KEEP YOUR BUSINESS IN TRALEE AND KEEP TRALEE IN BUSINESS!

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES Cynthia is wondering about the labelling on the food she buys. How does she read labels and what do the various terms mean. Food labelling is there to educate you about the constituents and attributes of the food you buy. It helps you make informed choices about the food you purchase and enables you to buy and use food safely. Food labelling should be clear, accurate, not misleading. It should be in English but can be in English and Irish. Minimum font size of 1.2mm but this can go to 0.9mm in relation to a smaller product. It should include nutritional value, weight, ingredients, country of origin, use by date, and allergen warnings. In 2014 the latest rules came into play from the EU and these rules govern food labelling now. Manufacturers may put on additional information if they so wish e.g. cooking suggestions. Special labelling can apply to certain products e.g. fish. It should show the commercial and scientific name of the species, whether it was caught at sea or in freshwater and if it was defrosted The use of the word organic on products can only be where the producer has been certified by a recognised body. Prepacked food should have all the following: (a) the name of the food (b) the list of ingredients (c) any allergenic ingredient

(d) the quantity of certain ingredients or categories of ingredients (e) the net quantity of the food (f) the best before or use by date (g) any special storage conditions and/or conditions of use (h) the name or business name and address of the food business operator (i) the country of origin where required (j) instructions for use where necessary (k) with respect to beverages containing more than 1.2 % by volume of alcohol, the actual alcoholic strength by volume (l) a nutrition declaration i.e the energy value and the amounts of fat, saturates, carbohydrate, sugars, protein and salt One should also be aware of best before dates if the item has less than a 3 months shelf life it will be date and month e.g. 5 September if 3-18 months shelf life it will be month and year e.g. August 2020 and if more than 18 months the year e.g. 2021. A shop can sell an item after its best before date but should highlight that it is after its best before date. If there is a use by date on the item the shop should not sell a product after that date as it is deemed unsafe. Lawquip: I don’t know what all these “Nutrition Facts” competitions are on the back of all my food. But Fat is always winning.

Please read this!

Imagine you were born in 1900. When you’re 14, World War I begins and ends when you’re 18 with 22 million dead. Soon after a global pandemic, the Spanish Flu, appears, killing 50 million people. And you’re alive and 20 years old. When you’re 29 you survive the global economic crisis that started with the collapse of the New York Stock Exchange, causing inflation, unemployment and famine. When you’re 33 years old the nazis come to power. When you’re 39, World War II begins and ends when you’re 45 years old with a 60 million dead. In the Holocaust 6 million Jews die. When you’re 52, the Korean War begins. When you’re 64, the Vietnam War begins and ends when you’re 75. A child born in 1985 thinks his grandparents have no idea how difficult life is, but they have survived several wars and catastrophes. Today we have all the comforts in a new world, amid a new pandemic. But we complain because we need to wear masks. We complain because we must stay confined to our homes where we have food, electricity, running water, wifi, even Netflix! None of that existed back in the day. But humanity survived those circumstances and never lost their joy of living. A small change in our perspective can generate miracles. We should be thankful that we are alive. We should do everything we need to do to protect and help each other. This message should reach everyone. Friday 24th July 2020

KEEP YOUR BUSINESS IN TRALEE AND KEEP TRALEE IN BUSINESS!

Returning to Day Time Adult Education Eileen O’Shea - 2020 VTOS Graduate Hand in my heart, I can honestly say VTOS was one of the best things I ever did for me.

January 2018, I retired from a full-on career in the Hospitality Sector working, with my husband, seven days a week, as we were self-employed. In September of that year, I joined VTOS. I settled in pretty quickly making fabulous new friends. VTOS has been a marvellous experience for me, I have learned so much, we did a variety of subjects, just to mention a few - Maths, Communication, Desktop Publishing,

Personal Effectiveness, Health & Fitness, Computer Applications. VTOS has put such a great structure in my new life. I feel it has put the pep back in my step as I look forward to every new day dawning. Reflecting back, I now realise that I had been in a rut the last number of years I worked, as one day ran into the next and I did practically the same job every day - enjoyed it at the time, but now I have learned, there is much more to life outside of work. Anyone thinking about getting back into Adult Education, VTOS is certainly a great place

to start – in my humble opinion, thee place to start. The tutors here are really nice. They are so helpful, they make learning easy and interesting, so it is a pleasure to partake in any of the classes. It is a very friendly and welcoming centre. All the different classes get along really well and support each other but I think that is a fitting testament to the tutors.

To sum up ‘what VTOS really mean to me’ – it just feels like I found my long lost friend! Keep up the great work VTOS!

Dingle Food Festival will not take place in 2020 The Dingle Food festival committee regrets to announce to you that the Dingle Food Festival will not take place in 2020. The committee were initially hopeful the festival would take place to showcase all our peninsula has to offer, however in light of Covid-19, this is not possible. The committee has sought and taken advice from our volunteer committee, our insurance company, An Garda Síochána, Kerry Co.Co. and the HSE. The committee have been in contact with other festivals both here and throughout the country which concluded that social distancing among other guidelines would be impossible

to maintain and this would also restrict the event beyond our control. The committee has considered all the events of the Dingle Food Festival including; The Taste Trail, Kids Events, Street Entertainment, Markets, Cookery Demos, Farmers Forum and Workshops and the committee feel that there is no option but to cancel all events. The safety of all volunteers, customers, local businesses and the community is our primary concern. The committee understands that the annual festival is an important event for everybody here on the Dingle Peninsula.

Our hardworking volunteers have worked tirelessly over the years to make the Dingle Food Festival the success that it is. It is with great sadness that the committee has to cancel an event that many people look forward to; however, we feel this is the correct decision. The Dingle Peninsula, like many areas around the country has been hit hard as a consequence of this pandemic. The peninsula is full of magic, tasty food around every corner, local produce that will never leave you disappointed. If you plan on visiting over the coming weeks & months, please adhere to the government guidelines.

It is with great hope and positivity that the committee of the Dingle Food Festival aim to be back for the first weekend of October 2021. Please e-mail info@dinglefood. com with any query. Thank you for all your understanding & continued support.

DAMIEN MCCARTHY HR Consultant (Assoc. CIPD) T: 086-1936752

COVID-19 FAQ’S: AN EMPLOYER’S GUIDE

Damien answers some of the most relevant concerns currently facing employers and workplaces

1 2 3

Can an employee insist that they work from home or continue to work from home? No, as long as the employer can provide a safe place to work, they are within their rights to insist that the employee returns to the workplace.

4

Can an employee insist on returning to work even though we have asked them to continue working from home? No, but a clear home working policy that includes timeframes relevant to Covid-19 should be in place to provide clarity.

5 6

When will the Wage Subsidy Scheme end? The end of August. However indications are that it will be extended in some form beyond this.

An employee refuses to return to work because of lack of public transport and car share options during Covid-19, must employers allow for this? No, an employer is not responsible for how an employee travels to and from work. An employee has requested that their lay-off be extended as they cannot arrange childminding as of yet? Does the employer have to accommodate this during Covid-19? There is no onus on the employer to accommodate for this during Covid-19 – childcare has been an issue which has put an unfortunate pressure on working parents.

When can an employee who is still on lay-off apply for redundancy? The emergency Covid-19 legislation preventing employees from applying for redundancy expires on the 10th of August.

Business All-Star awarded to Killarney HR & Payroll

A Killarney based business has achieved a quality mark signifying it meets the highest standards of service and trust. Killarney HR and Payroll, a Human Resource Management and Payroll outsourcing service, was awarded the coveted Business All-Star accreditation. This is an independently verified standard mark for indigenous businesses, based on rigorous selection criteria. The accreditation is overseen by the prestigious All-Ireland Business Foundation, whose adjudication panel is chaired by Dr Briga Hynes of the Kemmy Business School at the University of Limerick and Kieran Ring, CEO of the Global Institute of Logistics.

Dr Hynes said the accreditation, which is now held by over 350 firms, is needed by the thousands of small and medium businesses which operate to their own standards, but have nothing to measure them by.“We evaluate a company’s background, trustworthiness and performance, and we speak to customers, employees and vendors,” she said.“We also anonymously approach the company as a customer and report back on the experience. “The business goes through at least two interviews and is scored on every part of the process against set metrics.” Damien McCarthy of Killarney HR & Payroll said that

they “were delighted to be accredited a Business All Star and that it was a mark of the companies continued dedication and support as a HR & Payroll service provider to Businesses in their home county and nationwide”. “We will attend an online ceremony on the 30th of July and look forward to a trip to Croke Park later in the year to receive our presentation.” The All-Ireland Business Foundation is responsible for overseeing the All-Ireland Business Summit and AllStar awards, ongoing All-Star accreditation, Thought Leader awards and promoting peer dialogue among members. The process to select the next group of Business All-Star

accredited companies has begun and further information is available at businessallstars.ie

Beauty

HELLO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE I hope you’re all having a fantastic week My skin BROKE OUT last week. Badly. This week I’m just going to give a few general tips on how to look after your skin better during a breakout and just in general.

I always cleanse my skin twice a day and make sure my skin is completely clean going to bed but I still feel sometimes my skin needs a break.

STILL CLEANSE - Even when you’re not wearing makeup, you still need

to cleanse tone and moisturise your skin every morning and night. There is dirt everywhere and that dirt will build up on your skin if you don’t clean it.

WATER WATER WATER - Staying hydrated is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your skin. You could use the most expensive products in the world but if you’re not drinking enough water your skin will look dull and dehydrated. FACEMASK IT UP - There’s no better feeling than my skin after a facemask. Although I would like to say I do one once a week, I don’t. When choosing a facemask, make sure to choose one that will suit your skin type. If you have dry skin, choose a hydrating mask such as the Glam Glow Thirstymud. If you have acne prone skin, choose a clarifying mask such as the Dermalogica Sebum Clearing Masque. My tried and trusted facemask brands include, Sand And Sky, Trilogy, Dermalogica and Ole Henrikesen. Not saying I spend a fortune on skincare but I definitely spend that bit extra. Obviously some of the cheaper priced brands are decent, but just make sure to do a bit of research before using them. Your skin will thank you. GET A FACIAL - If you’ve never had a facial and are looking to treat

yourself, I would highly recommend it. Also if you have no idea about products or what skin type you have it’s great to get a facial as the person doing it will tell you everything you need to know about your skin.

EXPENSIVE DOESN’T ALWAYS = BETTER - Just because

skincare products have a bigger price tag doesn’t mean that they are better for your skin. Make sure to check the ingredients, they never lie. One of my favourite affordable brands at the moment is CeraVe.

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

Hello my strong friends

I hope you’re all having a great week. This week I just wanted to talk about the time of year we’re at currently. This time of year is a tricky one with regards to fitness and health, everyone and their mother’s are talking about the lastest diet, no carbs, and whatever other fads are going around! They also think that whatever they’re doing is the best thing yet and EVERYONE needs to do it. You hear phrases like, “come monday now I’m giving up the bread” Another thing, why wait til Monday? Monday is just a day. If you really want to get healthy/loose fat/gain muscle why not start as soon as possible?!

Who cares what day it is! If you’re going to put it off til Monday, you’re probably going to keep pushing the Monday back further and further, Monday will actually be the symbol of your procrastination rather than anything else. If you know you’re trying your best and you feel you’re informed about your nutrition, keep it up! Don’t fall into any fad diets! Remember, they don’t work long term and they’re most definitely not good for your health!

And trust me, I know. It’s 1000 percent easier said than done… But once you want it and want to do it for you and you only, the rest comes easy. If you’re unsure about what to do, there are SO many health and fitness facilities in Tralee to suit absolutely everyone, so get out there and find the one for you.

On another note, I have a Cookie recipe for you all this week! I have shared this recipe before but I highly recommend. I got this recipe from ChocolateCoveredKatie.com, check out the website she has so many recipes!! • • • • • • • • • •

oat flour (140g) 1/4 tsp salt 1/2 tsp baking soda 4 tbsp coconut sugar (brown sugar will also work) 4 tbsp xylitol or evaporated cane juice (white sugar will also work) 1/4 to 1/3 cup chopped macadamia nuts (or walnuts) 3 tbsp to 1/2 cup chocolate chips (Throw in a big handful. I never bother to measure.) 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 2 tbsp vegetable or melted coconut oil 3-5 tbsp milk of choice, as needed

Instructions Healthy Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe: Preheat oven. Combine all dry ingredients and mix very well. Add wet, and form into a big ball. Now make little balls from the big one. For soft cookies, refrigerate until cold (otherwise, just bake right away). Bake 7 minutes, or until they’ve spread out and look just a little undercooked. Remove from oven when they’re still a little undercooked, then it’s important to let cookies cool at least 10 minutes before trying to remove from tray, as they’ll continue to cook while cooling. For soft cookies, store in a lidded plastic container. For crispy cookies, store in a lidded glass container.

A WOMAN IS PREPARING A DINNER FOR HER PARENTS AND SENDS HER HUSBAND OUT TO BUY SOME FRESH SNAILS.

Realizing he’s extremely late the husband runs home, pours the snails over the path leading to his house, then he rings the bell. His furious wife opens the door. ‘Where the hell have you been?’ she screams. The husband waves back to the snails, ‘Come on, lads!’ he shouts ‘We’re nearly there!’

REVEALED: FULLY-ELECTRIC BMW IX3 WITH 285-MILE RANGE

Based on the BMW X3, the new electric iX3 SUV gets a newly developed electric motor and battery setup that gives it a power output of 286PS and an official WLTP range of 285 miles. Prices are expected to start at £60,000 in the UK The new BMW iX3 looks much like the regular X3 with some extra blue bits of trim, while the battery’s location under the floor of the car means there’s still 510 litres of storage with the seats up or 1560 with the seats down. The iX3 uses BMW’s fifthgeneration eDrive technology, which will be fitted in the BMW iNEXT and BMW i4 models from 2021, too.BMW quotes 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 112mph, and the iX3 will be exclusively rear-wheel drive. Power comes from a rear-mounted electric motor producing 286PS and 400Nm of torque - channelled through a single-speed gearbox.Energy is provided by an 80kWh gross (74kWh net) lithium-ion battery pack and BMW offers a number of different charging possibilities for the iX3, including 150kW DC rapid charging for an 80 per cent charge in 34 minutes.Inside, BMW iX3 is equipped with the latest generation BMW Operating System 7, which allows for the car’s software to be updated wirelessly ‘over the air’ in the future. The latest version of the Intelligent Personal Assistant - like Siri for iPhone - is activated by a spoken prompt (for example “Hey BMW”) or at the touch of a button. The system helps the driver, learns their preferences and is familiar with their favoured settings.UK & Irish prices and specs will be confirmed soon, with sales starting in summer 2021.

FORD ADDS ADVENTURE TO TOURNEOAND TRANSIT CONNECT

Fords van-based Tourneo Connect and Transit Connect are now available to order in the rugged Active trim. The Active trim gets mostly cosmetic updates - including front and rear skidplates along with plastic cladding on the body sides, mirror caps, wheel arches, rear bumper and roof rails. The ride height is raised by 24mm, too. Active models get a bespoke trim, with 17-inch alloy wheels, a signature mesh grille and new seat patterns with blue detailing. Safety features include intelligent speed limiter, pre-collision assist with active braking, side wind stabilisation, and active park assist. The vehicles can also be specified with a mechanical limited-slip differential (called mLSD in Ford speak), which transfers engine torque to the wheel with the most traction in low-grip scenarios. Similar differential technology is used to better the traction and handling of models like the Focus RS and Fiesta ST.All new Tourneo Connect Active and Transit Connect Active models are powered by Ford’s 1.5 litre EcoBlue diesel engine. Available in 100PS or 120PS power outputs, the engine is offered alongside a choice of eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmissions. The five-seat Tourneo Connect Active features a 60/40 split second row bench that folds flat for easy equipment loading and optimised luggage space. The longer Tourneo Grand Connect Active adds two more seats in a third row that folds into the floor when not in use. Load volume remains at 2.9m or 3.6m depending on the wheelbase specified, with payloads reaching 982kg. Deliveries are earmarked for the end of 2020./start 2021

MOTORING QUERIES WITH HONEST JOHN WILL THE JAGUAR X-TYPE BECOME A CLASSIC EVENTUALLY?

I have an excellent conditioned Jaguar X-Type 2.5 with 58,000 miles on it. Is it worth keeping as a possible future classic? Mike HJ says .. Jaguar X-types are taking a while to come through as classics, but there’s definitely a following there. However, we’d recommend keeping a car because you like it and enjoy it - rather than because you think it will appreciate in value.

FLAT SPOTTING TYRES

I put my car off the road because of the virus on 1 May and don’t expect to take it off until 31 August. I had read that increasing the tyre pressures to 40psi would protect them against flat spotting. Is this true? My local garage (specialist but not main dealer) now says I should start the car and just move it about third or half-a-tyre circumference every few weeks. Your advice appreciated please (as always). Thanks. David R. HJ says Slightly increasing the inflation pressure of the tyres by 3PSI will help to reduce the chances of flat-spotting. Just remember that you should never exceed the maximum recommended cold inflation pressure for your tyres.

GILLIAN’S THE TOP KERRY SPORTS PERSON OF THE LAST 30 YEARS: Last Sunday live sport really returned in Kerry with soccer back at Mounthawk Park and the GAA returning with Cromane’s win in the preliminary round of the County Junior Football Championship. With fixtures lists full over the coming weekends the Radio Kerry Sports shows and the weekly papers will be full of match previews and reports rather than reviews and lists of ‘The Greatest’ etc. The only disappointing aspect is the fact the Government did not see fit to allow the 500 in as expected when the put a halt on the reopening of the country. There is no reason why clubs cannot be given the responsibility of up to 500 as they have the sanitisation protocols in place and can equally socially distance the supporters. But hopefully with calls from the top levels of the various sports this might change in the coming weeks. But now that things are returning to the ‘new normal’ it is only right to thank those in the Kerry sports media who kept their offerings full of interesting items each week showing how important sports coverage is in a lot of people’s lives. Top 30 Sports Persons on the Last 30 Years: One of the most interesting challenges was set by Radio Kerry as they asked people to name their top 30 Kerry sports person of the last 30 years to coincide with their 30th birthday. And we say a big Happy Birthday to the station and especially Joe O’Mahoney and all in the Sports Department. It’s a great achievement by all involved but like all celebrations we also remember those who made such a contribution over the three decades but who are now in the big Press Box in the Sky – including Seamus O’Mahony, Liam Higgins, Weehie Forgarty, Timmy Sheehan and Patsy Lynch. Back to the Top 30 and this big discussion was around which was more ‘valuable; in terms of kudos to have in Kerry – an All Ireland winner’s medal or an Olympic medal. In the end the All Ireland came on top in a poll but by less the 1%!!But then when Maurice Fitzgerald was put in with three sports persons from the National stage he got 81% of the vote!! So here is the list from 30 to 1. It is a little disappointing that no male soccer player made the Top 30 with Billy Dennehy just missing out. Anyone else you think should be there from the last 30 years? If so email me at traleeadvertiser@gmail.com. 30-Sean Casey Olympian rowing, 29-Eugene Moriarty cycling, 28- Paidi O’Se football, 27- Jack O’Connor football, 26- Bryan Cooper jockey, 25Jim Culloty rider and trainer, 24-Bryan Sheehan football, 23 – Ciara Griffin rugby, 22-John Teehan basketball, 21-Tadgh Kennelly football, Liam Dowling – greyhounds. 19-Mary Jo Curran football, 18Geraldine O’Shea soccer and football, 17-Mick O’Dwyer, 16-Shane Conway hurling, 15- Jerry Kiernan athletics, 14-Monika Dukarska rowing, 13-Damien Foxall sailing, 12-Paul Griffin Olympian rowing, cycling, 11- Cathal Moynihan Olympian rowing. 10-Maurice Fitzgerald, 9-Dominic Lynch handball, 8-John Lenihan running, 7-Oisin Murphy jockey, 6-Kieran Friday 24th July 2020

COVID – All clubs that are back training are reminding players and parents that they must abide by the protocols that are in place. STACKS NEWS: The club is very proud of its Chair Billy Ryle who walked 100km over 10 nights on the Bracker Regan Road raising much needed funds. Connolly Park is a hive of activity on Sunday mornings with the u6’s, u8’s and u10’s enjoying their training sessions. The u12’s have begun their competitive campaign in the u12’s Lee Strand County League. It’s a great sign of the club to have 3 teams at this age group. The ‘Black’ team took on St Pat’s in Blennerville who got off to a great start. The Tralee boys fought back and finished on a high with a goal from Dennis Brassil but ran out of time as the gap was just to great to pull back. A lot of these players are in their first year at u12’s so can take great credit from this performance. The A team were away to Listowel Emmets who led 3-9 to 1-3 at the break. The Amber team took on Emmet’s C team and put up a big score in an impressive performance. All three teams are in action again this Sunday. There is disappointment that the Lee Strand u13 Tournament will not take place this year but will be back next year. The u14’s and u16’s are training ahead of their League starts. The club also recommends that its Lotto tickets are on sale from the usual outlets.

Kenmare Shamrocks in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday July 25th at 3pm. With ticket restrictions fans who want to watch games can check out the details of the Kerry GAA streaming service with this game due to be streamed. The minors got their campaign off to a winning one defeating Knock/Brosna/ Duagh 1-13 to 2-08. The Juvenile Academy is back in full swing in Ballyrickard at the weekends with new players always welcome. The Ladies side of the game from the u12’s to seniors are also working hard ahead of the start of the seasons. The u14’s defeated the Stacks in a very competitive challenge game during the week.

BALLYMAC NEWS: The seniors get their Junior Premier Championship underway when they face Churchill in Blennerville on Saturday 25th at 7pm. The minors went down to Killorglin in the County League and play Firies this weekend. The underage section of the club is in full swing and the 12’s Blues and Gold sides defeated An Ghaeltacht putting up big scores. The Playball Lotto numbers in the recent draw were 30, 29, 5, 24 and the jackpot for that draw was e640 which was not won. NA GAEIL NOTES: The club is really looking forward to July 25th and the start of the Intermediate Championship where the seniors take on Glenflesk in Castleisland. Sadly due to Covid only a very limited number of tickets are available. The minors had a big win in their opening League game defeating An Ghaeltacht while all the underage sides are training hard as their League openers get close.

PARNELLS NEWS: The club was delighted to see on-field activities returning last weekend. The u12’s enjoyed a 1-07 to 0-03 win over Lixnaw thanks to a strong defensive display and a goal from Conor McGibney which was decisive. In the u14’s the Tralee side were 3-09 to 1-08 winners over Crotta on the newly re-laid Caherslee pitch. Crotta made the better start but Parnells fought back including a great penalty save from Cian Harris. Goals by Will Somers and Odhran Kerins put Parnells in control at the half 2-06 to 0-5 and a second Somers goal wrapped up the win who are away to Ballyduff this Saturday night. On the camogie side the u12’s to seniors are training hard with their competitions set to start in early August including the inaugural Junior B championship where Causeway are the opponents home and away on August 8th and 22nd.

BIG SOCCER WEEKEND: This weekend will see the second full weekend of action in the various divisions of the Denny Kerry District League. With the fine weather and long evenings and the cooperation of the clubs the League should have no issues in finishing all the 2019-2020 competitions by the FAI deadline of mid-September. There are a number of big games this weekend and all soccer fans in Tralee will be wishing Killarney Celtic all the best in the FAI Junior Cup quarter final when they welcome Fairview Rangers to Celtic Park with a 5pm kick-off on Saturday afternoon. With the number allowed into the ground limited to 200 Killarney Celtic plan to stream the game on their Facebook page. With the Underage National League due to kick off the Kerry 13’s, 15’s 17’s and 19’s are all back training ahead of the start in mid-August. This weekend the two younger ages will be taking on Cork City in two challenge games. The 15’s play in Mounthawk at 2pm on Saturday while the 13’s go to Bishopstown on Sunday for a 2.30 kick-off.

KERINS O’RAHILLYS NEWS: The seniors are working hard on the training ground ahead of their Club Championships Group 1 clash against

health protocols. And it is paying off as many families both from Kerry and visiting are booking a meal and enjoying a night at the track. And the racing continues this weekend with racing starting at 7.46pm on Friday night. The highlights are the two semifinals of the John and Mary Killeacle Dowling Memorial stake. On Saturday night the action gets underway at 7.44 while in Sunday the SIS meeting has the first out of the traps at 6.38pm. Qualifying trials take place on Monday mornings from 9.30am to 11am and on Tuesday evening after racing and all trails must be booked online or by calling the racing office on 061448057. IN THE WATER: With many competitive swimming events not taking place one of the major ones – the Across The Bay will be held in August. As part of their training the group took on the Fenit to Tankard 3km swim this week. A WIN FOR VINCENT: The competitive cycling season has gotten underway for the first time since it was put on hold after the Lacey Cup in March. The Michael Shiels race took place in Knockaderry in Co. Limerick on Sunday and while some of the more recognised Kerry riders had days to forget Tralee Manor West rider Vincent O’Leary had a very good day winning the A3 race. PITCH AND PUTT NEWS: This weekend sees us resume competitive Pitch & Putt beyond club level with the staging of the County Strokeplay Championships in both Deerpark and Tralee. Our U16’s get going on Saturday morning at 9am while all the action on Sunday will be in Tralee in the various adult grades. The Junior Men will kick off the day at 8am in the morning following by the Intermediate Men at 11am. The Senior Men and the Ladies will commence at 2pm and we ask players to respect all public health guidelines in partaking on Sunday as well as the protocols that will be in place re winners presentations etc. Elsewhere just a reminder that Tralee will have their 36 hole Scratch Cup event on the August Bank Holiday Monday (you may book a tee-time through the club itself) while at the recent County Board Meeting it was agreed unfortunately not to run either the Inter-Club Matchplay or Bob Casey events this year due to the time lost in the calendar and also to allow clubs time for their own fixtures in what’s left of 2020. The other event which will be run will be this year will be the County Matchplay Championships which will take place on the October Bank Holiday Weekend at Deerpark. The U16 Matchplay event will take place before the schools are due to reopen with details to follow. Entry forms for the National Strokeplay and Matchplay events are currently available as well. The adult National Strokeplay Qualifiers will take place in Newmarket on Sunday August 30th while the details of the National Matchplay Qualifiers will be confirmed in due course.

Not sure is this a good idea Guys! Editorial comment by Chris Shortt

The Boys are back in Town !! Fox and Billy , avid Leeds United and Liverpool fans in great form on the Mall during the week !

A photo of Ballybunion beach at the start of the week sent into Jerry at Radio Kerry ... , now we know why our Govt and its health advisors didnt want to start the next phase last week with the reopening of the pubs ....They are concerned scenes like this will happen when the pubs reopen ...people are people and it wont take many instances like these for things to flare up again! There is a saying in business “ You’re either selling or unselling !” ..In our case , here in Ireland , we were ‘selling’ ...yes , we were doing our damnest to suppress Covid-19 and boy , we have come together to do a good , good job ...but , this , ??? Yep , we’re ‘unselling ‘! .There is another saying in business “Operate your business as if a main competitor is going to open up right beside you within the next 6 months “...Its a way to ensure you stay on top of your game in business ....Thats what we should be doing now in relation to this virus ! Otherwise we just aint going to stay ‘on top of our game ‘ ...People of Kerry , watch out , we have done a lot of the hard lifting , lets not get sidetracked now , especially now !......Chris Shortt
