‘Telling the stories of the Rivers of Tralee - FREE COMMUNITY EVENTS THIS SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER

The rivers of Tralee are often hidden and you may pass over and by them in your daily life without realising it. Transition Kerry and Tralee Bay Wetlands are hosting a series of free community events in September and October, celebrating the rivers of Tralee, including the Big River/The Gyle, the Balloonagh River and of course the lovely River Lee after which the town has been named.

There will be a River Cyclepsychogeographical exploration of Tralee’s rivers, past, present and future(s).

on the 8th September, being led by Keith Phelan. This will start with a talk at the Wetlands starting at 2pm, followed by a cycle along some of the rivers in Tralee town from 3-5pm. This will be an exploration of the psychological and geographical

changes of Tralee’s rivers over time.

On the 28th September, we will meet from 2.30-5pm at the bridge over the Big River/The Gyle on Brewery Road to learn about Life along our Rivers. Here we will learn who we share these rivers with - from otters, birds, bats, fish and insects, all who depend on the river’s quality of water and their vital role as ecological corridors in our urban town. We will learn how we can look after sections of the river and ensure that they are healthy habitats for all.

On the 12th October, we will host the final event in this series, ‘The Rivers of Tralee – An Archaeological Perspective’. We are delighted to have Lar Dunne, a local Tralee archeologist, who will speak about the past 6,000 years - the

archaeology of life in the wetlands of the Tralee / Lee Valley area’.

These public events are all possible with the support of the Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO) and Kerry County Council. To book your place for any

Lean Muscle? ...How Bad Do You Want It?

Les Mills GRIT Cardio with Catriona & Daniel at Zero Gravity Sports Performance in Manor West Hotel Are you ready to push your limits and transform your fitness? Look no further than LES MILLS GRIT Cardio—a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workout that’s as effective as it is exhilarating. Catriona & Daniel , both experienced fitness instructors and with Catriona also very much a HIIT enthusiast, are here to guide you through this transformative workout that promises to build lean muscle, torch stubborn fat, and supercharge your cardiovascular fitness.

What is LES MILLS GRIT Cardio?

LES MILLS GRIT Cardio is a 30-minute HIIT workout designed to challenge your body and mind. It’s not just a workout; it’s a test of how far you’re willing to go to achieve the body you want. “GRIT is where you find out what you’re made of,” says Catriona. “It’s designed to push you to your limits and beyond, but the best part is, you don’t need to be super fit to start. The simple movements are easy to master, and you can go at your own pace.”

How Strong Do You Need to Be?

While some base level of fitness is ideal, LES MILLS GRIT Cardio is accessible to everyone. “You don’t need to be a powerhouse to start,” explains Daniel . “This workout

meets you where you are, and it’s okay to take breaks when you need to. In fact, catching your breath is a sign you’re hitting the max training zone—that’s where the magic happens.”

How Often Should You Do GRIT?

Catriona recommends doing LES MILLS GRIT twice a week for maximum benefit—one session of GRIT Cardio and one of GRIT Strength. “It’s tempting to want to do more because of the endorphin rush,” she says, “but less is more with HIIT. This balance ensures you get the most out of each session without overtraining.”

Why GRIT is the Ideal HIIT Workout

LES MILLS GRIT isn’t just any workout—it’s a scientifically structured program that targets specific heart rate zones to maximize results. “We’re talking about functional exercises that improve your maximum oxygen consumption and significantly reduce the risk of heart disease,” says Catriona. “Plus, it’s incredibly effective at burning stubborn, unhealthy belly fat.” So, how bad do you want it? Whether you’re looking to build strength, improve your cardiovascular fitness, or cut through stubborn fat, LES MILLS GRIT Cardio, led by Catriona along with Daniel , is your fast

Listowel...“The Place to be this September”

This week, Listowel Race Company launched a video campaign which showcases some of the magic and beauty of the North Kerry landscape; the historic and storied past of the vibrant town of Listowel and, most importantly, the wonderful, warm welcome and festivities that await all ages as preparations proceed in earnest for the forthcoming Harvest Racing Festival from Sunday 22nd to Saturday 28th of September. The campaign features well known local faces including horse trainer, Eoin McCarthy, publican and writer, Billy Keane, Chairman of Listowel Race Company, David Fitzmaurice, Secretary/Manager Brenda Daly, Head Groundsman Dan O’Connell, Enclosures Manager, John Sheehan, jockey Aoife O’Brien and this year’s judges of the McElligotts Kia Ladies Day Rosanna Davison and Heidi Higgins. Featuring dramatic footage of the spectacular scenery off

Bromore cliffs, horses riding out on Beale Beach and drone footage of Listowel Town, the core message of the campaign is when you come to the Listowel Races it truly is a complete experience as there is so much to do and see in North Kerry by day and by night! The concept for the campaign was developed by Orla Diffily and produced in association with George Doyle and Paudi Cronin of Neustock Media. It was filmed over approximately 2 weeks from end of July to early August with the crew utilising every sunny day to full advantage. It has a “movie” cinematic texture so as to make it visually appealing and already has over 100,000 views on social media platforms.

Ultimately Listowel Race Company hope it will bring the wonders of the Region and the Races to new audiences locally and nationally.

The pilot overhears their conversation and gives his own suggestion on the matter. and says to Trump

THE DOCTOR

SAYS The doctor says, “Larry, everything looks great. How are you doing mentally and emotionally?

Are you at peace with God?”

Larry replies, “God and I are tight. He knows I have poor eyesight, so He’s fixed it so when I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, poof! The light goes on. When I’m done, poof! The light goes off.”

“Wow, that’s incredible,” the doctor says. A little later in the day, the doctor calls Larry’s wife. “Bonnie,” he says, “Larry is doing fine! But I had to call you because I’m in awe of his relationship with God. Is it true that he gets up during the night, and poof, the light goes on in the bathroom, and when he’s done, poof, the light goes off?”

“Oh, no,” exclaims Bonnie. “He’s peeing in the refrigerator again!”

“March 1st,” the man replies. Suddenly, the blonde gets up and stomps around the bar before coming back to her seat.

“So when is your birthday?” the woman again asks. Not being too phased by this odd behavior, the man again answers “March 1st.” Again, the blonde woman stomps around the bar, this time louder and longer.

When back at her seat, she angrily demands, “Are you going to tell me your birthday, or are you just going to keep telling me to march around the damn bar again?

BALLYMACELLIGOTT

GAA CLUB NOTES

Senior Men:

In the Kerry Petroleum Premier Junior Football Club Championship Quarter Final, Ballymacelligott faced Annascaul at John Mitchel’s. Despite an early scare when Annascaul closed the gap with three consecutive points and nearly took the lead, a crucial point-blank save by Christy Leen kept Ballymac in control. Ballymac ultimately secured a 1-19 to 1-12 victory, earning a place in the semifinal. Congratulations to our team and special recognition to Christy Leen for his game-changing save.

Senior Ladies:

Our Senior Ladies will face Inbhear Scéine Gaels in Kenmare on Monday, needing a win after a disappointing loss to Fossa in their last match. Despite a strong start in that game, Ballymac fell short, finishing with a scoreline of 2-10 to Fossa’s 4-8. We hope to see strong support for the team as they approach their quarter-final.

U16 Squad:

Our U16 girls played in the Division 6 County League Shield semi-final against Listowel, narrowly missing out on a victory. Despite scoring more, Listowel’s goals were decisive. The team, which includes many U14 and U13 players, has shown great promise throughout the year. Next, they will compete in the North Kerry League.

U14 Girls:

The U14 girls will play against Brosna on Friday night.

Academy:

Our U5s showed great energy in their Academy session this week, enjoying matches and skills practice with their coaches. Academy training continues every Sunday at 11 am. Under 8 Girls:

The U8 girls traveled to Castleisland on Sunday morning, playing three competitive games. The team’s kicking, passing, and skills continue to improve.

Under 9 Boys:
