LEGAL MATTERS CORNER MIRIAM MC GILLICUDDY ANSWERS YOUR LEGAL QUERIES

William and his wife Mary are expecting a baby in January 2017 and William is wondering what type of paternity and other leave will be available to him. The Paternity Leave and Benefit Act 2016 commences 1/9/2016. It provides statutory paternity leave and benefit for fathers and aims to bring Ireland into line with many other EU countries. The leave is intended to encourage and promote a more equal division of parental responsibilities in the workplace. There is discussion about another two weeks parental leave being made available in the next budget. The parent availing of the leave will be entitled to two continuous weeks’ paid leave in respect of births from September 2016 so William should be able to avail of this leave. He will be paid by social welfare at a rate of €230 per week, subject him having the appropriate PRSI contributions. This is the equivalent of maternity benefit rate at present. Employers can top up paternity benefit if they so wish voluntarily as is done by many employers in relation to maternity benefit at present. If employers already provide this top-up for female employees they may have to provide it for paternity leave to ensure compliance with equality law. The leave is available to all fathers, including self-employed, same sex couples and those adopting. The definition of “relevant parent” is defined as the father of the child, the spouse, civil partner or cohabitant of the mother. In most family circumstances it will be the father. The leave can be taken at any time in the 26 weeks’ following the birth of the child (or placement in the case of adoption). 4 weeks’ notice is required before the leave may be taken however there is provision for shorter notice. The legislation allows for the postponement of leave in certain circumstances, for example sickness of a relevant parent and/or hospitalisation of the child. The legislation contains protections from penalisation for taking paternity leave and preservation of employment rights while on paternity leave. An employer is obliged to keep a record of the paternity leave of his employees and this needs to be retained for 8 years. If this section is contravened it can result in fines up to €4000. Any dispute regarding paternity leave may be referred to the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) or on appeal to the Labour Court. William is also entitled to paid time off to attend two antenatal classes. This would not apply if he was in the defence forces or gardai. The Parental Leave Act, 1998 (as amended by the Parental Leave (Amendment) Act 2006) entitles each parent to 18 weeks of unpaid parental leave. The leave must be taken before the child is 8 years of age, or 16 years of age in the case of children with disabilities or a long-term illness. The Act also provides for limited paid leave called force majeure leave to enable employees to deal with family emergencies resulting from injury or illness of a family member, up to a maximum of 3 days in any 12 consecutive months or 5 days in any 36 consecutive months. An employee should have one year’s continuous service to take this leave but if less than that they may get the leave pro-rata to time worked.

JESSICA WINS €1500 CAR INSURANCE FROM GMHD

According to Denis Murphy , Director at Gallivan Murphy Hooper Dolan Insurance brokers in Killarney ...”As the cost of motor insurance continues to rise at an alarming rate, we decided to run a competition to give one lucky young driver free insurance to the value of €1500. Young drivers are often the worst-affected when it comes to rising premiums so we thought it was about time someone gave them a break. The competition itself was run through our website, GMHD.ie, and every driver aged 17-24 who took out a policy with us between July 7th and September 30th was automatically entered into the draw. Six random entrants were picked out and the overall winner was decided by a roll of a die. Jessica Ryle from Tralee was the lucky winner and she was delighted to walk away with €1500 worth of car insurance. As always we’re 100% committed to giving the very best service to our customers. Our experienced team have market knowledge which is second to none and will always strive to find the best policy and price for our clients. We cater for all insurance needs, big or small. Drop in, give us a call or visit GMHD.ie today. With our easy online application process you can get a Quick Quote in just 60 seconds, and we compare over twenty insurers to make sure you get the best deal on the market. And don’t forget to follow us on Facebook to find out about our latest news, deals and competitions. Once again , Well done Jessica “

WELL-KNOWN FORMER KERRYMAN EDITOR APPOINTED ADJUNCT PROFESSOR OF JOURNALISM AT UL University of Limerick has appointed former editor and Managing Director of The Kerryman & more recently The Irish Daily Star, Ger Colleran as Adjunct Professor of Journalism. Mr Colleran will give master classes to UL’s Journalism and New Media students as part of his new role.“The one thing young student journalists need to set aside is the cloud of fear that has hit the media industry over the past 10-15 years because of the massive disruption caused by digital. Technology is merely a delivery vehicle; the basic human demand for stories doesn’t change at all,” he said. 6

My laptop is only two years old but its gone very slow. How can I speed it up? There aren't many more frustrating things than a slow Laptop. Spending minutes at a time waiting for your laptop or all-in-one to load up a simple web page or Microsoft Office program can make even a sane person want to throw their PC in the bin. The speed of a laptop depends on what hardware you have, the processor type or amount of ram. But no matter how much ram you have this will not improve the time it takes windows take to load. I suppose the best way to explain the RAM is to compare it to the size of the table you usually sit at. A Larger table means more books can be opened simultaneously so the more ram you have the more programs you can use at one time quickly. I have found that the best results can be achieved by upgrading the hard drive to a solid-state drive which loads windows in about one minute on average. I cannot get any Saorview reception where I live and I don’t want to install Sky. What are my options? If you can get fibre broadband you could try Vodafone or Eir TV but if this is not available to you could install a Saorsat Dish which would give you RTE and TG4 but TV 3, 3e, and UTV are not available on Saorsat at the moment. The installation would require a large dish 1.1M and a HD Satellite receiver. This can also give you other free to air channels by installing a another smaller dish . WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE... JOHN GETS SNAPPED AT HIS BOOK SIGNING IN O ‘MAHONEYS

John Clearly on the other side of the lens for a change , as he signs his new book “Through the Lens “ last weekend in O ‘Mahoneys Bookshop. John says “ I would like to thank all those who supported me , both here today in O ‘Mahoneys and last week in the Grand Hotel ...I have seen many old faces and friends once again and indeed many new faces too . I hope my look at life in Tralee and Kerry in the 1970’s and 1980’s brings back a few memories and puts a smile on peoples faces “

TRALEE CHAMBER ALLIANCE THINK IN IDENTIFIES STRENGTHS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR A POSITIVE FUTURE TRALEE has a bright future with a more viable strengths and opportunities than ever before to build on, according to the findings of the 2016 Tralee Chamber Alliance Think In held at Ballygarry House Hotel and Spa. Five key action areas were identified by the 38 positive-minded representatives of all professional sectors in Tralee who participated in the Think In which was facilitated by Caroline McEnery of The HR Suite. Over the coming weeks, a number of teams will be established to develop strategies to: • Attract Business and Investment to Kerry’s Capital Town • Build Tourism Potential • Achieve Purple Flag Status for Tralee • Improve Communication and Stakeholder Engagement • Grow Membership of Tralee Chamber Alliance The President of Tralee Chamber Alliance, John Drummey, said: “Tralee is a great place to live, work and visit. One of the highlights from this Think In, compared to the previous two in 2012 and 2014, was the evident progress that Tralee has made since the establishment of Tralee Chamber Alliance. We need to work together to look forward and shake off the inferiority complex that exists in many quarters. The recent Think In, the upcoming Town Centre Health Check and closer working ties with ITT and Kerry County Council are all key tools necessary to moving forward positively.” The restoration and resumption of the Blennerville Railway, extending town trading times, capitalising on Brexit and generating more positive PR about Tralee were identified as opportunities to bring successful outcomes to Tralee. All participants were unanimous in their view that more businesses in the town should join Tralee Chamber Alliance with a view to building the capability to promote Tralee, at home and further afield, as being open for business and good for business. For more information about Tralee Chamber Alliance, contact Kieran Ruttledge, CEO, on 066 7121472 or email Kieran@Tralee.ie. 14

SPRING TO DELIVER KEYNOTE ADDRESS AT ‘TRALEE 800’ CONFERENCE

This is a two-day conference that will explore the 800 year history of Tralee, Co. Kerry and earlier. The conference will be officially opened in Siamsa Tíre Theatre on Friday evening, November 4th (7.30 pm) by former Tánaiste Dick Spring, who will give the keynote address, and continue in the Rose Hotel on Saturday. The Conference is jointly organised by the Kerry Archaeological & Historical Society (KAHS) and Tralee Municipal District Council and is supported by Kerry County Council. Conference speakers include those who have helped to unlock Tralee’s pre-history like Kerry County Archaeologist, Dr. Michael Connolly, and those who have studied its turbulent medieval history like Dr. Paul MacCotter from UCC, and the industrious 18th and 19th centuries with historians Helen O’Carroll and Vincent O’Mahony. Members of the two families that dominated the history of Tralee - the Fitzgeralds and the Dennys - will also be in attendance with Tom Denny presenting an illustrated lecture on “The Dennys of Tralee” which includes recently discovered photographs of Tralee dating from the 1860s. Town Planner, Victoria McCarthy will trace the physical development of Tralee and Tralee Municipal District Manager, Michael Scannell, will look to the future in the closing address. Local historian, Donal O’Sullivan, will lead a guided tour of Tralee Town Centre on Sunday, November 6th, commencing at the Kerry County Museum, Ashe Memorial Hall, Denny Street at 11.30am.

SKELLIG RING’S LONELY PLANET LISTING A HUGE BOOST KERRY

The CEO at Shannon Airport has stated that Lonely Planet’s inclusion of the Skellig Ring will benefit tourism right across the county and along the Wild Atlantic Way.Welcoming the inclusion by Lonely Planet of the short route in its top ten ‘Best in Travel 2017’ list, CEO at Shannon Group, which operates Shannon Airport, Matthew Thomas, said that it is another huge global signpost for the Wild Atlantic Way. “The Skellig Ring in Kerry is breath-taking and fully deserves to be included in Lonely Planet’s top-ten and the publicity this will bring will be huge for the wider Wild Atlantic Way. This list has global reach given Lonely Planet’s status as one of the ultimate guides for tourists. It would simply have been impossible to buy this level of publicity for our region. “The great thing, however, is that once people begin reading about Skellig Ring, they will quickly find it is a spur off the majestic Ring of Kerry, which, in turn, will bring them to the tourism phenomenon that the Wild Atlantic Way is, with any number of other jaw-dropping locations. “The listing will open eyes across the world to all of the Wild Atlantic Way’s gems. Donegal, Sligo, Mayo, Galway, Clare, Limerick, Kerry and Cork will all benefit from this.“As the natural gateway airport for the Wild-Atlantic Way, bringing people directly into this region from all our key markets, the UK, Europe and US, we will certainly be seeking to capaitalise on this for the region.” 20

Craig and the team answer your queries Q: I’ve never lifted weights before, my friend said it will make me bulky. Is this true? A: Veronika says – Most women still assume weights will make them bulky, this is not true at all. I once thought this myself and I proved myself wrong. Women don’t have the same genetics as men so its almost impossible to build big muscle for a women by accident. Muscles can get stronger and more toned for sure by not necessarily bigger. Resistance Training will also burn more fat in the long run compared to cardio alone. Q: I do 100 sit ups every morning and evening but I still can’t see my abs, whats wrong?

.ie RATHASS, TRALEE, CO. KERRY T: 066 71 20000 E:INFO@KELLIHERS.IE | WWW.KELLIHERS.IE

A: John Fitzgerald says – while direct abs training is great to strengthen the core, that alone is not enough to see a great set of defined abs. Abs are made in the kitchen so the nutrition must be good as well as having medium to low body fat levels. Q: I need to lose body fat in my arms but I don’t want to lose weight anywhere else, should I just train my arms everyday? A: Aaron says – Unfortunately a person cannot spot-reduce body fat so building muscle in the arms will be a good idea but training everyday will become counterproductive as the muscle needs time to recover Q: I walk every night with my friend, we do on average 3 miles. While it worked for a while I’m no longer losing weight like I used to? A: John Halpin says – You are too comfortable so your body needs a different stimulus. Try doing the same distance but running it a little, or increase the distance, even by running for 30 seconds intervals.

IT’S ONLY A JOKE A FAIRY APPEARS IN PHILOSOPHY CLASS

and speaks to the old professor: “For your sustained and deep thinking and you’re inspired teaching I grant you a wish. You may choose between great material wealth, a long and healthy life, or final insight and wisdom.” The professor answers without hesitation: “For a true lover of wisdom there can only be one choice. I choose insight.” The fairy grants it and disappears. After a while one of the students reluctantly breaks the silence and ask: “Sir...tell us, what have you learned..?”. The professor looks up with a dazzled expression and - “I should have taken the damn money”

I CAUGHT MY WIFE CHEATING WITH MY BEST FRIEND.

She was upset that I was always beating her, and he was jealous of how much money and property I had. I was so angry when I caught them that I flipped the game board over and left them to pick up all the pieces.

A PRIEST GOES GOLFING

A priest and a nun are playing golf. The priest tees up and tries to rip it off the first tee. “Damn it I missed”. Nun tells the priest to watch his language. The priest steps up again, big swing and a miss “damn it I missed”. Nun much more seriously says she is going to leave if he keeps it up, god will be angry with you. Priest apologized again. He steps up and completely misses again, “GOD dammit I missed” The clouds well up boom boom, a lightning bolt fries the nun right there, god echoes from the heavens “damn it I missed”

THE ELDERLY ITALIAN MAN WENT TO HIS PARISH PRIEST...

..and asked if the priest would hear his confession. “Of course, my son,” said the priest. “Well, Father, at the beginning of World War Two, a beautiful woman knocked on my door and asked me to hide her from the Germans; I hid her in my attic, and they never found her.” “That’s a wonderful thing, my son, and nothing that you need to confess,” said the priest. “It’s worse, Father; I was weak, and told her that she had to pay for rent of the attic by making love to me every week ,” continued the old man. “Well, it was a very difficult time, and you took a large risk - you would have suffered terribly at their hands if the Germans had found you hiding her; I know that God, in his wisdom and mercy, will balance the good and the evil, and judge you kindly,” said the priest. “Thanks, Father,” said the old man. “That’s a load off of my mind. Can I ask another question?” “Of course, my son,” said the priest. The old man asked, “Do I need to tell her that the war is over?”

CREAMY CHICKEN AND CORN CHOWDER SOUP

APPLE SOUP

while everybody thinks fish when you say chowder it is a style of soup and can be chicken, vegetable etc

2 potatoes (Medium Sized, diced) 1/2 onions (Small, diced) 2 tablespoons butter (divided) 1 teaspoon seasoning (Italian Blend) 1 can cream of chicken soup 1 can cream style corn (if you cant find creamed corn buy a can of corn and blend with some milk) 1 whole kernel corn 3 cans milk (use the empty soup can to measure) milk onions 1/2 chicken (Pulled apart and chopped) salt (/Pepper to taste

METHOD

In a soup or stock pot over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon butter, diced onion, Italian Seasoning and diced potato. Saute until tender (about 5 minutes). Let the chowder cook on medium, stirring occasionally for about 10 minutes. Reduce to low and simmer for another 5 minutes or until ready to serve

FITNESS!

HELLO MY STRONG STRONG FRIENDS, I HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A FANTASTIC WEEK!

As promised, this week I’ll be talking upper body workouts. I work out 6 days a week currently, so I do 3 upper body days and 3 lower body ones. I enjoy training both upper and lower body and don’t really have a preference. As well as this I do cardio in the form of either uphill walking(steady state) or sprints(hiit) or even both, depending on how I’m feeling. So an upper body day looks a bit like this… Again, the reps and weight you do is up to your strength and preferences. Alternating Bicep Curls - 10 reps -

CURRENT GYM PLAYLIST

I simply cannot exercise without music, especially cardio. The right music at the gym is SO important for me, so I have put together my current top 10 songs I listen to at the gym, I will be doing a different playlist every week from now on so keep a look out. This week’s theme is Rap & Hip-hop, cause it’s my fave.

TORQUING CARS! REVISED FORD KUGA ANNOUNCED

Ford has announced details about the facelifted Kuga midsized SUV, which will be mildly restyled, fitted with new engine options and include the latest in-car technology. Taking design elements from the EcoSport compact SUV and new Edge model, the Kuga’s exterior’s look is updated with a large upper trapezoidal grille, a smaller lower grille, new headlamps incorporating LED daytime running lights and new fog lamps. The rear of the car gets similar treatment, with restyled tail lights, while there are also new alloy wheel designs and two new colours (Guard Grey and Copper Pulse). A power-operated retractable tow bar will automatically store itself out of sight below the rear bumper when not in use. Inside the Kuga, the steering wheel and air con buttons have been made more intuitive to use, while there are fewer and more easily distinguishable buttons and switches, aimed at making the controls easier to recognise and navigate. An electronic handbrake is also new, freeing up more space in the centre console, while there’s also a new USB connection. Also new is a handsfree tailgate, which can be opened or closed via a kicking motion under the rear bumper – a response to a third of Kuga customers requesting the technology, which is already available on cars from a number of other brands. The revised Kuga also has a number of other technology updates, including the inclusion of Ford’s Sync 3 connectivity system, which comes with a voice control system that can understand simple, more conversational instructions (such as “I need petrol” or “I need a coffee”) and a new 8-inch touchscreen that can be controlled by the same gestures used on smartphones and tablets. Engine-wise, there are a few tweaks to the existing line-up, with the introduction of a more efficient 118bhp 1.5-litre diesel the major news, for which Ford claims a 64.2mpg official fuel consumption figure and CO2 emissions of 115g/km. The revised Kuga also adds two new trim lines, the sporty ST-Line and the luxury-inspired Vignale, which, in addition to higher-quality materials in the cabin and additional equipment, offers customers concierge-like personal service from dealerships. The new Kuga is available to order now, First deliveries begin by the end of the year.

NEW CAR SALES SOAR ACROSS EUROPE, BUT NOT IN IRELAND OR UK!

Nearly 1.5m brand new cars were registered across Europe last month, representing a 7.1% increase on 2015 and the strongest September for a decade. All but three European markets reported an increase in new car sales. Romania, Hungary and Latvia saw the biggest leaps of 62.7%, 31.1% and 29.2% respectively. Ireland, the Netherlands and Greece each saw new registrations fall by between 1% and 10%. The UK saw a modest 1.6% increase, the fourth weakest in Europe. SUV sales hit 400,000 across the continent, a historic first for this market sector. However, hatchbacks still dominate the charts, with theVolkswagen Golf, Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo, Vauxhall/Opel Corsaand Renault Clio all beating the bestselling Nissan Qashqai SUV. More than half of the top 20 new cars are hatchbacks, while just three of those list are SUVs. Volkswagen might see these latest figures as encouraging. Porsche and Skoda are big winners in the VW Group stable, with SUV sales promising to deliver another lift to the beleaguered manufacturer. The new Volkswagen Tiguan and Seat Ateca, as well as the upcoming Skoda Kodiaq, should capitalise on growing SUV demand. The Golf, meanwhile - the bestselling car in Europe and Volkswagen’s most recognisable model - has slipped somewhat. It’s still 21,000 units ahead of its nearest rival, the Astra, but sales have slowed in the UK, France and Germany. This year’s Renault Megane and the brand new Fiat Tipo are new challengers to the Golf’s throne. Romania’s 62.7% increase in car sales is likely to consist mainly of corporate purchases, although increased public-sector wages will have nudged private consumers into showrooms. Home brand Dacia is historically a market leader in this growing economy.

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR STAR’S AN OPEN BOOK: It was a busy weekend for Kieran Donaghy with an appearance on the Late Late Show, including shooting a few hoops with Ryan Tubridy and Nathan Carter, book signings and of course the little matter of a SuperLeague Cup game. His book ‘What do You think of That’, cowritten by Kieran Shanahan will certainly be one of the best-selling sports books as we head into the Christmas period. Credit must go to the Star as he has opened up about his dyslexia, his relationship with his troubled father and the effect of false rumours on his family. He has been on a number of media outlets this week talking about the book and how he works with the publishers to ensure there were things at the start of each chapter that will act as hooks for those with dyslexia. The good news from a Kerry point of view is that he has not ruled out donning the Green and Gold again. Many thought that after the defeat by Dublin this year and his remaining on the pitch at Croke Park with his daughter long after the game was over was his way of saying goodbye. He has said that if he feels his body is right and that he can have the appetite for the early mornings in the gym and the hard work he will make himself available for selection. Before that he will hoping to win another title as the book is short listed for the eir Sports Book of the Year. There are 20 books on the list with the shortlist due to be announced on November 28th and the awards ceremony in Dublin in December. Kerry are doubly represented on the long list with Weeshie Fogarty’s The Heart and Soul of Kerry Football also nominated. This will be a good boost for Weeshie who is on the mend from recent illness and will hopefully be back on the radio soon. (Tim Moynihan must be given a mention here for his presenting of Terrace Talk for the last few months). Hopefully both books can make it onto the short-list and even go all the way to bringing another title to the Kingdom. WARRIORS WIN 1ST LEG – BUT 2ND IS THE ONE THAT COUNTS: Irish TV Warriors win in their first leg of the Men’s Superleague Pat Duffy Cup might be a narrow one but that 6 points (Warriors 61-55 Swords Thunder, Dublin) could be vital by the end of Saturday night’s second leg in Dublin.

The game in Tralee was played in front of another sell-out crowd with the Complex full 40 minutes before tip-off. The game was a real Cup tie with both defences playing particularly well meaning that it was always going to be a relatively low scoring game. The opening quarter was very evenly matched and ended with the visitors ahead 18-17 with Isaac Westbrooks hitting 2 big three pointers for Swords. Many of the older basketball fans remember Jerome as one of the top players the game has seen and Isaac is certainly following in his footsteps. Trae Pemberton and Kieran Donaghy hit two big three pointers in the opening minutes of the second quarter. While Narbon and Goldsborough were sitting out this period Warriors pushed ahead and another three from Fergal O’Sullivan saw the home side end the half with a big lead 41-21. The Warriors had seven different scorers with Dusan Bogdanovic on 11 points at this stage. If anyone felt that it was game over Swords Thunder had different ideas and they started the comeback with baskets from Coombes, Westbrooks and Lacey they closed to within 5 points going into the final quarter. Leonard and Pemberton kept the Warriors scoreboard ticking over but Swords Thunder were always able to respond and coming into the final stages there was only 4 between the sides. On his debut Goran Pantovic endeared himself to the home crowd scoring the last basket and then making a vital block at the other end to send Warriors on the road to Dublin with a lead of 6 points. Irish TV Warriors coach Mark Bernsen was disappointed with the way his side played in the second period. “We all did a poor job including myself. I didn’t get the rotation of players right but credit to the guys they found the way to win. We are doing well at grinding out wins and that’s an important aspect of the game for a squad to have. We know it’s really only half time but we lead by 6 and its up to us to complete the job now, but it will not be easy”. Ryan Leonard top scored on 14 followed by D Bogdanovic on 13 as was Trae Pemberton while Darren O’Sullivan hit 7. ST BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL CLUB: In the Ladies Division 2 St Brendan’s defeated Lixnaw 53-25. The Tralee side got off to the better start and led 10-0 at the end of the first quarter. They had extended their advantage 26-7 by the half. Lixnaw fought back in their third quarter but St Brendan’s were able to stay ahead and their defence held firm in the final quarter to hold out for a good win. In the u14 Division 2 the St Brendan’s boys made the long trip to Colaiste na Sceilige but went down by 3 points to Caherciveen 2825. There was nothing between the sides all through the game with the lead changing hands on a number of occasions. St Brendan’s were ahead going into the last two minutes but the home side pulled it out of the fire in the last minute. Other Results: In the Boys u14 Division 1 it finished St Brendan’s 32 – St Bridget’s 33

Friday 28th October 2016

THE BRIGHT SIDE: Irish sport and rugby in general earned the admiration of the wider community with the way the sudden and tragic death of Anthony Foley was dealt with. The scene’s at the end of the game in Thomond Park when Anthony’s boys joined the full Munster squad and staff in the centre circle and the way the crowd responded will live long in the memory. Sport has to move on and it’s great to be writing about the happy side of rugby after the last few weeks. And it certainly was a happy time for Tralee native Ultan Dillane as he signed a new two-year contract with Connacht. This does of course mean that the speculation that he might be coming to Munster proved to be unfounded. Dillane’s new deal will see him stay in the West until the end of 2019 at least during which time he will no doubt add many international caps to the four he presently has. Ultan was obviously delighted with the deal saying, “Connacht Rugby has given me so many opportunities since I started in the Academy. I am delighted to have signed on again as I am really enjoying my rugby. These are exciting times for the province and I look forward to many good days in green”. Ultan is part of the 34 man Irish squad that have been called in to prepare for the fixture against the mighty New Zealand in Chicago on November 5th. ANOTHER OVAL BALL DEFEAT FOR TRALEE: Staying with the oval ball and it was another disappointing day for Tralee as they lost again. This time they went down to Kinsale 21-10 in J2. Tralee will be hoping to pick up a win quickly or they will quickly be engaged in a relegation battle, not a place any side wants to be. Better news for u18’s and Women’s teams: While the men’s team are struggling the Women are having no such problems. They won again over the weekend. The u18’s had a big 36-0 win over Mallow. ST BRENDAN’S OAKPARK COMMUNITY GAMES: The AGM took place this week in Na Gaeil with the year’s achievements at both local and national levels outlined. Outgoing chairperson John Murray and treasurer Jim O’Connor were thanked for all their hard work and dedication over a number of years. The Committee elected are: President Christy Murray, Chairperson Eoin Stack, Secretary Fiona Morris, Asst Secretary Tina Stack, Treasurer Melissa Costello, PRO Carmel Kelly. Children’s Officer Grainne Hayes with the Committee Members being Damien Ginty, Loretto O’Sullivan and Dan Ahern. Next year is the 50th anniversary of the Community Games and big celebrations are being planned at all levels of the organisation. Fundraiser: Volunteers will be on the streets this Friday for the flag -day. It is a really important fundraiser for the club and all support will be greatly appreciated. SEAN’S WELL DESERVED COMMUNITY GAME AWARD: The curtain came down on the Community Games season with the Awards Night where Sean Daly, from Kenmare, was presented with the Paud O’Leary Memorial Trophy (2016 Volunteer of the Year) Trophy. Sean was accompanied on the night by his son Senator Mark Daly who told the crowd of his father’s long involvement in athletics including training teams and competing for St John‘s Athletic Club in Tralee. Tralee’s Community Games efforts were well rewarded on the night with Blennerville / Ballyard winning the Cultural Events award, St Brendan’s /Oakpark taking the Swimming honours and Boherbee/Cloghers/Manor taking the Merit award for Athletics.

Show Racism the Red Card: This Saturday St Brendan’s Park will hold its annual Academy Blitz from 10am until 11.30am at Christy Leahy Park. During the Blitz The Park will mark the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) initiative.

RUNNING DATES: This weekend in Athletics the action in the County Senior/Junior Cross Country and Juvenile Relays (u10, u12, u14 and u16’s) take place in Caherciveen At 11am. The next Munster event is the Juvenile Uneven Age, Junior and Senior Cross-country Championships. These are on November 13th at the Limerick Racecourse from 11.30am. SWIMMING FOR TURKEY’S: The Tralee Bay Swimming Club has begun its Turkey Series with a record breaking 42 taking to the water and not a wet-suit in sight. The swims take place on Sunday mornings and for the first one the weather certainly helped even if there was a swell and a bitterly cold east wind. As the swimmers prepared to enter the water, they gathered for a photo and then a moments silence was observed for the late Anthony Foley. Anthony’s sister, Rosie is an active member of Tralee Bay Swimming Club and is a regular winter swimmer. Everyone is welcome to join in and all swimmers get a ticket for the big turkey draws – which also means Santa’s visit to Fenit is only a few weeks away. Sorry to all those who are about to throw this into the bin now that I have mentioned the ‘C’ word!! IN THE SQUARE: CAMOGIE NEWS: In the Limerick U13 Championship Causeway and Na Piarsaigh could not be separated even after extra time and the two sides will have to meet again. Cillard were beaten by Ballybrown in the u13 final on a 2-09 to 3-03 score-line. Causeway are into the Limerick Minor Championship after they beat Cappamore in a high scoring thriller 8-11 to 7-07. That semifinal is on November 20th with the opposition as yet unknown. This weekend Cillard play Ballygran/Newtownsshandrum in the Cup semifinal. The Camogie Association want to thank everyone who supported their recent Church Gate collection. PARNELL’S NEWS: AGM: The Parnell’s AGM takes place at 9pm in Kerins O’Rahillys clubhouse on Friday November 18th. The club wishes Robin Porter all the best on his recovery from injury. Tralee Park Run: The club is involved in the weekly Park Run and full details are on the clubs Facebook page. Congratulations to the all the Kerry u15 hurlers, including the two Parnells members who were presented with their Munster Shield medals in the Meadowlands this week. ST PATS NOTES: There was no winner of the Lotto from the numbers drawn 11,16,19 and 21 and the next draw will be in Skelper’s Quane’s with a jackpot of e2,200. Academy: Last Sunday was the final day of the Academy and the young players were delighted that St Pat’s senior team player and All Ireland minor medal winner Kieran Dwyer was on hand to present them with their medals. The club hopes all the young players enjoyed the Academy during the season. The club also thanks all the coaches who worked with the kids this year. Some of the u10’s will now be moving onto u12’s next season and everyone is delighted to be witnessing their improvement. Ladies Team: St Pats are delighted to have their Ladies team back in training. They train every Friday evening at 7.15pm and new players are

always welcome. Details are available from Helen on 087 7631977. KERINS O’RAHILLY’S NOTES: Senior: The Senior Town Championship final was called off due to Ballymac not being able to field a team. Cahill Cup: In the Cahill Cup Charlie Kerins will play Skellig Rangers in the final this Saturday at 1pm in Cromane. All support will be appreciated by the players and management who we wish the best of luck. Juvenile: The U6/U8/U10’s Academy has finished after its season. The u8’s and u10’s ended with games against An Gealtacht and the club will pay at the West Kerry club in the New Year. The club want to pay tribute to the coaches and referees during the year and of course to the parents. Well done to all the players who have shown great dedication all year. Details of the Juvenile AGM will be announced. The Girls u12’s have also finished for their season and enjoyed some treats as a reward for all their hard work. The u14 girls are celebrating their North Kerry win where they defeated Dingle following a very impressive performance. The u15’s boys played Austin Stacks in the County Board mini-blitz and went down by 3 points. Lotto: There was no winner from the numbers drawn 2,21,22 and 25 with the next jackpot being e4,600. BEST OF LUCK TO NA GAEIL: All in Tralee are wishing Na Gaeil all the best in their replay of the County Premier Junior Football Championship. The game takes place in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday with a 2.30pm throw in. Both sides are delighted to get another crack at the title following an exciting first game where Glenbeigh / Glencar played the closing stages with 13 players. ON THE GREEN: With the weather turning to winter golfers will have more time on their hands and one way they can use it is by completing the GUI survey. The Golfing Union of Ireland is hosting an on-line survey on how Inter-Club Cups and Shields can be improved. The survey is part of the GUI’s new ‘strategic theme’ and seeks responses from those who currently participate in these events as well as those who don’t. Those who take the survey on www.golfnet.ie will be entered into a draw for a number of fabulous prizes as well as helping the GUI to create a better experience for all those involved. On the Course: In the 9 hole Der O’Sullivan Hamper the winner was Niall Lucey with 37 points. Second was Denis Murphy with Bernard Costello third. Donal Lucey took the +18 handicap prize. In the 18 hole competition John O’Connell was the winner. The Captain’s Dinner is on in Ballyroe Heights Hotel this Saturday night and it promises to be a great night. Conor Stack was the winner of the Senior Men’s Competition followed by Paudie Casey with Des O’Halloran in third and Sean O’Connor in fourth. The +24 prize went to Padraig Corcoran. The Ladies Competition, sponsored by Ross Jewellers was won by Liz Grey with Maureen Tiplady in second. Der O’Sullivan sponsored the first Christmas Hamper and Mary Murphy has her cupboards full for the festive seasons! Mary Savage was second and Gorretti O’Connor was 3rd.
