LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES

Holiday Scenes Tralee Advertiser 12th April 2017. Dave and Nora booked a package holiday with a well know tour operator. It included the flights, accommodation including half board (breakfast and evening meal) and some tours around their sunny destination. Unfortunately due to a number of issues at the resort they had the holiday from hell. There were renovation works going on round the clock at the hotel resulting in noise and dust, the food was inedible, their room was small and cramped with no view despite paying extra for a view and some of the tours did not go ahead. They complained to the local representative but she could not move them due to it being high season what can they do? Luckily Dave and Nora had booked this as a package holiday so they have remedies under the Package Holidays and Travel Trade Act 1995. This is in the one big advantage of booking with a tour operator rather than putting it together oneself online. This act applies to package holidays at home or abroad over 24 hours in length, which include a combination of at least two of the following; 1. Transport 2. Accommodation 3. Other Tourist Service Accounting For A Significant Part Of The Package E.g. . Fishing Outing /Murder Mystery Tour pre-arranged by the Organiser sold at an inclusive price There is a legal requirement to put certain essential details in the brochure. And they must supply you with certain information in the holiday contract. They must be bonded so that there is money there to bring you home and refund the cost of your holiday if they become insolvent. In addition there are rights to get up to twice the inclusive cost of the holiday back for the travelling adults and the cost of the holiday back for a minor where there have been serious problems with the holiday. The Company must be notified as soon as possible to the representative at the holiday destination and to the tour operator within 28 days of coming home of the issues. This act means that you get very detailed information now in your holiday brochure prior to booking and also that in your holiday contract there is very detailed information to ensure that the holiday organizer cannot get out of their statutory responsibilities. The act ensures that one can transfer the holiday to some one else if one could not go on it for whatever reason. The act operates as a type of insurance and assurance to people booking with tour operators that their holiday should be of the quality advertised and gives them a right to refund with additional trauma money to a limited amount where it was the holiday from hell. Law quip: When in Columbia say no to anyone wanting to deliver a suitcase of powdered sugar to their grandmother in Miami. SPRING HIKING SAFETY IN KERRY Ahead of the Irish Red Cross Sunrise Summit Challenge in Kerry, on Sunday April 30th, charity challenge guide Ronan Mullen from Adventure.ie offers five key tips for spring hiking safety. With the long evenings and better weather now is the perfect time to get your walking boots on. Ireland boasts hundreds of tracks and trails suitable for all levels of fitness. Be sure to take necessary precautions before heading out to the hills this spring.

benefits to be gained from hitting the trail, but hitting it too hard can result in injury and ruin the enjoyment for you.

Check the forecast Don’t be fooled by good weather in your locality. Always check a reliable weather source for the full day forecast in the area you plan to hike before you leave. Given the changeability of Irish weather, take a lightweight waterproof jacket even if sun is forecast for the day.

Research your planned routes Consult a good old fashioned map or a reliable online source to check the distance and difficulty of your planned route. Planning ahead is important as you may come across an unexpected climb or river that you are not prepared or experienced for. Also, check if your planned route is a loop back to your starting point or does it end somewhere else. Remember to check if there is public transport available to get back to your car if your route is not a loop.

Know your limits Start with shorter hikes if you are getting fit or new to hiking. There are countless health

If something goes wrong you’ll need maximum battery. Pop it into a ziplock bag to keep it dry and carry it on you so it’s near to hand. Bring a buddy Hiking in groups is a fun way to explore Ireland’s mountain tracks and trails. It can also be safer than hiking alone. Organise to go with a group of friends or join up with a social group. Whether you hike alone or in a group, tell someone where you are going and when to expect you back. If something goes wrong and they can’t contact you, they will know to send help.

The Irish Red Cross 2017 Sunrise Summit Challenge will take place on Sunday, 30th April at a choice of six mountain locations around Ireland. The charity night hike raises funds for communities affected by natural disasters and conflict worldwide and has routes available for most levels of fitness and experience. LOTS OF TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS AT THE HEALTH & WELLBEING EVENING HOSTED BY LEE STRAND AND THE NATIONAL DAIRY COUNCIL Four hundred people attended the Lee Strand & National Dairy Council Health & Wellbeing Evening on Thursday in the Brandon Hotel in Tralee. The evening was a star studded event with a host of high profile speakers including former Irish Olympian Derval O’Rourke; Kerry Football Legend and Dancing with the Stars Winner Aidan O’Mahony; Dietitian Paula Mee and RTE’s Fitness & Performance Expert Joe O’Connor. Radio Kerry’s Deirdre Walsh was a wonderful MC at the event. Renowned Dietitian Paula Mee kicked off the evening with a presentation on Nutrition & You and encouraged us to Grow Strong; Be Strong and Stay Strong. Paula believes that you don’t have to completely overhaul your diet to make an impact on health. Small changes, made repeatedly, can have a big and positive effect. RTE’s Fitness and 10 TRALEE ADVERTISER

Performance Expert Joe O’Connor has appeared on Ireland’s Fittest Family for the past 4 years and currently working with Athletics Ireland, Horse Sport Ireland and Limerick GAA. Joe presented Fitness 4 Health and stated “One size does not fit all when it comes to fitness and training. Adopting a fitness regime that somebody else enjoys will not necessarily be one that you will enjoy.” He suggested identifying your limiting factors, setting goals and developing a plan to achieve those goals. An engaging Q&A followed with Aidan O’Mahony, hot off his impressive win and dance moves on RTE’s Dancing with the Stars. Aidan spoke about the challenges of learning to dance for the popular show, his successful sporting career and also gave the audience Friday 14th April 2017

an insight into his nutrition and exercise regime. Irish Olympian and cookery book author, Derval O’Rourke, ended the evening with a demonstration of some her favourite healthy recipes. Derval showed the audience how to make delicious and healthy Overnight Oats with

fruit toppings, her Stopwatch Brown Bread, a simple Tomato Soup, a Mexican Burrito Bowl and Apple and Cheese Stacks. Derval’s recipes can be found at www.ndc.ie/recipes All proceeds from the event admission tickets and raffle went to the Donal Walsh Livelife Foundation.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... SERIOUS ROCKFALL AT SKELLIG MICHAEL VISITOR SITE The Office of Public Works (OPW) announced this week that another significant rockfall has occurred at the famous Skellig Michael UNESCO World Heritage Site in Co. Kerry, with a large amount of material being deposited from upper slopes onto the roadway in an area vital to the OPW operation on the Island. This follows on a similar event that occurred in the winter of 2015/16 when boulders falling from the steep slopes above caused damage to the Lighthouse Road and its seaward wall, for a time threatening visitor access to the Monastic site last summer and causing concern at the implications for tourist safety. The rockfall was discovered on Friday, April 7th when staff of the OPW arrived at the Island to carry out the normal preseason maintenance works and safety checks before the scheduled opening to visitors in Mid-May next. The OPW workers had been delayed somewhat by bad weather in recent days and last Friday was the first opportunity they had to access the site. “It is frequently problematic to get to the site in April” said Grellan Rourke, the OPW’s Senior Conservation Architect for Skellig Michael. “We would normally expect to have to deal with some level of winter

storm damage and our staff usually have to do a good deal of clean-up work before the site is ready for visitors, but the level of rockfall we have encountered this year is highly exceptional and, because of where it has come down, deeply worrying indeed.” The rocks, shale and other debris material which has been discovered is located on the Island’s Lighthouse Road close to the accommodation huts maintained on the Island for use during the summer by the OPW’s conservation works staff. The accommodation consists of a number of lightweight prefabricated structures which are used during the season when the Island is open to visitors and while none of the huts were actually damaged by the falling rocks, the rubble has landed close enough to them to give rise to serious concern. Mr. Rourke said today, “Some of the material is very large and would definitely have caused severe damage to the structures had they been hit directly. It’s quite clear that, had these rocks come down directly on top of the huts, there would have been a significant threat to anyone inside.” The OPW stressed that it

is too early at this stage to speculate about the possible effect of this event on visitors and whether the opening date for the Island on 14th May is under threat. The normal areas where visitors are allowed are not directly affected by this rockfall and no debris has landed in areas where

they normally congregate; however, the OPW staff presence on the Island is vital to the management of the visitor operation and any threat to their safe functioning and the provision of a safe place of work for them is a significant issue that needs to be addressed.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... TRALEE COMMUNITY GARDEN PROJECT

With fantastic weather participants had a lovely start to this year’s public season with the Tralee Community Garden Project in the Town Park. Saturday was sunny and warm for the KWD Kerry County Clean Up. Thanks to all for their hard work and to those who donated plastic soda bottles at the garden. The project are collecting these for the new recycled plastic bottle green house being built this year which is part supported by Local Agenda 21 funding. This years opening again attracted International participation. You can see Hartigan and his sister Keira Deely from New York, USA proudly showing off their contribution to keeping the county clean. Visiting their grand parents who live in Tralee the children were accompanied by Mom Betty and Dad Thomas who also helped on the day. The project would be delighted with any further donations of rinsed 2 litre clear plastic bottles as it helps recycle and positively use this waste product. We are in the garden on Saturdays from 10.30 am – 12.30pm, come along and get involved you will be welcomed.

COMPETITION WIN A FAMILY OF 4 TICKET TO THE WOLF AND PETER BY COISCÉIM DANCE THEATRE ON THURSDAY 20TH OF APRIL AT 2.30PM

Q: NAME THE COMPANY PRESENTING THE WOLF AND PETER?

ANSWER:

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: PRESCRIPTION CHARGES Question I have a medical card but I seem to be paying more than the monthly cap for prescription charges for my family. Why would this happen and how can I get a refund?

NAME:

Answer If you have a medical card, there is a charge for each prescription item you receive. The prescription charge is €2.50, up to a maximum of €25 per month per person or family. For medical card holders over the age of 70 there is a reduced prescription charge, from 1 March 2017, of €2 per item up to a maximum of €20 per month. Usually your pharmacy keeps records of how much you have paid in prescription charges and makes sure that you do not pay more than the limit each month. However, you may use different pharmacies in the same month, or your family members may not be set up as a family group, and you may end up paying more than the maximum. If this happens, the Health Service Executive (HSE) will issue a refund without the need for you to apply for it. This is done on the basis of the information received from pharmacies. Refunds are issued every six months for amounts over €10. Amounts that are less than €10 are carried over to the next refund date. You can set up your family as a family group on medicalcard.ie and print off a family certificate to give to your pharmacist. This will show all of the members of your family so that your pharmacy will not collect charges above the monthly limit. Your family is defined as you, your spouse or partner, any children under 16 years of age and any children between 16 and 21 years of age who are in full-time education. If you do not have access to the internet you can ask your Local Health Office to help with setting up a family group. You can also call the HSE on 1890 252 919 or ask your local pharmacist who may be able to help you.

BEXBLAH

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A FANTASTIC WEEK! This week I will be talking about my current favourite fat burning exercises to do at the gym.

1. Stairmaster - when I was home in Tralee recently I discovered this machine for the first time in the Brandon Gym. What a workout! Within 10 mins I was literally dripping sweat. The benefits of the stairmaster are as follows: Tone and sculpt your entire lower body. Stair climbing engages every major muscle in your lower body: glutes, hamstrings, quadriceps and calves. High repetitions are famous for building lean muscle and

burning fat which results in toned and sculpted muscles. 2. Tabata Kettlebell Swings - this exercise is a part of my new plan that I’m doing. It really gets the heart rate going! You basically swing the 1015kg kettlebell as fast as you can with proper form for 20 secs and then rest for 10 secs and repeat 8 times. It’s an amazing fat burning workout.

3. Walking Lunges - I have more of a love/hate relationship with these. I hate the thought of doing them but I love it when I’m doing them and can feel it all in my lower body. The benefits include improved balance, symmetrical toning,

26

glute toning, improved core stability and they also boost hip flexibility. So basically they’re a fantastic total body workout! 4. Sprints - definitely my favourite as they get the sweat pumping and the heart rate right up! I sprint for 20/30 seconds and rest for 10 and repeat it as much as possible.

Bexblah Beauty This page is sponsored by Munster Robes & Kitchens

Hello my beautiful friends! I hope you’re all having a fab week. I hope you all enjoyed my Beauty Detox tips last week! I was working as a Makeup Artist at the IFTAs on Saturday so I will be talking about that next week. This week I will be talking about my current mascara & lash favourites! I’m obsessed with lashes lately, OBSESSED.

1

2

L’oreal Telescopic: You will ALWAYS find this mascara in my makeup collection. I absolutely love it. It’s about €15/€16, a bit pricey for drugstore makeup but I’m obsessed. Great for length!

3

Benefit They’re Real: When I first tried this product I really didn’t get the hype. I got a sample size and I’m converted. This stuff is amazing, again adds tonnes of length and doesn’t clump! It’s €26.

Lancôme Hypnose Mascara: Ever since starting working at Lancôme I have become obsessed with this mascara. It’s amazing! Gives great length and volume without clumping.

LASHES FOR DAYS

1

2

Nubounsom Bella Lashes: My go to night out lashes. These are perfectly dramatic & glam for every occasion. Even though they are a bit more expensive one pair lasts ages. I get them on Nubounsom.com.

Ardell Wispies: I wear these everyday for work. They’re natural and fluffy and I get so many people asking if they’re my own lashes or extensions. I loaded up on them at The Beauty Show because they’re extremely hard to find. Sometimes you can find them in Pennys if you’re lucky.

So that’s it for this week! I hope you all enjoyed my current mascara & lash favourites. Have a great weekend and I’ll be back here next week with more beauty related goodness! Pound garlic to a paste with sea salt using a mortar and pestle (or mince and mash with a heavy knife) and stir together with rosemary and pepper. Put lamb in a lightly oiled roasting pan, then rub paste all over lamb. Let stand at room temperature 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 180 Roast lamb in middle of oven until a thermometer inserted 2 inches into thickest part of meat (do not touch bone) registers 70c, 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 hours. Transfer to a cutting board and let stand 15 to 25 minutes (internal temperature will rise to about 74c for medium-rare). Add wine to pan and deglaze by boiling over moderately high heat, stirring and scraping up brown bits, 1 minute. Season pan juices with salt and pepper and serve with lamb.

3.

Position 1 rack in top third and 1 rack in bottom third of oven and preheat to 175°. . Toss potatoes with 1/2 cup olive oil in large bowl. Sprinkle generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Spread potatoes in single layer on baking sheets, dividing equally. Roast 30 minutes. Meanwhile, whisk extra-virgin olive oil, lemon juice, dill, and lemon peel in small bowl to blend for dressing. Toss garlic and 2 tablespoons dressing in another small bowl. Divide garlic mixture between baking sheets with potatoes and toss; reverse baking sheets and continue to roast until potatoes are tender and brown around edges, about 15 minutes longer. Toss roasted potatoes in large bowl with enough of remaining dressing to coat and serve. Recipes by

AROMATHERAPY AND ITS USES

The term AROMATHERAPY was coined in the 1920’s to describe the use of essential oils for therapeutic purposes. In a nutshell aromatherapy means “ a therapy using aromas”. The aromas come from the plant kingdom - flowers, trees, herbs and bushes. Essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be diluted before applying to the skin. Essential oils have many uses and our sense of smell, being linked to our emotions, plays the largest part in recognizing the power of aromatherapy and certain essential oils can help with various health and wellbeing issues. Essential oils are often used to promote well being on different levels – physical, mental and emotional. There are several ways of using essential oils all of them very pleasant, these include massage, bathing, compress and inhalation (never use them orally). Proper use of the oils helps to promote a more balanced lifestyle. They may also prevent you from succumbing to everyday illness and effects of stress. A balanced state of mind promotes vitality and better ability to cope with difficult events. Use of aromatherapy can also help to stimulate the immune system avoiding the “run down” feeling that can lead to cold and flu.

Using oil burners Ensure the water is boiling and then add a few drops of your favourite oil to the water

Some of the more common everyday health issues where aromatherapy can help include: Mental Fatigue: BASIL OIL stimulates the brain and is fantastic to refresh your mental powers during a demanding day. During exams or for anybody who needs to concentrate for long periods of time. Because oil of basil is so strong, simply using one or two drops of this oil on a tissue is sufficient to refresh brain matter; may also be added to hot water in an oil burner for use at home or in the office. Insomnia: LAVENDER for anyone experiencing insomnia, if possible take a bath about one hour before bedtime and add 4 to 5 drops of lavender oil. No washing or scrubbing...this bath is purely for rest and relaxation. Stay as long as you feel comfortable adding more hot water if necessary. After leaving the bath, put 1 to 2 drops of NEROLI oil on the edge of your pillow or on a tissue and place it where you can breathe in the vapours. An even more powerful sedative oil is MARJORAM, although the smell isn’t as pleasant as Lavender or Neroli, but it will invariably ensure a good nights’ sleep. Off Days: CLARY SAGE is great for anyone who is subject to “Off Days” when the slightest thing can turn you into a nervous wreck, may benefit from this oil. When you are feeling low it helps you to take control of your emotions. It is also known as a euphoric oil. Emotional Balancing: GERANIUM oil is very beneficial for balancing extremes, whether it’s on a physical or emotional level. Great for the bath or for use in the burner. HGHLY RECHIOMMENDED: PATCHOULI oil, one of the more versatile and celebrated oils, works great where there may be negative feelings such as anxiety, anger and even sadness. Pop a few drops in your oil burner to release its therapeutic properties. The strong, sweet, spicy, musky aroma of this oil also works great as a natural deodorant, just dilute a few drops in a small spray bottle with water. As always we are instore to disucuss and advise you on the full range of essential oils and which ones may suit your requirements best, just call in.

Until next time, stay healthy.

A man takes his Rottweiler to the vet and asks, “my dog’s cross-eyed... is there anything you can do for him?” “Well,” says the vet, “let’s have a look at him” So, he picks the dog up and examines his eyes, then teeth. Finally, he says “I’m going to have to put him down.” “Why? Because he’s cross-eyed?” “No, because he’s really heavy.”

GET OUT REVIEW Director: Jordan Peele Starring: Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Catherine Keener, Bradford Whitely Get Out is the horror/dark comedy from first time director Jordan Peele which follows the story of Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) an African-American visiting his white girlfriend Rose’s (Allison Williams) parents. When he arrives there he realises that something suspicious is happening at their mysterious estate. Walking into the cinema to see Get Out, I was a little sceptical as I am not the biggest fan of horror. Yet walking out, I was blown away by just how much I enjoyed the film. The film doesn’t just rely on jump-scares like a lot of mediocre horror films do. This movie’s scares really rely on the tension of the uncomfortable positions that our protagonist Chris finds himself in. The film boasts a wicked sense of humour which gives a nice break in between the scares too. The film also has some social commentary that looms large throughout the film. Race relations are brought up a lot in the movie. Jordan Peele’s debut is an amazing first feature. He perfectly captures the tension a horror movie should have. Jordan’s past work has been in comedy and it shows in the scenes with Chris’s friend Rod (LilRel Howery). His perception of racism is clearly in the film but he doesn’t hit you over the head with it. The main cast is a joy to watch on screen especially Daniel Kaluuya and Allison Williams as their fear and anger is very believable and keeps the film grounded.Overall the film is highly enjoyable and has become one of the best films I’ve seen all year so far. Mr. Movies Fact: Jordan Peele was inspired to write this movie by Eddie Murphy. During a stand-up comedy show, Murphy talked about going to meet a Caucasian girlfriend's parents.

TORQUING CARS! UK DIESEL CAR DRIVERS MAY SOON BE PENALISED!

Drivers of UK diesel cars could soon be hit by a new fee of up to £20 a day, it was reported this week Plans for a so-called ‘toxin tax’ will be unveiled this week by UK Environment Secretary Andrea Leadsom to crack down on air pollution, according to the Sunday Times. It reports around 35 UK towns and cities will have bans on diesel cars and commercial vehicles, daily charges on them entering the busiest areas, or a mixture of the two. Up to 10 million cars in Great Britain could be affected in cities including Leeds, Southampton, Nottingham and Derby, it is reported. Councils in each area would consult on the details, and newer diesel cars would reportedly be excluded. A source said the Department for Environment, Food and Rurul affairs (Defra) “did not recognise” the figures in the Sunday Times story, but plans will be announced “in due course”. London mayor Sadiq Khan has already announced the most polluting vehicles will have to pay a “toxicity charge” to enter the capital. It follows repeated calls for a scrappage scheme to phase out polluting diesel vehicles. This led to fears of tax hikes for diesel cars in the Autumn Budget. Transport Secretary Chris Grayling also signalled a crackdown by warning people should think long and hard before buying a diesel car. Asked whether motorists should hesitate before buying a diesel, Mr Grayling said: “People should take a long, hard think about what they need, about where they’re going to be driving, and should make best endeavours to buy the least polluting vehicle they can. “I don’t think diesel is going to disappear but someone who is buying a car to drive around a busy city may think about buying a low-emission vehicle rather than a diesel.”

CAR ADVICE WITH HONEST JOHN (DAILY TELEGRAPH)

If your car has developed a fault, turn to Honest John by emailing honestadvice@telegraph.co.uk

CARRY ON CABBY

My daughter is driving her third Toyota Prius and has always leased her cars. She feels inclined to buy when it is three years old and keep it for as long again. What pitfalls await her? AG HJ; If she can buy it for sensible money, it could prove to be a good decision. Taxi drivers have now caught on to the fact that the Prius is ultra-reliable and cheap to maintain. Even if she keeps it for another three years there is a ready market out there, but that might make it too expensive to buy from the leasing company.

SEVEN-YEAR ITCH

I drive about 5,000 miles a year in my seven-year-old Skoda Yeti TDI CR110 4x4. I wish to change to a similarly compact petrol 4x4, but the Yeti TSI 4x4 is too expensive. What are the alternatives? WG HJ ; I’d suggest the Dacia Duster 1.2 TCE 125 4x4 (£14,895) or a Suzuki Vitara S 1.4 Boosterjet 4x4 (about £21,000).

ALL CHANGE

I recently replaced the front tyres of my 2014 BMW X1 X-Drive. The garage advised me that I should change the rears as well, even though they are well within the legal limit. They said that failure to do so could wreck the X-Drive, involving a £11,000 repair. Is this correct? RW HJ ....Yes. A disparity between tyre types and rolling circumference will upset the X-Drive centre diff and cause excess wear because it will think the disparity is due to slippage and will continually engage all-wheel drive. It’s the same with all similar AWD systems. The way around it is to swap tyres front to back (same side) halfway through their lives. but it is a problem if the tyres are half worn and you get an irreparable puncture in one of them. 42

TALKING SPORT WITH THE TRALEE ADVERTISER

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR GREAT WIN FOR KERRY BUT WEEK END’S ON SAD NOTE: The fickleness of sport was certainly proved by the latter stages of the Allianz Football League with Kerry 6th in Division 1 going into the last round of games and the following weekend winning the League. It proved that every score was valuable during the League and that even when a team is playing bad got to keep going till the end. Kerry certainly had a mixed League with some great performances and some less than perfect ones. But that will have suited Eamonn Fitzmaurice and the management team as it gives them plenty to work on in the build-up to the Championship. Looking at the stats from the League Kerry used 33 different players and this is also a huge positive for Kerry. Looking quickly at the final as all the plaudits that Kerry deserve have been written. The team going in against Dublin included a number of players who you could say had ‘no respect’ for Dublin. This is not meant in a disparaging way but it means that they had not suffered those defeats against Dublin over the last few seasons and just went for it. Players like Ronan Shanahan, Jack Barry and Jack Savage gelled perfectly with some of the more experienced players. One of the advantages that Dublin had over many other counties including Kerry was their strength in depth. Now that Kerry has unearthed a number of new players who have gained great experienced from the League and still have players to come back from Dr Crokes and the u21’s plus a few injuries means there will be a huge scramble for places. But more importantly there will be a number of players on the bench straining to get on and who will certainly not weaken the team when they do. While all managers play down a win in the League and Eamonn Fitzmaurice was no different you can be sure that behind the scenes there was a huge sense of achievement and satisfaction in winning the League, beating Dublin and also preventing them a 5-in-a-row. It certainly all bodes well for a big summer ahead for Kerry GAA fans and without wishing away the year

46

thoughts are already gone forward to August and September. Minors: The Kerry minors will have opened their Munster and All Ireland defence by the time you are reading this and we are all hoping that they will have come through with a win. With the success of the Kerry minors over recent years and that of The Sem and Dingle in the college Kerry have a very strong panel. This will be a minor competition that more than ever counties will want to win as it’s the last time the competition is at u18 level. From 2018 on it will be at u17’s – one wonders is that to go directly into competition with the League of Ireland u17’s competition but that’s a debate for another day. For now we are all behind the minors and all involved with the squad. U21’s: The Kerry u21’s will be looking to get the monkey of an eight year gap without success off thei backs as they take on Galway in their All Ireland semi-final. The game is on in Ennis at 4.30pm on Saturday and Jack O’Connor and his squad will be looking to secure a berth in the decider on April 29th. HURLER’S READY FOR ROUND ROBIN: The Kerry hurlers will have put their heartbreaking loss to Laois behind them as they look forwards to meeting Meath in Round 1 of the Leinster Senior Championship round robin series. Kerry are away in this game in Pairc Tailteann in Navan on Sunday April 23rd at 3pm. They are away again the following week as they go to Mullingar to play Westmeath. Hopefully for all Kerry hurling fans the side will be in with a chance of making the top two when they face Laois (again!) in Austin Stacks Park on Sunday May 14th which is a huge game and should hopefully draw a huge crowd. The Kerry u17’s are set to take part in the Celtic Challenge starting on May 3rd and Kerry are in with Clare South/East, North Cork, West Limerick, Limerick City and West Cork. COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DRAWS:

Friday 14th April 2017

The draws for the various County Championships have taken place and the Tralee sides have come out of the hat as follows: In the Garvey’s Supervalu County Senior Championship Austin Stacks are at home to St Kieran and Kerins O’Rahilly’s take on South Kerry. In the Intermediate Club Championship John Mitchels are away to Ardfert this Sunday while in the Junior Premier Club Championship St Pat’s are away to Skellig Rangers this Saturday while on Sunday it is Na Gaeil against Beaufort at 3pm. THE PASSING OF VINCENT: There are so many Kerry people who devote their life to their sport. Some do it on the field and some in the background. Kerry sport lost one of those who was happy to be in the ‘background’ but whose contribution to the GAA is immeasurable. Vincent Linnane will forever be remembered at the caretaker of Austin Stacks Park as well as kitman for the Kerry senior team. He was in Croke Park last Sunday and what a game he had on his last trip to headquarters. Recently Eamonn Fitzmaurice gave him the honour of presenting the players with their jerseys as he was in the manager’s words “the heart and soul of Austin Stacks Park and a huge part of our set-up. We are all shocked and saddened with the news of his passing.” While he was involved with the senior team he also took huge pleasure and pride in every Kerry side that lined out in Austin Stack’s Park and as the Kerry GAA statement said he transcended age groups and he was loved by all players and all managers alike. May the Sod of the Big Stadium in the Sky Rest Gently on his Soul. TRALEE BOXING CLUB PATRICK’S THE CHAMP: Tralee Boxing Club’s Patrick McCarthy is an All-Ireland Champion. The young fighter showed huge determination and skill to become Kerry’s only Champion of 2017. Patrick was very unlucky over his young career coming up against top opponents and nearly always a close second, but since the 2017 season started

Patrick was a man on a mission. He put in a huge training effort and worked over Christmas and St Patrick’s day and he has now got his just reward. All the pounding of the bag, the running of the roads and the sparing saw him defeat Keeyan Roche from St Aidan’s BC in the Boy 4 48kg final. Patrick is now called in to train with the Irish High Performance Team which will improve his boxing skills and hopefully he will make the Irish Team in the near future. Patrick would like to thank his coaches Tommy, Noel, Donie, his many sparing partners and those who supported him achieve his dream. TRAE’S AN ALL STAR: Following a hugely successful first season for Garvey’s Tralee Warriors which ended with their Champions Cup win they are now celebrating another huge highlight.. Five players in each of the four divisions have been awarded All Star’s and a Player of the Year for each Division has also been named. The All Stars have been voted on by the National League coaches and it’s Trae Pemberton who has scooped his first All Star here in Ireland. And there was double delight for the Garvey’s Tralee Warriors guard as he was voted as the Player of the Year. These are certainly well deserved accolades for the player and the club and we all congratulate Trae and all at the Warriors. ST BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL SUCCESS: St Brendan’s are celebrating success in the Men’s Division 1 Cup as they defeated KCYMS 81-66 to end the season on a high. The game took place in Castleisland on Friday night with both sides featuring players who had enjoyed success in Letterkenny the previous week with the Warriors and Keane’s Supervalu. The game started brightly and after an exciting first quarter St Brendan’s led 20-17. But it was in the second quarter that the Tralee side pulled away as they out-scored their opponents 2610 to lead by 19 at the break. KCYMS made a big effort in the third quarter but St Brendan’s were the better on the day even if the gap was closed to ten points with 2 minutes left. It was the St Brendan’s defence that saw out the game and they took the win 81-66 to lift the Cup. Cathal O’Sullivan top scored with 27 points followed by Fergal O’Sullivan on 23 and Paul McMahon on 17. ST BRENDAN’S EASTER CAMP: St. Brendan’s will be running a basketball camp from Tuesday 17th to Friday 21st April. There will be two separate sessions each day – from 10.00am to 12.30pm for 5 to 9 year olds and from 1.30pm to 4.00pm for 10-15 year olds. The camp will take place at Moyderwell Gym and the cost per player is 30

GOOD POINT BUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN 3 FOR KERRY U17’S: Kerry DL u17’s have their first point in the u17 Airtricity League after a very positive 1-1 draw away to UCD in the AUL. This was a far better performance by the Kerry squad after two defeats in their opening games. They deservedly took the lead when Dillon Robinson, who was a constant threat to the students defence, got onto a through ball and beat the last defender and the Kerry in the 17th minute to put Kerry ahead. UCD did hit the post and Kerry keeper Robert Osbourne made two good saves but the visitors also went close through Martin Couglan and Kevin Williams. The equaliser came in the 83rd minute when the referee blew for a ‘soft’ free kick. However his linesman pointed out that what he blew for was actually inside the box and he then pointed to the spot. However the Kerry management team of Darren Aherne, Tony O’Neill and Tim Collins will be very happy with the overall 90 minutes from the squad and will take the point as a great platform to progress from. GREAT FRIDAY AT THE TRACK: The Kingdom Greyhound Stadium is looking forward to a ‘Great Friday’ this Good Friday as the track is open with full bar and restaurant facilities. The card on Friday night features the final of the O’Neills Dog Food Mini Open A0 525, where all the finalists receive a free bag of O’Neills Dog Food. On Saturday morning racing continues with the 8 race SIS program with the first race off at 9.11am while later that night it’s a fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Kerry plus the final of the KGOBA A9 sweep. Entries are still being taken for the Lee Strand 550 for 72 confined A3 greyhounds which begins on Friday, April 21st. ST BRENDAN’S / OAKPARK COMMUNITY GAMES NEWS: The u10 soccer team took part in the County finals last Sunday in Milltown and while this is a young side their skill’s belied this. While they did not qualify they put up some very good performances against some very good sides. The squad was Nikita Hoare,

Ryan Sheehy, Fionn O’Dalaigh, Padraig Daly, Elliot Maher and Sean Cantwell. Coach Pat Daly and his trainers did a great job with the squad. Gaelic Football: This competition takes place on June 5th in a mixed team format. Training will commence next week. Athletics: The local athletics evening will be held on May 10th in Na Gael. This event takes a lot of organizing so any help will be greatly appreciated. Please contact 087 2474648 or 087 8568887. CAMOGIE STARS STRIKE FOR GLORY: It is turning out to be a memorable season for the Kerry minor camogie girls and they have continued their success by winning the semi-final of the All Ireland u18 Strike for Glory Championship. The defeated Mayo, in Clare, and were in control from early on leading 2-10 to 1-01 at half time. Mayo had the wind at their backs and hit a purple patch and closed the gap to 2-11 to 2-06 but Kerry hit back and hit 3-01 in the closing stages to win easily on a 4-14 to 2-08 score-line. Aoife O’Connell certainly played a Captain’s part hitting 2-04. Kerry will now play Wicklow in the All Ireland final on Saturday, April 22nd. The Kerry seniors will play Roscommon in the semi-final of the Littlewoods National League with the time and venue still to be announced. Gold Masters Results: Kerry camogie thanks all those who supported their 2017 Golf Masters fundraiser and the winner was Elaine Twomey with Marie Finnegan 2nd and Edel O’Connor, Bertie O’Brien and Mark Walshe sharing 3rd place. TRALEE PARNELL’S NEWS: Fifth and Sixth Class Blitz: Thanks to South Kerry GDA David O Dea for organising a fifth and sixth class blitz in the IT Thursday the 6th of April. Six schools took part including CBS primary school, Spa National School, Caherleaheen, Scoil Eoin Balloonagh, Moyderwell Mercy Primary School and Blennerville National School. The Postgraduate researcher who gave this interesting and Informative presentation, gave participants up-to-date information on how to appropriately identify, respond to and address concussion injuries in athletes. It also covered the short and long-term health consequences of concussion, the coach’s role in concussion assessment, return-toplay guidelines and how coaches can communicate to their athletes about concussion.

Every Friday at 7 in Caherslee the under 6s joined all other age groups in restarting training. New members are always welcome. BALLYMAC NEWS: In the County League Ballymac defeated St Senan’s 1-19 to 2-13 in Round 3. St Senan’s started the brightest but Ballymac hit a purple patch to lead by 3 points at the break. They then went 7 ahead before 2-01 without reply saw the sides draw level going into the final stages. But Ballymac finished the stronger and 3 unanswered points gave them the win. In the County Minor League it finished Ballymac 2-16 to An Ghaeltacht’s 1-10. This sees the home side into the semi-final that will take place in the coming weeks. Ballymac led 1-08 to 0-03 at the break and were never headed. The u14 Girls had an early start as they travelled to Templenoe to take on Inbhear Sceine Gaels in the first round of Division 2 of the County League. In a tough break for the Ballymac girls Inbhear Sceine Gaels got the winning point with a deflected shot. The u16’s Girls defeated Glenflesk in the County League Division 3 winning 6-04 to 3-04. This was a good performance by the girls to get their campaign off to a winning start. In the Coiste na nOg the u14’s played Kilcummin in Round 2 of their County League Division 1 campaign and got off to a great start leading 2-04 to 0-01 but Kilcummin rallied to train 3-05 to 2-01 at the half. The u12’s will be disappointed with their County League loss to Glenbeigh-Glencar going down 5-14 to 1-05. They are continuing to work hard before their trip to Croke Park in two weeks. The u14’s went down to Templenoe/Sneem/ Derrynane 4-12 to 3-09 with the home side the physically stronger team. They will have played Currow in midweek. 1-07. The Seniors defeated Ardfert 1-10 to 1-13 in Round 3 of the Senior Football League Division 2 taking the points in this fast paced encounter. The sides were level at the break 1-06 apiece and despite a close second half St Pats were worthy winners. There next game is the Junior Premier Club Championship game Round 1 playing Skellig Rangers away this Sunday at 2.30pm. STACK’S NEWS: The u6’s, 8’s and u10’s are in action this Sunday at Caherslee at 11am. They will all be involved in Easter Blitzes. The u12 A’s were involved in a cracking game against Kenmare drawing 5-10 to 5-10! They led going into the final ten minutes of the game but the home side hit two injury time goals to draw level. The Junior Academy are all working hard and have this Sunday off to enjoy their Easter eggs. The u14 Boys defeated Glenbeingh/Glencar/Cromane while the u12 boys A’s and B’s just lost out to Firies. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... KERRY GENERAL HOSPITAL ALREADY PROVIDING FREE PARKING FOR CANCER PATIENTS AS REVIEW TAKES PLACE The Irish Cancer Society has today welcomed the news that the South/South West Hospital Group will review car parking policy for cancer patients across the six hospitals that offer cancer treatment. This comes after the Chief Operating Officer at the South/ South West Hospital Group, Mr. Ger O’Callaghan that the Group would “review what is going on across hospitals”.

and we’re pleased to note their openness to further progress.”

The group includes Kerry General Hospital, where cancer patients already receive free parking.

Meanwhile, the South Infirmary Victoria Hospital (SIVUH) in Cork, has decided to introduce a new reduced daily rate of €5 for cancer patients.

The Irish Cancer Society has been campaigning to ‘Park the Charges’ for cancer patients and said this is an important first step in reducing the excessive financial burden parking charges place on cancer patients. Donal Buggy, Head of Advocacy and Services said: “We were grateful to hear Mr. O’Callaghan’s remarks, and hope this is a positive signal of a wider shift across our health services that recognises the benefits of free or subsidised parking charges for cancer patients. The South/South West Group has exhibited very good practice when it comes to parking for cancer patients,

Of the six hospitals in the South/South West Hospital Group that offer cancer treatment and have a hospital on-site, only Waterford Hospital doesn’t provide free parking or concessions for cancer patients. At Kerry General Hospital cancer patients receive free parking.

Mr. Buggy said: “This is really welcome news and we’re pleased that hospital management at SIVUH are listening to the needs of cancer patients by choosing to reduce charges. This is a good example of the compassion required at hospitals right across the country, and means that cancer patients having treatment in Cork won’t have to pay more than €5 a day for parking.” Currently, Cork University Hospital are one of only two designated cancer centres that offer free or reduced parking

for cancer patients at €5 a day. Following strong public support, with over 3,000 signatures to the Irish Cancer Society’s online petition calling on hospitals to ‘Park the Charges’ and the support of a number of Councillors across both Cork County and City Councils, where a motion calling on SIVUH to lower its charges for cancer patients recently passed with unanimous support, SIVUH have moved to reduce its charges.

see politicians of all shades coming together to support a policy that will make a real difference in the day-to-day lives of cancer patients, and we’re very grateful of their continued support”. The Irish Cancer Society has said it will continue to campaign in communities across the country to reduce the financial burden of cancer. For more information on the Irish Cancer Society’s ‘Park the Charges’ campaign visit www.cancer.ie/parkthecharges

Mr. Buggy welcomed the support of local politicians in Cork and praised the Cross-Party support for the motion. “It’s very positive to
