Tomato time!

IN THE GARDEN WITH NAOMI!

Naomi from Kingdom Garden Centre answers your gardening queries...

SOME GARDENING TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER.

This is the end of your tomato season so you can pick any green tomatoes now. The way to ripen the green tomatoes is into a dry cardboard box with bananas. Place in a warm room and close the box. Check every few days, your tomatoes will turn red in no time . This is the time to either freeze them or just simply enjoy them.

Perennials in seed?

Are your perennials in seed now? , if so, save that seed for next Spring..... just make sure your seed is really dry when storing. Or the lazy way is just sprinkle away in your perennial bed and watch them come alive in the spring. Now is the time to divide your perennials also in order to keep them flowering profusely and retain a healthy plant.

Store those Spring Bulbs

September is the month that you purchase your spring bulbs. These can be planted mainly in November but availability is now in the garden centres so my advice is go buy the bulbs now and have them stored and ready to plant.

We have a full range of bulbs, garlic and onions in stock now so come see us at Kingdom Garden centre.

Any queries about your indoor plants just send a picture to info@kingdomgardencentre.ie or what’s app to

Opening hours for our garden centre are 9 to 5pm Mon to Sat & 10 to 5pm Sun / Bank holidays.

LEGAL MATTERS CORNER

MIRIAM

MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES

Helen is looking at cycling to work for health reasons and reducing car emissions. She understands that she could get a good hard-wearing bicycle under the bicycle to work scheme, and she is wondering how she could go about this. She is also worried about bicycle security.

The cycle to work or bike to work scheme allows for your employer to buy a bicycle up to certain price limits plus accessories which will be yours, but which is then paid back with deduction from your wages over a 12-month period. This amount is tax deductible which means that your wages for that year are taxed after taking off the cost of the bicycle. If you pay tax at 40% it means that the bicycle only cost, you 60% of the total cost of the bicycle and accessories. The price limits on the bicycle depend on the type of bicycle which must be new. It is €3,000 for cargo and ecargo bikes. These are bicycles that are made to carry heavy loads and people. Useful for the shopping on the way home from work!

It is €1,500 for pedelecs and e-bikes. Electrically assisted Bikes that also involves pedalling.

It is €1,250 for other bicycles.

The accessories that can be included in the cost includes bells and bulb horns, lights including lights on a dynamo, mirrors, mudguards, cycle clips, panniers and luggage carriers and accoutrements, bicycle locks, bicycle pumps and repair tools, reflective clothing and reflectors. So these can all be included in the one invoice that goes to the employer to be paid. Each employer will have a cycle to work policy setting out how the scheme will work. They may specify a list of shops from which one buys the equipment and for Civil and Public Servants they can only purchase from a specific list of shops. The bike and accessories need to be paid for by the employer and the employee must sign a confirmation for the revenue commissioners that the bicycle is for their own use and for getting to and from work. The bicycle is the employees subject to the 12 months of deductions from Salary. Once one has availed of the scheme one cannot avail of it again until 4 years have expired.

The bike to work scheme has been wildly successful and has been operating since 2009 with knock on economic effects, increased cycle to work commuters, more bicycle shops with a greater number of employees employed. Pedal power in action. !

Ray & Joe cycle the Algarve to help raise funds for Inspired.

Inspired, based in Tralee, has been actively providing training, social integration, and employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Over the past two years, participants have engaged in workshops on sustainable food practices and eco-crafts at their Bio-Hub. Now, Inspired is launching a fundraising initiative to enhance their biodiversity efforts and community impact.

Local heroes Joe Moriarty and Ray Moynihan will embark on a 500km cycling challenge across the scenic Algarve from October 5th to 12th. All funds raised will go toward constructing a new polytunnel at the Bio-Hub, which will expand opportunities for participants to grow organic food. To support this venture, donations can be made at www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/ InspiredTralee23

The Bio-Hub has thrived through

generous funding from Rethink Ireland and Creative Climate

Action Ireland. Participants have learned to grow their own food, fostering a connection with nature and promoting sustainability. With the new polytunnel, they will cultivate more fruits and vegetables year-round, advancing toward entrepreneurship. Their produce will contribute to local food security, with unsold items donated to Meals on Wheels and Food Share Kerry, and inedible food composted to complete the food loop system. Joe Moriarty said, “Every kilometre we cycle will help build the polytunnel and empower individuals to create their business and engage in sustainable practices.” Ray Moynihan added, “Cycling the Algarve is a challenge, but the joy it brings to our workshop participants makes it all worthwhile.”

The cycling challenge promotes

ecological awareness and calls on the community to get involved. Donations and participation in upcoming events will help

nurture sustainable agriculture, entrepreneurial spirit, and community support. Together, we can grow a better future for all.

Tralee’s Slimming World members step out to fundraise!

Slimming World members in Kerry have raised an impressive €2,500 for the Irish Cancer Society through their recent fundraising efforts. Tralee Slimming World group consultants, Nora Butler and Sharon Brosnan, were thrilled with the success of their members’ initiative.

All groups participated in local walks across Tralee, Killarney, and

Killorglin. Nora expressed her delight at seeing members not only joining their own group’s walks but also attending other groups’ events to show support. “It was wonderful to witness the sense of connection and camaraderie among everyone,” she said. “The chats and the all-important cuppa afterward made it even more special.”

Sharon highlighted the importance of incorporating exercise into daily life, explaining how it enhances both physical and mental well-being. “Exercise is encouraged in our groups to keep members motivated, helping

them tone up and slim down,” she shared. “Members who add activity into their routine find it incredibly beneficial for both mind and body.”

Nora added, “We are so proud of our members for participating, and we’re excited to plan more regular social walks in the future.”

The event was a great success, bringing members together for a worthy cause while promoting healthy habits and a strong sense of community.

Connollys Jewellers Retirement Sale to finish in November

Connolly Jewellers on Bridge Street, Tralee, is offering customers a special retirement sale, with 30% to 50% off selected items, as owners Norma and Martin Hartnett prepare to close the beloved store this Autumn. After decades of service, the couple has announced their well-deserved early retirement, marking the end of an era for a family business that has been part of Tralee’s community since the 1950s.Connollys Jewellers reputation within the Irish jewellery trade, and beyond , was one of a leading progressive retailer, with Norma in particular having a record of setting trends as opposed to following them .

The store, originally founded by Norma’s parents, Gerry and Birdie, has been a fixture in Tralee’s retail scene for over 70 years. Reflecting on their time at the helm, Martin shared, “Connolly Jewellers has brought so much joy through the years, whether it was helping customers select a new piece or restoring something sentimental. It has truly been an honour to be part of so many special moments.”

Despite the challenges of the modern retail landscape, Martin emphasized that the decision to retire was purely personal, saying, “Standing in the same place for over 30 years has taken its toll, and it’s simply time for a rest.”Customers with outstanding orders or repairs

will be contacted individually, and watch guarantees will be honored by the brands themselves. The Hartnetts also assured that the current staff, many of whom are returning to college, will not be affected by the closure. For those looking to commemorate

Connolly Jewellers’ final weeks, this eight week retirement sale offers a chance to take home a piece of its history at a special price.

Late equaliser spoils Kerry FC’s performance!

Kerry FC made their final trip to Limerick for the 2024 season, facing Treaty United at the Markets Field on Friday evening. Both teams entered the game after defeats, with Kerry FC losing 1-0 to UCD and Treaty United suffering a 5-0 defeat to Bray Wanderers.

Treaty United, sitting ten points ahead of Kerry FC, hadn’t won since August 10th, while Kerry FC’s last

league win was on June 13th. Kerry, eager to break their winless streak, started strongly, with Valerii Dolia firing a shot on goal within two minutes, but Treaty’s keeper Corey Chambers saved it.

Kerry dominated possession in the first half, creating several chances, including a disallowed goal from Sean McGrath for offside. Treaty responded with limited

opportunities, and the game remained goalless at halftime.

In the second half, Kerry’s persistence paid off in the 58th minute when Sean McGrath scored a brilliant solo goal, giving the visitors the lead. Kerry nearly doubled their advantage when Dolia hit the crossbar.

As the game progressed, Kerry’s keeper, Antonio Tuta, made key

saves to preserve the lead. However, in the 100th minute, Treaty United equalized through Evan O’Connor after a scrappy goal, ending the match in a 1-1 draw. Kerry FC now prepares to host champions Cork City next Friday.
