Keep your Business in Tralee and keep Tralee in Business!

End of an Era as John Griffin Retires Warm tributes have been paid to John Griffin, County Tourism Officer with Kerry County Council who is retiring after 40 years service to Tralee Town Council and Kerry County Council. A large crowd attended his retirement function in Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre at the weekend. John has been associated with the development of some of the county’s most iconic visitor attractions including Blennerville Windmill and Steam Railway, the restoration of Ardfert Cathedral, Kerry County Museum and Geraldine Experience, the Jeanie Johnston Famine Ship Project, Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre, Tralee Rose Memorial and Rose Wall, Dominican and Kerry GAA Memorial, Kerry Dark Skies and most recently the Valentia Transatlantic Cable Project. He was director of The Gathering in Kerry and worked on the roll-out of the Wild Atlantic Way. He built up influential partnerships for Tralee and Kerry with Frankfurt in Germany and was secretary of the ‘Towards of the Better Tralee’ Tidy Towns Group which helped bring Tralee from a bronze medal in 2003 in Tidy Towns to a succession of gold medals in the competition over a decade later and a double gold medal in the European Entente Florale competition. The role he played in bringing astronaut Neil Armstrong and Sir Edmund Hillary to Tralee was also recalled by speakers which included

Minister Norma Foley, Moira Murrell, Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, Mayor of Tralee, Cllr. Johnnie Wall, Mayor of Tralee, Declan Murphy, Manager, Failte Ireland, and John’s close friend the current Mayor of Kerry, Cllr. Jim Finunace. Mike Scannell, former Tralee Town Clerk, acted as MC. Minister Norma Foley and Council Chief Executive, Moira Murrell, described John’s strong work ethic and his ability of extracting funding for Kerry projects from public and private sources. They mentioned his vision, range of contacts in Government departments and among the diaspora in the USA. Declan Murphy of Failte Ireland described his enthusiasm and commitment to all things Kerry and his partnership with Failte Ireland on a range of projects including The Gathering and Wild Atlantic Way. Mayor Johnnie Wall and Mayor Jim Finucane recalled some funny experiences with John where he cut things tight on promotional trips abroad but could again access to mayors and governors offices. John expressed his sincere thanks to his council colleagues and public representatives, whom, he said, he held in the highest esteem for their dedication and hard work for their communities which was often unseen and unheralded. He said that he was only one member of the teams who delivered the innovative projects and thanked his

colleagues and managers for their support, particularly Moira Murrell and her predecessor, Tom Curran for giving him the flexibility to it. He also remembered his mentors the late Tralee Town Clerk Sean Crispie, Town Engineer, Paddy Scanlan, County Manager Tom Collins and the late Joe Dunne of FAS. He thanked members of the Tralee and wider Kerry Tourism industry and friends for their kind words and support and patience with him over the years. He had special words of praise for the communities of Ardfert, Blennerville and Valentia, who he had worked closely with. They appreciated the

valuable heritage they had inherited and sought to conserve it and use it to generate economic and social benefits for their areas. He was joined at the event by his wife Therese, whom he described as his “rock”, and his son Sean who is based in London. There were also warm words for his 101 year old mother Nell who lives in Moyderwell and son Michael who resides in Melbourne. John plans to continue to have an interest in community initiatives on a voluntary basis. One of those present described it as “the end of an era”.

“Our World Our Oyster” Art Exhibition in Fenit Tralee Art Group is delighted to announce the opening of their upcoming exhibition on Friday October 20th at the Parish Centre, Fenit V92Y8DW. “Our World, Our Oyster” celebrates Oyster Fishing in Tralee Bay, Fenit. Many fishermen and women from Fenit and surrounding areas take part in this seasonal oyster fishery, generally from October to December. It is closely regulated to ensure future sustainability. “Becoming more aware of the Flat Bed Oyster (also known as the Native Irish Oyster) and this local community industry, has helped us learn more about a traditional, sustainable and important industry on our doorstep and has been an inspiration to TAG members”says

Ber Earley . Guided by well known, local artist, Rebekah Wall, members have developed a body of work including installations, paintings, video, textiles etc. Children from the local St Brendan’s National School worked with some TAG members and, in response, created their own collaborative piece which will also be on display. Come along and enjoy this wonderful, enlightening and fun evening. There will be refreshments and music by local musicians. The exhibition Opening is on Friday, Oct 20th in the Parish Hall, Fenit, V92 Y8DW.The exhibition will be open daily from 2-4pm until Sunday Nov 5th.

Chamber praises Tralee Tidy Towns in achieving another Gold medal! “Tralee Chamber is delighted to offer its congratulations to @traleetidytowns for their remarkable

achievement in securing yet another well-deserved Gold medal and an impressive increase in points. We are incredibly fortunate to have an exceptional team of dedicated volunteers, expertly led by Chairperson Brendan O’Brien. Their unwavering commitment to maintaining the cleanliness of our town, along with their remarkable contributions to essential projects like murals, marram planting, extensive cleanups, and planting initiatives, is truly commendable. These tireless efforts not only elevate the visual charm of Tralee but also strengthen our ties with local businesses, exemplifying the extraordinary sense of community and collaborative spirit that flourishes here. In unity, we find strength.”

Family Fun Fairday.

The Castlemaine Fair Day, in loving memory of John O’Donoghue, is scheduled for Sunday, October 15th, 2023. The event aims to raise funds for The Palliative Care Unit at University Hospital Kerry (UHK), which plays a vital role in Kerry’s healthcare. Recent developments, such as the proposed expansion of The Kerry Hospice and the establishment of a palliative care base in Killarney, underline the urgency of fundraising to combat the pervasive impact of cancer and terminal illnesses in our communities.

In 2021, the Fair Day was successfully revived, with the support of the farming community and the residents of Castlemaine and its surroundings, raising an impressive €59,660 for Palliative Care. John O’Donoghue, in whose memory the event is held, used to describe this service as “bad to want but great to have.”

8

Friday 13th October 2023

The exceptional care, skill, empathy, and expertise of the professionals at The Palliative Care Unit are cherished by John’s family. This year’s Fair Day promises to be a fun-filled occasion, featuring an amusement fun fair, children’s entertainment from local clubs, live music, a live auction, and a pet show. The event serves as a fitting tribute to John, who was deeply involved in the farming community and had a lifelong love for fairs. The community’s support and the dedication of the Castlemaine Events Committee make this event possible. It’s not only a way to honour John’s memory but also a means of giving back to the community and expressing gratitude for their generosity.

READ LAURE & STEPH'S JOURNEY ON THIS FOCUS COURSE

“ Laure says:

Discovering the Focus course at the National Learning Network in Tralee was a transformative moment in my life, thanks to the insightful suggestion of RO Nora. Initially, I hadn't considered it, as I was completing another course and struggling with low confidence, uncertain about my future. However, after meeting Geoff and conversing with Focus course alumni, I decided to take the leap. My first day was nerve-wracking, leading me to arrive late—a rarity for me. I had to muster the courage to enter that classroom, setting the stage for a whirlwind of meeting new faces and preparing for the journey ahead. Looking back, this challenging path stands as one of the best decisions I've ever made, even though it's been about three years since I completed the course. The Focus course empowered me in numerous ways: 1. Self-Discovery: Before embarking on this journey, I believed I knew myself, but it was during the course that I truly examined who I am and what I desire. I had spent my life conforming to others' expectations, but the course helped me find my voice and establish healthy boundaries. 2. Unique Experiences: The course provided opportunities to explore places I wouldn't have ventured to alone, such as Blackrock Observatory and St. John's Castle. 3. Overcoming Challenges: Even when the world faced a pandemic, the support of the Focus group, both online and offline, helped me navigate the uncertainty. It equipped me with tools to reemerge into a changed world. While there's much more to share about the Focus course, I encourage you to experience it firsthand. I am living proof that this course can change lives, and I am immensely grateful for the journey and the people who shared it with me. The lessons I learned continue to guide me daily. If you're feeling stuck and aspire to transform your life, I wholeheartedly recommend the Focus course. Approach it with an open mind, give your best, and extend kindness to yourself and others. It's a journey worth taking.

Steph says: This FOCUS course opened up so many doors for me that i didn't think possible ! It helped me find friends that I will never forget . And equipped me with life skills in so many areas . Yes, the year was challenging , but also fun & relaxed. I am now in full employment and use the skills I learned daily for my mental health"

DENTAL CORNER is association with

Dental Benefits Under the PRSI Scheme and the Importance of Regular Dental Hygiene Visits Maintaining good oral health is essential for our overall well-being, and the PRSI (Pay Related Social Insurance) scheme in many countries recognizes this by providing dental benefits to eligible individuals.

Ryles Pharmacy Team are ‘ Gobsmacked’! The hard working team at Ryles Pharmacy have been selected as finalists in the 2023 Irish Family Business Awards. “ This is such a huge honour for us, and a wonderful recognition of the hard work of our team” 💕says Mike Ryle “A huge thanks to the fabulous lady who put us forward for this very touching accolade. We have made finalists in both ‘Best in Customer Services’ and ‘Pharmacy Family Business of the Year’ categories which is just overwhelming to us.Roll on the finals on Nov 3rd in Dublin “ ...Tralee is rooting for you guys !

Strive Fitness Company held an Official Opening Day

In Ireland ,both employees and self employed individuals may be able to access these benefits depending on their tax contributions. If eligible , you can avail of this scheme once per calender year. If you do not avail of treatment within the year , it does not automatically carry over to the next year. Individuals who qualify can receive help with the cost of routine dental check-ups, cleanings, and X-rays. This assistance plays a significant role in promoting preventive care, as it encourages people to visit their dentists regularly. These routine visits are essential for a number of reasons: 1. Preventing Dental Issues: Regular dental check-ups can detect dental issues in their early stages. Early intervention can prevent problems from worsening, ultimately saving patients from more extensive, costly, and painful treatments down the line. 2. Maintaining Oral Hygiene: Dental cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup, preventing gum disease and cavities. Maintaining oral hygiene not only saves teeth but also enhances one's overall health, as oral health is closely linked to cardiovascular health and other systemic issues. 3. Preserving Confidence: A healthy, attractive smile boosts confidence and self-esteem. Regular dental visits help maintain a bright, appealing smile, which can positively impact an individual's personal and professional life. 4. Long-Term Cost Savings: Preventive dental care costs less than treating advanced dental issues. Utilizing PRSI benefits for routine care can save individuals money in the long run.

In conclusion, the dental benefits provided under the PRSI scheme serve as a crucial step towards ensuring everyone has access to quality dental care. By taking advantage of these benefits and attending regular dental hygiene visits, individuals can protect their oral health, prevent dental problems, and maintain a confident, vibrant smile while saving money on long-term dental expenses. Prioritizing oral health through the PRSI scheme and regular dental visits is an investment in overall well-being and quality of life. It is recommended to visit your dentist every 6 months or sooner if diagnosed with active gum disease.
