Tralee Chess Club Notes In Munster Chess League Division 1 matches in Charleville, County Cork, Tralee Chess Club faced a challenging Sunday. Unfortunately, Mirko Kopic, Oleksander Zakcadnyi from Ukraine, and 14-year-old Tadhg Long from Listowel faced losses. In the evening, Tralee took on Cork CYMS, emerging victorious with a 3.5 to 1.5 scoreline. Fabian secured another win, and Yunis and Mirko also claimed victories, while Tadhg had a dramatic draw. Michael from Nexgen Cyber answers your queries in helping keep your business (and you!) secure online This weeks topic is PASSWORDS. Question: I know I should not reuse passwords, but with so many applications how am I supposed to remember them all? Michael says: "I understand your frustration. Your first line of defence against cyberattacks is a strong password. However, creating and managing complex passwords for all your accounts can be daunting. This is where a password manager comes in. A password manager securely stores your passwords, eliminating the need to remember them all. It generates strong, unique passwords for all your accounts and auto-fills them when needed. The result? You enjoy the best of both worlds: convenience and security. We can recommend and help you implement a trusted password manager, ensuring that you’re in the safest hands. For that one master password needed for your password manager try using three random words. This is a strategy for creating passwords that are hard to crack but easy to remember. It involves combining three words that are not related to each other, such as “Blueberry sunshine plane”. Then add complexity by changing upper case, lower case, numbers, and symbols, so you end up with “B!u3b3rry$un$hin3Plan3”. The idea is that the longer and more unusual the password is, the harder it is for a cybercriminal to guess or break it...”

Scoil Eoins Christmas Shoebox Appeal... best ever collection! The Scoil Eoin community of pupils, parents and friends are renowned for their generosity, but

this year’s collection of Christmas Shoeboxes for Team Hope has surpassed all previous years. In total they collected 380 boxes bursting at the seams with gifts. This is an annual event here in Scoil Eoin. The interest of the pupils in the drive never wanes. The Student Council members along with their coordinator Mrs. Carol Anne O’Donoghue organised this amazing appeal in aid of Team Hope. Team Hope is an Irish charity that works to help children affected by poverty in Eastern Europe and Africa. They work to bring positive long term change through their annual Shoebox Appeal and Sustainable Development Projects. Every year thousands of gift filled shoeboxes are sent from Ireland. It is very appealing to young children when they realise that their carefully selected items will be given directly to a child in need. Team Hope Representative Mick O’Connell from Listowel collected all of the boxes from Scoil Eoin. He had to make two trips with the sheer volume of boxes. Scoil Eoin are looking forward to next year already.

READ ABOUT SOPHIE’S JOURNEY WITH US Hi my name is Sophie. I was a student in the National Learning Network for five years. Before I came to the National Learning Network I was in mainstream school in Killarney where I was bullied and found it very difficult to get on with other people and make friends. I found the work very difficult because of my condition which made it harder to learn for me. My Guidance counsellor recommended the National Learning Network Tralee for me. I started searching about the National Learning Network and found that this was the place for me because it has small class sizes, no leaving cert points needed, students learn at their own pace and students are supported all the time. I began with directions which is a QQI Level 3 course. I completed this course for 3 years. I completed modules like personal and interpersonal skills, self-advocacy, career preparation, work experience, and computers just to name a few. This course helped me to explore various careers. I learned so much during this course such as budgeting and independence. Because of this course and thanks to the instructors, I was the first student in the course to live independently and still am for 9 years. I experienced various work experiences on this course such as retail and working in schools and even got to sample other courses too. After directions, I went on to Sporting Chance which is a QQI Level 5 in Sports, Recreation and Exercise. I knew this course was for me as I am mad into sports and fitness. During Sporting Chance, I gained various qualifications such as Gym Instructor, Personal Training, Sports Massage, Kickstart level 1, Assistant Swim Teachers level 1, and lifeguard. I also got to complete various work experiences in gyms. This course gave me the opportunity to go further and pursue my career in MTU Kerry where I have completed a Level 7 and currently finishing a Level 8 in Coaching and Sports Performance. The National Learning Network changed my life so much. It made me feel inclusive where I was able to get on with everyone. I felt I was listened to and really supported by the staff. I didn’t feel under pressure to learn because classes were small, and it was easier to learn at my own pace. It gave me the opportunity to go further with my education which allowed me to go to MTU Kerry and pursue my education further as well as gain confidence and support while living independently. My future involves going back to MTU Kerry to complete my master’s and open my own business as a personal trainer. This wouldn’t have been possible without the help of the National Learning Network which I like to call a second home.

Keep your Business in Tralee and keep Tralee in Business!

Now here’s a great idea for the Bank Holiday!! Looking for stuff to do over the bank holiday weekend ? Well if you are into music ,,( who isnt ?) ...then put this on your list ...its a Vinyl and CD Market taking place this Sunday in the Scout Hall , in Garveys Supervalu Carpark . It runs from 11am -4pm, admission is free and this show is taking the country by storm as in the next few days it will be in Waterford Cork Tralee & Limerick .

This event is run by 8 music fanatics (called RecordFairs United !) one of whom is Tralee’s own Bryan Lee , ( of Lee Records fame ) , Bryan will be there this Sunday so call in and say hello ...he’ll be mad to chat about music and who knows , you may just pick up a few Vinyl CD or Cassette gems on Sunday afternoon !

Pig’s Lane... Killarney’s first underground bar with plenty of surprises in store! Killarney’s newest gem, Pig’s Lane, is a subterranean haven for enthusiasts of hand-crafted cocktails, sustainable wines, and live music. Nestled on College Street, it’s the town’s first underground bar, masterminded by the same family-run team responsible for acclaimed venues like Café du Parc, The Tan Yard, and O’Donoghue Public House - the O’Donoghue Ring Collection.

Pig’s Lane takes its name from the former Pig’s Lane that ran from College Street through Railway Road in the early 1900s. A lamp-lit archway beckons guests to descend a beautifully tiled staircase, evoking the charm of old underground railways. Behind the scenes, Ariel Sanecki, a seasoned cocktail competition winner and the new Drinks Development Manager, has crafted an exquisite cocktail menu. Locally sourced garnishes and homemade syrups complement the best Irish spirits. Groups can share antiquated punch bowls, steeped in tradition and filled with libations featuring local spirits, cold brew herbal teas, and fruity accents. The bar also offers a thoughtfully curated wine list featuring natural, biodynamic, and sustainable varieties from small producers committed to environmental care. Wines from Romania, Crete, Czech Republic, and Lebanon invite wine enthusiasts on a journey beyond traditional terroirs, contributing to a greener future. The hidden whiskey parlour is a treasure trove of over 120 rare

bottles from international producers and collectors. While it showcases the finest Scotch, Japanese, and Bourbon bottles, premium Irish whiskeys are the focal point, including exclusive and rare releases. Newly appointed Group Development Chef Janice Casey Brackens has crafted a menu of snacks and small plates using the freshest local ingredients, including produce from the innovative Killarney Urban Farm next door.

Music is an integral part of the experience, with a diverse mix of genres. The eclectic house playlist sets the tone, while well-known artists, bands, and DJs deliver intimate live performances underground. Open seven days a week from 5 pm, Pig’s Lane is a unique hideaway just in time for the approaching darker months.

Keep your Business in Tralee and keep Tralee in Business!

Can Cryotherapy save my 5 a side soccer career? They say you know you are getting older when it takes you longer to recover from the event than the length of the event itself ! Well here I am , born in ‘65 ( work it out for yourself ...I won’t admit it ! ) and like to think I enjoy being active ..whether it’s walking with herself ( Colette!) , Cycling ..( did the Greenway last Sunday , fantastic ) , Swimming ...love the Sea Swimming ...or even the odd game of golf ( played recently again after a 13 year break ! ). And dare I admit it , I play soccer twice a week , every Tuesday ( 5 a side indoor in Cuman Iosef ) and Wednesday ( 7 a side in the Complex Astro pitch) ...oh why are the 2 games back to back ...n0 recovery there ! And therein lies the problem , ( well apart from Father time !) ..I’ve been playing now ever since I arrived in Tralee from Galway in 1989 ...wow ..I’m now 35 years playing ...and still enjoying it ,, albeit at maybe a slower pace ...! Goalie was my main position but enjoy outfield too ! And injuries could be counted on one hand TG ..Quads, Hamstring , Calf pulls mainly ..and yes an MCL injury to my knee in 2022 (that took a good while to come back from ) ...So how am I going to continue playing ? , ( If every week , my body could be screaming at me to stop ...or at least go down to 1 day a week ) But as Barney Mc Kenna , the Banjo player in the Dubliners , replied when asked , “ when are you going to retire ? “ ...he retorted , while continuing to strumm ...” too late to stop now !” The question nags me every week ...its very social , great group of lads , enjoyable and competitive enough to keep you running after the ball ! Well maybe the answer is right in

front of me ..a secret treatment that was once only enjoyed by the rich, famous, well heeled and connected ...and of course ...by the Kerry footballers! ( ask Barry John Keane ) ! You see, there is a business family in town that have invested heavily in state of the art technology to run their empire , mainly the Tanning Studio , but as I only found out this year when I started working with Mario and Illona through The Tralee Advertiser , they also have installed a ‘Top of the Range ‘ Cryotherapy Chamber in the premises, The Sun Factory Tanning Salon in Rock St (opposite Supervalu ). They also operate FroYo land ( Ice Cream Bar etc ) but thats another story . So last Monday on Marios invitation , I went along to my 3pm appointment for my inaugural session in the Cryo Chamber ...not knowing what to expect from a visit to a chamber that goes down to minus -160 degrees .. it was ‘.created ‘ in 1978 in Japan ,designed to heal certain injuries ) ...and the session lasts approximately 3 minutes ( if you can handle it ! .most can ) with Mario in attendance supervising the whole time ...You see , the way Cryotherapy works, and the secret behind Cryotherapy is that it speeds up recovery of the body whether from injuries or just Father time taking its toll on the body ...Initially as the cold temperature hits you , your brain will trigger a rush of adrenaline and endorphins into your bloodstream, skin temperature will drop to around zero degrees, but your core temperature will remain at approx 37 degrees ..after the session you will feel a tingling sensation over your skin surface ( yes , I did! ) which has an energetic euphoric effect ( yes ..felt that too !) as oxygenated

blood pumps around your body , helping to reduce inflammation . Effectively your capillaries expand to 4 times their normal size , which enables your white blood cells to start the healing process which speeds up the recovery by 50% over the natural process . Other benefits that have been documented from Cryotherapy include pain relief ,reduced inflammation , increased energy , enhanced mental well-being as well as skin rejuvenation . Thats the simple explanation ! How did I feel afterwards? Well I did get tingling in my toes ( I was supposed to put the supplied socks on going in ,,,but too busy chatting to Mario and taking snaps ! ) and Yes , initially I will say that I felt ‘ better ‘ on Monday evening and the body was more relaxed and not as stiff /sore in the lead up to my 8pm game on Tuesday ..and as I write this late Tuesday night , the body maybe isn’t talking to me as much ...but time will tell..its not a magic bullet..initially ..as Mario reckons 1 session a week to feel the ongoing benefits of Cryo and if you are recovering from injury , 2 sessions a week should have a pronounced effect on your recovery

. Roll on next weeks session ...I will keep you posted .. By the way Meet Dan Hickey! , an Ardfert man who I met on Monday in with Mario...you see Dan is a sprightly 80 year old and as he says himself . “ I suffer a lot from swollen and Inflamed knees and my legs “ ...This was impacting on Dans ability to walk , but is now a regular visitor to the Cryotherapy Chamber ( about twice a week ) and he swears by it ...the relief it has given him has been ‘lifechanging ‘ and walking isn’t the issue it used to be ...Hows that for a recommendation ! Mario is constantly running introductory offers for the Cryo Chamber so you can try a session out ...Just tell him Chris the legendary Soccer player sent you ! ( Mario 066-7120873 Sun Factory Tanning Salon Rock St Tralee )

Kerry FC earn point in season finale Cobh Ramblers 1-1 Kerry FC Matchday thirty-six saw Kerry FC play for the final time this season as they took on Cobh Ramblers in St. Coleman’s Park. Kerry FC now go into next season

unbeaten in the final two games as they closed the curtain on their debut season in League of Ireland senior football. A season of highs and lows, but the spirit the squad and staff have given till the very end will form a fantastic foundation going into the 2024 season when it starts back in February. An unbelievable travelling support from the Kerry faithful were by far the loudest in the stadium on Friday and hopefully, we will get to see more of this in the future. photographs from Adam Kowalczyk.
