patent. Patents can last for 10 or 20 years depending on which type one applies for. “Patent pending” is a term used to inform the public that an application has been made for an item. It is illegal to falsely label a product as patent pending. An example of a patent was Baileys when they started off first and the patent was directed to the process of being able to make cream liqueur without curdling. Lawquip: The invention of the wheel is really what got society rolling. Mairéad hands over the books at Kerry Hospice! Mairéad Fernane has handed the treasurer’s ledgers to her successor. Mairéad has embodied volunteerism for Kerry Hospice. Over her decades of involvement, she has helped with fundraising in all its aspects. Whether it was Sunflower Day, Coffee Morning or any other venture, Mairéad’s presence could be counted upon. So, it was no surprise when the late Ted Moynihan, our founding chairman, asked her to assume the reigns of treasurer in 2016. The AGM that elected Mairéad, did so almost by acclaim. She was a known and trusted individual, one that would safely look after the interests
of the Foundation. For the last almost five years, Mairéad has steadfastly represented the best interests of the charity. Like all organisations, the pandemic has been particularly difficult. It interrupted the smooth transfer of roles. It was with a sense of deep appreciation that Mairéad agreed to stay on to preserve continuity. Her work has been exemplary. Every year the accountants expressed their gratitude for the clarity of her work. So, finally, the time has come for Mairéad to pass the ledgers on to our new treasurer. While it is a time tinged with sadness, the loss of a familiar face in a demanding
role, it is also a time for gratitude. From all your friends and fellow volunteers.
Thank you Mairéad

HELLo everyone! & welcome back to this brand new weekly column, 'Create with Rebecca', a page where I will be talking ALL things social media! (yaaaaaaay!). This column will be especially helpful for those in business looking to navigate the world pf social media for their business. I will be simplifying EVERYTHING as well as giving my top tips. Oh, by the way... I can edit videos, advise you on social media & create a new vibe for your brand! (Aka video editor, social media consultant & graphic designer) - so I know what I'm talking about!
I GAINED OVER 5,000 FOLLOWERS ON TIKTOK IN A WEEK We're talking about TikTok again, because A LOT of you aren't harnessing TikTok's power yet and I want to help change that. TikTok is for EVERYONE and EVERY brand and business. -
TikTok is not just for teenagers, it's not just for dancing, and it is definitely not just a fad. On TikTok I have seen businesses go from 0 sales to sold out with one video, people change their lives, reach new audiences and demographics. Why? Because of the very very powerful algorithm. I recently had a brainwave that a TikTok video has to caption the audience's (very short) attention span within the first SECOND otherwise they have scrolled past. I utilised this realisation by saying something that peaks the viewers interest straight away and using text on the screen. I immediately saw a change in both my followers and views with this simple tactic. The video I posted right after that reached over 800,000 people. 800,000! Reaching that many people on other social media platforms like Instagram is unheard of in 2021, unless you spend big money on a paid promotion, and for those kind of numbers... I mean BIG. Of course, like I tell everyone, all of your videos probably won't go viral, but it only takes one to start that momentum. So... You want to start posting on TikTok now? What should my first move be, you ask? CONSUME. Download the app and consume the content on there to get a full understanding of the app, consume it every day for 20 minutes for a week, find similar brands / businesses to yours that are doing well, not to copy their content, but to get a sense of what route to go down when posting. If you want to discuss with me further on how you can successfully implement TikTok into your social media marketing strategy, email me at createtralee@gmail.com to book a call!
I hope you are as excited as I am for this new weekly Social Media column! I am excited to help you all become social media savvy and to learn tips and tricks along the way. For more information on what I do or if you are interested in any of my social media service: I offer 1:1 consultation calls, video editing, graphic design and more, you can follow @create.socialmedia on instagram or email me: createtralee@gmail.com to book a call!

Burst Water Mains hit Greater Tralee area hard this week! Irish Water and Kerry County Council worked intensively to restore water supplies to Killarney, Tralee, Castleisland, Firies, Farranfore, Castlemaine, Ballymacelligot, Fenit and surrounding areas last Tuesday and Wednesday. This burst on the water main occurred Tuesday evening from Lough Guitane Water Treatment Plant to Sheheree Reservoir on the Central Regional Water Supply Scheme in Kerry. The burst occurred on a section of water mains at Faugh, Muckross, Killarney, Co. Kerry and was repaired in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The burst was reported at 5pm and repaired at 2am, but was followed by a further mains break to the scheme on Wednesday morning. Reservoir levels recovered well and water supply started to return to customers throughout Wednesday night and Thursday on an intermittent basis initially .
The burst impacted water supply to homes and businesses in Killarney, Tralee, Castleisland, Firies, Farranfore, Castlemaine, Ballymacelligot, Fenit and surrounding areas. Alternative water supplies (mobile water tankers and Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs)) were made available at many central locations and remained in place until normal water supply was restored:. Tralee area was serviced by the following locations and saw queues for water from early morning ,Mounthawk, O’Donnell’s Bar, Brandon Car Park, Manor Shopping Centre, St. Brendans Church, Tralee Sports Complex, Munster Bar, Ballymullen, Cloghers pump station (near LIDL), Na Gaeil GAA, Caheranne Strand Road, Rathass Church Carpark The Spa GAA The Tankard. Bottled water was also provided at some of the above locations Dedicated water service crews were mobilised last

Tuesday night and the pipe was repaired in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Credit must go to Kerry County Council staff in particular who worked through the night . Crews were working to gradually reintroduce water to the network.Irish Water continued to prioritise water supply to hospitals, nursing homes and vaccination centres in the area. Speaking about the repair works, Anna Brosnan, Irish Water said: “Crews worked hard through the night to complete the repairs and now continue to carefully manage the return of water supply into the vast network impacted by this burst main. We understand the disruption unplanned outages can cause to customers and we appreciate your patience as we work to return the water supply to homes and businesses as quickly as possible.”

Aqua Dome Car Park to House Two Glorious Nights of Outdoor Cinema! By Georgina Downes Question: What’s better than a classic movie? Answer: A classic movie screened at a drive-in, that’s what. Just in case you didn’t know where this was going, The Aqua Dome Car Park! Reel Events Kerry will be hosting a Pop-Up Drive-In Cinema Experience showing four of the best family movies of all time, and we can’t wait. Plus, Reel Events Kerry is offering early bird discounts so log on to their Facebook
page and bag some greatdeal tickets in advance. In the meantime… If you haven’t seen The Goonies, now’s your chance to catch this snappy, feel-good delight. Released in 1985, this Spielberg-produced film features a group of young misfits who stumble upon an ancient map and subsequently set out to find the long-lost treasure of legendary pirate, old One-Eyed Willy. There’s adventure, booby traps and first kisses along the way. The Goonies is screening on Saturday 7th at 5.00pm. Ready for a bit of Summer Lovin? It’s more than 40 years since Grease hit our screens but who cares, it’s still an extravaganza of insanely catchy songs, hair oil, which, incidentally, is what the title of the film refers to, and sprayedon PVC pants (Olivia Newton John, we salute you). Grease is screening on Saturday 7th August at 8.00pm.
What do you do when you accidentally go back in time and you mother starts crushing on you so you have to somehow make her fall in love with your dad because if she doesn’t, you won’t actually exist anymore and the future course of the world will never be the same again? Existential crisis, sure, but fixable as it turns out. See how Marty, played magnificently by Michael J Fox, does it in Robert Zemeckis’ classic and brilliant time-travelling comedy. Back To The Future is screening on Sunday 8th August, at 5.00pm.
“We highly recommend dressing up in 1950’s style attire to add to the magic, and if you tag #popupcinematralee in your snaps, you stand a chance to win some cool prizes” says Clodagh Quinlan from Reel Events Kerry. After the year we’ve all had, no excuse to dress up necessary!

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE! FOUR EXPECTANT FATHERS.
Four expectant fathers were in a Minneapolis hospital waiting room, while their wives were in labour. The nurse tells the first man, “Congratulations! You’re the father of twins!” “What a coincidence! I work for the Minnesota Twins baseball team!” The nurse returns and tells the second man, “You are the father of triplets!” “Wow, what a coincidence! I work for 3M Corporation!” When the nurse tells the third man that his wife has given birth to quadruplets. “Another coincidence! I work for Four Seasons Hotel!” At this point, the fourth guy faints. When he comes to, the others ask what’s wrong. “What’s wrong?! I work for Seven-Up!”
A JET IS FLYING ACROSS THE COUNTRY WHEN THE PASSENGERS BEGAN TO FEEL SHAKING.
The pilot announced, “Uh Folks, we just experienced some turbulence, which caused some engine troubles on our left wing. Luckily, this jet is equipped with 4 engines, and we still have 3 functional engines! Because of the engine issues we will be arriving at our destination 30 minutes later than scheduled.” The passengers all groaned and went back to sleeping, reading, and watching their movies. Not long afterwards, they felt more turbulence, and again heard the pilot say, “OK so we just lost our second engine, but not to worry, we are still running well on two engines. We will arrive at our destination 1 hour later than scheduled.” The passengers exchanged worried looks and started talking among themselves. Again, they felt the jet dip and rumble, and again, they heard the pilot say, “We lost our third engine, and we will arrive 2 hours later than scheduled at our destination. My apologies for the inconveniences this delay is causing all of you.” This time, a frustrated looking passenger wearing a business suit stood up and yelled, “At this rate, if we lose another engine, we’ll never get there!”
DUMB FISHERMAN.
Two buddies are fishing, but they haven’t caught anything all day. Then, another fisherman walks by with a huge load of fish. They ask him “excuse me, but where did you get all those fish?” The other fisherman replies, “If you just go down the stream until the water isn’t salty, there are a ton of hungry fish.” They thank him and go on their way. 15 minutes later, one fisherman says to the other “fill the bucket up with water and see if the water is salty.” He dips the bucket in the stream and drinks some. “Nope. Still salty.” 30 minutes later, he asks him to check again. “Nope, still salty.” One our later they check again. “Nope. Still salty.” “This isn’t good,” the fisherman finally says. “We have been walking for almost two hours and the water is still salty!” “I know,” says the other. “And the bucket is almost empty!”

T RQ U I N G CINA R SAND ! KEEP TRALEE IN BUSINESS! 26 O PREMIUM ADVERTISING KEEP YOUR BUSINESS TRALEE ELECTROGENIC REVEALS ELECTRIC CITROEN DS CONVERSION WITH 200-MILE RANGE
Oxford-based electric car conversion specialist Electrogenic has revealed another electrified classic in the form of this: a battery powered version of the Citroen DS. Based on a 1971 example of the iconic Bertoni designed Citroen saloon, the company has created what it claims to be the world’s first professionally converted DS running on electric power only. The car’s original 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine has been replaced by a 120bhp electric motor developing 235kW torque. Like other classics converted by the company, it still sends its power to the wheels (the front wheels in the case of the DS) through the car’s original manual gearbox. A battery 48.5kWh in capacity has been packaged in, which the brand says offers a real-world range of around 140 miles on a single charge. The company says the car is also available with an optional range-extender battery providing up to 200 miles, but has not revealed the capacity of this battery. Standard charging tech is rated at 29kW, which can recharge the 48.5kWh standard battery in around two hours. The car retains the hydro-pneumatic suspension of the original, though with some modern tweaks to make the system more compatible with the electric drivetrain. As such, the mechanical pump for controlling the suspension’s hydraulic system has been replaced with a modern electric one, to reduce noise. “As with all first-time conversions, the DS presented us with unique challenges. In this case adapting the hydro-pneumatic suspension to run without the combustion engine. The old pump was so noisy that it detracted from the silent drive of the car, but our new electric pump solved the issue completely,” explains Ian Newstead, Electrogenic director and co-founder. The design of the DS is largely unchanged. Opening the bonnet now reveals the tightly packaged battery and motor system, while outside the exhaust system is now absent, and a new ‘DS EV electronique’ badge has been added. This first example of an Electrogenic DS has been converted to customer specification, so there is no set price for the conversion. The brand has produced bespoke conversions for a trio of British sports cars: the Triumph Stag, Morgan 4/4 and the Jaguar E-Type.
MERCEDES CONFIRMS EQG ELECTRIC G-CLASS FOR 2024
Mercedes has confirmed plans to launch a new all-electric version of the G-Class in 2024 alongside a luxury Maybach version of the EQS SUV. Mercedes has said it aims to have an electric vehicle in every vehicle segment it serves by 2025 – a goal which will be achieved by electrifying offerings in the off-road and luxury segments.Mercedes’s marketing and sales chief, Britta Seeger, said: “Next year we will present SUV versions of our EQE as well as of our EQS. “And I can promise you that we will maintain this momentum going forward. What applies to the Mercedes portfolio also applies to our incredibly strong sub brands – we want to go electric. So, you can look forward to a top-notch EQS SUV version of Mercedes-Maybach, for example. In 2024 we will launch our full-electric G-Class, as well. It will continue the great story of our G-series.” All of these vehicles will be based on Mercedes’s larger car Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA), which made its debut under the EQS saloon this year. The architecture is capable of accomodating a 100kWh battery which can deliver a range of up to 435 miles on a single charge in the EQS.Mercedes hasn’t yet released any technical information on either the Maybach EQS SUV or the electric G-Glass, but we expect the former will be based on the same EVA platform as the EQS saloon – albeit only with that car’s most potent powertrains. Details are even more sparse on the electric G-Wagen. However, if Mercedes elects to keep the car as a mud-plugging off-roader rather than a lifestyle SUV, it’s possible that the firm’s engineers could look to electrify the current combustion-engined model’s ladder chassis with the battery tech and electric motors from the EVA platform. Mercedes’s Chief Operating Officer and head of development, Markus Schafer, said: “In 2025 we will further consolidate our architectures to one final overarching system: MB.EA, the Mercedes-Benz Electric Architecture. No combustion engines any longer. “And it will revolutionize the way we engineer electric cars. In fact, it will not even be an architecture as we have known it so far. It’s a scalable modular system offering the different components as we need them for different vehicles – plug and play, off the shelf.“Our batteries will be highly standardized. More than 90% of all future Mercedes vehicles will be based on a common battery platform. At the same time, we will be flexible enough to offer individual solutions to all our customers.” Friday 30th July 2021

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER 28
with “The Voice” Pat Harnett
FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR OLYMPIC ROLLERCOASTER AS USUAL: So have you been having late nights watching sports that you only follow once every 4 (or 5) years? And this year are ye all experts on skateboarding and surfing as they make their Olympic debuts!! As always there are stories everywhere from athletes who have come back from what could have been career ending injuries, a new one this year – players coming back after Covid like GB’s Tom Dean who was twice positive but came back to win the 200m swimming freestyle, record breaking performances, hard luck stories etc. And what effect will the withdrawal of the USA’s ‘Golden Girl’ Simone Biles for mental health reasons have going forward? But even in the heat of battle there are examples everywhere of respect between athletes – none more so than at the end of the Women’s Triathlon where the late finishers were met by hugs and words of encouragement from those who finished earlier. From an Irish point of view it has been a mixed Olympics to date but there are lots of events left. From a Kerry point of view Monika Dukarsa and Aileen Crowley will finish their Olympics in the B final (7th to 12th) and David Kenny’s event is still to come. And rowing had given us our first medal but not from the source expected (there should be more to come from the men’s doubles etc) with the Irish women’s four taking bronze, the first ever for women’s rowing. Harry McNulty, whose two grandmothers are from Kerry, and his 7’s teammates finished 10th and will have some What If’s. Kurt Walker two wins in the boxing ring has given us a new star but can he keep focused a win once more to be guaranteed a medal? Aidan Walsh is just one fight away from a medal with some of the big names having byes into their second rounds. But there has been losses too with Emmet Brennan’s humility after been beaten will live long in the memory. So it is only halfway in Tokyo and the athletics which is the highlight for many hasn’t started yet which means some more late nights!! Let us know your favourite moment – traleeadvertiser@ gmail.com DOUBLE KERRY SUCCESS BUT LADIES LOSE OUT: The only thing that can be said about Kerry’s annihilation of Cork in Killarney is that it could help to bring forward the demise of the Provincial Championships. The gap all over the country, bar Ulster, is predictable with possible only 5 or 6 counties now with a realistic chance of reaching an All Ireland. Nothing Kerry can do only keep driving on and get everything right ahead of a difficult semi-final against the winner of next week’s Ulster decider between Monaghan and Tyrone. There will be even more interest in Dublin against Meath to see where the Blues actually are and how the losses Friday 30th July 2021
of a number of players will affect them. Mayo awaits the winners in the other semi-final. The Championship needs two very good semi-finals and for Kerry to beat Dublin in the final! Camogie side down the Premier County: Having had a decent League where the win over Galway was the highlight the Kerry camogie got their Intermediate Championship off to the perfect start with a defeat of Tipperary in Lixnaw. Kerry now face Derry at the same venue after they defeated the other side in the group Laois in their opening game. Another win this weekend will see the Kerry girls reach an All Ireland quarter final or semi-final if they get a bye in the draw. Jackie Hurley got the all- important Kerry goal in 43rd minute plucking a high ball from Patrice Diggin out of the sky and crashing it past the keeper. While Kerry were impressive going forward it was their defence, led by Niamh Leen and Rachel McCarthy, that was the basis of victory. This side certainly deserves to be in the Intermediate section and one win from the next two games will see them into the latter stages of the Championship. The Kerry Ladies season fizzled out with a defeated to Donegal in a season that probably didn’t live up to their hopes. STACKS STORIES: The u7’s, 8’s and 9’S continue to train on Sunday mornings at 11am in Caherslee and on Thursday afternoons at 5.30 in Connolly Park. Newcomers always welcome. It’s Sundays and Tuesdays for the 10/11’s. For the 12’s and 13’s Phase 2 of the Lee strand County League is underway with the A’s first outing this Sunday August 1st. Training continues on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The B’s will also be in action on Sunday. The 15’s took the County League Division 1A title following a 3-10 to 2-09 win over Laune Rangers. The club is delighted for squad and coaches who put in a great effort to achieve this success. There was a Minutes Silence before the game in memory of two Kerry players and players with these clubs – Noel Lucey of Laune Rangers and Jo Jo Barrett late of Austin Stacks. The B’s are also celebrating following their 4-16 to 3-02also over Laune Rangers to take the Division 9 title. The Austin Stacks Football Camp will take place from August 3rd to 7th inclusive from 9.30am to 1pm each day costing e50 per player and e80 for a family. PARNELLS NEWS: The u7 boys and girls enjoyed the visit of Ballyheigue, home town of manager David Lucid, and despite the heat the young players put on a great show. Eanna Sheehan and Dylan Carroll were named the Players of the Week. The u9’s and 11’s combined to take on Rathmore in Caherslee and put in a great performance led by their captain Jay Howard McLarnon. The u13’s travelled away to a strong Crotta side who also handled the
roasting hot weather the better in this Division 1 County League clash and led easily at the break. Credit to the Parnells boys the second half was much closer but Crotta O’Neills were always in control. In the Junior Hurling League Division 3 Round 4 Parnells took on Abbeydorney and the Tralee town side led 2-04 to 1-04 at the break. Both sides really went for it in the second half leading to a nail biting finish when a penalty put the host ahead before Parnells hit back with a goal of their own. Sadly for Parnells Abbeydorney scored another goal late on to take the win 3-12 to 3-09. The side are away to Crotta in their final Junior League game. The club was delighted to welcome over 80 attendees at the Summer Camp in Caherslee sponsored by Kerry Motor Works. The weather was glorious, if a little hot, and the club thanks the 10 coaches they had on the camp led by Ruairi O’Sullivan. On Saturday evening the club held a barbecue for volunteers and their families in recognition of their effort. It was a very enjoyable evening with great weather to add to the occasion. Thank you to David Lucid (our U7s manager) who provided the excellent catering. The club had a number of girls on County duty including on the Minor panel who drew with Down in Round 1, on the u14’s who had a great win over Kildare and they also had a number on the boys on the Kerry u14’s and 15’s. Well done to who pulled on the Green and Gold. KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: There was a great turn-out in Ballyrickard for the Academy ages. Oscar Loughnane was named as the u5 Player of the Week with Vanessa O’Connor winning the award from the u6 Girls. At u7 boys Axel Rodenbikers and Jack Lawlor shared the award while the u8 Girls Player of the Week went to Kitty Bowler. The young payers are looking forward to their trip to John Mitchels. The u9 boys enjoyed their Go Games against Laune Rangers while in the u10 girls Yvie Ross was the Player of the Week. There was hard luck for the u15 boys in the County League losing out by 4 points. The u12 and u14 Girls were in action in mid-week while the u16’s and minors are awaiting their fixtures. The seniors went down to Firies in Round 4 of the Donal Curtin Cup. The clubs Summer Camp runs from this Tuesday August 3rd to Friday August 6th inclusive. Lotto- there was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 4,5, 12 and 18 with the next jackpot being e9,300. SOCCER SHORTS: There is another trophy in the cabinet at Christy Leahy Park as their 15’s girls are the KSBGL Summer Girls Shield winners. They were 2-0 winners over a tough Dingle Bay Rovers thanks goals from Priya O’Donovan and Faye O’Neill in the final kindly hosted by Camp Juniors. It was almost a perfect weekend for the Parks girls section but their 12’s drew 1-1 against Listowel Celtic (Alanah Crossan on the mark for the Park) saw them missing out on the final on goal difference. In the EA Sports underage League of Ireland the Kerry 14’s and 17’s lost out away to Cork in the height of Saturday’s heat. Both sides were well in the game until the final 10 minutes. The 19’s lost out at home to Waterford. All sides have the Bank Holiday weekend off. PITCH & PUTT - ELLA’S NATIONAL TITLE THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEKEND: Huge congratulations to Ella Moynihan from the Tralee CC who is the new National Girls Matchplay champion. She becomes the third Tralee player to hold the title following Aidan Walsh in 1987 and Ronan Walshe in 1992. Ella’s historic win is the first by a Kerry girl on the national stage and she was also the first female winner of the Munster section. There was also some near misses in the boys, when Mark O’Regan, also from Tralee, lost out for the 2nd year in a row at the semi-final stage of the Plate competition. There was a huge crowd for the Tralee Scratch Cup with 117 players teeing it up with the honours went across the border when Cork’s John Walsh defeated Deerpark’s Damien Fleming. The home club were celebrating in the Intermediate competition when Keith O’Brien took the honours. The Ladies event went to Margaret O’Donovan from Bruff. Action now turns to the National Adult Matchplay taking place on the Ryston Newbridge course this weekend. 64 players will tee it up with Killarney’s two time winner Damien Fleming seeded third. First out on the course is Tralee’s Michael Conway who takes on the defending champion Kieran Earls of Limerick in an interesting opening match. In the bottom half of the draw the two Tralee players Jason Creegan and Jason O’Regan will face Galway and Kildare opponents. The County Board wishes all 6 all the best.
